Rutherfurd Hall Rich In History Offers Many Programs To Area
By Jane Primerano hen the Allamuchy Township School District proposed buying the former Villa Madonna and converting part of it into a school, the suggestion was met with considerable skepticism. The elementary school was getting crowded and its proximity to Trout Brook made expansion impossible. The district owned a parcel of land near the township municipal building, but the property was less than ideal and building a whole new school is an expensive proposition. The former convent was slated for a condominium development but the Highlands Act curtailed any building in the region. So, defying the objections of some of Allamuchy’s elected officials, the board of

education embarked on its grand experiment. Today, Villa Madonna, rechristened Rutherfurd Hall as it was called when it was a private home, is proving a little imagination can go a long way. First, a little background. The Hall, which is on the state and national register of historic places, was built in 1903. It was designed by architect Whitney Warren, who
also designed Grand Central Terminal for Winthrop Rutherfurd, son of Lewis Morris Rutherfurd and Margaret Chanler Stuyvesant. Winthrop was a descendent of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant. As if the platinum New York City pedigree wasn’t enough, after the death of his first wife, Winthrop married Lucy Mercer, his children’s nanny. Lucy Mercer had been Eleanor Roosevelt’s
FDR visited Lucy at the Hall that propels much of the local fascination with the building. Laurie Rapisardi, executive director, is the sole fulltime employee. She juggles rentals of the property and programming for the com-
munity. “Everything we do at the house is a history lesson, Rapisardi said during a recent interview on the patio of the mansion. “Even at weddings, they want to know about the family and the continued on page 4

Fundraiser Outing Combines Golf And Octoberfest Celebration
n Octoberfest with German specialties, fall foliage and golf - now that is a unique combination. That's what to expect at the third Annual House of Good Shepherd Golftoberfest on Tues., Sept. 27. The outing takes place at the picturesque Shawnee Inn Golf Resort in Shawnee-onDelaware, Pa., located along the Delaware River. Check in and breakfast begins at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The four-person scramble format concludes with a gourmet lunch, prizes, an oom-pah band, Oktoberfest beer and other surprises. "This is a really enjoyable golf outing that's taken on a life of its own," said Dave Woods, director of Development at The
House. "We have a lot of fun but most importantly it's about raising funds for a very special program here at The House." Proceeds from the event benefit The House's Shepherd's Fund, which provides financial support to residents whose financial resources have become depleted over time. The fund ensures that residents will never be asked to leave The House due to inadequate funds. To register for the golf outing, or for more information on sponsorships, contact Dave Woods, director of Development at The House, at dwoods@hotgs.org or call 908684-5724. Rutherfurd Hall...
house. The house is a perfect setting for weddings, with a brick terrace overlooking Allamuchy Pond and a large ballroom for dancing. It is also rented out for birthday and anniversary parties, showers, bar and bat mitzvas, christening parties and other events. These rental events help pay the cost of upkeep of the mansion. The Friends of Rutherfurd Hall also raise funds through applying for grants and through charges for events they sponsor. Summer camps for kids, especially the Percy Jackson and Harry Potter camps are very popular. Another camp presented this summer taught traditional games like kickball, Othello and chess. The camps are run by two Hackettstown High School teachers who recruit their students as counselors. Early campers are now coming back as junior counselors, Rapisardi said. The monthly “Mommy and Me painting classes routinely sell out. The room the nuns used as a chapel is a nice setting for entertainment. Music presented there includes county and western, rock and jazz and comedy nights are also popular.
Series talks have been well attended since the beginning. Many have dealt with the history of the hall or the Rutherfurd family. Others have been on topics of local history: Jim Lee spoke on the Morris Canal, an agricultural expert on local heirloom tomatoes. Other talks originated because the speaker wanted to see the hall, such as Pulitzer-prize winner Jonathan Alter who was sponsored by the New Jersey Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and enjoyed a tour of important sites to the Stuyvesant and Rutherfurd families by hall volunteer Charlie Fineran. The current series, sponsored by House of the Good Shepherd, brings Centenary University faculty to the hall. Stephen Davis, a theater professor, will speak on arts education; Dr. Lauren Bergey, associate professor of biology, will speak on invasive species. Emilia Phillips, assistant professor of creative writing, will speak on “Why Poetry Still Matters in the 21st Century. New Centenary President, David Haney, and his wife, Lisa Baldwin, will be at the hall on Fri., Sept. 30, for a meet and greet. The Women On the Watch series, run by Sarah Brelbi will continue with Hackettstown Mayor Maria DiGiovanni on Nov. 1.
The fall and winter schedules are full, but Rapisardi is constantly looking for more ways to bring the public into the hall. She is considering flower arranging and dance classes. Groups schedule breakfast or luncheon meetings and the hall has caterers who regularly work with the groups. Collections specialist Joan Salvas coordinates history talks. Jessica Taenzer coordi-
nates marketing. Most of the rest of the work at the hall is done by volunteers, many members of the friends group. A foundation to help with fund raising was just launched, Rapisardi said. The hall is open every Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for tours and group tours can be arranged. Rapisardi welcomes anyone interested to come to see the history and the activities at Rutherfurd Hall.

