STRING SENSATION SPURS COMMUNITY COLLABORATION

In a career that spans more than five decades, renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman has performed with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras, including one right here in Central New York. Perlman last performed locally in 2004 as a soloist with the now-defunct Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Another Perlman visit seemed unlikely following the SSO’s bankruptcy in 2011, but a new orchestra, named Symphoria, rose from the ashes, thanks to several SSO musicians who worked to create a more sustainable company. The young orchestra, now in its third season, is developing strategies to cultivate a regular audience. One concept includes Perlman’s return to the Salt City on Sunday, Nov. 1, 3 p.m., at the Mulroy Civic Center’s Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater. The Israeli violinist will perform Beethoven’s “Violin Concerto” with Symphoria as part of Temple Concord’s Regina F. Goldenberg Cultural Series. “It definitely puts the orchestra on a national stage,” said Lawrence Loh, Symphoria’s music director. “We expect that this will not just be people from Central New York, but that it’s going to draw a much wider audience because it’s such a rare opportunity to see Itzhak Perlman.”

Itzhak Perlman. Lisa-Marie Mazzucco photo

Born in 1945, Perlman studied at New York City’s Juilliard School, where he now teaches. In 2001, he performed with pianist Rohan de Silva at the Civic Center for the inaugural concert of the annual Goldenberg concert series, which features a variety of professional musicians and other guest artists. Series coordinator Vicki Feldman said that Temple Concord is funding both Perlman’s and Symphoria’s artist fees, and that Symphoria’s musicians often perform for the Goldenberg concerts, which usually take place at the temple. “We wanted our musicians to have the opportunity to play with (Perlman),” she said. “It would be great for the orchestra because they’re only in their third season.” Symphoria managing director Catherine Underhill said that partnerships with local businesses are essential to developing and sustaining the community’s appreciation for classical music. Perlman’s upcoming concert provides a “particular impetus for building those relationships.”

During the violinist’s visit, four local hotels, including the Jefferson Clinton and the Genesee Grande, are offering weekend packages to concertgoers. Two restaurants, Phoebe’s and Pastabilities, are offering discounts to patrons with concert tickets. “Once we increase our visibility, people will understand what a rich cultural opportunity Symphoria provides through its programming and community partnerships,” Underhill said. With close to 1,500 subscribers, the orchestra’s operating budget is $1.8 million and climbing, which is about one-third of the SSO’s budget before the company’s bankruptcy. The musicians, consisting of 50 core members with additional performers hired on an ad hoc basis, earn roughly 30 percent of what the SSO musicians earned as they now perform fewer concerts per season. Symphoria operates with a staff of seven compared to the former orchestra’s staff of 17, and Symphoria’s board members number 11 instead of the SSO’s more than 40. “We need to keep in mind that we’re not trying to resuscitate the former institution,” Underhill noted, “but rather create the orchestra best suited to serve our community and region.” Rachelle Schlosser is the director of media relations for the League of American Orchestras, based in New York City. The organization is dedicated to preserving and enhancing orchestras’ cultural presence on a national level. She said that Symphoria’s concerts help local businesses in a symbiotic manner. “People that come to hear these organizations wind up spending their dollars locally, and it’s a really great way of feeding local businesses,” Schlosser said. “As you’re going out into the community and partnering with these smaller organizations, you’re attracting more people into the concert hall. It’s a win-win.” According to Underhill, the Perlman concert had nearly sold out a month in advance. Loh said that this is a good sign. “We’re creative about our programming. We don’t just program ordinary concerts, and I think that’s another way to build trust,” he said. “We hope that the audience will come to trust us enough to make artistic decisions that will interest them in ways that maybe they didn’t expect.” SNT

QUICK TAKE

If you’re a Syracuse University season-ticket holder and would like to join the ’Cuse Fan Council, visit Cuse.com for more details.

