elbarton School in Morristown is pleased to exhibit the photographs of artist/photographer Judi Benvenuti during the “Benevenuti in Italia” exhibit in the Delbarton Fine Arts Center from Nov. 14 to Jan. 13. All images are for sale with 20 percent of the profits donated to the Civil Protection Department which continues to be instrumental in helping Italian earthquake victims. Benvenuti is a freelance photographer based in Mendham and has been taking pictures since she first picked up the family’s box camera decades ago in East Orange where she was raised. As the technology of photography and film evolved, so too did Benvenuti’s skills. After receiving a degree at College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, Benvenuti earned fine arts master credits at Columbia University Teachers College, then moved to Europe where she taught in Department of Defense schools in Germany and the UK. Her images of Festivals in Europe were published in National Geographic School Edition and inspired an even deeper passion for photography. Benvenuti studied with renowned photographers Ansel Adams in Yosemite, and George Tice, Robert Mapplethorpe and Lynn Davis in NYC. She began her freelance business and the National Park Service commissioned her to produce the book, “Morristown the War Years 1775-1793.” Benvenuti has participated in numerous one woman exhibits and group shows throughout the metropolitan area. For 15 years, she was an adjunct professor of photography at Drew University.
Her current exhibit, “Benvenuti in Italia,” filled with stunning photos of Venice and Tuscany, could easily be renamed ‘Italia by Phone.’ After many years in the darkroom developing her technical skills, Benvenuti made the leap to digital photography. In fact, every image in this current show were taken with a – “brace yourself” iPhone6 smartphone! The Delbarton community and area residents are invited to attend the opening reception on Nov. 14 at the Delbarton School.

ourt Appointed Special Advocates of Morris and Sussex Counties (CASA) recently received a $5,000 grant award from the Morristown Rotary Club. The grant was awarded in support of CASA’s Fostering Futures Program. This award will allow the child advocacy organization to purchase and distribute essential items for 14-21 year olds in foster care who are in this program. ment of our work on behalf of abused and neglected children and youth in the community.” CASA’s mission is achieved through the recruitment, screening, train-
ing, and supervision of community volunteers who commit to become powerful voices for these vulnerable children within the court system. CASA volunteers work one-on-one with an abused or neglected child, advocating for his or her best interests. Essentially, CASA volunteers “speak up” for these children in the court and child welfare systems, making sure they are
safe and well-cared for, are receiving the services they need, and are placed in a permanent, safe, nurturing home as quickly as possible. The Morristown Rotary’s mission is to pursue the concept of “Service above Self,” and expresses its hope that this grant award will make our community a better place for its children.

Freeholders Recognize Eagle Scout’s Vision Project
he Morris County Board of Freeholders recently honored an Eagle Scout from Morristown for an ambitious scout project that has made it easier for vision impaired people to traverse Morristown High School, and for calling attention to the issue of blindness and vision impairment in general. The freeholders presented a certificate of achievement to Andrew Chin of Scout Troop 228 in Morristown for his accomplishment. The scout, a senior at Morristown High School, was joined by his family at the ceremony, held at the Board of Freeholders’ Sept. 28 meeting in Morristown, to celebrate the positive achievements of this young county resident. Earlier on Wednesday, the freeholders’ declared October as Blindness Awareness Month in Morris County to call attention to the issues facing many county residents who have impaired vision. The freeholders praised Chin for completing the
service project that earned him the Eagle Scout designation, which is attained by less than four percent of Boy Scouts nationwide. “This is a remarkable young man who has really made a difference in his high school community, helping to raise awareness among young people of the needs of people with sight issues, but to also show them the incredible assets this group of people bring to our community,’’ said Freeholder Director Kathy DeFillippo. For his Eagle Scout project. Andrew raised funds to install federally compliant Braille signs throughout Morristown High School to make the school more ac-
cessible to blind and visually impaired persons, like himself. He subsequently organized a Blindness Awareness Day program at the high school where more than a dozen exhibitors, such as Seeing Eye and the N.J. Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, promoted awareness of vision issues and daily living solutions for blind and visually impaired persons. Andrew is an honors student and member of the National Honor Society, and also is a member of the Morristown High School swim team and runs track and field. Additionally, he is a peer counselor and a Bonner Scholar.

