By Cheryl Conway unds are still being collected from the community to help a Blairstown woman and her daughter deal with financial trouble after the sudden loss of their loved one. Long-time Roxbury resident Frank Zara, who later moved to Sparta and then settled in Blairstown, died suddenly on May 27 from a massive stroke at 60 years old. He left behind his wife of 26-years, Dotty, and daughter, Chelsea, a full-time student at Rutgers University. To help cover escalating medical bills and mortgage, Chelsea’s college friend started a Go Fund Me Page for support. Gina Sandelli of Landing started www.gofundme. com/in-memory-of-frankzara on June 19. In just 20 days, 228 people have raised $21,675 of $25k goal. “I didn’t even know they

were making a page until I saw it,” says Chelsea, who plans to return to Rutgers University in September to earn her doctorate in physical therapy after receiving her bachelor’s from University of Connecticut. “We have to pay mortgage, insurance and all the bills. My mom and I are so shocked that we got such a response; it’s really humbling.” Both mother and daughter work at restaurants: Chelsea works as a waitress at Alice’s Restaurant in Lake Hopatcong; Dotty works overtime as a full time server at Long Horn in Parsippany. As the main household provider, Frank Zara had owned Zara Construction in Roxbury up until five years ago when he started working as a mason contractor for homes and businesses, says Chelsea. Spending more than 50 hours a week working
in construction, Frank developed severe pain in his right hip. When he visited Urgent Care on April 30 for the hip pain, he had been transferred to Newton Memorial and admitted on May 1. A series of biopsies and scans detected that the pain in his hip was due to cancer that had spread to his hips, pelvis, ribs and spine. “The most pressing issue of all was the cancer on his spine – a 5.2 cm tumor on his 3rd thoracic vertebrae,” as described on the go fund me page. “This tumor was pressing on his spinal cord. If it grew even the slightest bit, it would cause Frank to become completely paralyzed from the shoulders down. On May 19, Chelsea had her father transferred to the cancer specialists at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Philadelphia, followed by radiation treatment to shrink the tumor on
his spine. “After just five sessions of radiation, Frank had been completely drained,” as described on the go fund me page. The treatment took an extreme toll on his body, especially when in combination with the endless testing, blood work, and extremely strong medication list.” Just days later, Frank suffered a massive, ischemic stroke, resulting in

loss of speech and partial paralysis, and continued to physically decline. On May 27, Frank had passed away, surrounded by his loved ones. “As if losing a husband and father this fast, and this unexpectedly, wasn’t unimaginable enough, the medial bills that have piled in over the past three weeks have pushed Dotty and Chelsea beyond comprehension,” wrote Sandelli on the go fund me page. Although Frank had Aetna which covered 80 percent of the medical bills, the Zaras were still to pay $70,000 down from $372,000, says Chelsea. “After his passing, Dotty and Chelsea now also need to cover all household costs,” wrote Sandelli. “On top of it all, Chelsea has
pressing tuition payments due at the beginning of each semester. “When we mentioned the idea of creating a “Go Fund Me” page to the Zara’s, they quickly declined,” she continued. “They continuously stated how uncomfortable they felt asking friends and family to assist them with their financial issues. But, after Chelsea had sent us pictures of the medical bills, we knew we had to do something. “If every person who sees this page can find it in their heart to donate just $5, $10, or $20 – anything you are comfortable with donating - we could come together to help this family ease some of this unimaginable burden,” Sandelli concluded.

