Community invited to have a ‘ghoul-d’ time at Halloween party Don’t let the scariest night of the year pass you by. Dress up in your spookiest outfit and venture out – if you dare – to the biggest Halloween party in the Macedon Ranges as Woodend Rotary hosts it’s annual Halloween party Guests are warned: Don’t be caught dead without a costume! Dress-ups add to the fun and we’re talking anything from robes, capes and gowns to the dark, mysterious, spooky and gross. Woodend Rotary Club’s ghosts and ghouls will be serving scary snags, fairy floss, lollies and drinks while the kids go wild to some garishly live musical entertainment. They are simply dying to see you there! The party kicks off at 5.30 on Monday October 31 at Woodend Children’s Park, Nicholson Street Woodend Grant Hocking of Woodend Rotary founded this event in 2010 and continues coordinating it, “It’s fun to see our extended family of Woodend residents participate in costume.” This event is made possible by Woodend Rotary Club who take this opportunity to give thanks to the community for their on-going support and provide an event strengthens community ties. Since 2010 the party has attracted thousands of junior costume-clad revellers and their parents. “We hope to have even more families from across the Macedon Ranges come along and have a spook-tackularly good time” said Grant. Rotary organizes the party in an efoort to provide the Woodend area with a fun and safe atmosphere during Halloween and is offered as a safe alternative to the traditional neighbourhood trick or treating. Local non-profit organisations and businesses also support the event with food and financial support. Our major sponsor is Fairhurst Conveyancing of Woodend. An adult must remain with and supervise all children throughout the party. For more information contact Grant on 5427 1578. Submitted by A. Downie

Woodend to host Holgate Brewhouse Single Speed World mountain bike Championships Single speed mountain bikers will descend on Woodend from 21- 23 October 2016 for their annual World Championships. Russ Eckersley of Woodend Cycles said "this is much more than the usual one day mountain bike race typically held in this area". Around 400 riders representing 12 nations will travel to Woodend for a three day Carni-velo (Festival of the Bike) to celebrate riding and the humble one-speed bicycle.

On Saturday morning a group ride will depart from Buffalo Stadium following the back roads to Hanging Rock Reserve. While no roads will be closed, some delays can be expected. Events at Hanging Rock include live entertainment, bike shows and races for penny farthings, 16 inch bikes, kids and cyclocross. Everyone is welcome to spectate. Wombat State Forest is the venue for the world championship race on Sunday. The laid back and slightly rebellious attitude of single speeders will be expressed by the array of outrageous fancy dress items worn for the ‘official’ bike race. The Annie Ten Brink Memorial Yoga Scholarship The Australasian Yoga Institute is taking applications, for this our newest scholarship. If you have wanted to be a yoga teacher, then apply today. Annie (Annie Ten Brink 1924-2016) was a unique an valued figure in our community. She came to Woodend, from France in the 1950’s. It would have been like coming to the Wild West in comparison to Europe, but she loved it and stayed. We are the beneficiaries. It is our turn to give back. Annie taught French at Clyde (now called Baemar), hitching a ride from Woodend to and from the school with the SEC guys erecting the new electricity poles. She taught for 20 years at Assumption College in Kilmore, retiring some years ago. Throughout this illustrious teaching career she also accepted private students, not just teaching the locals, the seniors in every local high school came to her for “the edge” – that something that takes you to the next level. Annie also taught lead singers in The Australian Opera to speak French, she taught the pilots of the new planes who had to train in France… the list goes on. She was a lifetime member of our school. She started with us 39 years ago and was still coming to us to the end. In her memory and in her name, we at the Australasian Yoga Institute (Est.1976) have initiated a yoga scholarship, and we are giving those in the Macedon Ranges the first chance to apply. There is no age limit although it is not an easy course, so you need to really want to do it. It will take you 12 to 18 months part-time to complete. When you graduate you will be a trained and professional yoga teacher able to teach anywhere. The value of this scholarship is $3,650. Apply today. In the first instance, please contact the Director, Jahne HopeWilliams via yogafirst@netcon.net.au. For more information about The Australasian Yoga Institute, please go to www. yogabeautiful.com.au.

