Thus far, Gantman and his friend and partner in the project, Noah Kates, have set up three bookcases (aka free libraries): one near Riker Hill Elementary School, another on the walking path on the Oval next to the Livingston
or 17-year-old Livingston High School senior, Benjamin Gantman, all it took was a stroll to instill the idea in his mind.

“I came up with the idea to install free libraries in Livingston when I visited my cousins in South Orange,” Gantman says. “We went on a walk through their neighborhood and passed by many bookcases in public parks and in front of houses. During that trip, I was able to take a book home for free and thought it would be great if I could do the same thing where I live in Livingston.” Also, there’s his love for reading. “I read everyday before bed, and it has been a habit for me since elementary school. I just recently finished and thoroughly enjoyed The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, which I actually got from one of our bookcases.”
Gantman decided to devote his time to this project because he wanted to make a contribution to the community in Livingston. He explains in detail why. “I think a lot of benefits can come from a project like this, because it has the potential to bring people closer together by enabling them to share books with each other,” he says. “Additionally, from what I have seen, most people could spend a little more time reading.”
While more traditional high school lacrosse power programs might try to poach a player of Bagolie’s caliber, he said he is happy right where he is at the moment. And has no plans to go elsewhere.
“I love my high school, I love my club program,” Bagolie said. “This was a banner year for us (Livingston). We hosted a playoff game, and lost in the quarterfinals to Ridgewood (9-6).”
“I was very honored to be picked for that (event),” said Bagolie, who began playing the sport with Livingston’s Super Scoopers program in kindergarten. “Some of the best kids in the country were there (at the showcase). I played hard and well to play in the showcase.”
“They (players) were fast, the game was fast,” he recalled. “I just had to play the way I know how. I haven’t faced shots that fast before. Once I got used to it, I was fine.”
Bagolie has faced hard shots and tough competition in the past. But this was a different animal for him at first. However, he adjusted and adapted to the fast-paced style of play.
It was a competitive national showcase, which required coaches to vote you in, for some of the best class of 2025 uncommitted, talented lacrosse players in the country. The players, from areas such as California, Florida, Texas and Colorado, were broken up into six teams, which squared off in three games.
Sure, he saw limited in-game action in net (five saves and one goal against in one game). But last season’s experience has paid dividends, as he played in the Matt Chandik OnePercent Lacrosse Showcase All-Star game at the Proving Grounds in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, in July.
It gave Bagolie the opportunity to practice with the seniors and learn from Coyne.
“They (coaches) got to see how you stacked up against the better competition,’’ Rick said. “Frank played well.”
The rising sophomore, however, has his eyes set on earning the starting goalie position at Livingston next season, and will continue to put in the work to earn college recruiting recognition.“I’mready for it,” he said of battling for the starting high school goalie position at Livingston. “I’m happy with the way I’ve played. I’m confident with both teams that I’m getting good looks.”
Bagolie, who also suits up for the Patriot Elite Chrome club team, took pride in the All-Star selection, and said it was due to his unyielding dedication to his craft.

The National Cancer Institute notes that many cancer survivors have indicated that information and support was abundant during their treatment. However, once treatment stopped, a new wave of questions and uncertainty soon emerged. For example, the NCI points out that many cancer survivors recognize that life after treatment is less about “getting back to normal” than it is about discovering the new normal. In fact, the Memorial Sloan Ketting Cancer Center reports that most people indicate it takes between six and 12 months after they complete chemotherapy before they truly feel like themselves again.
The road to recovery from cancer may be filled with uncertainty. But cancer survivors should recognize that millions before them have survived the disease and gone on to live full, happy lives. A patient approach to recovery can help cancer survivors overcome any obstacles they may encounter along the way.
cancer survivors typically return to the doctor every three to four months during the first two to three years after treatment. After that, survivors may see their doctors once or twice a year. Follow-up care is vital for cancer survivors, as it provides their doctors an opportunity to determine if patients are experiencing any side effects from treatment. These appointments also allow doctors to determine if the cancer has returned or spread to other parts of the body. In addition, follow-up visits provide an opportunity for cancer survivors to bring up any symptoms or questions they might have. Patients can ask about ways to reduce their risk of cancer recurrence and seek advice on getting back to normal, including how quickly they can begin exercising and how to approach new fitness regimens if they were inactive prior to diagnosis.

