Forever grateful

Annual Report of Giving 2024

Our mission is to treat and care for all our patients and their families as we would a beloved family member.

On the cover: Christine Squeri, RN, nurse director, and Suad Yihdego, RN, are part of the care team on 6 West. For every nurse at NWH, the learning never stops—and they all play a part in educating the new generation of nurses. Philanthropic support of professional development enables us to provide the best possible patient care.

Celebrating your generosity

Dear Friends,

As a hospital family, we all have so much to celebrate and be grateful for.

In sharing this Annual Report of Giving, we celebrate and honor your generosity throughout 2024. Again, we extend our deepest thanks for your partnership and vision.

Year after year, your belief in Newton-Wellesley lifts and sustains us. Your invaluable support helps make us not only one of the top hospitals in Greater Boston but also one of “America’s Best.”

Together, as leaders in the hospital’s philanthropy, you enable us to invest in every facet of our excellence—from our extraordinary team to the latest medical advances to vital community initiatives.

We all hear so many touching stories of what NWH means to family, friends, and neighbors. In the pages that follow, several of your fellow donors poignantly share what inspires their support.

You each have your own Newton-Wellesley stories. You’ve seen for yourself how our amazing caregivers go above and beyond. You understand the far-reaching impact of our hospital.

We hope you also take to heart your impact. Simply put, your gifts change lives.

For generations, we’ve been here for our neighbors, providing healing and hope in their moments of need. With your devoted support, we know that even greater things are ahead.

Thank you for all of the ways you contribute to Newton-Wellesley.

Kindest regards,

Ellen Moloney President & COO, Newton-Wellesley Hospital

We have you to thank

Dear Friends,

Every day at Newton-Wellesley, I see the profound impact of your gifts.

In this pivotal moment, your steadfast support has helped us stay true to our mission and lead the way in providing expert, compassionate care close to home. And I could not be more grateful.

Thanks to you, 2024 was another incredibly strong year in philanthropy. You joined our most loyal and generous supporters in contributing more than $8.5 million in gifts and pledges.

Your gifts—more than 2,800 in all—showed us again how deeply you care about this hospital and our role in the health and well-being of your neighbors. Along with hundreds of repeat donors, we welcomed 931 new contributors, enlarging our community of support.

Every gift makes a world of difference.

Importantly, at a time when many hospitals have cut or reduced services, we remain focused on advancing our clinical capabilities. We’re investing in key staff and cutting-edge technology to stay on the forefront of care—from cardiology to orthopedics to emergency medicine. Across the community, we’re extending our reach to meet people where they are. Your support helps make it all possible.

Thank you for believing in Newton-Wellesley and giving so generously.

Gratefully yours,

Katie Connolly, MBA

We all have a part to play

To Alicia Abad, healthcare is fundamental to strong, thriving communities.

Newton-Wellesley has always been there for her own family. From her children’s births to emergency care for her mom, “I’ve never had anything but amazing experiences,” she recounts.

She devotes herself to the hospital in return, including chairing the Substance Use Services Council of our Community Collaborative. “Substance use is something we are all touched by,” she understands.

Through the Collaborative, Newton-Wellesley sends a powerful message: “We care about you. We care about your family, your health, and your well-being.”

By stepping up as a voice for fundraising, Alicia sends a message as well. “I care about this hospital, and I want people to see how important it is to me.”

“There are so many ways to help,” she adds. She supports not only Substance Use Services but also the Emergency Department’s role as a lifeline for those with behavioral health issues.

When it comes to philanthropy, “we all have a part to play, and we can all make a difference.”

Beyond blessed

Jimmy and Beth Eisenstein will be forever grateful to their “dream team” of physicians.

Immediately after his diagnosis with stage 1A pancreatic cancer in 2021, the world-class team of Larry Blaszkowsky, MD, Ted Hong, MD, and Motaz Qadan, MD, went into action. Ned Legare, MD, his longtime PCP, orchestrated the connection and “stood with us every step of the way.” Together, “they saved my life,” Jimmy says simply.

The couple chose Newton-Wellesley because it “provides a personal touch that larger institutions can’t match,” Beth reflects. At the Mass General Cancer Center here, every staff member showed the same extraordinary care and compassion.

