Community Gardens Open Their Gates To The Public
W
By Catherine Bialkowski and Jessica Jones hat better way to spend a weekend than at a local garden, tasting freshly-picked fruits and vegetables and bonding over the sense of community? The Morris County Park Commission and the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum planned to host a free Open Gates Weekend on July 15 and 16 to demonstrate the beauty of the county’s greenery and let guests of all ages engage with nature and with each other.
This is Open Gates Weekend’s second year. Participating this year are the Morris County Park Commission Community Garden, Interfaith Food Pantry Garden, Early Street Community Garden, Morris Township Ted Largman Community Garden at ValleVue Preserve, Madison Community Garden, Washington Township Community Garden, the community garden at South Branch Preserve, Roxbury Community Garden, Pequannock Township Community Garden and Florham Park Community Garden.

According to Cynthia Triolo, manager at the commission’s own community garden, last year’s event saw great success, with more than 200 people in attendance, despite the “terrible weather.” “It was unanimous among the participating gardens that we should make it an annual event,” she said. “Visitors were amazed at what was growing in the gardens and also by how beautiful they were.” The showcase would not be complete without an array of free samples taken directly from the gardens themselves. “One of the gardens did a potluck, one did a salsa tasting, one did a tomato tasting,” Triolo said, referring to last year’s Open Gates. “Others gave away seedlings of chard and kale; others gave seeds; one had music. Every garden offered something different.” This year, visitors expected

Barbara McCloskey, the garden manager at the South Branch Preserve Community Garden, gave an example of the sense of community at her garden, saying that the picnic tables seem to be the most popular part because they allow the gardeners to get some shade and talk to one another. continued on page 2

Community Gardens... continued from front page Community gardens allow freedom to experiment when growing different vegetables. They give gardeners access to seeing firsthand where their food is grown and to know that it comes from a safe, familiar place. “There is nothing like the taste of totally fresh, organically grown vegetables,” said McCloskey. “Since you pick out your seeds or plants, you also have the opportunity to grow different varieties of vegetables that are not usually found in the supermarkets.” Additionally, each of the community gardens donates a portion of what’s grown there to a local food pantry. “Many have garden
plots that are dedicated to giving, and wonderful volunteers who tend the plots and deliver the produce,” said Triolo. “In the past two years, the Morris County Park Commission’s community garden donated over 4,000 pounds of produce.” The South Branch Preserve Community Garden was able to donate 740 pounds of produce last year. Every week during the summer they set up coolers where gardeners are able to donate their excess vegetables, herbs and even fresh flowers. Community gardens are perfect for those who have a green thumb but have nowhere to use it. “The residents are thrilled to have a place to plant, as many either live in
apartments, have too much shade or there are too many animals in their yards to be able to properly grow vegetables,” said McCloskey. Sal Internicola, who has a plot at South Branch Preserve, calls gardening “a lot of work, but fun.” His own garden at home, he said, doesn’t get enough sunlight. A community garden nearby- filled with tomatoes, beets, peas, lettuce, and various herbs - was the perfect solution. “It’s relaxing, and I’ve learned a lot from the other gardeners.” The same goes for Dick Spaedt, another gardener at South Branch. “I heard about it in the newspaper a few years ago,” Spaedt said. “I’ve been here since day one.” Day one, for the South Branch Preserve, took

place in 2013. The community garden is in its fifth year of business - and has nearly doubled in size since the beginning. “We have potluck dinners and a seed exchange; a few times, master gardeners came from Rutgers to talk to us,” Spaedt said, offering a look into the activities that come with being a
community gardener. There are countless opportunities for those who want to get involved. And these events do not only take place at South Branch - each of the gardens has offerings of its own, to enhance skills and encourage social interaction. Whether someone is a master gardener looking for
a place to hone their craft or a novice looking for a place to grow their own produce, a community garden could become a new home. With a prominent sense of community and growth (literally and figuratively), a community garden can foster creativity, awareness and a love for the earth.

