Next Session Of Poetry And Pastries Brewing In Chatham
By Cheryl Conway ore than a dozen years ago, former Chatham resident Marcia Ivans met a friend at a local coffee shop who said “this might be a nice place for a poetry reading.” Ivans’ friend who writes poetry could not take on the venture, so Ivans, like the words on a page, decided to run with the idea.
Barbara Schmidt-Kemp “Your Hometown Realtor” “Barbara was so well organized and helped get our home ready to sell. We couldn’t have done it without her kind words and guidance. She went above and beyond what most agents have done”.

“So I went to the owner and said maybe I can start a poetry reading here,” recalls Ivans. “I said I can guarantee 10 people,” can set up in the back room. Café owner Andrew Copp agreed. Only five people showed up at her first poetry reading event. “We sat around at the table and read poetry,” and drank different flavored coffee and a variety of delicious homemade pastries and cakes. In its 13th year this September, Poetry and Pastries continues to meet at Café Beethoven in Chatham every other month, welcoming anywhere from 15 to 30 people who participate in open poetry reading. Ivans, who moved to Pompton Plains seven months ago after living in Chatham for 18 years, continues to facilitate the readings. Her mailing list has grown to 200 people over the years. The group meets from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on selected dates. “Thirteen years is a long time to keep it going on,” realizes Ivans, but driving 30 minutes is worth her favorite coffee flavors like hazelnut, the homemade carrot cake and mostly an array of wonderfully fresh poetry. “It’s the warm and welcoming feeling that people get,” says Ivans. “It’s worked out beautifully. I do this for the love of hearing other poets share their work.” Poetry and Pastries is “open to anyone who wishes to read their own poetry for up to five minutes,” explains Ivans. “Anyone who comes and signs up to read can read. I have poets who are reading for their first time and very accomplished poets. The variety is always quite interesting. There are several people who have come for years just to listen.” Men and women, young and old- the youngest reader was 10 and the oldest was 81- has participated in Ivans’ program. “People from all over,” travel to attend with one from Pennsylvania, another from south Jersey. Ivans set the limit to five minutes to allow writers to read anywhere from one to three poems “so everyone has a chance.” She also asks that readers present their own work. An encouraging aspect of the program is the encouragement received to the readers. The poets just read their poems, without criticism. “There is wonderful support for all those who attend,” says Ivans. “Whatever we read, we just applaud. It’s just
applause when you finish. It’s a very comfortable place to read. I also invite listeners. Whether I have very experience writers to those who never read to the public before, everyone gets the same applause, everyone gets the same chance. Everyone gets encouragement.”
Ivans says “it’s not rows of chairs; everyone is just sitting and drinking their coffee and eating their cake. It’s warm and welcoming. It’s that kind of atmosphere. It’s a great place. New writers; new readers without critiquing. It’s like a fun night.” To those new to reading their poems, “it gives people confidence.” For more experienced readers of poetry, “it’s a place to try out new poems.” The types of poetry vary from Haiku, to rhyming or free writing. “I love the variety of style,” she says. “I love to hear when new people come in; their new poetry. It’s a very warm and inviting environment.” The setting is the back room of Cafe Beethoven where people just sit around tables in a cafe setting. “People sit at any table they want. Writers make their own connections in the continued on page 4

