ALL ABOUT

CLOCKS Dear NeXtime friends, We proudly present our new NeXtime magazine! It is our 2014 catalogue designed in a new magazine style where we share our love for clocks, tell you about our unique clock designs and the ideas behind some of the designs. With the new look of our catalogue, styled as a magazine we indicate a new beginning. A new beginning where the word crisis looses its power and people find new and creative ways to run their business and to promote their products. The world we’re trading in, is changing and the ‘the mouse click’ increasingly shapes the way we do business. A challenging trading environment where consumers look online first before they make a purchase in store and buy more and more products online; makes for interesting times for NeXtime. We recognize there are many opportunities, both in the stores as online and we therefore created a toolbox with many features to support our customers with their marketing and selling of our clocks. New distributors joined the NeXtime family last year and we are now represented in more countries and more shops than ever before! Thanks to the partnership with our distributors and your continuoussupport makes NeXtime what it is today. This year we hope to extend our presence in more countries around the world, provide more and better support to you, our retail partner and help us share our love for clocks.

See you NeXtime! Alain Frie

In just a few steps you will be able to enjoy extra digital content on any of your digital devices (IOS, Android, phone or tablet): videos of clocks. Just look for the Aurasma logo to unlock a hidden world of virtual content. Once subscribed you will be able to recognize all the images and display the videos. The Testpage and within one year she was the largest one-clock customer.

Alain and Ilse came to Copenhagen and help set up a special NeXtime booth in the accessory section. The NeXtime collection was well received by the Danish customers and the press just loved NeXtime. The name, Alpe d’Huzes, is a combination of the Dutch word for “six” and the name of the Alpe d’Huez mountain. The aim of the cycling event is to raise money for research into cancer. Alpe d’HuZes adheres to a strict no-overhead policy: the event runs on volunteers and all costs are borne by the participants themselves. In other words, each euro donated will be one euro donated to the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) / Alpe d’HuZes fund. The mission of Alpe d’HuZes is to facilitate and inspire people to lead Happy and Healthy lives in Harmony with cancer. Its vision is to become the Dutch organisation that makes a real difference in and for the life of the cancer patient.

Dutch celebrity Edwin Evers, who is a radio DJ, got involved in the auction of the Alpe d’Huzes fund raising and wanted to give something special. Edwin Evers is a NeXtime fan and in particular he loves the Vinyl Tap design. What would you expect from a radio DJ, right? So for the auction a Vinyl Tap from NeXtime personalized with his signature fitted the bill perfectly.

BIRTH OF A CLOCK We’re proud that this NeXtime magazine is packed with great clock designs that all combine aesthetic creative appeal with simple time-telling. Unique and seamlessly blending form and function that makes NeXtime clocks so desirable. While technology has provided us new materials and methods of production, the concept remains the same; thoughtfully designed clocks that brighten up a room and create what we like to call: “Happy Walls”, proving every time that a NeXtime clock is so much more than just a time-telling device. The road to a successful NeXtime clock design starts with an idea, a concept from our own design team or an outside designer. The designers continuously balance creative, conceptual, freeform thinking with the practical, industrial constraints of actually getting something made, which requires knowledge of production processes, materials and technology. All our designers therefore closely collaborate with our people in Product Development &

Production to bring their concept for a clock design come alive. Can you imagine the incredible amount of time spend to go over the design details, selecting the possible materials and production options as well as the countless samples that are made, all to ensure that we are protecting the original design intent through production. After all these efforts are complete, which usually takes up months and some times more than a year, we then decide what we will present for next year’s collection to our distributors. The global trends they bring in, and the views we exchange with our distributors is important in the final selection process of our new collection of exciting clock designs. This catalogue shows our unique signature designs and great new clock designs of 2014. The road from inspiration into an idea and finally a NeXtime design not always comes easy, granted, but we think it is well worth it as we believe that every clock design in this catalogue is our special way to say “We Love Clocks.”