Local Blood Drives Offered
ew Jersey Blood Services plans to conduct local blood drives which are open to the public. The following drives are scheduled: Mon., Sept. 26, Knights of Columbus 3665, Netcong, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 29, Lincoln Equities, Rockaway, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. New Jersey Blood Services, a division of New York Blood Center (NYBC) is asking for help to maintain an adequate supply of all blood types, but especially O-negative – the “universal” blood which can be transfused into anyone in an emergency. In addition, hundreds of additional blood drives need to be scheduled to meet projected hospital demand. Current inventory of several blood types is running below the desired target level. “It’s simple: hospital patient demand for blood often outpaces our best efforts to recruit donors and schedule blood drives,” said NYBC Executive Director of Donor Recruitment Andrea Cefarelli. “There are
always reasons but we have to overcome that for the sake of hospital patients who need us.” “This is one of the toughest times of the year,” Cefarelli added. “We’re asking for our dedicated supporters to roll up their sleeves to make sure we’re able to provide our hospital partners with whatever they need to take care of their patients.” Blood products have a short shelf life – from five to 42 days, so constant replenishment is necessary. Each and every day there are patients who depend on the transfusion of red blood cells, platelets and plasma to stay alive. But blood and blood products can’t be manufactured. They can only come from volunteer blood donors who take an hour to attend a blood drive or visit a donor center. To donate blood or for information on how to organize a blood drive call 1-800933-2566; visit: www.nybloodcenter.org.

Families can also choose to post an alert to the Home Instead Remember for Alzheimer’s Facebook page, connected to 270,000 followers. “These frightening occurrences lead families to call our office and ask for help,” said Tracy Fazzolari of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Hunterdon and Warren counties. “This resource was created to help families understand the risk of wandering and have a tool that empowers them to quickly take action if a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia wanders.” The Missing Senior Network is part of Home Instead Senior Care network’s new Prevent Wandering program, which includes resources such as insight into what may trigger wandering events, steps families can take to help keep their loved ones safe, and tips on what to do if a wandering event occurs. According to the Alzheimer’s Association,
anyone living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia is at risk of wandering. “Wandering can happen at any time, and not just on foot someone in a car or even a wheelchair could wander,” said Monica Moreno, director of Early Stage Initiatives for the Alzheimer’s Association. “A person may want to go back to a former job he or she had, even though that job may no longer exist. Or, someone may have a personal need that must be met. There’s always a purpose and intent. It’s just a matter of identifying the triggers.” Fazzolari said, “We understand the topic of wandering is something many families coping with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia may avoid discussing. It’s important for families to understand the potential triggers for wandering and have a plan in place to help keep their loved ones safe.” For additional tips and program resources, visit www.PreventWandering.com, or contact Home Instead Senior Care 908-835-1400 or 908-788-6705 to learn how family caregivers can help prevent and respond to wandering. Celebrate Lenape Day With Music, Dance And Fun At Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center
or thousands of years, before the European settlers arrived in New Jersey, the Lenape Indians lived in these forests, hunting for deer and bear, living in handmade wigwams, fashioning dugout canoes from tulip poplar trees, and carving their tools out of rock and bone. They lived close to the land, existing in balance with nature. The Lenape are not a thing of the past, but a part of NJ’s heritage that is alive and well today. Take part in a Lenape Celebration at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township, on Sat., Oct. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., bring the entire family to meet the members of the Ramapough Lenape Tribe. Tribe-members present a traditional drum circle, dancers in regalia, and demonstrate real tools and artifacts. “The Lenape Day celebration at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center provides an authentic experience for both the Lenape and visitors,” Jenny Gaus Myers, superintendent of Environmental Education at the Morris County Park Commission stated. “Festivities take place in the woods, sur-
rounding a replica wigwam, which delivers a historically accurate depiction of Lenape life,” he says. “The environment of the Great Swamp makes Lenape Day a favorite of the Lenape Indians, and a memorable and fun day for all visitors.” Gather around a wigwam replica in the forest and to hear authentic, historical stories told by present day Native Americans. Enjoy many hands-on activities, such as molding a clay pot by the fire, making fire without matches, and playing the games that Lenape children played to hone their skills. Take a guided walk on the wooded trails to discover how the Lenape used local plants to meet their needs, or explore the interior of the wigwam, set up as it would have been hundreds of years ago. Admission $5 ages three and up. Held rain or shine. For more information and directions to the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township, visitmorrisparks.net or call 973-635-6629.

