SALT CITY BLUES, WINTER EDITION

T

his week’s humor column is about aging and mortality and the horrible suffering that accompanies the process. Hey, it’s winter in Syracuse. What do you want from me? Showgirls popping out of a cake?

Here’s the breakdown: My back hurts. My shoulder hurts. I have tennis elbow, and I don’t even play tennis. My head contains a bottomless pool of guck that drips into my lungs, making the simple act of watching my wife shovel snow exhausting. And those are just the infirmities I can rely on. Throw in a neck twinge here, a spike of heartburn there, a fleeting-but-unnerving swelling of the foot or ankle, and there you have it: the beginning of the end, the inexorable slide into the eternal abyss. At this rate I’ll be gone by Valentine’s Day, the one plus being . . . I’ll be gone by Valentine’s Day. Well, maybe not so fast. I am curious to see what new taxpayer-financed fandangle Gov. Andrew Cuomo will give our county executive, Joanie Mahoney, this year as a monument to their ardor. An Empire State Building in Elbridge. Gondolas in Geddes? A sun temple in Solvay? As long as it’s built outside the Syracuse line and we don’t need it, it’s sure to win Joanie’s heart, all six chambers. Obviously, some of my malaise is my fault. I’m not by nature a “positive person” and this time of year brings out my darkest aspects. No doubt it would

help my mood if I stopped locking myself in the bathroom with a bottle of maple rye and watching David Bowie’s “Lazarus” video until I fall asleep on a wet bath towel. Now there was a man with a plan. Bowie showed remarkable courage and creativity in his final days. Who has the energy to kick it like that? Here I am, sucking down coffee and Red Bull like there’s no tomorrow, and I can’t even stay awake for two segments of Time Warner Cable’s Capital Tonight. OK, maybe I should cut myself a break there, but the point still holds. Actually, I like Capital Tonight, especially when Joanie and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner appear together. It’s like our very own Tribal Council of Survivor. One of these nights, I imagine that host Liz Benjamin will turn to our county executress and say: “Joanie, would you ever give the immunity idol to Andrew if it turned out that Andrew was still being investigated by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara?” Speaking of Time Warner, the cable giant isn’t exactly chasing my winter blues away. One morning last week we lost cable and internet service at the

house. A helpful Time Warner phone person attempted to remotely reset our cable box. When that failed, I was told to try a manual reset. So there I was at 5:20 a.m., hunched over the box in the ergonomically correct “Quasimodo” position” when my lower spine did the equivalent of an unscheduled switch to Direct TV. “Gosh!” I exclaimed to the helpful Time Warner phone person. The manual reset didn’t work either. Later that day, a Time Warner home visit person informed my wife (I was in the bathroom watching the “Lazarus” video) that the guy who plows our driveway had plowed over the cable, severing it. The subtle implication was that this was somehow our fault — as if we’re the ones who strung a cable a few feet from a driveway that gets plowed every winter. Karma awaits these people. Thanks to free Internet streaming, cable and satellite TV will soon be as dead as I will be. Until then, I’ll continue to enjoy the one part of my body that still feels great, and no, it’s not what you’re thinking. It’s my artificial knee implant. Glenn Frey of The Eagles could write a song about the depths I’ve reached, but now he’s gone, too. At least his songs will live on in car ads and cheap parodies like this one: Welcome to the Upstate Bone and Joint Center Such a lovely brace (Such a lovely brace) Such a lovely brace They got my X-rays on file at the Upstate Bone and Joint Center Hope the nurses here (Hope the nurses here) Didn’t photograph my gear You know what they say about the Hotel California and Syracuse in winter: You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave. Zeus McClurkin got his nickname for his high-flying ability and boisterous dunks on the court. “They say every time I dunk the TAKE ball, it sounds like thunder, so they naturally gave me that name,” he said.

GLOBETROTTER ZEUS ON SMILE CRUSADE

The Harlem Globetrotters return to the Carrier Dome on Friday, Jan. 29, as a part of the basketball team’s 2016 world tour. Known for its dazzling and showstopping moves on the court, the hoops group is also recognized for its charitable efforts off the hardwood. Nicknamed “The Ambassadors of Goodwill,” the Globetrotters are currently celebrating their 90th anniversary. As a part of this observance, the organization has started “The Great Assist” initiative. The ultimate goal is to extend 100 million smiles worldwide over the next 10 years in time for the team’s centennial anniversary. The ambitious plan is more than achievable, with players such as Julian “Zeus” McClurkin, 29, helping to lead the cause. “I don’t know how we’re going to quantify that, but we’re going to try,” he said. “We’re known as the Ambassadors of Goodwill for a good reason. We’ve been to 122 countries and provinces around the world, basically spreading smiles and joy everywhere we go.” When he’s off the court and catching up at home, McClurkin is a practicing minister for the Pool of Bethesda Church of the Living God, on the east side of Columbus, Ohio. So McClurkin is no stranger to giving back to his community. “It represents who I am already, not just as a basketball player, but as a man,” he said. “Being a Globetrotter and being a part of the Great Assist is an extension of myself.” While in town Jan. 20 to promote the Dome game, McClurkin also made an appearance at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. “We have this program called Smile Patrol,” McClurkin said. “That’s where I go into each of the (hospital) rooms and I just try to put a smile on those kids’ faces who maybe haven’t had the best of news in their recent history.” The Great Assist initiative has many other programs involved in accomplishing the team’s goal. This includes building character, aiding in physical fitness, lending a hand after natural disasters, helping build homes for the needy and volun-

