Mayor Keith Kazmark recently swore in three Woodland Park Police Officers - Dylan Mulroony and Massimo Iacovo, along with Special II Police Officer David Garcia.

Dylan Mulroony was born and raised in Woodland Park, attended all Woodland Park public schools and Passaic Valley High School. After high school, Dylan attended Bergen Community College where he earned an associate’s degree in political science. Throughout the years, Dylan has had several different job experiences including WP DPW summer help, Essex Fells DPW, Suez Water Company, and, most recently, a lineman for PSE&G. Growing up, Dylan had hoped to one day become a police officer, following in the steps of his family members.

David Garcia, 19, has lived in Woodland Park his entire life. He attended all three grammar schools in Woodland Park and then went to high school at the Passaic County Technical & Vocational Schools. While growing up and being involved in the town, seeing the Woodland Park Police Officers have always inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement. In his junior year, during the Coronavirus pandemic, David looked for ways to serve the community and found no better way than joining the West Paterson Volunteer Fire Department. After graduating high school, he began working for the Woodland Park DPW, where he is currently employed, and he is also serving the Borough as a firefighter.

Massimo Iacovo graduated from Hawthorne High School in 2017 and is now living in Woodland Park. Massimo comes from a family of police officers and firefighters. After high school, he

attended electrical trade school working full-time as an electrician. While he loved working as an electrician and helping people, he wanted to make public service his career. After earning certifications in CPR, basic telecommunications, and emergency medical dispatch, Massimo worked for two years with the Wayne Police Department as an emergency dispatcher.

UNDERSTANDING AND SEEKING TREATMENT FOR BPPV

is essential in determining the type of treatment necessary.

BPPV can be treated with Physical Therapy, Chiropractic care, or by Acupuncture. The experienced therapists at Elite Spine & Sports Care of Totowa offer testing to determine the cause of BPPV and then provide therapy options for treatment.

At Elite Spine & Sports Care of Totowa, we welcome the opportunity to educate Passaic County patients about BPPV and discuss how it can be treated. We offer a way of understanding and seeking treatment for BPPV in NJ.

Treatment could be Physical Therapy, Chiropractic Care or Acupuncture. BPPV is rarely serious, but it can become so when it leads to falling.

Manipulation techniques may be used if treatment is sought through Chiropractic Care. Our Chiropractors at Elite Spine are experienced in these techniques and have found them to be helpful in addressing BPPV.

BPPV stands for Benign

Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo and is a condition that causes you to have a feeling of spinning or dizziness. Often this dizziness is the result of an inner ear problem or from changing the position of your head. Knowing the cause of this uncomfortable sensation

How We Treat Benign

Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

BPPV can be caused by head and neck problems as well as by inner ear issues. The Dix-Hallpike test is used to determine whether the issue is coming from the ear canal. This test can help determine the form treatment should take.

Exercise and Alignment are offered to relieve the discomfort caused by BPPV. The dizziness may affect you when lying down, sitting up, or when standing. The treatment offered by our Physical Therapy staff can bring enormous relief to anyone suffering from BPPV. Another form of treatment for BPPV is Acupuncture. An experienced professional Acupuncturist can stimulate the area surrounding the ear, providing relief through realignment. The Acupuncturists

at Elite Spine are certified and experienced.

Robotic Friend Joins...

Buddy is The Fine Grind’s latest addition to the team. It is a robot programmed to deliver drinks and food to the customers. Buddy comes to The Fine Grind at a time when more and more restaurants throughout the nation are experimenting with automated equipment and robots to see if they are a long-term fit for their businesses.

At The Fine Grind, Buddy is all smiles. The robot’s favorite part of the job is helping the baristas.

“The benefits to the staff of having Buddy are remarkable. Buddy has taken away some of their workload, which has allowed them to continuously get their orders done without having to run on the floor to deliver food and drinks,” said Rhonda Mallek, owner of The Fine Grind.

Buddy’s battery charges at the end of each day so he is ready for the morning shift. Buddy’s main function is to deliver drinks and food to the tables, but the robot also has the capability to return dirty plates and cups once customers are finished.

Buddy is programmed through a computer mapping system from a laptop

that it came with. It was programmed to know the location of all the tables by their numbers and seats, (left and right) so it knows where to deliver the orders.

The staff assign it missions, Mallek said, which means that they tell it where to deliver the food and drinks through a back-end computer portal.

