Licensed Drone Photographer Captures Beauty from Above

By Steve Sears my Lewin knows how her “friend,” her DJI Mavic Air 2 Aerial drone, feels. “One of my birthday gifts,” she says, “was a helicopter ride in New York City, and it was with the doors off. I was strapped in, and my camera was strapped in, and I was a drone in the sky. The whole time. I just kept envisioning this is what it feels like to be my drone up there. I became a drone!” she says ecstatically. Lewin received her Part 107 FAA license in October 2020. “This is fairly new for me. One of the advantages of drone photography is I enjoy having, I love having, a bird’s eye view. I’ve had my fair share of climbing up on nine-foot ladders to take pictures.” It’s the best of all worlds. “Now – legally, when there’s no restrictions - I can fly up to 400 feet, and see down below. You know, when you angle the camera straight down and you’re seeing what’s down there, it’s incredible, but then when you don’t angle the camera below, and you’re going straight across to the horizon, it’s also incredible. So, there’s definitely an advantage of drone photography versus traditional photography.” A camera is mounted at the front of Lewin’s drone, and she has ability to adjust the camera up and down and move the drone from side to side. Her captures are breathtaking. Lewin has been a

When I was in high school - it may have been my sophomore junior year, I’m not sure - I took a photography class, and fell in love.” Torn between both interests, she still applied to FIT, but pursued her photographic interests, combining both. Runway models and more were captured within her lenses, and it solidified her love for photography. She then attended the Rochester Institute of Technology, at that time the top-rated photography school in the country. Lewin’s photography

TINA CALI REALTOR career actually runs parallel with her event planning job, where she helps plan both corporate and social events. “It was the owner of the company that introduced me to drone photography. He has a drone. I was hooked and I admired it, and it was then that it was always planted in my head that I need to do this.” Ironically enough, then Covid19 happened, and the event planning business took a sojourn. “I was a little lost,” says Lewin. to the rescue. “It was the drone photography; buying a drone just excited me. I started flying in July.” Unable to get together with people, her drone became a good, reliable friend. She has her favorites. One of Lewin’s photos is of an older, decommissioned shoal lighthouse in Raritan Bay. No longer in use, a shore bird now calls it home, it nesting and caring for its young on the beacon. “That entire one is really one of continued on page 8

Wellness Wednesday Brings Doggies to Wayne Hills

T

welve therapy dogs visited Wayne Hills High School in June for “Wellness Wednesday,” and dozens of students and staff came out to visit the cuddly pups, destress, and chat with their owners. After more than a year of suspended visits during the pandemic, the dogs have more love than ever to share, and the students have been asking for them to return. When the CDC relaxed some restrictions in late spring, the dog handlers got busy scheduling as many school visits as possible during the last month of school. BFFs Gavin and Muttley are two Shetland Sheepdog therapy dogs who live with their mistresses, Linda DeYoung

and Karen Ciszewski-Quinn, in Wayne. They have been busy this June listening to classes read to them at Lafayette Elementary School; destressing students at both Wayne Hills High School and Wayne Valley High School; and visiting adults at Foundabilities (formerly Foundation for the Handicapped) which recently reopened after the pandemic. All of the therapy dogs are obedience-trained, and then evaluated, tested and certified with Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs of NJ, Inc. Several area libraries are scheduling the dogs to listen to children read during this month, and many of the handlers hope to resume visits in senior living facilities soon.

5 Summer Tax Savings Opportunities

h, summer. The weather is warm, kids are out of school, and it’s time to think about tax saving opportunities! Here are five ways you can enjoy your normal summertime activities and save on taxes: Rent out your property tax-free. If you have a cabin, condo, or similar property, consider renting it out for two weeks. The rental income you receive on property rented for less than 15 days per year is not considered taxable income. In addition, you can still deduct your mortgage interest expense and property taxes in full as itemized deductions!. Track the rental days closely — going over 14 days means all rent is taxable and rental income rules apply. Take a tax credit for summer childcare. For many working parents, the summer comes with the added challenge of finding care for their children. Thankfully, the Child and Dependent Care Credit can cover 20-35 percent of qualified childcare expenses for your children under the age of 13. Eligible types of care include day care, nanny fees and day camps (overnight camps and summer school do not qualify).

Hire your kids. If you own a business, hire your kids. If you are a sole proprietor and your child is under age 18, you can pay them to work without withholding or paying Social Security and Medicare tax. Have a garage sale. In general, the money you make from a yard or garage sale is tax-free because you sell your goods for less than you originally paid for them. Once the sale is over, donate the remaining items to a qualified charity to get a potential charitable donation deduction. Just remember to keep a log of the items you donate and ask for a receipt. Start a Roth IRA for your children. Roth IRA contributions are limited to the amount of income your child earns, so earned income is key. This can include income from mowing lawns or selling lemonade. Start making contributions as soon as your child makes some money to take advantage of the tax-free earnings available in a Roth IRA. Taking the time this summer to execute these tips can put extra money in your pocket right away and provide you taxsaving happiness in the future.

