Long Valley Third Grader Cooks Her Way To Chopped Jr. Show By Ann Marie Barron A nine-year-old aspiring chef from Long Valley fulfilled a personal dream earlier this month by appearing in a television cooking show, competing for a chance to serve as a Food Network judge.

Olivia Acosta appeared March 8 on, “Chopped, Jr., Make Me a Judge,” a kid-friendly version of the popular show, “Chopped,’’ where participant chefs are asked to come up with recipes on the fly, using surprise ingredients.

Olivia survived the first two rounds, producing an appetizer and an entrée. She was eliminated in the dessert round, with the competition narrowed to just two aspiring judges. A third grader at the Benedict A. Cucinella Elementary School, Olivia learned her fate during the filming in December, but was sworn to secrecy until the show aired. She spent three days, or three rounds, filming in Manhattan with three other contestants. After each round, which required the four contestants to create either an appetizer, entrée or a dessert, one contestant is “chopped.’’ After the third round, the winner is presented with $10,000 and a chef coat. The contestants were charged with creating dishes with very unusual ingredients. After creating a burger salad with pickle cream dressing for an appetizer, Olivia explained: “I

thought a burger was pretty obvious and I wanted to think outside the bun.’’ She also created a burger kebob with cheese and shallot cream sauce and a dessert burger with a French toast bun. Ground venison, quail eggs, pickle pops, shallot marmalade, Texas toast, Sharon fruit, candied bacon and chocolate marshmallow cereal treats all made appearances in the inspiring ingredient lists. While competing on the show, Olivia – who was the youngest competitor in a group that ranged in age from nine to 13 – said she felt challenged by having to cook with unfamiliar ingredients and with very little time to prepare. “When I saw those ingredients, I only knew what one of them was,’’ she recalled. “I got really nervous. I was cooking really fast. It’s the fastest I’ve ever cooked. I’ve never been timed before.’’

Active 79-Year Old Hikes To Local Libraries To Share Appalachian Trail Experience

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta wo years ago, Mike Venus hiked the Appalachian Trail and has been sharing his memories by speaking at local libraries, including the Montville Township Library on Jan. 12, and the Chester Library on Jan. 31. Venus called the lectures “fun talks” and said he attracted “people of all walks of life” including other active hikers who showed interest in hiking the Appalachian Trail and coming to hear what he had to say. “My talk is always the same,” said Venus, who gives information on the Appalachian Trail history. The trail is about 2,200

T

miles long and passes through 14 states: Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Venus started walking the trail on March 22, 2015, and finished on September 16, 2015. He was on the trail 150 days, walking more than 14 miles per day. He left the trail twice to take some days off to fly out to a graduation in California, and another in N.J. There were also days he didn’t hike at all. “Hikers call those ‘zero days,’” he said. “Now and then you need a little break.”

All in all, he actually walked or hiked 150 days and said that at the age of 77, he was the fourth oldest of all who hiked the trail. Venus and his wife, who live in Sparta, have been hikers all their lives. But nevertheless, preparation was still necessary prior to his Appalachian Trail hike. “Everybody has to condition themselves,” he said. “My son and his family live with us. I’d take the dog for a walk every day, five miles. Sparta is mountainous. Three to six months prior to the [Appalachian] hike, I’d take a walk with a thirty-pound backpack and get used to it. It’s very hilly, so if you do three to five miles, it’s good; gets you in good shape.”

What’s In Your Back Yard?

In addition to his training at home, Venus went to a boot camp in Tennessee called the Appalachian Trail Institute. “You have lectures on how to prepare for a hike,

what kind of boots to get, keep your pack light, get used to being wet; it’s like a military camp,” Venus said. “When I started [the Appalachian hike] I was in as good preparation as

you could be. A lot of the younger fellows were in better shape.” He continued. “The secret is to start early in the day and hike as long as you continued on next page

Did You Know?

f you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motor-

ized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, in-

crease endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics.

