Woodend’s ANZAC Parade
Hundreds of people attended the Anzac day commemoration service in Woodend. It was the biggest attendance for many years as people turned out to be part of the 100 year milestone since Australian and New Zealand troops came ashore at Gallipoli. Many had already attended the dawn service at Mt Macedon. The parade started at the station end of town and stretched for the entire block. Led by the Kyneton Municipal band the parade included retired and current military personnel, representatives from Braemar College cadets, Woodend Red Cross, Woodend and St Ambrose primary schools and Braemar Secondary College as well as other community organisations. Members of the Woodend RSL sub-branch helped coordinate the parade as it made its way down the High Street service road and down Anslow Street to the RSL. The many spectators that lined the route applauded the group and joined in to meet at the RSL. Such was the size, that the start of the column had reached the RSL as the
rear was still crossing High Street. Although overcast the weather was kind and no rain appeared during the parade or speeches. After the Welcome to Country by Gene Roberts the service included wreath-laying by politicians, community groups, schools and individuals as the Kyneton Municipal band played in the background. The guest speaker was Dr Frank Donovan who address touched on the nature of the culture today and compared it to that of 1915. There was also mention of Corporal Spartan a retired bomb disposal canine in Afghanistan who had joined the parade. As always the playing of the Last Post moved many in the crowd.
Woodend’s residents turned out in force for the parade
At the completion of the service it seemed that most of those in attendance accepted the invitation of Woodend RSL sub branch President Barry Meldrum to enjoy the food and drink on offer. The RSL was filled to capacity with the auxiliary providing a lovely array of sandwiches, hot food and drinks. Submitted by Grant Hocking Photography by D Rigoni & G Hocking

Supporting Our Community
More than 20 years ago the RSL clubs of the Macedon Region and 1st Woodend Scout Group decided it would be a good idea to provide the attendees at the Mount Macedon Dawn Service with a free hot drink and something warm to eat. This was the beginning of a tradition with continues today. In the first year, about 70 people took advantage of the service we offered.
Photograph courtesy Paul Rovere
In 2015, 1st Woodend’s Scouts, Venturers and Rovers served more than 1000 cups of tea or coffee and 1000 sausages. It is a whole group effort to set-up the equipment needed for the ANZAC Day breakfast. A different layout was used this year to accommodate the larger number of people expected to attend the Dawn Service. Despite the wet night, the Scouts and Venturers were on deck at 3.15am on ANZAC Day to ensure everything was ready on time By 4am coffee and tea were available to warm the first of the visitors attending the Dawn Service.

Change it Up celebrates
It’s been a huge twelve months for local businesswoman Libby Nuttall, founder of Change It Up Training: What started out as a small part-time venture has become a shire wide success. “I think it’s about creating a community, rather than focusing on the business. I wanted people to feel like they belong, like there’s a safe place they can exercise and feel good,” said Libby. From a couple of mums fitness classes in April last year, Libby has spearheaded the growth of her business throughout the Macedon Ranges, now employing three trainers to run classes in Woodend, Macedon, Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Romsey and Kyneton. “I started the business focused on women, but more and more women approached me asking if their husbands could come and I thought, ‘who I am to stop a man from exercising?’” she said of her classes, which now feature boxing, bootcamps and Metafit. “All of our trainers hold the same values - we’re about encouraging and motivating, not punishing and selfpromotion. We don’t crack down on calories and we don’t promote fad diets or shakes, just great wholesome living and happy lifestyles.” said Libby. Libby said her next step is to take the company’s Woodend boot camps inside over winter, so keep an eye out for the changed timetable at www.changeituptraining.com “I’ve been really overwhelmed by the support of our local communities. We have such a fantastic community of men and women who are just eager to look after themselves,” said Libby. Change It Up has held several events throughout its first twelve months including training a team of 15 women for “The Stampede,” a 10km mud run in the Yarra Valley. Last month a group of Change It Up clients signed up to Care’s Walk in Her Shoes campaign to raise awareness and money for women in developing nations. The group raised almost $1400 and the week culminated in a 10km hike on Mt Macedon on the Sunday. Due to the success of the walk, Libby has decided to organise regular hikes around the area, notjust for Change It Up clients, but anyone looking to get to know their local area better and get active. “I’d like to thank everyone who has given Change It Up a chance over the last twelve months and helped us continue sharing our passion for health and fitness, the business is everything I dreamed sof and the enthusiasm of the local community is what keeps us going,” said Libby. Libby is now in the process of launching a range of pre and post natal fitness programs online, called Miracle Months, due to be released in coming months. Submitted by L. Nuttall

