It is encouraged for children to bring their own lolly bags.

The New Woodend Star • October 2015

Rotary President Grant Hocking invites everyone to dress up and join in the fun of Halloween. “We raise funds through a variety of activities for our projects at local, national and international levels. Woodend Rotary takes pride in our community involvement, The Halloween Party is our way of thanking the locals who support our various activities though out the year” said Grant. Rotary plans to make this year’s event even better than before with more

lollies, sausages and entertainment with a roaming clown, magic and activities. There is a great level of support from the community and local business with sponsorship this year from Fairhurst Conveyancing, Newrap costumes, Macedon Ranges Shire Council Blackbird Cakes and Collier Office and Business Assist. Budburst has a new name Macedon Ranges winegrowers are celebrating 25 years of the Budburst Festival on 14 and 15 November with a new name and a new look. Everyone is invited to the Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Festival. “The region is Australia’s coolest cool climate region, producing outstanding cool climate wines, so Macedon Ranges deserves to be in the headline,” says Marilyn Frederickson from the Macedon Ranges Vignerons Association and owner of Rowanston on the Track. “We have loved welcoming visitors to our cellar doors over the last 25 years and we are looking forward to celebrating this milestone with everyone in November.” This year 16 venues will host 30 wineries. There will be more than 100 exceptional wines for tasting, some that can only be sourced at the cellar door. Delicious food will be paired with the wines on offer. Expect to see special guests and, as always, local chefs in some of the region’s best restaurants will be holding celebration dinners. The Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Festival offers wine enthusiasts a personalised experience at the region’s cellar doors, tasting new and exclusive wines and learning first hand each wine and winemaker’s story. It is the perfect

opportunity to take a break from the hectic pace of spring, take a deep breath and enjoy the gentle art of winemaking. Book your Weekend Wineries Pass for just $15, which includes a commemorative tasting glass. This festival is supported by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council. Mr Barry Meldrum, President, Woodend RSL SubBranch thanked the many sponsors and supporters. The laying of wreaths and poppies was accompanied by Dr. Frank Donovan singing ‘The Band Played Waltzing Matilda’. The memorial has cost approximately $120,000 in direct funds, ‘in-kind’ support and donations from many organisations and individuals. To complete the project, the RSL has invited sponsors for three proposed granite seats ($2000 each) and engraved pavers ($100 each). Woodend Rotary Club have already committed to sponsor one of the seats. Willing donors can contact the RSL on 5427 3122 or email woodrsl@impulse.net.au. Submitted by Peter Whitelaw

Ride for Sun to Wind

Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group is on a mission to inform the government and the community about renewable energy. It also likes to celebrate with the community and on Saturday 31 October there will be a bike ride to do that. The MRSG is working on a number of projects including a large solar installation at the Black Forest Timber Mill and a community wind power project. President Ralf Thesing said: “We believe it is important to get these projects moving along because climate change is upon us and action is needed now. A bike ride is a great way for our community to express its support for these initiatives.” The bike ride will begin at the Black Forest Timber Mill and travel to the site of the proposed community wind farm nearby. MRSG member Alastair Fleming says: “We will be riding from the sun to the wind.” The 15km round trip will finish back at the Mill where delicious, sustainable vegetarian food, prepared and made by the Macedon Ranges Vegetarian Eating Group (MR VEG), will be served. “This ride will become an annual event because the first ever ride last year was so popular.” says Liz Wilson, event coordinator. It is a family event however the organisers stress that children and adults alike should do some training beforehand and to use sturdy mountain bikes or similar. The ride requires many volunteers to help make it run smoothly so if you can help please call the number below. There will be markers on the road to show riders how far they are from the site especially at the 1 km and 2 km points to give them the sense of distance of the wind farm to any existing dwellings. New legislation, yet to be put in place, will allow a 1 km limit for dwellings of people who live in close proximity to the wind farm site.

Golden Jubilee Celebration at St Ambrose Catholic Church Sister Virginia Mahony RSC celebrated her Golden Jubilee as a Sister of Charity, Australia, 50 years after taking her final vows in 1965. On Sunday 23 August, Mass was celebrated by Father Martin Fleming Parish Priest of the St Ambrose community before a crowd of over 250 people. Sister Virginia renewed her vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience to God witnessed by Sister Margaret Bernie and all present in the church. The attendance in the church consisted of Sister Virginia’s large family, many Sisters of Charity including Sr. Josephine Carrell 97 years old, many parishioners and nonparishioners from Woodend and district. Sister Virginia’s life before coming to Woodend, saw her teaching in primary schools as well as being Principal at Oak Park, Airport West, Eltham and Diamond Creek. Many of her past students came to the celebration. Before coming to Woodend, Sr. Virginia identified a specific need for grief counselling and established the “Sisters of Charity Outreach”. This was based out of St. Vincent’s Private Hospital in Melbourne and in collaboration with St Vincent’s Hospital and Caritas Christi Hospice and has now been amalgamated into Monash and other places. During the late 1980s her parish work took Sr. Virginia to Bonnyrigg in Sydney’s west where she assisted migrant families.

