Come Enjoy Small Town Delights Of Wayne Day

By Dawn M Chiossi mall towns and cities; each has its charms. And living in this area of New Jersey, people are lucky to experience both. Lucky enough to be close to New York when cravings of the city hit, but lucky enough to enjoy the small town dynamics of the suburbs. And so it is with Wayne Day set for Sun., June 11, rain or shine from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The celebration will take place on the fields behind Wayne Valley High School and the Municipal Building in Wayne. Wayne Day 2017 is an annual small town festival

where township residents can get together to have some fun. In this constant crazy-busy world it is often a rare thing to notice the goings on let alone chat with others. So Wayne Day is ideal. Wayne Day was created specifically for residents to gather and learn more about their community and the things it has to offer. This is a great family-friendly venue to do just that! This is Wayne’s 25th year celebrating Wayne Day. Joe Balzarotti, Wayne Day Committee president and member of the Lion’s Club, who has been with

Looking back the past 25 years, Wayne Day has grown quite a bit. Last year, Wayne Day has had attendees upward to 10,000 people and Balzarotti hopes that this year they will have even more. Balzarotti is proud of his

participation and years in Wayne Day. He credits so many for their support and hard work to make Wayne Day a success. These include Mayor Chris Vergano, the township, council, board of education, recreation department and police depart-

ment. He thoroughly praises his fellow Wayne Day Board of Directors and officers for their tireless diligence and hard work: Joe Graziano, secretary/treasurer; Russ Schubert, director continued on page 2

Have Fun, Be Healthy, Give Back, With Wayne 5K Color Walk/Run Fundraiser

By Dawn M. Chiossi xercise. It is often called nature’s medicine. Everyone knows that exercise is healthy, and creates a myriad health benefits for the body and mind. Getting the body moving decreases stress and blood pressure, keeps weight in check, and so much more. Exercise strengthens the heart and releases endorphins in the body. Endorphins, those feel good chemicals to make exercise fun. Gone is the image of arduous exercise, of someone running, sweating profusely, ready to drop. Gone is the idea of someone tediously ticking off time on a clock, waiting impatiently for exercise to end. There’s so much out there now that combines fun with running or walking, folks will never think of exercise in that negative way ever again. Take 5K color walks/ runs for example. This is not just an ordinary 5K run. This is a guaranteed

smile and good time! Color walks/runs were founded in 2011 as a great way to engage all of the senses and get them all involved in exercise. Simply put, this is an enjoyable, interactive event where runners/walkers feel like they are involved in a visual party instead of enduring a dreaded chore. The idea of the color walk/run is that participants wear white at the starting line. During the race, there are five stations where participants will be squirted with different colors. When they finish, they end up getting plastered in color! No need to worry, it’s just easily washable colored cornstarch. There is no time limit for the race, and can be great for everyone regardless of activity level. As such, the walk/run is not a serious task. It’s all about moving, having fun and raising money. Join in this year’s 5K Color Run/Walk Fundraiser in Wayne. This fundraiser is the

brainchild of Wayne High School Sophomore, Erica Radler. This is her third annual 5K color walk/run fundraiser in Wayne. Radler becamse involved in the 5K fundraiser through an activity in Girl Scouts. She wanted to do something special to earn her Silver Award. Others even commented on how much she was doing, remarking that she didn’t have to do so much, but Radler took it all in stride. For her it was a matter of “go big, or go home.” She says that originally, three years ago, she made a connection with SUTA— Student Youth Travel Association. In her first year of doing the 5K walk/runs, they raised enough money to help kids at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, a school she fundraises for every year, to get them supplies and things they needed. Her second year doing the fundraiser, she just gave the money to SUTA to do with what they saw fit for the kids. Radler says her objec-

tive this year is to create a digital workout lab for the Passiac Country Elementary School and summer program where the children can enjoy the benefits of activity as well as technology and gaming. With this digital workout lab, they can move and exercise on floor pads while their images appear on the screen. According to Radler, this digital lab is inspired by the one in Philadelphia, so she hopes that people will give generously. She asserts that the digital lab, “will help everyone, not just the students,” and create a multitude of benefits for all in the community. Right away Radler was

hooked, passionate about giving back. “I loved it, it made me so happy,” she says. “It’s a win-win situation.” Color Walk/Runs have been called “The Happiest 5K on the Planet,” and with this event, people can see for themselves why. Less about running or walk-

ing, it’s a guaranteed good time, and most especially for Radler. She express that her favorite part of the 5K walk/runs, is before the race begins just to see “it all coming together.” And it is definitely a case of hard work realized when she tells of a story continued on page 5

