Slightest Provocation

Police arrested Orlando Thompson, 26, in Panama City, Fla., after they said he killed a co-worker at a seafood restaurant during an argument over the amount of spice to put in gumbo. British authorities said Rostam Notarki, 53, used an ironing board to kill Charles Hickox in London. According to witnesses and surveillance footage, Hickox entered Notarki’s pub, brandishing a tennis racket in each hand and accusing the landlord of substituting cheap wine for the three expensive bottles Hickox had bought and taking his credit card. After threatening to “crack some ribs,” Hickox pushed Notarki with one of the rackets and then ran off. Notarki gave

chase, “holding the ironing board aloft and horizontally,” prosecutor Michelle Nelson told the Old Bailey jury. He struck Hickox from behind with the ironing board, pushing him into the road, where he hit his head on the wheel of a passing van. He died an hour later. (Britain’s Metro)

Warren Jones, a city councilor in Jacksonville, Fla., introduced a bill making it illegal for homeowners to back into their own driveway. Jones said the proposal would crack down on the visual blight caused by owners parking inoperative vehicles backward so officials can’t read license plates, which Florida requires only on the rear. If the vehicle tag isn’t visible from the street, the measure requires the owner to write down the information with 2-inch-tall letters and post it where city code enforcement inspectors can easily see it from the street. The Orange is making its 38th NCAA Tournament appearance overall and 32nd under Coach Jim Boeheim. SU has advanced to five TAKE Final Fours (1975, 1987, 1996, 2003, 2013) and won the national championship in 2003.

SU STYMIES BRACKET QUACKS WITH NCAA SEED

W

hat’s this? Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim was happy? Did Tyler Roberson grab a rebound? Are leisure suits and big, round glasses back in style? Did the local media disappear? No, Boeheim had one of the happiest days of his 40-year coaching life because the Orange, seemingly on the outside looking in for this year’s NCAA Tournament, was miraculously included when the field of 68 was announced Sunday, March 13. “This is the happiest I’ve been on Selection Sunday in all my years of coaching,” said Boeheim, who became SU’s head coach in 1976. “I couldn’t be any happier for this group.” Syracuse, which finished 19-13 overall, received a No. 10 seed in the Midwest Region and will face No. 7 seed Dayton (25-7) on Friday, March 18, 12:15 p.m., at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. If the Orange gets past Dayton, it will meet No. 2 seed and Big Ten Conference champion Michigan State in the second round Sunday in St. Louis. Most NCAA Tournament bracket experts had SU on the bubble or out after the Orange lost its first

Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament game to Pittsburgh March 9. That was Syracuse’s third loss this season to Pitt (another bubble team that got in), and its fifth loss in its last six games, supposedly wiping out SU’s impressive 8-1 stretch that followed an 0-4 start in the ACC. University of Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee chairman, said the Orange received one of the 36 at-large bids because it had more wins against teams ranked in the top 50 of the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) than the bubble teams that were left out. In fact, SU notched wins against five teams in the top 32: Texas A&M (18), Duke (20), St. Bonaventure (30), Notre Dame (31) and Connecticut (32). “I held hope that our road win at Duke, the Texas A&M and Connecticut games (at the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament in November) and beating five teams in

the top 30 would play out,” Boeheim said. “I think once we started seeing some of the teams get in that only had two wins against the top 50 or top 75, we did have a chance then.” (In case you’re wondering, the Orange is ranked No. 72 in the RPI. Dayton is No. 22 and Michigan State is No. 12.) In 2007, the nation sympathized with the Orange when it was left out of the tournament despite a 22-win season. This year, SU’s selection left many college basketball followers scratching their heads and bemoaning the absence of mid-major darlings such as St. Bonaventure and Monmouth. “Even with all the known weaknesses of the RPI, do you know how hard it is to have the number Syracuse had given their decent non-conference schedule and an ACC slate?” wrote ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, the most well-known of the bracketologists. “The only way to do it is to lose too many games to the wrong teams. That’s why William & Mary, Stony Brook, Hofstra, Chattanooga, Valparaiso, Little Rock, UNC Wilmington, Yale, Princeton, Akron and, yes, Monmouth all had better RPIs than the Orange.” But here’s what the ratings and numbers don’t necessarily tell you: When the Orange is at its best — when at least two out of the Michael Gbinije, Trevor Cooney and Malachi Richardson backcourt triumvirate are hitting their 3-pointers, when Roberson is cleaning up the glass, and when Tyler Lydon is providing a spark off the bench — SU can play with anyone. Just ask East Region No. 1 seed North Carolina, which had to rally late to beat SU at the Carrier Dome and had to hold off the charging Orange in Chapel Hill, N.C. “We proved we were a good team,” Cooney said. “We had one bad loss (to St. John’s) but all of our losses were close games. We were in every single game and not many teams in the country can say