Residents Urged To Vote At Upcoming Chatham School Referendum
By Anastasia Marchese n April of last year Chatham residents were asked to consider a $24.8 million dollar ballot referendum designed to update the schools’ facilities and to build new spaces for a variety of uses. The ballot issue was rejected so the Board of Education and administration were sent back to the drawing table to reconsider what Chatham residents want to see done in their district. Written in his “Superintendent’s Newsletter: September 2016,” Dr. Michael LaSusa, superintendent of schools explained, “Over the past eighteen months, our Board of Education and district administration have worked to elicit feedback from our community about prospective infrastructure projects, collaborated with district architects about the projects garnering the most support from the community, and submitted the draft project proposals to the Department of Education for approval. This lengthy process will culminate in a referendum vote to be held on Sept. 27 for six projects that the district believes to be vital to our infrastructure and to meet the
needs of current and future students.” Breaking the referendum issues up into six separate projects can help voters to understand the impact of each referendum and choose to support, or not, the proposed work of each. On the school district website is a short video in which LaSusa explains each project and the impact it will have on the students and community. One of the impetuses driving the need for renovations at this time is the rise in enrollment. “Since the April 2005 referendum, the district enrollment has steadily climbed,” says LaSusa in his newsletter, “The increase in students has stretched our facilities and limited the district’s flexibility to optimally run programs. In addition, it has forced the district to divert investment away from critical infrastructure and into additional classroom space that has been added in incremental steps to handle the increased number of students. At the current time, there is an immediate need for more classroom
space at the elementary level and improvements in critical infrastructure. This referendum seeks to address these needs.” One of the factors driving increased enrollment may be the high standards and various accolades that the district has received. According to the district website, “Chatham High School has enjoyed some positive pub-
licity this summer, with both Newsweek and New Jersey Monthly Magazine ranking it as the top public high school in the state.” Having schools that consistently rank as the highest in the state, can attract new people to the community. The first referendum on the ballot is the continued on next page

Chatham High School Auditorium Renovation, which is estimated to have a net cost to the district of $2,100,000. The auditorium was built in the early 1970’s and in addition to being outdated in appearance, it is also not ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant, and needs new carpet. All of these
concerns would be rectified by the referendum. The second on the ballot is the Chatham Middle School Auditorium Renovation. Built in 1958, this space is in need of updating as well as the removal of its current asbestos flooring. A new sound system, a new lighting system and a new ventilation system would

be installed, as well as to bringing it to ADA compliance for both the audience and performers. The third is the Chatham Middle School STEAM Addition which would convert a wing of the building into a modern S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) facility. Art classrooms would also be renovated under this proposal. The renovations to the Cougar Field at the High School is the fourth referendum, with a proposed new walking path, ADA-compliant bleachers installed, replacement of the sound system, installation of new parking bumpers, as well as a new concession stand and press box. The complex dates to the 1970’s and is still mostly original. The macadam pavement also needs to be replaced. Fifth on the list of referendums is the Milton Avenue School’s four classroom addition. According to LaSusa's September letter, “There is currently insufficient space in our three elementary schools. In each building, certain programs are forced to share classrooms or take place in non-classroom areas. For multiple years now, our enrollment has
exceeded demographic projections. This year, our enrollment is at its highest point in the history of the district. Building four classrooms at MAS will provide more flexibility to move stand-alone programs from other buildings to MAS, thus opening space in all elementary schools.” The last referendum is for partial roof replacements that need to be done at multiple schools. All of these projects qualify for state funds and if approved would have a net cost of $12,048,642 to Chatham residents. The tax cost estimates to residents are based on a 20year bond at a 3.25 percent interest rate. If all six ballot initiatives are approved, the cost works out to be about a monthly tax increase for a home assessed at $700,00 of less than $12 a month. The breakdown for each project is clearly listed on the district website in the September edition of the superintendent letter. The voting will take place on Sept. 27 and each voter should receive a mailing detailing the items to be considered. The district webpage is www.chatham-nj.org.

Educational Music Class Blooming In NJ
here is a new music program that opened up in New Jersey that will get little ones dancing, singing and thinking. Located in the Mondo building in Summit, Songs For Seeds is taking registration for its fall session. The business grew out of its parent company Apple Seeds in Manhattan, N.Y. Songs For Seeds began at its NJ location in June with 30 kids signed up for the summer session. With seeds already planted, the music program is blossoming and attracting even more young participants eager to take part. “You have to see it,” says Debbie Martin of Morristown, franchise owner of Songs For Seeds in Summit. “What makes us stand out” is the “kind of engagement. We encourage the children eye to eye. The babies are listening to rhythm, music and beat.” Martin describes Songs For Seeds as “really innovative and highly engaging program for kids. A well-structured and happy