Wayne 5K Color Walk/Run... continued from page 4 when her father had set up a ladder before past races. Radler just got up on it to watch everyone before the race began. Radler’s extremely proud of her efforts when she sees the rewards of the fundraiser at the end, when the children benefit. She nearly beams when she recalls one year when she was invited along with the children to the city to see the musical “The Lion King.” “It was great,” she enthuses. “Talking with the kids, seeing how they interacted with each other.” Fundraising definitely seems to be in Radler’s blood. She may even go so far as to combine her pas-

sion for business non-profit interests, with her science/math aspirations in the future. “If there’s a way,” Radler asserts, “I’ll definitely do it.” Come to the 5K color walk/run fundraiser in Wayne to have fun and give back on Sun., May 7, raindate of May 14. The route for the 5K will be slated to take place at Alps Village, the low traffic roads between Church Lane and Alps Rd. Easy Ways To Keep Your Dog’s Ears Healthy

any dog owners never give a second thought to the health of their dogs’ ears. Unless Fido isn’t answering the dinner bell, pet owners may fail to recognize signs that man’s best friend is dealing with ear trouble. Though it’s easily overlooked, maintaining a dog’s ears is something owners must do throughout their four-legged friend’s life. Such maintenance is simple, and owners who remember to make it a part of their dog’s grooming routine can help ensure their

dog stays clean and healthy for years to come. Why must I prioritize ear maintenance for my dog? The anatomy of dogs’ ears is reason enough for

dog owners to make ear maintenance part of the grooming routine they have for their pets. The inner ears of dogs are curvy and provide many spots for bacteria, parasites and yeast to hide and grow. The winding nature of dogs’ inner ears also can make it difficult to expel any debris that enters the ear canal, and trapped debris can cause infection. What are some signs that suggest my dog’s ears aren’t up to snuff? Much like their owners, dogs may suffer from wax buildup in their ears. But unlike humans, dogs

who have wax buildup in their ears may be coping with microscopic ear mites, which can infect dogs’ inner and external ear canals and lead to infection if left untreated. Ear mites can be difficult to see, but the presence of a black or brown waxy secretion may be indicative of ear mites. Dogs with ear mites may also rub or scratch their ears excessively, and that behavior can lead to ruptured blood vessels within the dog’s ear flap, which will look swollen and cause the dog considerable pain.

591 Newark Pompton Turnpike Pompton Plains, NJ

Other signs that dogs may be having problems with their ears include redness in and around the ear, swelling, crusty skin, and hair loss. Any of the aforementioned symptoms should be brought to the attention of a veterinarian immediately. How can I protect my dog from ear troubles? Simple and routine maintenance is often enough to safeguard dogs from ear troubles. Apply a cotton ball dampened with hydrogen peroxide or mineral oil to dirty areas of dogs’ inner ears. The skin

inside dogs’ inner ears is delicate, so be gentle when cleaning such areas, even asking your veterinarian to show you the proper technique if you are concerned you might hurt the animal. Some dogs, not unlike some dog owners, may grow hair in their ears. While the hair is relatively harmless, it’s still a good idea to discuss its growth with your veterinarian, who can teach you how to remove the hair or even let continued on next page

Wayne Lights Up Blue For Autism

his April, for the second consecutive year, Mayor Christopher Vergano and Wayne Township will be participating in the global “Light It Up Blue” campaign, created by Autism Speaks. The Municipal Building will be illuminated with blue lights throughout the month of April to help raise awareness and shine a bright light on autism in support of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 and Autism Awareness Month. Autism is the term used

for a group of brain development disorders, characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest statistics show that one in 68 U.S. children have autism. Although the “Light It Up Blue” campaign highlights the color blue, the actual colors associated with autism are red, yellow and blue which are displayed as various puzzle pieces. The different colors and shapes

represent the diversity of the people and families living with this disorder. Every individual suffering with Autism is like the unique pieces of a puzzle which reflects the complexity of this disorder. “I am hopeful that through increased awareness and advanced treatment, people dealing with autism can live full and productive lives and I encourage all of our residents to participate in this important campaign,” said Vergano.