“I have an order for you,” Buddy says upon arriving at a table. Customers would then take their items off the tray that sits on top. There is even a “done” button on its computerized face that allows the customers to let it know that they’ve received their orders. Once the delivery is completed, Buddy retreats back to the kitchen.

“The kids love him,” Mallek said. “I’m hoping more people will come here to see him at work because it’s so unusual to see a robot like Buddy at a small business like ours.”

Other than the short phrases Buddy says when delivering the food and drinks, it doesn’t really communicate with the guests, nor does it receive tips.

Buddy was obtained through United Robotics Group, a company whose

Improve Your Fitness With These 5 Benefits of Walking!

If you think you don’t know how to exercise, you are wrong. Plain and simple, you get out of a workout as much as you put into it.

If you are willing to give physical fitness a try, then there is absolutely nothing holding you back from getting started.

Don’t believe it? Well hear this: You’ve been building your fitness skills since your very first step. That’s right. Walking is one of the most beneficial workouts that you can engage in, and the best part about it is that just about anyone can do it.

THE TOP 5 BENEFITS OF WALKING

1.As a low-intensity activity, walking doesn’t put a lot of pressure on your joints. This means that walking is less likely to lead to injury, especially when compared to high impact activities like running. This makes walking an ideal cardiovascular activity choice for those who are recovering from an injury, or who are dealing with ongoing joint pain or arthritis.

2.As a cardiovascular activity, walking can provide you with the same benefits as running, swimming, or aerobic classes. As long as you are pushing your body to get up to speed so that you feel your heart working and the sweat building, then you are capable of getting in a strong cardiovascular workout while walking. Cardiovascular activity promotes a healthy heart, helps reduce your likelihood of developing type-2 diabetes, and even supports optimal mental health.

3.Walking has proven successful in meeting weight-loss goals for several patients. As a form of cardiovascular exercise that encourages burned calories, walking is a great form of exercise to help you tone muscle and lose weight. But more than that, walking is shown to be a great defense against cravings. If you make a habit of going for a walk instead of giving into your sweet tooth, then walking can actually help you cut down on calorie consumption, too.

4.Walking is known to boost immune function, meaning that walking every day can actually improve your body’s ability to fight off regular illnesses like the flu. Walking for just 20 minutes every day will actually make you more

likely to resist the common cold, and even make it less likely that you’ll need to use a sick day.

5.Walking can be done anywhere, anytime. There are no limitations to how long you can walk, there is no cost associated with walking, and there is no shortage of new locations to help keep you interested in your activity. This is a great workout choice for someone who doesn’t want to pay for a gym membership, or who wants to be able to fit a quick workout in on their own schedule, without having to worry about gym hours or a commute to a workout facility.

WHY IS WALKING SO IMPORTANT?

According to America Walks, “Many doctors and other health professionals cite moderate physical activity, including walking, as a “magic pill” for excellent health. It can maintain the body’s systems in good condition and reduce the risk of chronic illness.

Good health is not the only benefit of walking. In fact, there is a broad range of individual and community benefits that accrue when people walk more often and when communities are designed to make walking safe, enjoyable, and convenient.”

If you are looking to boost your health and get more exercise, walking is a great way to do so.

HOW CAN I GET STARTED?

Fitness walking is just like walking anywhere else.

Just like walking around your house or office, all you need to do is put one foot in front of the other and come up with a plan.

All you need to get started with fitness walking is:

∙ A bit of motivation to get going

∙ A place to walk

∙ A pair of sneakers

The biggest difference between regularly walking and walking for physical fitness is the speed and intention with which you walk.

Rather than focusing on point A or point B, when you go for a fitness walk the focus is on the journey—the distance travelled.

Put a little bit more oomph behind each step to really push yourself for the best outcome.

CONTACT US FOR MORE ASSISTANCE!

While walking is a great workout for those just getting started with physical fitness, this is not a workout that is reserved for the newbies.

Speed walking is actually an Olympic sport, and there are plenty of healthy

and active people who prefer walking over any other form of workout they encounter.

If you are experiencing joint pain that is preventing you from getting active, or need help learning how to get more fitness-minded with your walking routine, then give us a call.

One of our experts can help you get on the walking path to fitness greatness!

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. - Play ball!

The Township held its opening day ceremony for its youth baseball and softball programs at the Little Falls Sports and Recreation Complex turf field on April 22..

A parade took place prior to the ceremony, led by Passaic Valley High School’s marching band, Mayor James Damiano and the Little Falls Council, including all of the baseball and softball teams from Pre-K through eighth grade. Starting at School No. 1, participants marched down Stevens Avenue towards Main Street, followed by a left onto Paterson Avenue before entering the field.

