Church Group Uses Hobby Time To Help Others
By Elsie Walker Everything goes with a prayer,” explained Lynn Zaremba, pastor of the Stanhope United Methodist Church. She was talking about the items being made by the church’s hobby club. Those items include shawls and lap blankets for residents of nursing homes as well as blankets to be given to babies baptized in the church. The hobby club meets the second Saturday of each month from 10:30 a.m. – noon at the church in Netcong. Members of the community are welcomed to join them or to let them know of nursing home residents who would like a
M
shawl or lap blanket. For more information, call the church at 973-347-0247. Church member, Lynn Gremmo of Sparta, explained that the hobby club grew out of congregation members’ desire to socialize outside of the church’s Sunday hospitality time, which follows the service, and also a desire to do something to benefit the community using their talents. Saturday was selected as the meeting day as that was thought to be the day most people were available. During their first two meetings, they talked about what they could do. They thought of the shawls and continued on page 2

Hobby Time To Help Others... continued from front page lap blankets and then called a few nursing homes and they expressed what they would appreciate. Gremmo noted, “Since we have a few members who crochet, they will work on particular projects or we will gladly teach anyone who would like to learn. We welcome knitters or any other craft projects. The number of attendees varies from meeting to meeting, with usually eight to twelve attending; ages ranging from 30s to senior!” Zaremba went on to
describe the group in this way: “Some are interested in learning; some are teachers. Some [come] to reach out [and] help. Wherever your gift falls, that’s where you go.” One of those learning is Zaremba herself. While she can sew and cross stitch, the pastor shared that when she was younger, her grandmother had tried to teach her to crochet to no avail. Now she’s trying again. idents, the group decided to make something that would be a special remembrance for babies baptized at the church: blankets “We have completed one so far and it was a success,” said Gremmo. “We bought reversible fleece and satin binding and had the child’s name, Stanhope UMC and the date of the baptism embroidered on the binding. We have enough material for at least a dozen more blankets so that will also keep us busy.” She noted that the group
just received an endowment that will help supply it with yarn, needles, sewing materials, etc. While Gremmo notes that the hobby club is still in its infancy, there are already other ideas on how its handiworks of love can
church so that when Pastor Lynn makes visitations she can bring them, with love, from the church.” Also, Zaremba shared that everything they make receives a prayer over it before going on to the recipient.

What’s In The Water? Water Testing Available In Mt. Olive
R
educed-cost well water testing for Mt. Olive residents is being offered by the Mt. Olive Township Environmental Commission and the Raritan Headwaters Association. Test kits may be purchased on Sat., May 20, between 9 a.m. and noon at the Mt. Olive municipal building cafeteria. Mt. Olive water from a private wells is not tested by any state or local authority. Residents are responsible for the quality of their well water Both human-caused and naturally occurring contaminants are often found in private wells. Nitrates and bacteria, which can lead to immediate and serious health conditions, may be found in well water as a result of a poorly performing septic system or a nearby agricultural source. Two naturally occurring elements, arsenic and radon, are also com-
monly found in well water in northwestern New Jersey. Scientific studies associate long-term exposure to arsenic and radon with cancer and other health effects. Lead may be present in drinking water if there is lead-based solder in pipes or lead components in well pumps. The lead is leached by corrosive water. Lead can cause physical or mental development problems in infants and children. Mt. Olive residents may have their well water tested for coliform bacteria and nitrates for $60. Test kits for other contaminants, such as lead, arsenic and radon, are available for additional cost. Each test kit comes with easy-to-follow instructions and all required containers. Payment by check is preferred. The water samples must be dropped off at the municipal building on May 22, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. The RHA will ensure that all the samples
reach a state-certified laboratory later that day for testing. Test results are communicated directly to the residents. If pollutants are detected, the RHA will provide information so well owners can address the problems and make their water safe for consumption. Nationally, nearly half of all people get their water from groundwater sources. Approximately 80 percent of people living in the Raritan Headwaters region rely on groundwater. The EPA and NJ DEP both recommend that private wells be tested annually for coliform and nitrates. For more information, contact Mara Tippett of RHA at 908-234-1852, ext. 401 or via email at welltesting@raritanheadwaters. org. Visit the RHA website for demonstrations of proper well water sampling techniques (www.raritanheadwaters.org).