teering at soup kitchens, according to the Globetrotters’ official website. “An example of community outreach that we do is when we go to schools,” McClurkin said. “We have an ABCs of Bullying Prevention program that we have been doing for the past few years. It’s through a partnership with the National Campaign to Stop Violence.” McClurkin is a prime example of never giving up on one’s dreams, making him an excellent role model for children

worldwide. After being cut from numerous basketball teams during his early high school years, he stayed diligent and made it as a junior and senior. After high school McClurkin played several years at the Division II level in college before landing a spot on the Washington Generals. The Generals were the “arch-rivals” of the Globetrotters at the time, though Washington has only won a single game against Harlem in more than 60 years.

“That was when I noticed who the Globetrotters were and what they represented as a whole,” McClurkin said. “That year (that I was with the Generals), I did everything I could to be recognized by the Globetrotters. Eventually they got tired of me dunking on them, so they signed me over.” McClurkin has spent the past two seasons with the Globetrotters, and recently paved his way into the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most slam dunks in a one-minute span. This required him to not simply dunk the ball while standing and jumping vertically, but to run to the free throw line and back on each attempt. McClurkin said that the Globetrotters join forces with the Guinness personnel each year to attempt to break records involving basketball. When asked if there was anything he would like to try, he said, “Hey, I dunk a lot, let’s do something with dunks.” There was no record set prior to McClurkin’s effort, so a base goal was set at 15 dunks. Despite struggling with exercise-induced asthma, McClurkin was able to prevail and just narrowly pass the barrier of 15 dunks with seconds to spare. The result further proved his drive to succeed, even when the odds were against him. “I was able to do it, I was able to push through,” he said. “It’s kind of a testimony to asthmatics everywhere that you don’t have to let your asthma be a hindrance to you.” The Harlem Globetrotters return to the Carrier Dome on Friday, Jan. 29, 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and $33, with VIP tickets at $55 and $75 and courtside seats at $108. JIM SHERPA: ALL WASHED UP

A single string drives Djug Django. Ithaca’s Gypsy swing band features the washtub bass playing of Syracuse native Jim Sherpa, who began thumping the gutbucket in the mid-1970s for the Water Street Boys jug band in Oswego, where he studied theater in college. After spending several years playing on the streets of New Orleans, Sherpa now holds down the bottom for Djug Django, a snappy octet also featuring fiddler Eric Aceto, clarinetist Brian Earle, drummer Al Hartland, pianist Chad Lieberman and guitarists Harry Aceto, Doug Robinson and Dave Davies, who doubles on trombone. Every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m., this eclectic aggregation draws an enthusiastic crowd of jitterbuggers to downtown Ithaca’s Lot 10, a second-floor bistro at 106 S. Cayuga St., just off the State Street Commons. For the past five years, the band has made annual Salt City appearances as guests of the Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse (JASS), and it will do so again on Sunday, Jan. 31, 4 to 7 p.m., at Pensabene’s Casa Grande, 135 State Fair Blvd. Tickets are $15; call 471-1289 for details. Djug Django specializes in the music of Roma guitarist Jean Baptiste “Django” Reinhardt (1910-1953), who founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France along with fiddler Stephane Grappelli. Hot Club specialties revived by Djug Django included “Nuages,” “Honeysuckle Rose” and “Exactly Like You.” The combo also plays Dixieland standards such as “Bourbon Street Parade” and “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue,” often showcasing guest trumpeter Frank Campos, who teaches at Ithaca College’s Whalen Center for Music. “This is one of the hottest little bands I have ever heard,” Campos says. “Every individual in this group is a brilliant and distinguished performer on his own, but when you put them together the band becomes even greater than its parts. I play all kinds of music from classical to jazz, but playing with Djug Django is a

special joy because everybody swings so hard. When we come together, something amazing happens.” Djug Django’s repertoire ranges from standards such as “Creole Love Call” and “Undecided” to original tunes by Dave Davies such as “Mudbone,” a paean to a pain-in-the-butt New Orleans busker. Davies shares lead vocal duties with Robinson, who sings rarely heard tunes Djug Django. such as “Frim-Fram Sauce” and “C’est Magnifique.” They play the standards “You’re the Cream in My Coffee” and “Besame Mucho,” the traditional “La Villa Rosa,” and Django Reinhardt tunes such as “Minor Swing” and “Daphne.” Djug Django is a cooperative band in which all members contribute ideas. Each musician understands his goal and collectively they have a knack for selecting material that perfectly complements the Django Reinhardt pattern. “The end result has a delicacy and refinement we rarely witness in jazz,” said the late JASS board member Pat Carroll, a veteran cornetist who led the Irish Channel Jazz Band here. “The group’s overall musicality is on a very high level indeed: sophisticated and dead-on. In fact, there’s a visible relaxation. These guys really enjoy playing together, and that spirit comes across clear as crystal.” While the Quintette du Hot Club de France had Louis Vola playing double bass, Djug Django is driven by the spirited Jim Sherpa. He’s showcased on “Hit That Jive, Jack,” “Old Folks at Home” and, aptly, “Mr. Rhythm Man.” The washtub’s single string may seem limited, but Sherpa makes the most of it. Carroll, an astute observer of the jazz scene for more than six decades, was duly impressed: “This is a rhythm instrument, and Jim has a natural sense of rhythm plus the skill to obtain a full range of sound out of a single string. Simply amazing.” Rhythm runs in Sherpa’s veins. He’s the son of octogenarian Joe Sherpa, who has retired as doorman at Hotel Syracuse and in earlier years played drums for the Mario DeSantis Orchestra. Bill DeLapp this week became the Syracuse New Times’ most overqualified editor-in-chief in the paper’s 47-year history. DeLapp was most recently the newspaper’s managing editor, entertainment analyst and reviewer of film, stage, books and concerts. Last spring he was appointed acting editor-in-chief after editor-in-chief Larry Dietrich was hospitalized with a serious illness. (Dietrich has since returned home to complete his recuperation.) Regarding his transition from “acting” editor-in-chief to editor-in-chief, DeLapp deadpanned, “I guess I passed the audition.” DeLapp first joined the Syracuse New Times as a freelancer in August 1980, penning a review for the Christine Lightcap production of Grease. “I was paid 15 bucks,” he recalled, “but the dollar