Australian Decorative & Fine Arts Society

Epidemic results in little-known art works Escaping the influenza epidemic in Sydney in 1900, Australian artist Tom Roberts headed to New Zealand, where he created some little-known masterpieces. Jane Vial, a specialist in early 20th Australasian art, spoke about ‘Tom Roberts’ Adventures in New Zealand’ at the 15 September ADFAS CV lecture at the Kyneton Town Hall. The October lecture will introduce UK art historian Mary Alexander to speak on ‘David Hockney: Mr & Mrs Clark – Fashion and Lifestyle Icons of the 1960s’. David Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. In his portraits of friends, lovers, and relatives he repeatedly returned to the same subjects, including fashion designers Celia Birtwell and Ossie Clark. Alexander’s lecture will explore Hockney’s famous painting, ‘Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy’ (1970-71), revealing the dramatic tragedy unfolding behind the cool and modernist interior in which the Clarks are represented. Although this is the last lecture for the year, the ADFAS CV program continues to the end of the year, with a speakers’ luncheon at Macedon Wine Room on October 6 when retired Woodend architect David Faggetter will speak about his unique experience developing an urban design around the ancient Oasis in Al Ain in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. A trip to Ballarat is planned on October 27 to view the Archibald Exhibition followed by the annual Sunset Party on December 8. If you are interested in any of these activities and would like to join ADFAS CV, email adfascenvic@gmail.com.au or ring Norma, 5427 4918.

Spring Concert The 2016 Spring concert has an Irish flavour. MITCH is proud to present an ‘Irish session’ featuring the wonderful Walsh’s – a family that can rightly claim three generations of local musicians who continue to celebrate the Irish traditions of their ancestors. Award winning Irish singer songwriter Darren ‘Gallie’ Gallagher will perform the second set. Gallie’s original songs contribute his own colour to a significantly rich canvas that echo the influence of legendary Irish forefathers such as Van Morrison, and extend a warm handshake to folk artists like Neil young and John Martyn. The young Musician for the concert is Finbar Walsh, son of Denis and Allison Walsh. Seven year old Fin is an astounding player of the Bodhrun – the percussion instrument of the Irish traditional instrument family. The venue is the acoustically astounding Degraves Mill outside Kyneton. The 150 year old ex flour mill is on the National Trust register and will perfectly complement the musicians and singers.

(Walking Blues)’, which made it to a number of best of the year lists, from press and radio, including: ●● The Top 16-- Tracks of the year - Paul Gough ABC Inside Sleeve, ●● Top 15 - Album of the year Brian Wise, Triple R, ●● Top 4 - Album of the year Stuart Coupe, Dirt Music show 2SER Sydney Gallie is an exceptional songwriter. This was demonstrated at the 'Bobfest' in Melbourne with Tex Perkins, where he received standing ovations on consecutive nights, before full houses. Gallie’s 20-year musical career has also seen him open for an impressive line-up of international acts including Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, Squeeze and others. He has shared the stage with luminaries such as Santana, Chris Isaak and Jimmy Cliff and some of Australia’s greats such as Liz Stringer, and Suzannah Espie. He is in demand on the Festival circuit having played the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival and many others. Spring Concert Sunday October 16, 2.30pm–4.30pm at Degraves Mill Carlsrhue. Tickets are available on our website www.mitch.org.au.

Family comes First

Come Try Fly Fishing

Macedon Ranges Family Law (MRFL) was established in May 2013 by Megan Puszkar. Megan wanted to create a legal environment entirely different to those that she had worked in before. An environment where people are valued, work/life balance is not just a phrase, family is priority and everyone is made to feel welcome and understood when they come through the door. MRFL established ten guiding principles which are the founding ideas behind everything that we do: ●● We value our clients, without them we are nothing. ●● We love what we do. ●● We speak like people, not like lawyers. ●● We do things that just make sense. ●● We are a work family. ●● We spend time with our families. ●● We live and work in this great community. ●● We are committed to rebuilding your life. We focus on Family Law, and help rebuild lives after traumatic family breakdowns. We are strong advocates against Violence on women in our community, we are here to help and create building blocks towards a future during or after separation.

The practice has grown considerably in the three year period since it opened its doors. To keep up with demand we are expanding our team and moving into new premises located at 45 Hamilton Street, Gisborne. We also draft basic wills and can assist families through probate applications for deceased estates. Should you require excellent legal advice close to home – call for an appointment to see where you stand.