Dog’s Ears Healthy... cont. from previous page

you know if the hair needs to be removed at all. It’s important that dog owners do not clean their dog’s ears too often. The skin inside dogs’ ears is very sensitive, so over cleaning the ears can cause irritation. When cleaning dogs’ ears, dog owners should never insert anything inside their dogs’ ear canals. Dog owners who let their dogs go swimming

from time to time should dry the dogs’ ears immediately after they get out of the water. Make sure ears are as dry as possible before letting Fido run off, as wet ears can cause infection and irritation. Ears may not be the first thing dog owners think of when trying to protect their pets from potentially painful health problems. But ear maintenance should be a part of every dog owner’s dog-grooming routine.

Common Audit Red Flags - What Attracts The IRS

F

or handwritten taxpayers, preparing their tax return isn’t the problem. It’s the fear of an audit. Audits are fairly uncommon, but the IRS may notice your tax return if certain red flags are present. Here are some of the common audit red flags to help you prepare for the possibility of your return being reviewed. High-income earners. In 2015, 0.8 percent of all individual tax returns were

L

audited, but among taxpayers with income of $1 million to $5 million, the audit rate jumped to 8.42 percent. Taxpayers with income of $10 million or more have about a onein-three chance of hearing from a tax auditor. Making or receiving alimony payments. Alimony payments are taxable income to the recipient and deductible by the payer, but divorced spouses sometimes fail to use the same

numbers. For that reason, the IRS matches deductions taken by the payer to income reported by the recipient. Differences could mean one or both of the spouses are selected for an audit. Having an undisclosed foreign bank account. Taxpayers with balances in foreign accounts that total more than $10,000 during the year must file FinCEN Form 114, commonly referred to as an FBAR. In-

Walk To Cure Lupus

upus, an autoimmune disorder, affects 1.5 million people in the U.S. That is one in every 200 people,

and 16,000 people are diagnosed annually. To help combat the disease there is going to be a 2017 Walk With Us to Cure Lupus

ternational banks are now required to report U.S. account holdings to the IRS, so failure to file an FBAR could result in severe penalties and possibly an audit. Claiming big deductions. The IRS tracks statistical data, such as average charitable contributions at every income level and average amounts of other common deductions. Taxpayers who claim above-average deductions might be asked to provide receipts to substantiate those amounts. Business or hobby. If you have a Schedule C in your tax return and it shows a loss, be prepared for a review. The IRS knows many

“businesses” are actually hobbies because they lack a profit motive. Be prepared if this describes one of your business activities. If you fall into one of these red flag categories, you can prepare for a potential audit by maintaining proper documentation. If the IRS contacts you about an audit, don’t panic. FINANCIAL News! T

What Is The Perfect Investment For My Retirement Portfolio?

his is a question I hear all the time. “Mark, cut to the chase and tell me what you would do with this portfolio if it were your money”. This question, also heard by me all the time, reminds me of a question my wife once asked my surgeon after my quintuple bypass in 2010, that she put in charge of my case over all the other 168 doctors that weren’t effectively communicating amongst themselves to get me well after I was in pretty bad shape and barely alive. She said this: “Doc, if that were your wife dying over there, and you were compelled to save her and have her return to health, what would you immediately do to rescue her from danger and restore her to health?” I was “that close” to the end, readers and no one, in my wife Terry’s mind was caring, concerned or motivated enough to save her dying husband. She was told over and over, “buy the box – he’s not going to make it!” She realized I had but one chance, one shred of hope, if properly managed, to regain consciousness and survive that horrific ordeal. If missed, she would be returning home alone. Fortunately, her quick thinking and “take charge” attitude saved my life, her hus-

band, best friend and the father of her 4 children. Let’s compare this true story to that of your personal financial situation by asking you a simple question, “How many opportunities do you have for a secure retirement?” You work your entire life to accumulate a nest egg and in one day your working income is severed! Whether from an accident, a choice made by you or a choice made by others; on that day you will become dependent on the PAST fruits of your labor and the percentage of it you directed to your very own financial future and the rate of return it received! Your life and lifestyle will be dictated in direct proportion to: First, the amount of savings and investments you’ve scoured away for this day and second, the decisions regarding the positioning of your portfolio to produce a sustainable (hopefully guaranteed*) joint lifetime income with principal access, coupled with a legacy plan for your children. It’s just that simple. Make a poor decision or two and your income and resulting lifestyle may be skewered forever. Therefore, to answer my own question, “How many opportunities do you have for a secure

retirement?” For most of us, the answer is just ONE! Coupled with Social Security and perhaps a pension, your portfolio is basically your only alternative source for an income stream that in my opinion, should not be taken for granted. Quite the contrary; it may be the most critical, vitally important financial decision you’ll ever make. Think of your portfolio as your “spouse” for a moment and you desire her company and involvement in your life for as long as you live. She can’t die, be compromised and must be safely protected from all kinds of risk. What would you do differently, how would you position her assets, what would be your risk tolerance, your dependency level on her performance and frequency of use? I strive for principal, portfolio and income protection with guarantees* to last the rest of your and

