EXPERIMENT GOES DOWN THE TUBERS Maybe we’re not ready for Uber, after all. Two weeks ago, amid the highest of expectations, I launched a one-day experiment to replicate a ride-share service similar to those available to the rest of the planet. Although granted an exemption in New York City, Uber and Lyft remain banned here in upstate, pending legislative approval. My plan was to give locals a preview of what’s coming, assuming the Legislature realizes that sometimes our mules and buggies up in these parts break down, and we require one of those fancy modern motor cars to take us to the mercantile or a public hanging. I was jazzed. I proudly named my service Tuber, and I publicized it in the March 23 Syracuse New Times. Along with a free ride, I offered a complimentary salt potato to each passenger. In a freebie-loving town where people wait in line at the New York State Fair for 20 minutes to get a thimble of milk for a quarter, I figured my email inbox would overflow with ride requests.

4.6.16 - 4.12.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

I figured wrong. Total number of rides given in my eight-hour shift, not counting friends and family: 2. How big a bust was Tuber? At one point, I was so bored I stopped by the tire store to get my lug nuts re-torqued. Soon after my wife texted me, “If you’re looking for something to do, you have some shirts to pick up at the dry cleaner.” So, off I went to the dry cleaner, feeling like the world’s biggest Tuber goober. Oh, sure, there were the usual suspects, people who know me and make a habit of exploiting my generous nature. There was my friend Randy, who needed a ride home from the shop where his car was being repaired. Done. My daughter Miranda requested a ride home from school. Check. Another entitled freeloader was the beguiling and infinitely talented local actress Moe Harrington. She needed a ride home from her job at ACR Health. That journey required a slight detour to the extent that my mixed-breed security dog Larry wound up standing on a bar table with his head immersed in a bucket of peanuts. More on that shortly.

As for “real” passengers, they were trouble-free. My first pickup was Jake Irvin, a Syracuse University art education student. He needed a ride from the Syracuse Academy of Sciences Charter School on West Genesee Street, where he student-teaches, up to the SU campus. Nice kid. Jake, coincidentally, is a part-time Uber driver back home in Los Angeles. Lacking any interesting ride-share stories of my own, Jake helped me fill in the blanks. One time he drove three guys to an LA-area strip club. On the return, one of the patrons was on the verge of throwing up but gamely held off, even though Jake offered him multiple plastic garbage bags that he keeps in his car “just in case.” “He threw up on his own lawn,” Jake recalled fondly. Jake noted that as an Uber professional he often arbitrates backseat lovers quarrels. “I become like a therapist sometimes,” he said. My other legit passenger, Mark Clauss of Jamesville, came at the end of my shift. He wanted a ride to a nearby Chinese restaurant, Fortune Hawaii, to pick up some takeout, and then a ride back home. Not only did Mark not throw up in my car, he asked what he could get me for dinner. I declined his offer because I’d already had a hot dog and some peanuts at Wolff’s Biergarten, the new downtown soccer bar. True fact: Wolff’s allows dogs, even Larry, which is awesome. I only hope Larry didn’t ruin it for the other dogs. Several times he hopped onto one of the long picnic tables and commenced chomping on unshelled peanuts from a communal bucket. So gross. He also went missing. Eventually, Moe, the queen of community theater, found him in the ladies room. He emerged with a big stupid lupine grin on his face. I asked Moe not to share what she saw in there. That sums up my stint as a Tuber driver. I assumed I’d be wrapping up this column by urging you to write your assemblymen and state senators to demand that they legalize ride-sharing statewide. Don’t bother. I hear the mercantile’s out of writin’ paper anyway. SNT

BILLY SPRINGER BENEFIT

James Jelkin and Caitlyn Oenbrink in the Redhouse’s Passion Play. Genevieve Fridley photo

REDHOUSE MINES RUHL’S GOLD

Many contemporary audiences think of it as the plot of Jesus Christ Superstar. “Passion play” is the generic name for the dramatization of Christ’s trial and crucifixion, weaving together elements from the four Gospels. Productions began in the Middle Ages as the original community theater project, and more than a hundred versions will appear this very spring. Award-winning playwright Sarah Ruhl, known for The Clean House and In the Other Room (The Vibrator Play), opened her Passion Play at Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage in 2005. Her themes are not faith vs. skepticism but rather what happens to people when they start playing roles and reconciling art with their lives. Despite Ruhl’s credentials (including a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award” and a Pulitzer Prize) and ecstatic praise from influential critics (John Lahr of the New Yorker), her Passion Play is not performed very often. That’s partly because it’s so ambitious. It is as sweeping as Tony Kushner’s Angels in America in depictions of art and politics intertwined with religion. And it runs three hours and 40 minutes for the production running

through Saturday, April 9, at the Redhouse Arts Center. Most of its meaning is on the surface; it is never obscure. The greatest demand on the audience is that Ruhl expects us to remember what actors have said over centuries of action and hours of performance. Act I is set in a small town in the north of England, where Jennifer Burke’s dialect coaching makes everyone sound a bit like Ringo Starr. It’s 1575 and Protestant Queen Elizabeth (Amanda Bruton) is starting to repress the townies’ production of the Passion play as “too Catholic” and sacrilegious. Switch to Oberammergau, Bavaria, for the most famous of all Passion plays. By 1934 the free-floating local anti-Semitism in the portrayal of biblical Jews became strident under the encouragement of Adolf Hitler (Amanda Bruton again in an understated portrayal). The third act leaps forward to tiny Spearfish, S.D., in the near present of 1969-1984. Bitter moral choices over the Vietnam War linger in the hinterlands, but Ronald Reagan (Amanda Bruton!) coos unconvincingly, “It’s morning in America.” Passion Play may be large, but it does