From 1996 to 1997 her Ministry was as a Pastoral Associate in the parish of Woodend. Those years formed the basis of her current connection to Woodend. In 2007 Sr. Virginia returned to Woodend in a Rural Ministry which focuses on a pastoral response to an evident gap in society’s service provision for people who never have a holiday or indeed a break of any kind. Rural Ministry is a response to all sorts of needs, in today’s communities.

Sr. Virginia receiving a flowering Daphne from Fr. Martin Fleming at the end of the formalities.

After the celebrations in the church, most attended a “High Tea” served in the nearby parish hall and Sr. Virginia cut a beautiful cake decorated made by Alanah Day, a year 11 student at nearby Sacred Heart College. The Sisters of Charity celebrated 175 years in Australia last year, and 200 years since the Order was founded in Ireland by Mary Akenhead. We know that Sr. Virginia was most appreciative of all the preparation that went into making this auspicious occasion such a wonderful day. Local Venturers Triumph

Three local Venturers are among Victoria’s top Scouts. On Saturday 19 September they travelled to Government House and were presented with their Queen’s Scout award by the Honourable Linda Dessau AM (Governor of Victoria).

Darcy, Hamish and Tanne met with the Honourable Linda Dessau AM, Governor of Victoria, after receiving their awards

Only 75 Venturers (aged 14-17) across Victoria met the requirements of the Queen’s Scout award in 2015. All work had to be completed before the Venturers turned 18; this was like taking on a second VCE for busy secondary students in their final years at school. This year three members of the Macedon Ranges Venturer Unit (MRVU) spent hundreds of hours of endeavour in areas such as service to community, leadership

development, personal growth and outdoor activities. Our local achievers are: Hamish Beshara (1st Macedon), Tanne Urie (1st Woodend) and Darcy Williamson (1st Woodend). A few of the highlights of their Queen’s Scout work include: leading a five night hike, being part of a five day canoe trip, re-landscaping the area around 1st Woodend’s Log Cabin, designing and building a small foundry, and investigating cheese making. “You are only limited by your imagination as to what activities you can use towards your Queen’s Scout. It really teaches you to prioritise and organise your time so that you can fit it all around your VCE commitments,” said Darcy. “It also gives you the opportunity to form new and lasting friendships along the way.” All three Queen’s Scouts would like to thank their Venturer Leaders and community members for the support and guidance given to them during their Queen’s Scout journey. If you think that your child would enjoy the challenges of scouting at any age - Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers or Rovers - please call or text Leisa (0429 331 695). The New Woodend Star is happy to congratulate Kathy Mexted on compiling her stories into a small book called ‘Ride-on Mowers’. When she began her Diploma of Professional Writing & Editing in 2008, it was suggested Kathy contribute to The New Woodend Star. What ensued was two and half years worth of 300 word stories about life in the local area; the most endearing being the ride-on mowers story. (see below) The 91-page book of stories and photos is available from New Leaves Bookshop in Woodend for $20. Ride-on Mowers Ever wondered why there are so many mothers piloting rideon mowers in the district? Do you think it’s because the grass needs cutting? No. Because the men are too busy to do it? Not usually. It’s the Great Escape. The ride-on mower is the ONE PLACE inside the front gate (and I include the bathroom in this), where the frazzled mother can get away from the husband, the kids, the jobs, the everything. You see, when the kids are older, she can banish them to parts various and escape to the garden for an hour or two and trim a few roses. But with little kids, there is no such luxury. They follow her everywhere. Calling her name. Demanding to know her every move, and to be part of it. Upending the bucket, getting a prickle in their foot, throwing things at each other; totally unable to tolerate her lack of attention to them. These are precious moments, but sometimes... The ride-on mower fixes all that. It’s a refuge. A time to think, to compose a song, to contemplate the next move, or movie. Round and round, up and down she goes - cleaning up anything in her wake; sticks, snakes, the odd party-goer that never went home. Nobody is allowed within coo-ee of the menacing beast. They stand on the verandah and shout things at her, but she just mouths “I can’t hear you” while pointing to her ear muffs and waving them back inside. The results are outstanding. It’s maximum effect for minimum input and the best part is that, unlike the kitchen, the job stays done for at least a week. While the rest of the world just sees ‘A Mother on a Mower’, in reality she has just spent an hour in Splendid Isolation. Submitted by A. Hearn

Joey Scouts

it's your Hop into Scouting! Our aim is to provide a safe, fun, learning environment for young boys and girls, from 6 to 7 1/2 years old, and to be the very first link in a path to adventure and fulfilment through Scouting. Joey Scouts experience the world around themselves, by doing, rather than just being taught. They develop an understanding of the impact of our modern world, and themselves, on the environment. Joey Scouts are encouraged to express themselves creatively, through games, stories and craft activities. Building monsters and spaceships from scrap items, growing plants from seedlings or singing songs together all develop a strong sense of belonging.

