PULSE welcome
Welcome back to Pulse Festival! This year’s Pulse is bursting at the seams with extraordinary theatre, dance, comedy, puppetry, musicals and circus. It’s the most varied programme we’ve ever created, so there really is something for everyone.
PULSE Festival Ipswich is curated with China Plate and produced by the New Wolsey Theatre
Thank you to our Festival Sponsor:
As always, there are award-winning hit shows from across the UK and beyond, internationally renowned artists, work still in development on Suitcase and Scratch days, and our pay what you can programme on Sun 2 Jun – an exciting opportunity to see artists previously unknown to you or the festival team. This was a huge hit last year, so bring some money and arrive early! There are more local artists than ever before, and, because we could all do with a laugh this year, more comedy too; including an exciting new partnership with the Funny Women Awards on Sat 8 Jun. We can promise you laughter, politics, musicals, acrobatics, sex, a show at the pub and Michael Barrymore (kind of). Don’t miss our big finale shows: 1927’s award-winning, international smash-hit The Animals and Children Took To The Streets – described by the Financial Times as ‘a perfect show’ - and be sure to catch the hilarious Kieran Hodgson’s ’75 which closes the festival.
We can’t wait. The only thing missing is you… Ed, Paul & Rob - Pulse Festival Directors

In an age of climate change and nuclear anxiety, we like to tell stories about apocalypse, disaster, endings. This isn’t quite one of those stories. PAPER MUG THEATRE
Ollie and Laura have been together for three years, and are one pack of reduced M&S olives away from killing each other. But with an engagement ring hidden in an en-route takeaway, Ollie has the task of stopping Laura from walking out altogether. I Lost My Virginity to Chopin’s Nocturne in B-Flat Minor hysterically tackles the fear of loneliness, and dependency to the point of destruction.
A restless Ann paces her room full of shoes, clothes and stories. She’s trying to find those barriers in her life that stop her finding herself... but keep her trying to find a man. Featuring movement and a club soundtrack trying to find me marries Bridget Jones’ Diary and HBO’s Insecure with Blind Date; exposing the secret, heart-breaking, funny and honest world of Ann — a black woman in her early 30s looking for love and in many ways, trying to heal.

Who do you trust when the news is fake, you’re partner is cheating on you and global politics is an exploding clown car? Byron Vincent is diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, but with dying icons, impending climate catastrophe and that bloke from Home Alone Two in charge of worlds largest nuclear arsenal; isn’t abject panic the only sane response?
Renowned astronomer Maggie Hill is giving a lecture about her career, to inspire young women to work in science. She’s also attending her first ever therapy session, in order to overcome some debilitating anxiety. Both events force Maggie to examine her greatest achievements and biggest regrets. A new play about legacy, loss, human curiosity and the economics of failure by award-winning writer Molly Naylor (Sky One, BBC Radio 4).
It’s a glib postmodern world in which cynicism is cool, modern life is rubbish and sincerity is for suckers; but as concepts like truth, peace and hope become risible anachronisms, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate our perspective. The Animals and the Children Took to the Streets
Welcome to the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions; a sprawling stinking tenement block, where curtain-twitchers and peeping-toms live side by side, and the wolf... is always at the door. When Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive late one night, does it signal hope in this hopeless place, or has the real horror only just begun? Seamlessly synchronising live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation this is the wickedly twisted international hit tale from the multiple award-winning company behind Golem, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and The Magic Flute. Like a giant novel burst into life, 1927 invite you on a theatrical journey of startling originality.

Kieran Hodgson ‘75
Passion. Betrayal. Harold Wilson. Character comedian Kieran Hodgson returns with the epic and surprising tale of how Britain joined Europe in the first place. On a deeply personal quest for understanding, Kieran perfects a series of obsolete impressions and discovers that the 70s were about more than just TISWAS, the colour brown and the words ‘Let’s go on strike again’. Three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee, Star of Radio 4’s Earworms and Lance, and as seen regularly on BBC2’s Two Doors Down, Upstart Crow and Dad’s Army: We’re Doomed.

Augmented
After winning the Suitcase Prize in 2018, we developed the script and sound design, and performed three scratches at Ovalhouse. Later, we worked on embedding the captions and audio descriptions within the design during a workshop at The Bush (supported by New Wolsey Theatre). We have just won an Arts Council England grant to tour Augmented as a full production. We have big plans for the tour, which will begin in early 2020. The lengthy process of raising funding, and tour booking has meant that we’re not yet ready to return to this year’s Suitcase Day (gutted not to be seeing everyone again!). But I’m certain the long wait will be worth it, to show you the fully finished work in 2020, with itsbeautiful, accessible design. weareunlimited.org.uk sophiewoolley888 sophwoolley
