The Ballad of Maria Marten By Beth Flintoff. Directed by Hal Chambers. A thrilling retelling of a real-life Suffolk murder mystery… Summer, 1827. In a red barn Maria Marten awaits her lover. A year later her gruesomely murdered body is found in a grain sack, barely identifiable. Maria’s story sent shock waves throughout the country. The Red Barn Murder (as it became known) was national news, inspiring writers and film makers down the ages. The sort of gruesome tale that had all the hall marks of a classic crime drama - a missing body, a country location, a disreputable squire and a village stuck in its age-old traditions. But in all this hysteria Maria’s own story gets lost. Until now. Hal Chambers and Beth Flintoff’s spine-tingling retelling rediscovers her story, bringing it back to vivid, urgent life. The War of the Worlds

“Deft and ingenious” The Guardian

“No-one would have believed in the early years of the twentieth century that this world was being watched...” But we did believe. We believed that Martians landed in New Jersey. We believed a water tower was an alien war machine. We believed a man walked on the moon. We believe everything the internet tells us and now the end of the world is being broadcast live... Inspired by H.G. Wells’ sci-fi novel and Orson Welles’ classic radio play, this legendary science fiction thriller is playfully reimagined for our era of Fake News and ‘alternative facts’. “A dynamic acrobatic show with themes familiar to us all – from the highs and lows of sibling rivalry, to the rewards of working together and staying grounded.” Featuring impressive hand-balancing, playful acrobatics and a mysterious box of tricks, BOX offers a humorous and uplifting tale about sibling connection, competition and compassion. Based on, in, atop and around a custom-built Cube that expands over the course of the show, BOX explores that special space (sometimes stifling, often challenging) that siblings share, play, care and grow in. Tue 7 Apr, 7pm Presented in association with Action Transport Theatre and Eastern Angles with the financial support of Arts Council England, Essex County Council and the University of Essex.

The Mystery of the Raddlesham Mumps Murray Lachlan Young (BBC 6 Music poetin-residence) stars in this acclaimed show, a must-see for audiences young and old! After the windswept double funeral of his parents, 7-year-old Crispin de Quincy de Faversham Clumps inherits his ancestral home – Raddlesham Mumps. With only Kenilworth, the ancient butler, for company, Crispin soon learns of the bizarre and hilarious deaths of his deeply eccentric ancestors…and the story takes flight on darkly comic wings. The Mystery of the Raddlesham Mumps mixes compelling storytelling with a brilliant musical score (by Arun Ghosh) and oodles of theatricality and silliness. Perfect for lovers of Harry Potter, Tim Burton, Lemony Snicket and The Brothers Grimm! “Fearsome but funny…. fantastic wordplay” Michael Rosen

Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups and sketch acts from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits! It’s just like a normal comedy club, but it’s on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of heckles like “why is that your face!?” AGES: 6+ DURATION: 60 mins VENUE: New Wolsey Theatre

The Elves and the Shoemaker

Sam Lacey makes shoes that are out of this world. His imagination is huge but his shoemaking business is a disaster! Why would anyone buy a pair of Banana Skin slippers or spend money on shoes for a spider?! Even his neighbour Belinda can’t get him to see sense. Then, one night, two tiny green visitors climb into his kitchen and start stitching and cutting and snipping and gluing… Sam Lacey is about to get the surprise of a lifetime! This hilarious re-telling of the much-loved classic tale from the inescapably inventive Stuff and Nonsense is a total delight for all the family, full of wit, charm and surprising puppetry. Stuff and Nonsense return with another treat for the whole family, following recent shows The Enormous Turnip and The Emperor’s New Clothes.

Talent Development We provide young people with a number of ways to develop their skills and experience as theatre makers through the acclaimed New Wolsey Young Company, and the multi award recognised Young Associates programme. This season you can check them out doing something brand new!

Why So Serious? Sat 25 - Sun 26 Apr, 8.30pm

Why So Serious? Teenagers were invented in the 1950s when a man called Elvis Presley slipped getting out of the shower and discovered a new dance sensation. Since then much of the world has found young people infuriating, hanging around at bus stops, making noise wherever they go, and worst of all having opinions about things they don’t know anything about… but as our political betters increasingly prove themselves to be anything but, we’re turning to young people for inspiration, and most of all hope.

VENUE: Smoke House South Street Studios 6 South Street, Ipswich IP1 3NU

AGE GUIDANCE: 16+

Join our acclaimed company of dynamic young theatre makers as they turn their hand to stand-up comedy in a night dedicated to setting the record straight and changing the world for the better. Expect strong content, big ideas, and one or two impressions of Donald Trump/Boris Johnson.

Audio Described Performances

Audio Description captures the visual elements of a performance that a blind or partially sighted person might otherwise miss and describes them in clear, vivid language through a pair of headphones. Free touch tours take place an hour before the performance.

British Sign Language Interpreted BSL interpreted performances feature a professional interpreter that translates spoken English into British Sign Language. CAP

Captioned Performances

Theatre captions are similar to television subtitles and give deaf, deafened or hard of hearing audiences access to live performance.

Dementia Friendly Relaxed Performances

A Relaxed and/or Dementia Friendly performance is one which has been carefully adjusted to reduce anxiety or stress for those who might otherwise find the experience unsettling or difficult. For example, changes are made to sound and lighting to eliminate surprise and soften their impact and there is a relaxed attitude to noise and moving around the auditorium during the performance. We have experienced these performances’ suitability for audiences with autism, sensory and communication needs, learning and/or physical disabilities, mental health conditions or people living with dementia.