that. I think that says a lot about us as a team.” Indeed, the Orange had to overcome several on-court obstacles, including a first-year starting point guard in Gbinije, three freshmen who played key roles (Richardson, Lydon and Frank Howard), a center returning after missing almost two years with injuries (DaJuan Coleman), and Boeheim’s NCAA-imposed nine-game suspension that stretched from early December through SU’s first three ACC games. The Orange went 4-5 in those games with devastating losses to St. John’s and Georgetown. But now, in a surprising twist, the Orange will get a chance to avenge its most recent NCAA Tournament loss to Dayton in the second round of the 2014 tournament. (SU’s self-imposed ban kept it out of the 2015 tournament.) The Flyers, who captured a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season title with a 14-4 record, outlasted a cold-shooting Syracuse team 55-53 in Buffalo in 2014. Coached by Archie Miller, the brother of Arizona coach Sean Miller, the Flyers reached the A-10 Championship semifinals this year before losing to eventual champion St. Joseph’s. Dayton is led by a pair of All-Atlantic 10 players: junior guard Charles Cooke (15.7 points per game) and senior forward Dyshawn

TAPPING BEER AND MAPLE AT CRITZ FARMS

I

t’s almost spring. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the sap is flowing (or has been) and being boiled into syrup at Cazenovia’s Critz Farms.

Maple Weekends, the annual statewide homage to Mother Nature’s liquid-gold sweet treat, are coming up Saturday, March 19, and Sunday, March 20, and again on April 2 and 3. Critz Farms has a host of activities planned, and has even added an extra Saturday (March 26) to its celebration of all things maple. Visitors can take a wagon ride to the sugar bush, check out the vacuum system that collects sap and see sap being made into syrup in the sugarhouse. They can also dig into an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet at the Critz Café, featuring pancakes topped with warm syrup (what else?) and ham swimming in syrup. The playground and petting zoo will also be open during Maple Weekends. This season, there’s more than maple to get excited about at the almost year-round agri-tourism destination. Owners Matthew and Juanita Critz have added beer to the list of items grown and produced on the farm, which includes everything from apples and blueberries to pumpkins and Christmas trees. Their first beers under the new Critz Farms Brewing and Cider Co. label will be available Thursday,

March 17: pale ale, Imperial Pale Ale, Pig City Porter and maple porter. “It’s exciting,’’ Juanita Critz said last week. “We’re really looking forward to bringing our beer to market.’’ Juanita Critz said adding beer production to the mix is a natural extension of what they already do. In 2011, at the urging of friends and customers, the Critzes launched Harvest Moon Cidery, and started making hard cider with their own hand-pressed sweet cider as a base. They began with six varieties, ranging from very dry to sweet and fruity. They have since added several flavors, including one made with local hops and several made with their own maple syrup. Critz Farms celebrated its 30th anniversary last year. The Critzes grew their own barley for the first time, took the first steps in establishing a hop yard and applied for the necessary licenses to start brewing beer. They also hired head brewer Keith Lindner. Around Thanksgiving, they poured their first beers. “We’re very pleased,’’ Critz said of their progress.

Their small brewing operation is similar in size to nearby Henneberg Brewery, and much smaller than the Empire Farmhouse Brewery taking shape a few miles down the road. It’s a 2.5-barrel brewing system, so Critz is technically classified as a nano brewery. A barrel equals roughly 71 gallons of beer. “Like with any craft brewery, the batches are small and you have it until you sell it,’’ Juanita Critz said. They plan to change what they offer seasonally, and are likely to experiment with their blueberries in beer. A popular hard cider, Blueberry Moon, also uses their blueberries. As for maple season: It arrived early this year, thanks to warmer-than-usual temperatures, and may end earlier than usual for the same reason. Ideal maple conditions call for temperatures above freezing during the day and below freezing at night. Last week, producers like the Critzes last week found themselves crossing their fingers for colder weather. Continued warm temperatures could cause the maple trees to start budding. Critz Farms, 3232 Rippleton Road (Route 13), Cazenovia, is about four miles south of Route 20. Sugar bush tours and maple syrup tastings will be offered March 19, 20 and 26 and April 2 and