Claiming losses against your income Case Study Frank is a lawyer in the city who has an adjusted taxable income of $290,000 a year. His wife Margaret is an office manager with an income of $39,000. They run a beef cattle farming operation in partnership which is currently running at a loss of $30,000 a year. The value of the land where they operate their farming business is $600,000. They are trying to work out whether they can claim their farming losses against their employment income. Items to consider Provided adjusted taxable income is less than $250,000, one of the four following tests must also be passed in order to offset business losses: -

Land value for business operations being over $500,000; Gross sales turnover more than $20,000 p.a.; Profit in three of the last five years including the current year; Other business assets with a value over $100,000

Margaret is able to offset her 50% of the farming losses reducing her taxable income to $24,000, as her income from other sources is less than $40,000. However Frank is over the $250,000 threshold and therefore he has to carry forward his share of the farming losses until a year in which his income is less than the threshold. Should you wish to discuss further please feel free to contact Andrew Marshall or Janine Orpwood on 5427 8100 for an initial consultation.

The Reverend Deacon Wendy Elson was recently inducted into the Uniting Church, Macedon Ranges Partnership in August. Rev. Elson's induction took place at Kyneton Uniting Church and was led by the Chairperson of the Port Phillip West Presbytery, Rev. Paul Blacker. The Rev. Mark Dunn delivered the sermon and the combined choir led by Rev. Dr. Darcy Wood provided musical performances. Rev. Elson will be living in Woodend and is the first of three new appointments the Uniting Church will be making in the partnership. The ministry appointments will be role based and Rev. Elson's primary role is to help the Church and the community to connect together. "This is an exciting new venture". Rev. Elson said. The partnership is an initiative of the Uniting Church and has seen twelve congregations, Romsey, Lancefield, Kyneton, Mia Mia, Metcalfe, Sutton Grange, Barfold, Tylden, Woodend, Mount Macedon, Riddells Creek and Gisborne, from across the Ranges combining their resources, skills and vision. Working together under one Co-ordinating Council, the Partnership members are excited by the idea of ministering within their communities as a combined effort. Wendy can be contacted on 54272761. Stepping stones for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects 1% of the population and which encompasses a broad range of conditions ranging from mild to very complex. A group of Masters occupational therapy students from Latrobe University in Bendigo were commissioned to undertake a project to identify Autism specific needs, challenges and opportunities in Central Victoria. Working together with Windarring and the Macedon Ranges Autism Network the students undertook a survey of clients, carers and support staff which provided useful insights for the students to base their findings. The students today presented their “Staff Resource Booklet for Autism Spectrum Disorder” which gives indepth recommendations for the type of services and the best method of service delivery for people affected by Autism. Recommendations include the development of individualized programs and goal setting, providing up to date training for staff and the value of additional allied health services. “Windarring is pleased to be able to say that we are well underway in implementing these recommendations, and

in particular we are working hard to provide vocational training and pathways for young people with Autism through our new ‘Windarring Works’ program currently under development” said Windarring CEO Chris O’Connor. “In addition to this we understand that housing and accommodation has become an emerging issue and we are developing a range of opportunities and supports for people to enjoy living in the community”. The presentation was also attended by Fiona Le Nepveu from the Macedon Ranges Autism Network which has contact with over 200 families. Fiona was pleased to have played a key role in the study and is excited to be able to share the findings throughout the professional network facilitated by the group. “This project has created a valuable link between people affected by an Autism Spectrum Disorder and service providers such as Windarring. We are excited to be able to work together to provide great outcomes for people with Autism in Central Victoria”, said Fiona, a comment which was backed up by Chris O’Connor. Submitted by N Barker

