Livingston Student Wins Gold At Pan-American Wushu Championship
By Maryanne ChristianoMistretta nnie Shen, 11, of Livingston, member of the USA Junior Wushu team represented the United States in the 11th Pan-American Wushu Championships, which was held from Aug. 12 to 14 at the City Bank Coliseum in Lubbock, Texas. The international event occurs every two years and is open to 23 countries from North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Teams competing this year were the national Wushu teams
from Argentina, Barbados, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Trinidad Tobago and the United States. Shen won a gold medal in the Junior Female Spear Event, Qiangshu. Wushu is Mandarin for Chinese martial arts, also known as Kung Fu and is short-listed to become an official Olympic sport in the 2020 games. Shen has been training for three years at Wushu Kung Fu Fitness Center in East Hanover, owned by Allen Tjiong. Tjiong says that Shen
won because of her hard work, training, focus, and discipline. And great coaches that work at the center. Tjiong said “All coaches were former world champions and national team coaches. Annie made the U.S Junior Team last July. It was held in San Jose, California.” Shen attends Mt. Pleasant Middle School in Livingston. She says it felt great to win the competition but she didn’t think it was going to happen. “My competition was really good,” she says. “I didn’t think I would win. I was surprised. I didn’t think I’d come this far.” Prior to the competition, the teams had to get their weapons inspected and Shen said that hers was too short. Another girl lent her a spear, which made her more determined to win. “I think it gave me good luck,” she says. “Since she was so nice to lend me her spear, it was like a gift from God.”
Even though Shen trained every day, including Saturdays, with only Sundays off, she didn’t feel like she sacrificed to reach her goal because she was among friends who also trained. Though she quit taking ballet lessons and gymnastics in order to pursue Wushu. “It’s way more fun,” she said. Shen enjoys Wushu for many reasons.
“It’s very good for your body,” she says. “And it’s really fun. I like to do all the different forms. Each form is different. Every person is different. Everyone has their own style. I do ballet, so I’m graceful.” Aside from Wushu, Shen plays piano and enjoys arts and crafts. She looks forward to starting Chinese school again, but
for now she enjoys her down time. “I like to watch TV,” she says, “since it’s summer. When I go to school, I don’t have time for TV.” As much as Shen loves Wushu, it’s not in her grand scheme of things. “I have other plans,” she said. “I think I want to be a teacher. It’s something I’ll always do.”

Run Or Walk To Help Florham Park Man Faced With ALS
By Anastasia Marchese eading the medical description of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) cannot in any way describe the devastating effect this disease has on a human life. Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease because this famous baseball first baseman succumbed to ALS in 1941. Gehrig was undoubtedly an incredibly fit athlete who devoted his life to the sport. He played 17 seasons for the New York Yankees, from 1923 through 1939. His diagnosis with ALS rocked the nation, and his retirement speech is still regarded as one of the most memorable things that ever happened on a baseball field. Yet at this point in history, more than 75 years after Gehrig’s death, there is not much more that can be done to treat ALS then there was then. Despite all the medical advances, and all the scientific and technological growth that has occurred in that time, there is no cure or even treatment that can significantly slow the progress of the disease. There are only medications and treatments
to help deal with some of the symptoms, with clinics across the country that specialize in personalized treatment plans for ALS victims. Donna York who started the non-profit organization, HARK in 2011, explained that she was compelled to found the charity after dealing with the loss of her father, Charlie “Hark” Dourney, to ALS in 2009. She had a large support group as she shared the care of her father with her six sisters and brothers. “After he passed away I often thought, ‘What would I have done if I didn’t have my family, what if it was just me and I had to go through that myself, how would I ever have been able to manage? I would have been totally overwhelmed with nowhere to turn for help.’” That is why York reached out last year to the Fleming family, when she heard that the father Scott, was suffering with ALS and was unable to return to his Florham Park home. He was living in a VA facility because his family could not care for him at home without significant renovations. “The total cost of the renovations was
going to be $130,000 and the VA gave him $70,000,” said York. She recalls Fleming’s words on the phone to her, “I don’t want to leave my wife in debt.” Dealing with ALS and the cost of caring for a loved one at home can often lead to bankruptcy, due to many aspects not being covered by insurance. Fleming is a former Marine and ALS is considered a service related disorder, since veterans are 60 percent more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than non-veterans. Fleming was living in the VA facility for two years. Not only is Fleming a former Marine but he had been an avid runner and triathlete prior to his diagnosis. When York spoke with him about ideas to raise the funds needed for their home renovations, she thought that organizing a 5K to raise funds made sense. It also fits with York’s expertise as her career is as a race planner. Her company, AC Race Management works with organizations like Girls on the Run, to organize their 5K’s. Her professional experience can come in handy as she organizes events for HARK, in order
to “change the way the world views ALS’” and to provide “assistance to alleviate the financial burdens faced by families battling ALS.” Last year the first Scott-A-Palooza 5K raised $42,000. Home Depot donated $20,000 worth of materials to HARK, which were then used to help complete the renovations. In June of this year, Fleming was able to return home and live with his family again. Fleming considered HARK’s work complete now that he had returned home. York however wanted to make the Scott-A-Palooza an annual event in order to help the family continue to afford the many expenses associated with caring for Fleming at home. On Sun., Sept. 18, runners and walkers will converge at the College of St. Elizabeth for the second, Scott-A-Palooza. Participants can sign up at runsignup.com/Race/NJ/Morristown/ScottAPalooza5KtoKickALS. More information can also be found on the HARK website www.hark-als.org and its Facebook page www.facebook.com/Hark alshope/.

