Elsa Warms Hearts Through Her Mild Manner And Companionship

W

By Cheryl Conway hen Chris Muench of Livingston first got her daughter a Chihuahua for college graduation she did not realize this would unleash her passion and lead to her current roleowner of a pet therapy dog. “I wanted one of my own,” says Muench, when her daughter eventually moved out and took her dog, Baloo, named from “The Jungle Book,” with her. “That dog was fabulous. These are really nice dogs.” So Muench got her own Apple Head Chihuahua and named her Princess Fiona, from the movie “Shrek.” When Fiona died after nine years from her heart condition, Muench got an eight week old, long-haired Chihuahua and named her Elsa from “Frozen.” She got her from her

cousin in Pennsylvania who breeds them. When Muench soon realized that Elsa was different than other dogs, she decided she needed to share her with others to brighten their day. After a year of training, Elsa is now Elsa The Therapy Dog and even has her own Facebook page. “Her personality was perfect for this,” says Muench. “I had another Chihuahua who was friendly but was skittish. Elsa is not afraid; she enjoys her work. She doesn’t shake. Elsa does not make a peep; she’s just not a barker.” She earned her certification four months ago from Bright and Beautiful with a certificate and a red leash that says Bright And Beautiful. As a trained therapy dog, Elsa volunteers with hospice visiting patients one on one with

Muench. They also visit schools, hospitals and activity centers. In order to be certified, a dog must be at least one year old and pass certain criteria. Muench had been working with her since she

was eight weeks old. As a volunteer for hospice’s Bear Hugs program for the past eight years, Muench started bringing Elsa with her to the West Orange Hospice to see continued on page 2

Elsa Warms Hearts... continued from front page how she behaved around people. With the Bear Hugs program, Muench volunteers her time to create 14-inch stuffed memorial bears out of clothing for grieving families. When she had lost her job from cutbacks as a bookkeeper in Fairfield, “I saw hospice needed volunteers; I didn’t want to sit around,” Muench explains. “You have to prove you can sew,” which she says she learned in her high school home economics class. From there she also started to volunteer at the hospice thrift store in Montclair. Instead of leaving her new puppy at home while she volunteers full time, Muench decided to bring

four-pound Elsa along. “I knew Hospice has a Paws Program,” says Muench. “We started training her right away.” When she’d accompany Muench to hospice, she learned to go in the elevator and greet people, says Muench. “I trained her by making sure she was socialized.” She would also take Elsa to Inglemoore Nursing Home in Livingston for her training to work with wheelchairs and visit patients. After a year of training, Muench had to pay a fee and travel one hour away for Elsa’s certification test. She had to sit and stay; leave a pill and food on the floor, without touching it, if dropped. “If a group of peo-

ple are there she needs to stay,” says Muench. She also needs to remain calm and not get flustered if someone approaches with a wheelchair, cane and even crutches. She needs to know how to approach a wheelchair from the side. She was even tested to see how she responds to noisy pots and pans. Bright and Beautiful has a list on its website on what potential therapy dogs need to do in order to pass, says Muench. Once she passed, Muench registered Elsa with St. Barnabas Paws for Patients, earning her an orange leash. They so far visited Care One in Whippany spending one-on one time with a patient to provide compan-

ionship and support for patients. Elsa sits on the bed, gets treats, lays down, sits down. “They have a calming effect with patients,” says Muench. “Elsa goes in the bed, she just sleeps and the lady pets her.” “Sometimes we go on bereavement calls to caregivers who want to see a dog,” says Muench. “Having Elsa there breaks the ice for me,” and sometimes helps to strike up a conversation. I visit as well. ” They are scheduled to attend an AARP meeting Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at the senior citizen center in Livingston which will feature a program on therapy dogs. With two daughters grown and out on their own, Muench and Elsa

keep themselves busy through their volunteer work. “I just happened to like the program,” says Muench. “I like helping people; it’s rewarding to me. When I have a beautiful puppy who does so well with people, I love to share. “It’s very rewarding meeting the people,” says Muench. When Elsa is

