he new Gregory School bus lane, bus drop-off, and pick up lane, was complete just as the new school year began. The newly-installed driveway for buses only is located in front of the school. Buses will enter and exit the driveway heading north on Gregory Avenue. The former bus drop, located on Lowell Avenue, has become the Kiss and Go lane for morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups. Gregory School parents received an instruction letter in their welcome packets, which outlined the Kiss and Go procedure. In addition to the new driveway, the retaining wall on the right side of the exit, onto Walker Road, had been replaced. And the parking lot was renovated and repaved. It now provides 18 new spaces. The project cost $364,862 and was funded by the Township of West Orange. The project contract was awarded to JTG Construction on June 14. According to Superintendent of West Orange Schools Jeff Rutzky, one month into the new school year, it’s working very well. Prior to the new lane, busses had to pass in front
of the school on Gregory Avenue twice – once going in to drop off the kids on Lowell and once more leaving. With the new plan, a bus only crosses in front of Gregory once. Also, the new plan helps to alleviate traffic problems and increases security. “We used to have the front of the school, Gregory Avenue and Lowell Avenue in the back,” Rutzky said. “The buses and where the parents dropped kids off were on the same street. We had some opportunities where kids would be crossing over Lowell Avenue to get on the school property. For years, many parents have complained to schools,
to the mayor, to police. We were looking at this and trying to make it safer for students and parents and community members.” Continuing, Rutzky said, “The Town Council approved that we would have changes to change the Kiss and Go by building a buscut in the front of the school. Parents are able to be up on Lowell Avenue, we have a nice long Kiss and Go, and let kids get out as they pull up to the side of the curb. It’s so much more safe now and more smooth. We’re able to really separate the buses and cars.” Gregory School is the only school that had a new bus lane put in because it
was the only one that had a problem. Rutzky said, “All schools are unique. We have seven elementary schools; two do not have busing – the entire school population are walkers since they live so close to school. Others have a nice, safe plan. They don’t have buses and cars intermingling.” The project was officially approved by the West Orange Planning Board last June. The project took about eight weeks to complete, starting in early July and ending in August. Rutzky said, “We finished in time to have school open with it in place.”

West Orange Police Department Donates Bicycles To Charity

he West Orange Police Department donated more than 40 bicycles that were approved for destruction to “Adopt One Village.” The founder of the charity is a local mailman from West Orange, Emmanuel Anim-Sackey, better known as Baba. According to the Adopt One Village website, Baba began aiding his village in Abetifi-Kwahu, Ghana, in 2006, when he started collecting donations of toiletries, clothing, sports equipment and other goods as he went along his mail route. He’d then bring those items home to the children and elders of his village, organizing a mimimum of two trips per year with the help of many dedicated volunteers. Baba had left his impoverished village in Ghana to build a better life for himself in 1996. When he left, he vowed to someday return and share his good fortune with his small village. In 2008 he was awarded Citizen of the Year in West Orange, and in 2009 National Humanitarian of the Year by National Association of Letter Carriers.