By Matt Michael

PITT WIN MUDDIES SU’S BOWL HOPES

Last week, the Syracuse University athletic department announced that it’s creating a ’Cuse Fan Council comprised of season-ticket holders who will weigh in on “topics that directly relate to the fan experience, ticket sales and other subjects relating to our intercollegiate athletic events.” While the council members will discuss all sports, it’s likely they’ll zero in on football as attendance for home games at the Carrier Dome continues to plummet. The Atlantic Coast Conference game on Saturday, Oct. 24, against Pittsburgh — a top-25 team and former Big East Conference rival on homecoming weekend — attracted only 29,832 fans. That’s the third under-30,000 crowd in five home games this season. Before this year, the Orange hadn’t had an announced crowd of less than 30,000 at the Carrier Dome since 2008 during the ill-fated Greg Robinson era. It’s refreshing to see that SU is soliciting fans’ opinions and it’ll help when they’re talking about things such as parking, concession prices and Kiss Cams. But in the end, there’s only one idea that’s really going to fill up the seats: winning football games. Against No. 25 Pitt, the Orange couldn’t hold a 17-13 halftime lead and lost 23-20 on a 25-yard field goal as the clock expired. It was SU’s fourth consecutive loss after the Orange’s first 3-0 start since 1991. And now the Orange is getting into the meat of its schedule with road games at No. 15 Florida State and Louisville, and the next home game against No. 6 Clemson on Nov. 14. To become eligible for a bowl game, the Orange will have to win one of those three games and beat North Carolina State and Boston College in its final two games. “It really is just tough, the last four weeks,” said sophomore linebacker Zaire Franklin, who had a monster game against Pitt with 11 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble. “Being in position to win a game, but not being able to find that play. I feel like we’re close. The game is always there. The game is always in reach. We just have to learn to win these types of games.”

Freshman running back Jordan Fredericks ran for 91 yards in Syracuse’s loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday. Michael Davis photo

Win them, and the fans will come. It’s really that simple, and the proof is right in our own backyard. Remember when the LSU football team came to town last month with 8,000 fans who promised to drink our town dry? We made a big deal out of those fans traveling 1,200 miles and spending three days in Syracuse tailgating like it’s 1999. But imagine what most college basketball fans around the country think of us. We draw 20,000 for the worst teams, and fill seats 1 ½ miles away from the court for the biggest games. We park a zip code away, walk uphill in snow and ice, and brave frigid temperatures to watch a two-hour basketball game. Because of Orange fans, SU games at Madison Square Garden are like home games. Georgetown even stopped selling individual game tickets for the SU game in 2011 because it irked alumni to have so many Orange fans in the arena. The reason LSU football fans and SU basketball fans are so rabid is because we all prefer to be associated with a winner. (Duh!) If LSU hadn’t won national championships in 2003 and 2007, perhaps their fans wouldn’t have been so eager to travel to Syracuse. And if the Orange basketball team wasn’t a perennial powerhouse with its own national title in 2003 and a realistic opportunity to win one just about every year, Georgetown wouldn’t have had to come up with its ticket-rigging scheme. So, that said, let’s get back to Orange football. There is hope. Most of SU’s starters are underclassmen, and true freshmen like quarterback Eric Dungey and running back Jordan Fredericks have accounted for the majority of the team’s total offense. On the defensive side, more than half of the starters this year have been freshmen or sophomores.

“They’re learning so much, so many of them are playing substantial time in college football for the first time,” SU coach Scott Shafer said. “There’s so many great learning opportunities. You have to try to accentuate the positives, work on the things that weren’t good enough and keep a level head about you as you move forward.” Shafer recruited all of those young players after inheriting the job from former coach Doug Marrone, who left his “dream job” at SU for the NFL. New athletic director Mark Coyle will have to determine if he believes that Shafer and his staff can mold that talent into a team that’s capable of becoming a consistent winner. Win consistently and the fans will start to come. And by win consistently, that means beating teams other than Villanova, Rhode Island, Wake Forest and Central Michigan — the four teams that have provided SU with its six wins the last two seasons. “I can see if we were losing every game by two touchdowns. It’s not like we’re being outplayed and we’re not talented,” Franklin said. “We just have to be able to find that play when we need it the most. We just have to keep pushing, in practice, in the way we train and prepare. Just be able to get that one play that decides between winner and loser.” SNT

