r o t s a P r u A Note from O o GOD be the glory for all that He has done, for bringing us through the good times and the bad. For 55 years He has kept us. Sometimes we had to cry, but sometimes we could rejoice. Through it all we grew stronger in our devotion to GOD and our personal commitment. There were just twenty-five (25) weary warriors that started this journey fifty-five years ago, and there are only two of them left here now to see where the Lord has brought us. He has brought us from a mighty long way. When we listen to the words of the hymns and the Watts 100’s that are all but extinct in our churches today, we can feel the pain and suffering that they went through. We can feel their emotion; when they sing “You Don’t Know What The Lord Has Done For Me.” You don’t know because you weren’t there. You don’t know when and you don’t know where. You don’t know what the Lord ha done for me. I wasn’t there, but I thank GOD that I got to know many of them before they went home to be with the Lord. As we celebrate this 55th year of service for the Lord, let us remember that we are not here because of what we have done. Let us remember the we are building on the work, the foundation that others have laid. One planted, one watered, but GOD gives the increase. It takes all of us working together to see the fulfillment of GOD’s holy plan. So let us work while it is day because night cometh when no man can work. Do not worry about who did what and who got the credit, because GOD is going to reward everyone of us according to our works. May the work I’ve done speak for me. When I stand before my GOD I now the He will say well done my good and faithful servant because the work I’ve done will speak for me.

NEW ZION CHURCH HISTORY 1955-2010 “…Upon This Rock, I Will Build My Church...”
In September of 1955, twenty-five Christians had a calling on their lives and felt the need to have another place of worship. At that time, there was only one Black Baptist Church in the city of Alamogordo. So, they began to meet at the Prince Hall Lodge #11 located at 310 Delaware Avenue for Prayer Service. While it is good to pray, we all need to hear the words of the Lord. “And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?” So a few weeks later, they chose the Carpenter’s Union Hall, located on Pennsylvania Avenue for their church services. Then they asked Reverend Frank Pinkney, a Methodist Minister to preach for them. In October of 1955, an invitation was extended to local and district churches to participate in the formal organization of the church. Reverend H. B. Johnson of Fabens, Texas, served as Moderator of the meeting. A name was chosen, and “New Zion Baptist Church,” was accepted as the name for the church. The following officers were elected to serve as Deacons: Tyler Traylor, Elijah Johnson, Jr., A. V. Richards, Will Givens, Ebenezer Taylor, James Patterson, A. D. Burton,
10
and Charlie Blake. In the same meeting, Sister Eliza Stewart was elected as the Church Clerk and Reverend I. Samuel Swisher of Las Cruces, NM was chosen as pastor of the congregation. A few months later, property was purchased at 308 Maryland Avenue for the construction of the church. Mrs. Alice Swisher was very instrumental in assisting the church to obtain property. A Grounds Breaking Day was held on April 7, 1957, while the church edifice was started later in June 1957. A house was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wagoner and moved to the back of the property, to be used for church services while the church was being constructed.
To pay for the land and the building of the church, the members sold dinner, cakes and pies. Everyone helped. Those that could cook, cooked. While those that could not, delivered the dinners. Word spread quickly throughout the city about the dinners that were being sold. Soon people were stopping by to pick up dinners or place orders for dinners to be delivered. On those days when they had no customers, the member purchased the meals
themselves. They also donated money as well as cinder block to help build this church. The members knew that, “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it. So, they trusted God to guide them and to bless their endeavors. The Lord gave them the desires of their hearts and the congregation entered the new edifice on December 1, 1957 for

Stone Laying Service. Reverend Frank Jones of First Presbyterian Church in Las Cruces, NM brought the message and Reverend Jack DeVore of First Baptist Church in Las Cruces, NM, gave the Charge to the church. Reverend J. H. Horton of Artesia, NM, served as the Master of Ceremony. By that time, the Church had approximately 175 members.
Rosa L. Lee and Sister Carnell Taylor still working here at New Zion in His vineyard. We thank God for our founding brothers and sisters. They started this work and it is up to us to keep on winning souls to Christ. We all have a job to do. We are no longer selling dinners, cake and pies, but we should be getting others sold on Christ.
Let us continue to work for the Lord that He might be glorified, so There have been five ministers that have that men shall see our good works pastored at New Zion: and ask, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Reverend I. Samuel Swisher, 1955-1964 Reverend A. T. McCargo, 1964-1972 Reverend Wilson Holly, 1972-1976 Reverend James A. Hopkins, 1976-1988 Reverend Willard L. Avery, 1988-Present Today, we reap the benefits of those twentyfive founding members. Many are gone home now, but four are still with us. They are Sister Carnell Taylor and Sister Rosa L. Lee. The Lord has blessed us to have Sister