Once again Rotary had a busy month in September with participating in the Suicide Prevention walk, the opening of Woodend Avenue of Honour – Wall of Remembrance, great guest speakers at meetings and a visit to the Woodend Mens Shed. The walking group has also been active with attendance numbers increasing now the warmer weather has arrived. Last week we had a visit from Bronwyn Stephens from Melbourne talking about the World of Difference projects in Cambodia. We also had another visit from our Youth exchange student Isobel Langtry who will be heading to Germany next year. October activities; • Thursday 1st – Business training and Water tank project in Vanuatu by Allan Cann • Wednesday 7th – Visit to Yarra bend Rotary club • Saturday 10th – Shopping Tour • Thursday 15th – Visit to Woodend Heritage Society (Forrest St) • Thursday 22nd – Visit from District Governor • Saturday 31st – Halloween Community party – Childrens Park 5pm (see front page) All meetings are on Thursday nights from 6.45 pm and occur upstairs at the Victoria Hotel Woodend unless otherwise specified Fundraising Luncheon There was good attendance at the Woodend Rotary Luncheon at Woodend Lawn Bowls club on Sunday 30th to help Woodend Rotary raise funds for Youth Mental Health First Aid training. Fifty people turned out to support the event and were treated to champagne, savoury and sweet food served during the afternoon. There were several raffle prizes donated by local business as well as several silent auction items including two nights in Queenscliff for two. Pauline Neil and Annie Rowland from the MRSC Youth Development Unit provided some background on the mental health issues in the Macedon Ranges and the Life 4 Life program. There was a lot of interest in the program and discussion with two teens from the Life for Life crew. A great event which achieved the requirements to run two training sessions in conjunction with MRSC in the future. It’s a new term with new activities and many old favourites. Do check out our brochure contained in this edition. This month I’m going to use our column space to talk about another passion of mine; developing community leadership. As some of you may be aware I have been participating in the Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program this year. This was made possible by a small sponsorship from my workplace with me paying the remainder of the fees. The idea germinated because a previous Chair of our committee completed the program in 2013 and spoke so highly of it. “The LMCLP gave me a greater understanding of regional diversity, issues and resources - there was so much information provided. The program reinforced the strength of community especially when visiting all the different regions. The opportunity for personal reflection and growth was invaluable and my confidence grew enormously. It really brought home the importance of networking. It strengthened my leadership skills and my enthusiasm to continue on community boards.” Janet Pearce LMCLP 2013 Luke Spielvogel (LMCLP 2015) from the Hanging Rock Action Group stated “The Program has been amazing. With great practical workshops that develop real skills and

sharing this experience with some amazing regional leaders and the network those connections provide, I have learned so much. Most of all, hearing the stories; of the people we’ve met and of other participants, how they started and how they are being the change they want to see in their communities and workplaces.” I can say that while participating in this program I have had my horizons broadened, my assumptions challenged, my skill-set deepened and my passion for making change happen in society reignited. I have developed wonderful connections across the region, working with up to 24 other participants to learn, grow, develop and succeed. I have made friends with people I would never have had the chance to meet other than through the program, and I have gained a new perspective on my place in the fabric of my community and this region. This has been 10 months well spent. The lessons I have learned and the friendships I have made will last the rest of my life. Applications are open until October 31, 2015. There are some scholarships available too. If you want to know more visit www.cllm.org.au and go to the ‘How to Apply’ tag under the Leadership Program menu. I’m also very happy to chat with you about my experiences this year. See you soon at the House! Jill Scanlon – Coordinator

Woodend’s own Libby Nuttall was awarded the title in front of 150 people at the Gala Dinner

The award is huge recognition for the local mum, who just three years ago was a television reporter, and opened Change It Up Training in April 2014. She now employs six trainers who run 17 fitness and yoga classes a week throughout the Macedon Ranges. In accepting the award, Mrs Nuttall talked about the reward and fulfillment she gets from being a personal trainer; “One day you’re helping a woman lose weight for her wedding, another day you’re helping someone get healthier to be able to get pregnant, or help someone get fitter to pass their Police force or Army fitness test.” She said. “I couldn’t have chosen a more rewarding career, so it’s amazing to be recognized for doing something I love so much.” She said. Hanging Rock heats up for spring As the weather warms up and works to upgrade barbecue facilities at Hanging Rock are now complete, Council encourages residents to pack the picnic basket and make a day of it at Hanging Rock. The ten new barbecues, which replace the previously coinoperated units, are free to use and available for casual use or group bookings. Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said the Rock is the perfect location for locals keen to explore our beautiful shire and discover what’s in their own backyard. “Hanging Rock is enjoying unprecedented popularity with over 20,000 more tourists visiting the site than three years ago and with the school holidays now on and summer just around the corner, it is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the many experiences on offer so close to home,” she said. Other recently completed works include upgrades to the main toilet block, including a new accessible toilet and a family-friendly toilet with baby change facilities. “The new free barbecues and improved toilet facilities, coupled with future plans to upgrade the visitor shelters, car parking and a range of other improvements will create more opportunities for visitors to enjoy time sightseeing, picnicking and bush walking,” she added. 2015 Seniors Festival:

October is your time to celebrate Macedon Ranges Shire Council is supporting a range of events throughout October as part of the 2015 Victorian Seniors Festival. This popular festival aims to encourage those aged 55 years and over to stay active and get involved in their community, and this year’s program offers an opportunity for seniors to do just that. Several local groups and clubs are offering ‘Come and Try’ days, where seniors will be encouraged to experiment with everything from bowls and book clubs, to scrabble and singing. There is also the opportunity to find out more about volunteering in the shire, and to meet the friendly members of local clubs such as the University of the Third Age (U3A) and Probus. For those seniors that prefer to indulge in the arts, the Kyneton Town Hall has several shows on offer, from risqué burlesque through to live jazz with Brendan Fitzgerald and his band bringing swinging tunes from the 50s and 60s to life. In highlighting the importance of health and wellbeing, Kyneton Toyota Sports & Aquatic Centre is offering free classes for all seniors during the month of October. This includes: • Gentle Aerobics • Heartmoves • Gentle Aqua • Strength for Health Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said the Seniors Festival is an important annual event, and Council’s program of local activities offers much for local community members. “This is a wonderful opportunity for older people in the community to experience something new, get to know other people and become involved in the arts and culture of the region,” she said. For details on events, phone 5422 0258 or visit mrsc.vic. gov.au/seniors or seniorsonline.vic.gov.au To book a free fitness class at Kyneton Toyota Sports & Aquatic Centre during October, contact Karyn Aumont on 5421 147 or email ksacrec@mrsc.vic.gov.au.

a messaage

from the Mayor You will probably think I am carrying on too much about this, but it is possibly one of the most important things you can do in October, if you have not already done so. The Minister for Planning has endorsed the Woodend Town Structure Plan for exhibition, and you as members of the Woodend community have the opportunity to comment until October 23rd. All residents should have received letters in the first week in September, and Council has held some drop-in sessions, and has scheduled a few more in October, at each of Woodend, Kyneton and Riddell's Creek Farmers' Markets. You can also contact planning staff at any time if you wish to discuss anything in the Structure Plans you are not sure about. The future of how Woodend will look, what character of housing fits well where, what types of industry and retail should be allowed, and how we restrict things that we do not think are right for Woodend all depends on you. Once it is in the planning scheme – what is made allowable or not allowable – it will not be able to be changed until the next review. Please take this opportunity – even if it is only to look at the part of the plan dealing with where you live, or shop, or work – to see if you think the efforts you put in to tell Council what you wanted for Woodend have been translated into this document. Please let us know both the things you like, as well as what you don’t like. Speak up now. I will be away in the first half of October, but happy to take your calls from 13th of October.

Celebrate National Bird Week

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is celebrating National Bird Week with a series of exciting, inspiring and free familyfriendly events to be held during October. On Saturday 17 October the focus is on birds of prey in the region, with a special insight into the Powerful Owl in a Raptors of the Macedon Ranges presentation. This fascinating predatory bird is the largest of the owl species in Australia, and hunts for possums and gliders over large home ranges. The presentation will be held from 2pm–4.30pm at the Norma Richardson Hall, 15 Buckland Street, Woodend. On Thursday 22 October, well-known bird guru and editor of BirdLife Australia Magazine, Sean Dooley, will share his knowledge on extinction at the Mega Fauna Festival. Find out what birds are under threat locally, those that are now extinct, and why we need to prevent further extinctions during this discussion. The session will be held from 6pm–7.30pm at the Mechanics Institute, 140 High Street, Lancefield. Another activity that the entire family can get involved in is BirdLife Australia’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count. Building on the success of the last year’s count, which saw more than 5,000 individual birds observed and more than 130 bird species recorded locally, participants are encouraged to take individual counts of birds in their green patch of choice any time from Monday 19 October to Sunday 25 October. Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said residents in Macedon Ranges are fortunate to have an abundance of bird life in their backyards, and Bird Week is a great excuse to get outdoors and enjoy it. “Bird Week is a great initiative – it encourages people to learn more about their local environment and the bird species that call it home. There’s even an Aussie Bird Count app that you can download to your smartphone and track live statistics and information about the count as it happens,” she said. For details on how you can get involved in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, visit aussiebirdcount.org.au For further information on the Raptors of the Macedon Ranges and Mega Fauna Festival or to book, contact William Terry on 5421 9674 or wterry@mrsc.vic.gov.au Submitted by E. Landowners urged to doublecheck before removing native vegetation

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is reminding landowners to check with Council to find out if a planning permit is required before removing native vegetation located on their property. Council’s Director Planning & Environment, Sophie Segafredo said there are specific rules and regulations around native vegetation removal that are designed to safeguard our natural environment. “Protecting our natural environment is everyone’s responsibility and these provisions are in place to protect biodiversity, water quality and native wildlife habitats,” she said. Native vegetation includes trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses that are local to Victoria, including areas of bushland with trees, scattered paddock trees and treeless areas of scrub or grassland. In most cases a planning permit is required to remove, destroy or lop native vegetation. It is the responsibility of the landowner to check if a permit is required before commencing any works or engaging a private contractor to complete the works. “Our planning department can assist you if you are unsure whether you have native vegetation on your property and need a permit for its removal. Contacting us before works commence could save you time and money down the track,” she said. For more information, or if you suspect someone is removing vegetation from their property illegally, contact Council’s Planning Department on 5422 0333. Submitted by E.McCormick for M.R.S.C.

