S
By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta everal months ago, Kim Christian, teen and adult coordinator at the Kinnelon Library, registered online for New Jersey Maker and had been working on it, coming up with ideas. And it worked, as Makers Day weekend was a success, with 17 attendees on Fri., March 24; and 24 on Sat., March 25.
Makers Day highlights at the Kinnelon Library included a silhouette machine; a 3-D printer demo; a button maker; card making; rock painting; adult coloring; and black out poetry – which teenagers ripped out a page of a book, blacking out words, except those they wanted to use, creating poems. “Stuff was going on all day,” Christian said. “We
had a great time and I was really exhausted.” This was the first Makers Day event for the Kinnelon Library. “It was successful and we’ll do it again,” said Christian. In addition to Makers Day, Christian hosts one or two adult programs per week, as well as computer classes, card classes and paint night in May.
The Kinnelon Public Library acts as a central provider of education and information for the people of Kinnelon, offering public computers, free wireless access and competent and knowledgeable staff. Programs are offered for all age groups – adults, teens, and children – as well as free materials, classes, exhibitions, and much more. continued on page 4

The technology used for Makers Day is available to Kinnelon patrons. These include 3D printing; button making, the first one is free; LittleBits, which are DIY circuit components that can be put together in any number of combinations; and print and paint programs. Kinnelon patrons are encouraged to come explore and be creative. Down the pipeline, there will be some new purchases for Kinnelon’s Makerspace. What Is The Perfect Investment For My Retirement Portfolio?
his is a question I hear all the time. “Mark, cut to the chase and tell me what you would do with this portfolio if it were your money”. This question, also heard by me all the time, reminds me of a question my wife once asked my surgeon after my quintuple bypass in 2010, that she put in charge of my case over all the other 168 doctors that weren’t effectively communicating amongst themselves to get me well after I was in pretty bad shape and barely alive. She said this: “Doc, if that were your wife dying over there, and you were compelled to save her and have her return to health, what would you immediately do to rescue her from danger and restore her to health?” I was “that close” to the end, readers and no one, in my wife Terry’s mind was caring, concerned or motivated enough to save her dying husband. She was told over and over, “buy the box – he’s not going to make it!” She realized I had but one chance, one shred of hope, if properly managed, to regain consciousness and survive that horrific ordeal. If missed, she would be returning home alone. Fortunately, her quick thinking and “take charge” attitude saved my life, her hus-
By Mark E. Charnet
band, best friend and the father of her 4 children. Let’s compare this true story to that of your personal financial situation by asking you a simple question, “How many opportunities do you have for a secure retirement?” You work your entire life to accumulate a nest egg and in one day your working income is severed! Whether from an accident, a choice made by you or a choice made by others; on that day you will become dependent on the PAST fruits of your labor and the percentage of it you directed to your very own financial future and the rate of return it received! Your life and lifestyle will be dictated in direct proportion to: First, the amount of savings and investments you’ve scoured away for this day and second, the decisions regarding the positioning of your portfolio to produce a sustainable (hopefully guaranteed*) joint lifetime income with principal access, coupled with a legacy plan for your children. It’s just that simple. Make a poor decision or two and your income and resulting lifestyle may be skewered forever. Therefore, to answer my own question, “How many opportunities do you have for a secure
retirement?” For most of us, the answer is just ONE! Coupled with Social Security and perhaps a pension, your portfolio is basically your only alternative source for an income stream that in my opinion, should not be taken for granted. Quite the contrary; it may be the most critical, vitally important financial decision you’ll ever make. Think of your portfolio as your “spouse” for a moment and you desire her company and involvement in your life for as long as you live. She can’t die, be compromised and must be safely protected from all kinds of risk. What would you do differently, how would you position her assets, what would be your risk tolerance, your dependency level on her performance and frequency of use? I strive for principal, portfolio and income protection with guarantees* to last the rest of your and
