Community Gardens Open Their Gates To The Public

W

By Catherine Bialkowski and Jessica Jones hat better way to spend a weekend than at a local garden, tasting freshly-picked fruits and vegetables and bonding over the sense of community? The Morris County Park Commission and the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum planned to host a free Open Gates Weekend on July 15 and 16 to demonstrate the beauty of the county’s greenery and let guests of all ages engage with nature and with each other. This is Open Gates Weekend’s second year. Participating this year are the Morris County Park Commission Community Garden, Interfaith Food Pantry Garden, Early Street Community Garden, Morris Township Ted Largman Community Garden at ValleVue Preserve, Madison Community Garden, Wash-

ington Township Community Garden, the community garden at South Branch Preserve, Roxbury Community Garden, Pequannock Township Community Garden and Florham Park Community Garden. According to Cynthia Triolo, manager at the commission’s own community garden, last year’s event saw great success, with more than 200 people in attendance, despite the “terrible weather.” “It was unanimous among the participating gardens that we should make it an annual event,” she said. “Visitors were amazed at what was growing in the gardens and also by how beautiful they were.” The showcase would not be complete without an array of free samples taken directly from the gardens themselves. “One of the gardens did a potluck, one did a salsa tasting, one did a tomato

tasting,” Triolo said, referring to last year’s Open Gates. “Others gave away seedlings of chard and kale; others gave seeds; one had music. Every garden offered something different.”

This year, visitors expected similar giveaways. The commission’s decision to host this event was based on a passion for not only gardening, but on fostering a sense of communi-

ty and a healthy lifestyle. “Community gardens are important for many reasons,” Triolo said, listing the benefits. “They bring a sense of community to their location. They promote healthy food. They lower our carbon footprint. They also foster bonds of friendship and support. Children learn where their food comes from and what it takes to grow your own. They also create a green space that filters rainwater and restores oxygen to the air.” Barbara McCloskey, the garden manager at the

South Branch Preserve Community Garden, gave an example of the sense of community at her garden, saying that the picnic tables seem to be the most popular part because they allow the gardeners to get some shade and talk to one another. Community gardens allow freedom to experiment when growing different vegetables. They give gardeners access to seeing firsthand where their food is grown and to know that it comes from a safe, familiar place. “There is nothing like the

taste of totally fresh, organically grown vegetables,” said McCloskey. “Since you pick out your seeds or plants, you also have the opportunity to grow different varieties of vegetables that are not usually found in the supermarkets.” Additionally, each of the community gardens donates a portion of what’s grown there to a local food pantry. “Many have garden plots that are dedicated to giving, and wonderful volunteers who tend the plots and deliver the produce,” said Triolo. “In the past two years, the Morris County Park Commission’s community garden donated over 4,000 pounds of produce.” The South Branch Preserve Community Garden

was able to donate 740 pounds of produce last year. Every week during the summer they set up coolers where gardeners are able to donate their excess vegetables, herbs and even fresh flowers. Community gardens are perfect for those who have a green thumb but have nowhere to use it. “The residents are thrilled to have a place to plant, as many either live in apartments, have too much shade or there are too many animals in their yards to be able to properly grow vegetables,” said McCloskey. Sal Internicola, who has a plot at South Branch Preserve, calls gardening “a lot of work, but fun.” His own garden at home,

he said, doesn’t get enough sunlight. A community garden nearby- filled with tomatoes, beets, peas, lettuce, and various herbs - was the perfect solution. “It’s relaxing, and I’ve learned a lot from the other gardeners.” The same goes for Dick Spaedt, another gardener at South Branch. “I heard about it in the newspaper a few years ago,” Spaedt said. “I’ve been here since day one.” Day one, for the South Branch Preserve, took place in 2013. The community garden is in its fifth year of business - and has nearly doubled in size since the beginning. “We have potluck dinners and a seed exchange; a few times, master gardeners

came from Rutgers to talk to us,” Spaedt said, offering a look into the activities that come with being a community gardener. There are countless opportunities for those who want to get involved. And these events do not only take place at

South Branch - each of the gardens has offerings of its own, to enhance skills and encourage social interaction. Whether someone is a master gardener looking for a place to hone their craft or a novice looking for a place

to grow their own produce, a community garden could become a new home. With a prominent sense of community and growth (literally and figuratively), a community garden can foster creativity, awareness and a love for the earth.