Help Billy “Kick Cancer’s Ass”

not sprawl. You need to remember only 10 actors, plus Ms. Bruton. Six of them are always cast as the same characters in the different versions of the biblical story: James Jelkin as a bearded, dreamy-eyed Jesus; Will Graziano a scowling Pontius Pilate; blond Caitlyn Oenbrink a slender and luminous Virgin Mary; tall Kate Fahey’s Mary Magdalene as a blousy redhead; Ben Sheedy as a barking but not always astute director of the plays-withinthe-plays; and adolescent Sadie Fridley as the impudent village idiot. In each instance, we pay more attention to what could be called the backstage drama. In 1575 the squabbling over roles recalls Peter Quince and Bottom in the Mechanicals’ scenes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. All performers want to get into the show, regardless of their suitability for playing specific roles. The sharpest conflict erupts between two brothers, one favored by nature to play Jesus and his resentful brother, malformed from birth, destined to play the hated Pilate. In all three acts the tension between Jesus and Pilate is central, but its resolution varies greatly in each reiteration. In 1934 Germany, the Jesus model of self-sacrifice sends the actor off on a moral quest in life. But in the Vietnam-era Passion play, it is the actor playing the responsibility-shirking Pilate who makes the stronger moral stand, lamenting sins committed in a far-off jungle. Once again artistic director Stephen Svoboda pulls off the impossible: an epic on one of the smallest stages in town. We can start with the excellent performances of his leads, especially Graziano and Jelkin, and many important supporting roles, such as those of Colin Wilson, Joe Fanelli, John Bixler and Sadie Fridley. Katharine Tarkulich’s many costumes, notably for the three incarnations of Amanda Bruton, are all first class. And props master Morgan Embry’s floating fish spoof Ruhl’s own high-flown intellectualism. SNT

DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR A FAST FARCE

You don’t need five slamming doors to have a French farce. Puncturing inflated egotism, vigorous wordplay, impudent servants and mistaken identity of characters are still such reliable devices that they can carry the evening. That’s the case with The Liar, performed by the Boot and Buskin Theatre Club at Le Moyne College’s Coyne Center. Don’t feel left behind if you did not

know that the august dramatist Pierre Corneille (1606-1684), the “Father of French Tragedy,” ever stooped to such a lowbrow form as farce. Well, he did, but until recently they were not often performed. But there has been rising interest in them on the printed page because of the author’s complex verbal humor. Top literary translators like Richard Wilbur and Ranjit Bolt have been calling attention to

these works. And adapter David Ives, the Robin Williams of contemporary American playwrights, thinks this one should leap from the page to the stage. Corneille’s Le Menteur appeared in 1644, but the faithfully translated title The Liar has been avoided until recently. This is possibly to avoid confusion with Carlo Goldoni’s frequently-performed comedy The Liar, written about a hundred years later. In both, male characters wear knee breeches and sometimes break through the fourth wall, but in Corneille the wigs are longer and there is more talk about sex. Tall, dashing Doronte (Drew Gripe), the title character, has just returned from the wars against those foul Germans. Or so he says. On his first day back in Paris, he contracts with an inventive urchin named Cliton (scene-stealing Tom Vazquez), who wears a sign reading “Rent Me” around his neck. Familiar with the city, Cliton knows the way to the elegant Tuileries Gardens, where Doronte meets two smashing lovelies, Clarice (Noelle Killius) and Lucrece (Brittany Fayle). The two damsels don’t look too much like each other, as Lucrece is taller and has red hair. Audiences used to comedy from any

century immediately recognize that the similarity of their names is an invitation to trouble. Even Doronte can’t keep them straight. Independent of this meeting, Doronte’s lumbering old father Geronte (Orlando Ocampo) has prepared for his son’s homecoming by fixing him up with a lovely young girl named Clarice. Wrongly thinking that the girl with whom he was smitten with him at the Tuileries is Lucrece, Doronte commits his first lie on stage: It is that he is already married, so he will have nothing to do with his father’s fixup, even though she is indeed the one he has the jones for. The real Clarice is actually engaged to Alcippe (Andy Hughes), a handsome dude who nonetheless walks into a pillar at his entrance. Alcippe is a childhood friend of Doronte, but proposes a duel over the favors of Clarice based on the father’s unfulfilled arrangement. When Doronte pleads, “Not her,” he’s telling an untruth, if not exactly a lie. Corneille extends the theme of doubling to the lower social orders as well. The first servant of Clarice and Lucrece we meet is the pliable and sexually accommodating Isabelle (Kit Kuebler), whose attentions to Cliton distract him from attending to his employer. When she’s away, she is replaced by her almost look-alike twin Sabine (Kit Kuebler again), a scolding harpy with pursed lips. All the same, her meager charms work to great effect on Alcippe’s foppish sidekick, Philiste (Jace Biedekapp). The Liar marks the return of longtime theater head Bill Morris, well remembered for bringing alive long-neglected classics. Along with the carefully choreographed blocking, assisted by fight manager Alec Barbour, Morris pays close attention to diction and projection in a play that many people are happy just to read. Not only is the dialogue in iambic pentameter, often with outrageous forced rhymes, but it is filled with allusiveness, such as, “Who is that imaginary invalid?” Even though scenery designer Karel Blakely’s stage is nominally bare, this is a rich production with MGM-level costumes and music from Erik Satie through Count Basie. Ain’t that the truth? SNT

TOPIC: STAGE

By Bill DeLapp Jimmy Curtin and Marguerite Mitchell in Rarely Done’s Jeffrey. Courtney Lepore photo.