your spouse’s lifetime. There is no one perfect investment for your retirement portfolio, but there may be a perfect plan for your retirement. Part of that plan would include the opportunity for liquidity, tax advantages, death benefits, income for life, offer the potential for growth, asset protection from law suits, the incredible financial burden of a long-term care stay with the addition of legal documents providing guidance and leadership during periods of incapacitation, sickness and/ or death. My personal plan back in 2010, included these legal documents naming my wife to be in charge of my health, my daughter as successor and my sister as contingent successor; they were given control of my financial affairs too. In my opinion, financial management is only one aspect of a properly structured retirement program, it must
contain a legal plan of action as well, in addition to a properly funded legacy plan. Fortunately, my legacy plan, though ready, did not need to go into effect back in 2010; I hope not to test those waters for many decades yet to come, but it is spring loaded and ready to jump into action. Are you equally prepared? Is your legacy plan set, your retirement plan loaded to produce indefinite sustainable income? Are you protected from the costs of a health trial, a long-term care incident, a lawsuit, either you or your spouse living too long or dying too soon? And what about inflation compromising your purchasing power over your retirement, are you prepared for that too? I encourage you to sit down with your financial professional/advisor to put these items on the very front burner. If you don’t have a relationship with a qualified advisor, please check me out online and in person. Call for a no obligation appointment to experience a high level of concern, caring and competence from a 35 year veteran of this industry and located in your back yard. I challenge you to challenge me to create a financial plan as unique as you are. Come to our educational workshops
and bring your spouse and a friend. Our Social Security educational workshops are being held April 18th and the 20th 6:30 – 8:00pm. Please call our office for details, reserve your seats and free admission tickets. Common Audit Red Flags - What Attracts The IRS
F
or handwritten taxpayers, preparing their tax return isn’t the problem. It’s the fear of an audit. Audits are fairly uncommon, but the IRS may notice your tax return if certain red flags are present. Here are some of the common audit red flags to help you prepare for the possibility of your return being reviewed. High-income earners. In 2015, 0.8 percent of all individual tax returns were
L
audited, but among taxpayers with income of $1 million to $5 million, the audit rate jumped to 8.42 percent. Taxpayers with income of $10 million or more have about a onein-three chance of hearing from a tax auditor. Making or receiving alimony payments. Alimony payments are taxable income to the recipient and deductible by the payer, but divorced spouses sometimes fail to use the same
numbers. For that reason, the IRS matches deductions taken by the payer to income reported by the recipient. Differences could mean one or both of the spouses are selected for an audit. Having an undisclosed foreign bank account. Taxpayers with balances in foreign accounts that total more than $10,000 during the year must file FinCEN Form 114, commonly referred to as an FBAR. In-
Walk To Cure Lupus
upus, an autoimmune disorder, affects 1.5 million people in the U.S. That is one in every 200 people,
and 16,000 people are diagnosed annually. To help combat the disease there is going to be a 2017 Walk With Us to Cure Lupus
event to be held on Sat., May 20, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Call 866-925-5257 or contact lupuswalknj.org.
ternational banks are now required to report U.S. account holdings to the IRS, so failure to file an FBAR could result in severe penalties and possibly an audit. Claiming big deductions. The IRS tracks statistical data, such as average charitable contributions at every income level and average amounts of other common deductions. Taxpayers who claim above-average deductions might be asked to provide receipts to substantiate those amounts. Business or hobby. Easy Ways To Keep Your Dog’s Ears Healthy
any dog owners never give a second thought to the health of their dogs’ ears. Unless Fido isn’t answering the dinner bell, pet owners may fail to recognize signs that man’s best friend is dealing with ear trouble. Though it’s easily overlooked, maintaining a dog’s ears is something owners must do throughout their four-legged friend’s life. Such maintenance is simple, and owners who remember to make it a part of their dog’s grooming routine can help ensure their