WHAT’S NEW IN DENTISTRY Recently, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new dental material called silver diamine fluoride, which has been used for decades in Japan. This new material can arrest large tooth decay after removing the decay with a hand instrument. While it is not a permanent solution to treating cavities, it has a wide variety of applications. For instance, it is good for treating cavities in small children. If a three-year-old child has many large cavities in his or her baby teeth but is fearful of the dentist, this new material is a viable option for treatment. The dentist can simply remove the decay with a hand instrument, dry the affected tooth and apply this material. After this, the dentist can go back and restore the teeth one by one at a later date, when the child is more readily able to handle the procedure. The application diamine fluoride can also help those with delayed dental insurance coverage. Sometimes, a patient has a tooth awaiting treatment. His or her dental insurance will not cover the procedures until months later when it becomes effective. This patient can have the material applied as a temporary solution until insurance can cover the procedures to properly treat the tooth. Due to the simplicity of the applica-

tion of silver diamine fluoride and the economical nature of this type of treatment, the patient can meet a budget. Other applications include geriatric care. Many senior patients have a limited budget, yet have many large root cavities due to various medical conditions. Silver diamine fluoride can economically arrest multiple cavities after one procedure. It provides a valuable and cost-effective alternative. As always, my office stays at the forefront of dental technology and material science. Our mission is to serve the community at large the best we can.

Service Trip Brings Clean Water To Villagers And Lasting Friendships
T
By Cheryl Conway heir mission was to provide clean water to a village in Nicaragua, but for those East Hanover students and their chaperones that dug the well, their purpose ran a lot deeper. Four teenagers from East Hanover and two of their parents joined one other volunteer from California on a quest to a village outside of Leon, Nicaragua, as part of a team for Living Well International. The group travelled from Aug. 14 to Aug. 20 to participate in The Hanover Park World Water Project. Despite the dust, heat and language barrier with the people in the village, the local attendees welcomed the opportunity to provide clean water to so many people, educate others about proper hygiene, connect with people from a different culture and earn volunteer hours for a great cause. “Most of it is making a personal connection,” says Ed Boze of East Hanover, parent chaperone and organizer of the trip. “It’s really meaningful to them,” the families in the village. “Instead of just sending a check, we are taking the time. We are getting just as much out of it as they are.” This was Boze’s second trip to Nicaragua. He visited a different village there in 2013, digging a well for a public school used by about 200 people. “Now they have clean water,” he says. “They are not getting diseases. They are spending more time in school and less time being sick.”
The East Hanover travelers were housed in a city in Leon by the Living Well International during their stay. They were then taken daily to a village to drill a well to enable about 20 families clean water, says Boze. This year, Boze was joined by his daughter Abigail, and her friends Hanna Gu and Isabelle Chang; as well as Christopher Fagan and his father Dan Fagan. “Anyone is welcome to come,” says Boze, who plans to continue the trip every year. “I invited quite a few people.” He even contacted the Hanover High School principal to let him know about the trip as students are allowed to use their volunteer efforts toward their service hour requirement needed to graduate. “Adults are welcome but we encourage teens to come for serving,” says Boze. “They can appreciate they can make a difference. I wanted to encourage teenagers that they can make a difference and that they are capable of making a difference.” Volunteers are involved in several tasks such as drilling, shoveling, calculating lengths of drill pipe and teaching hygiene to people in the village to cover washing hands, brushing teeth, washing dishes, explains Boze. The work is not easy. They are in the field 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with drilling Monday through Thursday. Boze described the trip as ‘the dustiest place we’ve ever been.” Besides that “it was continued on next page