stretched further during the Jimmy Carter administration.” He has worked alongside several publishers (Peter Orville, Art Zimmer and Bill Brod), various editors (John Powers, Dave Berman, Walt Shepperd, Karen Tackett and Barbara Goss) and editors-in-chief (Mike Greenstein, Roland Sweet, Tina Schwab and Molly English Bowers) over the decades. Along the way DeLapp has snared several accolades from the Syracuse Press Club, including honors for headline writing. “I have two headline models that I will probably never top: ‘Sticks Nix Hick Pix,’ from a 1935 issue of Variety, and ‘Headless Body In Topless Bar,’ from the New York Post in 1983.” As editor-in-chief, DeLapp will continue to guide the newspaper and website’s staff and stable of freelancer writers and bloggers. “We’ve got the best damn writers and designers in town,” DeLapp crowed. “Syracuse Media Group had better look out: We’re coming after what’s left of their dwindling readership.” SNT

HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU

A

new year means a new roster of events on the three main Finger Lakes wine trails — and, in some cases, some brand new events.

The Seneca Lake Wine Trail offers nine events this year. Two are newbies. Red Red Wine: There’s more to life than Riesling. This one-day event, scheduled for March 5, celebrates the region’s red wines, like Cabernet Franc, Meritage, Merlot, Lemberger and Pinot Noir. Check in at your designated starting winery and enjoy a self-guided tour of the wineries of Seneca Lake, with wine and food pairings at each stop. Tickets purchased in advance are $25; designated driver ducats are $20. Veggies and Varietals: For this May 7 event, member wineries will prepare and serve a wide range of vegetarian dishes, paired with a variety of wines. Kyle Anne Pallischeck, marketing communications manager for the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, says this new event is being introduced in response to the growing interest in vegetarian lifestyle and food choices. “The trail is consistently looking for new event ideas, and recognizing the versatility of pairing our cool-climate wines with vegetarian dishes we feel has broad appeal,’’ she says. “We anticipate that even our omnivorous guests will still enjoy the event.’’ Even though the event is three months away, the wine trail has received enthusiastic feedback about it

on social media. A recent post on the trail’s Facebook page, which sought input on what type of vegetarian dishes visitors would look forward to sampling, received more than 200 comments and more than 140 “shares.’’ Suggestions included ratatouille, organic vegetable stir-fry, vegetarian-vegan lasagna and cauliflower pizza, among others. Check in at your designated starting winery, pick up your tickets and begin a self-guided tour of Seneca Lake, stopping at the wineries of your choosing. Advance tickets are $25 per person, $20 for designated drivers. The Seneca Lake Wine Trail is also offering a $5 discount on all ticket purchases in 2016. Visit senecalakewine.com and at the checkout, enter the discount code lakes. On the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, meat — specifically bacon — plays a starring role in an event that debuted last year and is making a comeback this year. “Bakein on the Lakein” takes place March 19 and 20 at the trail’s 16 member wineries. Visitors will enjoy bacon-infused dishes, wines that complement them and additional wine samples. Tickets are good for the full weekend and include a souvenir wine glass, food and wine tastings at each stop and a chance to win a barbecue-themed gift basket.

An organization that promotes artisan cheeses produced in the Finger Lakes region has changed its name. The Finger Lakes Cheese Trail is now the Finger Lakes Cheese Alliance. “The word ‘trail’ gave the impression to the consumer that we were like the wine/ beer trails, where we were all open every day and ‘wanted’ visitors on our farms,” stated Carmella Hoffman, of Sunset View Creamery in Odessa, in a news release. “Which is not always the case, especially with some of our smaller producers.” According to the website, “We are just broadening our focus to the cheeses and the many great places and events you can get them — from our farms to farm markets, wineries to local stores, restaurants to events.’’ The alliance sponsors events such as the fifth annual Finger Lakes Cheese Festival, to be held July 23 at Sunset View Creamery. For more information on the cheese alliance, its members and events, visit flcheesetrail.com/cheese-festival. SNT Margaret McCormick is a freelance writer and editor in Syracuse. SYRACUSE STAGE FLIPS THE BIRD