During Jimmy’s treatment, the couple’s own compassion inspired them to address barriers to care faced by fellow patients. They chose to fund more comprehensive patient support at NWH— helping with everything from transportation to meals to medical supplies. They also funded the purchase of iPads and TVs to ease patients’ experience.

To honor the four doctors, they made special gifts to initiatives across Mass General Brigham, including an endowed chair and fellowship as well as clinical programs and research. “We’re beyond blessed,” they add. “It’s our joy and privilege to support the doctors who stood with us.”

The gift of family health

For three decades across the full spectrum of life, “Newton-Wellesley has kept us healthy,” Cynthia Westerman reflects.

She and husband Bill have counted on NWH as their family hospital—from the births of their three sons to routine check-ups to end-of-life care for her mother. Every encounter reminds her of the empathy and respect that sets our staff apart.

“We’ve always, always enjoyed the same amazing level of care,” she says. “So I just want to give back for all it’s given us.”

She gratefully counts Newton-Wellesley as one of her top philanthropic priorities, joining her husband in supporting its ongoing excellence through the 1881 Pillar Society.

Cynthia generously gives of her time and talents as well. Along with serving on the hospital’s Board of Advisors, she now chairs the Palliative Care Council of NWH’s Community Collaborative. She relishes the opportunity to lead and to learn.

The more involved she becomes, the more she realizes the hospital’s impact. She knows what its thorough, authentic care means not only to her family but also to everyone across the community.

The rewards of giving back

“The harder you work, the greater the reward.” Marilyn Newman credits her dad, Bob Sheinkopf, with instilling that value in everyone at Yale Appliance, her family’s century-old business.

“But the biggest reward,” she learned, “is when you get to a point where you can give back.”

To celebrate 100 years, the company launched a campaign to do just that: to give back to the people and communities that have embraced them.

Newton-Wellesley is one of the beneficiaries. The Yale Appliance Foundation made a gift to establish an endowed fund to support nursing education at NWH. “The one thing you can’t put a price on is the value of education,” notes Marilyn, who heads the company’s charitable arm.

It’s a gift with special meaning to her. In raising her own family, she valued the human dimension of Newton-Wellesley’s care, and it’s still a place close to her heart.

Marilyn grew up in the family business, working with her parents and generations of relatives. Now she sees its 225 employees as an extended family. As Yale has grown, their shared commitment to service has made the local business a community institution.

“I want to make sure that everything we do makes a difference,” she says.

Two transformative grants

We are deeply grateful to the Yawkey Foundation for their support of two transformative initiatives at Newton-Wellesley. First, their funding has significantly enhanced our psychiatric inpatient unit. This grant created a therapeutic outdoor space that incorporates nature and art to foster a healing environment. Additionally, the Foundation has supported our Child Life team and Buddy, our facility dog, by establishing a dedicated outdoor area for Buddy to rest, recharge, and play.

Empowering healthy choices

“In critical situations, we’ve always been very well taken care of by Newton-Wellesley,” Jim and Carol Gildea reflect.

Living nearby, they’d visited the Emergency Department countless times when their kids were young. A recent ED visit reminded them why “this hospital is a gem.” What Jim suspected to be a bout of food poisoning turned out to be a bowel obstruction requiring immediate surgery.

They’re grateful for his ED and surgical teams’ extraordinary competence and care—and that Jim’s alive and well.

Inspired to find a way to express their appreciation, they chose to establish a new fund at NWH targeting a need close their hearts, the Gildea Family Fund for Education and Healthful Living.

Their gift supports nutrition education, in part through the creation of cooking demonstration videos. Its proactive vision aligns with Jim’s personal journey to healthier food choices.

They trace their own generosity to the example of Jim’s late father, whose philanthropic legacy lives on through a charitable foundation for which they serve as trustees.

As a family, “we are just truly blessed,” they add. “So we’re trying to give back any way we can.”

Create your own legacy of giving

The Eliza P. Kendall Society celebrates a storied tradition of patients and friends creating a legacy of giving at Newton-Wellesley.

Today, by remembering NWH in their estate plans, visionary donors like you are advancing world-class care, right here in our community. We’d love to welcome you into the Society.