Two Honored By JVS For Their Philanthropy

T

he Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest NJ honored two individuals for their outstanding philanthropic efforts during its annual dinner last month. On June 21, Ray Blau, of Short Hills, and Alan Sobel, of Sobel & Co, Livingston, were honored at Taste and Toast for continuously performing at the highest level to carry out the JVS mission of helping people to help themselves. Blau has volunteered at orphanages, was president of the Charles Bierman Home, a nonprofit assisted living facility for the indigent elderly, for more than 20 years, and traveled to many Third World countries. After coming in contact with numerous under-

privileged individuals, he realized that his purpose in life was to assist others. “Don’t worry about how people got to where they are – just help them,’’ he says. “Life is a tough contest. Learning how to help people help themselves is a good thing.” As founder and chair of Commercial Furniture Interiors, Blau even finds ways to give back through his business and donates to organizations 15 to 20 times each year. More recently, his company volunteered to help JVS of MetroWest New Jersey with the design, planning and logistics of a move to a new location. Blau has served on JVS’ board for four years and was initially drawn to the nonprofit once he saw the

great work it did for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Aside from JVS, he also serves on the boards for Daughters of Israel, The Michael Graves School of Architecture and the Hudson County School of Technology. Sobel & Co. is a public accounting firm that has not only consistently contributed to the growth of its clients, but has also helped nonprofit organizations and those in need through its notable philanthropic activities. The company founder, Sobel, has made it his firm’s mission to equally serve business and pro-bono clients with a set of core values that are the life of the firm. Sobel & Co. has supported the JVS of MetroWest NJ.

His nonprofit clients often ask Sobel why his firm chooses to assist them. His answer is that he and his

T

employees feel good about supporting those who do good and have a passion for helping local nonprofit

organizations achieve their missions of helping the world’s most vulnerable.

NCJW Essex Announces Late Summer Events

and make a difference in the life of a child. All registration is online. Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Treatments will be explained by Dr. Barry Citron, plastic surgeon on July 18 from 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participants will discuss the latest cosmetic and surgical treatments to look younger. IMPLANT DENTISTRY For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier. Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

Students Engage In Community Work

C

ounty College of Morris Professors Buffy Reilly and Therese Farmer, along with 12 CCM students from the nursing department and two medical students, took part in a service trip with Experience Mission to the School for Life, Gary, WV. The purpose of the journey was to enhance student learning about health effects in an environment of extreme poverty. The team engaged in activities, including demolition, construction, leveling, mulching and installing drainage pipes for a playground, visiting a nursing home, planting flowers and

interacting with the community. CCM students who participated said the experience was invaluable and they are interested in going again. Students who did not know one another before the trip bonded and learned to problem solve and overcome challenges, said Reilly. She noted that they also returned from the trip stronger, with a greater sense of physical, emotional and spiritual accomplishment. Reilly and Farmer plan to continue engaging with the community by conducting future student trips. Contacts have been made

within the Gary community, which will allow for a continued relationship between CCM and the School for Life. The students are planning a backpack drive for children in the area. The CCM students of the local coverage area of New View Media Group newspapers involved in this service trip were Tiffany Ramnanan of West Orange; Kerry Walsh of Long Valley; Bridgette Hillman of Whippany; Christina Pappas of Chester; Brittany Miller of Mt. Olive; Victorianna Belcastro of Mt. Olive; and Adrienne Antoniello of Whippany.

MCHS Features Cool Exhibit “Unfurling Femininity”

I

n the many centuries pre-air conditioning – or even electric fans, woman relied on their own energy to cool themselves. But their “appliances” of choice – fans and parasols -were far more eye-catching than any electric air cooler invented since. The Morris County Historical Society’s “Unfurling Femininity” exhibit at Acorn Hall began displaying a variety of 19th and 20th century fans, parasols and feminine accouterments decorated in American, European and Asian motifs on July 16. The exhibit continues through Aug.13.