An energetic vibe was shared by everyone in attendance as Damiano threw out the first pitch for softball. Mysti Mugleston, of the Little Falls Athletic Club (LFAC), threw out the first pitch for baseball. Damiano thanked those who helped make the

day possible, which included members of the LFAC, the Little Falls Department of Public Works (LFDPW), the Little Falls Police Department, and Little Falls EMS for “making sure everything runs smoothly and keeping everyone safe.”

“I also want to thank John

Pace and and Tyler Passero of the Recreation Department for their hard work, and all the parents who volunteer all of their time in making these events possible,” he added. “Let’s have a loud cheer for our 2023 baseball and softball seasons!”

Mugleston thanked Damiano

and the Township Council, including the LFDPW, for all their support and especially for the installation of the turf field.

“This turf field is the pride of our town,” she said. “It’s amazing we have such support from our Mayor, Township Council and the DPW to be able to do what we do, so thank you very much.”

Additionally, she thanked all the volunteers. including the coaches and “of course all of the sponsors of the teams.”

She also emphasized that more volunteers are welcomed to join the LFAC in order to help put forth all the sports programs in town each year. She highlighted the LFAC’s scholarship that is donated to a graduating senior from Passaic Valley High School each year through donations.

“So please find out how you can volunteer, because it takes a big team to pull off all these sports programs,” Mugleston added.

First of all, booking an appointment was so easy! I submitted a request online and got a phone call not even 10 minutes later from Ebony to confirm an appointment. Dr. Joshi, the ladies at the front desk, the x-ray technician and all of the staff I encountered were very busy yet remained friendly. They are also very professional and clean. LITTLE FALLS, N.J. - It was a bright and sunny morning for the very first annual Bike Rodeo event in Little Falls on May 6, which brought out approximately 80 preregistered cyclists of all ages enjoying some outdoor recreation, while being provided with safety checks for their bikes and helmets.

The event was spearheaded by Councilwoman Christine Hablitz. It was a collaborative effort between the Little Falls Recreation Department, the Little Falls Township Council and the Little Falls Police Department (LFPD).

The bike route first started on the obstacle course set up at School 1’s playground area. Cyclists then continued through an obstacle course along Walnut Street, Lincoln Avenue, Stanley Street and finished on Ridge Street. The course also included an opportunity for cyclists to see how fast they could go as the LFPD had a radar check on Lincoln Avenue.

Upon completion of the entire course, cyclists then received a certificate from Cpl. Jon Vanak of the LFPD.

Hablitz said the goal of the Bike Rodeo is to promote bicycle safety along with the LFPD, while providing a vehicle-free route for cyclists to bike through and enjoy.

“We’re very excited to bring our first

Bike Ride

annual Bike Rodeo to town and I am happy to see the event come to fruition after a year of planning with our recreation department,” she explained. “As always, we have a wonderful community of small business owners and residents that never fail to come together to show their support for the event. With approximately 80 riders today, we look forward to making this a yearly event.”

Tyler Passero, Little Falls Recreation Director, said the Bike Rodeo is a great first event because it really gets the community involved.

“We have our first Bike Rodeo here today and we’re very excited,” he said. “There are a lot of participants here for the very time that we’re running it. We came early to set up and everyone is riding now.”

Passero also said the event provided an opportunity for the LFPD to get involved by interacting with the community and by running radar on the cyclists to make sure everyone was safe.

“We have the Loose Wheel doing bike checks and Avenues in Motion conducting helmet safety check and giving out free helmets,” he added. “The Friends of the Library sponsored a raffle for a free bike giveaway.”

owner of The Loose Wheel, a full service bicycle company in Cedar Grove, was on-hand doing courtesy bicycle inspection and checks for participants.

“I think it’s a great event and there are lots of families coming out, which is awesome,” he said. “We’ve been providing free bicycle checks to make sure they’re safe, have air in the tires, no loose parts, and that the brakes work, so that kids can ride them safely on the course.”

Emily Gates, Active Transportation Manager for Avenues in Motion, which offers programs and services that improve mobility to residents, was busy checking every helmet at the event.

“We’re happy to be here providing helmet safety checks and giving out free helmets to anyone who needs a new one today,” she said.