LOCAL FOODS FIND A HOME ON ASTER MENU

Neil Miller was excited about dining at Armory Square newcomer Aster Pantry & Parlor before it even opened its doors in September — with good reason. Miller operates the Farmshed Harvest Food Hub, a network of organic family farms with a warehouse and distribution near downtown Syracuse. On opening night at Aster, he enjoyed a series of small plates, including an appetizer of leeks, grapes and blue cheese, spotlighting leeks sourced from Farmshed. On a return visit, he had honeynut squash soup with a creamy goat cheese garnish, featuring squash from Farmshed partner-grower Jamie Edelstein, of Wyllie Fox Farm in Cato. Most exciting of all, Miller says, is seeing Farmshed and several of its growers featured prominently on the homepage of the Aster Pantry & Parlor website. “That is the coolest thing ever,’’ Miller said on Farmshed’s Facebook page. He calls Aster’s local and regional focus “groundbreaking,’’ and looks forward to an ongoing relationship with the restaurant. “They’re committed to using the best ingredients they can get,’’ Miller says, “and that means local and organic.’’ Jonathan Gregory, vice president of operations, says Aster and its seasonal menus focus on home — or close to home — and are dependent on fresh, organic produce from Farmshed and other growers. Gregory estimates that 85 percent of the food on the menu is locally sourced. That number is likely to drop in the winter, he says, and grow again in the spring and summer, as the restaurant adds to its list of farmers and purveyors. Gregory says the restaurant owners have a vision for a restaurant and menu that blends city sophistication and the rural landscape that is so central to Central New York — and just a 15-minute drive from downtown.

Aster Pantry & Parlor. Michael Davis photo

Aster’s opening menu features a mix of comforting and familiar dishes: entrees like organic brick chicken with broccoli rabe, salsa verde and roasted garlic potatoes; a sausage dish with Utica-style greens; and “lamb neckties,’’ with house-made bowtie pasta, confit lamb neck, tomato and aged goat cheese. There’s grass-fed steak if you want steak, as well as fish and seafood and a creamery plate with a changing selection of regional cheeses. What’s a vegetarian going to find? Tomato escabeche with quinoa, plum and basil and Farmer Ground polenta cakes, with silken tofu, succotash and onion jam, among other things. Aster Pantry & Parlor opened in September, with executive chef Damien DiPietro at the helm. DiPietro, who has worked with top chefs in markets such as New York City and Philadelphia, created the menu for Aster’s opening. The restaurant recently welcomed new culinary director Scott Riesenberger, who has been at work developing Aster’s late fall-winter dinner menu, as well as lunch and brunch menus. Riesenberger trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and has worked at several Manhattan restaurants, including Bouley, Alain Ducasse at the Essex House, Gilt and others. “He is excited to kick our menu up a notch and work even more closely with Farmshed and our local sources,’’ Gregory says. The menu isn’t the only change in the Walton Street spot that once housed Small Plates Detroit and PJ Dorsey’s. The space has undergone a transformation from floor to ceiling to give the

cavernous room a warm glow and a more intimate feel, brightened by the greenery of real plants. Reclaimed wood tables, hand-crafted less than a mile away at CabFab, are set simply with linen napkins, flatware and wine glasses. The Victorian parlor, a small room to the right, near the bar, is outfitted with furnishings and artwork acquired in the area. It’s a cozy nook to enjoy a glass of wine or craft cocktail and an appetizer, or a cup of coffee and dessert. Aster Pantry & Parlor is owned by partners Todd Wenzel and Patrick Danial. The parent company, RainDog Hospitality, also owns and operates Small Plates Detroit in Detroit. Gregory was brought on board to give the restaurant a new identity. He grew up in the Albany area and has managed a host of restaurants for the Starr Restaurant Group in Philadelphia. Aster Pantry & Parlor, 116 Walton St., is open for dinner on Mondays through Thursdays, 5 to 10 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 5 to 11 p.m.; and Sundays, 5 to 9 p.m. Lunch service on Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., begins this week, as will daily afternoon teas from 4 to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays in the parlor. STEVE MARTIN’S BRIEFS ENCOUNTER

K

een audience members really do have some idea of what to expect when entering The Underpants at Syracuse Stage, even though many people have never heard of it. Steve Martin’s farce ran in New York City for only a month 12 years ago and has appeared fleetingly at colleges and regional theaters in the interim.