Calder Fly Fishing Association Open Day

Woodend will host the Calder Fly Fishing Association Open Day from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 16 October. You've probably seen movie scenes of people fly fishing - a lake, river or rippling rocky mountain stream, the graceful curve of a fly line with fly snaking out in a loop across the water, a swirl, a splash and then the successful catch and release of a trout. (Pictured is very pleased Calder Fly Fishing Association member Chris Schrueder with his brown trout caught on member Mark Hobbs' Pilchard Nymph pattern)

You may have been bait fishing, but have you ever wondered about the technique of fishing with a near weightless fly using only the weight of the casting line and the flex of a matching fly rod? Now there's a challenge! Interested in the knowledge required to "match the hatch" of the trout's favoured bugs; the aquatic nymphs, larvae and beetles that inform the fly patterns designed to fool a trout? Did you know that you can use fly-fishing techniques for fishing in saltwater? Maybe you're a practising fly fisher who would like to learn some more from the experts? This is your chance to see and talk to many guest experts and experienced local fly fishers talking on and demonstrating their fly-fishing, casting, and fly tying skills. Seize the opportunity to try your skill at fly-casting for prizes using our equipment. More information on www.calderflyfishing.com.au, If you have a fly fishing passion or have ever wanted to give fly fishing a go this is an event not to be missed. Join us at Buffalo Sports Stadium, 1-29 Forest Street, Sunday October 16. Submitted by Louis Bokor, Calder Fly Fishing association. Photo: Mark Hobbs

October 2016 Stop Mental Illness Stigma

Advance Care Plans Advance care plans enable people to indicate their preferences for future medical treatment should they become unable to do so. Advance care plans are also known as “advance care directives” or “living wills”. People can nominate another person to act on their behalf in making medical decisions if they become incapacitated to do so. This is best formalised under an “Enduring Power of Attorney (Medical Treatment)” which is a legal document. Advance care planning means your wishes are known and your quality of life is likely to be improved. Families report feeling more comfortable and clinicians feel clearer about providing person-centred care. Our nurses, who conduct annual health assessments with people aged 75+, provide information about the advance care plan and enduring power of attorney during their visit. Our New Aged Care services in Residential Aged Care Facilities also offer to patients and their families the opportunity to create an advance care plan – these are of enormous benefit in providing the care residents prefer. Advance care plans can be recorded as part of your medical record for future reference. Discuss this with your health practitioner.

In our workplace, we have committed to a charter, pledging to Stop Mental Illness Stigma. Briefly, our pledge is: • We will be informed • We will listen • We will be mindful of our language • We will be inclusive • We will challenge the stereotypes • We will be supportive • We will promote recovery Murray Primary Health Network led a project with Hume and Loddon Mallee Murray “Partners in Recovery” programs to develop the charter. Please join in. For further details go to www.murrayphn.org.au/stopstigma

Shared Health Record

We now have the ability to digitally store key health information about ourselves for access by a range of health care providers in different locations. The My Health Record is a national digital health record system. Key health information like allergies, medical conditions, medicines, adverse reactions and immunisations are stored in a health summary. Brooke Street Medical Centre’s doctors and nurses are authorised, with your permission, to “upload” your health summary for sharing in the digital My Health Record. You decide who sees what in your shared health record. Security of these records is tight like a banking record. However, in case of emergency, health care providers with access to the My Health Record system can “break glass” (access your record) to provide you with the best possible care. To get the ball rolling: • Go to myhealthrecord.gov.au and register using your Medicare number to set up a MyGov account • Through the MyGov account, register for your My Health Record • Set the access controls you prefer and add any key information you’d like known in an emergency • Ask your doctor or nurse at your next appointment to “upload” your health record summary. Do this each time there is a significant change in your health status. Brooke St. Medical Centre – tel. (03) 5427 1002 page 12

Trivia arvo for Relay Lancefield/Macedon Ranges Relay For Life is preparing to celebrate 15 years of outstanding fundraising for the Cancer Council Victoria in 2017. The volunteer organising committee has set a fundraising goal of $80,000. If achieved this will take the total amount raised by the event to $1.3 million. To date 13 teams have signed up for the Relay on March 4 & 5 in 2017. The event will officially launch next month in conjunction with a Sunday trivia afternoon. Tables of 10 will be challenged with general knowledge questions and ticket proceeds will either go towards a team’s fundraising total or added to the event’s banking in the case of non-relay participants supporting the cause. A tentative date of November 20 from 2pm to 5.30pm has been set. Table bookings are $100 or individuals can secure a seat for $15. There will be plenty of healthy competition and fun activities aimed at building funds for cancer research, education, advocacy and support services. Recommended Plant List New guide for Five Mile Creek and Woodend Gardens Given the disturbance history of our local area it is hard to say exactly what would have grown where to a fine detail of accuracy. However, with the expert help of Adam Barber, Michelle Patrick, Krista PattersonMajoor, Peter Yates and David Gossip we have had a go at developing a list of all the indigenous (locally native) plants for the Woodend area. The list is broken up into different plant types (trees and shrubs, herbs, grasses, ferns, lilies and rushes, sedges and aquatic herbs). In addition, the specific areas where the plant species are considered suitable are indicated. We have also provided extra suggestions for plants suitable for home gardens. While these species may not be specifically native to Woodend, they would be found in the Macedon Ranges and have other excellent habitat qualities such as attracting insects and birds. You can download a copy of the list from our resources page at: www.woodendlandcare.wordpress. com. We hope it will be a useful resource for the Woodend community. Thanks heaps to Adam, Peter, Michelle and David for your input.