Dental Implants, Insurance and Payment
R
arely do patients come to me in need of dental implants without questions about costs, insurance and payments. This issue of Dental Digest will hopefully shed some light on these issues. Insurance: • Dental insurance does not behave like medical insurance. Dental insurance has a maximum, meaning once your insurance company pays out that amount, they will not pay any more for that benefit period, typically a calendar year. Therefore, if your plan’s maximum is $1,500 and your expected treatment is $5,000, your responsibility will be $3,500. • Implant coverage: We are finding more and more policies cover den-
tal implants, but this is a very broad and general statement. When someone undergoes dental implant treatment, there are multiple services that are performed. Coverage for each service is what you need to know. Examples of these services may include: the implant itself, an abutment, a crown, extractions, and grafting. Also, remember the point made above: once the maximum is reached, the insurance company will not pay out any additional funds. • Pre-determinations: When you ask your dentist to find out what your plan covers, you are asking for a pre-determination. However, these documents serve very little purpose, except to find out if a procedure is covered under your plan. IT
IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF PAYMENT! Just because the document states it is a covered procedure does not mean that it will be paid. There are MANY limitations and exclusions that apply. BEWARE! Investment: • Dental implants should be thought of as an investment, not an expense. You are investing your time and financial resources into your health. Understanding this concept will help you get away from the restrictive nature of insurance and guide you towards other methods of affording dental implants. Payment: In my practice, we perform many dental implant procedures for our patients and the patients of other
dentists. We recognize the financial needs of people, and we offer many opportunities for people to be able to afford the treatments they need and desire: • Cash & Check Discounts: Many people have the funds for the services they are requesting, but like all smart consumers, they look for discounts. We will offer those discounts for payments made my cash & check. • Home Equity Lines Of Credit: If you own your own home, and with interest rates so low, this is the cheapest money you can borrow. You pay yourself back as you see fit, with no (to little) penalties. • Healthcare Financing Companies: There are multiple companies that will
lend money for your healthcare needs. Some examples are CareCredit, Lending Club, and Health Credit Services. Plans offered by these companies range from interest-free loans to extended loans at higher interest rates. In summary, whether your needs are a single implant or complex care such as All-On-Four®, insurance, financing, and your thought process are all important considerations. We help our patients every day with these considerations here at Morris County Dental Associates. About the author: Dr. Ira Goldberg has been performing implant procedures for 22 years, and is recognized as an expert
in the field of dental implants. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology / Implant Dentistry, a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Elementary Students Build Rockets To Test Knowledge

tudents in the gifted and talented program at Sandshore
Elementary School in Budd Lake recently constructed their own rockets to
test what they had learned about the forces of flight and aerospace engineering. The fourthand fifth-graders worked in teams of three and used construction paper, straws, and masking tape to build their rockets. The rockets were propelled by air from squeeze bottles. After testing, students had opportunities to rework and improve their designs. “The students did an amazing job,” said teacher Sandy Andrews. “In every project that we do, I remind them never to fear failure. It’s key to the learning process. Engineering doesn’t often work perfectly the first time so revisions are important. And that requires teamwork, communication, and good analyti-
cal skills.” Before the hands-on portion of the lesson, students learned about the various parts of a rocket as well as the forces of gravity, lift, and drag. They also watched videos on rocketry which touched on concepts such as escape velocity. The gifted and talented program is devoted to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). Students meet for 45 minutes one morning per week before the start of the school day. There are currently 22 students in the school’s program. Past projects have included designing and building a roller coaster, working with optical illusions, and constructing a tower to understand the methods that

While there’s no exact science to wine pairing, these simple tips can help you make your selection. Sweet Cheesecake A good rule: the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. Avoid heavy reds for a sweeter dessert and instead pair with a crisp white like Chardonnay,
such as Joseph Carr from Sonoma, California. Citrusy Lemon Meringue Pie Lemon flavors can sometimes be polarizing, but complementing this dessert with an equally citrusy wine can work wonders. Try pairing with a food-friendly pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc. Rich Chocolate Cake Red wine with chocolate seems like a no-brainer, but not all red wines are created equal. For a richer delicacy like this devil’s food cake, try something like Villa Pozzi Nero