TOM KENNY HIGHLIGHTS 2016 PARADE MARCH

T

he annual St. Patrick’s Parade wound through downtown Syracuse’s streets on March 12, and the usual suspects were in attendance, including former Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh (facing page, lower left) dressed as St. Patrick, U.S. Sen, Chuck Schumer (middle, right) accompanied by his entourage and media personalities from local radio and television stations. A Santa Claus sighting seemed a little out of the ordinary (does this mean Y94 will rev up its continuous Christmas programming already?) amid the sunny Saturday with temperatures in the 60s, but everyone had a good time.

The parade’s center of attraction had to be East Syracuse native Tom Kenny (top, right), the animated voice behind TV’s SpongeBob SquarePants. Much like the characters whose jaws would comically drop through the pavement during an old Tex Avery cartoon, the kids on the sidelines were agog with amazement as Kenny ambled down Clinton Square to glad-hand with parade watchers and ham it up for cameras. Accompanied by a gaggle of youngsters who were perched in a teensy nautical-themed boat float, Kenny kept his audience laughing with one-liners such as “The parade’s not over until we all get arrested!” To quote from the movie Jaws, if Kenny gets invited back for a parade encore, he’s gonna need a bigger boat. MOURNING MICHAEL MOODY

T

he mural on the wall at the corner of Westcott and South Beech streets depicts neighborhood residents, including a man with a baby, a woman walking a dog and the late Tony DeLuca, longtime proprietor of Abdo’s Grocery Store. It also showcases the artistic skills of Michael Moody who died Feb. 28 at age 66. He’s mourned by his family, by people in the Westcott Nation neighborhood where he lived most of his life, and throughout Syracuse’s arts community.

Moody took part in numerous exhibitions, at venues such as the Community Folk Art Center, Onondaga Community College and the Syracuse Tech Garden. He also showed his work at the Plowshares Crafts Fair and Peace Festival, staged the first weekend of every December, and at the Westcott Street Cultural Fair, where he typically set up his booth just a foot away from the mural he painted during 1997. And he traveled out of town for the Black Arts Festival in Atlanta and the Black Arts Expo in Philadelphia. At all those sites, he displayed what he called “Moodyart,” a body of work not easily summarized. When he portrayed a blues musician, he included a standard-issue guitar, but dressed the musician in a tunic made of geometric forms, triangles and other shapes bathed 3.16.16 - 3.22.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

The late Michael Moody’s mural, found on the wall at the corner of Westcott and South Beech streets. Michael Davis photos in bright colors. Moody’s portrayal of a trombonist emphasized the physicality of playing the instrument. In a different type of work, he placed 10 people in a room, combining small figures, eye-popping color and a visual hook. His most distinctive pieces put ordinary people into otherworldly landscapes. In one work, two people walk down a path and encounter creatures not of this earth. In a second artwork, humans end up light years away from our planet. There Moody wasn’t creating a science-fiction narrative; he was letting his imagination take its course.

Although his oils and acrylics didn’t often focus on current events, he did create a painting referencing Rodney King’s beating by members of the California Highway Patrol. During gallery receptions and festivals, he liked to discuss his work, pieces created by other artists and challenges faced by emerging artists. During those conversations, he stressed one imperative: Find and sustain your own vision. That’s a principle that guided his artistic career for more than 25 years. SNT

Opus Black String Quartet performs Tuesday, March 22, 7 p.m., at the Colgate Inn, 1 Payne St., Hamilton. Admissions is free, although there is a $5 suggested donation.

QUICK TAKE

By Lindsey O’Laughlin Opus Black String Quartet: From left: Kristen Kopf, cello; Liz Friedel, violin; Juliane Price, violin; Allyson Sklar, viola.

OPUS IS THE NEW BLACK

T

hey call themselves Opus Black, a name reminiscent of an experimental metal band. Indeed, the group does experiment and push musical boundaries, but not with drums and guitars.