Knowing a good thing when they see it, Syracuse Stage has brought in the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s production of Stupid F***ing Bird, playwright Aaron Posner’s 2013 modern-day comedic adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull. Bird was the word at Woolly Mammoth’s Beltway stomping grounds, when the 2013 debut proved so successful that it was quickly reprised in 2014. In deference to sensitive readers, however, as well as adhering to Syracuse Stage’s own advertising campaign, we’ll refrain from utilizing the title’s key Anglo-Saxonism, which is employed almost as often as in a Tarantino movie. Strangely, however, some ladies were giddily hurling f-bombs to each other during a recent intermission, apparently feeling liberated by the show’s title. Perhaps sensing that the phrase “Russian theater” would be a cue for Syracuse Stage subscribers to head for the hills (Woody Allen kidded that school of existential ennui in his 1975 movie Love and Death), Posner’s Chekhovian remix opts for a hip irreverence that nevertheless manages to delve into some dark places. Wouldbe theater artist Conrad (Ian Holcomb) returns home to showcase a performance piece titled Here We Are, as performed by his girlfriend, acting ingenue Nina (Katie deBuys), at the estate of Conrad’s mother, well-known actress Emma Arkadina (Kate Eastwood Norris). Also in the intimate audience is Emma’s current boy toy, celebrated author Doyle Trigorin (Cody Nickell); Emma’s older brother Eugene (Rick Foucheux),

a physician; Conrad’s paunchy best pal Dev (Darius Pierce); and Emma’s morose housekeeper Mash (Kimberly Gilbert). When Emma interrupts the performance to mock Conrad’s work as pretentious, the critique sends him down a rabbit hole of despair. It doesn’t help, for that matter, when Nina is intrigued with Doyle’s celebrityhood. Meanwhile, the lovelorn Dev (who dismisses himself in the opening scene as being a chubby, balding, flatfooted orphan) has an unrequited yearning for Mash, who is still crushing for handsome Conrad. And Doctor Eugene would like nothing better than to relive his late 20s, because this time he would do it smarter. Even with Chekhov as the show’s guiding force, you never quite know where Posner and director Howard Shalwitz are heading. It starts when cast members

break through the fourth wall from the get-go to chat with the audience. At one point all seven performers engage in a Russian chair dance, then line up on stage like members of a therapy session. Some players even burst into song, including Mash strumming a ukelele to warble the dirge, “Life Is Disappointing.” Meanwhile, multicolored portrait images of Chekhov hang on the back wall of scenic designer Misha Kathman’s spartan set, looming over the characters during the beginning and closing acts. Yet a typical kitchen set is utilized during the crucial second act when several pivotal moments take place, offering a more intimate take on these relationships. Syracuse Stage had good box-office fortune with Christopher Durang’s consistently amusing Chekhov spoof, Vanya and

Vanya was more accessible, however, while Bird features occasional bursts of drama and tragedy (especially in a narrative postscript involving all seven roles), which may explain why the company placed it in the January “risk slot.” Yet Woolly Mammoth has transported a polished, invigorating theatrical work to the Salt City, a show that hums on all cylinders with stellar performances from its cast. Kate Eastwood Norris does wonders with Emma, a flamboyant middle-aged actress who was never ready for motherhood at a youthful age (as Conrad regretfully learned), instead surrendering her life to a series of wrongheaded artistic impulses and romantic liaisons. As her lover Doyle, Cody Nickell brings sly nuance to his caddish celebrity, while bringing down the house with his character’s closing line. Katie deBuys negotiates Nina’s daunting character arc, from novice actress to spurned lover, without missing a beat, while one can empathize with the tortured artist effect of Ian Holcomb’s Conrad. Rick Foucheux avoids the wizened clichés of his aging doctor. And there’s some charming interplay between Darius Pierce’s Dev and Kimberly Gilbert’s Mash when they duet on a musical number about life going on and on and on. Breaking that fourth wall can sometimes be an audience trap, however. When a beer-swigging Conrad asked one audience about how he could win back Nina’s affections, one wag instead advised, “Switch to Corona.” SNT