Another advantage to these types of meals is they can easily be expanded to serve extended family. Also, when prepared using a slow cooker, these meals can be easily transported to a friends’ potluck or relative’s home. Beloved for their turnit-on-and-forget-it convenience, slow cookers allow cooks to start meals in the morning and then return home at night and have dinner ready and waiting. .J. Morton, a seventh grader at Netcong Elementary School, won the 2017 USA Wrestling New Jersey Scholastic State Tournament, held at the Sun Bank National Center Arena in Trenton on Sat., March 11. This prestigious competition is a culmination of eight regional qualifying competitions with the top three wrestlers from each qualifier advancing to the State Tournament. T.J. is a local legend and role model in the Netcong and surrounding community. He started wrestling four years ago; before that he played football and baseball. “He gave up football and baseball to concentrate on wrestling,” says Todd Morton, his father. “T.J. knew that to compete on a national level he would have to give up football and baseball,” says Morton. T.J.’s parents noticed their son’s interest in the sport a few years back when he would wrestle on the playground with his peers. “We said you couldn’t do that” on the playground, “so we took him where he could.”
Netcong Wrestler Wins NJ Youth State Championship to a fracture of his growth plate in his shoulder. Lastly, T.J. is also a member at the Underground Strength Training where he receives strength and conditioning training two to three times a week before going to wrestling practice.
This past year, T.J. overcame some major injuries, and so this championship title is certainly a huge accomplishment. In January, he fractured his growth plate in his shoulder during a match, was out of wrestling for six weeks, attended physical therapy four days a week for three weeks to get cleared to come back to wrestling, and was able to train for one week before the state tournament.
The training and time commitment to achieve this level of success starts with training. T.J. trains at Scorpions Wrestling School in Fairfield. He’s trained there since 2010. Also, he is a member of the Scorpion National Team, which competes at National Duals up and down the east coast. Additionally, T.J. wrestles on the Lenape Valley Junior Patriot Team, but his season was cut short due
Some of T.J.’s winning awards are as follows: 2014 NJ State Champion, 2015 and 2016 NJ State Runner Up, 2014 Mid Atlantic Champion, and 2015 Mid Atlantic Runner Up. Not only is T.J. a talented athlete but he is a great
student. He has earned honor roll this year, was selected for gifted and talented, and loves spending time helping the younger wrestlers both in the Lenape and scorpions program.

NCJW Hosts Author Of A Holocaust Survivor’s Story Of Survival
be Peck is the only living Holocaust survivor of an entire town in Poland. He is the only person left in this world who can provide a firsthand account of the atrocities committed by the Nazis against his family, friends and contemporaries. Maya Ross, the author of “Abe-vs-Adolf: The True Story of Holocaust Survivor Abe Peck,” will recount his astonishing story of survival at the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), West Morris Section’s Personal Giving Thank-You Brunch on Sun., April 30, beginning at 10 a.m., at a private home in Denville. The event is open to everyone who makes a do-
nation to the NCJW, West Morris Section’s Personal Giving campaign. Donations may be made by contacting Dorothy Cohen at dorothy_irvingcohen@ msn.com. Personal Giving is coordinated by Dorothy Cohen of Denville and Anne Gorman of Rockaway. Before Nazi Germany targeted European Jews for persecution and then ultimately annihilation in its insidious plan called the Final Solution of the Jewish Question, Peck had a wonderful childhood. But in March 1940, at only 15 years old, Peck was snatched from his home and family and forced to spend the next five unimaginably horrific years
as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Robbed of his teenage years, with no parents to guide or care for him, Abe somehow survived starvation, disease, beatings, shootings, forced labor, death marches and prolonged imprisonment. If asked how he did it, how he defied death by beating the most abysmal of odds, he will simply say that he was lucky. But was it luck, or was it an indomitable will to live? By detailing his firsthand experience of the horrors of discrimination and genocide, through Ross’s book, he fervently hopes that subsequent generations will learn from the past and vow, “Never again.” Ross is a fiction writer