October 2015 Q Fever – are you at risk? Koori Night Market

Q Fever is a flu like disease carried by cattle, sheep and goats. The disease is transmissible to humans through contact with unpasteurized milk, faeces, urine or placenta of infected animals. People who work with livestock have the greatest risk of being exposed to the disease. These include farmers, abattoir workers, meat inspectors, vets, livestock carriers and animal handlers. Disease symptoms are rare in animals but in humans the symptoms can include fever, headaches, joint pain, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, light sensitivity and weight loss. Some people go on to have chronic Q fever which can last for years and includes fatigue, muscle pain, headaches, fever and sometimes depression. Q fever can be treated with antibiotics but the best option for people who handle farm animals is prevention in the form of immunisation. Brooke Street offers the Q fever vaccination and the process involves two visits seven days apart. In the first consult the GP will order a blood test and put a small amount of vaccine just under the skin, this is to see if you may have been exposed to Q fever in the past. The second visit is to see if there is a small reaction on the skin where the initial test was done and then proceed to vaccination if indicated. Q fever vaccine is kept on site and the cost is $150 (including skin test) plus the cost of GP consultations (initial consult $80, follow up consult $50). Often this can be claimed through an employer or at tax time. Recently an excellent segment on Q fever was done by Landline on the ABC and can be viewed on YouTube via the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGpFL3wT UFs Brooke St. Medical Centre – tel. Woodend Landcare

A shout out to the local who not only complimented the Thursday Crew on their handiwork recently but returned on foot from her shopping trip with an enormous haul of goodies from Bourkie’s bakery for their morning tea. The crew thank you very much for your thoughtfulness and positive feedback. Our stall at the Farmers Market on 5 September was non-stop all morning as we gave away 250 black gums. The giveaway, together with the production of a beautiful flyer, was part of a Bjarne K Dahl trust grant to promote and protect the iconic eucalyptus aggregata. Loads of people also attended an interesting talk on local plants by Robin Baker, with a bit of Q&A, at the Woodend Library. We concluded Landcare week on 12 September when over 30 people took part in our planting morning at the Children’s Park. Woodend Guides did a power of work on the main jute area on the north bank. We hope people will appreciate the improvements in this well-frequented zone and keep off the plantings. Don’t forget our feathered friends in Bird Week (October 19–25). We are keen for people to take part in the bird survey again, mapping sightings of native and introduced birds. Remember to include your hopefully declining local sightings of Indian mynas for us at MRIMAG. Go to the Aussie Backyard Bird Count website for more information.

Residents urged to ensure properties are fire ready

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is encouraging residents to clean up their properties earlier this year in preparation for an earlier and longer fire season. To assist property owners to do this, during the month of October burning off restrictions under Council’s Local Law will be lifted for those residents living on land less than 4,000 square metres (one acre). Council’s Director Assets and Operations, Dale Thornton said that it’s important that everyone starts to prepare early as authorities are predicting a prolonged and dry fire season. “You can significantly help to reduce the risk of fire to our community by cleaning up around your property and removing fine fuels such as long grass, weeds, twigs and leaves,” he said. Residents must ensure that when burning off they do not create a nuisance for their neighbours and should continue to monitor any burn-off for at least seven days to ensure it is fully extinguished. Large loads of green waste (excluding noxious weeds) can also be taken and tipped for free at Council’s transfer stations. Council will also be getting its own house in order for the fire season by reducing fire hazards on Councilmanaged roadsides and properties in October—a month earlier than usual. “With nearly 1,700 km of Council-managed roads in the shire, we must prioritise our roadside slashing programs to target high traffic roads near grasslands and township boundaries. “We are planning to initially focus on areas in the north and east of the shire that are known to dry out the quickest and we will monitor regrowth carefully over the fire season,” Mr Thornton said. Council’s Fire Management Officer will also begin inspecting private properties for fire risk in mid-October, which is earlier than usual, and Fire Prevention Notices will be issued to those properties that pose a serious fire risk to their neighbourhood. Horse owners and equine businesses in the shire are also encouraged to attend a free workshop at the Woodend Community Centre on Thursday 8 October at 7pm to hear from Lancefield Equine Clinic’s agronomist, James Almond and Council’s Fire Management team about how to create a safer fire environment for horses, including pasture management. To book, contact 5421 9616 or email ecodevadmin@mrsc.vic.gov.au For more information about preparing your property, including burning off and transfer station opening hours and locations, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/fireready or contact Council on 5422 0333.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council will roll out its annual elm tree treatment program in the coming weeks as part of an annual management program to protect the shire’s 2,700 elm trees from the Elm Leaf Beetle. The Elm Leaf Beetle feeds on the leaves of elm trees and defoliates mature trees. Trees that have been attacked present a distinctive round hole in their leaves and repeated infestations can seriously weaken trees. While it is impossible to eradicate the beetle, Council has developed a preventative management program to protect significant stands of elms, predominantly in parks and avenues. Treatment generally occurs from September to November and methods include spraying, and injecting the soil around the root zone of the tree with low toxicity insecticide. This safe and effective method of treating large trees tends to protect them for more than one season. Council is a member of Friends of the Elms Inc (FOTE), which maintains a state-wide elm register and helps local government and other bodies to manage threats to elm trees. Residents with elm trees on their properties are strongly encouraged to register their trees by contacting FOTE via foteinc@hotmail.com or 0409 870 860. Submitted by E McCormick for M.R.S.C.