very hot all day long. “When operating a hydraulic drill, they are sweating; they are supervised and are working hard,” says Boze. You are covered in mud, dust and sweat. We drilled down 220 feet; it’s a deep well; every five feet you need to swap out pipe.” There is whole system that requires methods like removing old pipe, installing PVC casing, creating cement pad, installing well head. They are not alone at the site, working alongside about 15 people from the village, as well as employees of Living Well International. Guiding them is a drill leader who supervises and provides the training with the hydraulic drill, as well as a health leader who advises on hygiene training. “People in the village are volunteers like we are,” says Boze. “We are not doing it ourselves,” but instead are “making connections with people in the village.” They are also making a difference in the quality of life for others. Boze estimates that about 150 people will be using the new well that his group helped dig.
The lack of clean water causes 80 percent of diseases worldwide, Boze explains. There are more than 600 million people worldwide who do not have clean water. Living Well International is a group that is dedicated to the cause of providing clean water for some of the poorest people in the world. While clean water is necessary in other areas, “Nicaragua has a particular need,” says Boze. “It’s a third world country; there’s a lot of need there. With lots of volcanos, there are aquifers so we are highly successful when we go there.” When their work was done, the East Hanover travelers got to act as tourists. “We were successful” in digging the well by Thursday, says Boze, “so we spent Friday visiting Nicaragua,” seeing volcanos and the ocean. Cost to attend the trip was $1,900 per person, which is tax deductible. Cost for the well is $5,000. This year, volunteers did have some fundraising to help offset costs for the well and travel, but the majority was private fund-

ing, says Boze. Their hard work is all worth it in the end as they are helping others and making lasting friendships. “When we first meet them, there’s apprehension,” explains Boze. “At the end of the trip they are playing kickball and other games. It’s amazing.” By the end of the week, “they’re just crying, we cry. “Making the connections with the people is extremely gratifying,” says Boze, as is “seeing those teenagers doing things people at home say they can’t do, working with a hydraulic drill, teaching them to operate the rig and watch them do it,” and then forcing air down to the well and seeing that “huge gush of water” and to know “that you actually have a well.” The teenagers took away a feeling of pride and connections. Hanover Park High School sophomore Christopher Fagan, 14, decided to go to Nicaragua “because I thought it was a great opportunity to help others less fortunate than me. I have volunteered to help others in my community, for example, shoveling snow.