Joey Bella Memorial Fund Hosts Annual Fundraisers To Benefit Those With Catastrophic Illnesses
R
By Dawn M Chiossi ecently, the folks from the Joey Bella Memorial Fund hosted their amazing annual fundraisers this July to help those with catastrophic illnesses. Participants had a great time enjoying the Tricky Tray on Sun., July 2, and a Beer, Band Beefsteak on Mon., July 3, held under the tent at Denville’s Gardner Field. Both of these events are held annually on the same day every year. While countless others were enjoying their pre-Independence Day celebrations, those involved with the Joey Bella Memorial Fund were doing what they
have done for years: Helping others. While most people think of themselves as kind and altruistic, willing to help others in need, the folks from the Joey Bella Memorial Fund have actually done exactly this: Looking past their grief of losing their own child, they sought to help others in the same dark situation. Realizing that a child’s grave diagnosis can make loved ones feel utterly helpless and hopeless, the fund utilized their empathy and understanding to make a difference in the lives of others. For 28 years, The Joey Bella Memorial Fund has been helping children who
families in surrounding areas are relieved of some of the stress and anxiety that such a diagnosis brings. Old and new faces showed up in droves for both of the foundation’s events, knowing just how much of a great way it was to bring everyone together. According to Eugene Dolan, attorney for the Joey Bella Foundation, both the tricky tray and beefsteak are the biggest events that the foundation has. “This is it,” he says. “These fundraisers are a nice thing.” Mayor Thomas Andes, is nothing but complimentary. “The volunteers of the continued on page 7
are enduring life threatening illnesses and the families who love them. “Just like Joey Bella’s parents did in 1986 when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. Friends and family helped raise money for a bone marrow transplant for Joey,” as stated on the website. “However, sadly, he passed away before the transplant was possible. Because of their intimate understanding of what families of gravely ill children go through, the Bella family and friends decided to establish The Joey Bella Memorial Fund.” Through the foundation’s financial assistance and emotional support,

Tax-Free Income
Y
es, that’s correct; there are some forms of income you receive that may be tax-free. Here is a list of ten common sources of taxfree income. 1. Gifts. Gifts you receive are not taxable income to you. In fact, they are not subject to gift tax to the person giving the gift as long as the gifts received in one year from one person do not exceed $14,000. 2. Rental income. If you rent your home or vacation cottage for up to 14 days, that rental income does not need to be reported. 3. Child’s income. Up to the standard deduction amount ($6,350 in 2017) in earned income (wages) and $1,050 in unearned income (interest) for children is not taxed. Excess earnings
above these amounts could be taxed and $2,100 in unearned income is taxed at the parent’s tax rate. 4. Inheritance. In most states, beneficiaries typically do not pay tax on the value of what they inherit. When inherited property is sold by the beneficiary, however, there may be a capital gains tax obligation. New Jersey does still have an inheritance tax which is paid by the Estate. However Class A Beneficiaries are not subject to Inheritance tax in NJ. Class A Beneficiaries in New Jersey include: Parent, Grandparent, Spouse, Child of decedent, Grandchild, great grandchild of decedent, Stepchild of decedent, Civil Union Partner, Domestic partner. 5. Roth IRA earnings. As long as you meet this

retirement account type’s rules, earnings in a Roth IRA are not taxed. 6. Life insurance received. The full value of life insurance received is not taxable income. However, the proceeds may be taxable within the estate of the deceased policyholder. 7. Child support revenue. Income you receive as child support is not deemed to be taxable income. On the other hand, alimony received is taxable income. 8. Home sales gains. continued on page 7

Things To Consider Before Getting A Dog
ogs are wonderful companion animals, providing their owners with loyal friends who are seemingly always up for walks or games of Frisbee. Dog ownership is rewarding, but it’s also a significant responsibility. Before adopting a shelter dog or buying from a breeder, prospective dog owners should consider a host of factors to determine if now is the best time for them to welcome a new four-legged friend into their family. Time: Some pets do not require their owners

to commit much of their time. For example, fish and bird owners don’t need to take their pets outside for walks or bathroom breaks,
making them ideal pets for people who want a pet but don’t have the time to devote to caring for more needy animals. A person
considering getting a dog should make an honest assessment of how much time they have to take care of their animals. Dogs don’t just need their owners to take them for walks and let them into the backyard to go to the bathroom. Dogs are social animals and need their owners to spend time with them every day. A person with an especially hectic schedule may want to delay getting a dog until they can free up more time in their days. Money: Owning a dog requires a considerable financial commitment, one

that extends far beyond the adoption fees or prices established by private breeders. Dogs need food, comfortable shelter, toys, and medical care, which can be extensive should dogs get sick. Some dog owners buy pet insurance to offset the cost of veterinarian visits, while others simply pay out of pocket when their dogs have medical expenses. Dogs tend to hide physical problems from their owners, which is why routine veterinary visits are so important. Many veterinarians recommend annual visits for dogs under the age of 10
and visits every six months for dogs 10 and older. A person should make sure they can afford those visits before bringing a dog into their lives. Climate: Where a person lives should also influence their decision to get a dog. Though climate won’t necessarily prevent them from adopting a dog, they may want to avoid adopting certain breeds of dogs depending on where they live. For example, shortcontinued on next page