music-hall veteran Tod Slaughter and the notorious 1970 drive-in opus I Drink Your Blood. Since Sondheim went legit with the source material, however, Sweeney Todd offers a yummy course in Grand Guignol excess, with tongue-in-cheek lyrics (such as the Lovett-Todd duet “A Little Priest”) that are deliciously witty. As Todd, Benjamin J. Sills expertly plumbs the depths of psychotic madness, yet he also manages some audience sympathy for his devil. Sills’ facial reactions when Todd nibbles one of Lovett’s indigestible pies is worthy of a silent movie comedian. Cathleen O’Brien Brown likewise does bravura work as Mrs. Lovett, managing to be adorably wacko in her misguided efforts to win Todd’s heart. As the central lovebirds, Ceara Windhausen’s Johanna and Colin Keating’s Anthony provide an oasis of tender sanity amid the show’s increasing sense of spiraling doom. Robert G. Searle hits the right notes of coruscating evil as Turpin, while Liam Fitzpatrick clearly relishes the nastier moments of his judge’s sidekick. As a rival barber named Pirelli, Dan Williams brings the type of broad accent you’d hear at a Festa Italiana bocce ball tournament. And Erin Williamson darts in and out of the show as a beggar woman with a big secret (uh-oh.) Searor’s able musical direction does justice to Sondheim’s complex score. And while director Taylor soft-pedals some of the expected graphic bloodletting, the horror remains in this spirited production. Lots of local theater veterans also turn up in the ensemble, such as Michaela Oney, Jennifer Pearson and Kathy Burke Egloff sporting creepshow makeup that would be found in a George Romero zombie movie. Baldwinsville Theatre Guild’s penchant for mounting splashy, demanding musicals continues with its current production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, running through Feb. 6. Within the snug confines of the Presbyterian Education Center’s auditorium, director Korrie Taylor has to corral a cast of 23 performers, while music director Abel Searor wields his baton over a nine-member ensemble. Good luck making room for the proverbial kitchen sink. Sweeney Todd isn’t exactly a summer drive through wine country, either, with only sporadic local runs, such as a mid1980s Salt City Center production starring Bob Brown. Yet composer Stephen Sondheim’s dark-humored classic could be labeled as the stage’s only slasher opera. In 18th-century England, Sweeney Todd (Benjamin J. Sills) is back in town with murder on his mind. The Todd name is just an alias, however. He was once known as Benjamin Barker, an honest barber sent to Botany Bay 15 years earlier on a trumpedup charge by the villainous Judge Turpin (Robert G. Searle) in order to pursue Todd’s wife Lucy. Now a prison escapee, Todd vows vengeance on the hanging judge while also attempting to save his grown-up daughter Johanna (Ceara Windhausen) from Turpin’s clutches. Once the bodies start piling up at Todd’s reopened tonsorial parlor, however, that’s where lonely widower Mrs. Lovett (Cathleen O’Brien Brown) comes in, since Todd can supply her with the necessary baking ingredients for her “world-famous” meat pies. The penny dreadful legend of Todd was mostly relegated to exploitation, such as the 1936 British horror movie with

BLADE RUNNERS Three Syracuse Crunch players will skate for the AHL All-Star Classic

n the moments following the Frozen Dome Classic in November 2014, Syracuse Crunch owner Howard Dolgon mulled all of the work that went into playing a hockey game before an indoor record crowd of 30,715 at the Carrier Dome and swore he was never going to do something like that again.

1.27.16 - 2.2.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

He lied. On Sunday, Jan. 31, and Monday, Feb. 1, the Crunch is hosting the 2016 Toyota American Hockey League All-Star Classic and everything that goes along with it, including the All-Star Skills Competition and the All-Star Classic VIP party with the Grammy-nominated musical act Five for Fighting and nationally known comedians Rob Bartlett and Moody McCarthy. “I remember what I said to you (the media) after the Frozen Dome. But like (famous boxing promoter) Bob Arum once said, ‘Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth,’” Dolgon said, laughing. “We don’t do what people expect us to do,” Dolgon said. “Nobody ever thought we’d have a hockey game in the Carrier Dome. Nobody ever thought we’d have the first outside game in the AHL (the Outdoor Classic at the New York State Fairgrounds in 2010). We feel the community deserves events like these.” This is the AHL’s 80th year, and Dolgon said league president and CEO Dave Andrews asked the Crunch “in a very strong way” if it would host the All-Star Classic because of the Crunch’s track record with big events and Syracuse’s standing as an original AHL city in 1936 (Syracuse has had professional hockey off and on since then). Before saying yes, Dolgon said he surveyed Crunch chief operating officer Jim Sarosy and his staff, and they said they welcomed the challenge. He also solicited buy-in from civic leaders like Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney, county legislators and New York state Sen. John DeFrancisco. “I remember saying the same thing after the Dome game: ‘No big events for a little bit,’’’ said Sarosy, who’s in his 21st year with the Crunch and 14th overseeing the team’s day-to-day operations. “But as each day goes by, the further away you get from them, the more romantic they become. “I looked around at our staff here and, coming off the Dome game, felt they could handle it and deserved the opportunity to put the game on,” he added. “And I knew we as a community could handle this and it was too good of a chance to pass up to put the eyes of the hockey world on us for a weekend.” Indeed, the hockey spotlight will be directly on Syracuse Monday night as the National Hockey League is off after its All-Star Game Sunday, and the AHL All-Star Classic will reach more than 110 million households through Sportsnet in Canada and its TV partners in the United States. “That we were asked to do it speaks volumes for the community and the franchise, and how the sport of hockey has grown tremendously in this market,” Dolgon said. So as Syracuse prepares to host its first AHL All-Star Classic since 1998, here are five things you should know about the event before the puck drops Monday night:

C&S Companies VIP Party (Sunday, 4:30 p.m., Pirro Convention Center): Hosted by Moody McCarthy, a Syracuse native, the VIP Party features Five for Fighting and Rob Bartlett as the headliners. Five for Fighting is actually John Ondrasik, a huge hockey fan whose stage name comes from hockey’s most notorious penalty, a five-minute major for fighting. Among Five for Fighting’s best-known songs are “The Riddle,” “100 Years,” the Grammy-nominated hit “Superman (It’s Not Easy),” and “Chances” from the movie The Blind Side. Rob Bartlett is a successful stand-up comedian, impressionist, writer, and television and stage actor who is best known for his regular appearances on Imus in the Morning with Don Imus, as he voices and writes bits for popular characters like The Godfather, Fat Elvis and Dr. Phil. His television credits include a recurring role as attorney Milton Schoenfeld on Law & Order SVU and Rob Bartlett’s Not For Profit TV Special that earned Emmy Awards for Best Writing and Best Entertainment Program. Popular stand-up comedian Matthew “Moody” McCarthy was born and raised in Syracuse, graduated from Corcoran High School and started his comedy career while working for radio station WYYY-FM (Y94). He has made multiple TV appearances, from The Late Show with David Letterman to America’s Got Talent. “We as a community have a very unique opportunity to show off to the 29 other American Hockey League markets and 30 National Hockey League markets what a wonderful place this is, especially for hockey,” Sarosy said. “We want them leaving here on Tuesday saying Syracuse knows how to throw a party and they have their act together. “This is more than a hockey game,” Sarosy said, “this is about Syracuse and what we as a community can get done.” It costs $50 to attend the VIP Party, or less if you also purchase a ticket to the All-Star Classic. There are also free events for fans: The I LOVE NEW YORK Fan Fest on Sunday, noon to 8 p.m., and Monday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Pirro Convention Center, and the AHL Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony on Monday, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Mulroy Civic Center’s Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater, 411 Montgomery St. The All-Stars: The All-Star Classic will feature some of the best young players in hockey. Of the 679 players who have played in the event since it started in 1995, about 93 percent have spent time in the National Hockey League, including stars such as Patrice Bergeron, Ben Bishop, Troy Brouwer, Ryan Callahan, Zdeno Chara, Logan Couture, Jiri Hudler, Tyler Johnson, Chris Kunitz, Ryan Miller, Gustav Nyquist, Zach Parise, Tuukka Rask, Pekka Rinne, Bobby Ryan, Cory Schneider, Patrick Sharp, Jason Spezza, Eric Staal, P.K. Subban and Mats Zuccarello. “Every (2016) all-star has either played in the National Hockey League or will soon have long careers in the NHL,” Dolgon said. “In 1998 when we hosted the All-Star Game, our franchise was only 4 years old so I don’t know that our fan base was that knowledgeable. But now they know the level of the talent they’ll be seeing.” The Crunch will be represented by goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis, defenseman Matt Taormina and center Mike Angelidis, who have all already played

in the NHL. The Classic’s honorary captains are two popular members of the Crunch’s original team in 1994: Scott Walker and Mike Peca. And the All-Star Classic will give Fulton fans another chance to see their favorite son, Portland Pirates forward and Fulton native Rob Schremp. In a November game at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena, Schremp thrilled the 400 or so fans who traveled from Fulton by scoring a goal in the Pirates’ 4-1 win over the Crunch. The All-Star Skills Competition (Sunday, 8 p.m., Onondaga County War Memorial): After Five for Fighting ends its set and Bartlett and McCarthy have left them rolling in the aisles, fans will be treated to the All-Star Skills Competition. Unlike the game, this competition will keep the traditional format with All-Stars from the Eastern Conference squaring off against All-Stars from the Western Conference in seven skills events: accuracy shooting, fastest skater, skills challenge relay, hardest shot, breakaway challenge and elimination shootout. For fans who think hockey is all about fighting, this event will change your mind. The All-Star Classic (Monday, 7 p.m., Onondaga County War Memorial): Instead of the traditional 60-minute game, the All-Star Classic will feature a new format with the all-stars being divided into four teams, one representing each of the league’s divisions. The teams will play a round-robin tournament with six games of nine minutes each; the first half of each game will be played at 4-on-4, and the second half at 3-on-3. The two teams with the best records at the end of the round-robin tournament will face off for the championship in a six-minute game played at 3-on-3. “When you’re doing on 5-on-5 with no hitting (as is the case in all-star games), there’s less room on the ice and it’s kind of like four corners in basketball,” Dolgon said. “Our new format is more compelling as it’ll be played at a very high pace and that’ll be great for the fans with the spectacular plays and great saves.” A limited number of tickets for the All-Star Classic and VIP Party are available and can be purchased at the Crunch office at the War Memorial, 800 S. State St., or by calling 473-4444. Tickets for just the AllStar Classic can be purchased through Ticketmaster. Prices range from $40 to $60 for the game, and there is a discount for Crunch season ticket holders and for those who also buy a ticket to the VIP Party. While that may seem pricey to the average fan, Dolgon said it’ll be worth every penny. And this time, he’d like to point out, he isn’t lying. “It’s more than just the skills competition and the game, it’s the Fan Fest and the VIP event and it’s all at what we believe is a very affordable price point,” Dolgon said. “It’s lower than last year’s (All-Star) game in Utica, and we’re giving people a lot more for their money.” Fast Fact: The 11th AHL All-Star Classic was played on Feb. 11, 1998, before a sold-out crowd of 6,230 at the Onondaga County War Memorial. Crunch forward Robert Dome had two assists as Team Canada defeated Team PlanetUSA 11-10. SNT

DO YOU REMEMBER THESE CRUNCH STARS?