However, I had never done a large scale volunteer project. During the trip, I served by working the drill, carrying buckets of water, teaching, and playing with the children.” Fagan, who attended with father Dan, says “Digging the hole was very challenging. It took three days and a lot of repetitive and hard work. At noon each day we ate lunch and then got back to work. We worked until 5:30 each day. The biggest challenge in my opinion was the language barrier. It was very hard to communicate with the villagers on my own. Even though I did not know the language, I was still able to form a bond that will last my entire life. “This trip was important to me because I was able to create a better life for people less fortunate than me,” says Fagan. “I formed many friendships on the trip. I never knew that over the span of seven days, I would be able to become so close to people I did not even speak the same language as. I enjoyed that more than anything. Although it was painful to leave the village, I was comforted by the feeling that I had changed the lives of continued on page 11

Porrino at the dedication of the Essex County Search and Rescue Dog Statue last month at the Essex County Eagle Rock September 11th Memorial in West Orange. The statue commemorates the role that dogs had in the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center and Pentagon after the 9/11 attacks. “We can never forget the devastation and destruction that occurred during the attacks on September 11, 2001,” said DiVincenzo. “Expanding our 9/11 Memorial is our way of recognizing the many lives that were lost, the futures of so many that were changed and the different segments of public safety that came to help. In our lives, dogs become part of our family, are trusted friends and played an integral role in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero and the Pentagon. This statue will ensure their contributions dur-
ing that ordeal are always remembered.” Porrino added, “Today we pay tribute to the roughly 350 search and rescue dogs that worked tireless hours trying to locate survivors amid the twisted pile of steel beams, concrete and ash where the World Trade Center once stood, in addition to the Pentagon. During those harrowing efforts, various handlers stated they were so grateful to have a canine partner just to help them get through it.” The bronze Canine Statue is about four feet tall. The base of the statue on which the dog stands is designed to resemble the rubble at Ground Zero. The statue and the base, which weigh about 5,000 pounds, sit on a one-foot tall block of granite. Sculptor Jay Warren from Oregon designed the Canine Statue. Warren also has worked with Essex County to design statues such as Governor Brendan Byrne, Congressman Donald Payne and Rosa Parks. continued on next page

continued from previous page Artist Harry Gordon from Lambertville designed the base. The statue and installation was funded through corporate contributions. “The space honors the fallen and brave, and now it recognized the role dogs had in the aftermath of 9/11,” said Congressman Donald Payne, Jr. “Once again, the County Executive has displayed incredible vision.” Sheriff Armando Fontoura said law enforcement has benefited from great advances in technology, but successful police work is still measured “by boots on the ground and today the officers are often accompanied by their four-legged friends.” The Sheriff noted that dogs from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office worked at Ground Zero as well as patrolled other neighborhoods in New York City in the aftermath searching for reported explosive devices. “I want to thank County Executive DiVincenzo for remembering the rescue
dogs for what they did after 9/11 and for what they do every day,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. “Search dogs covered 16 acres of land at Ground Zero covered with metal and debris, and went where humans could not go. This is a fitting way to remember how many families gained some sort of closure because of the work by dogs.” A plaque next to the statue begins with a quote from 18th century English poet Alexander Pope: “Histories are more full of examples of the fidelity of dogs than of friends.” The Essex County Eagle Rock September 11th Memorial was dedicated in October 2002, just more than a year after the attacks. Its many elements pay tribute to the men and women, police officers, firefighters and other first responders who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, in Pennsylvania and aboard the four airplanes that crashed that day.
continued from page 8 over 100 people and I would remember them forever and they would remember me.” Boze’s 15 year old daughter, Abigail, shared similar thoughts. Her older sister, Becca, went when she was going into her sophomore year and “she loved it. I saw pictures and heard stories of what they did, so I was excited ever since then,” says Abigail, who did some volunteer work as a Girl Scout. In Nicaragua, “Hannah, Izzie, and I, under the instruction of our hygiene leader, Johanna, would immediately do our first hygiene class for the women and the rest of our team would start drilling the well.” After lunch, “We taught the same lessons that we taught earlier except this time for the children of the village. “We helped these people by teaching them how to properly care for themselves and their families to make sure that they don't become sick,” she says. “After our classes we worked at the drill. The three jobs we did were controlling the hydraulic drill, greasing pipes, and putting in and removing the pipes.” Abigail recommends the trip to others and
would go again. “I didn't expect to make the relationships that I did with the kids of the village. We played kickball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball with them and even had a giant water balloon fight. They started to grow attachments to us too. “There are so many reasons as to why this trip is important,” says Abigail. “You're bringing clean water to a village in need, teaching them how to stay healthy, and giving yourself an experience you'll never forget and they'll never forget either. “There are so many things I enjoyed,” she continues. “Playing different sports with the kids, actually being able to communicate with them one on one, drilling, buying the whole village ice cream, our giant water balloon/water gun fight. Just seeing their faces light up by doing the simplest thing like blowing a bubble was amazing.” For those who would like to volunteer for the 2017 trip, contact bozedad@gmail.com. Volunteers must be 14 years old and older, in good health and “ready to work hard.”