REVIEW

The known quantity is director Bill Fennelly, currently our town’s most-loved director, having just won his second Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) Award for last year’s Hairspray. The show is nearly two hours without intermission but feels half as long. The other known quantity is playwright Steve Martin, once the self-styled wild and crazy guy, revealed in later years as a closet intellectual. His best-known stage hit, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, is really about the launch of modernism. So what was Martin looking for when he plucked from obscurity a rarely produced German farce from 1911 titled Die Hose by Carl Sternheim? Before the action of the play a minor bureaucrat’s innocent wife, Louise Maske (Marianna McClellan), dropped her drawers beneath her long skirts while craning her neck to see the king (never called “kaiser”) at a parade in the industrial city of Dusseldorf. Cole Porter might have told us that, “In olden days a glimpse of stocking/ Was looked on as something

10.28.15 - 11.03.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

shocking,” but during pre-World War I Imperial Germany he didn’t know the half of it. German-speaking Middle Europe in the first decade of the last century was the cauldron that produced modern psychology. Literary evidence from the time implies it was also an epoch of vise-like repression. Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening, written a few years earlier, deals with many of the same issues with a heavy hand; Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik turned it into a hit rock opera eight years ago. Wedekind, not coincidentally, was the third fatherin-law of Carl Sternheim, a playwright who thought himself an heir to Moliere and has been compared to Noel Coward. Yet his clear affinity is with Georges Feydeau. He needs only three doors, not five. Fennelly stages the action as a stylized ballet running at double speed. Martin and Sternheim’s lines draw sparks from the get-go, but what you see resembles a silent comedy, as if Mack Sennett had somehow been tutored in modern dance. We immediately grasp the power relationship between

mincing Louise and her towering husband Theo Maske (Mark David Watson), even without the lines. Theo fears that the scandal of her falling undies might threaten his lowly position. In the Katzenjammer-kid accent that all but one character uses, Theo laments, “I can’t believe this is happening to me.” A slave to convention, he proclaims, “If everyone just did their duty and nothing else, the world would be a better place.” While the knickers were indeed reported in the press, the response is quite different from what Theo foresaw. Four curious men come knocking at the door, seeking to rent a room. The Maske apartment is a rather grim place, not unlike Ralph and Alice Kramden’s digs in the Bronx. (Scenic designer William Bloodgood favors gray on slate.) The Maskes need the extra income. Prospective tenants might be looking for bargains, but they quickly let on that they are more driven by lust, to get closer to the bloomers dropper. Gertrude Deuter (Sabrina Profitt), an unmarried tenant and confidante of Louise, is quicker to see the erotic possibilities of having a man in the house while her husband is away at the office. An Agnes Moorehead-like soubrette, Profitt’s Gertrude is the most overtly sexual — or, in Martin’s view, liberated — character in the action. Neither of the two tenants who can be named deliver on her promise. One is a vaguely Italianate, flamboyant, unpublished poet named Versati (Daniel Passer), who is largely talk without delivery. The other is a dark-clad barber named Benjamin Cohen (Michael Brian Dunn), who has to walk a half-hour from his shop. Sternheim, an assimilated Jew himself, is pushing the envelope for contemporary audiences, but anti-Semitism was a smaller beast in 1911. Given The Underpants’ less than lustrous production history, Bill Fennelly’s hand is very likely the best that has ever guided it. SNT