Instead, the Opus Black String Quartet is an alternative string ensemble with a penchant for the unorthodox. Built on a common foundation of classical training, their backgrounds are as diverse as their repertoire, counting among them a German-born mezzo-soprano and violinist, a big band horn player and cellist, a blues fiddler and a Celtic-classical violist. Rehearsing at the studio of first violinist Liz Friedel, the foursome played Led Zeppelin’s “All My Love” before moving on to a jazzy deconstruction of “And I Love Her” by The Beatles. Friedel, 31, is a self-described musician-for-hire and freelance violinist through her business, Music with Liz. She performs regularly with the groups Vagabond Station and D-Ras and the Lizard, crossing genres from bluegrass and Irish fiddle to jazz and blues. Friedel also teaches at her private studio in Verona. “We’re starting a revolution,” she noted. That revolution is a push toward collaboration among Central New York musicians and a movement outside the classical realm. Their folders held music by The Cranberries, Eurythmics, Queen and American minimalist composer Philip Glass. They aren’t the first classical-turned-alternative quartet in the market; Los Angeles-based Vitamin

String Quartet has been recording pop-rock-alternative tribute records for years. Yet they are the first in Central New York, and they have their own style and ethos. For every member of Opus Back, teaching is as much of their lives as performing. Kristen Kopf, the group’s cellist, has been teaching music in public schools for 23 years, many of them as director of orchestral programs at Roxboro Road Elementary and Middle Schools. She currently teaches classroom music at Gillette Road Middle School in Cicero, where her students learn guitar and play in a steel-pan band. Commenting on the challenges facing present-day arts organizations, particularly those within classical music, Kopf mentioned a fear of change that keeps the arts from reaching young audiences. “Consumers change, children change, everything keeps changing,” she said. “Doing the same 100- or 200-year-old model is ineffective. It doesn’t work.” That perspective drives the group to perform in nontraditional venues like bar gigs and festivals. In their premiere performance last May, they opened the Bacon and Bourbon Festival at the Ridge Golf Club and Tavern in Chittenango. Jordan Davies, organizer of February’s Beats in the Sheets concert at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre, was the group’s original violist but has since left to

focus on his new business, oRIDGEinal Productions. When Davies left the group, Allyson Sklar took over as violist. Sklar, 54, is also deeply rooted in education. She received her master’s in education from the Manhattan School of Music and taught strings in New York City public schools while freelancing as a performer, picking up a Suzuki teaching certification along the way. She also plays in the Irish fiddling group Craobh Dugan. Now based in Utica, Sklar teaches violin and viola at her New Hartford studio, Valley Talent Education Center, including both classical and Celtic fiddle technique. She enjoys Opus Black’s jazz repertoire, and is looking forward to increasing their exposure and sharing their music. “Just a lot of performances,” she said. “I’d like to play a lot of concerts, weddings, parties.” Education in schools, studios and the listening public is central to the ethos of Opus Black. Violinist Juliane Price is the director of Clever Canaries Music Together, an early childhood and family music program with locations in Rome, Clinton and Hamilton. Price, 37, is a classically trained mezzo-soprano with a master’s degree in vocal performance. Originally from Germany, she played the violin as a child before shifting her focus to voice. For her, seeing the reaction of new listeners is one of the best parts of the job. “They’re curious,” she said. “In the bars in Sylvan Beach, if you talk about it, they go, ‘You know, I would actually go and listen to that string quartet,’ whereas they would never ever go to a Beethoven or a Haydn or Bach or Mozart concert.” Their next performance will be Tuesday, March 22, at Hamilton’s Colgate Inn, as part of the Local Music Project, a weekly concert series organized by folksinger-guitarist Bruce Ward. “Most people — and I guess it’s that classical handicap — you learn how to read music and you get stuck on the page,” said Friedel. “It happens to everybody, and it takes a long time to break yourself away from the page. This is a unique group of people. We can do both.” SNT

ROCKING

OUT

Young Vernon guitarist Molly D’Agostino goes solo with a debut album By Jessica Novak

W

hen Molly D’Agostino was 13 years old, she saw the progressive rock outfit Trans-Siberian Orchestra in concert for the first time. Although she had played clarinet in school, it was the TSO show that introduced her to her true love: guitar. She got her first axe soon after as a birthday gift and quickly taught herself the instrument.