your spouse’s lifetime. There is no one perfect investment for your retirement portfolio, but there may be a perfect plan for your retirement. Part of that plan would include the opportunity for liquidity, tax advantages, death benefits, income for life, offer the potential for growth, asset protection from law suits, the incredible financial burden of a long-term care stay with the addition of legal documents providing guidance and leadership during periods of incapacitation, sickness and/ or death. My personal plan back in 2010, included these legal documents naming my wife to be in charge of my health, my daughter as successor and my sister as contingent successor; they were given control of my financial affairs too. In my opinion, financial management is only one aspect of a properly structured retirement program, it must

contain a legal plan of action as well, in addition to a properly funded legacy plan. Fortunately, my legacy plan, though ready, did not need to go into effect back in 2010; I hope not to test those waters for many decades yet to come, but it is spring loaded and ready to jump into action. Are you equally prepared? Is your legacy plan set, your retirement plan loaded to produce indefinite sustainable income? Are you protected from the costs of a health trial, a long-term care incident, a lawsuit, either you or your spouse living too long or dying too soon? And what about inflation compromising your purchasing power over your retirement, are you prepared for that too? I encourage you to sit down with your financial professional/advisor to put these items on the very front burner. If you don’t have a relationship with a qualified advisor, please check me out online and in person. Call for a no obligation appointment to experience a high level of concern, caring and competence from a 35 year veteran of this industry and located in your back yard. I challenge you to challenge me to create a financial plan as unique as you are. Come to our educational workshops

and bring your spouse and a friend. Our Social Security educational workshops are being held April 18th and the 20th 6:30 – 8:00pm. Please call our office for details, reserve your seats and free admission tickets. April Begins Garage Story Sunday Talks At Thomas Edison’s Glenmont Estate

S

by Michele Guttenberger pecial ranger-led talks of Thomas Edison’s Glenmont garage begin every Sunday, every two weeks, through June 25. If wondering if Thomas Edison saw the future in electric cars, questions will be quickly answered with a visit to this famous West Orange inventor’s personal garage. Many Tesla car aficionados make the pilgrimage to the first electric charging station garage. Al’s Garage, his childhood nickname, is the steampunk time capsule of the electric car’s future for American suburban living. It is story telling of interesting developments conceived in this garage that journeys from car bat-

teries to Edison’s poured concrete dream homes. Like many successful businessmen, Edison’s own domestic domain was his garage. He built it in 1908. It was a fixture that he designed and he oversaw the construction himself. Edison’s garage was his own unique creation, because it was the prototype for his new cement construction venture. This home project helped him master the technique of constructing mass-produced, poured-cement houses using iron molds. His garage and the original Yankee stadium came from the same cement poured by his own Edison Portland Cement. Today’s news is about battery operated cars and

providing a charging station for them. Edison already had this technology over some 100 years ago, in his own garage. He owned electric cars that used Edison batteries. Edison invented the alkaline storage battery in 1901 and spent years perfecting it for use in automobiles. The garage was the place to service these cars. Edison also had a gasoline filling pump in his garage for his 1922 Model T Ford – a gift from his good friend Henry Ford. The most interesting feature of Edison’s garage is the turntable to help park these vehicles. A car could rest on the concrete turntable and a hand crank rotated it to a desired parking

position. The driver never had to struggle backing the car into a spot, the turntable did the navigating. Few residential garages today can boast having this feature. Spend a Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.,

or 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. learning about Thomas Edison’s poured concrete garage. There is no additional cost to visit the garage apart from the regular NPS entrance fee. To view the awesome collection of Edison’s electric and gas powered

cars a Car Pass is required. They are obtained at the Edison Factory Lab visiting center in West Orange. Visit website for more calendar info at http://www. nps.gov/edis/index.htm or call 973-736-0550 x11 for visiting information.

