THE RETURN OF THE SOLDIER MUSIC BY CHARLES MILLER BOOK AND LYRICS BY TIM SANDERS BASED ON THE NOVEL BY REBECCA WEST
On the centenary of the First World War’s end, The Return of the Soldier is an intimate new chamber musical based on Rebecca West’s celebrated 1918 novel. This intensely bitter-sweet tale dissects the very different love of three women for one man. When Christopher returns from the front with shell-shock, there are profound consequences for each of them, and for their love. This powerful new drama, with its rich and arresting score, becomes an eloquent treatise on the nature of love, truth, memory and loss. In the end, only an extraordinary sacrifice will restore a fragile status quo. MON 1 OCT 7:45pm

THE HABIT OF ART DIRECTED BY PHILIP FRANKS STARRING MATTHEW KELLY AND DAVID YELLAND
Alan Bennett is one our greatest and most celebrated playwrights, with a cavalcade of stage and screen blockbusters including The History Boys, The Madness of King George and Talking Heads. He is applauded as a genius for his sharp character observations and treasured for the way he beautifully balances wit, wistfulness and compassion. In The Habit of Art, Bennett gives us a play about a meeting between the poet WH Auden and the composer Benjamin Britten. Exploring friendship, rivalry and heartache this multi layered masterpiece examines the joy, pain and emotional cost of creativity. This “deeply moving” (The Guardian) production, directed by Philip Franks, marks the first ever revival of the play and stars the Olivier Award winning Matthew Kelly (Of Mice and Men, Toast and Pride and Prejudice), David Yelland (Chariots of Fire and The Crown) and Veronica Roberts (Peak Practice and Tenko). “ Another absolute cracker, often wonderfully funny but also deeply and unexpectedly moving” Daily Telegraph

Venice; a western colonial power employs the newly-married Othello, a Muslim general, to lead their army against the impending Turkish invasion. The strain of fitting into a society riven by discrimination and fear soon takes its toll. Manipulated by Iago, Othello’s life quickly unravels as he turns on everything he holds dear. Following a critically acclaimed tour and London run, Richard Twyman’s vital production of Othello is brought to the stage by UK Theatre Award winners English Touring Theatre. TRIAL BY LAUGHTER
Following critical acclaim for The Wipers Times, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman have once again taken inspiration from real life events for their new play Trial by Laughter. William Hone, the forgotten hero of free speech, was a bookseller, publisher and satirist. In 1817, he stood trial for ‘impious blasphemy and seditious libel’. The only crime he had committed was to be funny. Worse than that he was funny by parodying religious texts. And worst of all, he was funny about the despotic government and the libidinous monarchy. LISA HAMMOND AND RACHAEL SPENCE WITH IMPROBABLE AND THE ROYAL COURT THEATRE
LIPSERVICE PRESENT
STILL NO IDEA
Best mates Lisa and Rachael wanted to make a piece of theatre but didn't have an idea, so they went onto the streets and asked the public. What the public said when they saw Lisa in a wheelchair and Rachael not, was funny, jawdropping and ultimately heart-breaking, so they made a show out of that. It was called No Idea. Now people say the world has changed and things are looking up. There are more disabled people in the mainstream media, Lisa landed a big part on TV and disabled mates are getting regular auditions – happy days. So what kind of exciting stories are the TV professionals dreaming up for them? Still No Idea is the whole story (so far): the British public, the professional writers, the TV execs. Part verbatim theatre, part improv, part comedy sketch show, this is a raucous and mischievous exposé of good intentions gone bad and how sometimes no matter how hard we try, we still have absolutely no idea. “Pin sharp, provocative and hugely entertaining” The Times on No Idea MON 24 SEP 7:45pm

WITHERING LOOKS Britain’s favourite literary lunatics are back with their cult Brontë spoof, Withering Looks. In the 200th anniversary year of Emily’s birth, the classic comic duo, Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding, just couldn’t resist the urge to dust off their crinolines, wear flattering bonnets and sit at rained-lashed windows in a pale and decorative manner. Don’t miss the chance to share in the silliness too! Withering Looks takes an authentic look at the lives and works of the Brontë sisters; well, two of them actually, Anne’s just popped out for a cup of sugar. Peopled with many of the characters we know and love, LipService’s Maggie and Sue move effortlessly from frock to frock coat. “It’s a joy – very, very funny” The Guardian

Star of 1950s British stage and screen, the legendary Norman Wisdom packed houses across the UK, won the hearts of millions and remains one of the UK’s comedy icons. Success on the silver screen including the hit song Don’t Laugh at Me sealed his fame. But, as ever, fame came at a price… Portraying thirty characters in this tour de force performance, Jack Lane takes you on an emotional roller coaster, revealing the man – and the extraordinary talent – behind the Gump costume. The Gump costume that features in the play belonged to Norman himself and has been generously loaned to the production by his son and daughter, Nicholas and Jacqueline Wisdom.