Cops N Rodders Event Shoot To Benefit Two Local Causes
By Elsie Walker owie,” “Bam,” “Pow,” might be some of the words that come to mind when describing the 11th Annual the Cops n Rodders of North Jersey Car Club Event set to be held on Sat., Aug. 19; raindate is Aug. 20. The event, located at The Wendy’s, Lowes, and Applebee’s Shopping Center in Hackettstown will have a variety of vehicles on display including recreations of both the Batmobile and Batcycle from the 1960’s “Batman” TV show. In addition, there will also be a recreation of the “Dukes of Hazard” General Lee. The event runs from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., with the gates open to participating vehicles at 8
a.m. to set-up. Pre-registration cost for vehicles is $15. Registration on the day of the event is $20. The event includes vendors; vendors who wish to participate must pre-register. The cost is $20 for a 20’ x 20’ space. For more information on registering a vehicle to display or to be a vendor, contact Ed Barricella of Hopatcong at 973-945-5287 or email twodropeddie@aol.com. In addition to the cars and vendors, there will be a strong-man exhibition and music. Admission for spectators is free. A 50/50 will be held to benefit two charities, with 25 percent going to The Two Kids Foundation and 75 percent going to Smiles for Margaret.
Barricella explained that the Cops N Rodders of North Jersey car club started about 20 years ago. At the start, most of those in it were police, firefighters, or military, active and retired, thus the name of the club. Barricella says that today there are still many police officers in the club. As for the club event, Barricella said that about 400 vehicles are expected to be on display that day with 50 trophies given in a variety of categories including best paint, best engine, club choice, peoples’ choice and best of show. Barricella said one can expect many custom, classic, and race cars to be on display. In addition, the Military Transport Association will have vehicles on
display as will local restoration shops showing their work. The entertainment on that day will include feats of strength by strong man Eric Moss, Do Wop by Mike Mastelloone of the Whiptones, and music by
Toxic Cocktail. There will be rides in customized golf carts. Also, there will be a tug of war where teams can compete to see if they can make a better time getting a giant Army truck over the finish line than did a group of soldiers.
About 50 food, car, and craft vendors are expected. Those wanting to help one of the causes of the day can stop by the Pink Ladies stand, run by area residents Jenna and Jessica Ziemba, to buy some lemonade to continued on page 3

benefit Smiles for Margaret. Barricella noted that “car people are a big family” and the focus on the event day is on helping organizations connected to that car family: the
Two Kids Foundation and Smiles For Margaret. It is through members of another club that the Cops n Rodders of North Jersey learned of the Two Kids Foundation. The Two Kids Foundation helps families whose children have been
diagnosed with cancer or other serious diseases by providing funds to help ease the medical expense burden associated with fighting such diseases. The organization started with a goal of helping two children, thus its name, and has
since helped many more. It partners with the Valerie Center at Morristown Memorial hospital, which refers children and their families in desperate need of help to the foundation, for consideration and support. Smiles for Margaret was the brainchild of Margaret Walling of Hackettstown. Walling was 11 years old when it was discovered that she had a brain tumor. The community rallied to help her and her family. At one point, Walling told her mother, Donna, that she wanted to pay it forward. When she was better, she wanted to take the fundraising organization set up for her and have it help families, just like hers, who had children with cancer. Unfortunately, Walling passed
away in 2013 at age 12, but her desire to help others continues through “Smiles For Margaret.” Barricella shared that Walling’s parents, Donna and Chris Walling, came to the Cops n Rodders weekly cruise nights for years and that it how the car club learned of “Smiles for Margaret.” Sponsors for this year’s
Cops n Rodders Car Club event include Smith Motors of Washington, Rossi Chevrolet of Washington, and Johnson Dodge of Budd Lake. For more information, visit the Cops n Rodders North Jersey page on Facebook or contact Barricella at 973-945-5287.

Kennedy Excellence in Accessibility Award,” asking residents to recommend any local business, organizations, professional offices or other places of public accommodation, service groups, or a county residents, who have made real
strides in facilitating and supporting equality and access for all people, including people with disabilities. The priorities of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act will be used in determining eligibility. The ADA’s four basic priorities are: Access to the accommodation from the sidewalk or parking area; access to goods or services; access to restrooms; and removal of any other barriers. Accessibility, however, is not limited to physical access. Customer service