Local resident Nancy Stiles brought her 7-year-old granddaughter Vivian to the event. She said that getting kids outdoors for a fun activity is important, especially with an opportunity to make sure their bikes are safe and helmets fit properly.

“I think that it gets the kids out and away from their machines, and their

bikes get inspected to make sure things are safe,” she explained. “We just learned my granddaughter’s helmet wasn’t safe so she has new, safe helmet now.”

Local resident Steve Guerra, echoed the sentiment, adding that it also provides families a chance to bond with one another. He took part in the bike course with his 9-year-old son Vicente.

“It’s terrific they did this event because it’s a great bonding experience that parents can do with their kids,” he said. “I just love how Little Falls always plans events like this

Runner with foot pain?

Matthew F. Wachtler, DPM, FACFAS, is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and reminds his patients that symptoms begin gradually and, if left untreated, progressively worsen. Female professionals who wear high heels every day at work and also are active runners may cause a very stressful combination for their feet.

Dr. Wachtler explains that neuromas enlarge as the condition progresses, causing pain and numbness to a consistent area at the base of the toes. Patients often complain it feels as if something is stuck inside the ball of the foot or as if they are walking on something.

Thickening and swelling of the nerve usually is caused by compression and irritation from wearing very narrow shoes or high heels that crunch the toes in the front of the shoe. In addition, neuromas can result from running, racquet sports and other physical activities that exert repetitive stress on the forefoot.

Runners face a host of aches and pains which they are notorious for pushing through. Some foot pain can be exacerbated by narrow sneakers, pointed-toed shoes at work and the repetitive pounding from running on hard surfaces. These factors can cause a neuroma, a painful nerve disorder of the feet. A nerve located between the toes becomes enlarged and inflamed and produces tingling, burning pain.

The symptoms may go away temporarily by massaging the foot, wearing wider shoes with low heels, and avoiding running and other activities that aggravate the condition. Symptoms become more intense as the nerve enlarges and the temporary damage becomes permanent, so it’s best to seek treatment if discomfort persists for more than a few days.

Neuromas can develop in different areas of the foot. The most common occurrence is called Morton’s neuroma, which develops at the base of the third and fourth toes.

A neuroma isn’t detectable by x-ray, so the diagnosis is based on symptoms and a physical examination to palpate the nerve or a maneuver that elicits an audible click.

Treatment options for Morton’s neuroma depend on how far the condition has progressed. At early stages, padding lessens pressure on the nerve, icing reduces swelling, over-the-counter antiinflammatory medications decrease pain and inflammation, and prescription or custom orthotic devices provide support to reduce compression. Patients also are advised to wear wider shoes with low heels and take a

break from running or other activities until the condition improves.

In severe cases, injections or surgery might be the best option to provide relief. He provides comprehensive foot

SPRING INTO WARM WEATHER SPORTS

For weekend warriors and young athletes, spring sports are about to start up. To ensure an injury-free season and a high performance on the field, track, or court, it’s necessary to do some advanced preparation.

From Couch to Condioning

If you have been less active during the winter months, it’s essential that you begin increasing your physical activity level. Expecting to jump back into your spring sport at the same level you were at the end of last season is inviting pain and injury. Start with walking and basic conditioning exercises. If you or your child are participating in a team sport, ask the coach for workout suggestions. Take a few weeks to gradually build up the intensity and duration of your activity.

Gear Check

A safe season starts with inspecting all equipment and protective gear for your sport or activity and ensuring everything is in good condition and free of damage or excessive wear. Of course, for any exercise or sport, your shoes are a key piece of gear. Buy shoes specifically made for the activity

you are doing. Young athletes should get their feet measured, so the correct size sports shoes are purchased each season. Don’t use hand-me-downs or secondhand sports shoes-they conform to the foot of the original owner and may cause pain or

injury to a new user.

Ask the Podiatrist

The start of a new sports season is also an excellent time to schedule a checkup with your podiatrist, especially if you have

had a foot injury in the past or are currently dealing with a chronic disorder such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis. The foot doctor will examine your feet and assess any current conditions. Your podiatrist can make recommendations regarding sports footwear and modifications you may want to consider for your exercise routine that will decrease the risk of injury, protect vulnerable areas of your feet and improve your game.

Stay on top of your foot health game. Call or request an appointment online if you have any concerns about your own or your child’s foot health.

Taking care of your feet and managing your pain is crucial. At Advanced Foot Care of NJ, LLC, Dr. Anant Joshi and his staff treat a range of conditions and are committed to providing results.

Please let us know how we can serve you best.