Morris Plains Schools Move Ahead With Projects

orris Plains residents overwhelmingly supported two referenda for building improvements to the two public schools in the borough. The two ballot questions were for major improvements to the schools for different reasons. A question seeking $5.21 million to upgrade energy efficiency and other issues was passed by a 670 to 246 margin. The second sought $1.03 million to bring Americans with Disabilities Act compliance to the auditorium at Borough School. “We put a lot of energy into publicizing the referenda,” Superintendent of Schools Mark Maire said. He said he was happy with the overwhelming support of the voters. The need for ADA compliance for the auditorium kicked in when it was found a large number of the seats needed to be replaced, the superintendent
explained. So many are broken the district will replace all of them on the main level, Maire said. The auditorium in the 1923 building seats 400. “We are building several platforms,” Maire said, noting these will make it easier for people in wheelchairs or with other special equipment to access the main seating area which now is totally sloped. Several seats will be removed. He said the balcony seating will be refurbished and a new façade will be added. A new wall and ceiling will help with acoustics in the auditorium, Maire said, as well as new lighting and
a new stage curtain. The auditorium project will be done over the summer of 2017, he said, noting that it isn’t a project that can be done during the school year. Other projects in Borough School will be replacement of all of the windows, some of which date back to the 1950s and earlier. In addition, all classroom lights will be replaced with LEDs for an expected reduction of energy costs of 50 percent, about $75,000 annually. Borough School will also see new hallway flooring and the replacement of part of the roof and of the continued on next page

metal exterior doors that are rusted and leaking in spots. Mountain Way School, the district’s primarygrade building, which is much newer than Borough School will get a heating upgrade and some new windows and lights. Maire has met with the architect from Settembrino Associates of Red Bank and hopes to start ordering replacement items soon. Some of the work can be done during the school year and Maire hopes to start before the end of this term, he said. About 40 percent of the costs will be borne by the state, leaving a $3.72 million impact on the taxpay-
ers for a tax increase of about $130 on a home assessed at $450,000. Maier, who has been with the district for four years, said he brought the campaign for the referendum to the public, meeting with the Republican and Democratic clubs, the sen-
ior citizens group and the Rotary Club among others. Facebook and Twitter were also pressed into service. Maire said. “It was a great opportunity to share what we are doing,” the superintendent said.

WHAT’S WHA T’S NEW IN DENTISTR DENTISTRY Y Recently, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new dental material called Recently, silver diamine fluoride, which has been used for decades in Japan. This new material can arrest large tooth decay after removing the decay with a hand instrument. While it is not a permanent solution to treating cavities, it has a wide vava riety of applications. For instance, it is good for treating cavities in small children. If a three-year-old child has many large cavities in his or her baby teeth but is fearful of the dentist, this new material is a viable option for treatment. The dentist can simply remove the decay with a hand instrument, dry the affected tooth and apply this matemate rial. After this, the dentist can go back and restore the teeth one by one at a later date, when the child is more readily able to handle the procedure. The application diamine fluoride can also help those with delayed dental insurance coverage. Sometimes, a patient has a tooth awaiting treatment. His or her dental insurance will not cover the procedures until months later when it becomes effective. This patient can have the material applied as a temporary solution until insurance can cover the procedures to properly treat the tooth. Due to the simplicity of the applicaapplica

tion of silver diamine fluoride and the economical nature of this type of treatment, the patient can meet a budget. Other applications include geriatric care. Many senior patients have a limited budget, yet have many large root cavities due to various medical conditions. Silver diamine fluoride can economically arrest multiple cavities after one procedure. It provides a valuable and cost-effective alternative. As always, my office stays at the forefront of dental technology and material science. Morristown Field Hockey Dominates Over Competition now is Eastern High School in Voorhees. But, beyond the perennial powerhouse Eastern, there are so many outstanding squads in the Garden State which makes what the Morristown High School field hockey program is achieving thus far this season even more meaningful and noteworthy. Not only are the Colonials winning, but they’re doing so in dominant fashion
against some tough competition. They are building the type of momentum that may very well carry them far in the post-season. Through the first week of October, Morristown had an overall record of 10-1 and they were 3-0 in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference United Division. Morristown Field Hockey... continued from previous page vision. Beyond all of that, consider that Morristown has outscored their opponents through their first 11 regular season games by a combined goal total of 34-3. The Colonials have a solid coaching staff as well as well-respected, veteran leaders on the roster including the team captains-Charlotte Duff, Marlena Falmy and Alyssa Richtarek, all of whom are seniors. Diane DeSalvo, Morristown’s head field hockey coach, mentioned a few of the many strengths that Duff, Falmy and Richtarek possess as captains. “They are leaders,’’ DeSalvo said. “They are positive role models and can keep the team focused and motivated through the ups and downs in the season. [Duff, Falmy and Richtarek help their
teammates through] example and motivation. DeSalvo mentioned that the captains get the job done where it counts the most-in the classroom. She stated that they have high GPA’s and take honors and AP courses. Beyond the captains, DeSalvo stated that the top contributors for the Colonials this year include Devon Colquhoun, Jackie Clemons, Eleanor Meli, Jackie Miller and Callie Sundin. Morristown is looking forward to a strong seed in the upcoming NJSIAA North 1 Group Four Sectional Tournament. First round Sectional Tournament playoff games are set to begin on Oct. 25. Last season, the Colonials advanced to the North One Group Four Sectional semifinal round before losing by one goal to Randolph.

