Club of Woodend
SEPTEMBER 2018 Volume 22 // Issue 8 FIRST PUBLISHED 1997
September is the month Woodend emerges from the shivers of winter and we embrace the colour and abundance of spring. However, for many Australian farmers, winter has been an unrelenting period of blazing sunshine, no rain, dust filled paddocks and starving livestock. And it doesn’t look likely to end soon.
Farmers are the lifeblood of our country... And right now they are in crisis. Record breaking heat and lack of rain mean farmers are struggling to feed sheep and cattle, and to keep crops alive. Families on the land are suffering

and they need our help. Many communities and businesses around the country have already responded. The Rotary Club of Woodend is committed to doing our bit, and we invite all local residents to join us in helping raising funds. Rotary Australia and Channel 9 are partnering with the National Farmers’ Federation to launch an appeal to all Australians, so we can provide some emergency relief. The appeal aims to raise $10 million with 100% of all donations going straight to the farmers. Contributions are tax deductible. The link for the donation page for the project is: donations.rawcs.com. au/17-2018-19. Please contribute
what you can—every dollar counts. Equally, if you have an idea for a fundraiser, and would like some help putting it together, please get in touch. Rotary Woodend is active all year round, raising funds for local and international projects, and we would be pleased to help you bring your fundraising idea into action. Please contact Community Services Director Josephine Falzarano on 0407271628. Let’s all pull together to help our farmers at this difficult time. Red Cross Woodend has also launched an appeal: See the story on page 20. SUBMITTED BY MIKE HAMER ROTARY CLUB OF WOODEND

Daniher's Drive comes to Woodend Woodend will host the Morning Tea Event for Daniher’s Drive on Thursday 11th October at the Woodend Community Centre, and everyone is invited! Daniher’s Drive is a four-day drive through Victoria, particularly rural towns, engaging whole communities by playing games, sharing stories over morning tea and enjoying a range of local activities and entertainment. The event is promoted across TV, radio, social media, newspapers, and appeals to young and old alike. This year’s event will have around 400 participants in approximately 130 cars and a bus. The organisers have selected Woodend as their first stop. The show will arrive in Woodend at 10.30am for an hour, and the whole town is invited to visit the participants, view the vehicles, enjoy the morning tea and get on board the excitement of this important fundraising event. In 2014, Neale Daniher co-founded Fight Motor Neurone Disease (MND), and subsequently leads the charge in the quest to cure, to care and to make everyone aware of the condition. It is the largest not-for-profit organisation committed to building awareness of, and funding research to find treatment and a cure for MND. ‘Les Miserables’ wowed audiences After 18 months of planning and hard work (longer if you include the Director’s years of dreaming!) the Mount Players presented Les Miserables during the month of August–and what a show it was. A huge cast, including understudies to all principal roles, a massive orchestra and a backstage crew that could fill quite a few seats at the ‘G’, worked tirelessly and passionately to ensure this production was nothing short of superb. An unprecedented 20 shows were sold out 6 weeks prior to opening night, prompting the Players to add yet another show to enable more patrons the opportunity to attend. The extra night was sold out to those on the waiting list! Director Andrew Meldrum, supported by co-director, Margaret Cameron and musical director, Jem Sherwill, are to be commended for gathering such a cast and crew and bringing to life this iconic show at our unique Mount View Theatre. What a moving experience it was.