Originally designed to help beat the heat of the ancient world, fans and parasols later became symbols of fashion, grace, elegance and wealth, a role they proudly maintained through the early 20th century. Displayed parasols and fans highlight craftsmanship and the wide variety of styles, materials, and sizes often employed in creating these genuine works of art. Timely for the hot and sunny summer season, “Unfurling Femininity” will present a wide variety of classy commodities made of silk, satin, lace, wood, papers, feathers,

mother of pearl, ivory and whalebone. In addition to seeing these treasures, visitors also will learn more about how women often used these items to enhance their feminine wiles. The museum is open Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission, which includes the exhibit and landscaped grounds, is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for students and free for children under 12 and MCHS members. For more information, call MCHS at 973-267-3465.

Donations Lost, Thrift Store Aborted- SOS Appeals For Financial Support And Volunteers

A

By Cheryl Conway vacated plan to open a second thrift store may have dimmed its hope for a brighter future, but the battered women’s shelter organization still hangs on to survive. Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS), a non-profit program serving homeless/battered women and children for more than four decades, had planned to open up a second thrift store in Passaic as early as January this past year. The store, Treasures Two, was going to feature furniture and clothing sales, with proceeds to cover the mortgage and utility costs incurred in operating a seven-facility shelter. Plans to open the store

at 919 Main Ave. in Passaic were stalled when the landlord was told he needed to provide a fire suppression system. In the meantime SOS was paying for storage space for months to house furniture and clothing received from generous donators. When the date to open the store was pushed to March, then April, SOS decided it could not wait any longer for the space to be available as they were losing too much money to rent the storage space. “That store won’t be ready for months,” says Sandra Ramos of Ringwood, founder and executive director of SOS. Edee Galzan, volunteer administrative director of

SOS says “SOS was losing money in storage and we couldn’t afford it.” To make matters worse, when SOS announced it had to pull out, the store’s landlord did not refund SOS all of its money owed to them. “He didn’t give us back all our money,” says Ramos. “He owes us $4,000. We paid three and a half months rent, security deposit.” When SOS stopped paying the rent for the storage space, it soon lost all of its beautiful donations, says Ramos. “It’s a gimmick,” says Ramos. The monthly storage rent had increased from $30 to $300. “We got really nice stuff,” and now it is

gone. “Wonderful merchandise over $7,000,” says Galzan. “We lost it. We had to let it go. We signed something; if you are not able to pay, they are allowed to sell it.” With one step forward and two steps back, SOS continues its appeal for monetary donations, volunteers and necessary items to keep the shelters open. With restricted monies coming in, the organization has been in jeopardy of closing its doors to hundreds of women and children. Established in 1977 as Shelter Our Sisters – Ramos began the first shelter for battered women in North America out of her three

services, schools; and run the thrift store and day care centers. SOS is currently down to seven facilities located in Newfoundland, Wanaque and West Milford, providing shelter to 150 women and children, with more calling every day. Relying on monetary support and understanding lenders has paved the way toward SOS’s shaky survival. One Livingston business person- who had given SOS $35,000 to support the second thrift store and help pay for the shelter’s utility fees- issued another $9,000 to SOS for its troubles. Ramos also managed to get the shelter’s mortgage continued on page 14

bedroom home in Hackensack as early as 1970. The organization changed its name to Strengthen Our Sisters and grew as big as eight houses, two day care centers, a food pantry and a thrift store. The mission of SOS is to break the cycle of domestic violence, poverty and abuse by restoring balance and harmony through individual empowerment. To support her organization, Ramos receives limited money from sources such as the Passaic County Dept. of Human Services and private donations. Ramos currently has 17 nonpaid volunteers who drive shelter residents to look for jobs and attend court, doctor appointments, social

reduced from $800K to $499K. “Edee’s very organized; we are paying all our bills and trying to hold on,” says Ramos. “She’s organizing the one store.” “We do have a truck now,” says Ramos, to pick up donations. Money is needed for storage of any furniture donations, as well as money for gas to put in the truck. Ramos had been counting on $30,000 from a United Way grant but that was denied when SOS didn’t have its audit completed in time, she says. “Keeping seven shelters running is no joke,” says Ramos. SOS is $73,000 behind in the monies owed to PSEG and operating costs.

