Seniors Earn Character Scholarships From Wegmans

ive graduating high school seniors from Morris County received $500 scholarship grants from Wegmans Food Markets for their character and values. Wegmans partnered with each school to select a student who exemplifies the family-owned company’s values: Caring, respect, high standards, empowerment and making a

difference. The scholarship winners in the New View Media coverage area are Alex LoRusso of Hanover Park High School, Becky Garcia of Morristown High School and Julia Hark of Whippany Park High School. “Our employee scholarship program is a point of pride at Wegmans, and it’s a pleasure to award these honorary scholarships as

we prepare to open our store,” said Tim Lockwood, manager of Wegmans Hanover Park store, which opens July 23. “Since the program began in 1984, more than 35,000 Wegmans employees have been awarded scholarships, totaling $110 million.” To receive a scholarship, Wegmans employees must meet work-performance criteria. She and her department received the Public Relations Society of America’s Pyramid Award, Best Special Program category for the development of the science education program, according to the luncheon brochure. Rotenburg started her professional career as a special education teacher in her native Canada and has always focused on women and their children in her philanthropy. “I vowed to always help young deserving women,” she said. Working for a major international corporation, Rotenberg and a few female colleagues formed an informal women in leadership group. “We were under the radar because of how complicated it is to do anything up front,” she said. “You don’t do anything alone, you do it with a team, you do it with your spouse,” she said. In her acceptance, Rotenburg encouraged everyone in the audience “to learn every day.” Rotenburg has been in her current role since 2009. Prior to that she was president of BASF Canada,

overseeing communications, legal, human resources, finance and logistics for all BASF Canadian business, including agricultural products, nutrition, chemicals, performance products and plastics. She was BASF Canada’s general counsel and corporate secretary. Hard Work And Positivity Play Key Role In WPHS Girls’ Track Season

T

By Josh Lashley he achievements mounted up this spring for the Whippany Park High School girls’ track and field program. This occurred due to hard work, the ability to adapt and learn from mistakes as well as the ability of the student-athletes to accentuate the positives and believe in the strategic philosophy of the coaching staff. Brad Callahan, the head coach for the Wildcats, recalls some of the top level accomplishments that his team earned this past season. “This season our team was able to achieve Morris County Relays Small School Division Champi-

ons, four years in a row, Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Dual Meet Champions 6-0 (record), four years in a row and Randolph Relays Small School Division Champions, four years in a row,” said Callahan. “County Relays was the biggest surprise because Mountain Lakes was the team predicted to win. “We currently have a 23-0 win streak going in dual meets,” he said. We have been undefeated for four years and we ended up finishing second in the (NJSIAA) North 2 Group 2 State Sectionals.’’ A major reason for the success of Whippany Park has to do with veteran leadership on the roster. “Senior Kate Matriscia-

no was a leader this year in the shot put and discus this season.’’ Callahan said. “She works extremely hard in the weight room and at practice. Senior Franki Kaspar was a leader this season in the pole vault and javelin. She was always willing to help the younger athletes and is extremely committed to the program. Junior Maria Grill was a leader this season on the track in the 100,200 and 400 dash. She was a solid leader by example in practices. No one worked harder in practice than Maria.’’ Callahan was impressed with those competitors for the Wildcats who were constantly getting better as the season moved forward. “Ninth grader Alexa Schauder showed a lot of

improvement in the high jump and pole vault this season,’’ Callahan said. “She started the year clearing four feet in the high jump and ended the season clearing four-feet ten-inches. Also Alexa started the season clearing seven feet in the pole vault and ended clearing nine feet. Eleventh grader Sophia Avallone was hurt all last season and was not able to participate. This season she was healthy and able to throw the shot put 28-8, the discus 80 feet and the javelin 96 feet. Ninth grader Sydney Carlson-Zyats ended up being our fastest runner in the mile (5:34) and 800 (2:24). Gwyneth Gaynor improved a lot in the jumps as the season progressed. She jumped 16-3 in the

973-330-1958 • 908-465-4202

long jump and 34-3 in the triple jump.’’ For the first time in nearly two decades, there will be a new coach for the Whippany Park girls’ track and field team next year. Whoever succeeds Callahan will be left with a good amount of talent as well as a rich tradition. “This was my last year

coaching after 18 seasons as the girls track head coach,’’ Callahan said. “I will be spending more time supporting my children’s sports in the future. We are not sure who the new coach will be yet. There and a lot of returning underclassmen and the team can be competitive next year.’’

In her acceptance speech, Newmark said she is fortunate to work with so many people who enrich the lives of others. She also pointed to the chamber members and others in the room. “Here are women who work hard in non-profits, the home, in local government and those who work behind the scenes,” she said. “There are people who marched for rights in the 1960s. We all stand taller because of them,” noting everyone in the room still has to do his or her best to manage their own time.

Newmark said she was inspired to do good by a quote from Maya Angelou, we all “can be the rainbow in someone’s cloud.” She said, “Each of us as an opportunity to be a rainbow. There are still those

who find it difficult to feed their children, who have no pay parity, who want to go to college and can’t see a way and who are overwhelmed by their lives. Until we all shine, none of us can shine.”

Historic Cemetery In Whippany Gets A Makeover

T

he day began with a heavy rainstorm and high humidity, but the sky cleared just in time for a team of Hanover Township Landmark volunteers to work at the historic graveyard on Route 10 in Whippany. The volunteers were on site at Whippany Burying Yard to repair the “1851” engraved entrance post and wrought iron gates. The post was installed 166 years ago, when Route 10 was a dirt wagon road through Morris County. It was damaged by a vehicle sometime in the late 20th Century; the only thing holding it up was a wrought iron gate latch anchored to the another post. The formal entranceway from Route 10 is rarely

Roofing

used. Heavy, hand-chipped stone posts support three wrought-iron gates. The posts weigh about 500 pounds each. The team of volunteers on site June 24 were Landmark Commission member Len Fariello, Hanover Landmark Chair Mike Czuchnicki, Whippany Garden Club gardener Tom Coates, former Whippany resident Pat Kruger and Committee Member George Coppola. The team continued what volunteers Fariello and Bruce Bruche began the prior week, when they laid the broken, heavy post carefully on the ground. The team reinforced it with internal steel bars. Fariello used a farm tractor to lift the post and then join

the two parts together. The historic wrought iron gates are being repaired by Kruger. Czuchnicki and Coates completed the work team. Other work accomplished that day was the installation of bronze plaques to honor those whose stones are virtually illegible. The plaques were affixed to steel posts driven four feet into the ground. The Burying Yard’s 300year anniversary will be celebrated next year. The sign next to the entrance says: “Whippany Cemetery - 1718,” but it is not quite accurate, since the word “cemetery” had not yet entered the English language when the burying yard was bequest to the “Christian friends and neighbors of Whippanong” in 1718.

The Whippany Burying Yard is the oldest public gathering place in Morris County. The first grave is its founding father, Schoolmaster John Richards. His headstone is the oldest dated colonial artifact in all of