WOKE
BY APPHIA CAMPBELL AND MEREDITH YARBROUGH
From the creator of the hit show Black Is the Color of My Voice comes a new story about the 20th-century African-American experience. Against a powerful soundtrack of original music and traditional gospel and blues sung live, two women 42 years apart become involved in the struggle for civil rights. One, a notorious Black Panther Assata Shakur; the other, a present-day university student enrolling as the Ferguson riots begin. Both challenge the American justice system, become criminalised through political activism, and ultimately are faced with the same choice: stay and fight, or flee? WOKE won the coveted Scotsman Fringe First Award for its premiere season, and was highly commended by the judges of the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award.

CHINA CRISIS
Olivier Award-winning OperaUpClose present their critically-acclaimed, new English version of Tchaikovsky’s sweeping Eugene Onegin. This chamber version will transpose the story of Tatyana’s sexual awakening to the early 1960s, a world on the cusp of the women’s liberation movement when new thinking fought against the old ways. This coming-of-age story is a requiem for lost innocence and a triumphant celebration of hard-won independence, told through some of the most glorious vocal music ever written.
Liverpool legends China Crisis are making their first ever appearance in Ipswich. Performing their classic album Flaunt the Imperfection in its entirety; alongside hit singles like. Wishful Thinking and Christian. Flaunt The Imperfection sold a million copies worldwide and included the successful songs Black Man Ray and King In A Catholic Style. The album was produced by the late, great Walter Becker (Steely Dan) who became both a friend and collaborator as well as guide and mentor. The founding duo behind China Crisis, Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon, will be joined on stage by a stellar band of musicians handselected by them to perform some of the very best music of the 1980s and now.

PRISON GAME
When prison is your world, how do you function within society? This gripping, and at times chilling, one-man physical theatre performance is the story of how prison can define a man. Developed using real life accounts of extraordinary experiences, this mainly biographical story deals with the effects of institutionalisation on the psyche of an individual and the people around them. Told through a series of characters (brought to life by the physical dynamism of Marcus Hercules), you are taken on a young boy’s journey from primary school through to adulthood. TUE

"We need to use our imagination. We need to imagine that change might be possible. That change is possible, however hard or impossible it might seem. In a blend of languages, including fully integrated BSL, three performers tell a story from three perspectives. It is the story of an international meeting. A meeting called to respond to a crisis. A meeting at which something happened, and in that moment everything changed. Exploring equality and inviting action, SUMMIT is the new play by renowned theatre-maker Andy Smith, writerperformer of The Preston Bill, Commonwealth, and (alongside Tim Crouch), what happens to the hope at the end of the evening.

Free touch tours take place an hour before the performance. INTERPRETED BSL interpreted performances feature a professional interpreter that translates spoken English into British Sign Language. PERFORMANCES Theatre captions are similar to television subtitles and give deaf, deafened or hard of hearing audiences access to live performance.
WHEELCHAIR

There are 6 wheelchair user accessible spaces in the New Wolsey Auditorium, 4 in row C and 2 in row K. The studio auditorium has 2 wheelchair user accessible spaces with a small passenger lift to the auditorium. The HEG is wheelchair user accessible also.
DEMENTIA FRIENDLY RELAXED PERFORMANCES
A Relaxed and/or Dementia Friendly performance is one which has been carefully adjusted to reduce anxiety or stress for those who might otherwise find the experience unsettling or difficult. For example, changes are made to sound and lighting to eliminate surprise and soften their impact and there is a relaxed attitude to noise and moving around the auditorium during the performance. We have experienced these performances’ suitability for audiences with autism, sensory and communication needs, learning and/or physical disabilities, mental health conditions or people living with dementia. Our Bradbury Platform is installed for these performances, increasing our wheelchair user accessible spaces up to 12. We are working towards being a Dementia Friendly Venue and staff members are Dementia Friends. We look forward to welcoming you on your visit to the theatre.