Just three years later, in 2011 she formed the band Pacinello with vocalist Mollie Barbaritano in a classroom at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School. The group was named after the pacer horse Pacinello, which has raced often at Vernon Downs. Continuing the horsey connection, Molly’s father is harness racing trainer and driver Joe D’Agostino, who at one point played drums for his daughter’s group. Pacinello submitted their music to the 2013 edition of the Grammy Live: Gig of a Lifetime, a Grammy Association-sponsored competition that was looking for up-and-coming talent. When Pacinello placed in the top 15 out of more than 2,000 bands, Arrowhead Records took notice and signed the group later that year. “It was really exciting for anyone to be in that position,” D’Agostino says. “The initial day I found out was the most exciting thing. I’m still really proud we did that as a band. We worked really hard for it.” D’Agostino is now 21 and more accomplished than ever. She owns and runs Vertica Entertainment, a company that writes and records custom wedding songs. D’Agostino has also signed with Los Angeles’ R&R Entertainment and will release VICI, her first solo album, on April 26. Although Pacinello had found success as an opening act for bands such as the All-American Rejects, Secret State and Pop Evil, the group broke up in 2014 after moving to R&R. The band is back together now, however, that temporary downtime allowed D’Agostino a chance to branch out with writing and recording at her home studio. “I never sang,” D’Agostino says, “but I was playing with someone and sang something and they helped me get the confidence to do it. I was always writing for Pacinello with Mollie and she did the melodies and vocals. We pitched the solo idea to management and they liked it. They worked out a distribution deal and now I’m really excited about it.” VICI was recorded in August 2015 between D’Agostino’s home studio and FOS Studios in New York City. D’Agostino wrote the songs, sang and played all of the guitar parts. The name of the album is Latin for “I conquered,” made famous by Julius Caesar, and reflects the attitude of D’Agostino’s songs. “This is not an apology record,” she explains. “It’s not meant to apologize to

someone, but to apologize to yourself. The whole message is about being a girl in music. We don’t owe an apology to anyone for being who we are. It might sound like a breakup album, but it’s not that. You can only apologize to someone so much until it’s just no. We are us and we deserve to be us. “It’s not mushy. I went through a really interesting relationship when I wrote this. . . actually two. This album is about being a strong person, believing in yourself and not taking shit.” D’Agostino’s leap from a band member to a solo performer took some adjustment, but it’s also exciting. “I’ve never been a lead singer,” she says. “I enjoy it, but it’s weird going out on your own, but also cool. You have creative control.” The move is liberating for D’Agostino as she finds her own sound. “VICI sounds like Katy Perry having a barbecue with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Shinedown,” she says. “I’m really excited about it. I hope people will like it and give it a chance. It means a lot to me in a lot of ways. And I really owe a lot of it to a lot of great people.” D’Agostino mentions her guitarist mentors, Satchel of Steel Panther and Chris Caffery of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. “A lot of great people have helped me,” she says. “I owe them a lot.” Yet it’s D’Agostino’s work ethic and vision that move her forward. “The biggest thing for me is that you can’t hold onto the past and expect a great future,” she says. “You always have to be willing to progress yourself. You have to be open-minded and willing to work hard. You have to be willing to send 300 emails a day and get one response. “And you have to believe in yourself. Nobody can see your vision like you can see it. Every time you get told no, it’s just another step toward the right door. I can’t even tell you how many times I was told no. Every time I was told no, it was one step in the right direction to get told yes.” SNT Molly D’Agostino will perform with the local country band Nothin’ Town (which features her drummer-dad Joe) on Saturday, March 19, 9 p.m., at the Colonial Inn, 3071 Route 370, Meridian. She also will play May 14 at Vernon Downs Casino. For more information on Vertica Entertainment, visit verticaentertainment. com.

LIFE AND DEATH AT GROVER’S CORNERS

When a first-time director undertakes such a familiar property as Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, you can be sure he wants to do something different. The results are on display in the current Central New York Playhouse production. The central paradox of the play, the plainspoken fused with the adventuresome, continues to keep it startling after all these years. We have the lives of ordinary, small-town New Hampshire Protestants presented in a vehicle inspired by Wilder’s advanced European contemporaries, including Luigi Pirandello, Bertolt Brecht and James Joyce. But changing one key character shifts the tone of the whole, like putting a new filter on the lens of your camera. That lens into Grover’s Corners is usually the detached narrator but now there are two. Both are younger and more engaged. And of different sexes. Wilder called that narrator the Stage Manager. His first function is to banish conventional realism and remind audiences of the artifice they are encountering. He tells us what the bare stage leaves out, like who lives on the right or the wrong side of the tracks, without any hint of editorial judgment. To give his words the resonance of history, the Stage Manager is usually a role for a smooth-talking guy of advanced years. Recently both Paul Newman and Hal Holbrook mesmerized audiences while in their 80s.