NCJW Hosts Author Of A Holocaust Survivor’s Story Of Survival

be Peck is the only living Holocaust survivor of an entire town in Poland. He is the only person left in this world who can provide a firsthand account of the atrocities committed by the Nazis against his family, friends and contemporaries. Maya Ross, the author of “Abe-vs-Adolf: The True Story of Holocaust Survivor Abe Peck,” will recount his astonishing story of survival at the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), West Morris Section’s Personal Giving Thank-You Brunch on Sun., April 30, beginning at 10 a.m., at a private home in Denville. The event is open to everyone who makes a do-

nation to the NCJW, West Morris Section’s Personal Giving campaign. Donations may be made by contacting Dorothy Cohen at dorothy_irvingcohen@ msn.com. Personal Giving is coordinated by Dorothy Cohen of Denville and Anne Gorman of Rockaway. Before Nazi Germany targeted European Jews for persecution and then ultimately annihilation in its insidious plan called the Final Solution of the Jewish Question, Peck had a wonderful childhood. But in March 1940, at only 15 years old, Peck was snatched from his home and family and forced to spend the next five unimaginably horrific years

as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Robbed of his teenage years, with no parents to guide or care for him, Abe somehow survived starvation, disease, beatings, shootings, forced labor, death marches and prolonged imprisonment. If asked how he did it, how he defied death by beating the most abysmal of odds, he will simply say that he was lucky. But was it luck, or was it an indomitable will to live? By detailing his firsthand experience of the horrors of discrimination and genocide, through Ross’s book, he fervently hopes that subsequent generations will learn from the past and vow, “Never again.” Ross is a fiction writer

who met Holocaust survivor Peck while serving on the board of a not-for-profit philanthropic organization. She was so fascinated by his tale of courage and survival that she set out to write his true life story. Her talk at the NCJW, West Morris Section’s Personal Giving Thank-you Brunch promises to be eminently memorable. The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Fun, Festive Ideas to Sweeten Easter Celebrations

S

pring is here, which means it’s time for throwing memorable celebrations for friends and family. Whether you are hosting an Easter brunch or attending a spring picnic, you can make these occasions unforgettable with a few fun and festive additions. Egg Hunt No Easter celebration is complete without an egg decorating station for children and the young at heart. Stock up on a variety of paints, glitter, dye, stencils, and textured fabric, and let imaginations run wild. Plan for your Easter egg hunt to take place outdoors,

but have an indoor back-up in case the weather does not cooperate. Make sure to take all the ages of participants into account when deciding where to hide eggs! Sweet Treats Anyone with a sweet tooth knows that Easter and delicious treats go hand in hand, so pay extra attention to this essential element of your party. A candy buffet invites guests to try an assortment of treats. To satisfy everyone’s taste buds, offer milk and dark chocolates, lollypops, springtime truffles and sour bunnies. Stick with go-to candy makers like See’s Candies, which uses high-quality in-

gredients and is one of the few remaining candy makers that ages its chocolate -- a process that imparts a smoother, mellower flavor and elevates the overall taste experience, making it a great option for Easter entertaining. Spruce Up Take an opportunity to spring clean your home before your gathering. A new season and knowing guests will be coming over can be great motivators for sprucing up your home. For décor, gather flowers to create colorful centerpieces, including tulips and Easter lilies. Use brightly colored tablecloths and run-

ners, scattering confetti and small sweet treats on tables for a special touch. Easter Basket Whether crafting Easter baskets or looking for a gift to take to your host, candy is always a great choice. No matter what your basket or gift budget is, treats can be found in a variety of sizes and price ranges -- from hand-decorated Rocky Road Eggs to chocolate bunnies and Strawberry Cream Lollypops. For more Easter inspiration, visit Sees.com or their Instagram page. With a few sweet twists, you can spring into Easter with flair this year. (StatePoint)

Take yourself one step closer to backyard barbecues, leisurely evenings around the fire pit and generally reveling in all the season has to offer with these tips for updating your outdoor living environment. Make functional repairs. Start with a careful scan of your yard, giving close attention to items that may have sustained damage during months of disuse. Look for cracks in planters and other items. Inspect wooden furniture and accessories for splintering and rough patches. Check the bolts and hardware securing furniture, especially moving pieces like swinging benches or rocking chairs that are prone to loosening over time. Where needed, make repairs, apply fresh stain or paint and generally ensure each item is in good working condition. Turn attention to aesthetics. Once everything is ready functionally, you can turn your attention to appearances. In most cases, a vigorous washing is all you need to bring fresh life to windows, siding, decking, sidewalks and other concrete or stone surfaces. An electric pressure washer can make short work of the