Local Woman Is Looking For A Special Angel

By Elsie Walker uzanne Sanders of Long Valley describes her friend, Tori Reade, as “empathetic, loving, fun, and the most organized mom I’ve ever met.” Reade, also of Long Valley, has two daughters, nine-year old Erin and sixyear old Hayden, and a husband named Rich. Sanders and Reade, met when their older daughters became friends and then their own friendship grew. Now Sanders is one of “Tori’s Angels,” a nickname that Reade gave a group of friends who have been at her side as she battles Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer. However, Reade needs some more angels. A fundraising GoFund-

S

me page to help Reade with medical and related expenses has been set up at https:// www.gofundme.com/torisbattle. Also, as part of her treatment, Reade needs a stem cell transplant which requires finding a donor match. “Be The Match” events, at which cheek swabs are taken, are being set up to help find that donor for Reade. Recent events have been in Hackettstown with more in the works at other locations. In addition, people can go online to bethematch.org, promo code 4torisbattle, and find out about being a donor. Sanders noted that Reade “always had a ‘thing’ for angels” which is how “Tori’s Angels” jokingly came

to be the nickname for the close friends helping Reade. “Everyone who has shown support through the GoFundme, her food train, the Be The Match donor drive, or in any other way are all her ‘angels,’” says Sanders. Diagnosed in Oct. 2016, treatment of Reade’s condition requires not only the use of her own stem cells, but also those of a donor. As explained on Reade’s GoFundme page: Multiple Myeloma “is a form of blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow. A common result of Multiple Myeloma is kidney damage, and for Tori, was how this was first identified.” Treatment started with Reade receiving dialysis three days a week to help

with her kidneys. In addition to that, she received cycles of chemotherapy treatments and steroids to attack the cancer. The page goes on to say that “When her treatment hit a plateau in December, it was decided to go ahead with a stem cell transplant.” She has already had a transplant from herself, an Autologous transplant and now, the second step would be the transplant of stem cells from a donor: an Allogeneic transplant. Saunders explained why they are looking for a match outside the family: “Parents and children in situations like these are only 50 percent matches and their ages make them not viable for an individual like Tori.” The Be A Match website explains that the preference

is for donors ages 18-44. Ages 45 to age 60 can register, but only online. Individuals can go to the Be A Match site to learn more about using Peripheral Blood Stem Cells (PBSC) to fight Multiple Myeloma and what happens if they are

cont. from previous page and that is 4torisbattle. A cheek swab kit will be sent to them. Alternately, people ages 18-44 can have their cheeks swabbed at a one of the match events for Tori. Locally, match events have already been held at Centenary College and at the Czig Meister Brewery. In January, the women’s lacrosse team at Centenary ran an event as they knew of the need through one of the “angels,” Nora Tufford. The “Have Beer, Save a Life” event was held at the end of February. “Czig Meister graciously allowed us to use their facility and a number of local food establishments donated food. The Long Valley Brew Pub, Valley Restaurant, L&J Catering, Hong Kong Palace, Pandan Room, Topo, Marley’s, Ma-

ma’s Cafe, and Center Stage Cakes all donated. [Tori’s] father gave swabbers a drink ticket and paid the tab, and the amazing brewery was at their disposal. A Be The Match representative was also in attendance walking us through the entire registration/swabbing process. We did have people just donate money to the family and friends of Tori’s from work were selling ‘Believe’ bracelets. Unused proceeds from those sales will be donated to the Multiple Myeloma Research foundation (themmrf.org),” shared Saunders. People can also read more about Tori’s type of cancer on that site. Locally, future Be A Match events are in the works with possible locations being in Newton and Lake Mohawk. A cousin of Tori’s is planning one in

Belmar on May 13. Other ways to help Tori can be found on the GoFundme page that has been set up for her: https://www. gofundme.com/torisbattle. The page includes updates on Tori and a way to donate money and shares other ideas for helping her family during this difficult time. “If you want to do something, but are unsure of what, you can also send them a gift card for lunch after treatment or Dunkin Donuts or whatever you’d like. Regardless, Tori and Rich will certainly appreciate it. You can email contact.torisbattle@gmail.com for an address,” the page shares. Tori Reade has angels, but is looking for a special one, that one that will be her match. All it takes is a cheek swab to see.