Council adopts 10-year arts and culture strategy
Message from our Councillor
Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s new 10-year arts and culture strategy promises a range of cultural experiences to delight, engage and challenge locals and visitors. The strategy, which will guide how Council promotes, supports and invests in the arts and culture in the shire until 2028, was adopted by Council at its meeting on Wednesday 25 July 2018. Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said the community had reflected on what matters to them, now and into the future regarding arts and culture, and the strategy indicates that. “Arts and culture in the Macedon Ranges is alive and well,” she said. “Survey results during the consultation phase of the project highlight how important it is to our community to be able to access arts and culture locally, and that’s something we’re focusing on. “The strategy offers us a framework to guide how we fund and support arts and culture in the shire, and the document will inform each year’s budget into the future.” The goals within the Arts and Culture Strategy 2018-2028 include: • opportunities for people to participate in artistic and cultural appreciation and expression • connect our community by interpreting and celebrating our region’s stories • partnerships that inspire and support innovative arts and culture projects and activities • enhance the local economy by providing opportunities for local talent and arts-related businesses to thrive • cultural planning integrated with other planning disciplines and place-making • our community has access to a range of diverse, viable and vibrant cultural assets across the shire..
It was a lovely evening when community groups gathered for the presentation of grants received for the Events and Festivals, and Community Funding Scheme. Each year, Council receives an increasing number of applications, and l would like to acknowledge and thank all those groups who applied, as well as our staff, who spent a great deal of time assisting applicants and assessing the submissions. As always it is a difficult decision. Staff are always available to provide feedback. This year, Council received 74 applications in total for the grant programs, with 51 initiatives successful in receiving a share of $181,975. Congratulations to the finalists for the 2018 Bendigo Bank Macedon Ranges Business Excellence Awards. This year there were 712 nominations. Thank you to groups for continuing to invite us to attend events, such as the Rotary Lunch Fundraiser for the Woodend Men’s Shed and The Woodend Neighbourhood House / RSL Community Lunch. l also caught up briefly with the Woodend Senior
“Arts and culture have an important role to play in the social, cultural and economic development of the Macedon Ranges, and we look forward to continuing conversations with the community on how we can further enhance that,” Cr Anderson said. For more information about arts and culture activities and events in the Macedon Ranges, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/ arts or call 5422 0333. SUBMITTED BY LEANNE MANTON MRSC

Citizens, who are very welcoming and are always looking for new members. Please continue to invite us and let us know what is on. We were pleased that some people were able to attend the Councillor session recently held at the Woodend Library. It was a chance for us and our CEO, Margot Stork, to hear again what projects the community are involved in and what issues are concerning people, and to have some open discussions. As we leave the winter months behind, we know everyone is itching to get stuck into their gardens. In September, free mulch will be available from our Transfer Stations. Are you switched on about safety switches?
Open Sundays only 10am - 4pm
Safety switches offer great protection to you and your family. But did you know that if your home is more than ten years old, you might not be protected? Older properties often have outdated ceramic fuses or circuit breakers. These devices are only designed to protect your home against overloading power, and offer no protection to your family against electrical shocks, injury or death from hidden faults. What faults can occur? The older the property, the greater the risk of electrical faults. Common causes include the wearing down of cable insulation, faulty appliances, poor installation, water leaks, and wildlife hiding out in your roof. What does a safety switch do? A safety switch protects your family from electrical faults that may be dangerous. They monitor the flow of electricity through the circuit around your home and automatically turn the power off within 0.03 seconds when it detects something that is unsafe. How do I know if I have one? You can check if you have any safety switches by looking in your switchboard to see if the switches have a test button marked with a ‘T’. Only safety switches will have this test button. Not sure what to look for - Safety switches can come in many forms, so it can be difficult to tell them apart. This is why Bluegum Electrical offers free safety inspections to help keep Woodend families safe. SUBMITTED BY CHANTEL @ BLUEGUM ELECTRICAL

