companions that never let us down – our
furry friends. As animal lovers ourselves, we
feel personally connected to all of the animal-related content in this issue, and there’s quite a bit of it. Horses and dogs galore! As the mommy of a rescue dog, one of my favorite slogans is the one I always see on bumper stickers: “I love my rescue dog. And by the way, who saved who?” Animals have the capacity to help us when no one else can, when we need it the most. Sometimes, all that means is giving us a good laugh with their goofy ways and crazy antics.
Classic coming soon, we’d like to honor the animals – all of the
animals – who enrich our lives in every way. Thanks for reading! Yours truly,

alk through the doors of Eleven Madison, and you feel instantly transported to a whole new world – somewhere between the East End, a rustic country cottage and a chic downtown loft. Carol Major, the owner, successfully created a gemfilled, cozy antique store in the heart of Sag Harbor. She hand-picks the items at estate sales and auctions. She also acquires some through her many contacts in the decorating and remodeling industries (she was a marketer in the Manhattan fashion business for 35 years and the founder of clothing company, Prosecco).
Needlepoint throw pillows made by Carol Major, $250 and up.
Most of what is sold are originals, surefire conversation pieces or inspiring antiques. Having the right pieces from the past in your home can add personality and a bit of magic to any space. Eleven Madison, centrally located on Madison St., is the perfect place to get a summer antiquing fix, without ever having to leave town.

Indulge a little… in fitness! Rich Decker, owner of Sag Harbor’s Studio 89, shares tips on how to enjoy yourself this summer and stay in the best shape of your life! By CHELSEA KATE ISAACS & ROMAN KHUTORYANSKY Photography by JOHN MUSNICKI
W
aking up to an extravagant brunch, barbecuing at sunset, going out for dinner…
NYS: Where did the Studio 89 slogan “U R The Machine” come from? RD: “U R The Machine” comes from the fact that we use suspension gravity and free weight training (hence no machines) for better results.
There’s no question that food is a major part of summer in the Hamptons. With temptations around every corner, what can we do to stay in shape? Fortunately, just knowing a few easy lifestyle strategies can allow us to have fun and look great, too. Rich Decker, fitness expert and owner of Sag Harbor’s exclusive Studio 89, still indulges in the area’s mouthwatering local summer fare. But, here’s another one of his must-have indulgences: Living a healthy Hamptons lifestyle. Translation? Stay active! Staying active doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice a day of fun in the sun for a long, indoor session at the gym. Instead, Decker recommends a few local things to do that will leave you with fond memories, plus a toned and trim body. New York Smash: What are some exciting natural outdoor activities that will burn calories and keep us fit? Rich Decker: Paddleboarding is all over the Hamptons this summer. It’s a great full-body work out! It’s an extreme core workout that also works your upper body while using stability muscles in your legs. And of course, there is always The Pit at Studio 89, which will test your limits!
24
NYS: Are there any natural supplements or foods that are essential to staying fit? Where can we find them? RD: Estia’s Little Kitchen in Sag Harbor has an amazing menu that is full of their own freshly-grown vegetables. I always add avocado, which has 20 essential nutrients, including fiber, potassium, Vitamin E, B-Vitamins and folic acid. They also act as a “nutrient booster” by enabling the body to absorb more fat-soluble nutrients. NYS: Natural meal supplement bars are very popular these days. Are there any that you would recommend? RD: “Your Body Your Life” bars are great! They are full of protein, vitamins, antioxidants, omega 3’s, fruits and vegetables. Something this healthy shouldn’t taste so good! NYS: How do you keep your looks throughout the years? RD: Working out has always been a part of my life. I eat well and believe in a well-balanced lifestyle. Also, I’ll have a Richie Decker every now and then, which is 1 part vodka, 2 parts champagne, a splash of cranberry juice and OJ. NYS: What quote do you live by? RD: The only easy day was yesterday!

