Community Gardens Open Their Gates To The Public

W

By Catherine Bialkowski and Jessica Jones hat better way to spend a weekend than at a local garden, tasting freshly-picked fruits and vegetables and bonding over the sense of community? The Morris County Park Commission and the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum planned to host a free Open Gates Weekend on July 15 and 16 to demonstrate the beauty of the county’s greenery and let guests of all ages engage with nature and with each other. This is Open Gates

Weekend’s second year. Participating this year are the Morris County Park Commission Community Garden, Interfaith Food Pantry Garden, Early Street Community Garden, Morris Township Ted Largman Community Garden at ValleVue Preserve, Madison Community Garden, Washington Township Community Garden, the community garden at South Branch Preserve, Roxbury Community Garden, Pequannock Township Community Garden and Florham Park Community Garden. According to Cynthia Triolo, manager at the

commission’s own community garden, last year’s event saw great success, with more than 200 people in attendance, despite the “terrible weather.” “It was unanimous among the participating gardens that we should make it an annual event,” she said. “Visitors were amazed at what was growing in the gardens and also by how beautiful they were.” The showcase would not be complete without an array of free samples taken directly from the gardens themselves. “One of the gardens did a potluck, one did a salsa tasting, one did a tomato tasting,” Triolo said, referring to last year’s Open Gates. “Others gave away seedlings of chard and kale; others gave seeds; one had music. Every garden offered something different.” This year, visitors expected similar giveaways. The commission’s deci-

sion to host this event was based on a passion for not only gardening, but on fostering a sense of community and a healthy lifestyle. “Community gardens are important for many reasons,” Triolo said, listing the benefits. “They bring a sense of community to their location. They promote healthy food. They lower our carbon footprint. They also foster bonds of friendship and support.

Children learn where their food comes from and what it takes to grow your own. They also create a green space that filters rainwater and restores oxygen to the air.” Barbara McCloskey, the garden manager at the South Branch Preserve Community Garden, gave an example of the sense of community at her garden, saying that the picnic tables seem to be the most popular part because they allow the gardeners to get some shade and talk to one another. Community gardens allow freedom to experiment when growing different vegetables. They give gardeners access to seeing firsthand where their food is grown and to know that it comes from a safe, familiar

place. “There is nothing like the taste of totally fresh, organically grown vegetables,” said McCloskey. “Since you pick out your seeds or plants, you also have the opportunity to grow different varieties of vegetables that are not usually found in the supermarkets.” Additionally, each of the community gardens donates a portion of what’s grown there to a local food pantry. “Many have garden plots that are dedicated to giving, and wonderful volunteers who tend the plots and deliver the produce,” said Triolo. “In the past two years, the Morris County Park Commission’s community garden donated continued on page 2

Every week during the summer they set up coolers where gardeners are able to donate their excess vegetables, herbs and even fresh flowers. Community gardens are perfect for those who have a green thumb but have nowhere to use it. “The residents are thrilled to have a place to plant, as many either live in apartments, have too much shade or there are too many animals in their yards to be able to properly grow vegetables,” said McCloskey. Sal Internicola, who has a plot at South Branch Preserve, calls gardening “a lot

of work, but fun.” His own garden at home, he said, doesn’t get enough sunlight. A community garden nearby- filled with tomatoes, beets, peas, lettuce, and various herbs - was the perfect solution. “It’s relaxing, and I’ve learned a lot from the other gardeners.” The same goes for Dick Spaedt, another gardener at South Branch. “I heard about it in the newspaper a few years ago,” Spaedt said. “I’ve been here since day one.” Day one, for the South Branch Preserve, took place in 2013. The community garden is in its fifth year of business - and has nearly doubled in size since the beginning. “We have potluck dinners and a seed exchange; a few times, master garden-

ers came from Rutgers to talk to us,” Spaedt said, offering a look into the activities that come with being a community gardener. There are countless opportunities for those who want to get involved. And these events do not only take place at South Branch - each of the gardens has offerings of its own, to enhance skills and encourage social interaction. Whether someone is a master gardener looking for a place to hone their craft or a novice looking for a place to grow their own produce, a community garden could become a new home. With a prominent sense of community and growth (literally and figuratively), a community garden can foster creativity, awareness and a love for the earth.

Waldo Creates Summertime Adventure For Madison Kids

here’s Waldo? In Madison, of course! The iconic children’s book character in the striped shirt and blackrimmed specs is visiting 25 Madison businesses throughout July. Find Waldo Local is a summer vacation activity and a way to encourage support of local businesses and the Shop Local movement in Madison. Through the end of the month, anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Madison, N.J.,” passport at Short Stories Bookshop, which contains the names of all the participating sites, and get their passport stamped or signed for each Waldo they spot. There is

no charge to participate. Collecting store stamps or signatures at 20 or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers entry into a grand-prize drawing on July 29, with the top prize being a six-volume deluxe set of Waldo books. Waldos will be hiding in the following locations: The Madison Farmer’s Market, Short Stories Bookshop & Community Hub, Satellite Games, Tons of Toys, The Madison Area YMCA, Madison PhotoPlus, McCool’s Ice Cream Parlour, Madison Mud, Provident Bank, Chaise Fitness, Salvatore Minardi Salon, The Hat Shop of Madison, Dr. Sam Romano, The Madison Pharmacy, Fulton Bank, The Max Challenge, Ad-