The Woodend Kindergarten Committee, with Council support, has been successful in being shortlisted for the State Government’s ‘Pick My Project’ grant. Should we be successful, this grant will allow us to implement the naturebased play masterplan for the outdoor space at Woodend Kindergarten, which has been developed over the past couple of years by recognised landscape architects with input by the children, parents and teachers of Woodend Kindergarten, along with Council. Council has funded Stage 1 works in the 2018/19 Budget, to remedy existing drainage problems. In this year alone, two pieces of large outdoor equipment (including the muchloved timber pirate ship) have been removed from the play space as they have been deemed unsafe, reducing the opportunities for our children to learn and explore. Should we be successful with Pick My Project, we will be able to implement the entire vision for the new nature-based play space. Kindergarten Committees past and present work tirelessly to fundraise to provide our children with quality outdoor education spaces. We would sincerely appreciate if the community voted for our project–you also get to vote for two other local projects that you believe deserve a part of the $1 million available for our region. To vote: 1. Go to www.pickmyproject.vic.gov.au 2. Search for Woodend as your location 3. Register and Vote for Woodend Kindergarten: Playground Upgrade and two other local projects (you must vote for three projects in total) 4. Kyneton District Health is currently recruiting Consumer Representative volunteers to join its Consumer and Community Advisory Committee (CACAC). CACAC meets four times a year, usually on a Monday over lunch. CACAC volunteers represent the consumer in health policy, planning and service decisions at Kyneton District Health. Committee members help KDH to understand how consumers feel or think about certain health issues and keep the organisation up to date on any relevant issues affecting consumers in the region. Lancefield Macedon Ranges: Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of March 2019
Suicide prevention is everybody's business We are seeking local residents to join the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group (MRSPAG). This local community group is made up of residents, Council and service providers in the Macedon Ranges. Some members have been impacted by suicide, while others are passionate about preventing suicide in their local community. MRSPAG aims to smash the stigma around suicide and mental ill health, to raise awareness in their community, to offer support for those bereaved by suicide, as well as to work collaboratively to improve the quality of mental health services in the Macedon Ranges. To be an active member of MRSPAG involves contributing to a working group. Members share their opinions, knowledge and skill sets to take actionable measures in the prevention of suicide. Some of the working groups include, Communications and Advocacy, Peer Support for those bereaved by suicide and the annual MRSPAG walk. Narelle Trewin, an active member of MRSPAG’s peer support group, explained why being a part of MRSPAG and contributing to the prevention of suicide in her local community was important for her. “I sadly lost my brother to suicide and felt absolutely devastated by the loss. However, through my adversity I found an amazing group of people (MRSPAG), a group where I can passionately and actively create change. The absolute bonus is I have made some wonderful lifelong friendships.” By being part of MRSPAG you have the opportunity to take action in preventing suicide and reducing stigma in your community. Paramedics arriving at Macedon Ranges emergencies faster than ever before. Minister for Ambulance Services Jill Hennessy today joined Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas MP and paramedics at Point Cook to release the June quarter ambulance data, which shows ambulances are once again arriving at emergencies faster. The latest statewide data shows 83.8 per cent of all Code 1 urgent ambulances are arriving at emergencies within 15 minutes, within an average 11-12 minutes of being called out. This is 38 seconds faster than the previous 12 months. In the Macedon Ranges Shire, 65.2 per cent of ambulances are now arriving at Code 1 emergencies within 15 minutes, compared with 63.4 per cent the year prior. This means the average time an ambulance is taking to reach the scene of a Code 1 emergency in the Macedon Ranges over the same period has improved. “Victorians can have every confidence that our hardworking paramedics are providing the best of care, and will be on scene quicker than ever", said Mary-Anne Thomson MP.

Meningococcal disease - should you be vaccinated? It is really difficult to predict who might become infected with meningococcal – an uncommon disease.
Although it rarely occurs, it is a very serious disease for those unlucky enough to be infected. The infection itself can develop very quickly: in less than a week and it can be fatal in 5-10 per cent of cases.
Kids in Australia have been receiving a C strain meningococcal vaccine, an immunisation on the Australian vaccination schedule since 2003. This vaccination program has been very successful because C strain is something we hardly ever see.
Anyone might contract this disease, but young children and teenagers are our higher risk groups. Unfortunately we do now see other strains of meningococcal disease, mainly B and W. There are 13 different types of meningococcal bacteria but five of them (A, B, C, W, and Y) account for most cases of meningitis or sepsis due to meningococcal bacteria. Teenagers are at risk, because the bacteria lives in the nose and throat and is spread by close contact and we all know how teenagers like to practice their kissing. Excitingly a meningococcal vaccine which covers the strains of A C Y W. For15-16 year olds it’s free and last year a catch-up program was rolled out up to the age of 19. Kids on university campus can also be at risk as can kids who backpack and hang out in crowded places. Should you have your teens and young adults vaccinated? We think so. For 15-16 year olds it’s free but it can be purchased privately for anyone outside of this age range.
This four strain meningococcal vaccine is now also on the childhood schedule at 12 months of age, replacing the single strain C vaccine. For younger kids who have missed out the vaccine is available privately. We keep plenty in our vaccines fridge.
September 2018 B strain meningococcal vaccine is a separate vaccine and a little harder to make so it is rather expensive and kids sometimes need 2 or 3 doses. We don’t keep this one on site but can provide a script.
There is a lot to understand about meningococcal vaccination and the nurses are always happy to guide you through this so please feel free to call or ask your GP at the next visit. Asthma triggers
With fires being lit for winter warmth or burning off vegetation, many asthma sufferers are doing it tough. This is the time of year when air pollution can trigger asthma.
We can help you identify your triggers and develop a plan to manage your symptoms. Please make an appointment to see Michelle Neal our Asthma Nurse and have your appointment linked to your preferred GP. Appointments with Asthma nurse Please bring your own spacer for asthma and spirometry appointments. We can provide a disposable spacer for a $5 fee, but to help look after the environment please bring your own. Flu vaccine availability Since our last newsletter we have received flu vaccines in varying amounts. Those most at risk of flu complications were given vaccines first. We are hopeful of a more free-flowing supply of vaccines from here on, but unfortunately we have no control on supplies. Keep an eye on our website www.bsmc.net.au for changes in availability of vaccines. Brooke St. Medical Centre – tel. (03) 5427 1002 After hours GP Helpline - tel. 1800 022 222 17