BEAUTY & STYLE TRENDS OF THE EAST END
Want to know the hottest Hamptons hair and beauty trends of the summer? Just ask style expert, John Dillon, owner of Southampton’s exclusive John Dillon Salon & Day Spa.
–– THE THEME: “Comfort and ease is the way to go – The 70’s trend – is what’s hot this summer in the Hamptons!” –– HAMPTONS HAIR AND STYLE: “This summer, the hottest style is a natural wave to hair – think ‘straight from the beach’. For fashion, it’s about fun floppy hats, loose-fitting clothes and sun dresses – think Bohemian.” –– MAKEUP: “For day time, less is more. Go with natural tinted moisturizer with SPF. Try sheer lip gloss with a slight hint of color. Pinks and berries are the hot colors. For night, go with a smoky eye and neutral lips.” –– ACCESSORIES: “Big shades to protect your eyes. Think Jackie O.” –– FOR MEN: “Messy, short to medium length hair is the trend in the Hamptons. Use molding mud and go!” – John Dillon 26

JOHN DILLON’S
FAVORITE MOST TIPS AND
EFFECTIVE
SKIN PROTECTION Use moisturizer with at least SPF 30 or higher. Zinc or titanium active ingredients are best for full spectrum coverage. Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure to be active. EYE BROWS With light hair, go with liner that is two shades darker on the brows than your own hair. Also, a great shape makes all the difference, so see a professional. For smaller eyes, use light colors for the lid and brow bone. Contour and define the crease of the eye with a darker color. This will make the eyes stand out. LIPS Always use lip liner --- it’s a girl’s best friend. It will correct any imperfections. To enhance the fullness of lips, take the lip liner and follow just above the vermilion (the line between the lip and the skin). HAIR Detangle the hair with Sojourn Detangler. Use a sulfate-free shampoo to avoid stripping the natural oils from your hair. Before taking a plunge in the pool, seal in color by slathering on water and a little conditioner. The oxidized metals in your pool may turn hair a pretty shade of green (haha). NAILS Here’s how to get the most out of your Manicure! Push your cuticles back with water and moisturize your hands and feet at night with oil. To keep your nails from drying out, remove polish weekly. BODY Get massaged with every season. Using a good body scrub and a little olive oil from home will smooth your skin. SKIN CARE Collagen stimulating serum is our pick of the month for the fountain of youth! REMEMBER… Beauty starts from within! Enjoy your summer!