“If the Australian nation was founded at Gallipoli, then its depth and soul were confirmed in its defence at Kokoda” July 1942 Australian troops begin a four month battle with Japanese forces. They are poorly equipped, have no effective jungle warfare tactics and are at the end of a very long and difficult supply line. Heavily outnumbered, the Australian forces fight to save Port Moresby as the Japanese attempt to capture it via the Kokoda Track. Fearing that the Japanese will launch an invasion on Australia, they fight to save themselves, their mates and their beloved country. April 2015 Bronwyn Rumble, Andy Scicluna and Maggie Nalty embark on their own memorable journey along the Kokoda Track. For 8 days they will traverse the steep 96 kilometre track, taking them 50 hours to complete at a rate of two kilometres per hour. Their trek honours the courageous soldiers who fought some of the most desperate and vicious battles of World War 2. They will be challenged physically and mentally. For months the trio have trained up and down the side of Mt Macedon in heat, rain and mist, becoming intimate with these trails. Being local to the area made regular midweek hikes possible. Favouring ‘the goat track’ and ‘the chute’, the intrepid group also trekked in the Dandenong’s, at Mt Donna Buang and in the Cathedral Ranges. Their longest treks spanned 17km! The real adventure begins after hours of driving through jungle to Kokoda station. They will experience waist deep river crossings, steep climbs and descents and all the things Continued on page 11