Stay Afloat This Summer At Horseshoe Lake With New Paddling Boat Rentals

N

By Lisa McNamara ow paddling can be added to the list of things to do at Horseshoe Lake in Roxbury. As of July 6, kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards are available to rent to the public on an hourly basis. The ball was is in motion for some time and things finally came together, according to Mike Levine, vice-president of Ramsey Outdoor of Succasunna, who is handling the rentals. Levine said there will be about 12 kayaks, three to four canoes and up to eight stand-up paddle boards on hand to rent for $20 the first hour and $10 each additional hour. Rentals are available on a first-come, first-serve

basis, Tuesday-Sunday. Offering paddle sports “goes back a couple of years,” according to Levine. “We do something similar in Bergen County, and it’s been a huge success. We wanted to do something similar at this store.” Those in Succasunna were inquiring about where they could go to kayak or canoe. Levine said there are not a ton of places to go to kayaking or paddling that don’t require putting equipment on their car and driving some distance to a lake. “We’re very excited about this,” said Keith Knudsen, Roxbury Township’s Recreation Director. “The Roxbury Town Council and the Recreation Advisory Committee got behind the project and sup-

ported it.” Knudsen added signs will be posted with rules and general information, and tents will be set up with picnic tables in the rental area. Residents and visitors are excited too. Aileen Musynske of Roxbury said, “It would be awesome and a good use of space. Lake Hopatcong has kayaks, and we rent them all the time.” “Paddle boats make for a great date night,” added Erica Thacker of Lake Hopatcong. “I think that’s a great idea; it would give kids and adults even more to do,” said Thomas Nassif, a Flanders resident. “It would draw more folks to the park.” According to Levine,

anyone under 18 is required to have a parent or guardian sign a waiver, and basic instruction will be provided if needed. Russell McKee, a Ramsey Outdoor employee, said, “We show people how to sit and stand up on the paddle boats.” “We will always have an on-water presence for safety and information purposes,” explained Tim Burns, Ramsey Outdoor Store manager. He also noted that they started with a soft opening on July 6 “to get our feet wet first before we went fully live.” Emails will be sent to the general population regarding paddling rentals, and Knudsen said they will be advertising and circulating flyers soon as well. Levine added there is also

an arrangement with the town for a “free day” to enable the public to get out on the water and try it out. For more information,

visit https://ramseyoutdoor. com/. Better yet, go to the park, rent a boat and start paddling!

Community Support Raises Hope From Ashes Of Tragic Fire

By Anya Bochman dam Reingold, 15, of Succasunna, is a freshman at Roxbury High School who always tries to “do as much as [he] can to help people.” That is why when he heard that an electrical short caused a fire that resulted in his classmate’s home being deemed uninhabitable, Reingold decided to act. The fire, which consumed the home of the Maresca family, did not result in any injuries as Nick and Vikki Maresca and their children - Brandon, Madison, Payton and Cameron - were not home at the time. It did, however, cause substantial damage despite the best efforts of firefighters from Roxbury, Netcong, Picatinny Arsenal

and the Mount Arlington Fire/Rescue team. Along with extensive damage to the home came a myriad of expenses; in the midst of tragedy, however, hope has come in the form of community support. Multiple fundraisers have been organized to raise money on behalf of the Maresca family. Reingold - who is a classmate of 15-year-old Madison Maresca - has thrown a benefit concert for the cause. He first found out about the fire after receiving a call from Madison; having known his classmate and her family since the beginning of the school year, he did his best to help. Calling upon his friends and the Roxbury High

School Key Club, of which he is a member, Reingold put in motion the organization of the Maresca Family Benefit Concert, an outdoor event to raise funds for the family. Held 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on June 23 at the Roxbury Pavilion and Band Shell located at Horseshoe Lake, the concert featured student musicians performing covers of pop songs. Admission was $10, and all refreshments sold added to the total funds collected. “We also sold food, pizza and ice cream,” Reingold said. “There were also rubber bracelets and tee-shirts we made online for sale.” Reingold’s friend and fellow RHS student Bryan Gonzalez contributed

close friends with the family, we must help back in some way. The entire crew from Bryan G Music has decided to donate all of the proceeds made off of our first concert to the Maresca Family in regard to their tragic accident.”

