REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL
Setting the record straight?
By Paul Sirett
Critics of Shakespeare’s wholesale defamation of the fiery Macbeth beware! Now, at last, is a new play, based on new facts about the life of the much maligned Scottish king. Deborah McAndrew’s King Macbeth paints a compelling portrait of a gifted and charismatic young man, blown by the winds of birth, grief and love to the brink of power. Using a haunting blend of music, prose and verse, McAndrew discovers passion, violence and surprising tenderness in 11th Century Scotland. The reputation of a great man is restored... or is it?

It’s 1979, Ian Dury and the Blockhead’s new single Reasons To Be Cheerful (Part 3) is climbing the charts. Vinnie and his mates are big Ian Dury fans and they’re desperate for tickets to see him at the Hammersmith Odeon, but the gig’s sold out. Vinnie will do anything to see the Blockheads, but life is complicated. When the chance of going to the gig falls into his lap, Vinnie‘s pilgrimage from Southend to Hammersmith turns into the most extraordinary journey of his life. Set during a time of political change and social upheaval, the show includes some of Dury’s best loved songs (What a Waste, Sweet Gene Vincent, Clever Trevor, Reasons to be Cheerful) played live by an astonishingly versatile company of actor-musicians. This is a show with all the wit, cheek and rascally defiance of Dury himself.
Directed by Benji Reid Via Volcano is a new breed of dancers from Kagiso Township, South Africa who add modern twists to the traditional township dance of Pantsula - a fusion of breaking and hip hop with tap. The crew’s style of dress - with baggy trousers and Converse trainers - has become their trademark and since forming in 1994, Pantsula Via Volcano has scooped various first prizes throughout South Africa including FNB Dance Umbrella, Johannesburg and the Rustenburg dance competition. Via Volcano is touring throughout the UK as part of a festival of South African work called Afrovibes.

THE MEETING
BEHIND THE ICONS, ARE THE MEN By Jeff Stetson Directed by Chuck Mike Behind the myths, are the human struggles that change the course of history. It’s Valentine’s Day in Harlem, 1965. Malcolm X has returned from the UK to an America seething with violence and hatred. His house has been fire-bombed and in one week’s time, he will be assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom. But tonight, separated from his family and with a death warrant on his head, he will risk the scorn of his followers to meet with the iconic leader whose philosophy he has so fiercely opposed: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Taking place just days after Malcolm X’s electrifying visit to England, this highly imagined encounter captures the individual humanity, political maturity and enduring integrity of two men who would ultimately give their lives for freedom. The Meeting is a theatrical event that challenges the state of equality in Britain, from the civil rights era to the present day. Join in with an interactive exhibition and post show forum, and play your part in the debate about creating greater equality in Britain today.