Kokoda ANZAC Trek, continued from page you would expect from a jungle environment; humidity, mud, leeches and breath taking views at an altitude of 2190m. Their progress is slow and careful and they must negotiate narrow ridges, slippery log bridges and almost perpendicular ascents. The 8th day is ANZAC DAY and they arrive at Owers’ Corner. Heading to the Bomana War Cemetery, it’s time to reflect on the sacrifices made on the Kokoda Track over 70 years ago, the very track these three brave Macedon Ranges residents have just conquered. Their journey ends as it should – with a greater connection and deeper level of respect for the 4000 men who were causalities due to sickness, the 1600 men who were wounded and the 625 men who lost their lives on the Kokoda Trail. At last they are treated to a hot shower and are able to watch live coverage of the ANZAC day footy being played. Their plane trip home will take 5 hours and one can only imagine the joy they will feel at being back with their friends and family in their beloved country, Australia. New tools for Macedon Ranges Men’s Sheds
If you looked inside a local Men’s Shed nowadays, you would see much more than men building, restoring or fixing things. With the help of free training provided by Macedon Ranges Shire Council, the region’s five Men’s Sheds are now equipped with tools of a different kind, the kind that will help men through some of life’s greatest challenges. Over two consecutive Fridays in March, 19 men across all five Men’s Sheds completed 12 hours of Mental Health First Aid training, delivered by facilitators Pauline Neil and Annie Rowland who also run Council’s youth mental health programs. “Men’s Sheds are an ideal forum for having a candid discussion about mental health with what can be a hard to reach but also at-risk group of people in our community,” said facilitator, Pauline Neil. Evidence shows that older men are at risk of developing mental health issues, whether due to transition from work to retirement, the loss of a partner or other factors. There is also a sharp rise in suicide rates for older men, particularly over 75 years old (source: Australian Bureau of Statistics 2010). The men were enthusiastic participants, with many sharing their experiences of knowing someone with a mental health issue. Their feedback was universally positive, and all recommended that the training be offered to more older men. One participant, Bill Achison from the Kyneton Men’s Shed, congratulated the two trainers, saying, “I think they spoke our language, were very professional and had our undivided attention.” Co-facilitator, Annie Rowland applauded the group’s openness and willingness to engage with mental health issues. “These men now know how to recognise when there might be a problem, and how to respond when something that started as a ‘friendly chat’ turns into a critical conversation,” she said. “There are a lot of stereotypes about men when it comes to talking and sharing personal stories, especially if those stories might be of an emotional or deeply personal nature. “I think that kind of thinking can feed into a bigger issue of men not seeking out or offering appropriate support during difficult times. “What an absolute privilege it was to train such an insightful group and equip them with yet another tool to add their tool kit,” said Ms Rowland. If you or anyone you know requires support please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or the beyondblue support service on 1300 224 636. Tanne Urie from the Macedon Ranges Venturer Unit received her Queen's Scout Award in a presentation at the 1st Woodend Scout Log Cabin on Friday 27th March surrounded by her scouting community and family. Also in attendance were the Mayor of Macedon Ranges, Jennifer Anderson, and the District Venturer Leader, Trevor Clark. The Queen's Scout Award is the highest youth award achievable in the Scouting movement. To obtain the award the recipient is required to achieve 15 badges for achievements in areas such as community involvement, adventurous activities, personal growth and leadership development. 1st Woodend Scout Group is almost 90 years’ old and has a proud history of producing Queen's Scouts on a regular basis. The Brahms & Lisszt
The Brahms & Liszt would like to thank the Macedon Ranges community for the very warm welcome to Woodend. It’s been almost three months since we opened our doors and the support from locals has been fantastic. Tucked away at the rear of 80 High Street (in the mint green building, opposite the Commonwealth Bank) our intimate space provides a relaxing & cosy atmosphere. We’re also very spoilt to have such a large decking area with views to the beautiful Mt. Macedon. Offering something a little different you can come in and enjoy our crêpes & waffles, made fresh to order with so many yummy toppings such as strawberries & cream or Nutella & banana. Or treat yourself to a double waffle with bacon & maple syrup!! As well as offering a great coffee lounge ‘The Brahms & Liszt’ is also licensed - so why not pop in on a Friday evening for a glass of wine and some nibbles. A great place to catch up with friends for a glass of bubbles or to simply unwind with a coffee, a sweet treat & lose yourself in a book. John & the team look forward to meeting many more locals over the coming months as well as our returning clients who have been wonderfully supportive and have provided such positive feedback so far. a messaage from the Mayor Watch this space In case you were wondering I would like to update you on the progress of the Woodend Town structure plan. Council’s Strategic Planning team is continuing to work on converting the Plan into a planning scheme amendment. The draft planning scheme amendment will go before Council in the middle of the year for consideration. The amendment should reflect the adopted Structure Plan and its recommendations with the aim to manage future development and growth of Woodend and to protect key features of the town. Council will ensure that the community's views and input that was provided throughout the structure planning process will translate into practical and useable planning provisions that reflect the vision for Woodend. Once the planning scheme amendment is finalised in draft, a full community consultation program will be undertaken and all documents will be made available to the public for discussion and comment. Also in May, take a look at the draft budget and council plan, for your input. Don't forget you can also see what I am up to at council via www.facebook.com/JenniferForWestWard Best wishes, Jennifer

Helping save the planet is as easy as C3!
Do you ever ask yourself, “Climate Change, what can I do about that?” You know that our carbon footprint is way too big… so you ask, “What difference can I make?” You know that the time has come to keep coal and gas and oil in the ground and get our electricity from clean, renewable sources… but you shrug and ask, “Surely the government should sort this out?” So, while the politicians squabble over the mechanisms to tackle Climate Change… you can take action now! By purchasing accredited GreenPower and Carbon Offsets, you are investing in the generation of renewable energy and mitigating carbon pollution. Yes, it can be an additional outlay for you. But don’t you think, if you’re asking those questions, that this easy and effective action is worth taking.