Chabad Hebrew School Looks Forward To Another Year
he Chabad Hebrew School, is an innovative school that provides an academic and enjoyable environment where children acquire a broad knowledge of Judaism through a motivating and challenging venue. Through the most up-to-date methods of teaching Hebrew reading, writing, Jewish history, holidays and more, the students gain an appreciation for the joys, values and traditions of the Jewish heritage as it is vividly brought to life. Warm, vibrant, experienced Hebrew teachers use creativity and dynamism to make every lesson a unique learning experience. Registration for Chabad Hebrew School is now open for the upcoming year of 2017/2018 with classes beginning in September.
Classes are held on Sunday mornings at the Flanders Valley Country Day School in Flanders, and are offered for children aged 6-13. Jewish education has been proven to be the key factor in Jewish continuity. In an effort to promote Jewish awareness and education, the Chabad Hebrew School offers a stimulating yet friendly environment where children embrace their Jewish roots and gain a true sense of Jewish pride, no matter their level of observance or affiliation. “This program offers a first taste of Jewish learning in a creative, joyful, handson and interesting way.” The hands-on learning style encourages the children to be active rather than passive learners. Fraida Shusterman, di-
rector of the Hebrew School says, “At our Hebrew School, Jewish values and traditions are taught and brought down to the children with a richness and depth that many haven’t been able to do. Our school’s underlying approach is for the children to enjoy the time spent at Hebrew School so that they are left with positive experiences and a greater appreciation for Jewish education. The program is thus carefully blended with games, incentives, crafts, family celebrations and other exciting extra-curricular activities.” To schedule an appointment, call 973-927-3531 or e-mail fraida@mychabadcenter.com. ave you been considering improving your smile, but don’t have the time or money to deal with it at the moment? Dr. Goldberg has been providing the community with a service known as Snap-On-Smile for years. They are removable plastic teeth customized to your mouth, and when in place, you can’t tell they aren’t your own! The Snap-On-Smile is made of a resin (plastic) that is thin, flexible, and comfortable. It fits over your own teeth, like a mouthguard or whitening tray. It can correct stains, chips, gaps, and missing teeth. Without a doubt, it can be life-changing. Goldberg has made these appliances for people for so many reasons: their wedding, job interviews, evaluate veneers or cosmetics
Instant Veneers – How To Get An Immediate Smile Makeover before actually performing the work, and modeling shoots. One question people ask regularly is if the Snap On Smile with affect speech, since it fits over your own teeth. It can, but not always. Some people require a short adjustment period to get used to having something new in their mouth. Within two weeks, most people adjust without a problem. Another common question revolves around staining. The Snap On Smile is quite stain resistant, but over time, it can darken from certain foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, wine, and soda. The appliance comes with a cleaning kit, which does a great job for maintenance. So who isn’t a candidate for Snap On Smile? The biggest disqualifications
are periodontal (gum) disease and decay. If you have gum disease or multiple cavities, these issues need to be addressed first. Cost is also a question Goldberg and his staff hear often. There are two versions of the appliance: a “full arch” and a “partial arch.” The full arch spans all of the teeth in an arch (upper jaw or lower jaw), and is the most commonly requested appliance. It cost about the same as one crown. To see an actual patient of Goldberg, visit his website at MorrisCountyDentist.com, and click on the “Services & Procedures” tab. From here, you can click on the “Cosmetics” tab, and you will find the Snap On Smile. This person came to Goldberg asking to improve both her smile and bite. However,
she was going on vacation and wanted to do something temporarily. In two appointments, we were able to provide her with what you see here. To learn more about the appliance, visit Goldberg’s. If you’d like to see if you’re a candidate for the appliance, call the office and set up a consultation.

Warren Wireless Zones To Give Away Backpacks, School Supplies
D
eserving young students in Warren County will soon benefit from a national backpack giveaway campaign. TCC, the largest Verizon Authorized Retailer in the U.S., announced that Wireless Zone is partnering with the company and Culture of Good to donate 235,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children through TCC’s annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. In Hackettstown, the giveaway will take place on Sun., July 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Wireless Zones in the Mansfield Commons and in Washington. Backpacks are filled
with various school supplies, including pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders and glue. One backpack per child present will be given away on a first-come, firstserved basis while supplies last. All leftover backpacks will be donated to schools. Since 2013, TCC has donated more than 495,000 backpacks filled with supplies. More than 1,300 participating TCC and Wireless Zone stores across the country are inviting local families and their children to visit these select locations on July 23. In 2015, the National Retail Federation pre-
dicted the average person with children in grades K-12 would spend $97.74 on school supplies such as notebooks, pencils and backpacks. With more than 16 million children in the U.S. living in poverty, TCC is working to alleviate the rising costs of school supplies through this annual program. Supporters of the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway are encouraged to use hashtag #cultureofgood on Instagram and Twitter to help spread the word. To learn more about TCC, visit http://tccrocks. com/.