October Working Bee Our next Working Bee will be at 9am on Sunday the October 23 near the Woodend Children’s Park. We will be revisiting the Trees for Mum planting site from earlier this year in order to give the plants a little TLC after this wet winter. We hope to see you there! For more information about the working bee or to provide comment on our new planting list, please email woodendlandcare@gmail.com.

ACT Commissioner to speak at Sustainability Group AGM

The Geburrh Centre project, the community driven initiative to invigorate the existing squash court and community centre precinct in Woodend is gaining momentum. Already over 400 survey submissions have been received outlining peoples expectations and needs for the site. An effort is being made by the Group to ensure all age groups are included in the survey, whether online or by hard copy and these are available in the Woodend library foyer, Bourkies Bakehouse, and Woodend Neighbourhood House until December. Consultations will be carried out in the local schools next term to ensure the younger members of our town are represented as well. Please contact us at geburrhcentre@gmail.com if you would like a member of our Team to meet with your community group personally. Cr John Connors has presented a notice of motion on behalf of the group to council this month outlining that the community is seeking change for this precinct, that a masterplan for the whole area is needed, and that with endorsement by the new councillor team we will gain some priority in the council’s four year plan decided in the new year. Please don’t hesitate to view our progress online at GeburrhCentre.com and make sure you have your say to how you feel this site should be developed.

The Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group (MRSG) invites you to hear Professor Kate Auty speak at the guest presentation preceding their AGM in Woodend on 11 October. Kate’s theme will be “Many people make change” reflecting on climate change, biodiversity, community energy and communications. MRSG President, Mr Ralf Thesing says he is excited to host Professor Auty as her talk reflects their group’s aim to transform the Macedon Ranges into a model sustainable community. “For example, we have created the Macedon Ranges Renewable Energy Fund which gives community groups zero interest loans to install renewable energy systems on their buildings. It’s a revolving fund, where repayments are made from savings on the recipient’s electricity bills, and that money is then loaned to another group”. Professor Auty has been the ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and Environment since May this year having come from the same position in Victoria. She is also Chair of the Advisory Board for the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute. With an environmental sciences and law background, Professor Auty gives advice on alleviating climate change through wide consultation with communities and governments.

WORDS ON

•Wine • This months reviews focus on the inaugural release from Macedon Ranges winery Lyons Will Estate. Established in 1996 and initially planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the vineyard was purchased in recent years by Oliver Rapson and Renata Morello with additional plantings of Gamay and Riesling taking the total area under vine to 10 acres. The initial releases provide real excitement and given the limited quantities produced won’t be around for too long! 2014 Lyons Will Estate Chardonnay 2014 continues to be known as a high quality but devastatingly low yielding vintage with the Chardonnay cropped at only 0.7 tonne per acre. A straw yellow in the glass the nose gives honeyed nectarine and white peach with background oak spice and fresh nougat. The palate has an underlying thread of honeyed stone fruits and green apple with a rolling mineral edge that balances the wines richer notes, to finish there are subtle cashew and lanolin framed by considerable mouthfeel and length to finish. Reminiscent of Chablis in style with a few years under the belt, this will continue to evolve over time.

2014 Lyons Will Estate Pinot Noir A medium red in the glass with lighter hues towards the rim, on the nose you are met with cherry and rhubarb that benefits from subtle herbaceous and earthen notes; aromatic baking spices leave a lasting impression. The acid structure is impeccable and combines with fine and drying tannins to set this wine up for the long haul. In terms of fruit it sits on the dark cherry spectrum with touches of rhubarb and a savoury edge providing no end of interest. If this was the first attempt, I can’t wait to see future vintages. The Woodend Bee Friendly Society is a group of like minded bee keepers interested in promoting sustainable beekeeping in the Macedon Ranges district. Anyone with an interest in bees are welcome from the aspirant to the novice to the experienced bee keeper. But the meetings are not just dressing up in a white bee suit and “oohing and aahing” when a queen bee is spotted in the hive. Last meeting’s topic was bees wax. Nice and simple. The meeting started with various techniques of purifying the wax from a bee hive. Fiona Marantelli demonstrated her methods of making pure bees wax candles and tapers, and discussed the virtues of bees wax candles. Unlike paraffin candles that are petroleum based, bees wax candles are toxin free when they burn giving off the sweet aroma of the honey and pollen that the bees were feeding on. A little more costly, bees wax candles last between 2 to 5 times longer than normal paraffin wax candles. Bee wax candles when burnt are reputed to interact and neutralise airborne allergen particles greatly reducing some allergic reactions.