Follow-up care also is a vital part of recovering from cancer. The NCI notes that
The Road to Recovery Continues After Cancer Treatment Ends
The American Cancer Society reports that the five-year survival rate for all cancers combined that were diagnosed between 2009 and 2015 was 67 percent. That’s a noteworthy and encouraging statistic, though global figures compiled by Ourworldindata.org indicate that five-year survival rates following diagnosis are significantly lower in poorer countries. In addition, the road to recovery for cancer patients typically does not end when treatments are completed.

In fact, the last hole took over two hours to dig because of large rocks and concrete that was in the way.” Then there’s the fact that Gantman and Kates had been building their own bookcases. ”The first bookcase I built took several months to finish because I didn’t have as much experience, and I was building it from scratch. This is advantageous in terms of price and it allows us to make bigger, custom bookcases. However, it is very effort and time-consuming, so we have recently shifted to buying models online. We still paint these bookcases, but it allows us to work more efficiently and install more libraries.” Gantman, who plans to study engineering in college, has tried to incorporate some engineering and design principles that he’s learned in school. “We have installed solar powered lighting inside the libraries that turns on at night, and 3D print signs with the name of our organization.”

been very positive for his and Kates’ project. “I have received many messages on Facebook and from neighbors saying that they enjoy having access to these bookcases,” Gantman states. “Even while working on installing them, people walking by have stopped and told me that they liked the idea. Ultimately, I want to get more students involved in the program so that when we leave LHS, the libraries will continue to get maintained and the project will continue to grow.”

The duo decided on the locations based on where they had permission to place a library, the amount of foot-traffic in those specific areas, and the locations of other libraries. Gantman says, “We try to find areas that the most people will walk through and are able to conveniently access the bookcases. We also try to spread the libraries apart so they are not concentrated in one area of Livingston.” In addition to the mind work, there’s the physical as well. “To set the bookcases up, we dig a 2-foot hole, plant a wooden post, and mount the library on top with screws and supportive braces. Also, the rocky soil here in Livingston makes it very time consuming to dig

That summer, I worked full time at the A&P. I saved every penny that I could. And, as the dawn of September became closer, I prepared myself to depart from the old Mabey Homestead. To live away from loved ones and good friends. It was an emotional time, filled with a bit of sadness and yet also a time of hope for new adventures waiting to unfold.

n June of 1973, at the age of 19, I graduated with an Associate of Arts degree from County College of Morris. It was a tough two years for me. But, it was also a very fulfilling time. I had been stretched like a rubber band. And, I came through it all a wiser and stronger individual.
I worked at a grocery store, during my years at Sherman College. Like my days at CCM, I found it all so tough, but also very rewarding.

I took my studies very seriously and managed to make the Dean’s List, for all four semesters at CCM. I also wrote weekly columns and articles for Youngtown Edition, the official college newspaper of CCM. It was a tough time. But I enjoyed every minute of it.
All through my time at County College of Morris, I worked 29 hours a week at the A&P grocery store in Whippany. There were times when I worked the night shift, from 11:00 at night till 7:00 in the morning. I would punch out from work, climb up the stairs to the rest room, wash my face, wash up a bit and change my shirt. Then, I would buy a cinnamon bun at the A&P and drive off to CCM for an 8:00 class. I remember my class would

During my time at CCM, I went to a local chiropractor to get my spine adjusted on a regular basis. My chiropractor encouraged me to go to chiropractic school, so I applied to Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg,
I confess that I did not find chiropractic school easy. Specifically, I had a tough time with chemistry. In chiropractic college, a student is required to take one semester of inorganic chemistry, two semesters of organic chemistry, and two semesters of biochemistry.

“What happened was the last two years, I was in the process of writing the 100th anniversary book, but the libraries were all closed for 18 months,” explains Tom Cooney, he the 22-year President of the Livingston Fire Department. “You could only go online or take books out by picking them up at the door. And you couldn’t have any events to celebrate; you couldn’t have any gatherings.”
Following a November 1921 meeting of the Livingston Gun Club, the Livingston Fire Department was formed, and discussion ensued regarding how best to provide fire protection. 12 fire extinguishers were purchased, and members back then grabbed them when there was a fire. To alert the department, residents would go to the nearest of 18 metal rings installed by the town and hit them with a hammer, loud