A COMEDY ON CRUISE CONTROL

Paul Rudnick’s 1993 off-Broadway comedy hit Jeffrey dared to mine humor from the then-raging AIDS crisis of 1990s-era Manhattan. While 23 years of AIDS awareness hasn’t dimmed the urgency of the play’s social message, it’s still an often uproarious show, as proven by director Dan Tursi’s current mounting from Rarely Done Productions, running through April 16 at Jazz Central, 441 E. Washington St. Unlike those 1960s sex comedies that starred Doris Day as a virgin on the verge, Rudnick’s work presents a boymeets-boy rom-com with a noteworthy twist. Wannabe actor and part-time catering waiter Jeffrey (Ryan Diana) is also a promiscuous love muffin who grows more wary of the AIDS dilemma. The play’s opening line (“It broke!”) as Jeffrey and a one-night stand thrash under the sheets strikes a fearful note, as our leading man contemplates his options. So Jeffrey impulsively takes a vow of celibacy, which becomes immediately tested when he meets a hunka-hunka eye candy named Steve (Derek Potocki). Complicating matters is that Steve admits from the outset that he has been diagnosed HIV-positive. It’s a burst of honesty to let his potential partner know what he might be getting into, but in-

stead the emotionally confused Jeffrey retreats to his no-sex mantra. Jeffrey’s plot could well have influenced Amy Schumer’s 2015 movie Trainwreck, which also focused on the actions of a sleep-around character. Getting sandwiched between the Jeffrey-Steve relationship is a slew of send-ups, as Rudnick spoofs game shows (It’s Just Sex, with Jimmy Curtin as pompadoured host Skip Winkly), a Best Little Whorehouse-styled dance hoedown, TV cop dramas and then-current Broadway hits such as Cats, which only demonstrates that the statute of limitations still hasn’t expired regarding gags about Andrew Lloyd Webber. Rudnick doesn’t shy from occasional moments of sexual frankness, either, although he does pull humor from unlikely places. During a group-grope session at a rough-trade bar, Jeffrey deadpans, “Why do I feel like I’m on a subway?” Director Tursi first guided a production of Jeffrey for a series of sellout Lerner & Loewe's runs in summer 2000, so he has a knack Lerner & Loewe's for maintaining a kinetic pace with this show’s vaudeville-style blackout sketches. Rudnick’s play has a lot on its plate, from swishy stereotypes and show-tune references to sharp satire and sweet-natured characterizations, yet Tursi manages to keep all the disparate Friday, April 8, 2016 at 8pm elements together with a stylish élan. MASKED MANIA RETURNS WITH PHANTOM TOUR

For the first time in a decade, The Phantom of the Opera returns to Central New York as Famous Artists/NAC Entertainment presents the North American touring production for a stretch of performances at downtown Syracuse’s Landmark Theatre. The Sir Cameron Mackintosh-produced musical has claimed the accolade as the highest-grossing box-office show since coming into the spotlight in 1986. While the actors are dressed in the original

designs, the story and some aesthetic aspects, including the infamous chandelier, have received upgrades. Katie Travis, who plays the Swedish protagonist Christine Daaé, said her role is slightly different and portrayed more realistically. Her infatuation with the Phantom isn’t as magically hypnotic as it is a natural love. “(Christine) is intelligent,” Travis said in a telephone interview, “doing the best with this fork in the road.” The magic isn’t lost because the

coming-of-age aspect puts her into a situation where she has to make a decision. “It’s an iconic role,” said Travis, who did some homework by checking out videos of previous productions and revisiting cast recordings. “I have a lot of respect for the character’s history.” Yet she credited herself and her fellow actors for adding personal touches to make the roles uniquely their own. “At some point you have to let it go,” she said. “You have to let yourself grow into the role.” Chris Mann portrays the divided protagonist and antagonist Erik. “It’s terrifying and nerve-wracking,” the vocalist noted about the title role. “This is a dream opportunity.” Mann, who was runner-up during the second season of the NBC talent show The Voice, grew up listening to the 1986 CD featuring the original London cast of Phantom, including Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, Steve Barton and Rosemary Ashe. In 2012 Mann released his own CD, Roots, a pop- and classical-infused album that showcases his ability to blend the two genres. He considered himself a pop singer before venturing into classical material, but he described the transition as comfortable. Following the intense, multi-level audition process for the role, Mann allowed, “Phantom feels so natural.”

Mann’s wife, Laura, is also touring with the show as an understudy for five different roles. She looks forward to the Salt City performances as a means for revisiting her roots. “I have a musical theater degree from Syracuse University,” she said. “This is going to be an exciting opportunity.” Along with the collectively proclaimed “Phamily” of the 80-plus cast and staff, Laura Mann will get to take the floorboards of the 1928-vintage Landmark Theatre. The venue should add authenticity to the touring production, especially considering that author Gaston Leroux penned the French novel almost two decades prior to the opening of the Landmark, which was originally christened Loew’s State. Heather Chockley, a seasoned stage manager, was here when Phantom played at the Mulroy Civic Center’s 1970s-era modern Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater. Yet she also noted the appeal of the Landmark’s old-school setting. “Our show fits in well at historic theaters,” she said, “but this (Landmark) is a difficult venue for us. Stage left is not that big.” Much of the production’s set and storage fits on that section of the stage, but Chockley said that they’ll be able to work around it. An advance crew surveyed the venue last year to draft the layouts in order to tailor the spectacular setup to ensure everything will fit, as well as figuring out critical components such as cues for lighting and music. “We also have about 20 trucks to move everything,” she added with a chuckle. One particular star of this show, stored in a box of its own, is the new Howard Eaton-designed chandelier. The company, which designed the lighting of the Olympic rings for the 2012 London opening ceremonies, created the Phantom staple. The mammoth light fixture weighs in at a little more than a ton, has a diameter of about 10 feet and features more than 6,000 beads. After each city, all of the beads are polished. “It’s a show within a show,” Chockley summed up about the production’s aesthetic value. The pyrotechnics, original costumes and some set designs from almost 30 years ago all play a huge part in the timeless storytelling. The show’s enduring popularity explains why The Phantom of the Opera is back to haunt the Landmark for 15 spectacle-filled performances. SNT