“A gloriously messy shipwreck of a play.” Those are director Matt Chiorini’s words to describe William Shakespeare’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre, an ironic defense for the Boot and Buskin Theatre Club’s season opener at Le Moyne College, which runs through Saturday, Oct. 31. If you have never heard of Pericles before, don’t chide yourself for negligence. There remains some question just how much of it Shakespeare actually wrote, and if he did, the poetry ranks toward the bottom of the canon. Pericles was actually a box-office hit in its day, albeit for all the wrong reasons, grumped Ben Jonson, Shakespeare’s contemporary and rival. The historical Pericles was a statesman of Athens, not a prince of Tyre, in what is now Lebanon. So right off Shakespeare doesn’t know the geography or history of the places he’s depicting; he’s more in the realm of romance or folklore. That’s why a narrator named Gower (Noelle Killius), a contemporary of Chaucer, must guide us through these exotic places and the anfractuous story line. Gower uses a light pen to write the names of the places we’re visiting, like Pentapolis, Tarsus and Myteline. We see strangely familiar artifacts upon our arrival, like the chandeliers and wigs of Versailles or the garish neon of Las Vegas. Everyman-like Pericles (Drew Gripe) is confronted with a deadly riddle by the autocratic king of Antioch (Orlando Ocam-

po). If he can’t guess, Pericles dies. But once he realizes the answer reveals a dirty family secret, he can’t answer that, either. Instead, he stalls, promising an answer in 40 days, and flees back to Tyre. Knowing he is not safe, Pericles sets up his pal Helicanus (Fred Pienkoski) as regent, then commences his picaresque voyage around the Mediterranean. As a reluctant contestant in a tournament in Pentapolis, he wins the hand of the king’s daughter Thaisa (Jade Miori), who conveniently falls in love with him. Aboard the ship sailing back to Tyre, the young couple endures a savage storm, this production’s most dazzling scene. Thaisa gives birth to a daughter, Marina (Carrie Bates); because she is presumed to have died in childbirth, Thaisa is thrown overboard by the sailors. While shipwreck survivors often do well in Shakespeare, even Hollywood’s golden age could not have contrived a more unlikely or happier finale. Chiorini always had a hankering for Pericles, and his collaboration with ace set designer Karel Blakeley, as well as costumer Lindsey Quay Sikes-Voorhees and a large cast of students in multiple roles, provides the means of solving the impossible. Along with the hugely entertaining spectacle, Chiorini pulls showstopping turns from a dozen players; Brittany Fayle as Dionyza, queen of Tarsus, and Carrie Bates as Marina command the scenes in which they appear. SALT SHAKERS Local players embrace Syracuse New Times theater awards By James MacKillop and Bill DeLapp

C

hange was in the air at this year’s Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) Awards. A wholly new SALT Academy roster of voters, excluding anyone with New Times affiliation, commenced last year, when the “season” was redefined as September to August instead of January to December. New categories were introduced this year, such as separate competitions for sound and lighting designers in both talk-talk plays and in musicals. The shrinking of other categories, meanwhile, perhaps a means of speeding up the awards ceremony, has severely pinched longtime contenders. The splendid summer companies at Auburn’s Merry-GoRound Playhouse, Cortland Repertory Theatre and Ithaca’s Hangar and Kitchen theaters, now in the general “professional” slot, must feel they are like the undercard Republican debate candidates when the Academy smiles on the hometown favorites at the Redhouse and Syracuse Stage. Although the same Academy voters rank both professional and community companies, their behavior differs wildly from one group to the other. Professional winners were mostly favorites, like last December’s Hairspray, which deserves the laurels. But the co-production of the Syracuse University Drama Department and Syracuse

Stage enjoys an extended run and usually does the best box office of any show of the year. This makes all the more remarkable Cortland Repertory’s three wins, especially Wendi R. Zea’s costumes in 1776. The Redhouse was cited for Broadway Bound, including Laura Austin (Best Actress), Anthony Malchar (Best Actor) and Steven Svoboda (Best Director), yet Neil Simon’s autobiographical comedy was one of the company’s least characteristic works. Perhaps the Academy was so fixed on Austin as a heartbreaking madwoman or a doomed aesthete, it was bowled over to see her as a put-upon lower-middle-class housewife. Svoboda’s finest moment of the year was his Oscar Wilde tribute in February, especially A Man of No Importance, the most affecting new musical seen on the Syracuse New Times beat last season.