Caldwell University Gallery Presents A Reflection On Short-term Service Trips
he Visceglia Gallery at Caldwell University is presenting “Belize: Beyond the Blue Skies and Clear Waters,” a reflection of short-term service. This exciting exhibition features photography and written reflections on short-term service trips by Caldwell University students and faculty members. The writing and photography attempt to capture and share the sense of discovery, place and community many may not have the chance to experience. The exhibition runs through Sept. 27. On Sat., Sept. 24 Senior Sean Puzzo, who has attended Belize service trips, will give a minilecture from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the gallery. Since 2013 Caldwell University has taken small groups of students, faculty, and staff to Belize to serve in the poorest district of Belize, Toledo. The Caldwell group has stayed at St. Peter Claver Parish in Punta Gorda, a small coastal town in the Toledo District. Punta Gorda serves as the “base camp” each year from which the group travels from and to their service sites. Short-term service experiences offer stu-
dents the opportunity to experience a new location and community in a way that is different than study abroad. Optimally, students learn about history, culture, economy, the complexity of social issues, and a way of life through firsthand experiences, in either a domestic or international setting. Puzzo, an exhibition co-curator, points out that, “Engaging in short-term service learning trips promotes tolerance and the reduction of stereotypes by working with unfamiliar populations. It also nourishes personal development, self-efficacy, and leadership.” And when successful, the volunteers leave without seeing themselves as heroes, but with enduringly deep connections and an awareness of the need for long-term partnership with the community. When students volunteer in these communities they forge relationships, learn valuable life lessons as well as practical ones. Prof. Kendall Baker, the Visceglia Gallery director and co-curator, noted, “In 'Belize: Beyond the Blue Skies and Clear Waters’ the photographs, reflections and

Cadets Keep Busy In NJ Wing Summer Camp
his summer has been a busy one for many young members of the Civil Air Patrol, or better known as cadets. The Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program runs all year round but when the weather is nice and students are out of school, the most exciting and unique events open up. One of the most recognized events in the Cadet Program is the NJ Wing Encampment. Each state has its own encampment, but this summer cadets from Morris County joined more than 100 other cadets from New Jersey and the tri-state area in a rigorous eight-day summer camp at Joint Base McGuire Dix, Lakehurst. Each day the cadets were woken up and hurried out to their formations while the morning was still pitch dark. The week consisted of activities such as physical training, obstacle courses, team building, safety trainings, drills and marching, room and uniform inspections, competitions and games between groups, orientation flights with CAP airplanes, educational tours with the Air Force and Army, educational classes and lectures in emergency services and

aerospace. Two unique events were provided to some cadets during this year's encampment: a military orientation flight on a C-17 and participation in an urban tactical operation. By the end of the week, the cadets had gained much knowledge and had experiences they would never forget. On day nine, all of the cadets graduated from the basic encampment. A ceremony was held for the parents and to congratulate the cadets and honor their hard work. Many parents noticed a positive change in their kids from character to motivation and many made friends to last into the future. This group of cadets is looking to come back next year and help to run encampment as staff. Many will agree that encampment was the highlight of their summer, yet there were a few other events of interest in the local area. The cadets participated with the Raritan Valley Composite Squadron in the Fourth of July Parade in Chatham. Some members of the squadron participated in a Urban Direction Finding (UDF) Course as
part of the Emergency Services mission of CAP. They learned how to find airplane’s Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT) after an accident, how to read road maps and sectional maps, types of emergency services missions, communications basics, how to properly operate certain radios, and