Here’s the roll call: Lonny Bohonos and Scott Walker (1994-1995) Brian Loney (1995-1996) Larry Courville and John Namestnikov (19961997) Robert Dome and Mark Wotton (1997-1998) Valentin Morozov and Boris Protsenko (19981999) Harold Druken and Chris O’Sullivan (19992000) Mike Gaul (2000-2001) Derrick Walser and Duvie Westcott (2001-2002) Karl Goehring (2002-2003) Aaron Johnson (2003-2004) Alexander Svitov (2004-2005) Andy Delmore and Mark Hartigan (2005-2006) Filip Novak (2006-2007) Derick Brassard, Joakim Lindstrom and Clay Wilson (2007-2008) Nikita Filatov and Derek MacKenzie (20082009) Dan Fritsche (2009-2010) Kyle Palmieri (2010-2011, 2011-2012) Mark Barberio, Radko Gudas, Tyler Johnson and Richard Panik (2012-2013) Brett Connolly (2013-2014) Jonathan Marchessault and Vladislav Namestnikov (2014-2015). To this date, Pete Rose is the last man in MLB history to manage the team he also played for — known as a player-manager. He held TAKE these positions from Aug. 14, 1984 until Nov. 11, 1986, when he was released as a player, but was kept on as manager.

BASEBALL’S PETE ROSE STILL LOVES THE GAME

I

f you could ask Pete Rose one question, what would it be? Rose, Major League Baseball’s all-time hit king and No. 1 pariah, was the headline guest at the Syracuse Chiefs’ annual Hot Stove Dinner, held Jan. 22 at the Pirro Convention Center. A Chiefs fan who unwittingly wandered into Rose’s news conference before the event knew what he wanted to ask Rose, who was banned from Major League Baseball for gambling on baseball in 1989 while he was manager of the Cincinnati Reds. While the media members playfully sparred with Rose during the news conference, the fan unleashed the knockout punch: “Pete, you never bet against your team, right?” “Oh, don’t get on that betting shit,” Rose said. “Hell, no, I didn’t bet against my team. Nobody ever said I did. I don’t even like to waste my time on something that happened 30 years ago. I bet I can I bring something up 30 years in your life that you wouldn’t like to talk about. “But then again, I’m the only guy here with skeletons in the closet,” Rose said, sarcastically. “Think about it before you start saying that, guys. I made big mistakes, no question about it, and I paid for the mistakes, OK? And I wish I could change the mistakes but I can’t. You can’t change history. It’s there.” With new Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred denying Rose’s latest reinstatement

1.27.16 - 2.2.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

appeal, it’s likely that history will show that Rose’s lifetime ban remained a lifetime ban and he will never be admitted to the Hall of Fame. But here’s what history will also show: To baseball fans, Rose was and remains one of the game’s most popular players. That’s why about 950 people spent $65 ($30 for children) to hear Rose tell stories at the Hot Stove Dinner, and why 50 people spent $200 to participate in an autograph and meet-and-greet session with Rose. The Hot Stove guest list included heavyweights like Atlanta Braves pitcher and Baldwinsville native Jason Grilli, Chiefs manager Billy Gardner Jr. and Chiefs infielder Ricky Hague and his wife, country singer Lindsay James. But Rose, as usual, stole the show. “This is nice because we’re in January, it’s 8 degrees out, and we’ve got 950 people talking about baseball tonight,” Rose said. “So it can’t be a bad thing.”

Manfred said in his ruling that Rose has not “reconfigured” his life enough to merit reinstatement. (Rose lives and works in Las Vegas and admits he still gambles on sports.) Yet he remains one of the game’s greatest ambassadors as he follows the game closely, has opinions on everything related to baseball, and promotes the game at every turn. So, in many ways, Rose — who turns 75 in April — is the same swashbuckling player who won fans’ hearts by running to first base after a walk, sliding headfirst, and knocking over catcher Ray Fosse to win an all-star game. “I’m high on life, man,” Rose said. “I know I’ve got a hell of a lot more behind me than in front of me. And that was the only disappointing thing about the commissioner’s ruling, because I’m a teacher, man. I’m a teacher of baseball. And if I can teach one player to be a better player to make his team a better team, I’ve helped the game of baseball. That’s the way I look at it. I could be totally wrong, but I don’t think I am.” Rose will likely never get the chance to coach or manage again, but he will receive a special honor in June when he is inducted into the Cincinnati Reds’ Hall of Fame at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Here’s a safe bet: The stadium will be filled that day with fans who adore Rose. “If you want to know do I pray every night before I go to bed that I’m going to go to the Hall of Fame? No, I pray I’m going to get up the next morning,” Rose said, smiling. “I don’t ever worry about something I’m not in control of. I’m not in control of that, so why should I lose days of my life worrying about that, OK? I made the Reds’ Hall of Fame, that’s good enough for me, that’s a good start.” SNT

Judd is a handsome, 5-year-old Shepherd mix who loves to play! Fetch is his favorite game. He’s very friendly, but would do best in a home with older children or being supervised with small children since he’s big and boisterous! He loves to please and knows many commands including: sit, shake, and drop. Judd loves spending time with people and would prefer to be the only pet in his new family, so he can get all the attention for himself! Come visit Judd at Wanderers’ Rest today!

Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights? At one point, the heroine Catherine tells her friend about Edgar, a man she’s interested in. “He wanted all to lie in an ecstasy of peace,” Catherine says, “and I wanted all to sparkle and dance in a glorious jubilee. I said his heaven would be only half alive; and he said mine would be drunk: I said I should fall asleep in his; and he said he could not breathe in mine.” If you’re a typical Aries, you’re more aligned with Catherine than with Edgar. But I’m hoping you might consider making a temporary compromise in the coming weeks. “At last, we agreed to try both,” Catherine concluded, “and then we kissed each other and were friends.”