‘Bags of Ideas’
In July, we put a call out on behalf of the Woodend Community Bags team for great local ideas that deserved $500 to help bring that project to life. We received bag-loads of brilliant ideas and the top three received over 1,000 community votes! The ‘Bags of Ideas’ campaign proved just how thriving, creative, and giving the Woodend community truly is and has also given us loads of inspiration for new projects at the House. For the winner, see the winning project on page 22

The World’s most expensive art: Where Leonardo Meets Picasso
Please join guest lecturer, Ian Swankie at the Kyneton Town Hall on Thursday 13th September when his lecture will focus on the top end of the art market. Paintings by Picasso, Cezanne, Leonardo, Rembrandt, Modigliani, Klimt, Bacon and Pollock are all held together by the common thread of their extraordinary commercial value. Would they achieve such sky-high prices if they were no good? The lecture will also look at the buyers and sellers, the backstory of the works, and reasons why they have changed hands. Ian Swankie is a Londoner with a passion for art and architecture. He is an official guide at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Guildhall Art Gallery and St Paul’s Cathedral, giving regular tours at each venue. We can’t make it rain, but we can help drought-hit farmers Right now, our teams are on the ground everywhere from Greece to Lombok, supporting thousands of people affected by a string of major disasters. We have also launched a special fundraising appeal for Australia’s drought-hit farmers. April to June this year has been the fourth driest period since records began more than 100 years ago. Every week without deep, soaking rains is another week of despair. Help our support effort by donating to our special appeal. No, we can’t make it rain, we can’t save crops and livestock, but with the donations we raise there are many small ways we can help. Want to get behind our farmers? You can help us contact more people than we could ever reach on our own. Please help us spread the word by sharing our appeal on your social media networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkdIn. You’ll find Australian Red Cross on all these sites. Kidzflip bags the cash
SEPTEMBER | 2018
Bags of support for youth in the Macedon Ranges Local community has voted and chosen Kidzflip as the winner of the inaugural Bags of Ideas fund. KidzFlip empowers young people to become global citizens by building skills through community engagement. Kidzflip founder and local Police Officer Jason Azzopardi said “This is such great news for the youth of the Macedon Ranges. This money will go directly towards our mentoring program,” The Woodend Community Bag team launched the Bags of Ideas $500 fund after their Woodend Farmers’ Market sales of Community Bags exceeded all expectations and they found themselves in the enviable position of having more funds than they needed to run their weekly sewing bees. Jenny Adams from Woodend nominated Kidzflip to receive the money having read about the work they do to support youth through mentoring. In her application she wrote “Kidzflip does such great work with the young people of the Macedon Ranges – I think they deserved a boost” Over 1,200 people from across the Macedon Ranges voted online and in person at Woodend Neighbourhood House and Woodend Library to choose the winner.
The winning ‘cheque’ was presented at the August Community lunch. Officer Azzopardi expressed his gratitude to Jenny from Woodend for taking the time to put Kidzflip forward for the money, and to all the young people who shared the voting page to help Kidzflip get over the line. What a great show of community support. If you would like to get involved making Woodend Community Bags the team meets every Thursday from 9am to 2pm at Woodend Neighbourhood House.