BOLD AS
AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ELAINE HENDRIX
It is Saturday afternoon in the Hollywood hills and we are weaving through the canyon roads. The cliffs fall beside us, just a few feet from the car’s tires. We arrive in front of a sprawling ranch home surrounded by lush jungle greenery and slowswaying trees. There is a faint smell of wild mountain flowers and a gust of desert wind as we stand at the doorstep of the house. A few staccato barks are heard from inside, and just then, an effortlessly beautiful blond opens the door. She has a warm smile and two grinning furry dogs at her feet. 33
R
ight away, I am surprised that she looks just as she does in the movies. And the same recognizable charisma that she holds on screen exists also in real-life.
Elaine Hendrix is an actress that reaffirms the belief that there is something truly special about Hollywood actresses. After all, in addition to being in movies, Elaine Hendrix is in the trenches. In the trenches saving animals, that is. When she isn’t shooting films and TV shows, Hendrix sets out on rescue missions to save animals in dire circumstances throughout the nation. She helped launch an animal rescue organization, Animal Rescue Corps. Since then, she has devoted much of her free time to propel the organization to success, which includes strapping on her Animal Rescue Corps uniform to set out on an animal rescue mission. Hendrix is famous for a number of performances, including her role as the evil stepmom in the kid’s classic The Parent Trap, the queen bee cheerleader in Superstar, as well as the parts she played in What The Bleep Do We Know and Beverly Hills Chihuahua, to name a few. She just finished a comedy called General Education with Janeane Garofalo and Larry Miller, expected to release in 2012. Plus, she has three more projects in development.
EH: Animal Rescue Corps was started to primarily conduct large scale res-
cues – meaning, we provide the A-Z needs for assisting law officials and communities with hundreds of animals that need to be rescued out of abusive or neglectful situations. Most cities and counties are not equipped to handle that many animals in an emergency situation. We are. We also conduct investigations, offer shelter assessments and teach rescue trainings. It’s powerful work. Yes, I’m in the trenches. I work on the business side of the organization as well as the rescue team. It’s the reason I helped to found ARC. I want to be on the inside and want to be affecting change directly. This way I know for sure that can happen, and I’m a happy woman for it. Basically I kick ass and take names! As for the most memorable rescues – that would have to be my own personal pack. Taking animals off the street and giving them a safe, forever home; there’s nothing like it. I’ve done it many times now, and I’ll be doing it the rest of my life. Rescued animals know they have been saved. They form a special connection that is unlike any other.
NYS:
You are gorgeous on screen and so talented. You have said many times that, because you have a professional dance background, you put a lot of physicality into your acting performances. Speaking of “physical,” we must ask: How do you stay in such amazing shape? You haven’t changed one bit over the years! Please give us some exercise/diet advice, or “stay healthy, happy and gorgeous” advice of any kind!
But, when we spoke to her, it was clear that performing is just one of her true passions in life. Hendrix shared stories of how animals have touched her heart, and what she’s learned along the way about how to stay healthy, happy and beautiful, inside and out.
NYS: Where were you in your life when you rescued your two dogs, and what is the story behind those two?
EH: Well, these two, are just two of the six I have at the moment. Their full stories are way too long to go into with any detail, but I’ll say this... I turned my life upside down for these babies, and I’m so grateful I did. They each came across my path years apart and in different ways: Tiloc (b&w Cattle Dog) I took from a couple who wasn’t going to keep her anymore back in ‘99, and Rossmore (white Jindo) I literally picked up off the street in ‘06. They each have their own personalities and needs. I was living in an apartment and then a house. I was single, then in a relationship, and then out of a relationship. I have cats and other dogs. I travel constantly, work all the time and I miss them like crazy. I spend as much time with them as possible. They are well cared for and respected as animals even though they’re my “children.” We’ve been through it all...and I wouldn’t change a thing.
NYS: That is amazing that you launched your own animal organiza-
tion -- Animal Rescue Corps. We heard that your organization specializes in large rescue operations, where a large number of animals in need are saved at a time. How do these operations work?
34
EH: Wow. Well, first, thank you. I think
I take very good care of myself, so I appreciate hearing that it shows. I have been an athlete my whole life. My most favorite form being dance. (Not only is it an art form, but it is very much an athletic activity.) I am a classically trained dancer and still get to class when I can. Having dogs to walk also helps. Then, for fun I like to hike and kayak when I can. I love nature and being out in it is probably the best way I take care of myself. As for diet, I eat very well - primarily vegan and vegetarian when vegan isn’t an option. I don’t drink many soft drinks – haven’t had a Coke since 1982. And I spend a good deal of time taking care of my emotional & spiritual life through Buddhist chanting, Transcendental Meditation and a strong support system of family and friends. I firmly believe wellness is an inside out job.
NYS: You have also chosen to be a part of deeper, more intellectual projects like “What The Bleep Do We Know.” What about life inspires you the most? What is your biggest goal right now?
EH: Wow, thank you! I need to hang out with you all more often. What a boost for myself esteem! You know it’s funny, I don’t always see myself the way others do and I think that’s typical of human nature. I can be so hard on myself thinking that I haven’t done enough, haven’t accomplished what I wanted, don’t have what I need, etc. Thankfully, I’m aware enough to know
Rescued animals know they have been saved. They form a special connection that is unlike any other.
35
that when those ideas start creeping into my mind, I’m engaging in some unhealthy thinking, usually comparing myself to others, minimizing myself, or not owning my own power. I have an innate thirst for truth and growth/creation. I think that is what motivates and inspires me the most. So, for me, it’s kinda like putting a jigsaw puzzle together and I love puzzles; what qualities do I want and/or need to cultivate in my life that bring authenticity and creativity/expansion to it? My biggest goals right now are to ensure the success of Animal Rescue Corps and to be happy in a deeper way than I’ve ever been in my life. I know it’s no accident they are happening at the same time. Life is actually so simple and we humans complicate the crap out of it. So, one of my goals is about helping the world with its complications, and the other is about helping myself with mine. I think it can actually be summed up in one word: compassion.
NYS: In New York and LA, many of us live in apartments. Would you recommend rescuing and adopting a pet in this kind of setting?
EH: Absolutely! It’s not so much about where you live as it is about what
lifestyle you have. I’ve met many homeless people who are wonderful, loving animal guardians, and conversely I’ve met many large home owners who completely neglect their companions. I recommend looking at what kind of work and social schedule you have, what’s your budget, how high or low is your commitment capacity, how responsible are you, etc. Maybe you’re not set up or ready for a dog, but how about a cat or a fish? Maybe your allergic to cats, so how about a turtle or a hamster? You can always sponsor an animal if you don’t want to be a guardian to one. Just know that whoever you bring into your life, it’s for the rest of theirs, so do so wisely. The shelters don’t need any more homeless animals.