Hats Off to the Resilient PCTVS Class of 2021

Some of the members of the Passaic County Technical School Class of 2021 as they celebrated post-commencement

O

n a picture-perfect day, blue and white gowns billowed in the breeze and ear-to-ear smiles beamed on the faces of each of the 827 students who proudly marched through the festive Bulldog arch to the sound of the traditional ‘Pomp and Circumstance.’ With two in-person events to accommodate the size of the class and the attendees, the Passaic County Technical and Vocational Schools’ 57th commencement ceremonies on Wednesday, June 23 marked a joyous return to normalcy and the start of a hopeful new chapter. Following an unconventional year of remote, hybrid, and in-person learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, graduation day was that much sweeter. The cheers were louder than ever and the excitement was palpable as families, faculty, and friends gathered together at the high school’s athletic field to celebrate the momentous occasion. Additional viewers eagerly watched from home, as the ceremonies were live-streamed to the PCTVS YouTube channel. A sincere welcome from Class President Rick Kanashiro preceded the Pledge of Allegiance, which was led by Class Secretary Margaret De la Cruz. With the posting of the

colors by cadets from NJROTC, students from the School of Performing Arts sang both the National Anthem and the spirited school song. Motivating speeches from the Class of 2021’s top two scholars followed. Salutatorian Lynda Majagah, a student of the Academy of Medical Arts, addressed her class, calling on them to be passionate, determined masters of their own destiny. Valedictorian Roohan Patel, also from the Academy of Medical Arts, echoed his classmate’s encouraging message. “Keep rising until the universe knows your name,” Patel said. After introducing the attending elected officials and dignitaries, Superintendent John Maiello and Principal Antonio Garcia congratulated the graduates next. Passaic County Commissioners Sandi Lazzara and John Bartlett spoke as well, before Board of Education President Michael Coscia officially accepted the Class of 2021 and diplomas were distributed to the new graduates. With the movement of tassels and the subsequent tossing of the caps, four years of hard work came to a close and the future looks nothing but bright for the PCTVS Class of 2021!

Drone Photographer... continued from front page my favorites. Anything really by the beach, where you see the breaks of the rocks on water – those are really fun.” Then there’s the shot of a group of apartment houses in Woodland Park near Clifton. “What I love about this photograph is that it’s literally as if somebody just dug a big hole in the forest and planted these homes.” She has also set her drone aloft and gotten nifty photos in her current home of Wayne. For Lewin, whose last showcase of her work at a venue was during her last year at RIT, a book of her work is something she is considering.

When she goes to a site and readies her drone for the sky, Amy Lewin calls it an “adrenaline rush.” “It’s a thrill,” she states. “I guess people get a thrill from jumping out of airplanes or riding motorcycles - it’s that kind of excitement. And, you know, once I’m done flying and I’ve now exhausted all my batteries, I immediately come home, and I am downloading my images like it cannot wait. It has to be immediate, and I get really - really – excited.” For more information about Lewin and to view her work, visit www.amylewinphoto. com.

How to Help Pets Maintain Healthy Weights Like their human companions, pets can struggle with their weight. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), in 2014, an estimated 53 percent of dogs and 58 percent of cats in the United States were overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese can shorten pets’ lives by increasing their risk for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, cancer, and osteoarthritis. The APOP estimates that unhealthy weights can shave up to 2.5 years off of pets’ lives. Sedentary lifestyles and overeating can contribute to weight gain in cats and dogs. In addition, choosing the wrong foods for an animal’s activity level may contribute to weight gain. Is my pet too heavy? Many pet owners miss signs that their pets are maintaining unhealthy weights. Pet owners may have a distorted perception of just what qualifies as a healthy weight, thinking a few extra pounds make for a robust pet. But those extra pounds could be causing substantial harm to cats and dogs. The APOP lists healthy weight guidelines for cats and dogs. Cats are easily weighed by

weighing yourself and then weighing yourself while holding the cat. Subtract your weight, and then you will know how much the cat weighs. Dogs require larger scales, and this is something best handled at a veterinarian’s office. Wellness visits provide more opportunities to get accurate assessments of pets’ weights. Vets can conduct visual assessments to determine if pets are maintaining healthy weights while also sharing information about the ideal weight for your particular animal. Cats’ and dogs’ waists should be visible when viewed from above. If your pet seems thick in the middle, chances are he or she can stand to lose some weight. Increasing activity Exercise and healthy eating are the keys to getting cats and dogs to shed some pounds (animals suffering from illness may need to pursue other avenues to weight loss). Ask the vet how much your pet needs to lose and the role that diet can play in helping your pet to lose weight. Reduce caloric intake accordingly until pets reach the weight their vet recommends. When pets are already overweight, adhering to guidelines on food packaging continued on page 11

Help Pets Maintain Healthy Weights... continued from page 10 may make it difficult for pets to lose weight. Exercise is another key to healthy weight loss. Dogs can go out for walks or engage in other aerobic activity, such as playing games of fetch. It can be more challenging to get cats to exercise. Toys that play into a feline’s predatory nature, such as things they have to hunt or chase, may inspire cats to move more. Overweight pets need exercise and changes to their diets in order to lose weight and extend their life expectancies.

Consult your veterinarian for advice on how to help pets shed pounds they can keep off for years to come. Dr. Matthew Krupnick is the owner of the Pequannock Animal Hospital. Hackettstown Man Seeking Archeological Answers

ne man in Hackettstown came across a unique item as he was gardening. Bob Bodine was moving around a flowerpot and doing yard work. As he was smoothing out some dirt, a white object caught his eye. After examining it more closely, Bodine called for his wife to check out his find. “Something white was just laying in the ground and I thought ‘what the heck is that?’ I looked closer and it really struck me that it was in the shape of an arrow. I picked it up out of the dirt and when I turned it over, it knocked my socks off,” Bodine said. What he thought was an arrowhead originally, Bodine thinks he has found a spearhead. The white object has very ornate carvings on it. There is an Indian woman that is carved out with much attention to detail. He’s unsure of how long it has been on his property and he is desperately seeking answers. He’s talked with folks at the Hackettstown Library, local historical societies, and even a Centenary University professor. Someone even suggested contacting the Museum of Natural History. “This has been driving me crazy ever since I found it,” Bodine said. Bodine happily shows his find to anyone.