David Gormley O’Brien shared his family’s secret beeswax furniture polish recipe. You needed to attend to discover this one. But the piece de resistance was Sam Rixon’s bees wax tips and recipes from the “School of Domestic Goddessery”. Sam demonstrated her ingenious natural “glad wrap” made from a fine cotton cloth impregnated with beeswax. Safe as a food covering that can be used again and again. Sam’s next concoction was a beautiful peppermint flavoured bee’s wax lip balm. Her final offering was an all-over moisturising lotion based on bees wax The recipe is provided here for you to experiment at home with.

Melt the oils together, almond oil, coconut oil, lanolin, vitamin E oil and beeswax in a bowl over gently boiling water. Allow to cool, stirring occasionally. Combine aloe vera and water in a tall jug. Using a stick blender, slowly add the cooled oils to the water based ingredients. The mixture will form a white lotion. Add the essential oils then blend again. Pour into small sterilised jars. Use within 4 weeks or if stored in fridge within 4 months. The moisturiser is preservative free and will go off if not store appropriately.

The Woodend Bee Friendly Society welcomes all new members with an interest in bees. The meetings are held at the Woodend Neighbourhood House, 47 Forrest Street Woodend at 3pm on the third Sunday of the month. Further details contact David Gormley-O’Brien 0408 578 032 or woodendbees@gmail.com. Woodend Bee Friendly Society is a working group of the Macedon Sustainability Group.

One step closer to going solar! Woodend Playgroup has pledged to raise funds to cover the costs of the installation of rooftop solar panels. Keen to reduce Playgroup’s ecological footprint, the committee also recognised the opportunity to teach the children about the importance of sustainability and the environment. Woodend Playgroup was honoured to be the recipients of this year’s Rotary Fundraising Luncheon held at the end of August at the Woodend Bowling Club. The luncheon was attended by 70 people and through ticket sales, a silent auction and raffle prizes, Woodend Rotary was able to donate more than three quarters of the funds needed to go solar.

Woodend Playgroup President Libby Nuttall was thrilled with the end result, which far exceeded her expectations: “We are so appreciative of the assistance we’ve received from Woodend Rotary and we want to thank Grant Hocking and the rest of the Rotarians for generously supporting the day. We know that our local businesses are frequently asked to support the community’s fundraising efforts so we also want to thank them for donating prizes”. Woodend Playgroup has one more fundraising event scheduled for the year in which they hope to hit their ‘Go Solar’ fundraising target. Playgroup will be hosting a Christmas Cake Stall outside the newsagents on December 3. With the end of the year fast approaching, this is also a good opportunity to remind Playgroup members of the three remaining events for the year; Bush Playgroup on Saturday October 15, Quarterly Parents’ Drinks on Friday October 21, and the Children’s Christmas Party on Sunday November 27.

You might have thought the great debate about an Australian Republic was over, but visit Duneira on Sunday October 2 to discover writer/conversationalist Rodney Hall, former chair of the Australia Council, in a vibrant discussion. With Seniors Week fast approaching, over 55s will find a hands-on range of interactive events coming up at Goldfields Libraries. A different topic will be explored each month: Your Brain Matters in September; Worried About Your Memory in October and Mild Cognitive Impairment in November. Those wanting to learn how to connect online are well catered for too with a Facebook for Seniors session at Woodend. The free workshops will cover social media basics in a practical, easy to understand format. Music fans will love our online music sessions covering how to download and organise music using iTunes. One-on-one IT help sessions are available by appointment at Woodend, allowing the opportunity to ask specific technology questions and to learn how to make the most of the library’s eResources. For other services of interest to seniors visit: www.ncgrl. vic.gov.au/seniors

Music and dancing will be the focus of the 2016 Seniors Festival events in Macedon Ranges Shire. The annual Grey Light Dance will kick off the celebrations on Wednesday October 12 at Kyneton Town Hall from 1.30pm, with music from the 50s, 60s and 70s by local band Growing Up Is Optional. This dance is run by Council in partnership with Kyneton Police and has been moved from its usual date in May in order to coincide with the Seniors Festival. Transport to the dance will be available but must be requested when booking. Just to make sure residents in the north of the shire don’t have all the fun, Council will hold an inaugural Riddells Creek dance on Sunday October 30 at 1.30pm. It will be one of the first community events to take place at the newly refurbished Riddells Creek Community Centre (incorporating the Riddells Creek Senior Citizens). Once again, local band Growing Up Is Optional will provide entertainment. Both events are free but bookings are essential. Call Stephanie on 5422 0258 or email sharper@mrsc. vic.gov.au to RSVP.