RUBES, RAFFLES AND REDEMPTION

There’s been much talk in the current presidential election about rural folks who feel they’ve been left behind. James Valcq and Fred Alley’s The Spitfire Grill: A Musical, the current production from the Syracuse University Drama Department, could be their show. It’s set in Gilead, a Wisconsin burg hard hit by the closure of the local quarry. Mary Olin Geiger’s scenic design suggests blight and decay. In case we miss the point, music director Brian Cimmet brings the musical ensemble on stage dressed in shabby jeans and flannel shirts. Action begins when a scruffy female ex-con, Percy (Maria Bufalini), wanders in and hopes the sheriff, Joe (Michael Roach), can help her get a job, any job. Spitfire, both the 1996 movie and the 2001 off-Broadway musical, have upand-down histories but retain coteries of loyal fans. Lee David Zlotoff’s movie, set in Maine, premiered as a Sundance Film Festival audience favorite, and then was released nationally to mixed reviews and indifferent box-office. Wisconsin natives Valcq and Alley reset the action and tinkered with some of the characters. Alley died at age 38 just before the show’s disappointing two-week run, which turned out not to be a bad omen at all. Despite its unfashionable bluegrass and folkie score, its lack of a single hit song or a boy-meets-girl love story, The Spitfire Grill: A Musical has steadily been gaining audiences in regional theaters. Chalk it up to the faith in redemption. Not for nothing is the town called Gilead. Irascible, gray-haired Hannah Ferguson (Jenna Najjar) has been trying to sell the semi-unprofitable grill of the title for 10 years and hardly needs to hire an extra hand. Even more when she’s a taciturn kid with a criminal past. Tall soprano Shelby (Kelsey Roberts), married to Hannah’s bitter, controlling nephew Caleb (Jerrod Everett), quickly comes to Percy’s aid. Some of her musical numbers give useful exposition, like word of Hannah’s lost son, but more often she’s a facilitator and an advocate. Together she and Percy coax Hannah into a seemingly implausible plan. They’ll

run a national raffle, asking contestants to turn in a $100 check along with an essay about why they would like to run the broken-down grill. Against all expectations, the contest brings in mail by the wheelbarrow, as celebrated in the exuberant first-act curtain number, “Shoot the Moon,” with checks flying all over the stage. Reading the poignant essays, which dominates the beginning of the second act, becomes the center of action, even though there are buds of romance and startling reappearances. Lonely, disappointed people all over the country, many in soulless apartment buildings, yearn for the community and fellowship of the only diner in a small isolated town, like Cheers in the boonies. Not unlike the end of It’s a Wonderful Life, the folks in Gilead already have the best that can be had, and Percy can join in. Don’t let this spare summary encourage a sarcastic “Awwww.” Director and department chair Ralph Zito keeps the sentiment reined in and stages Spitfire Grill to exploit its strengths. Musically, it exceeds expectations. Skirting into country idiom does not forbid passages of subtlety and affecting nuance. No less than Stephen Sondheim is on record as being one of Spitfire’s admirers. Not surprisingly, Percy gets many of the best numbers, even though she is not,

strictly speaking, a romantic lead. This is a breakout performance for Maria Bufalini, who expresses the widest range of emotions and travels the longest arc. Her first-act duet with Shelby, “The Colors of Paradise,” is the top moment of the show. Although hardly a youth-oriented vehicle, The Spitfire Grill turns out to be better-suited for a college company than one might expect. Jenna Najjar scores

high as Hannah, in the usually thankless task of playing a character three times her age. Ethereal Kelsey Roberts’ Shelby almost feels like the lead. And in the unsympathetic role of Caleb, wonderful Jerrod Everett’s “Digging Stone” takes us back to reality. SNT

MARCH MADNESS LED TO ORANGE GLADNESS

In addition to turning this March and early April into one big basketball party in Central New York, the Syracuse University men’s and women’s basketball teams taught their fans and this community that Yogi Berra was dead on: It ain’t over ’til it’s over. The men’s team was left for dead several times this season, most recently on March 9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. That’s when Trevor Cooney’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer fell short as the Orange suffered a heartbreaking 72-71 loss to Pittsburgh that seemingly knocked SU out of the NCAA Tournament. And after getting blown out in backto-back games to national powers Notre Dame and Louisville in late January, the women’s team appeared destined for another year of being good enough to make the NCAA Tournament, but not nearly good enough to challenge for the title. But as March turned into April, both teams were still standing in the Final Four following the most improbable tournament runs in the history of both teams. The men’s season ended Saturday, April 2, with an 83-66 loss to ACC rival North Carolina in the national semifinals, while the women reached the Tuesday, April 5, national championship game against Cicero-North Syracuse High School product Breanna Stewart and the mighty Connecticut Huskies. “I think we were just at a crossroads (in late January) where we needed to win some big games,” SU women’s coach Quentin Hillsman said before the Final Four. “And we just really sat down as a program and said, ‘What are our goals?’ And our goals were and are to be where we are right now: to be in the Final Four