Losing the second thrift store, “This really set us back. “We are still accruing bills,” says Ramos. “They are allowing us to stay open; they see we are making an effort. They could have cut us off a long time ago.” While donations are appreciated, Galzan says SOS needs to reorganize its one thrift store for more space before accepting any furniture or large items. Financial donations to help pay for the mortgage and utilities is SOS’s greatest need, as well as volunteers to drive the residents to appointments, work at the store and shelters and landscape the properties. Other immediate items include large black con-

tractor garbage bags, toilet paper, cleaning products, non-perishable food, fresh fruits and vegetables, beds, a power lawn mower and weed whacker. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1089, Hewitt, N.J., 07421; or call 973831-6156. Those willing to donate can also go to gofundme.com/strengthenoursisters. Another option is to visit SOS’s thrift store, Treasures, at 196 Lincoln Ave., West Milford. In existence for 30 years, Treasures is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call the store at 862-248-9935 for more information. The Debate: Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids vs. In-Office Hearing Evaluations & Fittings

ecent debates surrounding the Over-theCounter Hearing Aid Act of 2017 (OTC) have made headlines in the hearing healthcare industry. The OTC Act makes certain types of “personal sound amplification products” (PSAP) available to adults with mild or moderate hearing impairment without the need for a professional evaluation. Hearing healthcare professionals have conflicting views on whether having this type of accessibility would be more harmful than beneficial to someone suffering from hearing loss. The cost of PSAPs range in cost from $250$350 which is considerately cheaper than purchasing hearing aids, which can cost in the thousands. With hearing aids becoming more discrete and technologically advanced, their capabilities and benefits are also becoming more attractive to consumers; but the cost associated with purchasing a pair can make them less accessible to some. Naturally, having the option to purchase a personal sound amplification product overthe-counter would be more appealing to someone who needs the help but is on a tight budget. However, the question arises: does this immediate affordability come at a larger long-term cost? Audiologists and hearing healthcare providers at Hearing Health USA (HHUSA) explain that offering a “one size fits all” solution can do more harm than good for those suffering from hearing loss. Each patient requires various levels of care, and by purchasing over-the-counter hearing amplifiers, patients miss out on the customized solutions that they would receive from getting a full hearing evaluation followed by a proper fitting. Hearing aids are significantly more advanced than PSAPs, and need to be programmed by a hearing care professional with

the exact hearing loss needs of an individual. They can even be adjusted periodically to fit the progression of a patient’s hearing loss over time. For someone with moderate hearing loss, using a PSAP will not give them the customized help they really need. Hearing aids purchased from a network such as HHUSA also come with in-office support and maintenance that long surpasses the initial purchase, which is something PSAPs do not offer. If a hearing aid is properly cared for and maintained it can last anywhere from 4-7 years, and the professionals at Hearing Health USA offer care and maintenance for the lifetime of your device. The fear of hearing healthcare providers is that skipping the professional hearing services will lead to poorer outcomes, and will eventually decrease the overall use of hearing aids or assistive devices. Hearing loss is commonly seen as an unwelcomed signed of aging, which is why four out of five adults already ignore the signs and symptoms. Professionals feel that it is impossible for someone to self-diagnose the correct level of hearing loss. Considering that stud-

ies have found untreated hearing loss to be tied to the decline of cognitive functions, memory loss, and even Alzheimer’s Disease, the hearing healthcare professionals at Hearing Health USA are worried about the damage this approach might cause. Hearing Health USA is a network of over 100 reputable clinics in the United States. Their hearing healthcare professional’s expertise and compassionate approach has allowed them to positively influence the life and hearing health of over 180,000 patients since their first location’s grand opening in 2014. Their local office, American Hearing Centers in Livingston, NJ, is located at 340 East Northfield Rd., Suite 2D and is now accepting new patients! Call 973-946-8899 today to make an appointment for a free hearing screening. The hearing health care professionals at Hearing Health USA encourage you to splurge a little when it comes to your hearing; it’s one thing you don’t want to take the budgeted approach with. Remember that an investment in your hearing is an investment in your quality of life!