This is a show you won’t want to miss: ‘Whose Wives Are They Anyway?’ by Michael Parker is being Directed by Frank Harvey. It’s an action packed, hilarious comedy/farce that will have you giggling from the moment the curtain goes up!The scene is set at a golf weekend where David & John (who have packed their wives off on a shopping weekend) intend to ‘golf their brains out’ before they meet their new CEO on Monday morning. Little do they know, the CEO has also checked in to the same golf club and on running into them insists on meeting them for dinner that evening ….including their wives. She informs them that “any man who goes off for a weekend of golf and leaves his wife behind will have no place in her organisation.” Panic & mayhem develops into a downward spiral of total chaos as our intrepid executives have one hour in which to find substitute wives or it's “curtains” come Monday morning! ‘Tuning into teens’: help for parents

For a number of years, Newham Mechanics Institute has been hosting Friday night lectures through the winter months on a range of diverse topics. Inviting speakers from a seemingly endless pool of locals with fascinating career histories and highly specialised expertise, the lectures have proven extremely popular, attracting large audiences to hear anecdotes and advice on prisons, jewellery, food fermentation, coal mining, dementia, and much more. Now, the Institute's lectures are moving out of winter and into spring with a new event. Laura Spencer is a social worker who specialises in families. She currently works in a local secondary school supporting teenagers and their parents through the joys and challenges of adolescence. With her presentation entitled 'Tuning Into Teens' and a Q&A session afterwards, the evening promises to offer some brilliant insights for parents of teens. Laura says, "I see it as picking up some detective skills I use to decipher the often baffling choices and actions of Generation Z."

President of the Newham Mechanics Institute, Stephen Mitchell, is excited about the expansion of the lecture series program. "Many people are not aware that Victoria's Mechanics Institutes were originally established to provide adult education, particularly in technical subjects, to working men. Our lectures are held in the spirit of these early ideals and draw on an incredible breadth of talent within our local community." “In the past, we've had Atholl Guy of The Seekers and Olympic gold medallist Tom King. The evenings are friendly, entertaining and informative. We have the bar open an hour before the talk and offer a range of snacks. There's always a great atmosphere and plenty of discussion and debate. They are very lively evenings!” Laura Spencer's ‘Tune Into Teens’ will be held at 7.30pm on Friday October 21 at the Newham Mechanics Institute. Entry is a gold coin donation on the night. Free bookings can be made at www.trybooking.com/NDCH or calling the Newham General Store on 5427 0766 or kayemontebello@hotmail.com.

Father’s Day raffle

On the Saturday prior to Father’s day Woodend Rotary held a raffle, selling tickets outside Woodend Newsagency. Local business kindly supported Rotary by providing fantastic prizes to create a hamper. The prize included a home security camera system donated by Mitre 10 Woodend, a meal voucher from The Vic Hotel and some car related items. The prize was won by a local family with young children and we know the prize was greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone who purchased tickets and supported the raffle. Kyneton Badminton

The Kyneton Badminton Association's summer season begins on October 3. New players of all ages and abilities are always welcome. Competition is held on Monday nights from 7pm at Kyneton Toyota Sports Centre. For more details call Kevin Roberts on 5422 3057. Submitted by Graham Smith

Basketball celebrations as summer comps loom Last month, the Macedon Ranges Basketball Association celebrated the end of the winter season with a major family event in Woodend. We recognised Aussie Hoops players and the 100 plus children now playing for Woodend Hawks. Congratulations to all the MVPs and Coach’s Award recipients, and well done to all our players on a great season. A special celebration occurred on the day as the MRBA announced the winner of its inaugural Lifetime Membership Award. Michael Grantham received the award in recognition for his many years’ contribution to the sport – training, coaching, on the committee and, in more recent years, running the MRBA’s year-round weekly All Abilities program. * See pictures on back page

Michael’s son, Nick, who has made the Under 18 Victorian Country State Team, was on hand to celebrate his father’s achievement and to hand out certificates to our younger players. We are definitely producing some great basketballers in Woodend. Congratulations to the many local children who made it into Basketball Victoria Country’s Under 12 Jamboree in September and the Under 14 Regional Academy Program. And special mention to Erin Condron and Lauren Trakosas for being selected for the BVC’s elite Under 14’s Gold Nugget Camp where they have the chance to be selected for state level.