task, and each of Briggs & Stratton’s models offers a variety of maximum pressure and flow rates to fit homeowners’ unique outdoor cleaning needs. These units feature an onboard detergent tank to easily store and dispense cleaning detergents. Some pressure washers offer additional versatility, such as the POWERflow+ model that has a high pressure mode – ideal for cleaning tough grime – and a high flow mode, which is particularly useful for extended reach, power soaping, power rinsing and delicate surfaces. For best results when using a pressure washer – whether you’re power washing the patio, cleaning outdoor furniture, washing outdoor windows, rinsing out the grill or scrubbing messy garbage bins – aim the spray nozzle perpendicular to the surface you’re cleaning. Use a steady motion because inconsistent pressure leads to striping. Be sure to “feather” your strokes, overlapping

each previous sweep with half the height of the new sweep. Also, allow the detergent soak into difficult stains for 3-5 minutes before rinsing so it has time to latch onto the stain and pull it from the surface. Focus on details. An outdoor space can evolve from a practical area for outside activities into a true extension of your home with just a few simple touches. Plush cushions make it more comfortable to spend extended time outdoors and accents like rugs and decorative accessories lend a sense of character and charm. Convenience features like end tables make it easy to rest a refreshing beverage nearby. Also consider elements like fans and shades to manage the climate as temperatures climb, and don’t overlook the importance of lighting so your enjoyment can continue after the sun fades from the sky. ecks add character and functionality to a home, increasing outdoor entertaining space and oftentimes improving the resale value of a home. Homeowners have various options when choosing decking materials, but one such option, composite decking, is growing in popularity. Decks used to primarily be made from pressure-treated lumber. While lumber remains a popular material, more and more homeowners are opting for composite decking products. As anyone who has pressure-washed, stained and sealed wood decks can attest, such spaces require lots of upkeep to look new year after year. Composite decks require much less maintenance, making them

Composite Decking Can Be A Smart Choice highly attractive to homeowners who would rather spend time using their decks instead of maintaining them. Composite decking is any type of decking material that is formulated from different recycled materials. The majority of these materials include hard plastic and wood shavings of pulp. Unlike wood, which can fade, crack and rot, composite decking, which has been available for roughly a decade, does not degrade quickly and requires very little upkeep. Available in a variety of wood colors to match outdoor decor, composite decks also can feature artificial wood grains to make them look similar to wood planks. Although composite decks are not completely

impervious to the elements, with some occasional washing to impede mold growth and new technology that has improved stain-resistance, many of the pitfalls of other materials can be avoided with composite decks. Composite decking fits in with eco-friendly lifestyles. The planks are made from recycled materials that would normally end up in landfills. Products from Trex, a popular composite decking manufacturer, are made from 1.5 million shopping bags and wood mill waste. As composite decks do not rot away and are long-lasting, they will not need to be replaced frequently, which is another eco-friendly benefit. When comparing composite decking brands, look

mainly at the colors, materials used in the composition and the fastening systems. Many are fastened with regular deck screws, offers This Old House. The newer systems have channels for hidden fastening, and the composite deck tiles snap into place.

Composite decks do have a few drawbacks. They can be expensive — nearly double the initial cost of wood decks. And although they don’t rot, composite planks can scratch. Without refinishing, damaged boards will need to be replaced. Harsh chemicals

may fade color and damage the composite materials, so caution is needed. Composite decking remains an in-demand choice for outdoor spaces. Low-maintenance and long-lasting, these decks have quickly become favorites among homeowners.

ost home cooks want the flexibility of preparing complicated meals with ease and convenience. However, even those with a deft culinary hand may be limited by their tools, space and appliances. Smartly outfitting your kitchen can help you jump meal preparation hurdles, particularly if you are someone who is inclined to prepare multi-course meals. Consider space-saving appliances with versatile functionality that can do more than one job at a time. Just as you can multitask, so should your kitchen appliances. Experts point out that it all boils down to the capabilities of your oven range.

Smart Kitchen Upgrade Ideas to Help You Save Time When pressed for time, you may have compromised on cooking times or temperature, leaving dishes to suffer through over- or under-cooking. Home chefs with this problem should consider upgrading to a double oven range, which would allow you to cook multiple dishes at separate temperatures. Consider the flexibility of being able to bake cookies in convection mode at 350 degrees while simultaneously broiling chicken, all in one unit. If you do plan to make this upgrade, consider your needs and options. For example, if an electric connection is the only option for cooking, consider Verona’s 36 inch fully electric double oven range, which

offers cooking performance one might not expect from a fully electric range. Also available in dual fuel and all gas options, the Verona double oven ranges are fully equipped with two easily programmed multi-function ovens and provide multiple cooking modes, including baking, defrosting and broiling. When form is just as important as function, consider ILVE’s larger double oven range options in 40, 48 and 60 inch sizes. All sizes feature two multi-function ovens and added multi-tasking tools such as a rotisserie and warming drawer. Cooktop options such as a French top and removable griddle give even more flexibility to ambitious home cooks.

