the honor of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts, as a result of this project. Iannicelli has been in scouting since 2005, when he joined Cub Scout Pack 54 under Den Leader Ted Edgar. In 2009, after achieving the Arrow of Light, the highest rank in Cub Scouts, he joined Boy Scout Troop 159 under Scoutmaster Bob William. His journey to Eagle Scout required Iannicelli to attain six prior ranks: scout, tenderfoot, 2nd class, 1st class, star and life. Scouts must successfully fulfill several requirements for each rank. They learn many important life skills, such as first aid, camping and citizenship throughout the ranks. Iannicelli also earned the required 21 merit badges and coordinated and executed a service and leadership community project. For his Eagle Scout proj-

ect, Iannicelli restored the playground at his grandfather’s church, New Beginnings Bible Church in Flanders. The project took place over the course of two months and had a total of 376 hours. The project consisted of refurbishing and re-staining three play sets, re-painting a merrygo-round and building a bench for parents to sit on and watch their children play. He obtained donations from the New Beginnings Bible Church congregation, as well as several local businesses, including Lakeside Nursery, Sherwin Williams, Home Depot, La Gratella, Roxbury Bagels, BJ’s and Amish Mike’s. Approximately 25 volunteers assisted with the project. He and his grandfather worked together to build the redwood bench over the course of several months. The newly restored playground has been a welcome renovation to the church

and the surrounding community. Iannicelli said he is very thankful for all of the leadership and guidance of the adult leaders and fel-

low scouts throughout his scouting career. He also said he wishes to thank all the generous donors that helped make this accomplishment possible.

The competition is intended to inspire students to produce a work commemorating September 11, 2001, and make a positive statement about the importance and pursuit of world peace. The faculty mentor for her project was Professor Laura Gabrielsen, of the department of English and Philosophy at CCM. “I’ve always been interested in poetry, and from a young age I’ve known the importance of acceptance and peace in our society,” said Jones. “I’ve strived to use my art to express those views. My video and poem work hand in hand, creating an atmosphere that will, hopefully, fully immerse the audience, leading them to truly understand the ef-

EMS Annual Student Unity Tour Raises Funds For Roxbury Police

eventh and eighth graders from Eisenhower Middle School in Succasunna participated in its second annual EMS Student Unity Tour last month under clear skies and warm weather at Horseshoe Lake Park. More than 270 middle schoolers and some staff rode their bikes and cheered on their classmates to raise money for the National Police Unity Tour. Student riders had the option to ride one lap, 1.75 miles, or two laps, 3.5 miles, around Horseshoe Lake Park to honor police officers that had fallen in the line of duty. EMS students were fortunate enough to ride alongside many of the local police officers that participated in

the National Unity Tour a few weeks ago to Washington, D.C. This event was started last year at the school through the Character Education Committee and has continued to grow with participation and enthusiasm. New this year, in an effort to eliminate possible obstacles of getting the bicycles to the school, students were able to drop them off the evening before while having a meet and greet for the students and their families with the Roxbury law enforcement officers. Both had a chance to meet over some dessert and coffee while making cheer signs to be used to motivate the riders. Students, staff, and officers gathered at Horseshoe

Lake for a brief opening ceremony led by Heather Roddy, EMS physical education teacher and event coordinator. Special thanks went out to local businesses and groups that took part in this year’s event. This year’s EMS Student Unity Tour raised more than $6,000 for the National Police Unity Tour. These funds will be used to send three to four Roxbury Police Officers on the tour next year. To offer support for this EMS event in the future, contact Roddy (hroddy@ roxbury.org) and Shannon Rodas (srodas@roxbury. org) at Eisenhower Middle School. The Police Unity Tour Inc. was formed in 1997 by a group of law enforcement

officers from New Jersey who rode their bicycles from Florham Park to the Memorial in Washington,

D.C. with the purpose of raising awareness of those law enforcement officers who have died in the line of

duty and financial support for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum.

The Opioid Crisis Prompts New Guidelines For Pain Management

midst a growing opioid crisis in the United States, a large majority of Americans still rely on Opioid medications for pain. Roughly 35% of people in the U.S are prescribed painkillers each year (not including those misusing the drugs without a prescription). Despite the fact that the CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommendation for Opioid medications is limited to cancer and other terminally ill patients, the prescribing and use of Opioids in America has quadrupled since 1999. Currently, more people are overdosing on opioid pain medications than heroin. This is a grim realization that things need to change and other means of pain management should be implemented. In response to the growing opioid epidemic, the ACP (American College of Physicians) has published new clinical guidelines for the treatment of low back pain in the April 2017 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine. This clinical practice guideline suggests non-invasive treatments for acute, sub-acute and chronic low back pain. The guidelines set forth are all based on a systematic review of randomized, controlled trials. For acute low back pain,