Learn About Fall Birds At ‘Coffee And Conservation’ Walks
njoy a hot cup of coffee and a morning nature walk with New Jersey Conservation Foundation during three fall bird walks at the Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center in Chester Twp. Naturalist Bill Lynch, who heads education programs for New Jersey Conservation Foundation, will lead “Fall Migration Bird Walk” on Wed., Oct. 12, and “Searching for Sparrows” on Wed., Oct. 19. The events run from 8 to 10 a.m., and are part of NJ Conservation’s popular “Coffee & Conservation” series. Both events will begin with hot coffee provided by Black River Roasters and a brief talk about migrating birds. The group will then take off for leisurely-paced walks through the 100-acre park. The “Coffee & Conservation” series is free, but advance registration is requested for planning purposes. To register online for the bird walks, go to http://njconservation.org/njcfevents.cfm. The walks are generally held rain or shine, but may be postponed or cancelled in the event of a heavy downpour. The GPS address for Bamboo Brook is 11 Longview Road, Far
Hills, NJ, 07931. October in New Jersey offers an incredible diversity of migrating birds. On the Oct. 12 Fall Migration Bird Walk, Lynch will lead a search for fall migrants, including warblers, sparrows and birds of prey. On the Oct. 19 walk, Lynch will focus on sparrows. “While most of the colorful warblers have headed south for the winter, new species of sparrows are just arriving,” he said. “We will walk through meadows and forest edges, learning to distinguish similar species.” The Coffee & Conservation walks are part of NJ Conservation’s “Step Into Nature” series of walks, talks and fun outdoor events throughout the state. For more information, contact Lynch at blynch@njconservation.org or 908-997-0725. NJ Conservation Foundation is a private non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve land and natural resources throughout NJ. Since 1960, the foundation has protected 125,000 acres of open space, farmland and parks. For more information, visit www.njconservation. org.

started treatments right away, and only four years to live if all went well. Ten years later, Meyer suffers memory loss due to the brain radiation treatment she received as she battled her cancer. She has fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis and has to go back to her oncologist for regular checkups because many medicines prescribed for arthritis can cause cancer. But none of this has deterred her to advocating for lung cancer awareness. Meyer is involved with the Cancer Hope Network in Chester where she talks to people newly diagnosed with the cancer that she had. She shares her story with them and lets them know that they are not alone. Anyone interested in joining the walk or donating to the cause is encouraged to visit www.freetobreathe.org/northernnj.

Meyer will participate in this year’s walk with her team “10 Years and Counting. The five-year survival rate of lung cancer is 17 percent and has remained nearly unchanged for years. Itchy eyes, watery nose and coughing led Meyer to initially believe she had allergies. When breathing got so difficult she couldn’t walk up stairs, she sought medical treatment. Her allergist suggested she might have COPD and recommended a pulmonologist. It was at a visit to the pulmonologist that a CT scan was finally done, revealing small cell lung cancer. A five centimeter tumor behind Meyer’s breast bone sent her life into a spiral of changes. Her oncologist told her she had only 11 weeks to live unless she

