David Griffiths

Principal of Nexus International School

It gives me great pleasure to introduce our 2018-19 Yearbook as the Principal of Nexus International School, Malaysia, in the 10th year of our unique school. I have been lucky enough to write a number of introductions as Head of Primary and even one as acting Head of Secondary whilst witnessing the growth of our school from just over 100 learners in 2008 to almost 700 today. Browsing through the first Nexus Yearbook from 2009, I came across the following sentence: “In such a short time our school community has already managed to create an atmosphere of trust, care and respect, and visitors to Nexus often comment on what happy, polite, enthusiastic and motivated learners we have.” I am immensely proud that, ten years on, the same comments are regularly heard. Our teachers and learners are well known throughout South East Asia as knowledgeable, innovative, collaborative, inclusive and respectful individuals and teams. The Nexus community has always retained that which remains unique to us, our Nexus Way. This unique set of values continues to shape and influence our community. This year our new academic leadership teams have implemented improvements in the curriculum and this has been reflected in the academic progress made by our learners. Our teachers, as ever, work tirelessly to skilfully facilitate learning in their classrooms and workspaces and you, the learners have committed your precious time in helping to enhance and develop the learning experiences available to all of us. Likewise, parent involvement in school has continued to be strong and I’d like to thank our wonderful, new PTA who are an invaluable resource, adding considerably to learning outcomes. To those leaving us, thank you for your contributions to our school. It has been wonderful to see you grow and develop over your time at Nexus and I hope that we have together provided you with the skills and competencies necessary for your future success. This year’s achievements are built upon the solid framework of the Nexus Way and, as we strive to move further forward, it is always such a pleasure to look back and celebrate our successes. Enjoy browsing through this yearbook and a special thanks to the talented group of teachers and learners who have spent months putting it together for the enjoyment of the whole Nexus community.

Term 3 in Early Years was certainly very busy. We learnt so much about the sea. The creatures that live in the sea, its dark depths and very importantly, how to take care of it. Early Years learners are being proactive and saying ‘No!’ to plastic. During Challenge Week, Early Years learners tried some new and exciting activities. They showed resilience and cooperation as they built dens together. On the trip to Mydin they showed that they could follow instructions and use their knowledge on road safety to stay safe. When they returned, they made healthy sandwiches which they ate at the Teddy Bears Picnic. An exciting day final day brought pets into the class. Now they have class pet fish to care for too!

014

TR IPS This year, Early Years have got to know their local community. During ‘The World Around Us’ topic, Early Years learners went on several walking trips around the local area of Putrajaya. The learners visited different businesses, where they purchased a drink or snack from the shop, ate delicious doughnuts and sampled Roti Canai in a restaurant. They visited the park and played ‘duck, duck, goose’ in the square. Each time the learners went out on a trip they kept the personal goal of Respect in their minds. The learners showed they were respectful by being polite to people they met and showing kindness and consideration for living things and the environment. When the police visited us a school they agreed too!

LEARNING activities

In Year 1, we had a lot of fun exploring new learning. We used our cooperation, enquiry as well as communication skills while exploring our learning through role play and real life experience activities. Some of our favourites included exploring different job roles in our A Day in The Life Entry point, explaining our 3D town to our parents during our Exit Point, conducting simple science experiments as well as being little Mathematicians, measuring our friends. We were also agriculturists and learned how to look after our plants in Term 3.

019

020

TR IPS The Year 1s tapped into their adventurous side and indulged in some amazing experiences! We became little chefs-in-the making, exploring our different senses for the topic ‘Sensation’, when we visited Young Chef’s Academy to churn out tasty little treats like pizzas and cookies. That wasn’t all, we also went on an epic journey around the ‘Nexus Village’ for our topic, ‘A Day In The Life’ to see what different types of jobs can be found in our local community.

021

CELEBRATIONS

At Nexus, we are never short of a celebration! We were very Internationally Minded when embracing different cultures in our Home and Host countries. Our all time favourite was awakening our taste buds to a variety of yummy foods. Happy Tummy = Happy Year 1s.

Year 2 have shown great rigour and resilience in all of their learning this year! Some of our highlights include: explaining about the Global Goals to our parents during our Flowers and Insects Exit Point; using Talk for Writing to bring stories to life; taking our learning outside to become pirates or Aboriginal storytellers; and finally all the cooking and baking we did in Term 3.

026

TR IPS This year we went on some epic adventures, we explored the jungle around Nexus and created our journey sticks which documented the things we discovered on our trail. We also went on several different modes of transport for our Topic From A to B (from buses, trains, planes and on foot). We also got to look at all the amazing butterflies in our topic Flowers and Insects.