The mysterious item found in the Bodine’s yard

He’s hoping that someone may be able to identify where it came from and what it exactly is. If you might be able to help answer some of his questions, please email joe@newviewmg.com.

The Value of Cord Blood Banking: What Pregnant Women Should Know

A

By Chris Bauer MD re you currently pregnant and wondering about the value of cord blood banking? If so, then you are not alone. Cord blood banking has become more common in the last thirty years. There are private and public cord blood companies that can offer patients different options on how their cord blood can be used and stored. Public cord blood collection can offer therapies for other people and can offer opportunities for further research. Cord blood collection is the process in which after the delivery of a baby, the blood from the umbilical cord is collected by the medical provider that did the delivery. Prior to her delivery, the mother will make the arrangements with the cord blood company and with her obstetrician. There are 28 cord blood banking companies in North America for patients to choose from according to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Most of the time the consumer will be provided with a cord blood collection kit that she will bring with her when she goes to deliver her baby. Cord blood can be collected

whether a patient has a vaginal or a cesarean section. Several ounces of blood are needed in order to have a specimen that can be processed. If delayed cord clamping must be done to assist the health of the infant, then cord blood collection may not be possible. Over 80 different medical conditions can be treated using material from cord blood banking. There currently is significant research into how more diseases can be treated using cord blood specimen. After the birth of the baby, the cord blood is collected. The cord blood is then stored and if the child develops one of the medical conditions where cord blood could be used as a treatment then the parents will let the cord blood collection company know and further arrangements will be made. Some of the more common medical conditions that can be treated with fetal cord blood include Sickle Cell anemia, type 1 diabetes, cerebral palsy, thalassemia, leukemia and lymphoma. In addition, some rarer diseases such as Fanconi anemia, DiGeorge Syndrome, and Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disorder(SCID) can also be treated with cord blood.

The technology and research involved in fetal cord blood usage is rapidly growing every year. There is currently significant research and more clinical trials into how more diseases can be treated using cord blood specimen. The basis of cord blood collection is that inside the umbilical cord blood that is collected are stem cells. Stem cells are cells that can form into the type of cells that the body needs at that time such as red cells, platelets, and white cells. These cells are from the babies own body. There is very minimal risk for a potential transfusion to fail because of an incompatibility with blood type and antibody. Due to a families shared genetic information first-degree relatives (parents and siblings) and seconddegree relatives (grandparents and uncles, etc.) could potentially use the cord blood collected from one family member. Cord blood collection could be greatly beneficial for any person. Schedule an informed conversation with your women’s health provider to answer any questions you may have about cord blood banking.

New Scouts BSA Female Troop Created

C

By Steve Sears hartered by Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Wayne, the new Scouts BSA Female Troop 3192 has begun. The exciting opportunity is open to females ages 11 to 18. “Troop 3192 is a Boys Scouts of America Troop for females,” explains Cristina Earle, Committee Chair. “Young ladies who have earned their Arrow of Light award as a Cub Scout, or who are at least 11 years old are welcome to join.” The troop had their first meeting on Tuesday, June 15, and through the summer, the troop will be meeting every other week, and getting together once or twice a month for a weekend hike or other outdoor activity. There are currently five scouts who are part of the unit, each of their parents having signed up to be part of the leadership. “We are looking forward to three more scouts completing their Arrow of Light as Cub Scouts this year and joining the troop soon,” says Earle. Earle became involved in the BSA 7 years ago when her son joined the local Pack as a Tiger when he was in first grade. “My younger daughter came to many of his meetings and outings and enjoyed the structure and activities,” she says. “My husband and I both took on leadership roles in our son’s Pack. I was a committee member, and took on various roles through the years: fund raising, secretary, event organization. In May 2018 BSA announced girls could join Packs and Troops. My daughter, Anna, immediately said she wanted to join. In September 2018, when she was in second grade, Anna joined a Pack, and I joined as a Den Leader. The following year we joined Pack 192. I continued my leadership

as a Den Leader, as well as a committee member.” Shortly after joining Pack 192, conversation started among the Earles about when they would form a female troop, to allow the girls from the Pack to continue their scouting journey in a female troop. “Ryan’s daughter, and my daughter are the same age and in the same Den. Our individual skill sets led to me taking on the position of Committee Chair to form the female troop, and Ryan taking on the position Scoutmaster. Our daughters are both Arrow of Light scouts, so both will be ready to bridge into a troop very soon. The current troop is made up of one girl who has already earned her Arrow of Light with Pack 192, and 4 girls from the community who have never been in scouting with the BSA, but were interested in joining.” Burke started with the Boy Scouts of America when he was a youth. He was inducted into the BSA’s National Honor Society called “The Order of the Arrow” and earned his Eagle Scout with Troop 308 out of Waldwick, New Jersey. After turning 18, he joined the leadership of that troop to help mentor the younger generation of scouts. “I rejoined scouting as an Assistant Scoutmaster with my son’s Troop. In 2019, when BSA made their historical announcement allowing females to earn the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, my daughter decided she wanted to join. Victoria joined Cub Scout Pack 192 and is on her way to earning her AOL with the other trail blazers!” After earning their AOL rank, they will then bridge over to the older program called Scouts BSA. “Cristina and I worked hard to ensure our daughters would have a local program where they could continue their trail to Eagle,” says Burke.