The
Equestrian life an artistic adventure with lynn matsuoka
An internationally-known artist unveils works of art inspired by Hamptons polo and horse shows. Lynn Matsuoka (Photo portrait by Keith Barker) By chelsea kate isaacs
When Lynn Matsuoka
arrived at her new Bridgehampton home five years ago, she welcomed a new sense of tranquility into her life. Before then, Matsuoka had spent over 37 years in Japan living the life of a famous artist, recognized for her unique ability to beautifully sketch and paint the sacred Sumo wrestling and Geisha cultures. “No one else has spent their career documenting them in such an extensive body of work. I was always on TV or in the magazines, talking about my work, or the latest Sumo news or big star. Many people came through my studio every weekend, and my life was both exciting and demanding,” Matsuoka said. Matsuoka, a Long Island native, said that she had an undeniable attraction to the mysterious world of Sumo. “It’s not that I’m so brilliant, it’s that I was working with the stars of Sumo and the stars of Kabuki, and to me, they’re the most beautiful people I’ve ever seen. They invited me in because they loved my art, and I was there ever since...” She explained. While her work in Sumo remains popular, Matsuoka is now turning heads with her new niche: equestrian art. Watching horses in action, whether on the polo field or jumping in a horse show, ignited a creative spark in Matsuoka. She has spent the past