PROFESSIONAL THEATER COMPANIES

A signal failure in the professional category is the total neglect of the Ithaca companies, always of interest to Syracuse New Times readers. Kitchen Theatre Company, the most innovative in the area, was a SALT winner from the first. Did no one see Spring Awakening at the Hangar? Its artistic standards are second to none. With community companies, on the other hand, the Academy was diligent and searching. Who could have predicted Justin Polly for Best Actor in RFK at Appleseed Productions? “Little-seen” does not do it. RFK was originally half of a double bill before the other half vanished. Then opening-weekend performances were canceled because of an illness in the crew one night, and snow the next. It was a good season for Central New York Playhouse, Shoppingtown’s most vibrant tenant, with key wins for The Laramie Project. Yet it was a boom year for Baldwinsville Theatre Guild. The Academy gave overdue praise to Kathy Egloff, the hardest-working person on local stages, for Frau Blucher in Young Frankenstein and the Igor of Josh Taylor, who also won for Best Set Designer on that show, plus Best Non-Performer for his offstage contributions for Jekyll & Hyde, which he graciously shared with Michelle Luzzi. This was the last competition for the Covey Theatre Company, previously a SALT champ. Garrett Heater won for Best Director for Hair, Aubry Ludington Panek for Best Supporting Actress in God of Carnage, and co-founder Susan Blumer was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. And for sentiment, nothing could top the almost-invisible Salt City Center for the Performing Arts’ revival at Central New York Playhouse’s Shoppingtown space, with a Best Actress award for Nora O’Dea in Doubt. The 11th annual SALT Awards show, held Sunday, Oct. 25, at Syracuse Stage’s Archbold Theater, lured a wild and rowdy crowd of nearly 300, and they weren’t in the mood for polite golf clapping, either. Many were in party-hearty mode, as the event sometimes felt like what would happen if the Tony Awards were being handed out during a tractor pull. Maintaining their dignity throughout, co-hosts Rita Worlock and Abel Searor kept the show flowing during the early going with gentle sparring amid the ad-libs. The Professional Theater prizes were doled out in quick fashion, with production numbers from Covey’s Hair, Salt City Center’s Fiddler on the Roof and Baldwinsville’s Young Frankenstein sprinkled throughout the first hour. Yet the event slowly unraveled during the Non-Professional segment, with the ceremony eventually calling it quits after nearly three hours. This year there wasn’t an overlong Tina Lee acceptance speech that could be used as an easy scapegoat. There were moments that could only be described as unexplainable. National theater impresario Richard Jay-Alexander, the Solvay-bred talent who adorned the Oct. 21 cover of the Syracuse New Times, was on hand via Skype hookup to present the Professional Musical honor. “I wore my jacket for you,” he told the audience from his Miami residence, “but I don’t have my underwear on. Hey, what do you expect: It’s Sunday night.” Yet instead of projecting his face on the screen hanging above the stage, Jay-Alexander’s image was broadcast from the left side