and trying to win a national championship. And I think that we just came out of that room and just said, ‘Hey, what’s the path to getting to it?’’’ The path for the SU women started in the wreckage of those ugly back-to-back losses to ACC foes Notre Dame and Louisville. In losing by 28 points to Notre Dame and 18 to Louisville, the Orange never held a lead. From a physical standpoint, Hillsman decided to give his players more rest between games so they could maintain their frenetic pace during contests. From a mental standpoint, the coaches and players had to make a commitment that it was important for them to win those big games. “It was a wake-up call,” redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes said. “We can’t allow ourselves to not play hard and disappoint ourselves.” After that loss to Louisville, the Orange won 16 of its next 17 games before the national championship game to reach 30 wins for the first time in school history. Along the way, Syracuse defeated four ranked teams, including Louisville in the ACC Tournament and No. 2 South Carolina in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Before this season, the Orange had never reached the Sweet 16, but wins over South Carolina and traditional women’s power Tennessee propelled SU to the Final Four. And in its first-ever Final Four game on Sunday, April 3, the No. 4 seed Orange destroyed No. 7 Washington 80-59 as SU set a Final Four record with 12 3-pointers. Brianna Butler sank four from beyond the arc as she set the NCAA single-season record with 128 3-pointers on the season. “We entered this tournament with great expectations of being able to possibly be here (in the Final Four),” Hillsman said. “I thought our kids started to compete really well the second half of the season. I give our kids so much credit just for being tough and for toughing out some of these games.”

Not-So-Great Expectations

At the start of this season, the expectations for the men’s team were relatively low. Fifth-year senior Michael Gbinije was in his first year as the starting point guard, center DaJuan Coleman was returning after missing two years with knee injuries, and the Orange didn’t know what it would get from freshmen Malachi Richardson, Tyler Lydon and Frank Howard. A 6-0 start was soon dashed by a seven-week stretch in which the Orange went 4-7 overall (with head-scratching losses to Georgetown and St. John’s) and 4-5 under interim coach Mike Hopkins as head coach Jim Boeheim served his NCAA-imposed nine-game suspension. SU’s only wins during that period were against Colgate, Cornell, Montana State and Texas Southern. After losing to North Carolina in Boeheim’s first game back to fall to 0-4 in the ACC, SU won eight of nine with key victories at Duke and against Notre Dame at the Carrier Dome. But just when it seemed like the NCAA Tournament was a lock, the Orange dropped four of its last five regular-season games and that ACC Tournament game to Pittsburgh — a loss that most “bracketologists” predicted would keep SU out of the March Madness dance. But thanks to regular-season wins over Texas A&M, Connecticut and Duke, the SU men’s team squeaked into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 10 seed. While that upset many national college basketball followers (ESPN’s Mike Greenberg said this season would be “a joke” if the Orange won the national title), the Orange proved the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee was right by defeating No. 7 seed Dayton, No. 15 Middle Tennessee, No. 11 Gonzaga and No. 1 Virginia to reach the Final Four. The Orange rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit against Gonzaga and a 15-point deficit with nine and a half minutes remaining against Virginia.

Against North Carolina, the Orange sliced a 17-point deficit to seven midway through the second half, but the magic ran out against a talented Tar Heels team that was ranked No. 1 to start the season and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament after winning the ACC regular-season and tournament championships. While it was a disappointing loss, the Orange had already shocked their fans and their coach by reaching the sixth Final Four in school history and becoming the first No. 10 seed to make it that far. “I told the players after the (North Carolina) game that I’m really proud, more proud of this team than I think any team that I’ve ever coached,” said Boeheim, who just finished his 40th year as SU’s coach. “It would have been very easy to have a horrendous year this year, all things considered.” And why didn’t it turn out that way? “I just think they had a little heart,” Boeheim said. “I give my team a tremendous amount of credit for being able to do what they’ve done. I’m going to be like a football coach now and I’m going to have to look at the tapes more closely to figure out how we got here, because I’m not really sure.” Boeheim won’t have to watch any tapes to know the expectations will be higher for his team next season, particularly if Richardson puts the NBA on hold and comes back for his sophomore season. Lydon has already said he’s going to return, so if Richardson joins him the Orange will have replacements for Gbinije and Cooney, with Howard at the point and Richardson at shooting guard. Lydon will be able to spend all of his time at his

natural forward position with 7-foot-2 center and Providence College transfer Paschal Chukwu available next year to spell Coleman at center. And power forward Tyler Roberson will also return with his potential to record a double-double every game The Orange’s recruiting class is ranked among the best in the nation, with 6-5 guard Tyus Battle and 6-8 forward Matthew Moyer already signed to play for the Orange. That class could get even better if 6-10 center Taurean Thompson, a top 100 recruit, picks Syracuse over Georgetown, Seton Hall and Providence. So it’s no wonder that when Boeheim was asked for about the millionth time if he was going to retire after this incredible run, he said he wasn’t about to quit now. “I’m more satisfied than I’ve ever been in any year that I’ve ever coached, with the possible exception of the year we won it all,” Boeheim said. “But other than that year, I’m more proud and more happy — whatever the word is I’m looking for, satisfied — with what this team has done than any year that I’ve ever coached.” Last Laugh: Trevor Cooney’s love-hate relationship with SU fans ended on a high note as the fifth-year senior guard enjoyed a strong NCAA Tournament and scored 22 points in the Final Four loss to North Carolina. Cooney finished his career with 1,437 points in 141 games and is the only Orange player to play in two Final Fours. “I was very fortunate to be part of the Syracuse family for five years and I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” Cooney said. “And this was a hell of a run to go out on.” SNT