Tauruses for help in staying grounded. They love to soak up your down-to-earth pragmatism. They want your steadfastness to rub off on them, to provide them with the stability they see in you. You should be proud of this service you offer! It’s a key part of your appeal. Now and then, though, you need to demonstrate that your stalwart dependability is not static and stagnant — that it’s strong exactly because it’s flexible and adaptable. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to emphasize this aspect of your superpower.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) When winter

comes, pine trees that grow near mountaintops may not be able to draw water and minerals from the ground through their roots. The sustenance they require is frozen. Luckily, their needle-like leaves absorb moisture from clouds and fog, and drink in minerals that float on the wind. Metaphorically speaking, Gemini, this will be your preferred method for getting nourished in the coming weeks. For the time being, look UP to obtain what you need. Be fed primarily by noble ideals, big visions, divine inspiration and high-minded people.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Playwright

Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) had a lot of friends, and they often came to visit him uninvited. He found it hard to simply tell them to go away and leave him alone. And yet he hated to be interrupted while he was working. His solution was to get naked and write for long hours while in his bathroom, usually soaking in the bathtub. His intrusive friends rarely had the nerve to insist on socializing. In this way, Rostand found the peace he needed to create his masterpiece Cyrano de Bergerac, as well as numerous other plays. I suggest you consider a comparable gambit, Scorpio. You need to carve out some quality alone time.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “I opened my

mouth, almost said something. Almost. The rest of my life might have turned out differently if I had. But I didn’t.” The preceding reminiscence belongs to a character in Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner. I bring it up in hopes that you will do the opposite: Say the words that need to be said. Articulate what you’re burning to reveal. Speak the truths that will send your life on a course that’s in closer alignment with your pure intentions.

phases when we are at odds with people we love. Maybe we’re mad at them, or feel hurt by them, or can’t comprehend what they’re going through. The test of our commitment is how we act when we are in these moods. That’s why I agree with author Steve Hall when he says, “The truest form of love is how you behave toward someone, not how you feel about them.” The coming weeks will be an important time for you to practice this principle with extra devotion — not just for the sake of the people you care about, but also for your own physical, mental, and spiritual health.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) According to some traditional astrologers, you Capricorns are vigilant to avoid loss. Old horoscope books suggest that you may take elaborate measures to avoid endangering what you have accumulated. To ensure that you will never run out of what you need, you may even ration your output and limit your self-expression. This behavior is rooted in the belief that you should conserve your strength by withholding or even hiding your power. While there may be big grains of truth in this conventional view of you Capricorns, I think it’s only part of the story. In the coming weeks, for instance, I bet you will wield your clout with unabashed authority. You won’t save yourself for later; you’ll engage in no strategic self-suppression. Instead, you will be expansive and unbridled as you do whatever’s required to carry out the important foundation work that needs to be done.

killing each other for years on end, the Roman and Persian armies agreed to a truce in 532 A.D. The treaty was optimistically called “The Endless Peace.” Sadly, “endless” turned out to be just eight years. By 540, hostilities resumed. I’m happy to announce, though, that your prospects for accord and rapprochement are much brighter. If you work diligently to negotiate an endless peace anytime between now and March 15, it really is likely to last a long time.

called it “the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare.” This milestone occurred just six months after Japan’s devastating attack on U.S. forces at Pearl Harbor. To compare your life to these two events may be bombastic, but I’m in a bombastic mood as I contemplate your exciting possibilities. I predict that in the second half of 2016, you’ll claim a victory that will make up for a loss or defeat you endured during the last few months of 2015. And right now is when you can lay the groundwork for that future triumph.

how easy it is to be totally wrong about people, to see one tiny part of them and confuse it for the whole.” Author Lauren Oliver wrote that, and now I’m offering it to you, just in time for your Season of Correction and Adjustment. The coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to get smarter about evaluating your allies — and maybe even one of your adversaries, as well. I expect you will find it relatively easy, even pleasurable, to overcome your misimpressions and deepen your incomplete understandings.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) In June 1942, the

U.S. Navy crushed Japanese naval forces at the Battle of Midway. It was a turning point that was crucial to America’s ultimate victory over Japan in World War II. One military historian

the whole time you’re living this life, you’re thinking about a different one instead,” wrote Latvian novelist Inga Abele in her novel High Tide. Have you ever been guilty of that, Aquarius? Probably. Most of us have at one time or another. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the coming months will bring you excellent opportunities to graduate forever from this habit. Not all at once, but gradually and incrementally, you can shed the idea that you should be doing something other than what you’re doing. You can get the hang of what it’s like to thoroughly accept and embrace the life you are actually living. And now is an excellent time to get started in earnest on this project.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “Even nightingales can’t be fed on fairy tales,” says a character in Ivan Turgenev’s novel Fathers and Sons. In other words, these marvelous birds, which sing sublimely and have long been invoked by poets to symbolize lyrical beauty, need actual physical sustenance. They can’t eat dreamy stories. Having acknowledged that practical fact, however, I will suggest that right now you require dreamy stories and rambling fantasies and imaginary explorations almost as much as you need your daily bread. Your soul’s hunger has reached epic proportions. It’s time to gorge.

HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE. New York State Law requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully.Summons and Complaint. You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. Sources of Information and Assistance. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-BANK NYS (1-877-226-5697) or visit the Department’s website at www.banking.state.ny.us. Foreclosure Rescue Scams. Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.