United States Power Squadron Offers State Boating Safety Course
orthern New Jersey Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS), plans to offer the New Jersey State Police approved Boating Safety Course at James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. beginning Tues., Sept. 27. The course taught by certified instructors licensed by the State of NJ, and which meets all the mandatory requirements necessary for obtaining a NJ State Boating Safety Certificate, will run every Tuesday evening for seven weeks which includes a night for review, and a night for the re-
N
quired state examination. The cost of the course is $94. Legislation in the state of NJ was passed a number of years ago requiring all boaters, 16 years of age or older, operating a power driven vessel including a personal watercraft (PWC), to complete a boating safety course. The legislation requires a minimum of eight hours of instruction with at least six hours of in-classroom study and a proctored examination. Those successfully completing the course will receive a NJ Marine State Police certificate that must be in the operator’s possession when on the waters of the state. Failure to
exhibit the certificate is presumptive evidence that the person has not completed an approved boating safety course and is subject to a fine. This certificate is separate from the license required for boating on lakes. Registration is made through the Con-
tinuing Education office at James Caldwell High School, after 6 p.m., Mon. through Thurs. Call 973-228-2092. Questions concerning the USPS course can also be addressed to the Boating Course Chair Bob Rosselot at 973-228-5329; email: rosselot17@aol.com.

continued from page 18 week consisted of activities such as physical training, obstacle courses, team building, safety trainings, drills and marching, room and uniform inspections, competitions and games between groups, orientation flights with CAP airplanes, educational tours with the Air Force and Army, educational classes and lectures in emergency services and aerospace. Two unique events were provided to some cadets during this year's encampment: a military orientation flight on a C17 and participation in an urban tactical operation. By the end of the week, the cadets had gained much knowledge and had experiences they would never forget. On day nine, all of the cadets graduated from the basic encampment. A ceremony was held for the parents and to congratulate the cadets and honor their hard work. Many parents noticed a positive change in their kids from character to motivation and many made friends to last into the future. This group of cadets is looking to
come back next year and help to run encampment as staff. Many will agree that encampment was the highlight of their summer, yet there were a few other events of interest in the local area. The cadets participated with the Raritan Valley Composite Squadron in the Fourth of July Parade in Chatham. Some members of the squadron participated in a Urban Direction Finding (UDF) Course as part of the Emergency Services mission of CAP. They learned how to find airplane’s Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT) after an accident, how to read road maps and sectional maps, types of emergency services missions, communications basics, how to properly operate certain radios, and much more. The Cadet Program, which is based in Chatham, continues on into the fall with more fun activities. For more information, contact Sachin Adbe at sachin.adbe@njwg.cap.gov; 862-345-6736.

New Volleyball Club Raises The Level For Local Players
By Cheryl Conway or those who want to up their skills at volleyball, there is a new club in town just getting off the ground. Xtreme Volleyball Academy just opened its doors with a sneak peek event held Sat., Aug., 27. The new club is located on Hillcrest Ave., off of Route 10 West in Ledgewood. Programs are set to begin Sept. 1 with tryouts for club programs to begin Nov. 4. At the sneak peek, visitors were invited to meet volleyball coaches and staff, tour the gym and learn about the innovative programs, methodologies and technologies used by the U.S.A. Volleyball Team now being offered by this newly formed, educational, nonprofit organization.
Programs at this new facility will aim to take volleyball players to a greater level through professional instruction and personal growth, explains Co-Founder and Director of Operations Allison Hayward of Ringoes. “We feel we have created something special here since we plan to offer programs and instructions for every level of skills all while helping individuals and teams grow in their sense of sportsmanship, commitment, character, and community,” explains Hayward. “Our primary objective is to help players develop skills not only as athletes, but also as individuals. Life is about setting and achieving goals – we plan to do that every day here.” XVA will offer eight week club programs on the
national, regional and local levels. In addition, it will offer specialized academy programs for middle and high school players, as well as adult volleyball, beach, a boys’ team and the newest program – Parent Volleyball and Me. Co-Owner and Director of Coaching Braulio Rivera of Flanders, who developed the program explains, “The Parent Volleyball and Me is a one-of-a-kind experience for children ages five to ten to enjoy with their parents/guardians. It’s a very fun, positive instructional program that builds confidence and a bond between the child and parent/guardian.” A seasonal girls’ program, for girls 13-18, will run from Nov. through May in an effort to get local girls to com-
pete at nationals, explains Hayward. Tournaments will be held in Jan. 2017, with about five to seven single day events at the Ledgewood location and three to four away tournaments on weekends in the northeast such as Connecticut, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The club program is sanctioned by the Garden Empire Volleyball Association (GEVA) area of USA Volleyball, says Hayward. At XVA, players will be divided into three levels of play based on skill and preference, explains Hayward. The purple level is the highest ranking team with three weekly practices; green team is the regional level with two weekly practices; and white team is a local team for players involved in other sports. In order to get on a team,
girls must try out during the week of Nov. 4, with 10 to 12 players selected per team. There will also be an eight week boys’ volleyball program starting in Sept. for ages 10 to 13. While the club just had its sneak peak, XVA did offer a 10 week Beach Season program this summer that ended in June, adds Hayward. Girls and boys, ages 11 to 17, participated in a training program to learn how to play volleyball on the beach. The 65 players scrimmaged each other and then some went on to play in tournaments at Seaside and Point Pleasant beaches. With other volleyball clubs as far as 40 minutes away, XVA is attracting volleyball players from local areas such as Roxbury, Mt. Olive, Mendham, Randolph,
Hackettstown, says Hayward. Like other sports, volleyball is offered through school and recreation programs but at XVA volleyball players can experience the greatest techniques in training and technology to bring them to continued on page 29