dog stays clean and healthy for years to come. Why must I prioritize ear maintenance for my dog? The anatomy of dogs’ ears is reason enough for
dog owners to make ear maintenance part of the grooming routine they have for their pets. The inner ears of dogs are curvy and provide many spots for bacteria, parasites and yeast to hide and grow. The winding nature of dogs’ inner ears also can make it difficult to expel any debris that enters the ear canal, and trapped debris can cause infection. What are some signs that suggest my dog’s ears aren’t up to snuff? Much like their owners, dogs may suffer from wax buildup in their ears. But unlike humans, dogs
who have wax buildup in their ears may be coping with microscopic ear mites, which can infect dogs’ inner and external ear canals and lead to infection if left untreated. Ear mites can be difficult to see, but the presence of a black or brown waxy secretion may be indicative of ear mites. Dogs with ear mites may also rub or scratch their ears excessively, and that behavior can lead to ruptured blood vessels within the dog’s ear flap, which will look swollen and cause the dog considerable pain.

Other signs that dogs may be having problems with their ears include redness in and around the ear, swelling, crusty skin, and hair loss. Any of the aforementioned symptoms should be brought to the attention of a veterinarian immediately. How can I protect my dog from ear troubles? Simple and routine maintenance is often enough to safeguard dogs from ear troubles. Apply a cotton ball dampened with hydrogen peroxide or mineral oil to dirty areas of dogs’ inner ears. The skin
inside dogs’ inner ears is delicate, so be gentle when cleaning such areas, even asking your veterinarian to show you the proper technique if you are concerned you might hurt the animal. Some dogs, not unlike some dog owners, may grow hair in their ears. While the hair is relatively harmless, it’s still a good idea to discuss its growth with your veterinarian, who can teach you how to remove the hair or even let continued on next page

Dog’s Ears Healthy... cont. from previous page
you know if the hair needs to be removed at all. It’s important that dog owners do not clean their dog’s ears too often. The skin inside dogs’ ears is very sensitive, so over cleaning the ears can cause irritation. When cleaning dogs’ ears, dog owners should never insert anything inside their dogs’ ear canals. Dog owners who let their dogs go swimming
from time to time should dry the dogs’ ears immediately after they get out of the water. Make sure ears are as dry as possible before letting Fido run off, as wet ears can cause infection and irritation. Ears may not be the first thing dog owners think of when trying to protect their pets from potentially painful health problems. But ear maintenance should be a part of every dog owner’s dog-grooming routine.

pring is here, which means it’s time for throwing memorable celebrations for friends and family. Whether you are hosting an Easter brunch or attending a spring picnic, you can make these occasions unforgettable with a few fun and festive additions. Egg Hunt No Easter celebration is complete without an egg decorating station for children and the young at heart. Stock up on a variety of paints, glitter, dye, stencils, and textured fabric, and let imaginations
Fun, Festive Ideas to Sweeten Easter Celebrations run wild. Plan for your Easter egg hunt to take place outdoors, but have an indoor back-up in case the weather does not cooperate. Make sure to take all the ages of participants into account when deciding where to hide eggs! Sweet Treats Anyone with a sweet tooth knows that Easter and delicious treats go hand in hand, so pay extra attention to this essential element of your party. A candy buffet invites guests to try an assortment of treats. To satisfy every-
one’s taste buds, offer milk and dark chocolates, lollypops, springtime truffles and sour bunnies. Stick with go-to candy makers like See’s Candies, which uses high-quality ingredients and is one of the few remaining candy makers that ages its chocolate -- a process that imparts a smoother, mellower flavor and elevates the overall taste experience, making it a great option for Easter entertaining. Spruce Up Take an opportunity to spring clean your home before your gathering. A new
season and knowing guests will be coming over can be great motivators for sprucing up your home. For décor, gather flowers to create colorful centerpieces, including tulips and Easter lilies. Use brightly colored tablecloths and runners, scattering confetti and small sweet treats on tables for a special touch. Fresh Organic Crops Blooming In First Bloomingdale Community Garden
By Cheryl Conway ust in time for blooms in spring, a new community garden will provide a prime spot for residents to grow organic fruits, vegetables, herbs and even flowers in the Borough of Bloomingdale. Grand opening of the new Bloomingdale Community Garden, the first of its kind in town and in surrounding areas, is set to be held on Earth Day, April 22, at noon. More than half of the 20 plots remain available for community members wanting to reserve an area to grow their own products. For $25, a resident can purchase a 12 ft. by 4 ft. plot for the 2017 season, which begins April 22 through end of October or
late fall. Anyone interested should visit town hall to sign up for a plot and receive “a bag of goodies,” says Councilwoman Dawn Hudson of the Borough of Bloomingdale. A place to meet people, learn gardening techniques and simply have a space within town to grow fresh crops without the surround of trees and pestering animals will surely be the freshest place to be in Bloomingdale. Having a community garden, “is something I’ve been talking about for years now,” says Hudson. After considering close to 10 properties for a community garden, officials agreed on the 50 ft. by 175 ft. property on 2nd Street, she says. Its access to water,
parking, “fairly flat” façade and locale being right next to the senior center were also positive attributes to this selected property for the garden. Elaine Gordon, one of the donators for the garden, from Griswold Home Care helped make the garden a reality. “Ten years ago, in conversation with Jean Griswold, the founder of our company http://www.griswoldhomecare.com/ asked me what I would like to create for the community of elders we serve,” Gordon shares on Facebook. “I told her my dream was to create a community garden which would give elders and young folks a space to grow organic produce. continued on page 19