So where do I start? Well, C3 should be the partner you choose! C3 is a purchasing scheme, developed here in Woodend by the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group, for both GreenPower and Carbon Offsets or Credits. GreenPower purchased by C3 are from a ‘decoupled’ provider. This means you can stick with your current electricity retailer for your electricity, but choose to buy your GreenPower separately, from C3. Carbon Offsets, accredited under the highly regarded Verified Carbon Standard, can be purchased for your emissions from your domestic gas use, car journeys and flights. C3 is flexible. You can choose the amount of GreenPower and Carbon Offsets you want to purchase; when you want to purchase them and you can even choose which of the listed green projects you want to support. With C3, your purchases are tax-deductible and gst-free, and a portion of every transaction is donated to the MRSG. So you can do the right thing for the planet, for your community and not get hit so hard in your hip pocket! Macedon local, Rob Brunton is excited by C3; “I love that I can personalise what I choose to offset and that money goes back to the community for future clean energy and environmental projects.” And you’ll receive a certificate verifying the action you have taken… to tackle Climate Change and help ease the threat to the beautiful Macedon Ranges. Meet Jane Dawson & Melissa Hocking, Volunteers for Australian Red Cross Emergency Services –. Cyclone Marcia. On the 20th of February this year, Cyclone Marcia hit the central Queensland coast. Over 1000 homes across the area sustained structural damage, and 80,000 homes were left without electricity. Two of our local Red Cross Emergency Services volunteers were deployed to Queensland, along with the Victorian contingent of staff and volunteers. Melissa Hocking spent five days in the Brisbane call centre, during the period after the cyclone. The majority of calls during this period were for people obtaining food vouchers, provided by Red Cross, for people who were without electricity for an extended period. Jane Dawson was based in Rockhampton as part of the Incident Management Team. Jane worked in
Field Operations and was responsible for overseeing approximately 1000 volunteers, across the district office, four relief centres, and one roving relief team. Apart from this, Red Cross also co-ordinated an Outreach program to visit homes door to door to check on residents, and to provide information on services and assistance available to them. Jane’s role also involved planning with other Emergency Services providers; as well as co-ordinating the well being program to de-brief and support the volunteers in the field. Jane said that the overall experience was a very positive one, “I felt so honoured to support people in extreme need; both the local population and our own volunteers”. Melissa and Jane’s volunteer work with Emergency Services also has a very local presence. Woodend currently has five fully trained volunteers, and another three in the process of completing their
training. Our local volunteers have recently attended both the Metcalfe and Kyneton-Black Hill fires, to provide catering for the fire crews. Jane is involved with training volunteers all over the state, and has recently travelled to Mildura, Hamilton and Gippsland to implement training programs. Another aspect of Red Cross volunteering that Melissa and Jane are involved with is a program called Preparedness. Local Municipalities work with Red Cross to identify people who may need support in preparing a personal emergency plan. Jane and Melissa have travelled extensively throughout Victoria, visiting with locals and helping them implement plans to enact in an emergency situation. This work is by far their favourite, and both of them speak very fondly about the people they have met, and the satisfaction they have in assisting them in such a personal way. Continues next page

Volunteers for Australian Red Cross Emergency Services continued
This photo of Melissa and Jane was taken by well known local, Joan Davies. She happened to be in Ocean Grove on holiday when she spotted the girls having lunch in the back of their Red Cross vehicle. You just never know who you will bump in to! Jane says Melissa always packs the lunch when they are travelling. Anyone who has attended a Woodend Rotary luncheon over the years would know this is a great arrangement for Jane. When Melissa Hocking offers you lunch, you know you are in for a treat! If you are interested in finding out more about the many different ways you can volunteer with Red Cross go to the website www.redcross.org.au . Redcross Woodend
April has been another productive month for Woodend Red Cross. We were very proud to participate in the Anzac Day March in Woodend in conjunction with the Woodend RSL, where a wreath from Red Cross was laid by three of our members as part of the ceremony. Red Cross. Recovery and Repair in Vanuatu The Australian Red Cross Cyclone Pam Vanuatu appeal has been very successful and heartfelt thanks are extended to all who donated to support this cause. Areas that Red Cross assist with include providing shelter materials, essential household items and clean drinking water after the cyclone struck. Aid has been given to 12.800 people across 13 islands by the end of March, and more people will receive much needed support as the operation continues. Accessing the islands was one of the difficulties that needed to be surmounted and required the hiring of boats, charter planes and helicopters, as well as volunteers and staff having to cope with rough seas on route to areas of need. May 2015 Iron woMan Achievement
•
•
• Our dietitian, Annie Barry recently competed in the Iron Man Asia-Pacific Championship held in Melbourne. The Ironman event includes a 3.9 km swim, followed by a 180.25 km bike ride and finishing with a 42.2 km marathon run. Annie completed this amazing feat in just under 14.5 hours. She was presented with her Iron Man medal by the winner of the men’s race. With typical good humour, Annie says “unfortunately I misheard the announcer as I was jogging down the finishing chute and thought the guy presenting medals was a ‘Canadian singer’ instead of the ‘Canadian winner’. So I missed my chance to get a photo with the ironman champion – who by the way was looking very relaxed - which is probably not surprising given he finished six hours earlier!” Annie says she’s not sure if she’ll do another, but is feeling pretty pleased to have finished this one. We salute you Annie on your incredible achievement.