ow that the Final Four is finished, it’s time for baseball and the Syracuse Chiefs aren’t wasting any time jumping into their promotional schedule. The Chiefs will open their 2016 season on Thursday, April 7, 2:05 p.m., and Friday, April 8, 6:35 p.m., at NBT Bank Stadium with two promotional staples: $1 Thursday ($1 for hot dogs and Coca-Cola products, $2 for certain beers), and Fireworks Friday. This Friday was also supposed to be “Don Waful Day,” in honor of the former president of the team’s board of directors and the oldest living Syracuse University alumnus, who will turn 100 on April 8, but the ceremonies will be rescheduled for later this spring. From Bryce Harper Bobblehead Day to Star Wars Night, the Chiefs will have one or more promotions for all 72 home games this season. For a complete list of the team’s schedule and promotions, visit syracusechiefs.com. “With giveaways, fireworks and awesome entertainment acts, every night is an event night at NBT Stadium,” Chiefs third-year general manager Jason Smorol said in a news release. “We’ve listened to our fans for two years and we will continue to give people want they want: a family-friendly and energetic atmosphere every night!” After winning the International League’s North Division title in 2014, the Chiefs finished a disappointing 66-78 last season under manager Billy Gardner, who returns for his third season as Syracuse’s skipper. Syracuse is the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals and feature the Nationals’ top prospect, shortstop Trea Turner. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Cazenovia’s Empire Farmstead Brewery gets ready to roll out the barrels By Margaret McCormick

T

urn off Route 20 onto Route 13 south in Cazenovia and, just past the Lorenzo State Historic Site, you see it rising: a large structure with a trio of turrets in the style of the Madison County hops barns of yesteryear. It’s the long-awaited Empire Farmstead Brewery, and it won’t be long now before you can stop in for a tasting — or pick up a six-pack in your favorite store. Slated to open next month, the 42,000-square-foot countryside spin-off of downtown Syracuse’s popular Empire Brewing Company will feature “beer gardens” for growing some of its own hops, barley, rye, wheat and other ingredients, a shiny new brewhouse and bottling line, an aging cellar, a large tasting room and “farmeteria’’ restaurant, a suite of corporate offices and a gym for employees. When the new brewery is up and running, Empire will transition from a seven-barrel microbrewery to one of the largest craft breweries in New York state, able to produce 60 barrels of beer at a time and 30,000 barrels a year (with capacity to grow). A barrel equals 31 gallons of beer, so do the math: That’s a LOT of beer.

4.6.16 - 4.12.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

“I believe with all the breweries out there, the only way for us to compete is with an elite brewery,’’ says Empire founder David Katleski, who also serves as president of the New York State Brewers Association. “It will really set us apart. What we’re doing here is we’re trying to create an experience, an experience where you see, smell, feel and taste how beer is grown and made.’’ For Katleski, who lives in Cazenovia with his family, the last year has been a whirlwind of bringing the Farmstead Brewery off the drawing board’s blueprints and to fruition. The delivery of the brewhouse equipment on a bitter cold day in January made it real. Brewing is scheduled to begin April 11 and bottles should be in stores by May 1.

DRINK MADISON COUNTY The Copper Turret Restaurant, Morrisville The Route 20 venue is opening a brewpub in conjunction with the SUNY Morrisville Brewing Institute. Construction on the brewery will begin this summer, with select drafts available at that time and a grand opening in the fall, according to head brewer Micheal Coons. 684-6699, copperturret.com. Critz Farms Brewing & Cider Co., Cazenovia The pick-your-own agritourism destination (and tasting room) re-branded its beverage side last year and recently introduced craft beer in addition to its hard cider made from apples grown on the farm. 662-3355, critzfarms.com. Erie Canal Brewing Company, Canastota This village brewery makes three beers: Muleskinner Pale Ale, Lock Tender IPA and and Amber Waves of Grain, an amber ale. The Muleskinner is an all-New York state product, made with hops and barley grown at the brewery’s farm in Chittenango. 510-5001, eriecanalbrewingcompany.com.

Asked if he could envision such an expansive state-of-the-art beer production facility when he opened the downtown brewery in 1994, Katleski replies: “I couldn’t even envision it when I saw it on paper. It’s starting to make sense now. We’re really excited.’’ Katleski isn’t the only one who’s excited. Tim Butler, director of brewing operations, has spent the winter getting to know the new equipment and running tests in preparation for brewing. The early focus of Butler and his team will be five signature beers for distribution: Slo Mo’ IPA, East Coast Amber Ale, White Aphro Wit Ale, Black Magic Stout and Skinny Atlas Kolsch. “It’s certainly a lot different than the brewpub. Everything is a lot bigger here, but I’m not scared or nervous or anything,’’ Butler said last week. “The brewing process is the brewing process. I’m looking forward to ramping it up.’’ Ben Reilley, owner (with his wife, Shioban) of Life of Reilley Distilling and Wine Co., also in Cazenovia, believes the opening of the Empire Farmstead Brewery will have a major impact on the Cazenovia/Madison County beverage community, which includes breweries, a winery and several craft spirits makers. (See Drink Madison County sidebar.) Reilley launched Life of Reilley in 2013 and produces three kinds of vodka at a facility east of the village. His business is undergoing expansion and he’s looking forward to the day when he can welcome visitors to a tasting room. “We’re doing back flips over here,’’ Reilley says of the Farmstead Brewery. “Just think about how many people they’re going to bring to town. People from all over the world are going to come to this place. And those people are going to say, ‘I’m here. Now what else am I going to do?’” The Empire Farmstead Brewery is scheduled to open to the public on Memorial Day weekend. Until that time, here are some details. 1. A Unique Brewhouse. The brewhouse at the Farmstead Brewery is fully automated and the first of its kind, anywhere.