LIVING VISIONARIES
How We Made It Over 18
Sister Carnell Taylor & Sister Rosa L. Lee: Profiles of a Charter Member
he vision has come, the destination has been set and now the legacy lives on. “I’m going to work until the day is done” captures the essence of two illustrious pioneers of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Carnell Taylor and Rosa L. Lee are women with a life of history and legacy, which will live on to other generations. Sister Lee’s father, James W. Patterson, and Sister Taylor’s father, Ebenezer Taylor, both received work from the Alamogordo Sawmill. Their families moved from Louisiana and settled in the beautiful desserts of New Mexico as result of their father’s newly acquired employment. Sister Rosa L. Lee was with New Zion before there was a church by this name. When sitting with Sister Lee and asking her to recall moments from times past, she recalls meeting at the Prince Hall Grand Lodge located on Delaware Avenue, which is still in its present location today. Even though she recalls a small discrepancy in the church’s organization date, Sister Lee remembers being with child, Sister
Margaret Avery her third child, while the church was in the process of organization. By the middle of 1957, the property and groundbreaking ceremony for New Zion had commenced. Many events have happened at New Zion, but one of the most memorable event for Sister Lee was the “Burning of the Mortgage.” This marked a time where all the hard-work and countless praying finally led New Zion’s members to their blessings. Sister Lee was also blessed with the memorable event of her daughters, Deborah Lee Ludd and

Margaret Lee Avery’s, wedding held at New Zion. To get a true knowledge of a charter member, one must know their favorite aspect in service. “Father I Stretch My Hand To Thee, No Other Help I Know” is her favorite long meter hymn. Being a faithful member of New Zion has allowed Sister Lee to serve as Senior Choir President, Training Union Director, Benevolent Secretary, Assistant Youth Director, Senior Choir Treasurer Mission Treasurer and on the Program and Kitchen Committee. One thing she remembers that is not present today is the “Amen” corner that use to be located on both sides of the church in the sanctuary. Sister Carnell Taylor first came to Alamogordo to live with her family and to start school. The school she attended was located where Corinth Baptist Church currently resides. Sister Taylor’s father is also a part of the twenty-five charter members. Sister Taylor remembers how small Alamogordo use to be at that time compared to what is present today. Sister Taylor’s recollection of her mother and other women of New Zion was selling dinners to raise money for the church encompasses many of her memories from that time. Not only did her mother and father put in a lot of time and energy at New Zion, but she and her husband, Leman Taylor Sr., donated the “First 100 cinder blocks” to the church’s building effort. One memorable event that she could recall was the church’s organization. As a faithful, dedicated member to New Zion, Sister Taylor has held the positions of Mission Secretary, Choir Secretary, Mission Treasurer and a member of the Kitchen Committee. Since music is an integral part in the worship experience, Sister Taylor’s favorite hymn is “Amazing Grace.”

Superintendent Cleo Bell lder Cleo Bell was born and received his formal education in Jena, Louisiana. He later attended one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the Hampton Institute in Hampton, VA which is now Hampton University. He was married for 32 years to the late Carrie Jackson-Bell and the union was blessed with nine children. He spent 21 years in the Army and received a Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal–1st Oak Leaf Cluster, and a Good Conduct Medal to name a few. God called Elder Bell into the ministry and filled him with the Holy Ghost in October 1967. He was ordained as an Elder in 1968 and became the Pastor of St. John Church of God in Christ (COGIC) on June 21 of that same year. As Elder Bell grew in his ministry, he was appointed the Superintendent of the Southern District in 1972. He also became a member of the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society from 1977-1980. He then retired from the Army and Air Force Exchange Service at White Sands Missile Range after 25 years of service. Now that he had some free time, he was able to accept the appointment to the State Executive Committee of New Mexico for the COGIC. He serves as the Chairman of the Ordination Committee, Special Assistant to the Jurisdictional Bishop, and Budget Chairman. Under his leadership, a new church edifice was constructed in 1995 and the church’s name was changed to Greater St.
Gold
John. The Lord then increased his flock and he also became the Pastor of the Power House COGIC in Deming, NM. Elder Bell with the guidance of the Lord was able to start the first Award Ceremony for faithful workers of the church in May 1995. Having found favor with the Lord, he was able to hold the church’s first Vacation Bible School during 13-15 June of that year. Elder Bell is tireless when it comes to the Lord’s business. In June 2004, he was appointed Superintendent of the Pentecostal District and became the Pastor of Immanuel COGIC in Roswell, NM. He acknowledges that God is all, and believes in the direction of the Holy Ghost. He stresses the importance of Mission Outreach, Youth involvement, Christian Education and Training. He strives to plant positive attitudes toward church development and growth in men, women and children. He continues to enhance church membership by encouraging and strengthening members through the teaching of the gospel.