According to Reingold, the event raised a total of $1,778, which will be used to help cover the Maresca family’s expenses. Describing the attendees as “happy to support the cause,” Reingold also continued on page 5

mentioned that the Marescas were “very grateful” for the effort and the money raised. “I’m just glad that we got the turn out we did,” Reingold stated. “It’s good to see everyone come out to

support the cause.” Several friends of the family also started fundraisers on gofundme.com. Christine O’Dwyer, of Landing, has a page that as of press time has raised $8,000 of its $10,000 goal.

Speaking of her friends, O’Dwyer wrote “It’s time to give back to the Marescas as they always [are] the first to give their hearts, lend a hand and help in any way possible. They have lost all of their belongings.

Roxbury PBA Wiffle Ball Tournament Raises Money For Local Child

By Sarah Schnurr ast weekend was all swings and smiles at the 12th Annual Roxbury PBA 311 Cops Care Wiffle Ball Tournament, organized each year to raise funds for children battling cancer. This year the fundraiser was hosted for Hayden Marshall, a seven year-old boy from Andover Township who has been battling Metastatic Ewing Sarcoma for the past six months. The fundraiser typically brings in anywhere between $7,000 and $10,000 from registration fees, door prizes and concessions - and of course, ice cream sales to beat the summer heat. As of last year, the tournament has raised $145,951 for children with cancer.

The double elimination tournament was set to begin Sat., July 15, at 9 a.m. at Horseshoe Lake Park baseball field in Succasunna, with two separate games for adult and children teams. This year’s event was organized by Patrol Officer Brian Feeney, who says the best part of the tournament is “being able to help out Hayden and his family in his battle against cancer; doing a little something for them.” Roxbury PBA 311 found out about Hayden through Dustin Collier, a physical therapist at Andover Mohawk Physical Therapy who was working with a lieutenant from the department. Collier had participated in the tournament in the past, and inquired if the group

had already chosen a recipient. A family friend of the Marshalls, Collier connected Feeney with Hayden’s mother, who Feeney says “was more than happy to allow us to help out Hayden.” In a letter to past and potential tournament players, Hayden is described as “a sweet, athletic, playful and loving seven year-old boy, whose beautiful smile can light up a room.” Hayden has more than the wiffle ball players and PBA members on his side- the letter says that his number one fan is his four year-old sister, Hannah. Hayden started treatment for Metastatic Ewing Sarcoma on February 27. The cancer typically occurs in the bones, or in the soft tissue surrounding the

bones. In Hayden’s case, it began in his left foot and spread to his lungs. Doctors at Hackensack Meridian Hospital anticipate 15 months of treatment: a combination of tumor removal, chemotherapy and radiation. To date, Hayden has undergone 13 weeks of treatment, which takes place every other week,

N

rest would be given to local hospitals. Hayden, whose father worked as a volunteer firefighter, was named an honorary firefighter by the department. To donate to Hayden’s cause, send a check made out to “Roxbury PBA 311 Cops Care,” at P.O. Box 174, Succasunna, N.J. 07876.

Donations Lost, Thrift Store Aborted- SOS Appeals For Financial Support And Volunteers

A

By Cheryl Conway vacated plan to open a second thrift store may have dimmed its hope for a brighter future, but the battered women’s shelter organization still hangs on to survive. Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS), a non-profit program serving homeless/battered women and children for more than four decades, had planned to open up a second thrift store in Passaic as early as January this past year. The store, Treasures Two, was going to feature furniture and clothing sales, with proceeds to cover the mortgage and utility costs incurred in operating a seven-facility shelter. Plans to open the store

at 919 Main Ave. in Passaic were stalled when the landlord was told he needed to provide a fire suppression system. In the meantime SOS was paying for storage space for months to house furniture and clothing received from generous donators. When the date to open the store was pushed to March, then April, SOS decided it could not wait any longer for the space to be available as they were losing too much money to rent the storage space. “That store won’t be ready for months,” says Sandra Ramos of Ringwood, founder and executive director of SOS. Edee Galzan, volunteer

