Isn’t it nice to know that while so many of the things around us are subject to change, music remains essentially the same? Of course there are changing styles, evolving genres, new delivery systems. But at the end of the day, music remains music, and it is one of life’s most beguiling experiences. Where did it all start? Manipulation of the vocal cords, the tapping of a stick on a hollow log, perhaps? We’ll never know. But wherever you go in the world, music underscores life and almost always unites people. Music was a live experience for millennia before the modern world of recording and reproduction took us from wax cylinders and shellac records to the

hard drives and flash-memory devices used today. Now we can transport music wherever we wish, play it at a time to suit us, create a collection tailored to our own tastes. And right now we are at a unique point in time, with a tangible bridge between what I would call ‘static’ systems and ‘portable’ music. Many visitors and exhibitors at the Show will remember the huge demand for hi-fi in the mid-1980s, when every age group could see the appeal of having a separates system as a centrepiece of the home — admired, played and shared. But with the arrival of the internet, digitisation and downloads, a separation occurred based around mobile audio — the Walkman, then the iPod, now the smartphone. There are still many who love their two-channel audio and their surround systems in a domestic location. But many music fans now listen on the move, wanting all their music available

anywhere, at the flick of a switch. Yet how many such listeners understand how good their favourite music can really sound? That’s my point about the ‘bridge’. With the emergence of docking stations, networking devices and all manner of hi-fi with the ability to stream from these mobile devices, music can now easily be elevated to a new level for all these people. Meanwhile traditional two-channel listeners are increasingly aware that hard-drive hi-fi can carry audio beyond CD quality, while of course flick-of-a-switch access can be rather exciting for them, too! All this can only be good for the future of static systems, and perhaps even heralds a new boom in true two-channel audio. At this Show you’ll see audio and AV equipment of fantastic quality. It’s an opportunity to experience not only the sounds, but also how the new breed of hi-fi fits seamlessly into today’s lifestyles, and into a future where music will surely always matter in our lives.