In collaboration with a local West Orange church, the West Orange Police Department, Siemens and a number of private donations, bikes were provided to those in the village who needed transportation to neighboring villages for school or to gain employment; as well as to teachers from neighboring villages to begin working in Abetifi-Kwahu. The bikes “belong” to Adopt One Village and are on loan so that they cannot be sold or bartered for other items, as is the custom in many cases. West Orange Police Sgt. Dennis McCole said, “A lot of people in the community know him [Baba] and his charity. They let us know about him. We thought it would be a good way to make sure something good is happening with the bikes.” The bikes are found property or held for safe keeping, not evidence. They have various circumstances. McCole said, “Sometimes someone we’ve arrested is on a bicycle. They don’t come back for it. The bike itself may be
stolen. In many instances we can’t find the owner. We only have a certain amount of space to store. We continually have to clear out. We’ve exhausted all other measures. We’ll call Emmanuel. Within a day or two here’s here for Adopt a Village.” The children of Ghana are given bikes with the intent of education. McCole said, “It looks like a lot of these kids will go to school in order to get a bike. They are rewarded with a bike. It sounds like a very positive thing.” This is the third time the West Orange
Police Department has donated bikes, which aren’t in the best of condition. McCole said, “A lot of these bikes are close to being garbage. Most have flat tires and broken chains. He’s got somebody who volunteers to fix bikes and get new tires and get them in good working conditions and safe.” Adopt One Village focuses on four areas: education, health care, infrastructure, and quality of life. Tips To Handle School Anxiety And Refusal
hile it is developmentally normal for younger children to be anxious about school, this normal anxiety typically resolves quickly as the child adjusts. Most parents are able to provide the support needed to help their children overcome their initial anxiety. However, when anxiety about school causes a child significant distress intervention is often needed. This is particularly true for adolescents, who, from a developmental perspective, should have resolved normal fears about school. Working with school anxiety and refusal can be very challenging. Children and teenagers can, in more extreme instances, be very resistant to going to school. It may be difficult, even impossible, initially, to engage some children and adolescents in therapy and establish that the goal of therapy is to return to school. In these instances, more family focused treatment may be necessary, with the emphasis on how parents can more effectively respond to their defiant and anxious child. Family work is essential, even the best intentioned parents can inadvertently respond, out of their own frustration or anxiety, in ways that intensify and exacerbate problems, such as the frustrated parent who yells at the anxious child, or the anxious parent who does too much reassuring rather than pushing their child to work to reassure themselves. Moreover, most children and adolescents need parental support to help them overcome their anxiety. Finally, if there are significant family concerns, or if the child is struggling with more significant emotional involvement, family involvement is critical. When significant parental conflicts are present, it is
incumbent on the therapist to identify and attempt to address these issues. When a child or teenager is struggling with major depression or other serious psychological problems, parents need to understand their child’s needs and how to best respond to them. How to Spot Signs of Anxiety Sometimes anxiety doesn’t look like anxiety at all. Symptoms of serious stress can be both behavioral and physical. In little kids, panic often erupts into tantrums. Older kids may act out, using aggressiveness as a way to cover up a fear of being judged by classmates. Physical symptoms can include restlessness, fatigue, back pain, sweating, and — most commonly — head- and stomachaches. When to Go to the Pros If anxiety prevents kids from going to school and making friends, it’s time to see an expert. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which replaces negative thoughts with targeted coping strategies, is typically the first line of treatment. But when a child is so anxious she can’t focus on the therapy, clinicians may also turn to medication. Anxious Behavior: What's Normal and What's Not It’s perfectly okay when kids worry about an upcoming test, want to be tucked in at night, hang back for the first halfhour of a party, keep an eye out for bees or dogs. It’s a red flag when they vomit, lose sleep, or cry from stress, wind up in your bed every night, refuse to go to parties or leave your side, need to be coaxed outside because they’re afraid of being stung or attacked.
Anxiety Soothers to Try Now 1. Have the child tense and relax each muscle group, working up from the toes. This releases tension, and when the body relaxes, the brain does, too. 2. Tell the child to pay attention to the noises around him until he hears five different sounds. Focusing his thoughts helps the child stay in the moment rather than worry about the future. 3. Grade-schoolers can write down, or dictate, their fears and stash them in a shoebox. Writing worries helps minimize them and gives kids permission to let ’em go. 4. Tell the child to remember a time he faced a scary situation and overcame it or learned something hard. Picturing a previous success makes anyone feel more confident. 5. Tell the child to pretend holding a slice of pizza, inhale the aroma by breathing in deeply through the nose and cool the pizza by blowing out through the mouth. Focused breathing sends the brain a message that it’s time to relax. 6. Download some anti-anxiety apps. Try the Meditation Jar, iTunes, free. Set the timer, shake the phone, and watch the particles settle. This app gives kids something to gaze at as they quiet down, or breathe. WOHS Wind Ensemble Earns National Recognition
By Kristina Ailara he West Orange High School Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform at the Music for All National Festival which takes place March 9 – 11, 2017 at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. Under the direction of their teacher, Lewis Kelly, this outstanding group of 50 10th to 12th grade musicians is one of 16 featured bands from across the United States that have been given this honor. Kelly says, “We are a featured band, of which nationally, there is really no higher accomplishment of this kind.” To qualify for the festival, bands are required to submit a detailed application which Kelly explains includes “two recent recordings of the group, two recommenda-

tions from well-known music educators and a list of recent accomplishments.” According to Music for All, applicants are evaluated by leading music educators and the “ensembles [chosen to] perform at the Festival are recognized as being among the finest in the nation.” As the largest national festival for high school bands, Music for All encourages “innovation, growth and excellence” by offering students and teachers a comprehensive musical experience. Kelly says, “There will be opportunities for us to perform, watch other groups perform; we’ll be involved in workshops and the kids will also be participating in master classes for their specific instrument.”