INTERVIEW Creating clocks is something Alain Frie was born with. As a kid he helped after school at the assembly line or packing the clocks. 25 years later he came into the business and changed his fathers company to modern clock producer. What role did clocks play in your life growing up? What was your relationship like with the clock and time in general? “My parents set up the company over 40 years ago, just before I was born, so I was raised amongst clocks. Initially, they made the first clocks at home and later when my father constructed the factory building it was an ideal place to play and to help during the school holidays. We usually visited suppliers in Germany in the Black Forest before going on holidays, where I would sit at the table listening to conversation on how to make and create clocks. So clocks are something I have known my whole life. Clocks and time are two things that are of course related but clocks are much more than just timekeepers. Clocks are things we buy as decoration in our home and give an image of who you are and what you want to be. I think the functionality in combination with design and technique is

Little Alain discovering the company

something, which will be an inspiration to me for the rest of my live.” Was it always your plan, or your family’s plan, for you to take over your father’s clock business? How did you go about changing the direction and style of your father’s clock business into your own? “No it was not always my intention, I originally trained as a chef. I like the good things in life, so cooking is something I now do as a hobby. After my studies in the hotel business and working in this field for a few years I was still drawn to the clock business. At that time the company was already international. As a young man I wanted to travel the world and the family business gave the opportunity to do this. When I came into the business in the early nineties the whole clock business was going through a period of transition. In the past, the later part of the clocks or the clock parts were produced in Germany in the Black Forest. These were mostly traditional clocks, which were mainly mechanical clocks for classic interiors. These clocks were sold through clock specialists and jewelry stores around the world. At the end of the 80’s and beginning of 90’s, the production was starting to be based on quartz movements, which lowered the clock prices. Also, it meant the clocks were no longer a product which needed a specialist to sell it. The more competitive pricing and greater flexibility of the quartz movement gave the opportunity to work on new designs and different channels to sell the products. From this moment on design became the driving force in the clock business. Going to more

INTERVIEW modern design also gave to the opportunity to sell the clocks in gift, design and furniture stores. This is where the majority of the clocks are now being sold. NeXtime moved with the market and started to work with many designers and is now the leading brand in design clocks.” Did you initially have a vision of the kind of products you wanted to design, create, market and sell? Where did this vision come from? What were your influences and inspirations? “As I was born into the clock business, designing and creating new clocks is something I have done all my life. However it is always a challenge to come up with new concepts, which are innovative and are still commercial, easy to read and good timekeepers. I am always following the latest trends in furniture design, colours and materials. These trends together with my experience in clock business and the inspiration that I get in the factories brings me enough inspiration to create a new collection of 30 to 40 new models every year.” Is it restricting or inspiring to constantly be working with making a traditional and functional object (the clock,) modern, new, and interesting? “I don’t know how or why but every year there are new ideas and it is an amazing experience what you can do with clocks. Of course there are also many young designers, who help me to create the NeXtime collection. “ What was the inspiration behind your ‘’Dropped’’ wall clock design? How important are materials to your design concept? (For example, in the ‘’Dropped’’ clock, the partially clear glass that shows wall colour.) “For me, being a man with a production background, materials are the driving force behind my designs. Glass is a beautiful material with a good weight. The sparkle, transparency, mirror numbers and the weight give the clock the quality look-and-feel it needs. The Dropped Numbers is one of my first designs. It is something, which started as a joke but is now one of our bestselling clocks.” What is usually the key moment for you during the process of designing a clock, from the first sketch to the end product being manufactured? At which point do you feel most confident about its success? “Every facet is of the process is important. Every year we create about 250 sketches and drawings for new clock concepts. The sketch has to draw my attention. Then it is important to find the right source who is interested in making the samples and is willing to put their time and resources in making a good sample. The sample has to be selected by my sales team and the buyers, and then it has to be produced, packed etc. If one of these facets in the process is not good the product will not be a success. So after this whole process is finished I can say whether it will be success. Producing a hit item is

It is an amazing experience what you can do with clocks.

like a winning lottery ticket there are so many things that can go wrong. However when the product is good and selling well in the stores it a satisfaction for me and the whole team who helped to create the product.” Does being surrounded by other clock designers spark your own ideas? Are your designs inspired by theirs or does your influence come from elsewhere? “Most ideas are inspired by me or the input from the market. However being 100% original is almost impossible, one always gets inspirations from visiting all the tradeshows and meeting designers around the world. However, NeXtime prides it self on creating a 100% original design collection which shows products which are designed and produced exclusively for NeXtime.” Is it challenging to play the role of both business owner and clock designer? Which do you identify more with? And is it difficult to judge the marketability of you own designs after creating them? “It is always hard to run a business and to be creative on the same time; wearing two hats. It is simply a case of changing your hat and to empty your mind and work on one thing at a time. The hard thing is that for designing ideas you have to fly and the flying is not something that comes to you when you want. Every design is like a child so you nurture it until it is ready to fly out and you are never 100% sure whether it is going to succeed or not.” Where do you see the future of your designs going? What can we anticipate from you? “I hope to become more creative in other fields in the future however for now you can mainly expect clocks, clocks, clocks and more beautiful clocks.”