Local businesses generously donated prizes, Joel McKerrow the MC from the State Library said Woodend gave the event a great welcome. Joel performed three times. The RSL was a great venue, with snacks and drinks for sale. The two top scorers go to the state final at State Library in September. We would like to thank the following Woodend businesses for their generous support. Joel promoted the businesses during the evening and the winners all appreciated the gifts. Most of the vineyards in Macedon Ranges are marginal in climate, and quite small in size when compared to other Australia wine regions. The marginal climate means significant viticulture effort is required to produce the quality wines that characterise the region. Given the amount of care and scarcity of the wines it’s not uncommon for them to be priced from $30 - $50. This month, two examples at around $30 providing a great representation of the region in terms of both quality and value.
2017 Midhill Vineyard Romsey Creek Pinot Noir There is a floral note to pristine red cherry fruit that is set against an earthen backdrop that is a consistent hallmark of top end Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir. Tautness of red cherry keeps the wine honest in its youth and gives contrast to richer spices and rhubarb notes. Tannins have a gossamer thread and give a drying texture that adds dimension. The finish provides gently spiced rhubarb and cherry fruits with generous mouthfeel. A bargain Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir. Rating: 95 | Price: $30 | When to Drink: 2018 - 2028

LOCAL'S HAPPY HOUR 5pm to 7pm every Thursday
The Lacuna pays homage to Burgundy, which produces two distinct styles of Chardonnay–the richer, barrel-fermented expressions from Meursault, Puligny and Chassagne, compared to the fruit-driven but age-worthy wines of Chablis. The Lacuna is Chablis-like, with the Curly Flat Estate release very much in the style of Chassagne. A slight honeyed note on the nose gives richness to new season nectarine and Meyer lemon with background oyster shell aromatics. This is a beautifully fruit-driven wine that is saturated with white peach and nectarine from start to finish. A subtle build of citrus acidity works well on the mid-palate with an understated creaminess and flashes of flint. With impressive length to finish this is a wine that will develop well over the next 5+ years. CLUB HIGHLIGHTS Club of Woodend

The Plaster House inspires Rotary Woodend One of our guest speakers in August was Sarah Rejman from The Plaster House. Started in 2008 and located in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The Plaster House provides a unique and loving home away from home for children receiving pre- and post-operative care and rehabilitation for a surgically correctable disability. In Tanzania, children with correctable disabilities are often left without treatment. As well as providing life changing surgery, The Plaster House’s outreach program aims to educate local communities that children with disabilities should not be hidden from view and that they can play a vital part in community life. ‘This was a great lesson in the difference that we can all make to impact the lives of others’ said Tony Waters, president of Rotary Woodend. ‘Sarah has been speaking to Rotary groups all around Victoria and as a club we were delighted to hear her inspirational story’. If you would like to learn more about The Plaster House or to donate to their work, please visit- www.theplasterhouse.org.
Passionate about visual arts and crafts? Then the Woodend Art Group (WAG) could well be perfect for you! Congratulations to three recent prizewinning WAG members: Kathy Medbury—winner Best in Show, 33rd Annual Sunbury Art Show; Helen Miles—winner Best Acrylic and Packer’s Prize, Kilmore Art Expo; and Julie Chandler—winner Hairy Arch Prize, Trentham. A reminder of the remaining two Winter Workshops: Hand-sculpting clay artist Sam Varian engages her intuitive teaching process for making figurative and animal clay sculptures—Saturday 18th August; and Victorian Felt Makers and international Felt Makers member Christina Kent shares her exploration of felting using a variety of dyed wool, silk and natural fibres—Saturday 25th August. A diary note! From 3rd to 6th November the Annual Art Exhibition will be held in the WAG club rooms. It is never too late for members to paint up a storm and exhibit in the show as a celebration of the ending of an exciting art-full year. Don’t forget the current group of classes featuring: painting with Daniel Butterworth; printmaking with Marysia; understanding the visual language of abstraction with Michael Berry; and Folio Club for students. The portrait painting group meets on Wednesday afternoons and life drawing sessions with Amanda Candusio are held when the numbers demand. Further information: www.woodendartgroup.org.au. There were many smiles and lots of fun and laughter at the annual Woodend fundraising luncheon on Sunday 12th August. This year, the funds raised were donated to the Woodend Men’s Shed Rotarians cooked up a storm of yummy food and amazing sweets for the 64 attendees. Local businesses and individuals were very generous in donating prizes for the raffle and silent auctions. Bill Hebb provided an overview of the activities of the Woodend Men’s Shed and thanked Rotary for organising the luncheon and all those present for supporting the fundraising efforts. An outdoor table, constructed by the Men’s Shed was one of the most popular auction items and was delivered to the highest bidder the same afternoon. Woodend Rotary has hosted an annual fundraising lunch for 11 years and has donated over $30,000 to support many local groups. Have you ever wondered about the origin of the name of Anslow Street? After William Swann Urquhart (for whom Urquhart Street is named) surveyed the town of Woodend in 1851, he was ordered in early 1852 to lay out half acre lots within the town, setting out the streets. He decided to name one of them after William Warner Anslow. William Warner Anslow was born in 1826 at Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, England. He married Peninnah Long on July 11, 1848 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, and shortly after, the young couple emigrated to Melbourne. On 1st January 1851 he was appointed as a 3rd class clerk in the Surveyor General's Office at a salary of £100 per annum. This is where he and Urquhart, also working for the Surveyor General’s Office, came into contact. With the discovery of gold, many of the employees deserted for the goldfields, leaving the Surveyor General’s Office with so few employees that it could barely function. Worried that those few remaining would also desert, the Government offered William Anslow a 100% Increase in his salary, recommended 8th January 1852. Having recently become a father in October 1851, he agreed, and his daughter, Peninnah, was baptised on 1st February 1852 at St Stephen’s 28
Anglican Church, Richmond. Sadly little Peninnah died shortly after and when another daughter was born later that year, as was the custom then, she was given the same name. Two more children followed but only one, George, survived to adulthood. In November 1859, William Anslow was no longer working for the Government and had applied for and received an Auctioneer’s Licence. By 1865 Anslow had moved his family to Clermont, Queensland, perhaps hoping the warmer climate would check the disease that was slowly killing him. Here he continued as an Auctioneer and was appointed as a Justice of the Peace. In January 1869 he finally succumbed to Consumption at only 44 years of age, leaving a widow and a 15 year old son. William Warner Anslow is buried in the South Rockhampton Cemetery, Queensland. His son George also died young, aged 4, of Typhoid. William’s grandson, Guy Warner Anslow worked as an Oyster Merchant before serving in World War I, and survived until his 66th year.