Play basketball in Woodend this summer

Come October, the MRBA will be running local summer competitions for juniors and adults, as well as offering skills/games sessions for beginners through the Aussie Hoops program. We will also continue to offer the All Abilities program. Register ASAP, as places can be limited. For further information or to register, visit www.mrba.net.au. Submitted by N. Cooper

Woodend Masters

When the Masters played in Swanpool a month ago, little did we know the conditions would ready us for the home game against Kerang on Sunday, August 28. With our home at Gilbert Gordon Oval in use for the RDFL finals, the old blokes were forced to head to Buffalo Stadium to use the kids’ paddock. The signs were ominous the day before when a few players headed there to mark out the oval. We were met with wet, muddy and in some parts quick sand. But we’d experienced this at Swamp-pool. Gumboots were again the preferred footwear. Kerang needed a hand to fill their team and our president Steve Crook, Daniel Edwards and Mick Woodbury all headed next door to don a different jumper. With a sausage sizzle on the sidelines the scene was set for that sinking feeling… one where you try to run and embed your boot ankle high. Having missed the Swamp-pool game, Bushy continued to find space – his teammates were avoiding him! The bearded one was a ball magnet and even dished out a chance for goal to a teammate (you reading this Fordey?) Gerome Raco took the Greg Luganis diving approach to a suss spoil when a Kerang defender came from behind. Racs was on the ground clutching his head and only surfaced when he realised no one gave shit. Rocket Rod McDaniel was a gun in the guts and didn’t stop all day. With our regular target in centre half-forward Big Dougy Southerland busy turning snags on the sidelines with our trainer Dean Frank, it was up to Tim Chew. The big fella didn’t disappoint and snagged three goals for the Hawks. Normally off the ground and under icepacks, Anthony ‘Woody’ Woodcock was sent from back pocket to forward pocket where he snagged a sausage roll to much applause or shock. Mainly because he didn’t roll his ankle or get a black eye – he saved that for Mad Monday. Nick Watkins was on fire with two goals and was stoked that his hammy held up. It’s a been a brilliant year of fun and laughter with plenty more to come. Pre-season training starts in October. See you all there. Small Business Restructures The government recently passed into law new small business rollover rules. The new rules are designed to enable any small business to restructure their business without Capital Gains Tax (CGT). Rollover is generally available providing the following conditions are met: 1.

2. 3. 4.

Both entities involved are small business entities (Turnover less than $2 million dollars or net assets less than $6 million) There is no change in the ultimate economic ownership of the significant business assets Those significant assets continue to be active assets No significant private use of these active assets.

The rollover relief rules apply from 1 July 2016 to transfers between sole traders, companies, partnerships or trusts.

Consider Jake’s Case: Jake is thinking of restructuring his Earthmoving business which turns over $1 million per annum. Currently a company he is looking to trade as a trust. Jake owns 100% of the shares in the company. Jake’s advisor sets up a Trust called Jakes Trust and Jake is made the test individual in the Family Trust Election. There is no change in beneficial ownership. The business assets continue to be used in the trust and they are not used outside of the business. Jake can therefore apply the CGT rollover relief. Jake may need to consider GST and stamp duty. Should you wish to discuss further please feel free to contact Andrew Marshall or Janine Orpwood on 5427 8100 for an initial consultation.

Woodend Bowling Club officially opened the new season at the Club on Sunday September 25. The event attracted the majority of members who were all keen to get the new season under way. The new Midweek Pennant Season starts on Tuesday October 4 and Saturday Pennant on October 8 both run through to the finals in March. The Club will be well represented in several divisions on both days and we are hoping a successful season lies ahead.

Working Bee a great success

The Club conducted our annual working bee in late October, and was attended by many members who undertook much-needed work both inside and outside the clubhouse. We are very grateful to those members who gave up their time to help. And a big thank you to those members who give up their time on a regular basis to do important jobs around the club, such as cleaning the clubhouse, maintaining the rinks, gardening and cutting the grass.