Help Protect Our Native Birds!

Indian Mynas are an invasive and aggressive pest species. They are intelligent and opportunistic and they will use superior numbers to occupy and defend territory. During breeding season, they seek out nesting hollows which they take over from native birds and other animals. Indian mynas destroy the eggs and chicks of other birds or build their own nest on top and smother what is under them. Macedon Ranges Indian Myna Action Group (MRIMAG) has the aim of reducing the impact of Indian Mynas on native birds and other animals. What began as a small project for Woodend Landcare two years ago has now spread across the entire shire, involving every town. Although the program has been a huge success there is still more that needs to be done. MRIMAG would like YOU to take action! Here are six things you can do in your backyard to help discourage Indian mynas and reduce their feeding and breeding opportunities. • Deprive mynas access to chook food. Seal bins and runs. • Feed pets inside, or put pet food inside during the day. Clean up left overs afterwards. • Cover compost bins. • Block holes in roofs or eaves to stop mynas nesting. • Plant natives to encourage native wildlife. • Become a trapper by contacting Ron Fink on 0407661129 or woodend58@hotmail.com. Gisborne Singers’ present ‘The Armed Man’

The Gisborne Singers are collaborating with the Ballarat Choral Society for their next production- ‘The Armed Man—A Mass for Peace’ to form an 80 person choir, accompanied by 20 professional musicians. This is to be performed at Ballarat on Sunday November 15 and at Woodend on Sunday November 22 (St Ambrose Church Hall ). Both performances commence at 3 p.m. This is a stunning work by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. He charts the growing menace of a descent into war and ends with a hope for peace. All the innocent victims of war are commemorated in its text regardless of race or creed. It is an exciting work both to sing and hear in concert. The work is presented in recognition of the Gallipoli landings in 1915. The Armed Man was commissioned by the Royal Armouries in Great Britain to mark the transition from one millennium to another. It reflects the passing of ”The most war-torn and destructive century in human history” and looks forward in hope to a more peaceful future. It was first performed in the year 2000.

It is essentially an anti-war composition based on the Catholic Mass combined with other texts including the fifteenth century French folk song ‘L’Homme arme’, the Islamic Call to Prayers (Adhaan), excerpts from the Mahabharata, as well as from the writings of Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Sankichi Toge. During the singing, we are considering projecting images of war photographs onto a screen behind the choir. We are also considering reading messages from soldiers in the various war zones to their families at home in Australia. We hope to use local material for both ideas. Stephen Brockman (Musical Director of the Gisborne Singers) has said he would be very grateful if your readers could help us to assemble photos, letters and memorabilia for this presentation. Winter Basketball Winners

What an amazing winter Woodend basketball has had! While the temperatures have been so low, some remarkable basketball highs have been achieved by local players. In July, Woodend local Nick Grantham was in the starting five playing for the Country Victoria team in the Under 16 Men’s Australian Championships in Tasmania. The team came 6th. Nick recently attended trials for the U16 Men’s Australian team. Our younger players are also doing amazing things: six local Under 12 Woodend Hawks players were selected for Basketball Victoria Country’s Jamboree in addition to the eight Under 14 Macedon Ranges players selected for the BVC Academy program. It was also terrific to see so many Grade 5 and 6 players from the local competition and Woodend Hawks represent their schools in the Cobaw Interschool Basketball competition. Congratulations to the two Woodend schools (pictured) for taking out the comp, Woodend Primary won the boys and St Ambrose won the girls.

The Summer Season will kick off in Term 4. We are very pleased to be reintroducing an Upper Primary Boys competition and we will continue the very successful Aussie Hoops program for our youngest players - moving the session to a 60 minute timeslot so the skills and games are all on the same day! What’s on offer for Summer basketball? Aussie Hoops skills program: Thursdays - Girls (4-5) Boys (5-6) Competitions available (suitable for beginners with training provided at all junior levels) • Lower Primary: U/ 10 Boys & Girls mixed competition • Upper Primary Boys: Grade 4, 5 & 6 competition • Upper Primary Girls: Grade 4, 5 & 6 competition • Secondary: Years 7, 8 & 9 Boys competition • Open Men • Open Women • All Abilities Visit www.macedonranges.basketball.net.au for more information. Daylight Saving - Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery Daylight Saving Time begins at 2am (AEST) on Sunday the 4th of October. When you change your clock you should also change your smoke alarm battery. The CFA recommends that all Victorians should replace your smoke alarm batteries around the time that you turn back your clocks for the end of daylight saving – which is NOW. The message is quite simple: only working smoke alarms save lives. If there’s no sound from your smoke alarm, there’s no warning. Remember, it is normally smoke, not flame or heat that kills the majority of fire victims. When asleep, our sense of smell is largely diminished, and we’re unlikely to smell smoke. The smoke may also put occupants into a deeper sleep, so a smoke alarm actually helps wake you. And, with all of the plastics, materials, electronics and chemicals around - house smoke can be extremely toxic. Here are some interesting home fire facts: • One in five Australians have experienced a fire in their homes • Research has shown that the absence of a smoke alarm can increase the possibility of a fatality by 60% • While 45% of properties visited had smoke alarms installed, 31% of those were not functioning with the batteries flat or even removed • About 64% of house fires were unintentionally lit • Around 56% of these started in the kitchen during cooking and a further 15% the result of electrical faults