Things To Consider Before Getting A Dog... continued from previous page nosed breeds, including English bulldogs and pugs, are highly susceptible to heat stroke, as their shorter airways give them less of a chance to cool the air they draw into their bodies. People living in especially warm climates may want to avoid short-nosed breeds in favor of dogs that are better equipped to handle the heat. Age of the dog: Many prospective dog owners want to adopt puppies so they can be with their new best friends throughout the dogs’ lives. But puppies can be difficult to house train, and that training takes a combination of time, money, and patience. If a person is not ready to commit all three to house train their
dog, they should consider adopting an older dog that is already house trained. Family members or roommates: Dogs make wonderful additions to a home, but not everyone is cut out for living with dogs. If a person lives with other people, be it family members or roommates, it’s best to consult with them before bringing a dog home, as dogs can change the dynamic of any living arrangement. In addition, they may unknowingly live with someone who has a dog allergy and cannot cohabitate with a dog. It’s best to consult the people they live with before bringing a dog home, and only do so if they have their blessing.
Dogs are great companions who can greatly improve their owners’ quality of life; however, dog ownership is not for everyone, and prospective dog owners should first consider a host of factors before bringing dogs into their homes. Dr. Matthew Krupnick is the owner of the Pequannock Animal Hospital. He grew up in Kinnelon and is happy to be home – with his wife, three cats, and two dogs – to provide quality and compassionate care for pets in the community. Joey Bella Memorial Fund... continued from page 7 music of The Nerds- a band that got their start in Denville. They danced, and brought their appetite and altruism to this all- youcan- eat event. The food was catered by Geresi Caterers. Crowds enjoyed dinner, dessert, and a beer truck that boasted of more than 16 microbrews! Both Dolan and Andes can’t say enough about what a great time they had, a sentiment that is echoed by so many. “So many people are so faithful,“ Dolan asserts. He even mentions a particular sponsor that brings approximately 30 people with him every year. Andes adds that he and his wife have been attending this event for more than
20 years. Dolan and the folks from the Joey Bella Foundation are effusive in their praise regarding their friends, sponsors and volunteers for both events, thanking them warmly. “We couldn’t have done it without them,” they say. Despite the fun, everyone was reminded that the events were all about the cause and the families, about the emotions and the people involved. Andes shares that the highlight of the night was a teenage recipient who spoke about how the foundation helped her family and how she had been in remission from her disease for seven months. “It was a very emotional moment for everyone,”

Andes remarks. All proceeds from both events go to helping families in need. Donations collected for this year’s events have not been tallied yet, but if the emotion and attendee numbers are any indication, they are sure to be impressive. In the past, donations for this organization have been hugely successful. Funds of more than one million dollars have been collected. More than 50 families have been helped by this wonderful cause. ood can make or break a wedding reception. Couples researching potential reception sites for their parties should be sure to schedule tastings and confirm how the foods will look upon being served. In addition to the taste of the food, couples may want to consider which menu items are offered — particularly those that align with the latest trends in wedding reception catering. Based on data compiled by The Knot, She Knows, Delish, and various food bloggers, the following food trends are worthy of notice. • Food stations: Food stations encourage interaction between a chef/server and the guests. Food stations can include a ceviche bar, fondue cart, quesadilla maker, or custom sliders station. • Colorful foods: Guests are often first tempted by
Did You Know the appearance of foods, and bold colors can set dishes apart. • Brunch items: Recognizing that daytime weddings can be much less expensive than evening affairs, couples may want to have brunch-themed weddings, featuring omelets, pancakes, French toast, and other tasty breakfast foods. • Fancier “ordinary” fare: Although chicken fingers and meatballs aren’t normally given gourmet
status, they can be dressed up and repackaged for weddings. Whole-grain breadings, Kobe beef meatballs and Asian dipping sauces give foods some flair. • Family feel: Some weddings are now served “family style” where guests can share from larger passed plates. This serves to connect everyone at the table and encourages conversation, helping to establish a warm atmosphere.