With a dual oven range, you may find that a separate built-in oven becomes unnecessary, freeing up valuable cabinet space and

valuable dollars for other useful chef’s tools and supplies. Additionally, upgrading your most important appliances can help you work

smarter, not harder. Love cooking? Give yourself the tools that allow you to get more done. (StatePoint)

What to Know Before Replacing Home Flooring

W

hether you are building a new house or making upgrades on a current home, there is a lot to consider when it comes to flooring. It’s important to keep in mind that the choices available have changed in recent years. Here are some things to know. Choose Style When people choose flooring products, they may be ruling out a large swath of options because of the associations they have with specific materials. For example, you may not associate vinyl with luxury but new products on the market are redefining vinyl flooring, offering fashion-forward high-quality products in

striking elegant designs. Ensure Durability If you love the look of traditional hardwood floors, consider all of your options. New vinyl technologies are allowing homeowners to get the same elegant style engineered to withstand the wear and tear to which wood is susceptible. For example, Mohawk SolidTech, a luxury vinyl tile, has a thick, rigid construction and planks that look and feel just like real hardwood, but are designed to resist scratches, scuffs and indentation, and maintain stability under heat and temperature change. The planks also fit together to create an impenetrable lock so that the floors remain waterproof and odor-

free. Consider Maintenance Make sure the flooring you opt for is easy to clean and requires very little maintenance. If you have pets, you may want to consider getting extra protection with a special warranty designed for pet owners, such as Mohawk’s All Pet Protection and Warranty, which covers all pets and all accidents. More information can be found at MohawkFlooring.com. Before making flooring decisions, get savvy and weigh all your current options. These days, it is possible to find flooring products that combine style, durability and low maintenance. (StatePoint)

he old saying goes that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” If you’re new to caring for a lawn, you may not know that this is especially true when it comes to your yard. If left untreated, weeds can weaken or even destroy a healthy stand of grass. These simple lawn care tips, courtesy of Bayer Advanced lawn and garden expert Lance Walheim, can help you ward off weeds and enjoy healthy, green grass year-round. Start with the basics. Grow turf that is so thick and strong, weeds can’t find an inch to take root by watering and fertilizing properly. Watering too much or too little encourages weeds. Water deeply (6-8 inches)

Weed Prevention Tips For Lawn Care Novices

and allow the lawn to partially dry before you water again. Before fertilizing, read the label carefully to ensure that you have the correct timing. You may also want to conduct a soil test so you know you’re applying the correct blend of nutrients for the soil quality in your region. Local cooperative extension offices are useful resources to help you get started. Also beware of bare spots or parts of the lawn that are not thriving. These areas are an invitation for weeds, so find the cause quickly. Trouble spots can be caused by insects, disease, chemical spills, objects left too long on the grass or broken sprinklers. Once you’ve resolved the

issue, re-seed the area with grass seed that matches the rest of your lawn. Mow at the right height. Grass needs to be the right height to combat the growth of weeds. Grass that is too short exposes weed seeds to sunlight and promotes germination. Ideal blade height varies depending on grass type, time of year and growing conditions, but the most important thing is to never remove more than one-third of the leaf surface at any one time. In general, cool-season grass, like fescue or Kentucky bluegrass, or grasses in shade grow best when maintained at a taller height, approximately 2 1/2-4 inches. If you have warm-season grass, including zoysia and Ber-

mudagrass, maintain it between 1-3 inches. Get tools to help. Specialized tools and products make it easier to remove weeds. A simple garden hoe can do wonders with young seedlings, and dandelion weeders are perfectly designed to remove deep-rooted dandelions. You can also reduce manual labor by treating your lawn with a time-saving selective herbicide product like Bayer Advanced Season Long Weed Control for Lawns, which controls broadleaf lawn weeds like dandelions and clovers. This herbicide not only kills the weeds you can see, but prevents new weeds from growing for up to 6 months. Plus, it’s rainproof in just 1 hour, which

is perfect for rainy spring months. It is not for sale, use or distribution in New York. Be sure to read product labels carefully to understand what weeds will

be killed or prevented. For more information or to learn more about mowing, watering or fixing bare spots, visit bayeradvanced. com.