“Troop 3192 is the first Scouts BSA troop for girls in the Wayne community. We are open for any girl from the ages of 11 to 17 who are interested in leadership and outdoor adventures.” If someone is interested in joining the unit, they can reach out via email to membership@Troop3192.com. More information can be found on the troop’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/Troop3192, and the troop’s website, www.Troop3192.com.

Wayne Toastmasters Help You Find Your Voice

S

By Jillian Risberg hy, quiet, introverted, fear of public speaking, not a social butterfly? No problem. For 60 years Wayne Toastmasters Club has helped people of all ages and walks of life become more confident communicators, public speakers, and leaders. Current VP of Membership and past Club Treasurer, Eileen Kirschbrown, has experienced such growth. “In my role as Research Manager for a prominent Digital Market Research Company, I bring over 30 years of business experience. I realized I needed to improve my communication skills to be marketable and current. To this end, I thought Toastmasters would help me to develop my communication skills in a nonthreatening environment. I have not been disappointed. Toastmasters is a wonderful organization!” There are 20 current members of Wayne Toastmasters, which is quite an accomplishment considering the past year. “We have continual interest; I think, honestly, it’s a really good club,” says Laura Graziano, past Club President and current new-member Mentor. “We run a good meeting; have great members and we’re nurturing.” Meetings are the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, 7-8:30pm on Zoom, and live meetings may be coming soon.

According to Graziano, one can grow as a speaker and leader with the club’s constructive feedback on speeches. “We like to use what they call the ‘sandwich method,’” the motivational speaker/personal development coach says. “Your evaluator will say something positive about your speech, then give suggestions for improvement, and close with another positive message.” She says they look at different aspects of your speech — eye contact, gestures, vocal variety, connection with the audience. Plus, they count filler words like “ah” and “um,” and all speeches are timed. Individuals can also grow their impromptu speaking skills through segments of the meeting dedicated to answering impromptu questions -- the 30-Second Go Round and Table Topics. Personal and professional development through Pathways, Toastmasters’ newer online education program, is composed of 11 paths that teach more than 300 unique competencies. “Every path has the Icebreaker talk about yourself, Researching and Presenting to learn how to design a speech and use visuals, and Evaluation and Feedback for improvement. Evaluating is key in Toastmasters, not only to receive feedback as a speaker, but also to become an effective evaluator for other speakers.”

There’s flexibility about the topics you choose. “Elective projects might have a choice of 12; pick one that speaks to you,” says Graziano. She recently started working in the new online Pathways program in the ‘Motivational Strategies’ and ‘Effective Coaching’ Paths. Each path is divided into five

levels, which build in complexity from Level 1–5. At each level, the individual completes two to three projects to earn a digital badge and certificate. For fledgling Toastmasters, she says it’s whatever you make it, and you can focus on your own specific goals. “Take things at your own pace,” the continued on page 18

Wayne Toastmasters... continued from page 15 motivational speaker says. “We have members who don’t give a speech until they’re a member for a year. They volunteer for other roles until they feel comfortable. Other people join, go to a couple of meetings, and jump right in.” A new member, Justin Brzostowski, and the coach worked together a couple of times to prepare him for the Icebreaker. An experienced mentor can help on your journey. “I saw such a huge advantage to that,” Graziano says. “He hit the ground running.” And Justin attests to that, “The Icebreaker was intimidating at first, but with the help of my mentor, I was able to organize my thoughts and deliver a more effective speech. The group is so encouraging and helps each member grow towards their goals.” Toastmasters International follows a hierarchy: club (level) — area — division — district. Wayne Toastmasters is part of District 83, which includes all of Northern New Jersey, Rockland County and Staten Island. When Graziano first joined Toastmasters in 2014 after starting her own business, Personal BEST Coaching & Programs, she would spend a couple weeks working on any talk she had to give. “Now I can actually put together a talk in a couple of hours,” she says, though for a client it would take more preparation. “I had been giving personal growth retreats and workshops and wanted to feel more comfortable in front of larger groups,” she says. “Toastmasters helped me be a confident speaker and leader.” “Now I get paid for speaking engagements,” she says. “I also belong to a number of associations; give talks for those groups and do team building,” Graziano first started in the traditional Legacy program, which had a communication track and a leadership track with manuals for each. The core of the communication track was the Competent Communicator Manual, containing 10 speech projects to help gain the basic skills needed to present an effective speech. The core of the leadership track was the Competent Leader Manual, with 10 leadership projects to help develop the basic skills needed to be an effective leader. “Once completing your Competent Communicator, you could select two other manuals, one might be on storytelling, one on persuasive speaking,” says Graziano, adding that each manual contained another five speeches and forms for your assigned meeting evaluator (who) must complete a written evaluation of your talk, and return it to you. The personal development coach was an Advanced Communicator Bronze when they introduced the new online Pathways program.