Welcome Bianca Reisman We soon welcome to our staff Bianca Reisman an experienced psychologist. Bianca says “I look forward to being a part of the friendly and professional team at BSMC and to help with the psychological wellbeing of the community. Through the understanding of everyday issues that people may face I want to break down the barriers and stigma surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues. I believe in a holistic approach to counselling for issues such as anxiety and panic, depression, stress, relationship and family issues, life changes, grief and loss, and self-esteem and personal development.” After hours GP Helpline - tel. 1800 022 222 The New Woodend Star • May 2015

Extra Pap clinics offered
More women in the shire who are due for their regular cancer screening tests will be able to book in for their Pap test during extended clinics being offered for a limited time by Brooke Street Medical Centre, Gisborne Medical Centre and Ranges Medical. The extra clinics are thanks to a grant provided by PapScreen Victoria. The extra Pap test clinic times will coincide with the arrival of the BreastScreen mobile screening service in an effort to increase cervical screening rates in the area. Currently 69.5 per cent of eligible women in Gisborne are screening for cervical cancer, which is better than the state average of 60.4 per cent. Up to 90% of cervical cancer cases can be avoided with regular screening.

If you answered yes to any of the above, you may have a hearing loss.
PapScreen Nurses Marilyn, Jane and Christine for the three Medical Centres confirm that there is still work that needs to be done.
Only seven in 10 women in the Macedon Ranges are getting their regular two-yearly Pap test as recommended. A Pap test is the only way to look for abnormal changes to the cells on the cervix, which if left undetected and untreated, could develop into cervical cancer. We encourage all women who are due to make an appointment for a quick and simple Pap test today. National guidelines recommend that all women aged 18 to 70 who have ever been sexually active undergo a Pap test every two years. Regular Pap tests are recommended even after the HPV vaccine. Club of Woodend
YOU’RE INVITED TO AUTHOR’S VISIT @
Rotary at work Local Rotarians have been busy over the last few months with supporting local events, guest speakers at our meetings and social activities. Members participated in a planning session called Visioning. This will lead to the consulted development of club activities over the next few years. President Howard Bradfield was assisted by AG David Bourke for the induction of our newest member John McCausland. John and his wife Kerry have been joining the clubs walking group activities for months and attending club meetings and were warmly welcomed to Woodend Rotary. Jeremy Forbes from Hope Assistance Local Tradies (HALT) was our guest one evening to explain the program and he received significant interest from members who were all impressed with the HALT program. The Rotary club will explore the support we can offer to a Woodend HALT activity in the near future. Members were also in force to support the Wombat 100 mountain bike event by staffing marshalling points and feed stations along the course. It was a great event with over 650 participants enjoying the challenging course over 25, 50 or 100 kilometers. Club president Howard Bradfield travelled to Vanuatu with Disaster Aid Australia as a member of a response team to support recovery efforts after cyclone Pam ravaged the islands. Also in April we welcomed Ria Thompson who was sponsored by the club to attend the national Youth Science forum in Canberra over a few weeks in January. This program offers an opportunity to inspire future careers in science. We look forward to keeping in touch with Ria over the coming years to hear progress in this field. Macedon Ranges Shire Youth Programs coordinator Annie Rowland visited to discuss the array of local youth projects run by the shire, including Music in the Sticks (MITS), the Youth Engage Program, Youth Group FREEZA and Live 4 Life, just to name a few. As you can read Rotarians enjoy an array of interesting speakers and activities with the focus of helping to support our local and international communities. This month we are supporting the Woodend Mothers Day Classic event on Sunday 10th May, and have guest speakers on topics of ‘A Career in Aviation on 14th May and International Dentistry on 28th May. Members meet at the Victoria Hotel on Thursday nights from 6.45 pm and welcome visitors to all meetings. True Blue Woodend
Every year in April the Macedon Ranges Autism Network (MRAN) endeavours to increase awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) through the Macedon Ranges Light it up Blue campaign. World Autism Awareness day on April 2nd launches a month full of events in our own backyard. Each year we light a town up blue and this year the focus was on Woodend. The Woodend Clock Tower was glowing with blue lights thanks to the Woodend RSL and the Macedon Ranges Shire Council. Businesses were invited to decorate their windows in a blue theme and received information about ASD’s to display. Congratulations to the winners of the Light it Up Blue competition - Chinka Steele Lawyers and Colour Me Cooper for their fabulous displays! Events included a Professional's Breakfast at Brahms and Lizt cafe, a Mini Expo, a Family Fun Day BBQ and seminars by Chris Varney from the I Can network, and Professor Tonge and Dr Brereton.