Fresh Organic Crops... continued from page 18 A place where good food would be grown without pesticides and chemicals and feed a community. “Mayor John Dunleavy Borough of Bloomingdale and Councilman Dawn Hudson helped me turn a vision into a reality.” In 2016, organizers started clearing property and leveling the land for the garden. Since last year, “We had a lot of people working on the project,” says Hudson. One Eagle Scout built a shed in the late fall; another Eagle Scout built a walkway from the parking lot to the garden. Lakeland Bank donated money for the garden’s sign; another donor helped with fencing. Mike Fitzpatrick of Fitzpatrick and
Sons came in to level it off with machinery; Boy Scout Troop 86 took out brush, trees and cleared the property. “Our DPW has been absolutely fantastic helping out; water department has been helpful,” notes Hudson. The only community-wide garden to exist in the immediate area, Hudson supported the idea for several reasons. “I think it promotes healthy eating,” says Hudson. “It is a wonderful thing to teach children about gardening, planting and healthy eating.” The Girl Scouts are even getting a plot, she says. “It’s all organic,” Hudson says about the garden. “It’s about having organic lifesyles.”
With the grand opening on April 22, the garden is ready for planting. Plot owners should bring small items such as gardening gloves or a trowel. “We will have the big equipment for them,” says Hudson, like the rakes, shovels and wheelbarrow. “They can plant anything they want,” she says. “If they want just flowers that’s fine too. Most are planting vegetables; it’s theirs to keep.” While some residents maintain their own private gardens in town, Hudson says the community garden provides and area for those who cannot have their own garden because of too many trees or animals that would disturb a garden. There are lots of areas in Bloomindale, with “too

many trees,” says Hudson, and “a lot of animals” like bear and deer, “all kinds of animals who will have a
field day if it’s not fenced in.” The community garden is a “great opportunity to
bring people in who don’t know each other,” says Hudson. “It will bring people together for classes.”
Plumbing Problems?
Not only are ticks annoying, they are also dangerous. They can carry six potentially fatal diseases.

Smart Kitchen Upgrade Ideas To Help You Save Time
ost home cooks want the flexibility of preparing complicated meals with ease and convenience. However, even those with a deft culinary hand may be limited by their tools, space and appliances. Smartly outfitting your kitchen can help you jump meal preparation hurdles, particularly if you are someone who is inclined to prepare multi-course meals. Consider space-saving appliances with versatile functionality that can do more than one job at a time. Just as you can multitask, so should your kitchen appliances. Experts point out that it all boils down to the capabilities of your oven range.