September Working Bee: 23 September This month, join our working bee in the Quarry Road Rail Reserve - right in time for wildflower season! Grant Success: Flint Hill Willow Removal We are pleased to share that we have been successful in obtaining a Victorian Landcare Grant to remove of woody weeds – particularly Willow, Hawthorn and Blackberry – from a very significant stand of remnant Black Gums on Five Mile Creek where it passes through Flint Hill, a private property in Woodend. These weeds are currently threatening the creek environment downstream and restricting regeneration of the Black Gums. We are looking forward to working with the landholders on this project. VALE LAURIE O’BRIEN
Laurie “Banker” O’Brien, stalwart of the Woodend CFA and of the Woodend Bowling Club, passed on 6 August, leaving the members of each of those organisations, and the wider Woodend community, very, very saddened. Laurie’s funeral at St Ambrose Church on 15 August was attended by over 200 mourners. Laurie joined the Woodend CFA as an 18 year old, in 1953, remaining an active fire-fighter for many years. In his younger years, Laurie’s Woodend CFA running team was successful around the state, enjoying its first ever State Championship in 1958. And more significantly, Laurie was made an Honorary Life Member of the Royal Children’s Hospital in 1976, for his part as a local CFA’S member in raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to the hospital’s Good Friday Appeal. Laurie became a bowler in 1992, and a Pennant Premiership player five years later, the Woodend Bowling Club’s Club Champion in 2001, and its President from 2000 to 2007. He played 394 Pennant matches for the Club. As befitted a retired long-term officer of the State Savings and Commonwealth Banks, he was a much-respected Club Treasurer for many years and remained so at his passing. No job at the Club was too menial for Laurie, whether it was a working bee, green maintenance, or stocking and managing its bar. Laurie O’Brien was a Life Member of the Woodend CFA, the Woodend Bowling Club and the Woodend Football and Netball Club. He will be sorely missed.
Time to start your presummer clean up Now that the weather is starting to improve, people are beginning to venture outdoors more often, especially into the garden and other areas on larger properties. So, NOW is the time to start preparing to reduce the risks of fire danger to you, your family and your property.
Why you should clean up The ferocity of a fire depends on a number of factors, including the weather, ground slope and especially the amount of ‘fuel’ on and around your house or property. Fuel is the only factor that you can alter before an unplanned fire starts. Fuel reduction is therefore one of the most important preventions you can undertake, with the most effective methods including mowing, raking, slashing and burning. Clearing volatile fuels such as grass, undergrowth, fallen leaves, bark, dead branches and twigs will lower the intensity of a fire. The Woodend CFA is a 100% volunteer emergency service, committed to Creating a Safer Community. If you are interested in joining the other great CFA volunteers in the Woodend community, please get in touch. Girl’s Football Alive and Well … The Woodend Junior Football Netball Club has been overwhelmed by the growth and interest shown in the development of Girl’s / Youth Football. When the club put out an expression of interest in early May, 21 girls attended the very first training session. Since then, our list has grown to almost 50 girls ranging from 10 to 17 years of age coming along to give football a go.
30
As the current Junior football/netball season comes to a close, the club will continue to be active in the development of girl’s football over the spring/summer. The club is aiming for three teams for season 2019, an Under 13 - Under 15, and a Youth Under 18 team. So, if you are a budding footballer, or have a daughter/niece/cousin/friend who is keen to have a kick, learn some new skills, play in a team and is looking for fun, friendship and laughter,
then come along and see what it’s all about!! Training is currently held on Wednesdays and Fridays at Racecourse Reserve, Buffalo Stadium from 5:15— 6:15pm. If you would like further information, please contact the club’s Girls’ Football Coordinator, June Gladman at gladman.june@gmail.com. Play Bowls month is coming in October Last year, the Woodend Bowling Club took part in Bowls Victoria’s ‘Play Bowls Month’, and it was a great success. So much so that we are involved again this year with a range of FREE events for our community to come and enjoy during the month of October. The highlight of last year was the ‘Battle of the Sports Clubs Under Lights’, which saw ten teams from local sports clubs competing in a round robin event that was eventually won by the Woodend Masters Football Club. It was such a success that this year we are refining the format of our Play Bowls Month to include several more Battles for local organisations and businesses.
You are invited to enter a team!
We are planning to conduct a number of Battles Under Lights on Friday nights. As well as the BATTLE OF THE SPORTS CLUBS’ we plan to hold: • Battle of the Woodend Businesses • Battle of the Woodend Tradies • Battle of the Woodend Health Services • Or is there a battle you can think of? We are inviting all members of our community to enter and play a social round robin event to see which organisation is the best at bowls in Woodend. All you have to do is organise a team of four and we will supply everything else... the bowls, the opponents and even a sausage sizzle. Plus, you will be able to enjoy our bar facilities at famous low Crackerjack bowls club prices! Bowls is an easy game to pick up if you have never played before, and is perfect for players of all ages, genders and abilities. So, pick a mixed team if you wish. Depending on the number of entries, you may be able to enter more than one team. And your supporters and spectators are more than welcome to come and cheer you along. We will also be holding several ‘Come and Try Coffee and Biscuit Social Bowls’ to introduce community members to the club and the game.
And every event is FREE!
We will include more details and dates for each event in next month’s New Woodend Star. To find out more please contact Woodend Bowling Club President Mike Dornau (email: mike@dornau.com.au or call 0409 093 935). SUBMITTED BY MIKE DORNAU, PRESIDENT WOODEND BOWLING CLUB INC