of the stage on a flat-screen TV monitor that maybe measured 30 inches wide, in a segment that came across like a vintage Max Headroom episode. There was also a posthumous tribute to Syracuse theater talents such as Christine Lightcap, Joe Lotito and many others, presented with scrapbook-like images on the screen while Sara Weiler and other singers performed a touching “What I Did For Love” from A Chorus Line. The only problem was that there was no attempt to identify the names of the deceased as the parade of old photos passed by. If you’re going to pay respect, you have to get it right. There were several surprises along the way. Former SALT director Ty Marshal, looking resplendent in a blazing white jacket that might have been filched from Col. Harlan Sanders’ closet, passed the baton to new director Liam Fitzpatrick — but not before Marshal presented a glossary of community theater lingo such as “blocking” and “dropped cues.” Also, Covey director Garrett Heater praised absent winner Aubry Ludington Panek as “an actress with balls”; there was a sing-along for birthday girl Korrie Taylor; much fun was poked about Central New York Playhouse honcho Dustin Czarny’s need to wear sunglasses at SALT affairs (maybe he’s taking a cue from Jack Nicholson’s appearance at the Academy Awards), as Tina Lee warbled a lyric from Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses at Night”; and presenter Anne Fitzgerald lamented, “I started out wearing a strapless bra and I don’t know where it went. Maybe it just gave up.” When Nathan Faudree took the stage to receive his Supporting Actor award for Glengarry Glen Ross, he planted open-mouth smackeroos on both Searor and Fitzgerald, followed by a recollection of his arrival in Syracuse five years earlier as a “bloated alcoholic in rehab” who bounced back with the help of the local theater community. Faudree’s full-on schmecken approach became an instant running gag, as winner Kathy Egloff lip-locked with presenter Simon Moody, then Baldwinsville Theatre Guild’s Sandy Baker demonstrated who really keeps the home fires burning with her amorous attack on her longtime hubby, Mark. Maybe next year’s SALT shindig will include a kissing booth. Like previous SALT ceremonies, there were also moments of poignancy. Justin Polly, whose name rang out several times throughout the evening, frequently thanked his soon-to-be bride, Kasey Mchale, and also saluted the memory of his late brother Christian. Hall of Fame winner Susan Blumer, who was unable to attend, received near-tearful tributes from both Covey co-founder Heater (who affectionately called her “The General”) and her daughter Amy Blumer. And during the Lifetime Achievement honor for the late Earl Colvin, the local gay rights activist as well as founder of Theater A La Carte, the evening’s stage manager, Patricia Catchouny, delivered an eloquent summation: “He was irascible. He was cranky. He was funny. He was Earl.” SNT

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) On a January

morning in 1943, the town of Spearfish, S.D., experienced very weird weather. At 7:30 a.m. the temperature was minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit. In the next two minutes, due to an unusual type of wind sweeping down over nearby Lookout Mountain, thermometers shot up 49 degrees. Over the next hour and a half, the air grew even warmer. But by 9:30 a.m., the temperature had plummeted back to minus 4 degrees. I’m wondering if your moods might swing with this much bounce in the coming weeks. As long as you keep in mind that no single feeling is likely to last very long, it doesn’t have to be a problem. You may even find a way to enjoy the breathtaking ebbs and flows. Halloween costume suggestion: roller coaster rider, Jekyll and Hyde, warm clothes on one side of your body and shorts or bathing suit on the other.

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) How dare you be

so magnetic and tempting? What were you thinking when you turned up the intensity of your charm to such a high level? I suggest you consider exercising more caution about expressing your radiance. People may have other things to do besides daydreaming about you. But if you really can’t bring yourself to be a little less attractive -- if you absolutely refuse to tone yourself down -- please at least try to be extra kind and generous. Share your emotional wealth. Overflow with more than your usual allotments of blessings. Halloween costume suggestion: a shamanic Santa Claus; a witchy Easter Bunny.

GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) In the last 10 days

of November and the month of December, I suspect there will be wild-card interludes when you can enjoy smart gambles, daring stunts, cute tricks and mythic escapades. But the next three weeks will not be like that. On the contrary. For the immediate future, I think you should be an upstanding citizen, a well-behaved helper and a dutiful truth-teller. Can you handle that? If so, I bet you will get sneak peaks of the fun and productive mischief that could be yours in the last six weeks of 2015. Halloween costume suggestion: the most normal person in the world.