NEXTIME EVENT 2013 During the last autumn show of the ‘Maison et Objet’ in Paris, NeXtime distributors came from all corners of the world to be part in the selection process of the new collection of 2014. Prototypes were discussed and views were exchanged, discussed from every possible angle and in the end we were very happy with the new collection for 2014. There were many compliments to our design team who managed to come up with some strong designs that potentially could become NeXtime’s next top model. And was it then only work and no play? Of course not! Not at a NeXtime

event! We served our special ‘Time Bomb’ cocktail which was almost as popular as the small bites that were especially designed for NeXtime. Soon the music was turned up a couple of notches and by the time we closed the door, the sun was almost up. After all the positive feedback we received and the overall vibe from our event in Paris and from all the Autumn shows, we’re convinced that 2014 will be a strong year for our distributors and all our customers around the world who love our clock designs and share the same love for clocks.

RED

Red colour meanings and associations Red has more personal associations than any other colour and is also the most emotionally intense colour there is. Red is very vibrant and powerful and is ideal for making dramatic statements. Red is a very vital and active colour and is most associated with passion, desire and strength. Colour psychology One of the main effects the colour red creates, is the stimulation of the appetite and conversation. People eat and talk more in the presense of red colours. Therefore, the use of the colour red is sometimes suggested for the dining room. Red can be seen as a stressful colour, because it has been shown to increase heart rate and blood pressure. Therefore, the colour should be us used with caution. But when thoughtfully used, wether on a wall or in a handful of accessories, it can make a room come alive. Red accents in a room can make people feel active, passionate and energetic. Interior design with red colours encourages to spend more energy and forces people to take action. Therefore, using red colours in the bedroom is not suggested, since the bedroom should be a place to relax and rest. Red colours in the bedroom does make you get up easier, but falling a sleep could be a problem. Different kinds of red Different patterns and shades of red can work together. Also, combined with other colours, red offers even more versatility. An earthly red used with wood tones can warm a room. Red with soft gray and touches of magengta can make a room feel cozy, feminine and soft. Depending on the texture, deep reds may absorb light while brighter reds allow light to bounce off walls. Red with a touch of brown or purple will feel warmer than pure red with hints of pink. Orange-tinged reds will make you feel energized, while purple-red shades can make a space feel more intimate and quiet. Conclusion You can hang a red NeXtime clock without any danger in the living room, to spice up the room. Combine it with other colours to get the wanted effect.

QUALITY CONTROL The quality of our products is one of the most important issues when developing and manufacturing our clocks. To maintain our high quality and to make sure all the people who will buy a NeXtime clock will have the ultimate NeXtime experience, we are checking all our goods before they are shipped out. This is done by our Quality Department, existing of Eric and Tom. Checking the goods does not only happen after the production is finished, but it already starts with the first sample. While the designers focus on the design, the colours and the total look and feel of the item, our quality department is already checking if the factory did a good job. They are checking things like the construction, the printing quality, the assembling and many more. Before we decide to take the item into the collection, the quality department wants to see a perfect s ample from the factory that matches our high standards. Only when this sample is 100% correct, we can embrace a new clock in our collection. When we develop the clock, we also develop the packaging. It is very important the packaging is strong and protects the clock. The clock will be put in a plastic bag to prevent scratches. It also includes a manual/warranty card to explain how the clock works in 7 different languages. On the outside of the gift box you can find a small story

80 | 2014 collection

about the clock and its designer, an EAN-label and a QR-code, providing more information about clock. After this process is finished we focus on the quality of the production. The chosen sample is the standard that the production needs to meet. Everything needs to be the same as this sample and this will be checked carefully. Every shipment that is sent out from a factory is checked, based on the AQL II 2.5/4.0 standard. AQL stands for “Acceptance Quality Limit”, and is defined as the quality level that is the worst tolerable (ISO 2859 standard). We chose a high standard, with clear guidelines, so all parties involved know what they can expect and what is expected from them. According to the standard, all the things that are different from our chosen sample can be divided into three categories.