Donations Lost, Thrift Store AbortedSOS Appeals For Financial Support And Volunteers
By Cheryl Conway vacated plan to open a second thrift store may have dimmed its hope for a brighter future, but the battered women’s shelter organization still hangs on to survive. Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS), a non-profit program serving homeless/battered women and children for more than four decades, had planned to open up a second thrift store in Passaic as early as January this past year. The store, Treasures Two, was going to feature furniture and clothing sales, with proceeds to cover the mortgage and utility costs incurred in operating a seven-facility shelter. Plans to open the store at 919 Main Ave. in Passaic were stalled when the landlord was told he needed to
provide a fire suppression system. In the meantime SOS was paying for storage space for months to house furniture and clothing received from generous donators. When the date to open the store was pushed to March, then April, SOS decided it could not wait any longer for the space to be available as they were losing too much money to rent the storage space. “That store won’t be ready for months,” says Sandra Ramos of Ringwood, founder and executive director of SOS. Edee Galzan, volunteer administrative director of SOS says “SOS was losing money in storage and we couldn’t afford it.” To make matters worse, when SOS announced it had
to pull out, the store’s landlord did not refund SOS all of its money owed to them. “He didn’t give us back all our money,” says Ramos. “He owes us $4,000. We paid three and a half months rent, security deposit.” When SOS stopped paying the rent for the storage space, it soon lost all of its beautiful donations, says Ramos. “It’s a gimmick,” says Ramos. The monthly storage rent had increased from $30 to $300. “We got really nice stuff,” and now it is gone. “Wonderful merchandise over $7,000,” says Galzan. “We lost it. We had to let it go. We signed something; if you are not able to pay, they are allowed to sell it.” With one step forward and two steps back, SOS

continues its appeal for monetary donations, volunteers and necessary items to keep the shelters open. With restricted monies coming in, the organization has been in jeopardy of closing its doors to hundreds of women and children. Established in 1977 as Shelter Our Sisters – Ramos began the first shelter for battered women in North America out of her three bedroom home in Hackensack as early as 1970. The organization changed its name to Strengthen Our Sisters and grew as big as eight houses, two day care centers, a food pantry and a thrift store. The mission of SOS is to break the cycle of domestic violence, poverty and abuse by restoring balance and harmony through individual
empowerment. To support her organization, Ramos receives limited money from sources such as the Passaic County Dept. of Human Services and private donations. Ramos currently has 17 non-paid volunteers who drive shelter residents to look for jobs and attend court, doctor appointments, social services, schools; and run the thrift store and day care centers.
SOS is currently down to seven facilities located in Newfoundland, Wanaque and West Milford, providing shelter to 150 women and children, with more calling every day. Relying on monetary support and understanding lenders has paved the way toward SOS’s shaky survival. One Livingston busicontinued on page 13

continued from page 12 ness person- who had given SOS $35,000 to support the second thrift store and help pay for the shelter’s utility fees- issued another $9,000 to SOS for its troubles. Ramos also managed to get the shelter’s mortgage reduced from $800K to $499K. “Edee’s very organized; we are paying all our bills and trying to hold on,” says Ramos. “She’s organizing the one store.” “We do have a truck now,” says Ramos, to pick up donations. Money is needed for storage of any furniture donations, as well as money for gas to put in the truck. Ramos had been counting on $30,000 from a United Way grant but that was denied when SOS didn’t have its audit completed in time, she says.
“Keeping seven shelters running is no joke,” says Ramos. SOS is $73,000 behind in the monies owed to PSEG and operating costs. Losing the second thrift store, “This really set us back. “We are still accruing bills,” says Ramos. “They are allowing us to stay open; they see we are making an effort. They could have cut us off a long time ago.” While donations are appreciated, Galzan says SOS needs to reorganize its one thrift store for more space before accepting any furniture or large items. Financial donations to help pay for the mortgage and utilities is SOS’s greatest need, as well as volunteers to drive the residents to appointments, work at the store and shelters and landscape the properties.
Other immediate items include large black contractor garbage bags, toilet paper, cleaning products, non-perishable food, fresh fruits and vegetables, beds, a power lawn mower and weed whacker. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1089, Hewitt, N.J., 07421; or call 973831-6156. Those willing to donate can also go to gofundme.com/strengthenoursisters. Another option is to visit SOS’s thrift store, Treasures, at 196 Lincoln Ave., West Milford. In existence for 30 years, Treasures is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call the store at 862-248-9935 for more information. For more information on SOS go to www.strengthenoursisters.org.

Did You Know?
ccording to a survey of its users, the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor found that the average kitchen remodeling project took six weeks to complete. While some homeowners might be turned off by the prospect of having little or no access to their kitchens for more than a month, HomeAdvisor warns that the length of time it takes to
complete a kitchen remodeling project depends on a host of factors, including the scope of the project. Some homeowners reported to HomeAdvisor that their projects lasted for several months, though those projects required extensive work, including moving walls and rearranging plumbing. Others who only replaced the flooring and countertops in their kitch-
ens were back in business in just three weeks. Homeowners should always receive a projected completion date when soliciting estimates from contractors. But it’s also important that homeowners plan for unforeseen problems that may arise during the project, thereby extending the length of time necessary to complete it.