who met Holocaust survivor Peck while serving on the board of a not-for-profit philanthropic organization. She was so fascinated by his tale of courage and survival that she set out to write his true life story. Her talk at the NCJW, West Morris Section’s Personal Giving Thank-you Brunch promises to be eminently memorable. Wizards Game Dunks In Thousands Toward Boys’ Basketball Expenses And CMS Fifth Grade Picnic
By Cheryl Conway lose to 800 people packed the Mt. Olive High School on March 21 to watch the Harlem Wizards play against the Mt. Olive Boys’ Varsity Basketball team, 12 teachers and two DARE officers. The event was a collaborative effort by the MOHS boys’ basketball team and Chester M. Stephens Elementary School, according to Jill Mullen, board member of the MO Boy’s Booster Club. The proceeds will go to the basketball team for
training and equipment, as well as CMS to offset costs for the fifth grade year-end picnic and graduation party. Close to $5,000 was raised from this year’s event. “The attendance for this event was spectacular with about 650 tickets sold prior and about 150 tickets sold at the door,” says Mullen. More of an entertainment to those watching, the game does have a competitive edge. “The Wizards won the game that is why they are the Wizards,” says Mullen.
“They let the MO team get back into the game by giving us 10 points per our made shots. So it was never really close.” CMS SCA President Jackie Richardson went through hoops to make the event happen and her efforts are greatly appreciated by other organizers and the community. “I want to thank all of the people involved with the event,” says Mullen. “Obviously the people who attended, the teachers, players, school personnel, MO township employees, the list goes on and on. A
special thank you to the MOHS Athletic Director Dave Falleni and Ms. Best. The AD supported this event from start to finish and without their help it would not have been such a huge success.” Mullen, who worked closely with Richardson, adds “She [Jackie] did a wonderful job heading it up.” From the proceeds raised, “We will also be giving MO Middle School and Tinc Road School a small donation, for allowing us to advertise the event at their school.”

Get Your Color On At MOMAC Do Or Dye 5k Fun/ Run
he MOMAC Do or Dye 5K Fun Run/ Walk is about coming out to enjoy a day with your friends and family and getting blasted with color at Turkey Brook Park! This great morning of fun and color is also about promoting a healthy lifestyle and raising money for a good cause. Similar to 2015, this year’s event will benefit the American Cancer Society with participants raising funds through individual pledge sheets. The 2015 event successfully raised $3,000 for the American Cancer Society. “This is not your typical 5K,” Jill Daggon, Recreation supervisor, said. “Nor is it just another fundraising event.” The MOMAC Do or Dye 5k Fun Run/Walk is for participants of all levels,
even those who hate running! There is no age limit, whether young or old, in fact we encourage parents with strollers, but Mount Olive Recreation does offer safety recommendations on their website for young children. “The main objective is to get active, have fun getting colorful, and raise monies for the American Cancer Society,” stated Daggon. Runners will be asked to register online(deadline April 18) or onsite (registration opens at 8:30am), then use a pledge sheet to collect donations for the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving

MEF ONSTAGE Big Hit This Year
he Morris Educational Foundation is thrilled to announce that the 10th anniversary celebration of Morristown ONSTAGE raised more than $125,000 for the Morris School District! The annual talent show, held at the Mayo Performing Arts Center on March 1, spotlighted the best amateur talent from Morristown, Morris Plains and Morris Township. “We are incredibly grateful to our entire community for its overwhelming support of this annual event which sold out in less than three days,” said Molly Servais, Morristown ONSTAGE chair and Morris Educational Foundation trustee. “We are thrilled to have
raised the most ever in our talent show’s 10 year history and to highlight the incredible talent in our area. The Morris Educational Foundation is an integral part of the Morris School District and this fund raising event furthers the Foundation’s ability to distribute financial and other resources to the Morris School District.” The goal this year was to raise $100,000 for the
10 schools in the Morris School District to celebrate the 10th year of this “must-see” community event. Thank you so much to our sponsors, playbill advertisers and ticket buyers who supported Morristown ONSTAGE and the Morris School District in an unprecedented way and surpassed the goal by $25,000!! “The generosity of the community is really overwhelming. They donate really pristine, beautiful, designer clothing. But we’d like so see more customers take advantage of the great selection.’’ The store stocks a huge