The MRAN currently supports over 200 families in the Macedon Ranges with regular coffee mornings, dinners and social media support. The MRAN is supported by Cobaw Community Health. We currently run a Lego Brick Club for children each Wednesday afternoon of term at the Woodend Tennis club rooms. This group has been kindly sponsored by The Shared Table. We have also developed a training package to train parents to act as mentors for new families-Parents helping Parents, thanks to a Community Funding grant from the Macedon Ranges Shire Council . We have recently trained a number of teachers from school around the shire to run the Secret Agent Society Social skills program for young people aged 8-12. This evidence based program will be rolled out select schools and other community settings. In Conjunction with the Shire’s Youth Team, young people with an ASD can also attend the Youth Engagement Program at the Woodend Neighbourhood House. This group of 12-16 year olds hangout playing PlayStation, football, board games and pursuing shared interests. We are looking to start The Lab computer club in term 3. The Lab is a technology club for 10 to 16 year-old young people diagnosed with an ASD who enjoy working with computers. It offers one-to-one tuition by technology professionals in areas such as programming, 3D, digital design and gaming. We are currently seeking sponsors for this exciting project. Auditorium project for students Twenty Gisborne Secondary VET Business students have embarked on an exciting project to support a new $1.5 million auditorium at Gisborne Secondary College. The facility is being built for the whole Macedon Ranges community. The students’ goal is to raise $54,000 in order to cover the cost of the 256 seats to go into the auditorium and the plaques to be made up for sponsors of the project. As a part of their marketing plan for the project, the VET Business marketing team have identified the broader Macedon Ranges community as their target audience. In raising the profile of this project students have identified potential local users of the facility including: sporting, arts, business and community groups, and hope that they will consider donating. Local businesses and groups are recognising that this is an opportunity to have their name affiliated with a community project for years to come as their name will appear on a plaque on each seat that they sponsor. This is at the meagre cost of $275 for a link to this place that promises to be a hive of foot traffic with various cultural and community events. There will also be an opportunity for sponsors to donate lesser sums that will assist with lighting projectors and the like whilst a larger sum will provide a sponsor with a prominent place on main wall as people enter the building. It is anticipated that the auditorium will be in use in Term 4 of this year, so the project is moving along at the rate of knots. However teacher Frances Hayes says, “whilst this is a project assisting our students to gain invaluable experience in running a real life business, we hope that we do receive more support to help us achieve our goal of making $54,000. “ To sponsor, call Michelle Croxford on 54283691.