14

Erin Williamson and Abel Searor in Our Town. Amelia Beamish photo

In his program notes, director Liam Fitzpatrick generously acknowledges that he has precedent for splitting the Stage Manager in two persons. More audacious are his casting choices. The first Stage Manager is the dark-browed Abel Searor, the ubiquitous music director who has already earned two Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) awards but not for speaking roles. With his high starched collar and proclivity for frowning, Searor’s articulate Manager is a reminder of mortality for a drama that ends in a cemetery. Opposed to him, like a comic mask tilted toward the tragic, is the sanguine Erin Williamson as the other Stage Manager. Although she has played terrifying villains, such as in Rarely Done’s 2010 production of The Shape of Things, Williamson is best known as an ebullient song-and-dance girl. Her presence is Fitzpatrick’s signal to us that although life is short, there are moments of joy, even ecstasy, that must be seized.

3.16.16 - 3.22.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Having nearly two-dozen speaking roles, the very feature that makes Our Town popular with high schools, is a challenge for community theater groups. Fitzpatrick generally places his most experienced players in mature roles. Both the Gibbses (swain George Gibbs’ parents) and the Webbs (ingénue Emily Gibbses’ family) reside securely in Grover’s Corners’ professional class, but there are evolving differences between them. Doc Gibbs (Rob Searle) is an earnest, solid citizen but his wife, Julia (Kathy Egloff), has never shaken off the wanderlust of youth and has been saving up for a possible trip to Paris. In a town admittedly bereft of the fine arts, the newspaper-owning Webbs might appear to be literati. Certainly editor Charles Webb (J. Allan Orton) is assigned more than his share of the show’s wittier lines. Orton, so remarkable as Biff in Central New York Playhouse’s March 2014 Death of a Salesman, is unhampered by appearing to be two decades younger than his character. Mrs. Myrtle Webb appears to be quieter and more domestic but Michaela Oney limns a subtle inner life for her. If it takes a village, if not a town, to raise a child, Wilder also wants us to see the offspring as permutations of their parents. Young George Gibbs (Nic MacLane), who looks a bit like Keir Dullea, grasps tightly to the wonder of youth and is reluctant to take responsibility. Pigtailed Emily Webb (Carleena Manzi) inherits the soulfulness of her mother and the wordsmithing of her father to become the emotional center of the drama. While the love scenes with George could use a little more electricity, Manzi has full command of some of Wilder’s best prose poetry. Thanks to Fitzpatrick’s connections to the larger theater community, he has pulled in leading players from other productions for emphatic walk-ons here, notably Leila Dean as Mrs. Louella Soames, the exuberant witness at the wedding, and Ben Sills as the forthright Constable Warren. For such an ostensibly bare-bones show, important contributions appear backstage, starting with Kate Kisselstein’s trunkload of period costumes. Ed Mastin’s dialect coaching guarantees better N’ampshuh accents than we heard in the recent primary in the Granite State. And the sound design from Rob Searle, Nic MacLane and Dustin Czarny ensures that the town choo-choo arrives on cue. SNT

AGELESS INSIGHTS FROM THE CENTURY CLUB

Categorizing Older Than Ireland as a documentary may be questionable. Yes, there are 30 Irish centenarians featured in the 80-minute film, recounting aspects of their long lives that should be illuminating for audience members, since the majority of us were not born in Ireland or before the Easter Rising of 1916. Director Alex Fegan’s film is more of a conversation, however, with 100-plusyear-olds who are also incredibly independent. Experiences, personalities and life in a different country may differ, but the humanistic qualities — love, first kisses, coping with death and reflecting on their first pair of shoes — weave strings of familiarity, blurring age gaps and cultural borders. Older Than Ireland, named best documentary at last summer’s Galway