New Volleyball Club...
continued from page 22 that next level. “Recreation Volleyball is a great way to introduce any sport to any child in the beginning,” says Co-Founder and Club Director/Head Coach Cindy Rivera of Flanders. “However, for those that really love and develop a passion and truly want to excel in the game, continuous training and competing in the higher level of competition will help them become a much better and consistent player which will help our high school program competing in much more competitive levels.” XVA offers an innovative approach called Xcel and new equipment such as VERT. “The future of volleyball is here at XVA,” says Rivera. “We have developed Xcel, a training methodology that combines traditional best practices with the effective use of the newest technologies. Players learn correct volleyball technique, how to condition for strength, prevent injury, and maintain a positive attitude, while living a healthy lifestyle and working as a team.” Hayward explains the Xcel method combines “training, conditioning, methods of nutrition; measuring all of that, what their jumps are, what they’re strong in. They will get an overall evaluation of what they are doing.” Players will be trained at XVA then can go online at home for training and conditioning and to review videos “to see what they did wrong and how to accomplish their goals.” To measure a player’s jump, XVA will be using a new technology called VERT.
“Through the use of new equipment like VERT, the same technology used by the USA Volleyball Team for measuring jump performance, and Live Video Delay software, we enable our players to see real time action to assist them in improving performance,” says Rivera. “We feel we are combining the best of traditional and modern training methods and are really excited to have players come out and experience it for themselves.” XVA is an educational and instructional 501-C- 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to instructing volleyball players through expert training and competitive play. All money goes back into the 7,000 sq. ft. facility to pay for rent and coaches. The facility features an Olympic size court, lounge and WiFi. Players are required to pay for uniforms, equipment and tournaments. It was founded by Cindy and Braulio Rivera and Allison and Mark Hayward, along with coaches with decades of experience, a board of trustees who have extensive experience in the operation and management of Junior Volleyball Clubs, and volunteers who give their time and expertise behind the scenes. The Haywards’ 16-year old daughter had been playing club volleyball for five years when they met the Riveras. Cindy was Haywards’ daughter’s coach. “Cindy and I started brainstorming; next thing you know we are sitting in Ledgewood opening a volleyball club,” says Hayward.
“It’s different,” says Hayward, “it’s not your normal come to a practice or tournament.” It offers college recruiting advice like applying for scholarships, provides a videographer for recruiting videos and will host a College Panel Day. The Riveras both played varsity volleyball in high school, college and organized adults USVBA teams for 20 plus years; have been coaching volleyball at the high school and recreation levels for 10 years; and were involved in the Mt. Olive Recreation Volleyball, Mt. Olive Middle School Travel Program and Beach Volleyball to Mt. Olive and neighboring townships. Cindy is currently the president for the MOHS Volleyball Parent Booster Club. They also organized and ran a summer junior clinic benefiting the MOHS Volleyball program two years in the row. “This has become one of the biggest fund raising events we have to help MOHS's volleyball program,” says Rivera. They passed their love of the game to their daughter Brittany, a junior at MOHS, who plays on the MOHS Varsity Team and was chosen to be on the 2014 United States Junior Beach High Performance team. “Volleyball is a sport that can be taught to play regardless of your age,” justifies Rivera. “It's a sport that involved both mind and physical abilities. It's a very strategic game and it does take certain finesse as well.” For additional information on XVA and its upcoming programs, club news, schedule and events, visit www.xtremevbacademy.com or call (862) 219-5696.