several years attending equestrian events often, where she is known to sketch exceptionally accurate images of her subjects in five minutes flat. In the late months of summer, with the spirit of polo and the Hampton Classic upon us, Matsuoka chats with New York Smash about her exciting artistic reportage of equestrian life. Matsuoka is available for commissioned portraits of horses and their owners. To learn more about Matsuoka’s art, visit www.hamptonsartist.com
New York Smash: Will you be at the Hampton Classic? Lynn Matsuoka: I had a booth there for two years. We live right nearby, so now I go every day to do drawings of the horses and riders, and the general atmosphere. I will have a lot of that work in my exhibition over Labor Day weekend in Sag Harbor. NYS: What’s it like to be an artist in the Hamptons? LM: After returning from Tokyo to a place where I was not well known (here), it was encouraging to find people who are savvy and sophisticated, and who appreciate the value of my artwork.
NYS: What IS IT about the Hamptons THAT inspires you artistically? LM: The light, peaceful and green horse farms everywhere. Rainy days or sunny, there is a serenity. At the end of the day, the light is gorgeous – sitting on the deck, watching the birds and deer in the garden, is inspirational and renewing. NYS: As an artist, how does polo inspire you to paint? What about the sport sparks your imagination and creativity? What makes polo a good “muse”? LM: As a reportage artist, I work mainly with theater and sports. My skill and interest is in capturing people and horses in action as well as repose. The grace of the horses’ movements with the counterpoint of the polo players’ moves gives me a lot to work with. Their costume is also a great added graphic. “Polo Before The Storm” $1,800 11” x 14” Oil & Graphite on archival paper, done on location.
I find that working with subjects of great energy instills me and my work with that energy and the tremendous energy of polo positively energizes my work. NYS: Your specialty is drawing people and horses in action, quickly and accurately. Please tell us more about how you acquired this skill, how you›ve fine-tuned it, and what excites you about it? LM: I was always drawing as a child, but developed the ability to do the very quick drawing, or ‘reportage’, through my studies with the great Jack Potter at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Then I went to Tokyo and spent 24/7 in the dressing rooms of the Sumo wrestlers and the great Kabuki actors, documenting their lives in drawings and paintings. I got better every day to the point that I can capture
someone doing just about anything in a matter of minutes, or even seconds. People are amazed when they watch me, but so am I! Quick drawings I do of my subjects, “How They Met” $3,200 18” x 22” Mixed Media & Montage on Prepared Paper.

even from the back, if you can’t see their face, are still perfectly identifiable. Jack taught me how to see what I am looking at, and then transpose that to the page. What is particularly exciting about this is when I show someone a finished portrait of themselves, their loved one, their horse or their pet dog, not only does it look like the subject, but I am told that it “feels’ like the person or animal. This is something that comes in on a level quite apart from cerebral observation. I can’t explain it, but if someone’s energy is open, then I can capture them more fully in the portrait. If the subject is more guarded, that affects the outcome as well.

Intrigued by its upscale appearance and island tiki torches out front, we made a quick U turn. We are so happy we did. Actress Anna Anisimova in The Whistleblower and beyond
By CHELSEA KATE ISAACS // Photographer: MARK LEVANT // Hair: YANNI BOYIATZIS // Makeup: MARIYA SHRAYMAN Stylist: VON VONNI // Dress by VON VONNI
Photo shoot with Anna Anisimova took place at WHISKEY BLUE in NYC.
50
I
t was approximately five past noon when I walked briskly through the lunch crowds on Lexington, and found myself in front of Whiskey Blue.
Standing just outside of the entrance, I peered through the sheer white curtained windows. I could vaguely make out a few outlined figures inside of the lounge, where we were all to meet for a photo shoot. It was still early – as I strolled inside, I expected to see
only members of the shoot’s crew. But, instead, there was Anna Anisimova – patiently waiting, perfectly on time and smiling warmly upon my arrival. Instantly, I was very pleased to meet Anna. After all, it’s quite hard not to be fond of a person who seems to thoroughly appreciate your presence. But, it wasn’t just my presence that Anna seemed to appreciate. It was the entire experience.

The experience of being there, meeting new people and learning new things is still something that tremendously appeals to Anna Anisimova, despite the fact that she’s a tremendously experienced individual, to say the least. When she was merely a sophomore at New York University in 2005, Anna made headlines after making a few purchases: a $10 million Time Warner condo, Diane Von Furstenberg’s $23 million Village townhouse and a $550,000 Hamptons summer rental. Anna’s father happens to be one of the wealthiest Russian businessmen in the world, according to Forbes. And by every definition of the word, Anna is a billionaire heiress. But let’s revisit the humble, quiet and sweet Anna I first met – the expression on her face that made any gossip blog posts or Google results I may have found about her real estate expenditures, and former days of dancing at clubs with Paris Hilton – completely irrelevant. Here’s what is actually relevant about Anna Anisimova: the priceless assets she seems to innately possess – genuine character, a surprisingly hard-working spirit and the inner drive of a race horse. Five years ago, Anna committed to a decision – to buckle down in Los Angeles in order to pursue her dream of becoming a serious actress. Since then, she put her socialite status aside to invest every moment taking acting classes and constantly auditioning. Now, happily married (since her Waldorf-Astoria wedding in late November), Anna has already been in three films: The Whistleblower, with Rachel Weisz, Father of Invention, with Kevin Spacey, and a dark indie called Flutter. “I love dark roles,” she says, with spontaneous enthusiasm. “I like characters that have complexities and things you have to figure out.” This summer, Anna splits her time between auditioning in Los Angeles and spending time with family and friends at her home in Water Mill. Whether she’s out east or in the west, Anna’s earnestness will be keenly noticed, whether on the silver screen or by anyone who has the opportunity to personally meet her. Her personality, out of all things, is surely worth the most.

