QUICK TAKE

George Elmer Pataki’s campaign slogan is “People Over Politics.” I have no idea what that means. Do you? If so, would you mind just keeping it to yourself. Thanks.

By Jeff Kramer

BLAND AMBITION: PATAKI FOR PREZ

To look at George Pataki’s poll numbers, mired between zero and 1 percent, it’s hard to imagine the former New York governor stealing the Republican presidential nomination. Until you walk the streets of Syracuse and encounter . . . Pataki Fever? OK, maybe that’s a stretch. But on a Pataki-inspired sojourn that carried me the six-mile breadth of Syracuse — my Walkie for Pataki — I took the pulse of the patient in the heart of the state he once ruled with a tin fist. Conclusion: While the Pataki campaign looks deader than the Syracuse University basketball team’s Final Four dreams, don’t disconnect the oxygen pump yet. My field study wasn’t scientific. I avoided whole neighborhoods because guns scare me. Also, I forgot my flask. Nonetheless, a pattern emerged. Regardless of what the polls show nationally, no presidential candidate boasts lower negatives locally. Asked what she thinks of Pataki, SU freshman Kate Weyante asked a question of her own: “What is it?” Kate soon corrected herself and pulled from the deep recesses of her experience the fact that Pataki is a former governor — a threetermer, no less. But the point still holds: At a time when disgust with politicians has hit pandemic levels, Pataki generates almost none of that hostility.

At the Blarney Stone tavern near the starting point of my odyssey, I asked cook D. Mack what comes to mind when he hears George Pataki’s name. “George Pataki, what comes to mind?” Mack said, sounding like a Wheel of Fortune contestant in need of a vowel. “Not a damn thing.” Responses like those underscore why Pataki vowed last week to stay in the race, despite rumors of an imminent withdrawal. He sounded upbeat, as he should. “I’m in it,” he told Fox News. “I’m not gonna pull a Scott Walker.” And so the question arises: With Syracuse as the flashpoint, could Pataki’s amiable brand of empty suitism propel him to high office — again? One possible road map involves GOP frontrunner Donald Trump finally crossing the line (if there is a line anymore) and

blurting something so offensive that even he has to declare he’s unfit to be president. A comment to the effect of “Here’s my one-word solution for childhood obesity: heroin” or “Why are witches protected from being burned at the stake, yet if you have carnal relations with a circus monkey you go to prison?” could create an opening for a mild-mannered Republican with nothing to say. Make that little to say. Pataki did recently stand tall on an issue that resonates powerfully with everyday Americans. He tweeted that documents leaker Edward Snowden shouldn’t have a Twitter account because he’s a traitor. That prompted a Twitter backlash from Snowden’s supporters, who branded Pataki the traitor. It also led to an awkward accounting: Pataki has 53,000 Twitter followers; Snowden has 963,000. The kerfuffle didn’t hurt him in Syracuse. Outside SS. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Father Vladimir Kantor said of Pataki, “I have heard of him. I guess he was fairly benign.” Near East Genesee and Geddes Streets, I asked Dequan Grover, 24, what he thinks when he hears the name Pataki. “Nothing,” he said. Imagine what Eliot Spitzer would give to have a slate so clean. My route took me west to east. I ambled through downtown, up to campus, to Westcott and finally to the DeWitt border at Nottingham Plaza. In Westcott, I met Mary Moore as she was letting her dog, Jaf, do his business. The mention of Pataki confused her initially. “He was mayor . . . no! He was governor,” she auto-corrected. Moore added that Jaf only walks on pavement and always stays off grass. Coincidentally, some analysts believe that whoever believes Pataki can be president needs to stay off grass as well. Perhaps, but listen to Mike Curry of Central Square, who was running an errand on the West Side when I strolled by. “Hmmm, Governor Pataki,” he mused, as if asked to name the backup shortstop for the 1938 Philadelphia Athletics. Then it came to him: “Talks out of the side of his mouth. Literally and figuratively.” It could be telling that another New Yorker with White House ambitions adopted a similar oratorical strategy, proclaiming, “I cannot talk out of both sides of my mouth.” His name was FDR. BOOM BOOM RELOADS WITH NEW OWNER

