NEW YORK MEDICAL COLLEGE
2
Welcome!
On behalf of the entire New York Medical College community, we are honored to welcome you to the 2015 Founder’s Dinner. Your generous support of this dinner and your presence here this evening signal your strong partnership with New York Medical College and your belief in its ability to improve our world. Institutions cannot progress without the help of many partners, and New York Medical College is no exception. In fact, it has been through numerous strong partnerships that the College has advanced its mission throughout its 155-year history. That is why we are so excited about New York Medical College’s partnership with the Touro College and University System under the leadership of Alan Kadish, M.D., president, and of Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer. The opportunities that this partnership presents for continuing growth and increased excellence hold great promise for the College’s future. Tonight we are honoring three individuals who embody the spirit of committed partnership and distinguished leadership that lie at the heart of the College’s mission and success. The Jackson E. Spears Community Service Award is bestowed upon individuals or organizations who have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment to their communities. This year the award will honor Ansley Bacon, Ph.D., a New York Medical College faculty member and an outstanding leader in the field of developmental disabilities for more than 35 years. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual who has helped advance the College’s mission of education and research though service, commitment and expert ability. This year’s award will be presented to Bijan Safai, M.D., D.Sc., professor and chairman of NYMC’s Department of Dermatology, who has performed extensive research in the areas of skin cancer and the AIDS epidemic. The William Cullen Bryant Award recognizes individuals who, in the tradition of the College’s founder William Cullen Bryant, demonstrate distinguished leadership in health care, science, education, business or the arts. It will be presented to NYMC alumnus John C. Duffy, M.D. ’60, a man who has worn many notable hats within the field of medicine including U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, child psychiatrist and public health leader. We are delighted to have this opportunity to recognize these individuals and all they have accomplished on behalf of this institution at this gala occasion. Once again, thank you for helping to advance New York Medical College’s mission through your generous support of the Founder’s Dinner. We look forward to maintaining our partnership with each of you as the College continues to evolve as one of the finest health sciences universities in the country. With our deepest gratitude and best wishes for a wonderful evening,

THE FOUNDER’S DINNER 2015
The Jackson E. Spears Community Service
Award
The Jackson E. Spears Community Service Award is bestowed upon those individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment to our communities. It was created in 2000 to honor Jackson E. Spears, who served as a member of New York Medical College’s Board of Trustees for 60 years, from 1943 to 2003. Loyal, steadfast, sharp-witted, selfless, practical, wise and relentless in his promotion of the College and its mission, Mr. Spears was a member of virtually every Board committee during his tenure, frequently serving as chairman. He served as vice chairman of the Board from 1956 to 1964 and chairman from 1965 to 1970, and he was appointed acting president of the College twice. He also provided pivotal leadership in the decision to relocate the College from New York City to Valhalla in the early 1970s. A native of Dallas, Texas, Mr. Spears was a corporate executive in the textile industry until his retirement from Burlington Industries as a vice president in 1961. Throughout his career, he was also active in civic and community service. New York Medical College awarded Mr. Spears the first William Cullen Bryant medal and the Distinguished Service Award as well as honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and Doctor of Science degrees. The College continues to honor this valuable member of our community, who passed away in 2003.