Donations Lost, Thrift Store Aborted- SOS Appeals For Financial Support And Volunteers
By Cheryl Conway vacated plan to open a second thrift store may have dimmed its hope for a brighter future, but the battered women’s shelter organization still hangs on to survive. Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS), a non-profit program serving homeless/battered women and children for more than four decades, had planned to open up a second thrift store in Passaic as early as January this past year. The store, Treasures Two, was going to feature furniture and clothing sales, with proceeds to cover the mortgage and utility costs incurred in operating a seven-facility shelter. Plans to open the store
at 919 Main Ave. in Passaic were stalled when the landlord was told he needed to provide a fire suppression system. In the meantime SOS was paying for storage space for months to house furniture and clothing received from generous donators. When the date to open the store was pushed to March, then April, SOS decided it could not wait any longer for the space to be available as they were losing too much money to rent the storage space. “That store won’t be ready for months,” says Sandra Ramos of Ringwood, founder and executive director of SOS. Edee Galzan, volunteer administrative director of
SOS says “SOS was losing money in storage and we couldn’t afford it.” To make matters worse, when SOS announced it had to pull out, the store’s landlord did not refund SOS all of its money owed to them. “He didn’t give us back all our money,” says Ramos. “He owes us $4,000. We paid three and a half months rent, security deposit.” When SOS stopped paying the rent for the storage space, it soon lost all of its beautiful donations, says Ramos. “It’s a gimmick,” says Ramos. The monthly storage rent had increased from $30 to $300. “We got really nice stuff,” and now it is
gone. “Wonderful merchandise over $7,000,” says Galzan. “We lost it. We had to let it go. We signed something; if you are not able to pay, they are allowed to sell it.” With one step forward and two steps back, SOS continues its appeal for monetary donations, volunteers and necessary items to keep the shelters open. With restricted monies coming in, the organization has been in jeopardy of closing its doors to hundreds of women and children. Established in 1977 as Shelter Our Sisters – Ramos began the first shelter for battered women in North America out of her three
bedroom home in Hackensack as early as 1970. The organization changed its name to Strengthen Our Sisters and grew as big as eight houses, two day care centers, a food pantry and a thrift store. The mission of SOS is to break the cycle of domestic violence, poverty and abuse by restoring balance and harmony through individual empowerment. To support her organization, Ramos receives limited money from sources such as the Passaic County Dept. of Human Services and private donations. Ramos currently has 17 nonpaid volunteers who drive shelter residents to look for jobs and attend court, doctor appointments, social
services, schools; and run the thrift store and day care centers. SOS is currently down to seven facilities located in Newfoundland, Wanaque and West Milford, providing shelter to 150 women and children, with more calling every day. Relying on monetary support and understanding lenders has paved the way toward SOS’s shaky survival. One Livingston business person- who had given SOS $35,000 to support the second thrift store and help pay for the shelter’s utility fees- issued another $9,000 to SOS for its troubles. Ramos also managed to get the shelter’s mortgage continued on page 21

SOS Appeals For Financial Support... continued from page 20 reduced from $800K to $499K. “Edee’s very organized; we are paying all our bills and trying to hold on,” says Ramos. “She’s organizing the one store.” “We do have a truck now,” says Ramos, to pick up donations. Money is needed for storage of any furniture donations, as well as money for gas to put in the truck. Ramos had been counting on $30,000 from a United Way grant but that was denied when SOS didn’t have its audit completed in time, she says. “Keeping seven shelters running is no joke,” says Ramos. SOS is $73,000 behind in the monies owed to PSEG and operating costs.
Losing the second thrift store, “This really set us back. “We are still accruing bills,” says Ramos. “They are allowing us to stay open; they see we are making an effort. They could have cut us off a long time ago.” While donations are appreciated, Galzan says SOS needs to reorganize its one thrift store for more space before accepting any furniture or large items. Financial donations to help pay for the mortgage and utilities is SOS’s greatest need, as well as volunteers to drive the residents to appointments, work at the store and shelters and landscape the properties. Other immediate items include large black con-
tractor garbage bags, toilet paper, cleaning products, non-perishable food, fresh fruits and vegetables, beds, a power lawn mower and weed whacker. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1089, Hewitt, N.J., 07421; or call 973831-6156. Those willing to donate can also go to gofundme.com/strengthenoursisters. Another option is to visit SOS’s thrift store, Treasures, at 196 Lincoln Ave., West Milford. In existence for 30 years, Treasures is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call the store at 862-248-9935 for more information.