HVAC Inspection Advised To Prepare For Cold Months
he leaves may be falling now, but winter is just around the corner. Don’t wait until cold weather arrives to make sure the heating system can take on the chill. Properly preparing the heating system for winter requires only a few hours of time and guarantees comfort during the colder months. No one wants to have their furnace breakdown in the middle of winter! Regular check-ups and maintenance ensure that the system is performing efficiently and providing optimum home comfort. A maintenance plan also extends the life of equipment, increases cost effectiveness and ensures safe operation. Recommended by manufacturers and utilities alike, regularly scheduled maintenance on a heating and air conditioning system can reduce breakdowns by as much as 95 percent and lower utility bills by up to 35 percent. Air Group offers a wide choice of service plans for heating, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical & generator systems. A service technician is available 24 hours a day seven days a week from October-April for heating through its on-call rotation, which is especially important during extreme weather when someone is entrusted to get equipment going right away.
The easiest and most cost-effective way to keep a system running efficiently is to enroll in an Air Group Priority Plus Maintenance Plan. Tune-ups catch small problems before they become major breakdowns. Get other membership benefits, like priority service to jump to the head of the line and be scheduled ahead of others. This applies to both routine and emergency calls. Also receive a 15 percent discount off the bottom line for heating, air conditioning and plumbing services for as long as the service partner relationship remains in effect. And on top of all that, get a peace of mind. The home’s plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems will be assessed to ensure they are in safe operating condition; findings will be reported, concerns will be explained and potential emergencies will be alerted before they become disruptive problems. Check out this helpful checklist to ensuring the furnace runs smoothly and efficiently throughout the entire snowy season. Replace the furnace filter. Check to see if the filter is full of debris since the last time it was replaced. A dirty filter can cause the furnace to work harder than it has to, and decrease airflow, making it to use more energy and
shortening the lifespan of the furnace. Now is also the time to service the humidifier by changing the water filter. Check vents and ductwork. Be sure the supply and return vents are free and clear while also being sure they are not blocked with furniture or clothes. The air must circulate through the rooms to heat them properly. Air leaking from the basement or attic ductwork is air that should be traveling to rooms. Thoroughly check ducts and their connections to make sure they are secure, and seal air leaks properly before turning on the furnace for the winter. Schedule a maintenance call. Having the furnace thoroughly cleaned and inspected by one of the experienced HVAC professionals at Air Group LLC before the start of the winter can make sure that the unit will run efficiently and will fix any potential problems before they grow into bigger concerns. Need the furnace inspected? If the furnace wasn’t inspected yet, don’t delay. Contact the experts at Air Group, certified HVAC experts with more than 50 years of experience, call at 1-800-545-1020 or schedule an appointment online at airgroupllc.com.

MEF Parent Education Series Focuses On Sports And Life
he Morris Educational Foundation (MEF) plans to host the first part of its annual Parent Education Series on Tues., Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at Morristown High School in Morristown. John O’Sullivan is a former collegiate and professional soccer player who has spent the past two decades as a coach at the youth, high school, and college level. Through his professional and personal experiences, he recognized that the modern day youth sports culture has evolved into an ultra-competitive, adult-centered enterprise that is failing our children. He also discovered that 70 percent of kids drop out of organized sports by the age of 13. O’Sullivan founded the Changing the Game Project in 2012 in order to raise awareness of this issue and work towards giving youth sports back to our kids. With the latest science and research, he provides actionable steps to help kids develop character and a positive mindset while also creating an environment that teaches positive core values and life skills rather than focusing on wins and losses, scholarships and professional aspi-

rations. Following his presentation, O’Sullivan will participate on a Q&A panel with two guest panelists from the community; Smitty Horton the Athletic Director at Morristown High School and Dr. Damion Martins, the Director of Orthopedics & Sports Medicine for Atlantic Health System. For Morris School District parents who are unable to attend the evening program, a special “Meet the Author” session will be held from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. in the Morristown High School Learning Commons. In the afternoon, Horton will host a roundtable discussion between O’Sullivan and members of the Morris School District coaching staff to identify ways to bridge the partnership between home and school in helping students to be happy and healthy while achieving success in sports and in life. “We are pleased to continue our Parent Education Series by bringing another world-renowned expert in the parenting field to the greater Morristown community,” said Kim Pistner, Chairperson of the MEF.
