NYC Health & Hospitals/Metropolitan and the 23 rd Precinct, New York City Police Department
Plaque presented to the staff of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan by the Officers of the 23rd Precinct, New York City Police Department 1975
The plaque on display here was originally presented to the staff of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan in 1975 to thank them for saving the lives of three critically injured officers of the New York City Police Department
On the morning of January 2 1974, Probationary Patrolman
Thomas J Byrne was rushed to Metropolitan after receiving severe stab wounds to the face and abdomen during an altercation After five hours in the emergency room, Patrolman Byrne’s life and vision were saved A visit to Metropolitan to console Patrolman Byrne’s distraught family was among the first official acts of Mayor Abraham Beame who had been sworn in as mayor earlier that morning
A second major incident came on the evening of December 11 1974 22-year-old Probationary Patrolman Angel Poggi, an hour from concluding his first tour of duty with the 23rd Precinct, was lured by a false report to an abandoned building whose entry had been booby-trapped with a bomb He was critically injured by the explosion Over the next forty-eight hours, staff at Metropolitan fought to stabilize Patrolman Poggi’s condition Two days later, he was taken off the critical list Although he lost vision in one eye, his life had been saved
On the evening of July 13, 1975
Lieutenant Raymond Manners, acting commander of the Police Department’s hostage negotiation unit, suffered a severe heart attack during a negotiation on 111th Street and was treated at Metropolitan
These were just three of the lives saved by Metropolitan in the mid1970 Since moving from Roosevelt Island to East Harlem in 1955 Metropolitan Hospital has been a crucial center of medical care at the heart of East Harlem, providing care for all New Yorkers who pass through its doors
Accompanied by a New York Police Department officer, a patient arrives at Metropolitan’s emergency department Metropolitan Hospital Center Annual Report, 1974