ams Dental, PC Problems, Gerlach’s Jewlers, Studio Yoga, Beneath the Surface and The Eyeglass Shoppe. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Where’s Waldo? books. Martin Handford’s collections of crowd scenes swept the world in the late ‘80s, and since then have held a cherished spot on bookstore shelves the world over. There are now more than 67 million Waldo books in print worldwide, and they’ve been translated into more than 30 languages. An entire generation has grown up searching for Waldo and his cast of wandering companions. To celebrate such a special milestone, Waldo’s friend, Wenda, will also be hiding

in Short Stories Bookshop. Once again, in celebration of Waldo’s longevity and popularity, his American publisher, Candlewick Press, is teaming up with

he Chatham High School Canavan Awareness Project recently launched its first-ever Canavan Awareness Day. Students and staff purchased t-shirts as a fundraiser for CAP and wore them as a means to spread

awareness and raise money to assist those impacted by Canavan Disease, an autosomal recessive degenerative disorder that causes progressive damage to the nerve cells in the brain. Chatham High School teachers Kaitlin Leyden and Kristi Froisland are

ARM PAIN and NUMBNESS: IT COULD BE YOUR SPINE

You’re familiar with the scenario and symptoms. Sometimes during the day, you notice that you get a tingling or burning sensation in your upper arm. Occasionally, you may notice it in your hand as well. After you write for a while or work on the computer, you notice your hand gets tingly and numb; sometimes even slightly painful. The tingling and numbness can come and go, but one thing is for sure: after you’ve slept, (especially when not in the best position), you wake up and your hand is almost completely numb. What causes this phenomenon? Most people, and even some doctors believe it’s caused by “poor circulation”. They think the “poor circulation” will cut off the blood flow while you’re sleeping and cause your hands to be numb in the morning. Others think they might have carpal tunnel syndrome or a problem within the arm itself. This most times is not the cause. What causes arm tingling, pain and numbness? Well, there can be many causes. Most of the time it is from irritation or “pinching” of a nerve where it passes from your neck down to the point it reaches your fingertips. Rarely is it caused by poor circulation inside your arm. We as chiropractors have long understood that most arm numbness, pain and tingling is caused by “pinching” of the nerve at the point it leaves your neck. In many cases, the person that has this problem doesn’t experience neck pain, only arm pain, numbness and tingling or hand numbness and tingling. One of the cardinal signs is the fact that after the person falls asleep and wakes up, the

numbness and tingling is much worse. At the Suburban Chiropractic Center, we take a very comprehensive approach in diagnosing and treating arm pain and numbness. We get excellent results from conditions that we can treat; conditions that require other medical attention are referred to appropriate specialists. Most cases of arm pain and numbness, however, have been treated successfully with chiropractic care without the use of drugs or surgery. How do you know whether or not your case of arm pain and numbness can be helped by chiropractic? The only way is through a comprehensive evaluation and assessment. Don’t continue to suffer with arm pain and numbness just chalking it up to poor circulation that occurs with age. Have yourself evaluated and see if you can be treated successfully as many have been with safe, effective, and painless chiropractic care. Dr. Joseph J. Murphy is a chiropractic physician and has been Director of the Suburban Chiropractic Center in Chatham for 33 years. He is the Past President of the New Jersey and Morris County Chiropractic Societies as well as the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. He is editor-in- chief of the Journal of Chiropractic, and lectures extensively throughout the area on holistic health related matters. For more information on conservative management of arm pain and numbness, call Dr Murphy at (973) 635-0036 or visit his website at www.drmurphy.com.

E

Why On Earth Would I List My House With Scott Spelker?

xcellent question. Let’s face it, there are a lot of choices out there. Everyone knows someone who is a real estate agent. Like most of the very BEST realtors, I do the following for my clients: 1) Professionally photograph the home. 2) Have a professional video done. 3) Create a designated website with interactive floor plans. (see www.265woodlandrd.com) 4) Design First Class brochures of the home. This is where it ends for most great agents, and where it just begins for me. I utilize Coldwell Banker Analytics, which is an algorithm that allows me to find the demographic that

is likely to move to your neighborhood. It allows me to search by household income, education level, and the town and county that is the best fit for your neighborhood and street. Next, I utilize Facebook’s “likely to move” feature allowing me to target advertise into these towns. It’s a powerful way to combine big data and advertising. Why advertise to a small local audience when I can reach thousands through Facebook Ads, in multiple towns and counties across the state? And remember, that is what you are hiring me to do! You are hiring me to provide superior marketing, which will drive the greatest number of potential buyers to see your

home! There is one other thing that I have to offer that is a true game changer for my clients. I am the ONLY Madison based agent that has the unique relationship with Zillow that allows me to have a video of my client’s home shown at the TOP of the Zillow page for (Madison, New Jersey real estate) 8,000 times a month!-guaranteed. Regardless of the price parameters someone types in, your home can be at the TOP of the page over 250 times per day! It is so important that your house is SEEN and this goes a long way to accomplishing that. There are typically 60-80 homes on the market in the Spring, so why have your home get lost