It was the year she was president of the club, 2017-2018. “A lot of my time was spent leading the club, introducing the new online system,” the personal development coach says. “When I was ready to move ahead personally the following year towards becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster, the pandemic hit.” Everyone who had progressed in the Legacy system was given until June 2020 to complete whatever they were working on before the new online Pathways program would take over. “I felt like I had accomplished too much already and didn’t want to just throw it away and start over,” says Graziano. She stated that it was a crazy time because part of becoming a DTM required one to give about 60 different talks and many leadership projects; including club contests, high performing leadership presentations on effective coaching and more, and also serving in the District. “I wanted to serve our District as a club coach for a struggling club,” says Graziano, who was assigned to ‘Dining to Speak’ Toastmasters (Dec. 2019), which she eventually joined. “In order for me to get my DTM award, I had to coach the club to Distinguished status.” They immediately lost three members when COVID hit. “We had to replace three and grow another five; a small club of 11 had to gain eight new members,” says the motivational speaker, adding the onset of COVID made it a huge undertaking. The club pulled out all the stops. Plus, there are educational goals one must meet, according to the coach. She says Pathways was met with resistance from some of the old timers used to working in Legacy. But they worked it out, and the club rallied. “We met 10 out of 10 goals last year,” and the coach says that with her guidance, ‘Dining to Speak’ grew to 16 members and reached the highest club status of ‘President’s Distinguished.’ On June 30, 2020, Graziano personally met the highest level of achievement for a Toastmaster, receiving her Distinguished Toastmaster Award (for Public Speaking & Leadership). “We inspire one another,” and Graziano says they help each other succeed. “When new people come, they get that right off the bat.” Current Wayne Toastmasters Club President, Kathy Fieggen, agrees and would like to invite you to be a guest at one of their upcoming club meetings to see for yourself. “Guests are always welcome and encouraged to participate, plus we always have fun!” For more information, visit www.wayne. toastmastersclubs.org.

I Remember Dad:

M

By Richard Mabey Jr. y beloved father was a man who was immensely proud of the patriotic heritage of our family name. Dad and I spent a lot of time, from the time I was in my freshman year of high school, researching our family history. My father was always very proud of the patriotic aspect of the Mabey name. Benjamin Mabey, a cousin of my great grandfather, was a true American hero. Benjamin was a Private in the Third New Jersey Infantry during the Civil War. Benjamin enlisted in the Union Army on May 29, 1861. He fought in several battles. Benjamin was seriously wounded in battle. His battle wound left him paralyzed from the waist down, for the rest of his life. Benjamin received a full honorable discharge from the Union Army on May 24, 1864. After he came home from being wounded in the Civil War, he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. My grandfather’s brother, Earl Mabey, was killed in action in France during World War I. My Great Grandmother, Dora Mabey, never healed from having lost her son in war. I remember as a child, there were times when she would break down and

To Honor Thy Heritage cry, sitting in her rocking chair on the front porch of the old Mabey Homestead. Dad and his brother, Edward, were both veterans of World War II. Dad’s cousin, Delbert McNeill, was also a World War II veteran. Two of Dad’s younger brothers, Carl and David, were veterans of the Korean War. And Dad’s nephew, Wesley, was a veteran of the Vietnam War. In the old Lincoln Park Museum, on Main Street, there were several boxes of old pictures that were kept in the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet in the museum. Art Smith, a fellow member of the Beavertown (Lincoln Park) Historical Society, had found an old picture of my Great Uncle Earl standing beside the smaller home of the Mabey Estate, that once stood at the corner of Mabey Lane and Main Street. As a gift to my dad, Art had the picture of Great Uncle Earl enlarged and he took the time to frame it. It was a most beautiful tribute to my patriotic great uncle. During the 1990’s, we used to meet on Saturday mornings at the Lincoln Park Museum and set up shift times, in order to have the museum open from nine in the morning till five in the evening. One Saturday morning, in the early Summer of 1991, Dad and I arrived at the

museum, about 10 minutes before nine, Art was waiting for us inside the museum. As we opened the door to the museum, there sat Art with a big smile on his face. “Dick, I got something to show you,” Art said with a song in his voice. And then Art led Dad to one of the pegboard display stands to show my father the framed picture of Dad’s Uncle Earl. My father was quite taken with the picture. Here was the rugged outdoorsman, the Scoutmaster, the

long-distance truck driver, almost in tears. Dad so sincerely and earnestly thanked Art Smith that Saturday morning, back in the early Summer of 1991. Art insisted that I take Dad’s picture, standing beside the photo of my father’s beloved uncle. Today, when I look at that picture, it brings back all of the emotions that transcended when Art showed Dad the tribute picture of Earl Mabey. continued on page 21

Financial Tips for Parents to Teach Their Children

C

hildren often dream of the day they can call themselves grown-ups, but few look forward to - let alone think about - the financial realities of independence. It’s never too early to start teaching your children how to save money and spend responsibly. “As parents, our job is to set our children up for success,” Bank of America’s Head of Deposit Products Erin McCullen said. “Giving our kids a strong foundation of financial skills like budgeting and saving is a key part in ensuring they thrive as adults and can concentrate on the things they love.” Consider these financial tips from McCullen: Establish a budget. Budgeting is a lifelong skill. Teaching young adults how to budget can help them plan spending, save money, create goals and address financial anxiety. According to a Bank of America survey, 52% of Americans said they didn’t start budgeting until they began their first full-time job. If your kids are on the younger side, they likely don’t have a steady income, but you can still help them practice budgeting with allowances or gifts from relatives or friends. Keep it simple: teach them to track

the money they receive and separate it into spend-now and spend-later categories. Later, when you’re helping your kids create an adult budget, you’ll need to expand those categories to track expenses like housing costs and groceries. From there, measure these categories against their total monthly income. Ideally, they should have more money coming in than going out. This process can help identify must-have vs. want-to-have purchases while highlighting areas to cut back on spending or finding room to save. Save regularly and consistently. Making consistent, automatic contributions to a savings account can create a mindset that will be valuable as your children get older. “It is never too early to open a savings account,” McCullen said. “Even if your children don’t yet have any bills or financial obligations, teach them to set aside some of the money from their allowance or even gifts from family or friends. Helping children learn to save early-on, even for a small purchase, can help them develop a consistent savings habit over time.” Young adults should also consider programs like Keep the Change, which helps build savings automatically by rounding up debit card purchases to the nearest dollar

amount and transferring the change from a checking account to a savings account. Make a finance checklist. Young adults have a lot on their minds at the end of their final semester at school. As they begin to transition from student life to the working world, one way to help them stay on track is to prepare a checklist of things to do before they graduate and start their jobs.