Acorn Hall Exhibit Pays Tribute To Morris County WWI Contributions

By: J.L. Shively new exhibit featured throughout Acorn Hall opened on Sun., Feb. 19 in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the United States entry into World War I which took place on April 6, 1917. The exhibit is entitled “1917: World War, Women’s Rights, and Weaponry Sciences,” and will be on display at the Morris County Historical Society’s Headquarters, the historic Acorn Hall until June. “We wanted to incorporate as many aspects of what was going on in 1917 as possible,” said Nicole Rizzuto, curator of Exhibits and Research with MCHS.

There was much more going on than just the war in that year. “The year was the impetus of decision,” Rizzuto states, while elaborating on the fact that U.S. entrance into the war sparked many other movements which had already been smoldering. The inspiration behind the exhibit therefore is not

only the war but focuses on local women’s rights movements and Morris County contributions to weaponry sciences which helped aide the U.S. in strategic movements of the war. According to a press release “the exhibit honors the men and women who gave their lives during the war, highlights the cul-

during WWI. Roberts was a nurse from Madison. Along with other period appropriate clothing the exhibit features artifacts from WWI throughout every room of Acorn Hall. A WWI uniform is on display including camp material on loan from the Butler Museum and Historical Committee. A pop tent is featured along with a medical bag from the MCHS collection. The idea behind the exhibit with a mixture of war artifacts intermixed with everyday items is meant to show “how different things affected different aspects of people’s lives,” states Rizzuto. To showcase Morris County’s contribution

to the war effort when it came to weaponry Acorn Hall has dedicated space to Hudson Maxim, who worked on smokeless gunpowder and other technology advances the country needed to win WWI. There is also a photo of Dr. Guy Otis Brewster, whose Brewster-Heller Armor was a first attempt at making bullet proof vests. The photo shows Brewster demonstrating at Picatinny Arsenal. “I’m really excited about it [the exhibit],” states Rizzuto, who has done extensive research on these subjects. She goes on to explain that this exhibit, “shows how much Morris County impacted the rest of the world.”

Rizzuto explains how easy it is for locals to forget just how much local history can impact the world. The exhibit can be viewed while Acorn Hall is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Group tours of eight or more can be arranged by reservation. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors $3 for students and free for children under the age of 12 and for MCHS members. Prescribe Drugs or Worse Yet, Surgery!

T

he Physician learns that disease must be cured by prescribing drugs or by surgery. Although there is nothing inherently wrong with this approach. It often works. But why does Chinese Medicine succeed where conventional Western medicine sometimes fails? What is it about Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine that can result in relief of symptoms, helping couples conceive when they were told there is no hope, or even a cure that is often lacking in conventional Western Medicine? Although the ultimate result of Chinese Medicine is to cure the patient, the Practitioner of Chinese

N

experiences, eating habits, work habits, work and living environment, personal habits, and social network all contribute to their disease, and are factors that, when changed, may lead to regained health. The power and effectiveness of Chinese Medicine is evidenced by its very long history of over 3,000 years of continued practice and success. Did you know that more than ¼ of the world’s population uses some form of alternative medicine as their health care treatment? Chinese Medicine however, is the only form of alternative medicine that has been regularly and continuously used outside of its country

of origin. The experienced Chinese medical practitioner is trained to observe one’s tone of voice, complexion, eyes, facial expression, overall demeanor, and how one walks, sits and stands, and to use these observations along with a detailed health history to arrive at a diagnosis. Before the patient says one word, the practitioner already has some idea of who this person is, clinically, simply by observing them. A great Practitioner is one who can process a mix of medical knowledge with a personal sensitivity based on experience. The practitioner of Chinese medicine

specializes not just in inserting needles or prescribing herbal remedies, but in being able to see “hidden” or subtle conditions that may not be seen or understood by Western trained Doctors. The ability to see these subtle conditions takes years of training and is done without the benefit of modern technology. How many of you reading this had or do have pain, or are unable to conceive but all your test results are negative? Many of these types of patient’s are given anti-depressants and are made to feel that their pain is all in their head. The only diagnostic tools used by Practitioners of Chinese Medicine are the “Four

Examinations.” 1. Observing, 2. Listening/Smelling, 3. Questioning, and 4. Palpating. This method of diagnosis dates back over 3,000 years. Each of these examinations can take years to master and the intelligent and judicious Practitioner uses them to arrive at a differential diagnosis. At Skyland’s Acupuncture, I have over 29 years of Experience with treating a myriad of patients and utilizing the diagnostic tools described above. Understanding Health Savings Accounts

avigating health insurance plans can be confusing. One health insurance product that’s relatively easy to understand is a health savings account, or HSA. This type of account can help account holders save money on the costs associated with their healthcare.