Why not become a Social Member

You don’t need to be a lawn bowler to become a member of the Woodend Bowling Club. We have a number of members who are purely Social Members, and you can join for half of the full club membership fee. This gives you access to all of the club’s social facilities, and you enjoy our low bowling club bar prices at an additional discounted price. It is also a great way to ease yourself into becoming a pennant bowler, as you are able to use the club’s rinks at any time when a pennant round is not being played. The club is even able to provide bowls free of charge.

Woodend Bowling Club runs a social game of bowls every Wednesday of the year, weather permitting, starting at around 12.30pm. We attract keen bowlers from around the Macedon Ranges who enjoy some competitive bowling in a light-hearted manner, but also each other’s company. It costs only $6 a head for several hours of bowling and includes afternoon tea and entry into the raffle. If you are a keen bowler looking for a fun afternoon please give me a call on the number below. It is also a fantastic way for new bowlers to introduce themselves to the game, in a fun atmosphere. We can even provide the bowls and, of course, there is no shortage of coaching advice from all of the experienced bowlers.

Check out our new website

We have recently launched our new website, which you can view on www.woodendbowlsclub.weebly.com. It contains details about all of the bowling activities, as well as all of the facilities we have to offer. And you can also follow us on Facebook. Daylight Savings: Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery When you change your clock you should also change your smoke alarm battery. The CFA recommends all Victorians replace your smoke alarm batteries at the time that you turn back your clocks for the start of daylight savings – which is NOW. The message is quite simple: only working smoke alarms save lives. If there’s no sound from your smoke alarm, there’s no warning. Remember, it is normally smoke not flame or heat that kills the majority of fire victims. When asleep, our sense of smell is largely diminished. The smoke may also put occupants into a deeper sleep, so a smoke alarm helps wake you. And, with all of the plastics, materials, electronics and chemicals around - house smoke can be extremely toxic. Here are some interesting home fire facts: ●● One in five Australians have experienced a fire in their homes ●● Research shows that the absence of a smoke alarm can increase the possibility of a fatality by 60% ●● While 45% of properties visited had smoke alarms installed, 31% of those were not functioning with the batteries flat or even removed ●● About 64% of house fires were unintentionally lit ●● Around 56% of these started in the kitchen during cooking and a further 15% the result of electrical faults ●● In more than 95% of metropolitan household fires someone was home at some stage during the fire To ensure you have a working smoke alarm: ●● Test it weekly by pushing the test button with a broom handle to make sure it beeps. ●● Dust the alarm with a vacuum cleaner brush. ●● Change the battery at least once a year.

Now is the time to start reducing the risk of fire!

The Fire Restriction period is not far away. In recent years we have had several consecutive extremely dangerous summers: this year will be no exception. With reasoable winter rains and strong spring growth, this year promises to be one of the most dangerous fire seasons for many years. NOW is the time to start preparing to reduce the risks of fire danger to you, your family and your property. Macedon Ranges Shire has introduced specific laws as to which properties are able to burn off, and how large your fire can be, please check the Macedon Ranges Shire website before you burn. For further information contact Captain Mick Christie or 1st Lieutenant Mike Dornau at the Woodend CFA on 5427 2356, visit the station in Urquhart Street, follow us on Facebook or our website: www.woodendcfa.org. The Hotels of the Woodend District ‘Oh, the "pubs!" Who shall describe them? Three or four of them had each a "hall of delight", fitted with a stage and drop curtain at one end, and a disreputable piano or fiddler. The delights were further provided by a staff of artists and artistes, who took care not to be at all too refined for their audiences. Imagine, if you can, four of these halls, crammed to suffocation with a howling mob of lusty men, each one apparently trying to make more noise and tobacco smoke than his fellow, and who were kept well supplied with the vilest spirituous concoctions conceivable, the reeking air almost thick enough with smoke and blasphemy to float an egg. Such was Woodend at that time’ Extract from a letter to the Editor of the Woodend Star, from A.B. Original, August 28 1897 writing of the early 1860's in Woodend There were over fifty hotels throughout the district from the earliest days until the present day, including those at Woodend, the Black Forest, Ashbourne, Rochford, Hesket, Carlsruhe, Newham and Tylden. They were the sites of not only entertainment and community, shire and club meetings but also inquests with the bodies at times buried in the hotel yards. At least once a case of surgery was performed and many a court hearing with one publican building a special room for that purpose. There was murder, manslaughter, theft and arson, celebrations, relief concerts and many a ball until dawn. If you want to know more about the hotels of the Woodend District then you must read our book. “Time Gentlemen, Please”, with wonderful illustrations by noted artist, Joycelyn Moreland.