ABOUT
ANNA
>>IDOL: “My grandmother. She is 88-years-old and one of the most amazing people I have ever met. She had a very hard life. Served 15 years in a labor camp. Lost two daughters and a husband. I look at her now and she is so strong, spiritual and full of life. I hope to have her strength and courage.” >>ACTING: “The most exciting thing about being an actress is constantly learning about yourself and going on a new adventure with every film. The scariest thing is that you spend months of your life learning about your character, reading, researching, figuring out how to best portray her. You put your heart and soul into it. Then, you wait with uncertainty to the reaction of others, which makes you feel extremely vulnerable. I think every artist questions their abilities once in a while.” >>DAILY INSPIRATION: “I wake up every morning and always read the puppet by Gabrielle Garcia Marquez – it’s a beautiful farewell poem. I try to accept that we are not in control of the outcome but we can do everything to have a great journey. So, just knowing that inspires me to be my best just for that one day.” >>FINDING HER PASSION: “I had to find what I really loved and things became easier. I tried a lot of things --- I had a cosmetic company, real estate…Nothing stuck. I felt like a failure because I didn’t stick with those things. But, when I started acting, it became my whole life. It was easy to stick with it because I love it.” >>SELF-DEVELOPMENT & CHANGE: “I think when you’re young, you go through phases. The problem is when the phase lasts too long. I’m happy with the experiences I had when I was younger because they made me who I am today – even the mistakes. Because of everything that happened, I feel more like myself now.”

HAMPTON NUMEROLOGY East Hampton
Besides offering fun in the sun, art openings and an ongoing parade of celebrities, each of the Hamptons has hidden numerological meanings.
I
n East Hampton, you can expect a very creative experience physically, intellectually and artistically.
Names that add up to 9, or have many I’s or R’s in them, are usually generous, helpful and often in the spotlight or famous.
A location that starts with a vowel, like East Hampton, is right out there, wanting to be seen and heard.
So when a name is void of both of these numbers, as in East Hampton, the person or place must make up the karmic numbers by learning to incorporate these traits in its personality. East Hampton is a perfect example of a community working to
The fact that it begins with an “E”, which is the 5th letter of our alphabet, means that you
can count on an abundance of sex, physical activity and art to be prominent aspects in the East Hampton lifestyle.
In “East Hampton,” the vowels add up to 4, which is known as the motivation number. A 4 motivation number means dependability, community service, discipline and helping others.
The impression number, which is the sum of the consonants, is an 11, which happens to be the master “Creative” number in numerology and represents the way the outside world views a place or person. As we know, East Hampton is a town that is known for its artists, writers, actors and an assortment of creative people. Finally, let’s take the motivation number (4) and add the impression number (11). 4+1+1 equates to 6. We end up with a 6, which is the expression number.
A 6 expression number indicates that the town is filled with artists, healers, wonderful cooks and perfectionists who value their homes and also love to entertain. The karmic numbers or missing numbers in the name East Hampton are 3 and 9.
This means there is no C, L or U (the threes in the alphabet; C, the third letter, L the 12th and U, the 21st). Number 3 represents creativity, communication, being a little childish and just letting go of your inhibitions. The other karmic or missing number 9, I and R (I is the ninth letter and R the eighteenth in the alphabet), expresses generosity and fame.
make up its karmic numbers. The
people who gravitate to the area, either full or part-time are usually communicative, creative and very often wellknown or famous for what whey do.
Famous people usually have to give more than they get. Even if they end up well in the financial department, they work very hard to achieve their goals and it’s not always easy living in the spotlight. Even the zip code for East Hampton is 1+1+9+3+7= 21= 2+1=3 is a 3, which is that creative, communicating optimistic missing number in East Hampton.
For all East Hamptonites, this is a cosmic message that says
“come alive, be creative, have fun and perfect your work.” Stay tuned for more Hampton Numerology in the next issue of New York Smash!