Two Kids Foundation Looks To Help More Children With Cancer

M

ore than $19K was raised Fri., Feb. 24, at the Two Kids Foundation Winter Gala and Trick Tray event held at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park. About 250 people attended to support the non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to families of children suffering from cancer or other diseases. The foundation raised money through charity events and donations. Last year, the organization donated to nine kids in 2016. The next big event is its annual Car Show set for Sun., Aug. 6 at the Horseshoe Lake Recreation Complex in Succasunna.

The organization which began 19 years ago is run by 100 percent volunteers. Nineteen years ago, founder Arnold “Woody” DeTrolio and his wife sat in a hospital room with their son, who had just been diagnosed with Leukemia. For the next several years their ordinary life had been turned upside down. During this time he was overwhelmed by the volunteers and hospital staff at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC). They made their families trying times easier to bear. Woody said to himself “If I ever get the chance, I would like to give back and help others who are going through their own trying times.” While in the hospital,

Woody and his son would talk for hours about restoring his son’s car, a 1967 G.T.O. he bought before becoming ill. As the weeks and months went by in the hospital, they would look at books and magazines on car parts. They would talk about the day that his son would be able to come home and restore his G.T.O. That wonderful day came two and a half years later. That is when Woody put the two ideas together cars and giving back. His son’s love for cars led to the idea of having a car show fundraiser. In 2003 they hosted the first annual Whippany “Two Kids” Car Show on the grounds of the Birchwood Manor and it was a success.

The Alwell family served as guest speakers at the Winter Gala. Will Alwell was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocyte Leukemia on Sept. 16, 2016.

In 2005 the Two Kids Foundation became an established non-profit 501c corporation. In 2017, the

Traditions Real Estate

organization plans to continue building awareness and helping more children with additional events. Vis-

New Thrift Store On Hold As Bills Surmount, Donations Sought

First we’re up and then we’re down; it feels like I am walking on a tightrope,” says Sandra Ramos, founder and director of Shelter Our Sisters (SOS) and the first domestic violence shelter in North America. A recent newspaper article was able to draw attention to the needs of her organization after a Livingston resident came to visit the shelter and offered to donate to SOS, an organization that is hands on and where the funds go directly

to the needs of the people they were serving. He also saw that the mission was worthwhile as he knew that his recent financial donation would allow SOS to open a new thrift store. The store, which was on target to open next month, was also going to assist in establishing an independent source of funding for the women at the shelter. Meanwhile, plans are on hold as surmounting charges on the water/sewage system are putting SOS’s daily operations in

jeopardy if the balance of $21,000 is not paid. SOS is seeking financial help and is requesting donations. All donations go to SOS, which is currently run by dedicated long term volunteers. A gofundme page has been set up at https://www. gofundme.com/sosdv to make a donation. For additional information call Sandra Ramos, 973-831-6156; email Susan Batt, susanscb@optonline.net; or visit www.sosdv.org.

However, it’s important to understand all your options, particularly if you’ve heard the rule of thumb that you shouldn’t pursue homeownership unless you can put 20 percent down. “In today’s market, misconceptions about down payments are some of the most common, unfortunately” says Danny Gardner, Freddie Mac vice president of Affordable Lending. “And this discourages many prospective buyers from even leaving the starting gate.” Gardner points out that a growing number of homebuyers are putting down between five and 10 percent, and even as little as three percent through products like Freddie Mac’s Home Possible Advantage. This is important to keep

in mind when determining how much home you can afford. Prospective homebuyers concerned about down payments should also be aware that there are nearly 2,500 homeownership programs across the country that can help with down payment and closing costs, and an estimated 87 percent of U.S. homes are eligible for one or more of these programs, according to research by DownPayment Resource. The down payment program benefit most frequently found is about $10,000, making researching these options and discussing them with your lender and real estate agent a worthwhile step. To determine your eligibility and learn more about down payment assistance, visit downpaymentresource. com/are-you-eligible. Of course, home buyers should not forget that

there are benefits to putting more down initially -- this will lower your monthly mortgage payment and reduce the amount you will owe the bank. Additionally, those who put down at least 20 percent don’t have to pay Primary Mortgage Insurance (PMI), an added insurance policy that protects the lender if you are unable to pay your mortgage. However, if putting 20 percent down will deplete all of your savings and leave you with no financial reserves, it’s probably not in your best interest. What’s more, you can cancel your PMI once you’ve built equity of 20 percent in your home. Don’t assume the dream of homeownership is beyond your reach. Get savvy! There are numerous programs and products available that can help you afford your down payment and beyond. (StatePoint)
