Focus And Leadership Aims Wayne Valley Volleyball Program Into Winning Season
By Josh Lashley s is the case with most coaches heading into any given season, Jason Carcich, the head coach for the Wayne Valley High School boys’ volleyball program, didn’t know exactly what to expect once his student-athletes stepped onto the court against what was sure to be tough opposition. As it turns out, the Indians were quite prepared for all comers this spring as was demonstrated with their impressive 21-5 overall record. Wayne Valley definitely made their presence felt in the post-season as they advanced far into the NJSIAA North 1 Sectional Tournament. They defeated Don Bosco and Jefferson before losing in the semifinal round to Fair Lawn. “Having almost an entirely new team this year, all of their wins were impres-
sive to me but the one that stands out the most is our county championship win against Lakeland,’’ Carcich said. “It was the third in a row for the program and Lakeland is an incredibly tough opponent. Lakeland was the pre-season pick to win it since I had lost most of my team from last year. My guys really focused on what they needed to do in that one and I think we caught Lakeland off guard with our energy and preparedness for that match.’’ A major reason why the Indians were so good this year has a lot to do with the leadership which emanated from veterans on the team. “I had two returning starters from last year’s team,’’ Carcich said. “Matt Widovic is one of the best setters in the area and he leads the team in most categories. Being the setter he runs the offense and has a
great relationship with and understanding of every player on the team. Because of that he gets a lot of respect from the team. “Ryan Bender is an outside hitter and he was able to bring a sense of calm under pressure in the tight matches having come from a team that won the County, Conference and Sectional State title last year,” he said. “Both guys were my captains this season.’’ All of the players impressed Carcich with their improvements this spring. “I know it sounds like a cop out, but every guy on the team improved as the season progressed,’’ Carcich said. “We only play six at a time and with a whole new crew it was critical that we continue to develop every week so we could make a push in all of the tournaments. Eric Lee excelled as my libero and really grew

into that role. Kyle DelBalso and Ryan Donohue helped to solidify the rest of my defense. “My middles, Stefan Rodic and Vinny Marrone worked very hard to keep the opposing defensive on their heels while Matt Cohen and Ryan Kurdziel worked the right side of the net. Gennaro Vittorioso was a huge add on this season as a setter. Since Gennaro was able to do his

job well that allowed Matt Widovic to split his duties between setting and hitting this year.’’ Carcich is well aware that it’s never too early to start thinking about next season. “Next season is going to be a tough one because once again I lost just about the entire team aside from two starters,’’ Carcich said. “Although we will struggle more next season it is also Expires 09.04.17
an exciting time because we get to see what young players will be able to step up next season and fill in some of the varsity spots. “Our freshman team did very well this year and we had a lot of athletic players on the team who have really taken to the game. Very much looking forward to working with a highly motivated young group next year.’’

Tax-Free Income
Y
es, that’s correct; there are some forms of income you receive that may be tax-free. Here is a list of ten common sources of taxfree income. 1. Gifts. Gifts you receive are not taxable income to you. In fact, they are not subject to gift tax to the person giving the gift as long as the gifts received in one year from one person do not exceed $14,000. 2. Rental income. If you rent your home or vacation cottage for up to 14 days, that rental income does not need to be reported. 3. Child’s income. Up to the standard deduction amount ($6,350 in 2017) in earned income (wages) and $1,050 in unearned income (interest) for children is not taxed. Excess earnings
above these amounts could be taxed and $2,100 in unearned income is taxed at the parent’s tax rate. 4. Inheritance. In most states, beneficiaries typically do not pay tax on the value of what they inherit. When inherited property is sold by the beneficiary, however, there may be a capital gains tax obligation. New Jersey does still have an inheritance tax which is paid by the Estate. However Class A Beneficiaries are not subject to Inheritance tax in NJ. Class A Beneficiaries in New Jersey include: Parent, Grandparent, Spouse, Child of decedent, Grandchild, great grandchild of decedent, Stepchild of decedent, Civil Union Partner, Domestic partner. 5. Roth IRA earnings. As long as you meet this

retirement account type’s rules, earnings in a Roth IRA are not taxed. 6. Life insurance received. The full value of life insurance received is not taxable income. However, the proceeds may be taxable within the estate of the deceased policyholder. 7. Child support revenue. Income you receive as child support is not deemed to be taxable income. On the other hand, alimony received is taxable income. 8. Home sales gains. continued on page 5