The restaurant at 3263 Howlett Hill Road, Camillus, looks the same on the outside. The no-frills dining room, with long tables topped with brightly colored plastic tablecloths and seating for about 80, is the same. The lines out the door morning and night? The same. The food? It’s the same, too — or almost the same. They’re working on that. Welcome back after a brief hiatus, Boom Boom Mex Mex. It’s not easy for a newcomer to take the reins at a beloved restaurant with legions of diehard fans, but new owner Gino Laurenzo is rising to the challenges. “It’s a learning process,’’ Laurenzo says, “but we’re getting great feedback from our customers. Everyone has been very supportive and very appreciative that we’re here. People are giving us the thumbs up and telling us we’re doing a great job.’’ The news earlier this year that Boom Boom owners Tom and Lupe Bryan wouldn’t reopen their popular seasonal eatery in the western suburbs left diners devastated. The Bryans had operated the restaurant since 2005 and prior to that operated a stand at the New York State Fair and gained a following as mobile vendors under the name Boom Boom BBQ. Laurenzo, meanwhile, grew up in the Mexican food business in Houston, and for 15 years has owned and operated Rio Grande Tex Mex Grill in New Hartford. That restaurant is now operated by two of his sons; his wife and another son work with him in Camillus. Laurenzo had never been to Boom Boom, he says, but a customer and friend who frequents both restaurants told him about Boom Boom’s closing and “made the connection’’ to the Bryans. Discussions began and a business deal was reached. “I quickly realized what an institution this place was and what a responsibility I have to the community,’’ Laurenzo says. Laurenzo spent several weeks in the kitchen with Lupe Bryan, cooking with her, learning her recipes, and getting a knack for her spices, seasonings and techniques. “Everything is homemade,

from scratch,’’ Laurenzo says. “It’s almost a feel thing. It’s hard to explain. You have to feel it out to get it right.’’ The new Boom Boom opened on Sept. 16 — Mexican Independence Day — and diners have been flocking to it ever since. The menu and approach to serving is essentially the same: Tacos, burritos, quesadillas, taco salads, Mexican combination platters and more are built to order, cafeteria-style, at a long counter.

“Everybody has their favorites,’’ Laurenzo says. Best-selling items so far, he says, are the chipotle chicken (grilled diced chicken breast in a mild-medium heat chipotle sauce) and the pork al pastor (diced grilled pork in a deep brown chile sauce, seasoned with cumin and cloves, with a hint of sweetness from pineapple). For dessert, there’s several kinds of flan and specialties like tres leches cake. Laurenzo plans to extend the season a bit, staying open until mid-December and reopening in mid-March “if it’s not zero degrees with six feet of snow.’’ For now, the restaurant opens at 11 a.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and at noon Saturdays and Sundays. Closing time is somewhere between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. “If you’re here and you’re in line,’’ Laurenzo says, “you’ll get served.’’ For more information, call 673-1151 or visit facebook.com/ Boom-Boom-Mex-Mex-104951179548776. SU DRAMA SHAKES UP CLASSIC COLE

The Syracuse University Drama Department puts its best foot forward with the season opener of Kiss Me Kate. Make that more than three dozen feet, since this hoofers’ hoedown is keyed to the evergreen sophistication of Cole Porter’s compositions. Porter’s Broadway smash offers a serendipitous merging of class and crass. In the clever book by Sam and Bella Spewack, producer, director and actor Fred Graham (played by Ezekiel Edmonds) attempts to mount The Taming of the Shrew: The Musical, a revision of the Shakespeare farce, during a 1948 Baltimore tryout. But he needs star power to pull it off, specifically his ex-wife Lilli Vanessa (Jodi Snyder), a Hollywood drama queen with the same amount of egotistical overkill as Fred. The battle of the sexes escalates as Fred dallies with ingenue Lois Lane (Charity Van Tassel), while Lois’ actor-boyfriend Bill Calhoun (Brian Sandstrom) has a gambling jones that results in a visit from a pair of amiable thugs (Adam Segrave and Richard Westfahl) who attempt to collect a $10,000 IOU. Art imitates life as the offstage drama spills onto the onstage performances of Shrew, especially in the snarky confrontations between Fred’s S Y R A C U S E