CANCER. (June 21-July 22) Members of the gazelle species known as the springbok periodically engage in a behavior known as pronking. They leap into the air and propel themselves a great distance with all four feet off the ground, bounding around with abandon. What evolutionary purpose does this serve? Some scientists are puzzled, but not naturalist David Attenborough. In the documentary film Africa, he follows a springbok herd as it wanders through the desert for months, hoping to find a rare rainstorm. Finally it happens. As if in celebration, the springboks erupt with an outbreak of pronking. “They are dancing for joy,” Attenborough declares. Given the lucky breaks and creative breakthroughs coming your way, Cancerian, I foresee you doing something similar. Halloween costume suggestion: a pronking gazelle, a hippety-hopping bunny, a boisterous baby goat. LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) “A very little key will open

a very heavy door,” wrote Charles Dickens in his short story “Hunted Down.” Make that one of your guiding meditations in the coming days, Leo. In the back of your mind, keep visualizing the image of a little key opening a heavy door. Doing so will help ensure that you’ll be alert when clues about the real key’s location become available. You will have a keen intuitive sense of how you’ll need to respond if you want to procure it. Halloween costume suggestion: proud and protective possessor of a magic key.

VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The ancient Hindu

text known as the Kama Sutra gives extensive advice about many subjects, including love and sex. “Though a man loves a woman ever so much,” reads a passage in chapter four, “he never succeeds in winning her without a great deal of talking.” Take that as your cue, Virgo. In

by Rob Brezsny

the coming weeks, stir up the intimacy you want with a great deal of incisive talking that beguiles and entertains. Furthermore, use the same approach to round up any other experience you yearn for. The way you play with language will be crucial in your efforts to fulfill your wishes. Luckily, I expect your persuasive powers to be even greater than they usually are. Halloween costume suggestion: the ultimate salesperson.

LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) I encourage you to be super-rhythmical and melodious in the coming days. Don’t just sing in the shower and in the car. Hum and warble and whistle while shopping for vegetables and washing the dishes and walking the dog. Allot yourself more than enough time to shimmy and cavort, not just on the dance floor but anywhere else you can get away with it. For extra credit, experiment with lyrical flourishes whenever you’re in bed doing the jizzle-skazzle. Halloween costume suggestion: wandering troubadour, street musician, free-styling rapper, operatic diva, medicine woman who heals with sound. SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) I expect you to be in

a state of continual birth for the next four weeks. Awakening and activation will come naturally. Your drive to blossom and create may be irresistible, bordering on unruly. Does that sound overwhelming? I don’t think it will be a problem as long as you cultivate a mood of amazed amusement about how strong it feels. To help maintain your poise, keep in mind that your growth spurt is a natural response to the dissolution that preceded it. Halloween costume suggestion: a fountain, an erupting volcano, the growing beanstalk from the “Jack and the Beanstalk” fairy tale.

SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “Just as a

snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past over and over again.” So says Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield. Can you guess why I’m bringing it to your attention, Sagittarius? It’s one of those times when you can do yourself a big favor by sloughing off the stale, worn-out, decaying parts of your past. Luckily for you, you now have an extraordinary talent for doing just that. I suspect you will also receive unexpected help and surprising grace as you proceed. Halloween costume suggestion: a snake molting its skin.

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Speaking on behalf of your wild mind, I’m letting you know that you’re due for an immersion in revelry and festivity. Plugging away at business as usual could become counterproductive unless you take at least brief excursions to the frontiers of pleasure. High integrity may become sterile unless you expose it to an unpredictable adventure or two. Halloween costume suggestion: party animal, hell raiser, social butterfly, god or goddess of delight. Every one of us harbors a touch of crazy genius that periodically needs to be unleashed, and now is that time for you. AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) I hope you will choose a Halloween costume that emboldens you to feel powerful. For the next three weeks, it’s in your long-term interest to invoke a visceral sense of potency, dominion and sovereignty. What clothes and trappings might stimulate these qualities in you? Those of a king or queen? A rock star or CEO? A fairy godmother, superhero or dragon-tamer? Only you know which archetypal persona will help stir up your untapped reserves of confidence and command. PISCES. (Feb. 19-March 20) It’s time to stretch the boundaries, Pisces. You have license to expand the containers and outgrow the expectations and wage rebellion for the sheer fun of it. The frontiers are calling you. Your enmeshment in small talk and your attachment to trivial wishes are hereby suspended. Your mind yearns to be blown and blown and blown again! I dare you to wander outside your overly safe haven and go in quest of provocative curiosities. Halloween costume suggestions: mad scientist, wild-eyed revolutionary, Dr. Who.
