margaret durow

Meet the lady from Lake Mills, Wisconsin whose dreamlike, eerie photos kidnap our imaginations. Colour or black and white? I love both. Sometimes colour can add to a feeling in a photo, but other times it might be distracting, and the moment is better conveyed through black and white. The hardest thing to capture in a photo is… just how the light looked and felt. What do you do to get out of a rut? I have to change my state of mind, by changing the pattern I was in. Sometimes I get into a rut because I haven’t had enough alone time, so I’ll spend time by myself and get comfortably back into my head. Then if I get lonely, I’ll have some company and be inspired by getting out of my head. Taking a walk and being near a lake is always needed. What makes you shake your head in disbelief? The industrial food system. The way it treats living things as products, while filling our bodies and environment with antibiotics and toxic chemicals. What makes you smile? One fried egg, coffee, and the morning light shining through my window. Favourite websites? Websites with historical archives, like The Commons on Flickr, or the Wisconsin Historical Society. Masha Gessen, 46 Masha Gessen, pictured with her daughter, Yolka, 10, is a famous Russian political journalist. She lives with her partner and her two other children in Moscow, one of which she adopted from an orphanage in Kaliningrad in 1997 – a right that no longer exists for LGBT people. She is in the process of moving her family to the USA for fear of losing her children to the hands of the Russian State. “But who better personifies foreign or Western influence than LGBTs? So we're the first target but we're not going to be the only target. It's going to broaden out."

I’d rather they never existed. It’s an error of nature, an imperfection, a penalty, a throw-out”.

the kingdom of kenya A safari experience in Kenya is more than a day at the zoo; see the animal kingdom in its full glory. WORDS & PHOTOS ALEXANDRA LONGSTAFF

Every wild African adventure must begin somewhere and Kenya is an intriguing, culturally rich and, at times, challenging place to begin. Winding your way through Nairobi’s streets is both exhilarating and a little intimidating so it’s probably best to hop in a cab to explore when you first arrive. Walking at night is not an option: not for visitors or inhabitants. That said, the risky night-time streets of Nairobi are beautifully off set by the friendliness of the people found in the pocket bars, restaurants, in the villages, on the beaches and out in the savannah. With a cold Tusker beer in hand and some cool African riddim in your ears a bustling hub of vitality reveals itself. It is now that the heart of Africa fills your soul with its alluring beat.

MIDNIGHT ON THE AFRICAN EXPRESS When you think of Kenya, the infamous Masai Mara might pop into your head. This is where the wildebeest migrate annually and hoards of onlookers gather to be swept up in The Lion King in action. But avoid the tourist crowds; hit the back trail and head for water instead and you’ll be rewarded. For a pretty awesome experience take the overnight train from Nairobi to Mombasa. You’ll get a meal and a bunk bed and as you roll through the wilderness in the night, the lion’s roar (whether real or imaginary)