music class. We have a three piece band. Real guitar, real drum, real keyboard. Three professionally trained musicians” who lead the classes focusing on different themes in each class. Designed for babies through preschool, Songs For Seeds offers two different 45 minute classes. One session is for newborn babies through twelve months; the other session is for those twelve months through age five or six. “Children are taught preschool music and magic and motion,” says Martin. “We teach rhythm and lyrics.” Songs vary from traditional nursery rhymes to popular songs. The program consists of seven sessions with classes meeting once a week. Curriculum is designed by professionals in education. The unique sections encompass a variety of aspects of early childhood learning such as shapes, colors, numbers, animals, sounds from other cultures and magic. Studies show that young kids who are exposed to music have an increased ability to learn, socialize, perform better in kinder-
garten and in school, explains Martin. The program is unique as live musicians introduce youngsters to different instruments from different countries, coupled with rhythms and sounds.
“You don’t get that anywhere else,” says Martin. The musicians interact with the kids which helps build their self-esteem and

Martin, who has an undergraduate degree in psychology and a master’s in business, “decided to follow my life’s dream of owning my own business,” she says. “I wanted to own a business that makes a difference. Music is like the soul for people.” Music affects the temper, moods, “calms people down,” and can essentially be the “background for learning. It’s such a posi-

Martin’s goal is to branch out and open another location in N.J. as well as a class for those children with special needs. Songs For Seeds is a franchise business with multiple locations throughout the nation. “We now have 12 locations operating from Summit to Seattle, and six more set to open,” says Alison Qualter-Berna of Manhattan, co-owner of Songs For Seeds and Apple Seeds. “Our philosophy, also at our parent company, Apple Seeds, which we founded 10

years ago, is that children learn through play,” says Qualter-Berna. “We believe that if you give the kids the tools and build their confidence, learning is not only exponential, it's fun. It’s very interactive. We are not presenting to them, we are working with them.” A native of Short Hills who attended Millburn High School, Qualter-Berna, a mother of three including two twins, founded Apple Seeds with another mother of twins, Allison Schlanger, when the pair realized the challenges of working mothers. “It was very frustrating to go to music classes with twins,” says Qualter-Berna. “We couldn’t fit twin strollers in the elevator. We both had jobs, the struggle of being a working mother.” The two were inspired “to start a place you can go, doors open automatically, everyone knew your name, on ground floor, you can spend the day there. There was such a need in our community; there was nothing simple and easy to bring everyone together.”
With their husband’s support, they opened Apple Seeds in March 2017- an all in one indoor play-space for children newborn to five years old, with 100 classes a week, with three locations in NY. “We quickly realized we wanted more of a music program,” says Qualter-Berna, thus bloomed Songs For Seeds in Jan. 2009, and spread to a dozen locations. The next one is opening in Hoboken. “This is innovation,” says Martin, adding that Songs For Seeds was named ‘Best Kids’ Music Class’ by “New York Magazine,” and ‘Most Magical Music Class’ by “Red Tricycle.” Songs For Seeds is offering a free trial class, an early bird discount of 20 percent off as well as an additional 10 percent off for those who present this article. vated. “The leadership training provided by the senior Air Force leaders was not only insightful, but also incredibly motivating,” said Ryan. “I am eager to share with my students what I learned at the Air Force Academy and Schriever Air Force Base by folding in new ideas into my lesson plans to shape the future leaders of tomorrow. I could not be more grateful for the opportunity I was provided, I will surely remember this trip for a lifetime.” The leadership program consisted of character and leadership development seminars, lectures and team building exercises to provide insight on how the Air Force develops leaders, how Airmen execute their missions as it relates to STEM, and STEM career opportunities available in the Air Force. “STEM is an inherent part of the Air Force mission. Longtime Municipal Clerk Honored For Milestone Birthday
he Morris County Board of Freeholders recently honored long-time Chatham Township Municipal Clerk and Administrator, and dedicated community volunteer Alice Lundt on her 100th birthday. The freeholders issued a resolution, along with a birthday cake, to the new centenarian at the county governing board’s meeting in Morristown. “Alice has been well known over the years to many Morris County Boards of Freeholders, legislators and congressmen, and has long been a leading presence in government in Morris County,’’ said Freeholder Director Kathy DeFillippo. “She long served her constituents with professionalism and kindness. She also has been a leader in her own community in Chatham Township, volunteering to serve on many boards and in many organizations, helping to make the Chathams and Morris County a better place to live.’’ Freeholder Doug Cabana presented the resolution to Lundt, who was joined at the
ceremony by Chatham Township Deputy Mayor Kevin Sullivan and Chatham Township Committeewoman Karen Swartz, plus some friends. She also received a special certificate from the Morris County Clerk’s Office, which was presented to her by County Clerk’s Chief of Staff Debbi Merz. Lundt humbly accepted the resolution, talking briefly about her time in Chatham Township, her Republican roots and her friendship with county officials over the decades. She was born on Aug. 10, 1916, in her family home in Manitoba, Canada, while the nation was immersed in World War I – “The War to End All Wars’’ – and she would live to see many more wars in her lifetime. After surviving the world-wide flu epidemic of 1917, a healthy Alice began a life journey that took her from Canada to Iowa, California, Chicago, St. Louis and finally to New Jersey, where she settled in 1952 in Chatham, where she took lifelong roots.