Home chefs with this problem should consider upgrading to a double oven range, which would allow you to cook multiple dishes at separate
temperatures. Consider the flexibility of being able to bake cookies in convection mode at 350 degrees while simultaneously broiling chicken, all in one unit. If you do plan to make this upgrade, consider your needs and options. For example, if an electric concontinued on page 21

continued from page 20 nection is the only option for cooking, consider Verona’s 36 inch fully electric double oven range, which offers cooking performance one might not expect from a fully electric range. Also available in dual fuel and all gas options, the Verona double oven ranges are fully equipped with two easily programmed multi-function ovens and provide multiple cooking modes, includ-
ing baking, defrosting and broiling. When form is just as important as function, consider ILVE’s larger double oven range options in 40, 48 and 60 inch sizes. All sizes feature two multi-function ovens and added multi-tasking tools such as a rotisserie and warming drawer. Cooktop options such as a French top and removable griddle give even more flexibility to ambitious home cooks.
With a dual oven range, you may find that a separate built-in oven becomes unnecessary, freeing up valuable cabinet space and valuable dollars for other useful chef’s tools and supplies. Additionally, upgrading your most important appliances can help you work smarter, not harder. Love cooking? Give yourself the tools that allow you to get more done. (StatePoint)

Buying A Home? What To Know About Down Payments
I
f you’re in the market to buy a home, your down payment is probably top of mind. However, it’s important to understand all your options, particularly if you’ve heard the rule of thumb that you shouldn’t pursue homeownership unless you can put 20 percent down. “In today’s market, misconceptions about down payments are some of the most common, unfortunately” says Danny Gardner, Freddie Mac vice president of Affordable Lending. “And this discourages many prospective buyers from even leaving the starting gate.” Gardner points out that a growing number of homebuyers are putting
these programs, according to research by DownPayment Resource. The down payment program benefit most frequently found is about $10,000, making researching these options and discussing them with your lender and real es-
tate agent a worthwhile step. To determine your eligibility and learn more about down payment assistance, visit downpaymentresource.com/are-you-eligible. Of course, home buyers should not forget that there
are benefits to putting more down initially -- this will lower your monthly mortgage payment and reduce the amount you will owe the bank. Additionally, those who put down at least 20 percent don’t have continued on page 23

ers concerned about down payments should also be aware that there are nearly 2,500 homeownership programs across the country that can help with down payment and closing costs, and an estimated 87 percent of U.S. homes are eligible for one or more of

will deplete all of your savings and leave you with no financial reserves, it’s probably not in your best interest. What’s more, you can cancel your PMI once you’ve built equity of 20 percent in your home.

Durable Décor Upgrades
nterior upgrades should make a big impact -adding style and comfort to your home. They should also last a long time, even if you have a busy household, with lots of foot traffic. To add both form and function to your living spaces, consider the following ideas. Paint and Decorate Sometimes going from drab to fab is as simple as a paint job. Even if you’d like to keep your white walls, a fresh coat can make a room feel brighter, cleaner and more comfortable -- however, you may want to consider the addition of an accent wall or textured design for some pop. Don’t forget your prep work. Sanding and cleaning the walls helps ensure

the paint applies nicely and looks great for a long time. Redo Your Carpeting Soft carpeting provides luxury and comfort at once. However, homeowners who have children or pets, or whose rooms otherwise see a lot of foot traffic may wonder if there is longterm value in installing soft carpeting? The answer is yes, as these days, there are options that are durable, soft and easy to clean. Such carpet features as permanent built-in stain and soil protection, found in options like SmartStrand Silk Reserve by Mohawk Flooring, help to maintain a carpet’s beauty. Indeed, in an independent walk test, the carpeting endured 60,000 steps -- the equivalent of seven years of foot traffic -- and still remained
beautiful. The carpet also comes with Mohawk’s All Pet Protection and Warranty, so pet owners have long-term protection. To learn more, visit MohawkFlooring.com. Reupholster Furniture Add beauty to your living spaces with a furniture facelift. New upholstery can add luxury and style to items that look worn out but are actually in great structural shape. Whether you are a DIY-er or you have this task done professionally, opt for scratch-resistant, hair-repelling leathers and fabrics, especially if you have children and pets or just prefer low maintenance furniture. Give your home a touch of comfort and style with durable floor to ceiling updates. (StatePoint)