Film Festival, will receive its stateside premiere on Thursday, March 24, at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre. Among the centenarians chronicled in the film, no matter the age, the consensus is that a birthday is just another birthday. The emphasis is a posed question: Does age really matter, and should a number be a catalyst of anxiety? The subjects’ mannerisms say otherwise. Bessie Nolan, 103, is often featured with a cigarette. Nolan, whose humor is consistently as dry as a Central New Yorker’s skin on an early February morning, said that everyone should die at 70. Other centenarians include Michael O’Connor, 101, who sits casually in his Volkswagen Jetta. Una Reid, 100, is interviewed while getting her hair done. Jackie O’Sullivan, 102, is dressed to the

nines, while Jimmy Barry, 103, sits with shades on, but both are definitively casual and cool. Syracuse’s Kathleen Snavely, 113 years old at the time the cameras rolled (she died last July), nonchalantly explained there really isn’t a secret to living a long life. “I get sick of it,” she said. “How did you do it? I did.” Snavely also talked about heading to New York City and essentially not being able to look back due to starting a new life. For those who have seen the recent movie Brooklyn or other films on Irish immigration, Older Than Ireland illustrates the difficulties of relocation and its strain on families. Life does not get any easier with aging. Luke Dolan, 108, is the film’s only bedridden centenarian. Despite physical independence, other societal weights fall on the shoulders and mind of any person and at any age. One downside is loneliness,

since their friends and families have all passed on. Cast members recall falling in love and missing their partners, because through death they did part. Not all memories were love-focused. Explanations of relationships highlighted strain, and some of the jabs, which could possibly be taken as humor, served as a reminder that not all relationships are blissful. Yet there was also positive reinforcement: Nothing, a relationship or otherwise, will pan out unless patience and work are put into it. Older Than Ireland serves as a constant reminder to respect one’s elders: Their aspects of life experience cannot be contained (or omitted) from history books. These are not our grandparents or great-grandparents sitting us down to teach us a lesson. They are people who remind us through their experiences, saying we should be taking care of ourselves and — as cliché as it is — living each day as if it could be our last. SNT

Support the public schools and colleges our kids deserve. For the first time in years, New York State has a $5.4 billion budget surplus, instead of a deficit. State lawmakers should use some of that surplus now, to correct years of inadequate funding for public education. Moreover, the flawed tax cap law has worsened the funding problem. Because the tax cap is near zero, school districts across the state are unable to raise the revenue needed to provide the academic and support services our kids need and deserve. In fact, more than ten percent of school districts will be forced to cut their school budgets, inflicting even more pain on students.

NYSUT is calling for: n a school aid increase of $2.5 billion and, n a $1 billion increase in state funding for SUNY, CUNY and New York’s community colleges.

Our kids and college students deserve more. Increase state aid to public education. syracusenewtimes.com | 3.16.16 - 3.22.16

What’s in your stars?

FREE WILL ASTRO LOGY

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) Artist Steven Spa-

suk works exclusively with an unusual medium: soot from candles and torches. He spreads the stuff across a blank canvas, then uses various instruments to sculpt the accidental blobs into definitive forms. I’ve seen the results, and they’re both well-done and intriguing. What would be the metaphorical equivalent, in your world, of using soot to make beautiful and interesting things? I think you’re primed to turn waste into building blocks, rot into splendor, and lead into gold. (See Spazuk’s work at spazuk.com.)

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) Carl Sagan said that science thrives on “two seemingly contradictory attitudes: an openness to new ideas, no matter how bizarre or counterintuitive, and the most ruthless skeptical scrutiny of all ideas, old and new.” Whether or not you are a scientist, Taurus, I recommend that you practice this approach in the coming weeks. It’s the tool that’s most likely to keep you centered and free of both rigidity and illusion. As Sagan concluded, this is “how deep truths are winnowed from deep nonsense.” GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) “Excess on occasion

is exhilarating,” said British author W. Somerset Maugham. “It prevents moderation from acquiring the deadening effect of a habit.” Now would be an excellent time to take that advice to heart, Gemini. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you not only have a license to engage in rowdy fun and extravagant pleasures; it’s your sacred duty. So get out there and treat yourself to an orgy of naughty adventures -- or at least a celebration of meaningful thrills. You can return to the rigors of discipline and order once you have harvested the healthy benefits that will come from escaping them.