She met Marvin Lundt at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and the couple fell in love and they married on June 22, 1941, six months prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and while Marvin was in the Navy ROTC Program. Lundt made her mark in the community as the “go to’’ person in town hall in Chatham Township, appointed as Township Clerk in 1964 and as the first Township Administrator in 1975. She served in both roles until her retirement after 35 years in 1989. After retirement, however, she became even busier as a community leader, serving in key roles for numerous organizations, including: the Art League of the Chathams, Library of the Chathams, Historical Society
J
of Chatham Township, Senior Services Center of the Chathams, Glenwood Housing Corporation, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and the Adult School of the Chathams, Madison and Florham Park. The freeholders, in their resolution, recognized that lifelong service: “Alice has been not just a pillar of the community, serving residents with great dedication and intelligence, but she has treated people with grace and kindness, and has been a beacon of civility and understanding that government is often accused of lacking. The Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders joins with her family and friends and extends its warmest greetings to Alice Lundt on the joyous occasion of her 100th birthday.”

Household Hazardous Waste And Electronics Collection Day In Chatham
he Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority has scheduled a free Household Hazardous Waste Disposal and Computer/T.V. Drop-Off events, to help Morris County residents properly discard unwanted hazardous household products and recycle electronic equipment that has accumulated in their homes. The MUA has set up Oct. 1 in Chatham, to make it easier for residents to get rid of unwanted items, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Chatham High School in Chatham. The event will be held rain or shine. “These events are designed to provide county residents with a free and relatively easy opportunity to properly dispose of items that can be harmful to the environment, and which should not find their way into the regular trash disposal stream,’’ said Morris County Freeholder Christine Myers, who is the county governing board’s liaison to the MUA. “We are pleased the MUA provides free drop-off programs for Morris County resident to make getting rid of household hazardous waste and E-waste is safe, convenient
and free.” Morris County residents who have started their fall cleaning projects can drop-off, at no charge, unwanted hazardous materials and electronic devices, including computers, monitors, printers, scanners, fax machines and televisions from their homes. The list of acceptable hazardous materials (http://mcmua.com/sw_hhw_events.asp) include, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, oilbased paints, stains, paint thinners and removers, solvents, automotive fluids, lead acid and rechargeable batteries, pool chemicals, and darkroom chemicals. Also accepted are aerosol cans (not empty), propane and helium cylinders, small quantities of asbestos (wetted, double bagged and sealed with duct tape-100 pound limit), driveway sealant, roofing tar, fluorescent bulbs, PCB-ballasts, mercury thermometers and switches, household cleaning products, muriatic acid. Latex paint is not considered hazardous, so it will not be accepted. Latex paint can be disposed of in the normal trash after drying out the paint by mixing an absorbent such as
kitty litter in the can. Explosive or highly reactive materials, such as picric acid or nitro compounds, will not be accepted. It is important to note that this event is for residential household waste and electronics only. Businesses are not permitted to attend. Visit the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority website for information and direc-
tions to each location, at http://www.mcmua.com/sw_hhw_events.asp The MUA also accepts household hazardous waste and electronics by appointment only at its Mt. Olive Transfer Station. For information, visit: http://www.mcmua.com/ sw_hhw_pfac.asp. Call the MUA at 973-631-5109 for additional questions.