027

CELEBRATIONS

There have been so many wonderful celebrations this year. In November, we got to learn all about Deepavali and we got to make Diva lamps. In December, Father Christmas came to visit us. In January, dragons came to visit and brought us luck. In June, we got to learn all about Hari Raya. Plus we got to make Baju Kurung and Baju Melayu. On top of this, we had Book Week as heroes and the World’s biggest classroom!

LEARNING activities

031

What a fantastic year of learning it has been in Year 3! We have enjoyed retelling stories with Talk 4 Writing, and got to grips with some hands-on learning in Maths. Through our IPC topics we have learned about dinosaurs, digital gaming, rainforests, being an entrepreneur, and staying healthy. We have had some successful Exit Points, including the WWF fundraiser and the Young Entrepreneurs business fair. Both of these were planned entirely by the Year 3 learners, and were great examples of real life learning.

032

TR IPS

In Term 1 we investigated dinosaurs by visiting Jurassica, where we completed a dinosaur quiz and got up close to some life-sized, moving dino models! In Term 2 it was off to FRIM to learn more about rainforest plants and animals from primary sources. Our rainforest guides showed us some of the unique wildlife that make up our Malaysian rainforests. Finally, in Term 3 we visited Super Park Malaysia as part of our sleepover activities. We got active through a range of activities such as trampolining, rock climbing and ice skating. Back at school, we had fun at our night swim with glow-sticks, before setting up our beds to spend the night in school.

033

CELEBRATIONS

As always, the year has been full of celebrations from many different cultures. These have included Merdeka, Deepavali, Christmas, Chinese New Year and Hari Raya. For each celebration, learners have come dressed in traditional clothes and we have prepared a range of songs and performances for our wonderful Curriculum Day Assemblies. One highlight was Year 3’s ‘12 Days of Nexmas’ song in the Christmas Assembly- we enjoyed combining the personal goals with a traditional Christmas tune!

LEARNING activities

037

Year 4 have had an action-packed, fun-filled year of learning, where we have greatly expanded our knowledge, skills and understanding and developed our personal goals. From learning about what learning actually looks like in our Brainwave topic; creating electrical circuits when exploring electricity in Brightsparks; taste testing chocolate recipes through the ages and developing our own brands; designing Aztec inspired clay pots; creating explosions as we learned about gases to exploring our impact upon the Earth. We have been actively in rich learning tasks in our IPC units. In Language Arts, we have expanded our vocabulary and ideas and become authors and in Maths we have become creative thinkers and problem solvers. These are just a few of the many exciting learning activities we have been engaged in this year in Year 4!

038

TR IPS Year 4’s had the privilege of taking their learning outside of the classroom. They experienced handson learning when they had the chance to bake brownies after learning all about chocolate! This required them to also be precise in measuring ingredients for baking. Besides, they had their very first residential trip away from their comfort zone - in the forest of Janda Baik. They loved the outdoors as they hiked along the river, tubed down the icy, cold water and learnt new life-skills there and were very adaptable learners! We learned a lot about being independent!

039

CELEBRATIONS

As always at Nexus, we have celebrated our diversity and the rich traditions from our many different home countries and our host country, Malaysia. From Merdeka, Christmas, Lunar New Year, Diwali, Hari Raya to Book Week to name just a few, we have had a busy year marked by many significant dates, giving us endless excuses to celebrate! We have dressed in many costumes, explored games and learned about traditions, eaten delicious local treats and presented our learning on the stage. Through doing so, we have learned how important it is to celebrate different cultures in the classroom, developing our respect for others and our international mindedness, not to mention the great fun that was had!

LEARNING activities Year 5 have completed a LOT of learning this year! No stone has been left unturned in our quest for understanding across a whole range of subjects. We have written stories in Language Arts; investigated problems in Maths; created beautiful digital art masterpieces in the style of Dadaism; discovered the history of Kuala Lumpur; created maps in Geography; experienced forces and learnt unbelievable facts in Science. And so, so much more! Our learning has been practical, engaging and interactive. It has been mental, physical, digital and international. We have learnt collaboratively or alone if we preferred! But the most important part of our learning is that it has been FUN!

043

A lot of our learning this year has been very hands-on! Take a look at how we baked scones. Or how we made the science-defying Ooblek for one of our IPC Entry Points. In World Cultures, we tried to make Ketupat. It was incredibly difficult but we showed great resilience to stick with the task and the Year 9’s helped us out. We also made paper this year as part of our learning in Making New Materials. We linked this learning to being sustainable on our day trip to the Green Guardian Environment Centre in KL. Of course, we also used technology to support us in our learning especially when we were presenting and reflecting on our learning.