Petruchio and Lilli’s Katherine. As everyone in the audience knows, however, these divas are made for each other. Despite the show’s 2 ½ -hour length, director David Lowenstein never allows the pace to flag, as he expertly seesaws between Kate’s modern-day mayhem and the Shrew scenes. Costume designer Meggan Camp likewise performs double duty, with her creations of Shrew’s eye-filling, Bard-era togs and the stylish late-1940s apparel worn backstage by the Kate players. Kiss Me Kate has plenty of breathing room amid the larger confines of Syracuse Stage’s Archbold Theater, which comes in handy for the intricate dance steps orchestrated by choreographer Andrea Leigh-Smith, while music director Brian Cimmet is in charge of the orchestra pit of 10 musicians. Just about every Porter tune turns out to be a showstopper, with both acts

opening with high-powered dance numbers. Kelsey Brodeur is a brassy delight as she leads the cast for “Another Op’nin, Another Show,” and the second act kicks off with Jon Paul Roby and company getting sultry for “Too Darn Hot.” Adam Segrave and Richard Westfahl as the scene-stealing gangsters (introduced by Fred as “promising graduates of the Group Theatre,” which must have brought the house down in 1948) maximize the naughtiness of Porter’s lyrics in “Brush Up Your Shakespeare,” including, “If she says your behavior is heinous/ Kick her right in the Coriolanus.” And while romantic leads Ezekiel Edmonds and Jodi Snyder ably supply the rambunctious emotional center, the supporting lovebirds played by Charity Van Tassel and Brian Sandstrom add to the splashy merriment. BIRTHDAY BEATLEMANIA WITH MARK HUDSON

The influence of John Lennon and the messages he shared, including “all you need is love” and “give peace a chance,” still ring in ears around the globe. On Friday, Oct. 9, the world will remember the late John Lennon on what would have been his 75th birthday. The Beatle’s life will also be celebrated during an 8 p.m. performance by Mark Hudson at the Mohegan Manor Ballroom, 58 Oswego St., Baldwinsville. The evening will feature Hudson’s “Livin’ on the Edge” one-man show, with proceeds benefiting the JDRF/Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Hudson is a type 2 diabetic, so the cause rings close to home. The date also marks 22 years of sobriety for the musician. Hudson returns to Central New York after headlining last February’s BeatleCuse show. His music credits include writing the Grammy-winning song “Livin’ on the Edge” for Aerosmith, co-writing “The Reason” with Carole King for Celine Dion, and working with acts from Ozzy Osbourne to Hanson. Hudson’s show will bring the audience into his world as he shares stories, anecdotes and impersonations from his wild life. “It’s an interesting thing: When you’re in the life, you don’t really know what it is,” says Hudson, 64. “You’re too busy living it. Then if you can make it long enough, you look back and think, ‘Oh my God.’ And I’m still doing what I wanted to do since I was 13. I should be pissed off and wanting to retire, but instead I’m still with a guitar or piano. How can that not be happiness?” Hudson got his first taste of rock’n’roll when his mother saved up enough money and brought him to see The Beatles as a kid. “When I saw that, I went, ‘I don’t know what that is, but I want some of it,’” he remembers. “Then I became obsessed with everything they did. They started influencing my songwriting, but even more than the music, it was the way they looked, the way they thought about peace and love. It was bigger than the music and their music was bigger than anything.”

Mark Hudson.

That influence has carried its way through Hudson’s life. He recalls listening to “Livin’ on the Edge” with Aerosmith for the first time, especially Steven Tyler’s reaction. “His eyes were wide open, almost with tears,” Hudson says. “He said, ‘Lennon’s in the room.’ There was an energy given to me by loving The Beatles.” But Hudson did more than love the band. As the years went on, he produced eight albums for Ringo Starr, worked with George Harrison and Paul McCartney and became friends with John Lennon. “When I was singing with Paul and Ringo, it hit me like a wrecking ball,” he says. “I thought, ‘OK, I can get hit by a bus. I got to work with these guys.’ So now it’s like I want to pass that onto the new generation. Music transcends every decade.” Hudson got to know Lennon well during “The Lost Weekend” that actually lasted from summer 1973 to early 1975. Lennon’s marriage with Yoko Ono was on the rocks, so he spent 18 months with their assistant, May Pang, in New York City and Los Angeles. In that time, Lennon completed three albums and produced records for Ringo Starr and Harry Nilsson.