administrative director of SOS says “SOS was losing money in storage and we couldn’t afford it.” To make matters worse, when SOS announced it had to pull out, the store’s landlord did not refund SOS all of its money owed to them. “He didn’t give us back all our money,” says Ramos. “He owes us $4,000. We paid three and a half months rent, security deposit.” When SOS stopped paying the rent for the storage space, it soon lost all of its beautiful donations, says Ramos. “It’s a gimmick,” says Ramos. The monthly storage rent had increased from $30 to $300. “We got really nice stuff,” and now it is

gone. “Wonderful merchandise over $7,000,” says Galzan. “We lost it. We had to let it go. We signed something; if you are not able to pay, they are allowed to sell it.” With one step forward and two steps back, SOS continues its appeal for monetary donations, volunteers and necessary items to keep the shelters open. With restricted monies coming in, the organization has been in jeopardy of closing its doors to hundreds of women and children. Established in 1977 as Shelter Our Sisters – Ramos began the first shelter for battered women in North America out of her three bedroom home in Hack-

ensack as early as 1970. The organization changed its name to Strengthen Our Sisters and grew as big as eight houses, two day care centers, a food pantry and a thrift store. The mission of SOS is to break the cycle of domestic violence, poverty and abuse by restoring balance and harmony through individual empowerment. To support her organization, Ramos receives limited money from sources such as the Passaic County Dept. of Human Services and private donations. Ramos currently has 17 non-paid volunteers who drive shelter residents to look for jobs and attend court, doctor appointments, social services, schools; and

run the thrift store and day care centers. SOS is currently down to seven facilities located in Newfoundland, Wanaque and West Milford, providing shelter to 150 women and children, with more calling every day. Relying on monetary support and understanding lenders has paved the way toward SOS’s shaky survival. One Livingston business person- who had given SOS $35,000 to support the second thrift store and help pay for the shelter’s utility fees- issued another $9,000 to SOS for its troubles. Ramos also managed to get the shelter’s mortgage continued on page 8

reduced from $800K to $499K. “Edee’s very organized; we are paying all our bills and trying to hold on,” says Ramos. “She’s organizing the one store.” “We do have a truck now,” says Ramos, to pick up donations. Money is needed for storage of any furniture donations, as well as money for gas to put in the truck. Ramos had been counting on $30,000 from a United Way grant but that was denied when SOS didn’t have its audit completed in time, she says. “Keeping seven shelters running is no joke,” says Ramos. SOS is $73,000 behind in the monies owed to PSEG and operating costs.

Losing the second thrift store, “This really set us back. “We are still accruing bills,” says Ramos. “They are allowing us to stay open; they see we are making an effort. They could have cut us off a long time ago.” While donations are appreciated, Galzan says SOS needs to reorganize its one thrift store for more space before accepting any furniture or large items. Financial donations to help pay for the mortgage and utilities is SOS’s greatest need, as well as volunteers to drive the residents to appointments, work at the store and shelters and landscape the properties. Other immediate items include large black con-

tractor garbage bags, toilet paper, cleaning products, non-perishable food, fresh fruits and vegetables, beds, a power lawn mower and weed whacker. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1089, Hewitt, N.J., 07421; or call 973831-6156. Those willing to donate can also go to gofundme.com/strengthenoursisters. Another option is to visit SOS’s thrift store, Treasures, at 196 Lincoln Ave., West Milford. In existence for 30 years, Treasures is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call the store at 862-248-9935 for more information. For more information on SOS go to www.strengthenoursisters.org.

ccording to the National Sleep Foundation, using a computer or electronic device before bed can make it hard to fall asleep. Studies have shown that even small electronic devices like smartphones can emit enough light to confuse the brain. Photoreceptors in the

Did You Know? retina sense light and dark, helping to align circadian rhythms to the external day-night cycle. The signals these receptors send to the brain help people be alert in the morning and fall asleep at night. But using devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptop computers before bed can miscue the brain

and promote wakefulness at a time when the body should be falling asleep. Men and women who like to read before going to bed can increase their chances of getting a good night’s sleep by reading print books or print editions of magazines or newspapers rather than e-readers or tablets.