different categories - first prize, second prize, etc., and when the parade is over and we get to Memorial Park by the high school, we are going to have a town wide celebration. Also, every year we do a fire prevention open house for all of the kids in town, and that’s usually at fire headquarters. But this year, in anticipation of most of the kids coming out to see the parade, we’re going to do it at the high school. The activities will take place over by the gazebo in the corner by Livingston Avenue. We plan on having all of the Livingston apparatus along with the first aid ambulances set up like we normally do at headquarters for displays and for fire prevention programs. We’re also going to have portable games, a couple of rides, a bounce house, a trackless train ride, a big blowup slide - all sorts of things. We’ll have historical displays, and we’re going to have a couple of surprises, I’m sure. We’re still working on things.”
Fast forward to the current year, and the Livingston Fire Department is planning a town-wide event on Saturday, October 1 (rain date is October 8), and part of the festivities will be the resurrection of an old favorite event which hasn’t been held since 1979.In the morning on that day, a fire apparatus parade will kick things off. “We’re trying to get as many fire trucks, both antique and modern, as we can possibly gather from the towns, and the parade will go from Livingston Center to the (Livingston) high school,” says Cooney. “We have posted the parade to the other departments as what’s called a ‘muster,’ which is also a gathering after the parade where all of the equipment is judged. We’ll have trophies for

It was not until 1923 that the department, after being allotted $3,500 by the Township Committee, bought a REO Chassis and, via a loan from the Newark Fire Department, mounted a horse drawn chemical truck. Shortly thereafter, Livingston Center property was donated,

Penny and I had began dating, the summer of 1969, when I had just finished my sophomore year at Boonton High School. Our parents were both members of the Trailmates Chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association. About twice a month, the members of this club would go camping at a New Jersey state park. Some of their favorite places to camp included Swartswood, Stokes, and Allaire StatePennyParks.was a year younger than me. So, when I began my freshman year of college,
Penny was a senior at Eastside High School in Paterson. Penny and I were best friends. We both enjoyed writing poetry, we were both avid readers, and Penny was always encouraging me to put my feelings and thoughts down on paper. Penny was an important person in my coming of age, in my last two years at Boonton High School.

I always cherished having Teresa in my tennis class and having breakfast with her after tennis classes. Part of me always wanted to ask Teresa for a date, or at the very least, ask her for her telephone number. But I had this strong inner feeling that it would be all so wrong, that I needed to be true blue to Penny.
I had signed up for a tennis course. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, beginning at 8:00 sharp my tennis class would begin. There was a young woman in my class, Teresa, whom I became good friends with. It was a most strange time for me. Because I was still dating my high school sweetheart, Penny Lancaster.

But now I was developing a close friendship with Teresa. After our tennis class was over, Teresa and I would go to the college cafeteria and have breakfast together. It was all such a quaint and charming friendship. However, it left me feeling very guilty and confused, for I was developing heart-felt feelings for Teresa. And, sadly, Penny and I were finding that we had less and less time to see each other. For at the time, I was attending CCM full time and working 29 hours a week at the A&P.

In June of 1972, I completed my first year of college. Penny graduated, with high honors, from Eastside High School. That summer, Penny pretty much only talked about looking forward to attending Rutgers University in September. She had become more and more obsessed with an immense

In September of 1972, Penny began attending Rutgers University. We would write each other, but within a couple of months, our letters to each other became further and further apart. It was in the very month of September of 1972, that I did see Teresa in the student center. We sat and talked for a short time. Teresa talked and talked about the wonderful boy she had met during the summer. There was a certain sadness that filled my heart when I saw a spark in her Teresa’s eyes as she talked about her new boyfriend. Part of me deeply regrated never having asked Teresa for her phone number, when we were close friends, the year before.
helped me to overcome my shyness. She encouraged me to join the staff of my high school newspaper. When I began my studies at CCM, new people began to come into my life. Sadly, between attending CCM, doing homework, and working at the A&P, there was less and less time to see Penny. Hold dear to the friends in your life. But know that sometimes, there comes a time when the best gift you can give a friend, is to let them go and move on to new vistas in their life. It isn’t easy. And, yes, it does hurt. But truly, sometimes people come into our life for a very specific purpose. And sadly, when they have fulfilled that purpose, they may need to move on and no longer be a close friend. Among the almost 30 named countries on Msgr. Fuhrman’s list thus far are Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, and many more. “It’s a great way to celebrate the Catholic faith,” he says, “which is, by nature, perfect for the wide variety of nationalities. It’s the universal Church. The Catholic Church is the church that’s open to all. We want to know our parishioners and celebrate the great gifts that each of them brings from different parts of the world, proving that the Catholic faith is universal and unified. Unity is what we pray for all the time.”