“I didn’t ask Beatles questions or he’d slug me,” Hudson says. “But he did say, ‘Always tell the truth,’ and I didn’t know what that meant at first. But if you tell the truth, you never have to remember what you said. I applied it to my songwriting. He also said, ‘Don’t be afraid of metaphors.’ He was always writing that way. Writing is so much easier if you’re telling the truth. Songs just melt out of you.” Hudson’s daughter, Sarah, also has the songwriting gene: She co-wrote “Dark Horse” for Katy Perry. “My daughter did it all on her own,” he says. “I never opened a gate. If she asked a question, I had an answer. Sometimes she listened and sometimes she didn’t. That’s what makes me proud. After that song (“Dark Horse”), I wrote her an email saying, ‘Keep writing hits because I’ll be in diapers and need a place to live.’” Until then, Hudson doesn’t plan on hanging up the guitar any time soon. “I keep doing this because it’s all I’m good at,” he says. “I’m good at kissing and it’s downhill after that. All the other human things, I’m dysfunctional. I’m bad at math. But singing, writing . . . don’t fuck with the king. I know I’m great at that. Outside of that though, just pathetic. But I’m happy with it.” SNT

Advice from the Artist

“To thine own self be true.’ Be who and what you are. It might take a while for someone to get you, but when they get you, they’ll get you big. Apply that to your songwriting. When I’d been doing it for five years and was 20 years old, I was cocky and thought I deserved a Grammy. Didn’t get it. When I was 30 years old, I was pissed off, but refused to give up. When I was 40, there was ‘Livin’ on the Edge’ and boom, there it is. You can never give up. Try to listen to your own heart and learn from everybody. Learn something every day. You need an ego, but it can’t be detrimental. And when you write, remember: The song is first. The singer is second. The band is third. The song is always first.” syracusenewtimes.com | 10.07.15 - 10.13.15

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) If I warned you not to trust anyone, I hope you would reject my simplistic fear-mongering. If I suggested that you trust everyone unconditionally, I hope you would dismiss my delusional naivete. But it’s important to acknowledge that the smart approach is far more difficult than those two extremes. You’ve got to evaluate each person and even each situation on a case-by-case basis. There may be unpredictable folks who are trustworthy some of the time, but not always. Can you be both affably open-hearted and slyly discerning? It’s especially important that you do so in the next 16 days. TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) As I meditat-

ed on your astrological aspects, I had an intuition that I should go to a gem fair I’d heard about. It was at an event center near my home. When I arrived, I was dazzled to find a vast spread of minerals, fossils, gemstones and beads. Within a few minutes, two stones had commanded my attention, as if they’d reached out to me telepathically: chrysoprase, a green gemstone, and petrified wood, a mineralized fossil streaked with earth tones. The explanatory note next to the chrysoprase said that if you keep this gem close to you, it “helps make conscious what has been unconscious.” Ownership of the petrified wood was described as conferring “the power to remove obstacles.” I knew these were the exact oracles you needed. I bought both stones, took them home, and put them on an altar dedicated to your success in the coming weeks.

GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) George R.R.

Martin has written a series of fantasy novels collectively called A Song of Ice and Fire. They have sold 60 million copies and been adapted for the HBO series Game of Thrones. Martin says the inspiration for his master work originated with the pet turtles he owned as a kid. The creatures lived in a toy castle in his bedroom, and he pretended they were knights and kings and other royal characters. “I made up stories about how they killed each other and betrayed each other and fought for the kingdom,” he has testified. I think the next seven months will be a perfect time for you to make a comparable leap, Gemini. What’s your version of Martin’s turtles? And what valuable asset can you turn it into?

CANCER. (June 21-July 22) The editors

of the Urban Dictionary provide a unique definition of the word “outside.” They say it’s a vast, uncomfortable place that surrounds your home. It has no ceiling or walls or carpets, and contains annoying insects and random loud noises. There’s a big yellow ball in the sky that’s always moving around

and changing the temperature in inconvenient ways. Even worse, the “outside” is filled with strange people that are constantly doing deranged and confusing things. Does this description match your current sense of what “outside” means, Cancerian? If so, that’s OK. For now, enjoy the hell out of being inside.

LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) We all go through phases when we are tempted to believe in the factuality of every hostile, judgmental and random thought that our monkey mind generates. I am not predicting that this is such a time for you. But I do want to ask you to be extra-skeptical toward your monkey mind’s fabrications. Right now it’s especially important that you think as coolly and objectively as possible. You can’t afford to be duped by anyone’s crazy talk, including your own. Be extra-vigilant in your quest for the raw truth. VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Do you know about the ancient Greek general Pyrrhus? At the Battle of Asculum in 279 B.C.E., his army technically defeated Roman forces, but his casualties were so substantial that he ultimately lost the war. You can and you must avoid a comparable scenario. Fighting for your cause is good only if it doesn’t wreak turmoil and bewilderment. If you want to avoid an outcome in which both sides lose, you’ve got to engineer a result in which both sides win. Be a cagey compromiser. LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) If I could give

you a birthday present, it would be a map to your future treasure. Do you know which treasure I’m referring to? Think about it as you fall asleep on the next eight nights. I’m sorry I can’t simply provide you with the instructions you’d need to locate it. The cosmic powers tell me you have not yet earned that right. The second-best gift I can offer, then, will be clues about how to earn it. Clue 1. Meditate on the differences between what your ego wants and what your soul needs. Clue 2. Ask yourself, “What is the most unripe part of me?”, and then devise a plan to ripen it. Clue 3. Invite your deep mind to give you insights you haven’t been brave enough to work with until now. Clue 4. Take one medium-sized bold action every day.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Galway Kinnell’s poem “Middle of the Way” is about his solo trek through the snow on Oregon’s Mount Gauldy. As he wanders in the wilderness, he remembers an important truth about himself: “I love the day, the sun . . . But I know (that) half my life belongs to the wild darkness.” According to my reading of the astrological omens, Scorpio, now is a good time for you, too, to refresh your awe and

reverence for the wild darkness -- and to recall that half your life belongs to it. Doing so will bring you another experience Kinnell describes: “an inexplicable sense of joy, as if some happy news had been transmitted to me directly, bypassing the brain.”

SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) The

last time I walked into a McDonald’s and ordered a meal was 1984. Nothing that the restaurant chain serves up is appealing to my taste or morality. I do admire its adaptability, however. In cow-loving India, McDonald’s only serves vegetarian fare that includes deep-fried cheese and potato patties. In Israel, kosher McFalafels are available. Mexicans order their McMuffins with refried beans and pico de gallo. At a McDonald’s in Singapore, you can order McRice burgers. This is the type of approach I advise for you right now, Sagittarius. Adjust your offerings for your audience.

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have

been flirting with your “alone at the top” reveries. I won’t be surprised if one night you have a dream of riding on a Ferris wheel that malfunctions, leaving you stranded at the highest point. What’s going on? Here’s what I suspect: In one sense you are zesty and far-seeing. Your competence and confidence are waxing. At the same time, you may be out of touch with what’s going on at ground level. Your connection to the depths is not as intimate as your relationship with the heights. The moral of the story might be to get in closer contact with your roots. Or be more attentive to your support system. Or buy new shoes and underwear.

AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) I haven’t planted a garden for years. My workload is too intense to devote enough time to that pleasure. So eight weeks ago I was surprised when a renegade sunflower began blooming in the dirt next to my porch. How did the seed get there? Via the wind? A passing bird that dropped a potential meal? The gorgeous interloper eventually grew to a height of four feet and produced a boisterous yellow flower head. Every day I muttered a prayer of thanks for its guerrilla blessing. I predict a comparable phenomenon for you in the coming days, Aquarius. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) The coming days will be a favorable time to dig up what has been buried. You can, if you choose, discover hidden agendas, expose deceptions, see beneath the masks, and dissolve delusions. But it’s my duty to ask you this: Is that really something you want to do? It would be fun and sexy to liberate so much trapped emotion and suppressed energy, but it could also stir up a mind-bending ruckus that propels you on a healing quest. I hope you decide to go for the gusto, but I’ll understand if you prefer to play it safe.