Buy A Stud To Support Local Family’s Home Renovations

By Cheryl Conway he roof has been raised, literally, for the Spencer family who has been campaigning for its home renovations in Succasunna this past year. Before framing is complete, the community has been invited to share their blessings or meaningful words to be imbedded on the beams of the Spencer home. Contractors took off the roof June 20 and have been actively framing and adding on a second story to the Spencer home featured on the reality home improvement show “George to The Rescue” which aired April 15 on NBC. Fundraising for the renovation began in May 2016 with its Raising the Roof For Levi campaign in order to improve the living space for Jason and Jillian Spencer and their three children. The three bedroom, one-story ranch was unaccommodating for their five-year old son Levi who was born with Spina bifida, a birth defect leaving him permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Through fundraising

the community has been donating financially and creatively by helping with renovations. To continue with that support, Jillian Spencer is inviting the community to purchase a stud virtually for its second story renovations. For $10 per stud, decide on a message or a Bible verse and the Spencer will write it on the stud of their house. This will be a “foundation built on God’s work,” says Spencer, “so we know people who helped us are signed on our house with scripture.” Spencer says “it’s a constant reminder from friends, family and community that our home is built by the word of God. That it is literally written on our walls. It’s a blessing. I’m sure there will be days that it’s hard but it’s good to know there’s scripture infused in our house and to spread the scripture by those working on our house.” The Spencers will use a sharpie marker and write the designated verse on each stud that frames their house.

“It can be whatever they want,” a quote, best wishes, a Bible verse. Buy 10 studs and write 10 different things. “There’s like a billion” studs, says Spencer. By the end of June, $300 was already raised with the purchase of 30 studs, she says. Her goal is $5,000 with the Buy a Stud campaign. Participants must order by July 25 before sheet rocking begins, adds Spencer. Order through paypal at paypal.me/prayforlevi and include the requested message; or mail a check to Jillian Spencer, 2 Conduit Street, Succasunna, N.J., 07876. All donations for a stud will go to Levi Spencer’s account for house renovations. “Everything adds up, every little bit counts,” says Spencer. They originally estimated $100,000 for their house renovations- which includes framing materials, lumber, steel, electricity, rough-in for plumbing, converting furnace to gas. But soon realized they fell $50,000 short in their pro-

jection, she says. They so far raised $65,000 through their fundraising campaign. The renovations provided by GTTR and surrounding contractors has been incredible. GTTR provided a large handicap accessible bathroom, a larger room for Levi and a photography studio for Jillian. MGM Contracting in Succasunna has been framing the second story and donations have been coming in such as windows from N.J. Window and Siding in Randolph; roof materials and installation from Bryan at RJ Construction in Landing; and other companies providing material for the interior such as paint from Benjamin Moore, as well as kitchen cabinets, bathroom countertops, faucets and fixtures. The second story is estimated to provide an additional 200 sq. ft. to the Spencer home. The Spencers have been staying at Jason’s mom’s house nearby since February. They hope to return to their completed renovated home by the time school starts in September says

Spencer. The next fundraiser is the upcoming second annual Golf Tournament set for Mon., Sept. 18, at the Berkshire Valley Golf Course in Oak Ridge. Cost is $150 to play or be a sponsor for $150 to $1,000. Includes 8 a.m. breakfast and 9 a.m.

Lemonade Stand Brings Happiness, Generosity To Hopatcong School

S

taff and Students at the Hudson Maxim School were recently

treated to a free lemonade stand, and they also collected donations for child-

hood cancer support. Team Bucket Fillers is the United Way Culture and Climate Student Committee at Hudson Maxim School. The idea came during a brainstorming session about what would make Hudson Maxim an even better place to learn. Shawn George, a kindergarten student, came up with the idea for a lemonade stand. The team of kindergarten and firstgrade students helped the idea grow into a reality on a hot day during recess. To come full circle as the school year drew to