Saint Philomena Pastor Seeks to Learn the Variety of Nations Represented at His Parish
Msgr. Robert Fuhrman
By Steve Sears
Msgr. Fuhrman’s initial plan when ultimately closing the project was to post the list for all to read. But, will the project really ever be finished? “Is it a thing that we could continually add to as the years go by?” Fuhrman asks. “Yes, why not? I would like to get as full a list as we can and then simply celebrate. Not many parishes have this variety, and that’s what I want to bring into the Msgr.light.”Fuhrman serves the Saint Philomena congregation with two other priests, Reverend Denis Surban, who is from the Philippines, and Reverend Matthew Eraly, who hails from India and is chaplain of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Orange.
Born and raised in Dumont, Msgr. Fuhrman attended the College Seminary at Seton Hall University. After also attending Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, he was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1981 by Archbishop Peter L. Gerety. First assigned to Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Union from 1981 to 1987, he has also served as priest secretary to then-Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick (1987 to 1990), ViceRector of Immaculate Conception Seminary from 1990 to 1993, and then Rector of the undergraduate College Seminary, Saint Andrew’s Hall at Seton Hall University, from 1993 to 1997. In December of 1997, Monsignor Fuhrman was named pastor of Saint Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Saddle River, where he served for 12 ½ years. Following his time there, he was in September 2014 appointed pastor of Saint Philomena Parish by Archbishop John J. Myers. Msgr. Fuhrman is current Chairman of the Board of Catholic Charities for the Newark Archdiocese.

real wealth is the people.”
Saint Philomena Parish has 2,100 registered families. “It’s a joy to serve, and to serve people from around the world in one location here in Livingston,” Msgr. Fuhrman says with enthusiasm. “It’s very special to me, and this little project has become a fascinating, enjoyable experience.
Saint Philomena Roman Catholic Church is located at 386 South Livingston Avenue in Livingston. For more information, visit www. stphilomena.org.
“When I got here, I noticed our parish is very diverse,” Msgr. Fuhrman says. “Part of that may be because of the hospitals at Saint Barnabas, Overlook, and Morristown –we have a lot of medical people here – but aside from that, we have a lot of nationalities represented. Without even pressing it, I just put the announcement out there (in the parish bulletin).”
Robert Fuhrman, Pastor of Livingston’s Saint Philomena Roman Catholic Parish since 2014, recently began an interesting project. He’s collecting names of the nations that his parishioners hail from.
Msgr. Fuhrman asked his parishioners to tell him, write down, or in any ether way contact him and give him their information. As of August 1, his total had reached 28 countries. “I just wanted to know our parish as well as I can; know our people, know our parishioners,” he states. “I’ve always thought that this is a special place. Every parish is special, but one of the features of ours is the multi-national nature of it. And I just thought at some point recently, let me just ask them (his parishioners) to tell us where they’re from, just to have a list and let them know how diverse our parish is.”

I feel proud that we have members of our parish family from dozens of countries, more countries than I expected, to be honest. This reflects the nature of the Church since the apostles first set out on their missionary journeys. This diversity is healthy and beautiful. From various parts of the world, we share the same faith. The multiple ethnic backgrounds here reflect both the Church and our great American nation. I am very thankful.”

since I was a child, I wanted to be a writer. I’ve been writing for different publications in New Jersey, including this one for several years. However, my dream has always been to complete a book that adds something of value to the community.
The love a family can provide to someone suffering from OCD or any mental illness can help immensely. This book is aimed primarily at those who are in pain, their families, and professionals serving this population as well.
If anyone would like to purchase an autographed copy, I
In the past, I have worked with a variety of families throughout New Jersey, forming and working with them in support groups. There is no magic pill, and this book is not going to solve all problems associated with the illness. However, I sincerely hope it lends a compassionate and compelling voice to the mental health community.
I am trying to tell a good story but at the same time,