they suggest heat, massage, Acupuncture and spinal manipulation. For chronic low back pain they recommend exercise, Acupuncture, mindfulness-based stress reduction tai chi, yoga, motor control exercise, progressive relaxation, electromyography biofeedback, low-level laser therapy, operant therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, or spinal manipulation. It is only after the above methods fail that the ACP suggests a physician prescribe opioid medications. As set forth in the guidelines by the ACP, Acupuncture is a safe recommendation for both acute and chronic low back pain. Acupuncture, which has been practiced for thousands of years, offers several benefits to pain patients and is a great alternative to opioid pain medication. This safe, drugfree treatment manages pain by activating and releasing your body’s own natural pain-killers, such as endorphins, enkephalin, ednomorphin, and dynorphin. Unlike pain medications, Acupuncture actually restores healing and repair mechanisms in the body. Through research we know that Acupuncture decreases inflammation and swelling, increases circulation and blood flow to local areas, increases range of mo-

Lake Hopatcong Foundation Posts Voluntary Boating Rules

s a result of the ongoing boating concerns in Byram Cove, voluntary guidelines for responsible boating on Lake Hopatcong were drafted by homeowners, recreational boaters, anglers and lake businesses. They are being distributed through local businesses, clubs and organizations. “Whether you are a homeowner, boater, angler, sailor, swimmer, kayaker, or any user of Lake Hopatcong, we all need to share the water,’’ the organization said in a statement. “By working together to maintain a safe and healthy lake where each user respects the rights of others, we can avoid the need for more regulations and can equally

enjoy Lake Hopatcong. A little consideration can go a long way toward avoiding misunderstandings and conflicts, which affect all of us who love Lake Hopatcong. The Lake Hopatcong guidelines are encouraged to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species by cleaning boats, trailers, fishing gear and other equipment that has recently been in other bodies of water. The are never to throw trash in the lake, and are encouraged to practice proper fueling techniques and use pump-out facilities if applicable. Boaters are asked to consider the impact their

boat wake has for those fishing, kayaking, enjoying time on a moored boat or on shore. They are asked to respect private property and to not trespass on private land. Boaters are encouraged to lend a hand, and assist anyone in distress on the lake as long as it can be done safely. Boaters should pass behind unpowered vessels like sailboats, rowboats, and kayaks, and treat other boaters, anglers and recreational users with courtesy and respect. When anchoring, boaters should choose a spot that does not impede navigation.

What Moms Need To Know About Summer Nutrition For Kids

ith summer in full force, kids are busy with physical activities and whether it’s little league baseball games, swim team or summer camp, they’re more active than ever. Moms, nutritionists and pediatricians alike know active kids and developing bones and muscles need essential nutrients to grow strong, but The Dietary Guidelines for Americans say most Americans, including children, actually aren’t getting enough fiber, calcium, vitamin D and potassium in their diets. Moms can keep up by

making sure kids fuel their bodies with proper nutrition and stay hydrated at the same time. As a drink kids already love the taste of, milk is a great choice when moms want to serve delicious and natural, high-quality protein for kids before sending them off on summer adventures. Many are also surprised to learn that milk can help hydrate after exercise due to its natural electrolytes and fluids. Milk plays an important role for kids’ meals and snacks, providing three of the four nutrients most Americans, including kids,

aren’t getting enough of (calcium, vitamin D and potassium), and it’s the top food source of these nutrients, to boot.1 Plus, with 8 grams of protein per every 8-ounce glass, the farmfresh beverage is a great way to help the whole family kick start the day. One way to hit a home run for your kids is by stepping up to the breakfast plate with delicious baseball pancakes. Served with an 8-ounce glass of milk, this breakfast is the perfect combo to help kids fuel up with protein in the morning. continued on page 21

Lighting To Be Added To Lake Hopatcong Bridges This Summer

I

nstallation of boating navigation lights on two Lake Hopatcong bridges in Jefferson will begin in late June, now that the project has gained approval by the Morris County Board of Freeholders. The Freeholders have awarded a bid contract for $136,545 to Fai-Gon Electric, Inc., of Piscataway, to install safety lights on county bridges over Espanong Road and Brady Road in Jefferson.

T

The project was designed by Boswell Engineering. There are no existing lights on the two bridges, which cross over busy navigable waters, to alert boaters to the oncoming structures. Currently, the county employs reflectorized signs attached to the bridge. The state Department of Transportation, in a review of bridges, advised the county to upgrade the reflectors with full lighting to

meet U.S. Coast Guard regulations. These are the only two bridges in the county requiring such lighting. “Just as we do with the county’s road network, it is important to maintain and upgrade our ridge system to ensure safe navigable waters, especially on busy Lake Hopatcong,’’ said Freeholder John Cesaro, the county governing board’s public works liaison.

Did You Know?

he phrase “tying the knot” is synonymous with getting married. Although the words can represent the symbolic joining of two lives together, in some cultures, getting

married actually requires tying a knot. The custom traces its origins to an ancient Babylonian tradition in which threads from the clothes of both the bride and groom were tied in a

knot to represent the couple’s union. Other cultures have embraced this tradition, and couples tie ceremonial knots during their wedding ceremonies.