Ansley Bacon, Ph.D. Ansley (Andy) Bacon, Ph.D., the recipient of New York Medical College’s 2015 Jackson E. Spears Community Service Award, received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in psychology at Western Michigan University and her Ph.D. in educational psychology from West Virginia University. She served as the director of the University Center on Disability in Mississippi from 1978-1985 before moving to New York to serve as the head of the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) from 1985 – 2015. WIHD is an independent center, providing comprehensive outpatient clinical care, teaching and research to support people with disabilities and vulnerable children to live healthy, productive, and independent lives. Under Dr. Bacon’s leadership, WIHD became one of the leading University Centers for Excellence in Disabilities in the country. WIHD is located on the NYMC campus, and the two organizations have had a strong academic and clinical affiliation for over 60 years. Dr. Bacon has been a member of the NYMC faculty in the School of Health Sciences and Practice and in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences since 1985. Additionally, she served on numerous NYMC search committees, task forces, and academic committees. Dr. Bacon has also been a leader in the broader disability field throughout her career. She was awarded the prestigious Kennedy Public Policy Fellowship in Disability Policy and took a oneyear sabbatical to work in the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Disability Policy in 1993-1994, where she helped lead the reauthorization of the Developmental Disabilities Act. She served as President of the national Association of University Centers on Disability (AUCD) in 1987, and served as chair and member of the AUCD Legislative Affairs Committee for more than 20 years. For the past 30 years, she served in various leadership roles on the NYS Developmental Disability Council. All of her work has been guided by her belief that people with disabilities have the right to live independently, make choices, contribute to society, and fully participate in all aspects of their community.

Bijan Safai, M.D., D.Sc. Bijan Safai, M.D., D.Sc., the recipient of New York Medical College’s 2015 Distinguished Service Award, received his medical degree from Tehran University, School of Medicine, Tehran, Iran. He trained in internal medicine and dermatology at NYU Medical School, and completed a fellowship in immunology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). Dr. Safai’s work in immunology earned him a degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences (D.Sc.) from the University of Gutenberg, Sweden. He continued his career at MSKCC where he established a dermatology program to include research, education and patient care. During his tenure, he developed programs for the management of various skin cancers, lymphoma of the skin and Kaposi’s Sarcoma. He instituted a skin cancer screening initiative for the employees of MSKCC, which was adopted for the City of New York, and earned him a citation from the mayor of the City of New York. In 1978, Dr. Safai was appointed chief of dermatology at MSKCC, where he was then able to expand his program to include specific research and clinical projects for various skin cancers, lymphoma of the skin, and Kaposi’s Sarcoma. His early work on Kaposi’s Sarcoma led him to be among the initial investigators of the AIDS epidemic. Among his other scientific contributions are: participation in the initial identification of the AIDS virus: HIV, use of interferon in the treatment of AIDS related Kaposi’s Sarcoma, and initial publication of the serological testing for the AIDS virus. Dr. Safai served as the chief of dermatology service and director of its research program at MSKCC for over 19 years, and was promoted to the rank of professor at Cornell Medical College in 1984. In 1993, Dr. Safai accepted the position of professor and chairman of the Department of Dermatology at New York Medical College where he has since been involved with the education and training of dermatology residents and medical students. Dr. Safai designed a well-defined curriculum, and focused on standardizing the training program to meet the requirements of the Residency Review Committee. He further expanded the program to include new management and therapeutic modalities for patientcare and dermatology training. Dr. Safai was elected president and chairman of the Board of Directors of PAGNY (Physician Affiliate Group of New York, P.C.). He has published more than 200 articles, reviews and book chapters. His book Immunodermatology, published in 1981, defined the discipline and focused more attention on the relation between dermatology and immunology. Dr. Safai has served on the NIH/NCI study sections, a variety of task forces and intramural review groups of NIH/NCI. He held the position of president of the New York Dermatology Society and was the chairman of the New York Academy of Medicine, dermatology section. He has received multiple national and international awards for excellence in his work. 9

The William Cullen Bryant
Award
New York Medical College established the William Cullen Bryant Award in 1983 to recognize those remarkable individuals who, in the tradition of the College’s founder, William Cullen Bryant, demonstrate seminal leadership in health care, science, education, business or the arts. Bryant, the son of a physician, was an editor, philosopher, poet, lawyer, and dynamic civic leader who substantively influenced the issues of his day through the power of his pen. During the second half of the 19th century, he led a select group of influential individuals in creating New York Medical College, which today has become one of the nation’s largest private health sciences colleges. Bryant subsequently served as president of the College’s Board of Trustees for more than a decade and was the medical school’s first president. The qualities of distinguished and broad leadership that Bryant demonstrated have been characteristic of all William Cullen Bryant medal awardees.