This list can include creating a budgeting and tracking strategy, opening a savings account to begin setting aside money from future paychecks or checking in with a financial planner to discuss transitions and what’s to come. I’m not sure if I

Financial Lessons at Every Age From preschool through college, every stage of school is designed to prepare kids for life-long success, but learning about finances is one area that can be especially impactful for children in the long term. Consider these ways kids can learn about money throughout childhood as recommended by the experts at Bank of America: Elementary School - Focus on basics like saving small change and planning how to spend it. As kids begin to learn fundamental math, you can introduce them to the concept of making a spending plan. Apply these lessons to toys or gifts they want and teach them to set aside money until they have enough to buy the toy of their dreams. Middle School Those early mathematical lessons around spending can be expanded to include real-life decision making and budget creation, including what should be accounted for and considered before making a purchase. go to the mall with their friends, highlight the thought process involved in spending before they make impulse purchases. High School - As adulthood begins to draw nearer, it’s worth exploring the fundamentals of credit scores, credit cards, investing, saving for retirement, homeownership and more so that, upon graduation, teens can start putting those lessons into practice. High school seniors should also educate themselves on student loans, as debt often becomes a reality for those who attend college, and understanding the facts can help them make more informed choices. Bonus tip: If your high schoolers have jobs, even if it’s just part-time, it can be helpful to discuss taxes and how to manage receiving consistent income. It can guide them in creating balanced and accurate budgets in the future. College - Build credit by opening a credit card account to help achieve goals later in life, such as purchasing a home. With a career just a few years away (or less), college is also a smart time to begin reading into the basics of 401(k)s, starting an emergency fund or even learning the basics of investing.

A Fourth of July Story

T

By Richard Mabey Jr. here was a certain magic in the Summer of 1964. I was 10 years old and had just completed Mrs. Raimo’s fifth grade class. When I had started the fifth grade, Mrs. Raimo was known to us as Miss DelGiorno. In the early Spring of 1964, Miss DelGiorno announced to all of us that she was getting married on the weekend and that we would have a substitute teacher for the next week. I was shocked and broken hearted. For if truth be told, I had an incurable crush on Miss DelGiorno and now she was getting married! Lenny Esposito was just about the biggest wise guy in all of Chapel Hill School. As fate would have it, Lenny sat next to me in Miss DelGiorno’s fifth grade class. Yes, even at 67, I still more fondly remember my old fifth grade teacher as Miss DelGiorno. Not only was Lenny Esposito the biggest wise guy in all of Chapel Hill School, he was also the biggest braggard. He once told a group of us boys that his father was an FBI Agent and that his father had a special scope machine, in his basement, that could see through walls. Even though I knew that Lenny was full of donkey dust, there was a tiny part of me that wondered if there was

any truth to Lenny’s outrageous tall tales. It was the era of metal lunch boxes, that came complete with a little thermos. I remember that I had a Popeye the Sailor Man lunchbox, that I had from the third grade. Lenny had a lunch box with a picture of Frankenstein on it. Fate and Destiny are such strange twins. One lunch time, Lenny sat across from my best friend, Stuart Steinhauser and I. In a brief moment of being kind and decent, Lenny showed us what he had stored in his lunch box. There, setting beneath his wax paper covered peanut butter and jelly sandwich, was a small paper bag. Lenny then looked at Stuart and I with his wise guy smirk, “betcha you chumps wanna know what’s inside this bag?” To Lenny Esposito, we were all chumps. He rarely called any of the other boys by their names. We were all chumps to Lenny, because he was the selfappointed coolest kid in all of Chapel Hill School. “I’ll tell ya’ what, for a nickel, I’ll let ya’ see what’s in this bag. Believe me, ya’ won’t be disappointed,” Lenny told us. Lenny always spoke out of the corner of his mouth. He loved to watch the old gangster movies and he worked very hard to speak continued on page 23

Fourth of July Story... continued from page 22 the way he imagined a hard-nosed gangster would talk. So, between Stuart and myself, we came up with the five cents. I cannot remember which one of us put in the extra penny. Lenny grabbed the five pennies from the table then handed us his paper bag. Stuart held the paper bag and carefully opened it. I took on the role of lookout for any of the teachers walking around the lunchroom. And, to our surprise, there it was. A most incredible sight for sure. There must have been two dozen firecrackers in Lenny’s little brown bag. Then to our surprise, Lenny offered us the deal of a lifetime. “Tell ya’ what chumps, for one thin dime, I’ll let you chumps have three of them firecrackers. Ya’ ain’t gonna get a better deal than that. I had all of 12 cents left in my pocket. And, that was reserved for the newest Batman comic book. Instinctively, by telepathy, Stuart and I communicated an unspoken agreement and we both took out a nickel from our pants pockets. A cold sweat flowed from the pores of the palms of our hands as Lenny took the two nickels and nodded to Stuart, with his wise guy’s grin, that it was okay