Lake Hopatcong Foundation Urging Residents To Shop Local

F

or the fifth year in a row, the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is supporting area businesses with its “Shop Local Lake Hopatcong” campaign. The LHF’s intent is that the residents will view the four towns surrounding the lake as their “local downtown” and, by shopping and partaking of the services available, will help keep it a vibrant part of the

economy. “Take up the challenge and make July your month to try new or familiar businesses in your lake town, as well as the other towns around the lake,” said Lake Hopatcong Foundation Development Director Jennifer DeWitt. “With so many restaurants, shops and things to do, you could find something new every day during the month. Help

others find your new or old favorite stomps by posting photos on social media with #ShopLocalLakeHopatcong.” Be sure to follow the Lake Hopatcong Foundation’s social media pages to join in the fun: Facebook (LakeHopatcongFoundation), Twitter (@thisisyourlake), Instagram (LakeHopatcong) and Pinterest (LakeHopatcong).

a close, Team Bucket Fillers decided to add optional donations to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. The funds were raised in memory of Alex Cafferata, the student to whom

the Hudson Maxim Buddy Bench was dedicated in October. The Buddy Bench helped spread kindness to students who were looking for friends to play with at recess all year long. The team raised $300 to

help children who are diagnosed with childhood cancer. It was a successful treat for all students and staff, with the donations going to a great cause!

Hopatcong School Volunteers Get Thank You Breakfast

T

he Hopatcong Education Association recently honored its volunteers with its annual PRIDE Volunteer Breakfast at the Durban Avenue School. This annual event, held June 14, brings together parent volunteers, staff members, administrators,

parents and children in a very special way. The theme this year was, “Our Volunteers Hit It Out of the Park!” Guests were treated to a breakfast that morning, catered by Cambiotti’s Tomato Pie Café in Landing. This breakfast demonstrated how much the staff at

the Durban Avenue School appreciates its hard-working and dedicated volunteers. Principal Tracey Hensz announced how much the staff appreciates all of the volunteers’ time and effort contributed to make this school year a success.

Community Raises Funds To Help Struggling Family Pay Mounting Bills After Loved One’s Death

By Cheryl Conway unds are still being collected from the community to help a Blairstown woman and her daughter deal with financial trouble after the sudden loss of their loved one. Long-time Roxbury resident Frank Zara, who later moved to Sparta and then settled in Blairstown, died suddenly on May 27 from a massive stroke at 60 years old. He left behind his wife of 26-years, Dotty, and daughter, Chelsea, a full-time student at Rutgers University. To help cover escalating medical bills and mortgage, Chelsea’s college friend started a Go Fund Me Page for support.

Gina Sandelli of Landing started www.gofundme. com/in-memory-of-frankzara on June 19. In just 20 days, 228 people have raised $21,675 of $25k goal. “I didn’t even know they were making a page until I saw it,” says Chelsea, who plans to return to Rutgers University in September to earn her doctorate in physical therapy after receiving her bachelor’s from University of Connecticut. “We have to pay mortgage, insurance and all the bills. My mom and I are so shocked that we got such a response; it’s really humbling.” Both mother and daughter work at restaurants:

Chelsea works as a waitress at Alice’s Restaurant in Lake Hopatcong; Dotty works overtime as a full time server at Long Horn in Parsippany. As the main household provider, Frank Zara had owned Zara Construction in Roxbury up until five years ago when he started working as a mason contractor for homes and businesses, says Chelsea. Spending more than 50 hours a week working in construction, Frank developed severe pain in his right hip. When he visited Urgent Care on April 30 for the hip pain, he had been transferred to Newton Memorial and admitted on May 1. A series of biopsies

and scans detected that the pain in his hip was due to cancer that had spread to his hips, pelvis, ribs and spine. “The most pressing issue of all was the cancer on his spine – a 5.2 cm tumor on his 3rd thoracic vertebrae,” as described on the go fund me page. “This tumor was pressing on his spinal cord. If it grew even the slightest bit, it would cause Frank to become completely paralyzed from the shoulders down. On May 19, Chelsea had her father transferred to the cancer specialists at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Philadelphia, followed by radiation treatment to shrink the tumor on

his spine. “After just five sessions of radiation, Frank had been completely drained,” as described on the go fund me page. The treatment took an extreme toll on his

body, especially when in combination with the endless testing, blood work, and extremely strong medication list.” Just days later, Frank continued on page 18