Critical - is a defect that poses a hazardous or unsafe condition to individuals using the product; will cause personal injury and / or serious damage. No tolerance is allowed, when found 1 item in this category, the total shipment is rejected. You can think of bloodstains, hair or dead animals on or with the product. Major - is a defect that substantially prevents the product from delivering its intended function(s), or obviously affects the product appearance as perceived by the consumer. There is a slight tolerance for items in this category. There are clear tables showing the number of accepted major defects, before the shipment is rejected. Things that fall under the Major defects are, wrong printing, movement not working, unacceptable colour deviation, box quality etc. Minor - is a defect that partially prevents the product from delivering its intended function(s), or a visual or cosmetic imperfection that is noticeable, but does not impact the overall appearance of the product as perceived by the consumer. The tolerance on this defect is the highest, but still it is only allowed on a small percentage of the sample size (>9%). You can think of slight scratches on the back of the item, hands not on the correct starting time, slightly unaligned label on the gift box etc. Our quality development is following this standard very carefully and makes a report of their findings after every inspection. This report shows the found deviations between the sample and the actual production batch. Eric and Tom explain this in words, in numbers and with pictures. We use this reports to sent to the factory to point out the things to focus on and we also use it internally for our review. Only after the green “Accepted” shows on the report, the goods are allowed to be shipped from the factory.

MECHANISMS Standard, sweep or pendulum Our mechanisms are of very high quality, and can be recognized by their blue colour, the NeXtime logo and the trash can symbol for WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment). We introduced the coloured mechanism some time ago , to be able to identify our mechanisms easily and to complicate the copying of our clocks. All our mechanisms are checked before they are send to the clock factory, and a random sample is checked again by our quality control department at the factory. We have three different mechanisms: standard, sweep (a.k.a. Silent) and pendulum.

Standard The standard movement makes a ‘step’ every minute. This is the normal movement. You can recognize it by the brown wheel.

Silent / Sweep

On top of this, we have a very high standard when it comes to our movement. This is one of the most important parts of a clock, so we are doing a 100% check. All movements will be checked at the factory for 100% for at least 48hours, the defected ones will be trashed right away. After all these checks our defective rate is very low. Unfortunately it sometimes happens that people receive a damaged or faulty clock. Most of the time the damages are caused by transport. When you receive a damaged clock, please let us know the item number, our invoice number, PO number (mentioned on the master carton), and quantity of defects, and send us some good pictures. This way we can investigate the problem and keep improving on the quality.

The Sweep movement, better known as Silent movement silently moves, so no more ticking. It can be recognized by the red wheel, and if the clock has a second hand, by the smoothly moving second hand. Since 2013 all our alarm clocks have a silent movement.

Pendulum We have two different pendulum mechanisms: one with one battery and one with two. Two batteries (one for the time and one for the pendulum) is used when the pendulum needs more power, so when it is heavier.

We just love clocks, and we want to make sure you get them in good shape.

(The WEEE Directive set collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical goods, with a minimum rate of 4 kilograms per head of population per annum recovered for recycling by 2009. (source: www. wikipedia.org, October 2013))

Working on the catalogue

THE MAKING OF Our catalogue is important to us. Not only is it still one of the most important tools to showcase our clock designs but also our catalogue will give interesting and fun information on us and our clock designs. Each year we put a lot of thought into the concept and the design of the catalogue. And whilst the concepts of last year’s catalogue remained the same, we made changes to the design i.e. more pictures and use of different fonts and colours etc. But for this catalogue we looked to completely change the catalogue concept and come up with a brand new design ideas; introducing the 2014 NeXtime magazine! With more background information, more interior pictures starring our

clock designs and pictures showing a clock in detail. Plus we added some fun stories about us and some of our distributors, our ‘clock loving’ team, a look behind the scenes and still a main focus on our clock designs. The new concept of this 2014 magazine didn’t come along easy, especially as we wanted to dramatically change the look and feel of the catalogue, but keep with our corporate design at the same time. The fun process of developing the new magazine concept was one of generating ideas, throwing these ideas around and just ultimately brainstorming until we came up with the magazine concept that is in front of you. The creativity didn’t stop with

This 2014 catalogue was created by all NeXtimers. We share a love for clocks and love to share our clock designs with you. the concept but it continued with the graphic design, writing of new copy, creating new illustrations and new photography. You can imagine the amount of work that we put into this catalogue. Fortunately we received a lot of help from our distributors and outside designers, who provided us with information, press clippings, photo’s etc. We are proud of our 2014 magazine. Not only does it look amazing but it is a product of distributors, designers and the NeXtime team working together; proving again that our shared love for clocks can produce beautiful results. Please enjoy our 2014 magazine.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS On our website you find movies explaining how to solve the most common issues, and how to replace a mechanism or hands.

No need for normal batteries anymore. This battery adapter can be plugged in any compatible plug and thus it will reduce the waste.

In this article we will give an awnser to some of the most Frequently Asked Questions concerning the clocks are. Why is the battery rapidly out of power? This may be down to the type of battery used. We advise alkaline batteries are used with all NeXtime products as these have a longer battery life. Never use rechargeable ones. Why are the clock hands running slower than usual? It may be due to the cap in the middle of the hands being pressed down too deeply, this can affect the way the hands run. To resolve this gently remove the cap and place it back on so it is not as tight.