for All is a non-profit organization that says it strives to “provide national programs that recognize and support music students’ performance and success, offer music educator training and professional development and deliver tools and resources to participants and their communities that will assist them in supporting music education by promoting awareness of music’s impact on student growth and achievement.” This is an extraordinary opportunity for the wind ensemble. Kelly says, the students “are excited. I also think some of them are a bit intimidated about the whole thing. It’s important for them to remember, all of the other groups participating are high school students that are in very similar situations.” To pay for the trip, students will be using funds from the Music Boosters, the West Orange Board of Education and the students. At the festival, the wind ensemble will perform a concert before an audience that includes the festival evaluation panel. Although music selections have yet to be finalized, Kelly says the wind ensemble will perform “40 - 45 minutes of music that will best showcase our band.” The group will then receive a private clinic with one of the festival evaluators/clinicians. Students will also participate in instrumental master classes, led by top applied faculty professional musicians. Students are required to watch other bands perform and the festival will also offer social events and an awards banquet so that participating bands can get to know each other. Music for All says it strives to create an atmosphere that “provides a place for growth, cooperative encouragement and mutual respect among music programs, students, parents boosters and administrators.” For more than 40 years, Music for All has been one of the nation’s largest and most influential organizations in support of music education and performance. NCJW Features Journalist At Opening Event
he National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section (NCJW/Essex) announces its 2016 Opening Event featuring award winning journalist Dahlia Lithwick, a contributing editor at “Newsweek” and senior editor at “Slate.” The NCJW/Essex Opening Event is set to take place on Thur., Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m., at Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park. Lithwick writes the “Supreme Court Dispatches” and “Jurisprudence” columns for “Slate” and functions as a legal correspondent, often providing summaries of and commentary on current U.S. Supreme Court cases. Her work related to the Affordable Care Act won her a 2013 National Magazine Award and she has twice been recognized with Online Journalism Awards for her legal commentary. Additionally, she was the first online journalist invited to be on the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Registration is required for the Opening Event which is open to the public and is free of charge to NCJW/Essex members and $20 for nonmembers. he Dapper Dans of Harmony is a men’s a cappella chorus based in West Caldwell. Originally chartered as the Montclair Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, the chapter has been singing and entertaining audiences in New Jersey and around the nation for more than 60 years. Although the Dapper Dans sing predominantly four part harmony in the Barbershop style, its repertoire also includes many modern songs arranged in four part harmony. The chorus normally does two formal shows each year but can be found singing in the local area throughout the year as

part of their community outreach. This summer, the Dans have sung in Verona Park, at Yogi Berra Stadium, at the Grover Cleveland birthplace on National Night Out; at two Sept.11 memorial services in Caldwell and most recently, at the Kessler Foundation Stroll and Roll in Verona Park. It will be featured artists at the Caldwell Street Fair in October. The chapter is very active in the Youth in Harmony movement which encourages young people to become involved in choral music and have sponsored a youth chorus to the Barbershop Harmony Society's Youth Chorus Festival. It provides scholarships to several local high
schools, aid in Harmony Explosion camps and offer free singing lessons to any man who wants to learn to sing better through the

Here are some ways to weed out the qualified and professional pet sitters from those who might not be the best fit. • Ask for recommendations. Seek advice from friends or family members who have used pet sitters in the past. If that does not prove fruitful, speak with your veterinarian. He or she may have a relationship with an animal boarder or a pet-sitting service. Some veterinarians also have employees on staff who provide this kind of service, and such situations can be especially beneficial for owners of older or special-needs pets. An alternative to personal and professional recommendations is to employ a certified pet sit-

It can be beneficial to find a sitter whose energy levels and temperament are a good match with your pet. A young, boisterous puppy may not be a good match for an older sitter.