To give back more to the community, a portion of these sales will go towards mental health groups fighting stigma.
Ever
At this point, I have started under the tutelage of Livingston Author and Entrepreneur Barry Farber to place my books in non-traditional settings. For example, I am in the process of seeking partnerships with cafes and restaurants to place my book by the register rather than having it get lost in a bookstore surrounded by thousands of other books. At these locations, I will be providing signed copies of the book along with brochures and other information about mental health.
That changed everything and, in my book, “Family Illness,” this beautiful story is told. My father passed away from Covid in 2020 and I never got the chance to present him with a copy. This book was intended to be my way of letting my Dad know he was my hero, and that I never would have survived without his love.
provide comfort as well. I have been touched by the outpouring of support from therapists who specialize in OCD treatment. One such local psychotherapist said “Evan’s writing style makes his book enjoyable and eye opening for people struggling with OCD, their family members and clinicians in mental health. Evan’s story can resonate with thousands of people suffering from OCD.”
My father who taught at several universities throughout New Jersey including Ramapo College and Saint Peters University grew up in a time when mental health was not discussed and was forced to live in silence for a great period of time. I believe our society has made significant progress, but we still have great strides to make.
Unfortunately, since I was a child, I’ve suffered immensely from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) which has taken its toll on both me and my family. There were a lot of things I wanted to accomplish in my life that got sidetracked due to this illness which is all too prevalent.
For me, the turning point came when as a young adult, my father confided in me that he had OCD and was still able to make a good life for himself. He also told me he would always love me and believed I could get better.

Norwescap: A Portfolio of Services to Help Those in Need
by Elsie Walker
Norwescap provides a computer lounge, volunteers who tutor and provide a willing ear to listen (when needed), an on-site food pantry and information on Norwescap services. Valli shared that analysis done has shown that those who participate in the Degree Up program are much more likely than their counterparts to complete their studies and matriculate. “It shows you that sometimes you really just need a little support to help you get through….. most community college kids are probably holding a job somewhere. They have other things going on, so having a little bit of support to
Norwescap offers services in the area of education with early childhood education, child care, and the Sussex County Community College “Degree Up” program being some examples. “[We are] the leading early childhood education non-profit in the northwest corner of the state. We are a major Head Start provider,” noted Valli. Norwescap has Head Start centers scattered around four different counties. “[Also,] we are the childcare resource referral agency for three counties so anybody who needs childcare can call us and ask for advice. People who are having a hard time paying for childcare can call us and apply for a subsidy,” In addition, “every licensed child care provider in our footprint gets training, technical assistance, and support,” shared Valli. However, it is not just the educational needs of young children that Norwescap helps. Another example of its services in the Degree Up program. Valli shared that “a good percentage of community college students are struggling financially.”
While the organization helps those in poverty, Valli noted that a large percentage of those it helps are ALICEs: Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed. That means that they are people who are working but are just one payment, one illness, one paycheck away from struggling. Valli noted that though people may come to the organization with one need, their situation is such that they usually have more needs. Norwescap is not

woman had two cigarettes, her kid in the car, nowhere to live and didn’t know where to go. Another woman, who had left her job to be a stayat-home mom and was suddenly abandoned by her husband, needed to get back into the workforce and was looking for help. Struggling students at Sussex County Community College needed tutoring and other support, and low-income families were missing out on tax refunds because they needed guidance in completing their tax returns. These are just a few of the examples of people helped by Norwescap, a non-profit organization. Started as part of the war on poverty during the Johnson administration, Norwescap is a $22,000,000 comprehensive non-profit social service organization dedicated to serving people and moving them from a place of being in poverty, or on the verge of poverty, to the point where they and their families are thriving. It also helps people advocate for their communities and much more. Serving Hunterdon, Warren, Morris, Somerset and Sussex counties, Norwescap ’s corporate office is at 350 Marshall Street in Phillipsburg. Recently, Mark Valli, Norwescap’s CEO, talked about the organization and gave just a few examples of the services provided through the six strategic areas which Norwescap helps: education, employment, health and nutrition, financial capacity building, housing and energy service, and volunteer and civic engagement.