The brand-new, mirror-finish grain mills, tanks and fermentation vessels are designed by Syracuse’s Feldmeier Equipment Inc. The company has been making stainless steel processing equipment for more than 60 years, but this is its first foray into making equipment for the brewing industry. “They gave us exactly what we wanted,’’ Katleski says. Boilers and other equipment in the brewhouse were made by Fulton Boiler Works, of Pulaski. 2. Sixty Bottles of Beer Per Minute. All of the beer made at Empire Brewing Company downtown goes into kegs. At Farmstead, 65 percent of the beer brewed will be bottled for local, regional, national (and hopefully international) distribution and 35 percent will be kegged, according to Katleski. Canned beer will debut in the future. A key part of the new brewhouse is a centrifuge, which clarifies beer by centrifugal force, and a bottling line commissioned from Prospero Equipment, of Pleasantville. “We’ll be able to hum along at 60 bottles of beer a minute,’’ Katleski says. 3. A Farm Brewery with Local Relationships. The Empire Farmstead Brewery is categorized as a “farm brewery” under a 2013 state law that provides incentives for using New York state ingredients. The Farmstead Brewery will dedicate 12 of its 22 acres to “beer gardens’’ planted with ingredients used to make beers: hops, barley, rye, wheat, herbs, fruits and vegetables. The brewery will source hops from Clark Hollow Hops, The Bineyard, Foothill Hops Farm and Pedersen Farms, among others. 4. Eat Where You Live at the Farmeteria. Empire’s downtown brewpub is known for reasonably priced food with a local focus. Expect more of the same at the Farmstead Brewery, with a twist. “Everyone is asking, ‘What kind of food are you going to have?’” Katleski says. He came up with the name “Farmeteria’’ to describe his vision: an open, European-style beer hall tasting room with tables for two and four, long community tables and multiple windows for ordering food, with table delivery. The menu will feature soups, salads, sandwiches, local cheeses and house-made sausages and charcuterie. The tasting room and

It has been supplying hops to home brewers and small breweries (including Empire) for years. Owners Kate and Larry Fisher plan to open a farm brewery this summer. 495-2451, foothillhops.com. Good Nature Brewing, Hamilton This microbrewery, launched in 2012, is undergoing a major expansion and relocation this year that will take it from 1,000 barrels a year to about 4,000 barrels. The new brewery will be located south of the Colgate University campus in Hamilton and will have a tasting room. restaurant area will seat 100 and open to a 60-by-30-foot seasonal patio with more seating. A smoker outside will allow the kitchen staff to smoke meats. The spacious French-style kitchen will have a pizza oven for flatbread pies, windows that look out to the dining area and windows that overlook the countryside. Some produce will be grown on site. Katleski also expects the kitchen to work with about 40 local growers and producers, including Greyrock Farm, a year-round CSA (community-supported agriculture) that supplies the Thai basil used in Empire’s Golden Dragon beer. Most of the beef used in the restaurant will come from nearby Meadows Farm. The tasting room and Farmeteria will be open year-round, Thursdays to Sundays, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. “We’re really a production brewery first,’’ Katleski says. 5. Work Where You Live. The Empire Farmstead Brewery will employ about 70 people in a variety of positions: agriculture, administration, brewing, packaging, retail, sales, marketing, design, events and restaurant. The second floor of the facility includes corporate office space and a gym for employees, with locker rooms and showers. 6. Green Acres. Meadows Farm has supplied Wagyu beef for Empire Brewing Company for years, and Empire has been supplying the farm with its spent brewing grain to feed the livestock. When the Farmstead Brewery opens, the spent grain and the beef will only have to travel a short distance: just across the road. Meadows Farm plans to increase its herd to meet Empire’s growing restaurant needs, Katleski notes.

4.6.16 - 4.12.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

The Empire Farmstead Brewery tasting room, gift shop and restaurant will strive to maintain a carbon footprint of 30 miles or less. 7. Paying Homage to Salt City’s Beer History. Syracuse was once home to dozens of breweries. One of the longest-running of them was Haberle Brewing Company, located on Butternut Street, which closed in 1962 and was reduced to a pile of bricks. The patio outside the tasting room and Farmeteria will be lined with 30,000 restored bricks from Haberle. Director of operations Nick Irvine acquired the bricks thanks to Craigslist and Rocci DeCaro, of Syracuse. 8. Take a Hike, Ride a Bike. Katleski, a big fan of bicycling, plans to have bike racks for visitors who arrive by bike and employees who bike to work. He encourages people to hike and bike the Burlingame Trails, accessible from the Farmstead Brewery property and from the Lorenzo State Historic Site. The recreation trails are moderately hilly and offer views of Cazenovia Lake and the village. 9. The Downtown Syracuse Brewpub Isn’t Going Away. The Armory Square destination at 120 Walton St. will become the incubator or pilot program for Empire’s new and more experimental beers. And the restaurant will remain open. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is regarded as one of the greats, in the same league as Picasso and Kandinsky. Even in his 80s, he was still creating marvels that one critic said seemed “to come from the springtime of the world.” As unique as his work was, he was happy to acknowledge the fact that he thrived on the influence of other artists. And yet he also treasured the primal power of his innocence. He trusted his childlike wonder. “You study, you learn, but you guard the original naiveté,” he said. “It has to be within you, as desire for drink is within the drunkard or love is within the lover.” These are good, sweet thoughts for you to keep in mind right now, Aries.