CANCER. (June 21-July 22) At one point in Frie-

drich Nietzsche’s book Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the hero is having a conversation with himself. “You have wanted to pet every monster,” he says. “A whiff of warm breath, a little soft tuft on the paw -- and at once you were ready to love and to lure it.” If I were you, Cancerian, I would regard that type of behavior as forbidden in the coming weeks. In fact, I will ask you not to pet any monsters at all -- not even the cute ones; not even the beasties and rascals and imps that have slight resemblances to monsters. It’s time for maximum discernment and caution. (P.S.: One of the monsters may ultimately become a non-monstrous ally if you are wary toward it now.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) On a social media site, I posted the following quote from self-help teacher Byron Katie: “Our job is unconditional love. The job of everyone else in our life is to push our buttons.” One commenter took issue with this. “’Pushing buttons’ is a metaphor that’s long past its expiration date,” she wrote. “Can’t you come up with something fresher?” So I did. Here are a few potential substitutes for “push our buttons”: tweak our manias, prank our obsessions, glitter-bomb our biases, squeeze our phobias, badger our compulsions, seduce our repressions, prick our dogmas. Whichever expression you prefer, Leo, find a graceful way to embrace your fate: Your current job is unconditional love. The job of everyone else in your life is to tweak your manias and prick your dogmas. VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) In the coming weeks, you will have maximum power to revise and reinvigorate your approach to cultivating intimate relationships. To aid your quest, I offer this paraphrased advice from Andrew Boyd: Almost every one of us seeks a special partner who is just right. But there is no right person, just different flavors of wrong. Why? Because you yourself are “wrong” in some ways: You have demons and flaws and problems. In fact, these “wrongs” are essential components of who you are. When you ripen into this understanding, you’re ready to find and be with your special counterpart. He or she has the precise set of

by Rob Brezsny

problems you need, and is the person who is wrong for you in just the right ways. (See Boyd’s original quote: tinyurl.com/boydquote.)

LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) In her book The

Winter Vault, Anne Michaels says, “We become ourselves when things are given to us or when things are taken away.” If she’s right, does it mean we should be grateful for those times when things are taken away? Should we regard moments of loss as therapeutic prods that compel us to understand ourselves better and to create ourselves with a fiercer determination? Meditate on these possibilities, Libra. In the meantime, I’m pleased to announce that the things-getting-taken-away period of your cycle is winding down. Soon you’ll begin a new phase, when you can become a deeper, stronger version of yourself because of the things that are given to you.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) “I’ll make love when the lust subsides,” sings Denitia, one-half of the electro-pop band Denitia and Sene. That would be a good motto for you to play around with in the coming days, Scorpio -- in both literal and metaphorical ways. I’ll enjoy seeing how your emotional intelligence ripens as the whitehot passion of recent weeks evolves into a more manageable warmth. As fun as the intensity has been, it has blinded you to some of the possibilities for collaborative growth that have been emerging. You may now be ready to explore and appreciate sweeter, subtler pleasures. SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “The poems I

have loved the most are those I have understood the least,” said T.S. Eliot. I’m going to steal and expand upon his idea for the purpose of giving you an accurate horoscope. In the coming days, Sagittarius, I suspect that the experiences you love most will be those that you understand the least. Indeed, the experiences you need the most will be those that surprise and mystify and intrigue you. Luckily, life will be ingenious in bypassing your analytical intelligence so as to provide you with rich emotional stimuli for your soul.

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorn painter Henri Matisse made the following testimony about his creative process: “At each stage I reach a balance, a conclusion. At the next sitting, if I find that there is a weakness in the whole, I make my way back into the picture by means of the weakness -- I re-enter through the breach -- and I reconceive the whole. Thus everything becomes fluid again.” I recommend this approach to you in the coming days, Capricorn. You’ve been making decent progress on your key project. To keep up the good work, you should now find where the cracks are, and let them teach you how to proceed from here. AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “We all lead three lives,” said Austrian novelist Thomas Bernhard, “an actual one, an imaginary one, and the one we are not aware of.” I suspect you’ll get big glimpses of your third life in the coming weeks, Aquarius: the one you’re normally not aware of. It might freak you out a bit, maybe unleash a few blasts of laughter and surges of tears. But if you approach these revelations with reverent curiosity, I bet they will be cleansing and catalytic. They are also likely to make you less entranced by your imaginary life and better grounded in your actual life. PISCES. (Feb. 19-March 20) “The greatest

illusion is not religion,” says aphorist Michael Lipsey. “It’s waking up in the morning imagining how much you’re going to get done today.” But even if that’s often true, Pisces, I suspect that you have the power to refute it in the coming weeks. Your ability to accomplish small wonders will be at a peak. Your knack for mastering details and acting with practical acumen may be unprecedented. For the immediate future, then, I predict that you’ll largely be able to get done what you imagine you can get done.