Deborah Waddell, Dipl. Ac., C.A.

medicine attempts to do this by treating the whole person, taking into account the various attributes of an individual that, when combined, account for an individual’s health status. A person, according to the tenets of Chinese Medicine, is more than their condition. To treat just the condition may yield some results, but, however impressive, these results are usually temporary. People are not, according to Chinese Medicine, represented solely by their illness, but by the culmination of every human interaction engaged in from the moment of their birth and by the culture they are exposed to. The emotional

What is an HSA? HSAs are like any other savings account, except they can be used for medical, vision and dental expenses. HSAs are tax-advantaged, meaning that income can be deposited into an HSA before it is taxed. HSAs can only be opened and used in conjunction with a high-de-

ductible health insurance plan, or those with a deductible of at least $1,300 for an individual or $2,600 for a family. HSA details and eligibility requirements Although HSAs have contribution limits, they’re advantageous in that the savings accumulated can be

used to pay for noncovered, qualified medical expenses, such as copays, vision and dental care and even deductibles. HSAs may be established through an employer-sponsored insurance plan or through a bank or other financial institution. To qualify, a person must be

under the age of 65 and have a high-deducible health insurance plan. What are the advantages and disadvantages of HSAs? There are advantages and disadvantages to HSAs. HSA account holders can control how their saved money is spent, and there’s no risk of losing the money at the end of the year because it rolls over. Taxes are not paid on money going into the HSA. In addition, employers can contribute to HSAs, and account holders do not lose their balances when they change jobs. Disadvantages include the challenge of setting aside money to put into the HSA, especially if finances are tight. One who has certain medical situations that are urgent may find that

budgeting for an HSA is impractical. A retirement saving vehicle In addition to the other benefits mentioned, HSAs can be used as a way to invest in retirement. The resource NerdWallet, which offers financial tools and objective advice to help people understand their options and make the best possible decisions, says an HSA is a good retirement savings option, especially for high-income earners who can’t make deductible contributions to a traditional IRA or any contributions to a Roth IRA. HSAs can help offset healthcare costs and even help with long-term financial planning.

Buds To Blossoms Family Enrichment Center Opens

new agency Buds to Blossoms Family Enrichment Center serving families and children with social/emotional and developmental disabilities has opened in Long Valley. The main goal is to help bridge the gap in services which are available. There are many programs for students who are in Transition or 21 and older but few services for our youth in our community. It is my belief that services should start earlier and should last throughout development, states the Pamela Hamilton the owner and operator of Buds to Blossoms Family Enrichment Center. Family/ Individual and group counseling are available to help with family conflict, acceptance, self-esteem, depression, anxiety and behaviors.

Social programs are designed to empower each individual, teach life skills through activities, develop peer relationships and strengthen families. Some of the programs available are; Enhanced after school program for youth who have trouble fitting in, Saturday Group for youth and teens who will benefit from learning life and social skills in the office and out in the community, Sibling Group-for kids growing up with a sibling with special needs and Teen night-Gives your teen a healthy place to go and socialize as well as getting out in the community and Day transition program-For the misplaced 18 and up population. This program gives a safe place to go during the day at the same time to learn life skills

and about the next step in life . Many “tweens” who feel like they are just not fitting in or anxious about middle school have begun individual counseling and have joined one of the social groups. Families do not need to be alone. Our children are developing younger which brings everyday life issues earlier. What makes our after-school program “enhanced”? We offer a healthy snack, complete homework and provide an interactive activity for our students. At the same time your child will build healthy relationship skills, and learn how to work with others. If your child or family is struggling, please check our website budstoblossomsfec. com or call Pamela Hamilton at 908-867-2964.