Celebrating Volunteers
At our AGM, held on 23 March, we said thank you and farewell to some long-time committee members and volunteers of the house. Janet Pearce, former Chair of the committee, and Manisha Fernando and John Damrow, both committee members and volunteers with the house, all resigned their long-held positions to pursue other journeys in life. We welcomed Glenda Fisher stepping up to the position of Chair and also new members David Hoskins, Fran Spain and Matt Gunn joined our returning committee members, Lisa Thomas, Hubert Weisrock, Terrie Hollingsworth and Donna Seary. If you are interested in being part of a dynamic committee and want to help set the direction of the House and deliver great outcomes for your community then please contact Glenda on 0418 563 692. Speaking of volunteers it is both Neighbourhood House week and Volunteer week from the 11 – 17 May, a fitting pairing, since without our fantastic volunteers we (and many other Neighbourhood Houses) wouldn’t be able to deliver the services we do. We all know that volunteers are the life blood of any community but did you know that Neighbourhood Houses are the heart? Keep an eye out for a neighbourhood house near you doing heart-filled work in your community. In Macedon Ranges there are six neighbourhood houses; Woodend, Kyneton, Lancefield, Romsey, Riddells Creek and Gisborne and they all have spaces for volunteers in their operations.

CCTV cameras to tackle illegal rubbish dumping
Macedon Ranges Shire Council is trialling CCTV cameras in areas known as hotspots for illegal rubbish dumping. The cameras are being placed in known hotspots for illegal dumping, with footage to be used by Council’s Local Laws department and Victoria Police as part of investigations. Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said that it is hoped the cameras will not only act as a deterrent but also help to catch offenders. “Cleaning up dumped rubbish costs ratepayers in excess of $50,000 each year. By installing a number of covert cameras in these locations, we hope to deter the select few who don’t do the right thing,” she said. EPA Victoria estimates that Victorian councils clean up over 33,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste each year. Reports of dumped rubbish within the Macedon Ranges have increased by almost 100 per cent this year, with Council responding to an average of 32 reports per month, up from less than two on average per month in 2014. “What is really disappointing is that often, the dumped items that are collected from the sides of roads and other locations are televisions, fridges and other recyclables that are actually accepted free of charge at Council’s transfer stations,” Cr Anderson said. CCTV cameras will be installed at various hotspot locations across the shire, along with signage during May. Council will regularly review the locations of the cameras and relocate if necessary. The illegal dumping of rubbish is a criminal offence and people can face fines up to $8,857 if caught. “We are urging residents to keep an eye out and report illegal rubbish dumping in an effort to help us clean up our roadsides, waterways and other locations across the shire,” Cr Anderson said. Residents can report dumped rubbish to Council on 5422 0333 or contact EPA Victoria’s 24 hour hotline on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC). Residents who witness illegal dumping are encouraged to note the time and location of the offence, vehicle registration numbers and descriptions of suspected offenders if possible.