• In more than 95% of metropolitan household fires someone was home at some stage during the fire To ensure you have a working smoke alarm: • Test it weekly by pushing the test button with a broom handle to make sure it beeps. • Dust the alarm with a vacuum cleaner brush. • Change the battery at least once a year. Now is the time to start reducing the risk of fire! The Fire Restriction period is not far away. In recent years we have experienced several consecutive extremely dangerous summers and this year will be no exception. In fact, with reasonable winter rains and strong spring growth, this year promises to be one of the most dangerous fire seasons for many years. NOW is the time to start preparing to reduce the risks of fire danger to you, your family and your property. The Macedon Ranges Shire has introduced specific new laws as to which properties are able to burn off, and how large your fire can be. Please check the Macedon Ranges Shire website before you burn. If you are allowed to burn off please make sure you do so safely. Remember, the Shire also offers a free green drop at Transfer Stations all year round. The free green waste service does not include all the types of green waste. It includes larger, woody items such as branches, leaf litter, lawn clippings and thicker prunings that can be turned into mulch. Once again, check out the Shire website. For further information contact Captain Mick Christie or 1st Lieutenant Mike Dornau at the Woodend CFA on 5427 2356, visit the station in Urquhart Street, follow us on Facebook or our website: www.woodendcfa.org. The Woodend CFA is a volunteer emergency service, committed to Creating Safer Communities. Submitted by 1st Lieutenant Mike Dornau, Woodend CFA

CARPENTRY

Paul Gaskin Infectious Diseases part 3:

Tetanus, Blood Poisoning and Polio

Tetanus, a deadly disease causing muscle spasms and breathing problems, can occur in compound fractures, animal bites, burns or any wounds contaminated with soil, horse manure or pieces of foreign objects. Often called lock jaw, it was mentioned in the 1857 Carlsruhe Police District Inspection, when describing Constable Sheehan's wound and the lack of adequate treatment. Horses were an integral part of daily life until cars took over, so Tetanus was a very real risk. The local paper told of Mrs. Maggie Junce, attacked by a rooster while collecting eggs. Her hand was badly lacerated and sadly days later the unfortunate woman died of lockjaw. The Woodend Star In 1925 reported that Mr. Harry Keating was suffering from tetanus after his accident. Tetanus toxoid vaccine, widely used to prevent tetanus from battle wounds was made avalable to civilians after the war in 1945. Doctors now routinely check whether a patient's tetanus vaccination is up to date, especially when presenting with a wound and so tetanus is now uncommon in Australia. Blood poisoning was a very real fear before the advent of antibiotics. Ellen Teresa Dullard, daughter of Mr E. Dullard aged 21, died from blood poisoning in 1902. The Woodend Star also reported the deaths from blood poisoning of Marcus Rolins who died after losing a finger in a machine at work in June 1926 and Reginald Gordon Keating, the son of George and Martha Keating who died, aged 41, in 1936. Another terrible disease was polio or infantile paralysis. Survivors were often left with twisted limbs and limited lung capacity; it was every parent's greatest dread. It's difficult now to imagine the fear that swept through Australian communities each time there was another epidemic. Thousands of children spent months in special isolation wards, unable to breathe outside the "iron lungs" that kept them alive. Between the 1930’s and 1960’s, 40,000 Australians contracted paralytic polio. Thanks to the Salk vaccine introduced in 1956, new cases of polio in Australia are rare. In 1997 Bev Watson, of Woodend, realised a life long dream when, after six years of hard work, she was awarded a Bachelor of Social Work degree. At the age of six, Bev contracted polio and could no longer walk without the aid of calipers and crutches, at a time when facilities for disabled people were unheard of. Bev, who still lives in Woodend, has spent her working life as a social worker and as an advocate for those with disabilities, whatever the cause. Although vaccination programs, beginning in the late 1950s, have prevented new infections in Australia, polio survivors form the largest single physical disability group in the country. Bev, like many of us, finds it incredible that some parents choose to put their children at risk by refusing to vaccinate them. Submitted by J. Williams