044

TR IPS Year 5 took their learning out of the classroom and the school on many occasions over the year. In Term 1 we visited Merdeka Square and Masjid Jamek to learn about the history of KL for our IPC unit ‘Building a Village’. Also, as part of this unit we took a tour of Royal Selangor. In Term 2, we booked into Green Guardian to learn about how we can be sustainable in our daily lives. The second term also saw us interact with the numerous exciting exhibits at Pusat Sains in Damansara. Lots of people’s favourite trip came in the third term when we went to Berjaya Times Square Indoor Theme Park to learn about forces for our ‘Fairgrounds’ IPC unit. Learning is really fun inside and outside of Nexus!

045

CELEBRATIONS

In Year 5 we really like to believe that we put the ‘International’ into Nexus International School Malaysia! Just like our home and host country of Malaysia we celebrate all festivals equally with everybody! Over the year we have celebrated Deepavali, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Wesak Day, Hari Raya and more. We enjoyed wearing the traditional clothes of these celebrations, eating all the delicious food and creating art in different colourful styles. We welcomed visitors representing the different cultures and religions to our classroom so that we could find out more. International Mindedness is definitely one of the IPC Personal Goals that Year 5 can say we are Mastering at!

LEARNING activities

049

Wow! What a busy time of learning Year 6 have had in their last year of Primary at Nexus! They have learnt through every lens and enjoyed every minute of it! We have written stories in Language Arts using exciting actions; solved tricky problems in Maths; been in virtual reality through the lens of Art; created a Mars society in Minecraft when learning through the lens of technology and learnt about the shocking reality of food miles in geography! Just to name a few things. All of their learning has been personalised and engaging and most importantly fun!

050

TR IPS This year we have been on some fantastic school trips outside of the classroom. For Mission to Mars, our learners went to the Planetarium in Kuala Lumpur and learnt all about Space and our Solar System. During our Extreme Survivors unit the learners went on an adventure to the Zoo and focussed their learning on the animals’ habitats. During Earth as an island unit, the learners also visited the Mereka Space to think about how we can be sustainable on our Earth and support the Global Goals.

051

CELEBRATIONS

What a year full of celebrations it has been, we have been truly internationally minded by thinking about all of our home and host countries. Over the year we have celebrated Deepavali, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya. All of the learners looked fabulous dressing up in the appropriate traditional clothing, trying food from other cultures and learning about other traditions.

Head of Secondary

It has been a privilege to join the Nexus community and take on the role of Head of Secondary this year. My initial impression of the school as a dynamic and vibrant learning community has certainly been confirmed in the huge range of opportunities offered to our learners. It is difficult to identify highlights with so many to choose from! However, I have been especially impressed by events where the learners have been involved in either leading the activity or supporting each other. Events such as Sports Day, Global Goals Day and the school production of “We Will Rock You are really special as they showed our learners at our best in working with each other for a common goal. Equally, our MUN conference showed the amazing leadership capacities of our senior learners who organised a huge event for 300 guests from 14 schools. None of this would be possible of course without the support of our dedicated team of teaching staff. In lessons this year we have reviewed the curriculum in the Middle Years and look forward to launching our Nexus Core curriculum next year which will focus on the 21st century learning skills which will be so essential for all our learners as they move forward in life. We have also made changes to our programme for IGCSE and IB, introducing new subjects and ensuring that we are enabling as many learners as possible to pursue a personalised pathway. Support for Higher Education has also been a focus. We have had weekly visits from individual universities as well as university fairs with representatives from the UK, US and Canada here to talk to our senior learners about what they can offer. Thank you to all members of the school community for the warm welcome I received here and for your support and enthusiasm for all that we do here at Nexus. I hope you enjoy looking back on an outstanding year of learning - I look forward to many more.

As the backbone of Nexus, the Senior Leadership Team constantly supports learners in various ways, in order for everyone to have a chance for success and fun in their academic lives.

072

MILEPOST 1 STAFF

MILEPOST 3 STAFF 073

Milepost 1 is one of the first hurdles a learner has to overcome. Building on the foundations of Early Years, learners are now expected to develop their rigorous attitude towards learning while it is still being infused with exploration and play. We show you where to look but not what to see!