Magnificent beaches, fresh food and a gorgeous crowd all make the Hamptons a perfect place to spend the summer. These traits also set the stage for a bit of love and romance!
Introducing the New York Smash guide to Hamptons dating. Based on real experience, this list shares our favorite restaurants for the ultimate dream date.
FOR: CASUAL NOSHING • YOUNG & HIP • DRINK DEALS GO TO •
Margarita Grille 83 Main Street Westhampton Beach (631) 288-5252
Margarita Grille hosts the cool scene in the center of town in Westhampton Beach. The large outdoor seating space is accessible from the sidewalk, so it’s the go-to restaurant if you’re checking out the shops in town and need a satisfying bite to eat. It has a casual, fresh vibe and delicious Mexican food with all the works – chips, salsa, guacamole, burritos. Also, you might like to know that they have great deals on drinks at most times in the day. This place feels young and hip. A couple of delicious margaritas will chill you out at a fair price.

FOR: BREATHTAKING OCEAN VIEWS • STEPS FROM THE BEACH • GREAT VALUE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE GO TO •
FOR: TRENDY • FINE DINING • IMPRESSIVE DÉCOR GO TO •
Beach House 103 Montauk Hwy East Hampton (631) 324-1663
If you want to go out to one of the most luxuriously trendy places just outside of town, try the finely designed Beach House. While the crowd is suitable for most groups, Beach House can definitely set the mood for a date as well. Located on 27, the warmly lit modern beach house is hard to miss, with its beautiful airy glass and stone construction. This is a very classy place. The décor is top-notch and the food comes in satisfying portions. Don’t let the name fool you; the Beach House reminds us of a beach luxury modern mansion. Food’s great, staff is professional and the ambiance makes the place very impressive for any date.
FOR: CLASSY • PEOPLE-WATCHING • DELICIOUS FRENCH FOOD • THE HAMPTONS SCENE GO TO •
Pierre’s
2468 Main Street Bridgehampton (631) 537-5110 I’d recommend all three meals of the day at the trendiest French restaurant in Bridgehampton. A breakfast, lunch or dinner date is always going to be a good time if it’s at Pierre’s. It’s a very popular place that seems to be getting even more buzz than usual this summer. If you want to soak up “The Hamptons Scene” with your date, go here. You will enjoy delicious French food and beautiful people. There is great outdoor seating where you’ll sit among a Hamptons crowd. During the day, you can grab some coffee and a smoothie for breakfast or brunch with your date at Pierre’s Gourmet Market (just next door to the restaurant) which serves up a variety of fresh French pastries and healthy goodies to go.
The Sloppy Tuna 148 S Emerson Ave. Montauk (631) 647-8000
If you already love the name, try the place… You’ll love it even more. This Montauk gem has gorgeous ocean and beach views both outside and in. Take the scenic drive to Montauk and make a stop at The Sloppy Tuna if you’re looking for a break from the pretentious Hamptons scene. It’s right off of 27 and is one of the first restaurants when you get into Montauk. At The Sloppy Tuna, you can truly relax and enjoy some of the most breathtaking ocean views on the East Coast. You really get your money’s worth here. The food is great. The staff is friendly and professional. You have to try their delicious specials because those change regularly and are always tasty. The specials are gourmet, with top of the line fish and meats, mouthwatering pairings and fresh summer greens. My “date” and I had two specials (a tuna and a scallop dish) and they were some of the best dishes we tried in weeks. This place is a must for a memorable, romantic date on the beach. Also, there is a large outdoor/indoor bar downstairs, (set apart from the beautiful dining area) with a 20-to-30something crowd, that gets very busy on weekends. This is a hotspot that will make you feel young and carefree – as if you’re on vacation!
FOR: NEARBY YACHTS • GLAMOROUS VIBE • EUROPEAN VILLA IN TOWN GO TO •
Pomme Café 6 Main Street Sag Harbor (631) 899-4609
Pomme Café will make you and your date feel as if you are fine dining in a European villa. With Sag Harbor’s windmill and mega-yachts in the near distance, the surrounding atmosphere is romantic. For warm summer nights, there are two separate patio areas. Walk down a garden pathway, and discover a hidden outdoor seating area in Pomme’s secret garden. The wait staff is polite and enthusiastic to serve you. Pomme is ideal for couples of all ages. The spacious bar is also great for drinks and conversation. And to solve the problem of sparse parking options in bustling Sag Harbor, Pomme Café offers a rarity: its very own parking lot.