2015, the store hasn’t seen a huge shopper turnout, despite the impressive selection. Barron said a handful of repeat customers sing the shop’s praises and many have worn RACKS items
to the office, graduations, holiday events and even to weddings and formals. Overall, though, shopper turnout has been lower than expected, so the group is trying to spread the word, and is offering the $5 deal,
which applies to every item in the store. “We just want more people to stop in and see for themselves all the great items we have here,’’ Barron said. “If our hours aren’t convenient, we’ll
schedule a time for a private shopping session.’’ Despite the slow shopper turnout, RACKS has been a boon to the community. The club has donated 75 coats to the Morris County Foster Parent Association. Additionally, 40 suits were donated to Dress For Success Morris County, a charity that strives to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing them with support and professional attire. The club has also been a valuable resource to area families who were displaced by fire or floods in recent months. Families were invited to shop for free in the boutique. The shop stocks only the finest quality clothing
donated. Clothing that isn’t deemed RACKS-worthy is donated to the nonprofit Big Brothers Big Sisters. The Junior Women’s Club is 60 members strong and has historically supported the community through its contributions to the police department, the town’s first aide squads, the library and its volunteer fire department. Battered women’s shelters, local food pantries, cancer research organizations, recreational programs and elementary school programs have also benefitted from the club’s past fund-raising efforts. The store is open Tues., Wed., Fri. and Sat. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Thurs. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Check the Junior Women’s Club’s
Facebook page at www. facebook.com/racksthritboutique to confirm hours. For more information, or to schedule a private shopping session for a group, email Barron at bmkpc2@yahoo. com. Recently, the club set up a large, white donation bin in the parking lot behind the store. Anyone wishing to donate clothing or accessories may now do so at any time of day or night. Donors get a tax deduction for making a charitable contribution and receipts will be given if needed, Barron said. More information about the club and the store is available on the club’s website, www.lvjuniors.org.

April Begins Garage Story Sunday Talks At Thomas Edison’s Glenmont Estate
S
by Michele Guttenberger pecial ranger-led talks of Thomas Edison’s Glenmont garage begin every Sunday, every two weeks, through June 25. If wondering if Thomas Edison saw the future in electric cars, questions will be quickly answered with a visit to this famous West Orange inventor’s personal garage. Many Tesla car aficionados make the pilgrimage to the first electric charging station garage. Al’s Garage, his childhood nickname, is the steampunk time capsule of the electric car’s future for American suburban living. It is story telling of interesting developments conceived in this garage that journeys from car bat-
teries to Edison’s poured concrete dream homes. Like many successful businessmen, Edison’s own domestic domain was his garage. He built it in 1908. It was a fixture that he designed and he oversaw the construction himself. Edison’s garage was his own unique creation, because it was the prototype for his new cement construction venture. This home project helped him master the technique of constructing mass-produced, poured-cement houses using iron molds. His garage and the original Yankee stadium came from the same cement poured by his own Edison Portland Cement. Today’s news is about battery operated cars and
providing a charging station for them. Edison already had this technology over some 100 years ago, in his own garage. He owned electric cars that used Edison batteries. Edison invented the alkaline storage battery in 1901 and spent years perfecting it for use in automobiles. The garage was the place to service these cars. Edison also had a gasoline filling pump in his garage for his 1922 Model T Ford – a gift from his good friend Henry Ford. The most interesting feature of Edison’s garage is the turntable to help park these vehicles. A car could rest on the concrete turntable and a hand crank rotated it to a desired parking
position. The driver never had to struggle backing the car into a spot, the turntable did the navigating. Few residential garages today can boast having this feature. Spend a Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.,
or 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. learning about Thomas Edison’s poured concrete garage. There is no additional cost to visit the garage apart from the regular NPS entrance fee. To view the awesome collection of Edison’s electric and gas powered
cars a Car Pass is required. They are obtained at the Edison Factory Lab visiting center in West Orange. Visit website for more calendar info at http://www. nps.gov/edis/index.htm or call 973-736-0550 x11 for visiting information.