Freeholders Honor Eagle Scout, Gold Award Winners

he Morris County Board of Freeholders recently honored eight Eagle and Gold Award Scouts from across Morris County for a series of ambitious scout projects that assisted local towns, neighborhoods, fire departments, local churches and temples in projects that each required hundreds of hours of volunteer efforts by the scouts and their volunteer project teams. The freeholders presented the county certificates of achievements to the students on June 14 in Morristown. The recipients from the New View Media Group coverage area were: Victoria Lynn Carson of Troop 690, Long Valley; Khang Huynh Lieu, of Troop 155, Hanover Township; Thomas Fran-

cis McBride IV of Troop 155, Hanover Township; Aldo Joseph Bangiola of Troop 34, Morristown; and Aleks Murauskas of Troop 53, Randolph, and Mark Salotti, of Troop 188, Landing. “It is really a privilege for the Board of Freeholders to celebrate the positive efforts of these young men and women, who took it upon themselves to make positive impacts on their respective communities,’’ said Freeholder Director Doug Cabana. “They, obviously, are the future leaders of Morris County, and we salute them.’’ Each of the scouts who received county certificates have impressive personal resumes, featuring outstanding family, school, scouting and personal

achievements. The following is a snapshot of their Eagle and Gold Award Scout projects: Victoria Lynn Carson is a graduate of West Morris Central High School and attends Syracuse University. For her project, Carson created a time capsule of Long Valley to help promote town unity. She created a website and flyers to advertise the project, interviewed Washington Township officials, surveyed more than 350 students, took photos of the town, researched the town’s history, and sought donations of artifacts to be preserved. Khang Huynh Lieu is a junior at Whippany Park High School. Khang is involved with Lin Son Temple, a Buddhist Concontinued on page 21

suffered a massive, ischemic stroke, resulting in loss of speech and partial paralysis, and continued to physically decline. On May 27, Frank had passed away, surrounded by his loved ones. “As if losing a husband and father this fast, and this unexpectedly, wasn’t unimaginable enough, the medial bills that have piled in over the past three weeks have pushed Dotty and Chelsea beyond comprehension,” wrote Sandelli on the go fund me page. Although Frank had

Aetna which covered 80 percent of the medical bills, the Zaras were still to pay $70,000 down from $372,000, says Chelsea. “After his passing, Dotty and Chelsea now also need to cover all household costs,” wrote Sandelli. “On top of it all, Chelsea has pressing tuition payments due at the beginning of each semester. “When we mentioned the idea of creating a “Go Fund Me” page to the Zara’s, they quickly declined,” she continued. “They continuously stated

how uncomfortable they felt asking friends and family to assist them with their financial issues. But, after Chelsea had sent us pictures of the medical bills, we knew we had to do something. “If every person who sees this page can find it in their heart to donate just $5, $10, or $20 – anything you are comfortable with donating - we could come together to help this family ease some of this unimaginable burden,” Sandelli concluded.

gregation in Stanhope. For his project, he led a group in the remodeling the lower level of the temple. The work included painting, wallpapering and replacing ceiling lights, as part of a total remodeling effort. Thomas Francis McBride IV is also a junior at Whippany Park High School. For his Eagle project, McBride refurbished the storage room of the Howard’s Mission warehouse for the non-profit Gellman Foundation, which collects and distributes items for the homeless communities of New Jersey and New York. He led volunteers in cleaning the space, prepping and painting the walls, assembling

storage racks, tables and bins, and reorganizing the space. Aldo “Joe’’ Bangiola is a graduating student at Morristown High School. For his Eagle project, he built a brick plaza in front of the Assumption Church in Morristown, where he is an active member. Bangiola worked for a year on the project, obtaining needed town permits, raising money, and leading a team of 45 youths and adults. Mark Salotti is a graduating senior at Roxbury High School. For his Eagle project, he gave back to his town by planning and executing the beautification of Succasunna Field, with a focal point of renovating

the concession stand. His project included cleaning, sanding, power washing, and painting the stand, while replacing mulch and installing railroad ties. Aleks Murauskas is a graduate of Randolph High School and a current student at McGill University in Montreal, where he is studying software engineering. For his Eagle project, Murauskas mapped the fire hydrants in Randolph and compiled them into a database that was loaded into the township’s GPS-enabled emergency vehicles. This enables fire companies to quickly locate hydrants, enhancing their responses to fires.