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) Taurus-born Kurt

Gödel (1906-1978) was among history’s greatest logicians. His mastery of rational thought enabled him to exert a major influence on scientific thinking in the 20th century. Yet he also had an irrational fear of being poisoned, which made him avoid food unless his wife cooked it. One of the morals of his story is that reason and delusion may get all mixed up in the same location. Sound analysis and crazy superstition can get so tangled they’re hard to unravel. The coming week will be an excellent time to meditate on how this phenomenon might be at work in you. You now have an extraordinary power to figure out which is which, and then take steps to banish the crazy, superstitious, fearful stuff.

GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) For a time, pioneer

physicist Albert Einstein served as a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J. On one occasion, a student complained to him, “The questions on this year’s exam are the same as last year’s.” Einstein agreed that they were, then added, “but this year all the answers are different.” I’m seeing a similar situation in your life, Gemini. For you, too, the questions on this year’s final exam are virtually identical to last year’s final exam -- and yet every one of the answers has changed. Enjoy the riddle.

cle for the coming weeks is a fable from 2,600 years ago. It was originally written by the Greek storyteller Aesop, and later translated by Joseph Jacobs. As the tale begins, a dog has discovered a hunk of raw meat lying on the ground. He’s clenching his treasure in his mouth as he scurries home to enjoy it in peace. On the way, he trots along a wooden plank that crosses a rapidly flowing stream. Gazing down, he sees his reflection in the water below. What? He imagines it’s another dog with another slab of meat. He tries to snatch away this bonus treat, but in doing so, drops his own meat. It falls into the stream and is whisked away. The moral of the fable: “Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.”

LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) “I never get lost

because I don’t know where I am going,” said the Japanese poet known as Ikkyu. I stop short of endorsing this perspective for full-time, longterm use, but I think it suits you fine for right now. According to my astrological projections, you can gather the exact lessons you need simply by wandering around playfully, driven by cheerful curiosity about the sparkly sights -- and not too concerned with what they mean. P.S.: Don’t worry if the map you’re consulting doesn’t seem to match the territory you’re exploring.

VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) “If literally every

action a human can perform was an Olympic sport,” Reddit.com asked its users, “which events would you win medals in?” A man named Hajimotto said his champion-level skill was daydreaming. “I can zone out and fantasize for hours at a time,” he testified. “This is helpful when I am waiting in line.” You Virgos are not typically Olympic-class daydreamers, but I encourage you to increase your skills in the coming weeks. It’ll

be a favorable time for your imagination to run wild and free. How exuberantly can you fantasize? Find out!

LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) In his book Strange

Medicine, Nathan Belofsky tells us about unusual healing practices of the past. In ancient Egypt, for example, the solution for a toothache was to have a dead mouse shoved down one’s throat. If someone had cataracts, the physician might dribble hot broken glass into their eyes. I think these strategies qualify as being antidotes that were worse than the conditions they were supposed to treat. I caution you against getting sucked into “cures” like those in the coming days. The near future will be a favorable time for you to seek healing, but you must be very discerning as you evaluate the healing agents.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) In his poem “The

Snowmass Cycle,” Stephen Dunn declares that everyone “should experience the double fire, of what he wants and shouldn’t have.” I foresee a rich opportunity coming up for you to do just that, Scorpio. And yes, I do regard it as rich, even marvelous, despite the fact that it may initially evoke some intense poignancy. Be glad for this crisp revelation about a strong longing whose fulfillment would be no damn good for you!

SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “When I look

at my life I realize that the mistakes I have made, the things I really regret, were not errors of judgment but failures of feeling.” Writer Jeanette Winterson said that, and I’m passing it on to you at the exact moment you need to hear it. Right now, you are brave enough and strong enough to deal with the possibility that maybe you’re not doing all you can to cultivate maximum emotional intelligence. You are primed to take action and make big changes if you discover that you’re not feeling as much as you can about the important things in your life.

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Psychotherapist

Jennifer Welwood says that sadness is often at the root of anger. Feelings of loss and disappointment and heartache are the more primary emotions, and rage is a reflexive response to them. But sadness often makes us feel vulnerable, while rage gives us at least the illusion of being strong, and so most of us prefer the latter. But Welwood suggests that tuning in to the sadness almost always leads to a more expansive understanding of your predicament; and it often provides the opportunity for a more profound self-transformation. I invite you to apply these meditations to your own life, Capricorn. The time is right.

AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “The causes of

human actions are usually immeasurably more complex and varied than our subsequent explanations of them.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky said that in his novel The Idiot, and now I’m passing it on to you just in the nick of time. In the coming weeks, it’s especially important for you to not oversimplify your assessments of what motivates people -- both those you respect and those you don’t fully trust. For your own sake, you can’t afford to naively assume either the best or the worst about anyone. If you hope to further your own agendas, your nuanced empathy must be turned up all the way.

PISCES. (Feb. 19-March 20) “Believing love is

work is certainly better than believing it’s effortless, ceaseless bliss,” says author Eric LeMay. That’s advice I hope you’ll keep close at hand in the coming weeks, Pisces. The time will be right for you to exert tremendous effort in behalf of everything you love dearly -- to sweat and struggle and strain as you create higher, deeper versions of your most essential relationships. Please remember this, though: The hard labor you engage in should be fueled by your ingenuity and your creative imagination. Play and experiment and enjoy yourself as you sweat and struggle and strain!
