IMPACT REPORT 2021

GENERATE NZ

More recreation go-getters thriving for generations to come.

TĒNĀ KOUTOU KATOA Another challenging year with the effects of the global pandemic, it has definitely had an impact on our sector as a whole and on us here at the Generate Network (Generate NZ). With collaboration, adaptation from 2020 learnings and resilience, Generate NZ is grateful for and excited about what we have achieved this year and what is to come in 2022! Firstly, we must acknowledge our previous Chair of three years, Hannah Chapman-Carr. Hannah's leadership has been pivotal in Generate NZ's current standing, in particular, with our strong relationship alongside Recreation Aotearoa. We will miss Hannah as a colleague and friend, but know we will see her throughout the sector. As new Co-Chairs, we are excited by the opportunity to continue the kaupapa of Generate NZ. Having both been involved in the Generate NZ steering committee for several years we have a strong understanding of where we are at, where we are headed and are fully behind the kaupapa – "creating a launch pad for up and coming recreation professionals". The mahi generated this year through Generate NZ could not happen without the support of our steering committee - Ngā mihi nui kia koutou! We really appreciate your enthusiasm, reliability, innovation and drive to give back and make a difference to the emerging leaders in our sector. The committee has a great culture and we are grateful to be working alongside an awesome group of people. Thanks must also go to the team at Recreation Aotearoa, you’re always right behind the Generate kaupapa, and we appreciate your on-going support. Kei runga koutou! As we head into 2022 we hope to be able to connect with you all. Keep an eye out for further opportunities to connect, learn and grow. Ngā Manaakitanga,

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GENERATE In 2011 Generate was established by a group of recreation gogetters, driven by the aspiration for young professionals in the sector to have a voice and the opportunity to participate in things that helped not only drive them but also the sector. This year we celebrate 10 years, and look back on what has been achieved over the past decade.

KORERO WITH ANDREW LESLIE "Well done Generate, 10 years, it's amazing ... what an amazing effort and I just want to say a huge kudos to all those people that have been involved with Generate in the last 10 years."

Watene sat down with Recreation Aotearoa Chief Executive Andrew Leslie to talk about Generate NZ, in a year which also happens to be Andrew's 10-year anniversary as CE. The pair discussed the key aspirations of those who established Generate NZ in 2011, which have led to how the network is operating today. Across the recreation sector Generate NZ continues to positively impact the visibility of young professionals, enhance intergenerational conversations, and ensure young professionals have a voice at the strategic level.

"Generate provided a platform for interaction and discussion initially between young RA (then NZRA) members at conferences or local events which only grew in numbers, momentum and support. For me, the connections I made through this rōpū have endured and in my opinion have strengthened the base of sector support across New Zealand." Andrew Corkill Sport New Zealand

Christchurch, 2017 "Generate was really at the very beginning when I got involved, it was a great concept that a lot of people/organisations believed in and wanted to make happen. We held a series of hui and they were great for learning more about leadership, establishing contacts, and meeting long term friends and colleagues." Michele Frey Gisborne District Council

FROM THE ARCHIVES 2011 In 2011, a group of recreation go-getters brought the concept of Generate Network to life. Initially in partnership with those from Australia and supported by both New Zealand Recreation Association (now Recreation Aotearoa) and Urban Parks (now Parks & Leisure Australia).

We held numerous member events including a breakfast in Auckland with renowned guest speaker Jayne Miller, World Urban Parks Chair.

An aspiring director role was established to sit on the Recreation Aotearoa Board. The role ensures young professionals voices are heard and can influence decisions at a strategic level. The position is held by the Generate NZ Steering Committee Chair.

WE FAREWELLED HANNAH & HAYLEY AND ADOPTED A CO-CHAIR LED COMMITTEE STRUCTURE After driving and growing Generate NZ's presence and kaupapa in the recreation industry since 2017, our Chair, Hannah Chapman-Carr stepped down from the Steering Committee in September 2021. During her time as Chair, Hannah led and supported a number of pieces of work including, strengthening Generate NZ’s relationship with Recreation Aotearoa, overseeing three national conferences and many seminars, workshops and webinars, developing a strong relationship with Generate Australia and strengthening the Generate NZ Steering Committee's governance capability. 2021 also saw us farewell Hayley Lee, who had been on the Steering Committee for two years contributing immense amounts of the enthusiasm and passion towards the sector. Hayley flew the Generate NZ flag at every opportunity she had, developing a number of key stakeholder relationships and hosting multiple networking events in Christchurch. Thank you Hannah and Hayley for your support and mahi over the past few years. We wish you all the best for your next adventures and look forward to staying connected. WE LED A SPEED-MEET AT THE LINCOLN UNIVERSITY SPORT AND RECREATION FORUM Lincoln University held their 10th annual Sport and Recreation Forum in October this year. We are fortunate to have a strong relationship with the University, enabling the opportunity to host a Speed Meet at the beginning of their forum. This was an opportunity for current students to connect with a variety of sector professionals who shared their experiences, gave advice and answered questions. A great opportunity to meet new people and network face-to-face in what has been another very online year!

WE PROVIDED SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES TO OUR MEMBERS Generate NZ has been working closely with the Recreation Aotearoa Regional Committees to provide additional opportunities for our members. This year the Midlands and Southland Region's both provided scholarship opportunities to financially support three local gogetters to attend the annual Generate NZ conference.

WE HOSTED OUR ANNUAL CONFERENCE On 28th and 29th of October, Generate NZ held our annual conference at Ngā Puna Wai in Ōtautahi Christchurch. After being unable to deliver a conference in 2020 due to COVID-19 disruptions, we were almost tripped up again for a second year but managed to find a window in the calendar where we could come together to connect, learn, share and celebrate. 24 delegates from around the motu came together to hear from inspirational speakers, learn tools to enhance their personal development and networked with likeminded industry professionals. With a theme of 'Building the Puzzle', topics covered across the two days drew upon current movements we are seeing within the wider recreation sector. Learning examples include: Ways in which we can provide more inclusive practices and offerings to our impaired communities through our commitment to Article 31 - The child's right to play. How Te Ao Māori can be incorporated in story telling and to know our values and dream big. The annual conference is delivered to support Generate NZ's kaupapa 'to provide a launch pad for up & coming recreation professionals' and 'sustain the industry for generations to come'.
