As a national leader in children’s services, The New York Public Library is the go-to destination for young readers. Our libraries are made up of 91 locations in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island and include 15 with new or recently renovated children’s centers and five with teen centers. The Library offers thousands of programs and activities for children and teens each month, from story time, arts and crafts, and book discussions to science and art workshops, homework and college-prep help, and more. Explore the free events listed here to discover a broad range of activities for children in an environment that inspires creativity, exploration, and intellectual growth.

An Erik Woods Workshop: Animals

The Hobbit

Wendy Windstorm has accidentally blown all the poetry out of Poetsville! Travel with Wendy and meet poetic puppet creatures who sing songs about the key elements of poetry. Children also write poems of their own! Presented by Urban Stages. For ages 6 and older.

Create 3-D mixed-media sculptures of wild creatures using recyclable computer parts and other materials. For ages 4 and older. Limited to 12 participants.

Visit the Original Winnie-the-Pooh at NYPL! Pooh and His Friends Stephen A. Schwarzman Building Children’s Center at 42nd Street You won’t find the real Winnie-thePooh in a movie or on a T-shirt, but you will find him—and his friends Eeyore, Piglet, Kanga, and Tigger— at The New York Public Library’s main children’s room! Anyone can visit Pooh and his pals at the Children’s Center at 42nd Street in NYPL’s landmark Schwarzman Building. Pooh, who turned 90 years old last year, originally belonged to Christopher Robin Milne. His father, author A.A. Milne, wrote many adventures for the beloved bear and his friends, which millions of children and adults have read and loved in When We Were Very Young, Winniethe-Pooh, The House at Pooh Corner, and other books. Children from around the world visit the stuffed toys every day. Stop by and say hello to Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, Kanga, and Tigger—they’re always happy to see kids and their families!

Special Opportunity for Teachers: 2013 Summer Institute at the Cullman Center Institute for Teachers Open to full-time teachers, school librarians, and administrators (priority is given to public school teachers in the New York metropolitan area), the Summer Seminars offer teachers a chance to enrich their understanding of the humanities and conduct research in one of the world’s great libraries. Participants take classes with former fellows of the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the landmark 42nd Street building of The New York Public Library and receive all required books and materials, a private office, breakfast and lunch each day, and a $300 stipend.

This summer’s classes are: Drawing 101 with artist Gary Panter July 15–19; 9 am–5 pm Political Cinema and the “Other” with film director and screenwriter Shimon Dotan July 22–26; 9 am–5 pm Inventing Your Voice: A Creative Writing Workshop with novelist John Wray July 29–August 2; 9 am–5 pm Applications are available at nypl.org/cullmanteachers; the application deadline is Monday, April 22, 2013.

I See Freedom: A Play Harriet Tubman was a runaway slave, cook, nurse, resistance leader, spy, abolitionist, and Underground Railroad conductor. Tubman escaped to freedom yet returned to the cradle of slavery time and again to free more than 300 slaves. This play, staged by Shades of Truth Theatre, celebrates Tubman’s life, heroism, and legacy. Presented in collaboration with Community Matters NYC, a new initiative of Community Works.