to take three firecrackers from the bag. In a flash of millisecond, Stuart put the three firecrackers in his right pants pocket. Stuart folded up the open end of Lenny’s little paper bag and handed it back to Lenny. The deal was done. Stuart kept the three firecrackers in a plastic bag, in the wooden box, of his tree fort. Stuart and I agreed that on the Fourth of July, we would light all three firecrackers! So, fast forward to the eve of the Fourth of July. Stuart came over to my house on the afternoon of the third of July. We set up the old pup tent in the backyard. Stuart had our three firecrackers, hidden in the bottom of his knapsack. The plan was to get up at the crack of dawn, run down the path at the end of Mabey Lane to the old Morris Canal. And, there by the banks of the old canal, we planned on lighting our three firecrackers. The anticipation, that night, was nerve racking. When the sun began to rise in the east, Stuart and I both instinctively awoken. My heart was pounding like an old bass drum, as Stuart reached into his knapsack and pulled out the three firecrackers, safe and sound in the little plastic bag. Stuart and I ran down the wooded path to the banks of the old Morris Canal. We ran to the big flat rock, just a few feet from the

path along the canal. We sat on the flat rock and Stuart pulled out the three firecrackers from his pants pocket. The sacred moment was here. As we prepared to take a leaping run down the path, Stuart lit one of the firecrackers and we ran with a speed that may very well had shamed the Flash. From a few yards away, we waited and waited and waited. Finally, we decided to check on what had happened. When we reached the big flat rock, we saw that the fuse had burnt and so did the paper that the firecracker was wrapped in. Something was wrong. Could it be that Lenny conned us? After a few moments of discussing the matter, Stuart and I agree to check out one of the other two remaining firecrackers. I ripped open the paper wrapping of the firecracker. To our dismay, our hearts sank at what transpired before our very eyes. Lenny had scammed us. The firecrackers he sold us were nothing more than sawdust wrapped in brightly colored paper. Sadly, Stuart and I walked home, along the wooded path that early morning of the Fourth of July of 1964. We both had sacrificed buying comic books that week, only to be cheated by the biggest wise guy in all of Chapel Hill School.

As we reached the end of the wooded path and came upon Mabey Lane, I remember Stuart looking over at me and saying, “we should have known better than to have trusted Lenny Esposito.” I looked over to Stuart and simply replied, “hard lesson to learn.” Legend had it that we weren’t the only kids who bought into Lenny’s firecracker scam. I often wonder whatever happened to Lenny Esposito. I think it was in the middle of my sophomore year at Boonton High School, that Lenny moved away. None of the other kids really missed him at all. A sad commentary, to say the least. By the eighth grade we all came to know that Lenny’s father was never an FBI Agent, he just did odd jobs here and there. As strange as it may sound, I kind of felt sorry for Lenny. I still keep in touch with my old best friend, Stuart. From time to time, in telephone conversations, we’ll recall the time we got scammed by Lenny Esposito. Now, over 50 years later, Lenny’s scam artist legacy is still alive and well. How Parents Can Help Children Build Social Skills

hile adults may joke about needing to relearn how to be around others in a post-pandemic world, children can also benefit from a refresh of certain soft skills – especially young children who may not remember pre-pandemic life. Building on these skills can also help children prepare for a successful return to school. In fact, data from Mintel shows parents’ top learning priorities for their children prior to entering grade school are how to play well with others (67%) and good manners (66%). “Summertime is a great time for families to help their children focus on social skills that may not have gotten much attention this past year, particularly if families were social distancing or in quarantine,” said Taunya Banta, inclusion services manager for KinderCare Learning Centers. “Parents can set their children up for success when school starts again in the fall by helping them work on these soft skills in relaxed settings like family gatherings and on the neighborhood playground.” Consider these ways parents can help their children build social skills. Name emotions: Naming emotions is an important part of learning how to regulate them. If your children don’t understand

what emotions they’re experiencing, they may be confused or upset by how they feel and that could amplify the feelings and make it more difficult to regulate the emotions. Talk with your children about your own feelings, or the feelings of characters in books, to help them learn to identify emotions and appropriate ways to address those feelings. For example, “I’m sad, but I know a hug will help me feel better,” or “I’m mad and that’s OK. It’s not OK to hit, but I can punch a pillow or stomp my feet to get the feelings out of my body.” As a family, try practicing some simple emotion regulation strategies like deep breathing. To help younger children breathe deep, hold up two fingers and ask them to smell the flower as they inhale (one finger) and blow out the candle as they exhale (the other). Play with other children: Play gives children an opportunity to freely express their emotions and thoughts, work out feelings and explore relationships in a safe, lighthearted way. If you feel comfortable and can follow health and safety guidelines, visit a playground or set up play dates with other children of similar ages then take a step back to let the children play together. If your children aren’t ready to play with others, allow them to stay close to you until they feel

ready to join the other children. Once the children are playing together, observe their interactions and talk with your children (in the moment or later) about how they felt. If they had fun, ask what they enjoyed. If disagreements or awkward moments came up, help your children problem-solve ways they could address those situations next time. “Most importantly, remember children of all ages have an incredible capacity for

resiliency,” Banta said. “Just knowing they have a steady base to return to, a safe place where they’re loved and appreciated for who they are, can give children the courage they need to face the challenge of a new or uncertain social situation with selfconfidence and courage.” For more tips to help your children build or improve their social skills, visit kindercare. com. f you’ve never traveled along the Pacific Coast, or maybe you’d just like to experience it from a new perspective, there are few things quite like a road trip to take in the sights and experiences that make the journey one to remember. A road trip lets you set your own pace and enjoy the companionship of friends or family. When you’re ready to explore, outdoor adventures, historical experiences and 99 miles of coastline await in Monterey County, California, which is known as a scenic, beautiful expanse along the Pacific Coast. From wide-open beaches, verdant vineyards and fields to the peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountains, there’s plenty of room to roam. Scenic Beauty Some of the top scenic drives in the world are along California’s coast, where you’ll find a wide range of local topography. One example is Highway 1, where starting toward the north, you’ll see the state’s second largest wetlands, artichoke fields and rolling sand dunes, as well as cypress forests and the craggy coastline. Further south, you’ll encounter towering cliffs, redwoods and awe-inspiring bridges. Other notable sights include fishing ports; beaches; wildlife including seals, sea lions and sea otters; the famed Lone Cypress; mansions; and several championship golf