Basketball success stories at all levels! The summer season in Woodend finished with a series of excellent grand finals on 22 March. Congratulations to local teams - the Fantastics, the Lakers, the Avengers and the Ranges - for winning their games. Congratulations also to the four Woodend Hawks teams who made their grand finals in the Sunbury Basketball Association competition, with three teams returning to town as premiers. Go Hawks! In a first for Woodend basketball, local talent, Nick Grantham (pictured below right), has been selected for the 2015 U16 Country Victoria Men’s Team which will play at the National Championships in Tasmania in July. We wish Nick all the very best for the competition. His selection to the squad is an incredible achievement in itself.
Over the Easter holidays three Macedon Ranges representative teams – which included many players from Woodend – took part in the Victorian Country Basketball Championships. The U12 Girls (pictured below left ) were runners up in Division 2 while the U12 Boys and U14 Girls made it to the semi-finals in Division 3. Well done to all the players on the excellent standard of play and many thanks to the coaches, managers and parents who supported this incredible opportunity for the players. And for tomorrow’s basketball stars, Megan Moody from Basketball Victoria Country visited Woodend Primary to run basketball sessions. Megan played in the WNBA and she has played throughout Europe and in the Great Britain Olympic team. We hope to see some of the children inspired by Megan’s visit join our Aussie Hoops programs this term. Woodend’s winter basketball competition has just kicked off at the end of April so it’s not too late to register if you’re keen to join in the local competitions. We cater for every age from 5 to 90! Take The Cfa Home Safety Quiz The official Summer Fire Danger Period has ended, but that does not mean the fire danger period is over. While we attend most of our bush, grass and scrub fires over the warmer months, the CFA attends more structural fires (such as houses and sheds) in the cooler months. This is the time when people start using their fires, heaters and electric blankets again. Answer these 20 questions. 1. Is there a smoke alarm in your home? Do you test it every month?
2. Do you replace the battery annually or when the low battery alarm activates? 3. Is your house number easy to see so emergency vehicles can find you? 4. Have you placed the emergency phone number beside all your phones? 5. Has your household made and practised a home fire escape plan? 6. Have you planned a safe meeting place outside? 7. Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home? 8. Is your home protected by an electrical safety switch? 9. Are the keys kept in or near exits with deadlocks? 10. Do you always have electrical repairs, alterations or renovations done by a qualified electrician? 11. Do you avoid overloading power points? 12. Are flammable liquids stored away from heaters, hot water service pilot lights and other naked flames? 13. Do you avoid pouring flammable liquids in high risk areas – such
as refuelling a lawn mower near a hot water service? 14. Is your electric blanket switched off before you get into bed? 15. Do you always use a fire screen with an open fire? 16. Are heating appliances kept safely away from laundry, curtains and furniture? 17. Are matches and cigarette lighters kept out of the way of children? 18. Do you clean the lint filter of your clothes dryer after each load? 19. Does everyone know the cold water first aid treatment for burns? 20. Is there clear access for CFA trucks to get close to your house – at least 4 metres wide x 4 metres high?
How did you score? Every YES scores a point! • Less than 10 – The potential for fire in your household is dangerously high. You need to be more than fire aware. • 10 to 15 – Not bad. But there are still several things you can do to decrease the likelihood of a fire. •16 to 20 – Well done! You are giving yourself the best chance of protecting your life and property from house fire.

Many letters were written home from the General Hospital in Alexandria, by those lucky to survive their wounds received at Gallipoli. One such letter was by Private Harvey Newnham to his sister, Mrs W Adams of Newham in July 1915. "When this reaches you I guess you will know the circumstances over which I had no control compelled me to leave one leg at the front. I don't feel as if I had lost a leg, though, and am in the best of health and spirits. Except when my leg is being dressed, I suffer very little pain and can sleep well. Here we get very well looked after, and the ladies of the town bring in fruit, papers and writing gear...... In my trip to 'kill the Kaiser", I came off second best, but I wouldn't have missed my bit of soldiering for anything. We were drawing the Turks fire, and were about 100 yards in front of our unit's firing line, when I was hit by a shell. Fortunately I was able to keep calm, and turned around and dragged myself back towards the trenches. It is surprising how quickly one's strength goes. My leg was badly shattered, and seemed to weigh a ton. I could not guide it, either, through the scrub, and the foot was very much in the way. I went about twenty yards, and was about done, when a couple of plucky mates encouraged me to go a few yards further to them.

The “Gascon” waits off Anzac Cove ready to take the injured aboard
Then I caught hold of their shoulders, and they dragged me about 50 yards to the trench. We had to climb through our barbed-wire, and our progress was slow. All the time we were under heavy fire. From this trench I had another fifteen minutes journey in an oil sheet along a narrow zigzag trench to the rear. The doctor put my leg in splints, and sent me to the beach station. This trip of about a mile was made under the fire of the long-distance snipers, and for about 200 yards on the beach a couple of shells came very close. On the beach they operated right away, and the first thing I knew I was on a barge being towed to the hospital ship.” Harvey Newnham returned to Australia in 1916, married in 1918 and lived until 1953 when he died aged sixty three in Cowes, Victoria.