IN, the Wayne Interfaith Network, a coalition of volunteers that provide ongoing provisions of non-perishable food and other necessities to needy Wayne residents, is in critical need of supplies. The WIN food pantry supplies are critically low, and since children will be home for the summer and have no access to school lunch, donations are being requested as soon as possible. Things To Consider Before Getting A Dog
ogs are wonderful companion animals, providing their owners with loyal friends who are seemingly always up for walks or games of Frisbee. Dog ownership is rewarding, but it’s also a significant responsibility. Before adopting a shelter dog or buying from a breeder, prospective dog owners should consider a host of factors to determine if now is the best time for them to welcome a new four-legged friend into their family. Time: Some pets do not require their owners

to commit much of their time. For example, fish and bird owners don’t need to take their pets outside for walks or bathroom breaks,
making them ideal pets for people who want a pet but don’t have the time to devote to caring for more needy animals. A person
considering getting a dog should make an honest assessment of how much time they have to take care of their animals. Dogs don’t just need their owners to take them for walks and let them into the backyard to go to the bathroom. Dogs are social animals and need their owners to spend time with them every day. A person with an especially hectic schedule may want to delay getting a dog until they can free up more time in their days. Money: Owning a dog requires a considerable financial commitment, one

that extends far beyond the adoption fees or prices established by private breeders. Dogs need food, comfortable shelter, toys, and medical care, which can be extensive should dogs get sick. Some dog owners buy pet insurance to offset the cost of veterinarian visits, while others simply pay out of pocket when their dogs have medical expenses. Dogs tend to hide physical problems from their owners, which is why routine veterinary visits are so important. Many veterinarians recommend annual visits for dogs under the age of 10
and visits every six months for dogs 10 and older. A person should make sure they can afford those visits before bringing a dog into their lives. Climate: Where a person lives should also influence their decision to get a dog. Though climate won’t necessarily prevent them from adopting a dog, they may want to avoid adopting certain breeds of dogs depending on where they live. For example, shortcontinued on next page

Things To Consider Before Getting A Dog... continued from previous page nosed breeds, including English bulldogs and pugs, are highly susceptible to heat stroke, as their shorter airways give them less of a chance to cool the air they draw into their bodies. People living in especially warm climates may want to
avoid short-nosed breeds in favor of dogs that are better equipped to handle the heat. Age of the dog: Many prospective dog owners want to adopt puppies so they can be with their new best friends throughout the dogs’ lives. But puppies can
be difficult to house train, and that training takes a combination of time, money, and patience. If a person is not ready to commit all three to house train their dog, they should consider adopting an older dog that is already house trained.

Family members or roommates: Dogs make wonderful additions to a home, but not everyone is cut out for living with dogs. If a person lives with other people, be it family members or roommates, it’s best to consult with them before bringing a dog home, as dogs can change the dynamic of any living arrangement. In addition, they may unknowingly live with someone who has a
dog allergy and cannot cohabitate with a dog. It’s best to consult the people they live with before bringing a dog home, and only do so if they have their blessing. Dogs are great companions who can greatly improve their owners’ quality of life; however, dog ownership is not for everyone, and prospective dog owners should first consider a host of factors before bringing dogs into their homes.

In addition to the taste of the food, couples may want to consider which menu items are offered — particularly those that align with the latest trends in wedding reception catering. Based on data compiled by The Knot, She Knows, Delish, and various food bloggers, the following food trends are worthy of notice. • Food stations: Food stations encourage interaction between a chef/server and the guests. Food stations can include a ceviche bar, fondue cart, quesadilla maker, or custom sliders station. • Colorful foods: Guests are often first tempted by

the appearance of foods, and bold colors can set dishes apart. • Brunch items: Recognizing that daytime weddings can be much less expensive than evening affairs, couples may want to have brunch-themed weddings, featuring omelets, pancakes, French toast, and
other tasty breakfast foods. • Fancier “ordinary” fare: Although chicken fingers and meatballs aren’t normally given gourmet status, they can be dressed up and repackaged for weddings. Whole-grain breadings, Kobe beef meatballs and Asian dipping sauces give foods some flair.
• Family feel: Some weddings are now served “family style” where guests can share from larger passed plates. This serves to connect everyone at the table and encourages conversation, helping to establish a warm atmosphere.

Dorothy Knippenberg was a lifetime member of NARGS and created rock gardens as one of her special display areas. Although they have been cared for by the Rutgers master gardener and Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum volunteers, many of the original rocks have become covered with soil and vegetation and the original designs have become obscured. Volunteers from the Watnong Chapter are working with Laurelwood’s staff gardeners and volunteers on the project. Members of both organizations will have the benefit of learning garden restoration, rebuilding a rock garden and selecting plants. The Watnong Chapter began the project in 2014 and has returned each year. The renovation of the Laurelwood Arboretum rock garden is a five-year project that will offer its members opportunities, hands-on experience in planning, building, planting and maintaining a rock garden. When its work is completed, the chapter expects to schedule workshops and demonstrations at Laurelwood.