18-year-old actor Danny Flaherty just starred in one of the most attention-grabbing shows of the year, graduated high school and will play opposite Meryl Streep in 2012. Danny Flaherty had a big year, and that’s quite an understatement.
First, Flaherty, 18, completed a major life stage in June: graduating high school. Second, he starred in the notoriously risqué MTV teen drama, Skins. And we should mention that those two events did not happen in that order. When he scored the role of Stanley on Skins, Flaherty rose instantly to teen stardom. As the show aired on MTV and began making headlines throughout this year and last, Flaherty chose to preserve a normal high school lifestyle (he still jams with childhood friends in their band, MF Killer Starfish) in his New Jersey hometown. He stayed in school and graduated three months after the season finale. It was just around that time when MTV announced that Skins was cancelled. Flaherty told us that he developed close bonds with his cast mates, calling some of them his best friends. So, it wasn’t easy to say goodbye. The Skins chapter has closed, but a new chapter is just beginning for Flaherty, as the extremely ambitious and sophisticated actor (his number one role model is Stanley Kubrick) has already lined up two films, expected to release in 2012: an indie entitled, Anatomy of a Tide, and another film called Great Hope Springs, where he will play opposite Meryl Streep. In a spontaneous phone interview, Flaherty gave us a peek inside the mind of today’s ambitious eighteen-year-old, and divulged a few of his secrets to success.
New York Smash: What’s it like to be famous at 18-years-old? Danny Flaherty: It’s a very surreal feeling. It’s also very exciting to only be eighteen-years-old and to have accomplished a
small amount of fame already. I’m super thankful for the opportunity I was given to perform the role of Stanley.
NYS: How do the lives of teenagers portrayed on Skins compare to reality? DF: Skins showed the closeness of friendships, which is real. In real life, we rely on friends. You don’t go to your parents all the time,
you go to your friends. That’s why you can relate to the show. When you’re watching it, you’re like, ‘Hey, I was in that situation.’ They showed a real aspect on Skins that they don’t show on other shows.
NYS: You chose to stay in school throughout Skins. You have aspirations to be a director. That’s incredibly impressive! How do you stay motivated and maintain peace of mind?
DF: Skateboarding is a huge part of my life. I guess I would say it’s my anti-drug. Also, I think my love for acting helps keep me responsible and on top of my game.
NYS: Based on your own experience, what are some things that teens should be focused on if they want to be successful? What were your priorities before you landed your role in Skins? DF: Before I achieved the role of Stanley (on Skins,) I was auditioning constantly all over the city for three years. I think teenagers should really focus on their hearts and what they really feel they want in life. Once they figure that out, they should go for it and work hard to achieve their goals.