If you’ve yet to create an estate plan, we can help you get started on a plan that conveys your wishes and explore creative gift strategies that can benefit you and your community hospital.

To learn more, please contact Susan Salcetti, Director of Gift Planning, at ssalcetti@mgb.org, or visit giftplanning.nwh.org.

To leave the world a better place

Ultimately, Joel Goldstein and Reed Goodman hope their gifts to Newton-Wellesley will send a message to future generations: “Somebody cared.”

Partners for 43 years and married since 2015, Joel and Reed care deeply. They approach giving as they do life—together, thoughtfully, and with profound generosity.

After entrusting NWH with his health for decades, a serious medical challenge facing Reed has spurred a more powerful connection. During Reed’s treatment for stage four lung cancer, they’ve both marveled at the staff’s kindness and commitment.

Since his diagnosis, “our sense of the future has shifted,” Reed says. While optimistic, they view time through a new lens. They embrace each day and focus their energy on things that matter.

Their annual and planned gifts to NWH will preserve one of the places most important to them. When a cherished local institution provides great care, “you need to take care of it,” they believe. They both grew up in families with modest means and a strong belief in giving. They learned early on to offer support and recognize those who help others. When they think about their legacy, “we both share a desire to leave the world a better place,” they reflect.

An eventful year

Gala raises $1 million for NWH Community Collaborative

At the 2024 Gala, more than 500 guests celebrated all that Newton-Wellesley means to them and to the communities they call home. Held May 3 at Boston’s Intercontinental Hotel, the event inspired more than $1 million in support of our Community Collaborative. Highlights included Michael S. Jellinek, MD, former NWH president and Collaborative co-founder, receiving the inaugural Community Champion Award.

Golfers contribute to healthier future

More than 120 golfers joined us for the NWH Golf Tournament in September 2024 at the Wellesley Country Club. Together, they helped raise more than $227,000 in support of our Workforce Development Council’s summer student internship program.

Celebrating Team NWH

Newton-Wellesley Hospital was honored to be a member of the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program and fielded a team of 10 charity runners in the 128th Boston Marathon in April 2024. 2024 Team NWH raised over $115,000 in support of hospital programs and services.

A dream come true

In 2024, “the stars aligned,” reflects Adina Taylor. As part of Team NWH, she not only fulfilled her dream of running the Boston Marathon but gratefully supported an institution she cares deeply about.

While runners often focus on the finish line, Adina counted down the miles to Newton-Wellesley. At Mile 17, she knew her family and her hospital fans were waiting. “That was the boost that I needed.”

Since moving to Newton with her husband and growing family, “we’ve wanted to actually be a part of this community instead of just living here,” she says. Joining NWH’s Board of Advisors has given her a great way to get involved. “It lets me be an ambassador for our hospital and support its amazing work.”

A mom of four, Adina gave birth to her youngest two at NWH after their move. She chose Maternity Services to benefit from her marathon fundraising—and raised 175% of her goal!

Running for a cause was one more way to live out her values. “I hope to show my kids how rewarding it can be to set a personal goal and work hard to accomplish it,” she says.

2024 Leadership Donor Celebration

The 2024 Leadership Donor Celebration provided an ideal opportunity to give thanks to our most generous supporters for all of the ways they contribute to Newton-Wellesley’s excellence. Photos from the November gathering at the Wellesley Country Club reflect the spirit of joy and gratitude.

Every gift makes a difference

Thank you again for your incredibly generous support of Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

As meaningful as your gifts are to you, please know how much they mean to the individuals and families that we serve. With every gift, you also lift the spirits of our amazing staff by being there for them at crucial moments.

Your gifts took many forms, each with powerful impact.

Your annual support of the NWH Fund gave our family of caregivers the flexibility to meet our patients’ most urgent needs. Gifts to capital projects allowed us to enhance and maintain our facilities while also investing in state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that our patients receive the safest, highest quality care close to home. Endowment gifts provide stability and sustainability to programs that are key to the present and future health and wellbeing of our community.

As always, gifts of every size made a difference. Through every dimension of your support, you truly made this your community hospital. We’re grateful for your ongoing partnership.

A note to our community of supporters