Batery Adapter code: PABATAAEU 23OV / 24OV input - 1.5 output

Blister AA Batteries code: AABAT blister with 4 AA alkaline penlite batteries

How to fix the loose hands? This can occur to clocks with no glass protecting it. Be careful when dusting or unpacking to prevent this from happening. If they do become loose, remove the cap, then remove the hands carefully using your thumb and index finger. Put it back together, first the hour hand, then the minute hand making sure they are both against the plastic shaft. Place the cap back on; not too tight and re-set the time.

COPYCATS NeXtime annoyed with copies of original NeXtime designs

The Chef (2925) designed by Steve Buss was introduced in 2008 and we received a designer prize in 2009.

Never draw what you can copy is a popular saying. But it is the nightmare of every designer: to find a copy of his or her design in the stores. “We increasingly experience copies of our designs,” said Alain Frie, creative director of NeXtime. “But we refuse to accept this as normal and we will continue to challenge those companies who market copies or close look-a-likes of our clocks and support our designers. Sadly enough, legal actions in this sense have become part of our business. We will continue to be relentless in protecting our designs. Regardless who and where, and do not see it as a compliment to our designers, as one of the companies have responded when we flagged their copy of one our designs.” Alain shows some copies of original NeXtime designs. “These copies are of design that have proven successful over the years in many markets, and that is probably why companies made these copies. As you can see, the copied design is done poorly and also most of the copies are of a poor quality. NeXtime stands for a high commitment to design and craftsmanship in clocks. We encourage everyone to be original and look forward to receive fresh new designs from designers.

The testpage (8607) was designed by Frits Vink for NeXtime. We introduced the Testpage in 2006 and it’s one of our bestsellers.

HISTORY Left: The Alma Factory (now NeXtime office) under construction Right: Ton making a clock Left: Hans and Hannie Frie Right: Alma at a show Down: Spraying classic clocks A small country in Europe known for its cheese, windmills and tulips spawned many world-class painters, such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh, and has long been a fertile breeding ground for art and design. Famous design furniture like the Rietveld chair, remarkable architectural design from architect Rem Koolhaas and mind blowing fashion design from Viktor & Rolf are just a few examples of Dutch Design; made with love from designers from The Netherlands. Dutch Design can be characterized as minimalist, playful, innovative, quirky, and humorous. “Dutch design is simple and powerful” says Alain Frie, Creative Director of NeXtime, the clock design company from The Netherlands, established in 1970. Back then in 1970, Hans and Hannie Frie started the company making amazing hand-made mechanical clocks. It was the love for clocks, the level of detail and outstanding craftsmanship that soon earned this family-owned Dutch company international recognition. Now, more than four decades later, their son Alain is the driving force of the company. Alain was raised in clocks. The first production of clocks was at the family’s home and later the factory was an ideal place for him to play. But it was not only play for little Alain as

his parents also made him help in the factory during the school holidays. Today, Alain is in charge of NeXtime, a company that sells clocks in more than 50 countries around the world. But not only is he the head of NeXtime, Alain is very much the heart of NeXtime’s design centre where he shares his love for clocks and inspires designers to come up with new and innovative clock designs. Designers like Henk Stallinga, Paolo Renna, Frits Vink and others welcome the challenge to create NeXtime’s next top design. They especially enjoy the experience in this fun, clock loving environment at this company from The Netherlands called NeXtime. Every single person at NeXtime has this love for clocks. Combine this with the continuous drive and passion to bring the world great clock designs, every time. This is why NeXtime is the company that created some of the internationally most recognized and prize-awarded clock designs over the years. You can find a NeXtime clock in many homes, stores and even museums around the world: from Paris (Galeries Lafayette) to New York (MoMa), in Beijing and of course in Amsterdam; created with love for NeXtime. See you NeXtime!

Statue is a hand-made mechanical table clock. The superb artistry which typifies the French Horologists of the late 18th Century seems to have culminated in this beautiful clock. Deceptively simple, the restrained elegance serves to enhance the obvious craftsmanship inherent in such fine wheelwork with its delicate crossings and very high tooth counts. The frames, pierced out of solid brass, are gracefully faceted, polished and burnished to provide a gleaming support for the four wheel train. The Great Wheel has 288 teeth and makes only one revolution daily. This drives the centre wheel with a diameter slightly larger than the bezel, thus, when viewed from the front, framing the enamel dial. Statue is only made on special request