courses. Outdoor Adventure When you’re ready for some action, there’s plenty to find along the coast. From a captivating 18-mile long recreation trail with coastline views to kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, whale-watching excursions and more, there are numerous ways to whet an appetite for adventure near the ocean. Inland, you’ll find options like hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, cave exploring and horseback riding. Wine Country Along the California coast, you can find tens of thousands of acres of vineyards producing more than 53 different varietals of wine. In Monterey County alone, you can take your pick among 65 tasting rooms set against picturesque backdrops. How you choose to experience wine country is as diverse as the varietals you’ll discover. For example, you might head to the beach with a newly purchased bottle of your favorite wine, jump aboard a wine trolley to let someone else do the driving for a while or schedule a tour that takes you behind the scenes with a winemaker. Beach Time No visit to the coast is complete without a visit to the beach, but not all beaches are the same. From white sandy beaches to rocky cliffs, you could plan an entire road

trip around the different kinds of beaches waiting for you to discover their beauty. Enjoy bird spotting, rock collecting, surfing, tide pooling and more. Some of the area’s greatest treasures are the lesser-known beaches, including one that sits in the middle of Cannery Row. The sheltered cove of McAbee Beach was used by Portuguese whalers in the 1850s and Chinese fishermen in the early 1900s. Today, this secret beach is a perfect spot to let kids burn off energy before or after a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Visitors can spot seals and otters playing offshore, and it’s a popular launching point for scuba divers exploring the kelp forests. Wellness for Body and Mind

When you’ve taken in the sights and explored to your heart’s content, be sure to leave time for rejuvenation. From spas and meditation retreats to spending time in nature, it’s easy to make wellness a priority when visiting the California coast. You can even enjoy food that’s as good for you as it is delicious with a growing focus on sustainability by visiting daily farmers’ markets and fish markets, which provide a bounty of locally sourced produce, fresh meat, seafood and hand-made treasures for a truly enriching cultural experience. Start planning your Pacific Coast road trip adventure at SeeMonterey.com. (Family Features)

Realty Executives Exceptional Realtors Celebrates 20th Anniversary

oming together in 2001, Broker/Owners Doug Radford and Kyle Poskitt opened an independent real estate brokerage with the goal of building a company with the finest Realtors® in the industry. Unlike other brokerages, Realty Executives Exceptional Realtors® recognized that Realtors®spend far too much time doing non real estate activities. So they developed a support center to provide the highest high level of marketing, technology and administrative support for their Realtor® team. This has allowed their Associates to excel, by focusing their time on what they do best; working hard with buyer and seller clients, spending more time with their families and giving back to the communities they serve. Over the last 20 years, the agents at Realty Executives Exceptional Realtors® have been able to differentiate themselves with their market knowledge, professionalism and passion for helping their clients. In 2009, Radford and Poskitt decided to affiliate their company with Realty Executives

International, a like-minded, international real estate franchise that understood their vision and offered additional tools and further support for their agents. Since affiliating, the brokerage has experienced phenomenal growth and success through recruiting and expansion initiatives. They strategically invested heavily during the recession years, which allowed them to open offices and build the foundation for where the company is today. “Our company was founded on the premise that if the company focuses its efforts on providing Realtors® the best real estate services, our Realtors® could spend their time catering to the needs of their clients, and the growth and development of their business,” Poskitt said. “Today, we remain true to our founding. We have expanded our support services with the growth of the company, and are proud of our 20 year track record of assisting top real estate professionals exceed client expectations while surpassing their own personal, business and financial goals.” continued on page 30

Realty Executives Celebrates... continued from page 28 In addition to branding the brokerage as Realty Executives, the business partners took on the responsibility of building the real estate brand in their region. As Regional Developers, Radford and Poskitt have played an instrumental role in growing the Realty Executives name and reputation in untapped markets. Today the brand consists of 18 offices throughout the region, 400 agents, is approaching $1 billion in sales and closed approximately 3,000 transactions in 2020. “Doug and Kyle continue to be assets to our brand and have not only become great business partners, but great leaders and friends,” Patrick van den Bossche, President of Realty Executives International, said. “Their vision of putting the agent first is exactly what we look for in our franchisees and we couldn’t be happier to be celebrating this outstanding anniversary with them and the entire Exceptional Realtors® team.” “Our company has built its reputation as a result of the extraordinary Realtors® that are affiliated with our company. Our belief is that it’s not a company that makes its Realtors® great, it’s the Realtors® that make a company great,” Radford said.

“We feel the company’s role is to provide the absolute best support to our agents to allow them to thrive and build their individual brand. If our agents’ businesses grow, our business will as well.” The brokerage has consistently been recognized as one of the top real estate companies nationally by research companies including REAL Trends, RISMedia and T3 Sixty. In 2019, the firm was awarded Realty Executives’ Realty Excellence Award for Extraordinary Brokerage. The award is issued to one brokerage each year for year over year growth, adoption of technology, engagement, and for being an excellent representation of the brand. “Realty Executives has often been considered a “destination company” as it attracts the best, most experienced, producing agents who are looking to remain with the brokerage for the entirety of their real estate career,” Radford stated. “We are grateful to support some of the most forward-thinking, positive minded, and entrepreneurial Realtors® who dominate their local markets”.