Find Better Balance For Family Meals This Year

et a realistic resolution to take time to sit down with your family and eat balanced meals together. A few simple solutions and a dash of inspiration are all you need to set the tone for a year of health and wellness. Last year, Americans were only meeting the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate recommendations for vegetables, fruit, protein, dairy and grain consumption one week out of the entire year. While many families try to cook nutritious meals at home, a balanced plate

can be hard to achieve. Educational programs, such as NestlÈ’s Balance Your Plate, make it simple to create delicious and balanced meals by pairing frozen prepared meals and pizzas with made-fromscratch side dishes, which makes meeting the dietary guidelines a more attainable goal. Frozen entrees are a convenient starting point for a well-rounded meal. “It’s so important to me that we sit down as a family and have a nutritious meal,” said Kim Stoegbauer, creative director

River Cruise ships tend to look alike from the outside, but look closer and you’ll see they are really quite different. Starting with the view, because cruisers have told us that nothing is more important than that. And that is where we are very different than everybody else.

Library Programs In March And April

W

ashington Township Public Library in Long Valley has a full schedule of events planned for March and April. On Sat., March 25, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., come out for NJ Makers Day, a statewide celebration of maker culture that emphasizes the importance – and fun – of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). The library has a host of events planned for the whole family, including: A Sphero robot demonstration, art projects, felting, Legos, seed planting, food crafts, a drone demonstration, a lecture on NJ’s most famous maker – Thomas Edison – by an archivist at Edison National Historical Park, and more. A full schedule is available on the library’s website, wtpl.org. On Tues., March 28 at 7 p.m., the library will offer “Gardening in the Shade.” Got shade? Not a problem! Discover the potential of the shaded areas in the yard and create appealing, low maintenance gardens in the shade. This presentation offers ideas and information on planning, planting and maintaining beautiful gardens to lighten up those shady spots. Plant sug-

gestions including trees, shrubs, perennials, ground covers and annuals will be discussed and included in the handouts that will be provided. On Thur., March 30 at 7 p.m., the library will welcome Dr. Gillian Hettinger for “Poldark in Print and on Screen,” a celebration of all things Poldark, from the original novels by Winston Graham to the current BBC show. Discover the true stories behind the history, books and characters of Graham’s beloved saga. Uncover the passion behind the people bringing his novels to life, with their unforgettable characters, gripping story, fiery passions and stunning scenery. Dig deep into the history of Cornwall and discover what makes Ross Poldark an unforgettable hero. Hettinger is an adjunct professor of English at William Patterson University. On Wed., April 5 at 6:30 p.m., the library will screen the first film in its new monthly environmental film series. “Rescuing the River: The Raritan” (2012) tells the story of New Jersey’s Raritan River, a water source profoundly contaminated for over 200 years, and the extraordinary efforts

to clean it up. The film will be followed with a Q&A with Bill Kibler, director of Public Policy at the Raritan Headwaters Association. On Mon., April 10, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., the library will host a Small Business Workshop to educate local business owners and entrepreneurs about starting and registering businesses in the state. This workshop includes: types of business ownership; registering a business; reporting business income; meeting employer responsibilities; understanding sales and use tax. The workshop will be led by representatives of the NJ Division of Taxation’s Taxation University. On Tues., April 18 at 7 p.m., the library will present “How to Grow and Preserve Culinary Herbs.” Why pay the high prices of grocery store culinary herbs when they can easily be home grown? Learn how to grow a multitude of different herbs both perennial and annual either from seeds or plants and different methods of preserving herbs to last throughout the winter. There is no charge for any of the programs, but registration is requested online at wtpl.org or by calling the library at 908-876-3596.

ou may think of your bathroom as a relaxing oasis. Unfortunately, bathrooms are actually the site of 200,000 injuries annually nationwide, according to the National Safety Council. These incidents happen to people of all ages -- from young children who may see the bathroom as a play area, to expecting women whose balance may be off kilter, to seniors. You can reduce the risk of falling by adding grab bars near the toilet, along the showerhead wall and on the back wall of the tub or shower. Grab bars also provide assistance for getting in and out of the tub,