Sacred Heart College - caring for the environment In the early hours of Saturday 25 August, a group of passionate Sacred Heart College Biology students will venture out into the Wombat State Forest in a unique citizen science project. These students have been involved in the development of a possum-monitoring program within the Macedon Ranges, in partnership with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council. Sacred Heart College will build and install possum boxes and camera traps in local reserves and parks around the Macedon end of the Wombat State Forest. The aim is to start to map the distribution and health of the much under-studied feathertail gliders in our region. These beautiful, mousesized glider possums are difficult to find, due their size and their nocturnal behaviours, and research into their populations is limited. The project will be unique in Australia and will add to national data on species health. The students, led by teacher and ecologist Mr Peter Webb, will be installing possum boxes at six sites within the forest, and hope to raise awareness regarding the constantly decreasing number of feathertail gliders around the Macedon Ranges. It is hoped that the observations gained through this project will assist
Biology students Regan (Year 12) and Emily (Year 11) with the possum boxes, which will soon be located in the Wombat State Forest
conservationists Australia-wide in their efforts to save the feathertail glider. The College will also work with the Council on a project to monitor and map Phascogales. This elusive and endangered species is spread throughout the Ranges and, although not technically a possum, uses hollows and boxes in the same way that possums do, making it a great addition to the school’s monitoring program.