just one program but a portfolio of services. About 90% of its funding comes from the government (federal, state, county, and municipal) and 10% from donors and grants. The latter helps in funding programs where participation might have been restricted by government rules.
A fifth area Norwescap helps with is housing and community development. Valli said this area touches on everything to do with housing from homeless prevention programs to rental assistance and much more. He noted that in the borough of Sussex, Norwescap runs an 11 -unit senior housing complex. It also does housing counseling, helping people save for a home, providing them with information on how to get to that point where they’re able to purchase their own home. Also, Norwescap provides supplemental support to help those having problems paying utility bills, getting a tank of oil, air conditioning, etc.
“When a community is engaged, you get better health outcomes,” shared Valli as he started to talk about the last strategic area in which Norwescap offers help: Volunteerism and Civic Engagement. “We help people to advocate for themselves, advocate for their communities.” He noted that through a tax credit program, Norwescap was able to purchase a single-family home which had been an abandoned lodgings bar, renovate it and will be turning it over in a couple of months to a low income family. “So that’s taking what was a vacant home for over a dozen years in downtown Phillipsburg …on the main track, by the way, making it into a viable home, helping to improve not just the family’s asset but also to help improve the neighborhood,” said Valli. In addition, he shared, “We did more than that. We’ve been able to purchase banners and flags to help market businesses and put planters in downtown Phillipsburg.” Norwescap has also organized community get- togethers and organized community events. Right now, the focus has been on Phillipsburg but that will be expanded. One of Valli’s favorite stories is how Norwescap was able to help small businesses when they were shut down due to COVID-19. “We were able to access funding from the state to provide direct grants, over $500,000 in direct grants, to small businesses to keep them afloat…. to pay their utility bills, to be able to help pay their rent, able to help pay for PPE and other things, so we literally invested half a million dollars in small businesses …to keep them alive during COVID-19.” In addition, some of that money went to helping businesses establish an online presence and e-commerce so they could pivot the way they were doing business. Also, Norwescap has a variety of volunteer opportunities including ones through Americorps and AmeriCorps seniors. People can find out more about those by looking at the Norwescap website.

Norwescap also helps with financial capacity building, improving the financial well-being of low income individuals and families. Valli shared two of the programs that fall under that. One program, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), offers free tax help to low-moderate income individuals and families, including young adults, adults, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and those with limited English. Another program helps participants to open a savings account, with Norwescap matching the funds put into it, to save for a purchase of a major asset like a home.

Another area Norwescap addresses is employment. Valli talked about the Career and Life Transitions Center and the Pathways 2 Prosperity program. A Career and Life Transitions Center helps those who haven’t been in the workforce for a while or are entering it for the first time or need to upscale. Valli noted that one example of a person who graduated the program is a woman now on the Norwescap board. “She had three kids, all of whom had special needs. Her husband, at some point, decided that that was too much for him and he left, and then she had a struggle…[to] figure out on her own [what to do]. She had left a career in New York to raise her family and now she’s on her own, and so she didn’t know where to turn. She called her Career and Life Transitions Center, didn’t do anything for a few months, and then called again.” Valli notes that the woman, though shy at first, completed the program and built her network (through peer-to-peer sharing and support) and is now pursuing a career in corporate America. Another program, Pathways 2 Prosperity, in Sussex County, is peer-networking where a group meets once a week for dinner to work on personal and professional goals and to help each other.
resources through its Health Connections program.
Health and nutrition are areas many know Norwescap for. It has a food bank, which means that it is a distribution center. It supplies food to food pantries and soup kitchens in Sussex, Warren, and Hunterdon counties. Norwescap provides about two million pounds of food per year. Another example of what it does in the area of health and nutrition is WIC. “We are the WIC (Women, Infants, Children) provider in four counties,” shared Valli. Norwecap provides supplemental nutritional assistance to women who are either pregnant or who have kids all the way through age five. Additional services include health screenings, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, including lactation consultant services, and referrals to health and social services. Another of the ways Norwescap helps is by providing education on chronic diseases and access to free cancer screenings and other healthcare
Valli noted that for those in need, it is easy to get help. All they have to do is click on the green “Get Assistance” button the homepage of the website. Norwescap’s website is www.norwescap.org.

“I get excited walking in the beautiful historic house that John Russell Pope built,” Lagle says. “His architecture is just absolutely incredible. Even just walking up the driveway, you feel very excited. But then, just walking in and celebrating the history of the game - the very rich history - not only of the game itself, but the amazing people that have played the game over the last 125 years.”

Between 4,000 to 8,000 people annually enter through the doors and walk the halls of the oldest sports museum in the United States. “We predate Cooperstown, the Baseball Hall of Fame, by a couple of years,” says Lagle. “When you walk into the museum, you do have the Hall of Champions, which is that beautiful rotunda where we have all of the original USGA trophies, and where we celebrate each of our champions on bronze panels circling the room. But then we also have a really nice permanent gallery that tells the story of golf here in the United States, beginning in the late 19th century to the present day.” There are also individual rooms dedicated to golfing greats Bobby Jones, Mickey Wright, Arnold Palmer, and the newest addition, the Jack Nicklaus wing, which was

USGA Executive Committee member, Chicago’s George Blossom, Jr., suggested the idea of creating a golf museum. “At the time in 1935, there was very little space to store or display the artifacts,” Lagle explains. “What they did in the 1930s and 1940s is actually displayed a lot of the artifacts throughout the office space.