Milepost 3 is the pinnacle of primary education, fostering independence skills as we prepare learners for their launch into secondary school. As well as developing knowledge, skills and understanding, we promote independence, self-organisation, and growth mindset - as well as a sense of humour, adventure and fun.

science DEPT.

Science is about the discovery of knowledge and improving our understanding of everything around us. From the very big and far away, to the microscopic and close-by, we want to encourage Nexus learners to take an interest and develop a passion for science. The skills and knowledge acquired through the study of science at Nexus will promote critical and knowledgeable thinkers essential for life in the 21st century.

english DEPT.

At the heart of English is the fact that we all read, write and speak every single day of our lives. Whether it is using English as a language, exploring the world of literature, or simply using the skills developed in English lessons, this is the subject that helps us to empathise with others, and in doing so, understand more about ourselves as well. 074

ib team

MUSIC DEPT. 075

The IB Team is focused on supporting and guiding IB learners. The IB Team come from a range of subjects, with expertise in all of the core elements of the Diploma Programme, as well as expertise in applying to university. All of this expertise is brought together in the IB Hub, where the team is available to support learners through the journey that is the IB Diploma.

The Nexus Music Department teaches across the school and works to not only develop the abilities of the learners to engage in, and understand music on an increasingly deep level, but also provides rich and varied opportunities to perform and exhibit their work. The department has also more recently taken a stronger focus on helping students realise their creative visions in composition and production through improving the recording studio, incorporating more music technology, and implementing the AS Music Technology course.

Primary Inclusion

The Primary Inclusion team aims to support learners, parents and class teachers. Inclusion teachers love working with learners to help them with spelling, reading, maths, developing English and establishing meaningful friendships. At the core of the inclusion team’s work is ensuring that each learner is happy but at the same time appropriately challenged.

SECONDARY Inclusion

The Alternative Pathway provides personalised pathways for learners with more complex learning challenges, providing curricula that promote learning pathways towards qualifications and vocational careers. This is later complimented by a work related learning programme as learners work towards being independent and successful in life.

& alternative pathway

art DEPT.

Within the art studios, Nexus learners explore a range of different materials and techniques in order for their imaginations and ideas to come alive. They consider various sources of inspiration and learn to independently motivate each other to come up with exciting conclusions that realise their visual intentions for the audience.

p.e. DEPT.

The skills taught in Physical Education lessons improve learners’ knowledge of strategy and tactics. The PE Department aims to help learners transfer knowledge from one context to another, including sport, recreational and outdoor activities. Learners study the importance of teamwork and the need to communicate with their teammates constructively and positively; supporting and encouraging them so that everybody performs to their potential. Physical Education provides a range of opportunities for learners to challenge and extend themselves in an environment of managed risk.

lote DEPT.

THEATRE & FILM DEPT.

Nexus is a truly international environment in which linguistic and cultural diversity are celebrated. In LOTE, we strive to inspire learners to take pride in their mother tongue languages and to see the joy, fun and excitement that second language learning can bring. Our aim is to support every individual to embark on their own quest for fluency in their language, or languages, of choice.

In the Film and Theatre Arts Department we strive to ensure that all our students have the opportunity to create, to collaborate and to communicate in a variety of mediums and platforms. Learners have access to a wide range of specialist resources and guidance to help them produce creative work that they can be proud of. We believe that confidence is key and strive to help each learner develop this and find their voice in these creative lessons. 078

EXAM OFFICER

counsellors Counselling is the heart of the NISM community, a safe space to talk and self-reflect in a confidential and inspiring environment, especially during tough times. Nexus Counselling aims to guide, mediate, facilitate and support and resolve conflicts or concerns while nurturing life skills and personal strengths. It aspires to uphold the total welfare of individuals.

ICT DEPT. 079

Exams – a test of knowledge or skill and generally not popular! I provide information to teachers, learners, parents, and Exam Boards. There are many rules and regulations to comply with to ensure the integrity of the exams. I also hope I’m a friendly face to the learners - particularly in the exam room.

The IT team aims to provide ICT skills to both learners and teachers throughout the whole school. Whether this is learning to code or providing artistic skills using virtual reality, our hope is to provide rich technological skills to the Nexus community.

LIBRARY STAFF

The library is one of the key hubs of Nexus, where learners come sometimes for information or quiet study, and at other times as a pleasant environment to hang out with friends. Teachers also use the library for special learning groups and CCAs, and many parents like to spend time there too. Nexus Library offers a friendly welcome to all our members.

humanities DEPT.

In the Humanities department our aim is to develop internationally minded, flexible thinking learners who have the ability to work independently and think critically on a wide range of Humanities topics and issues. We encourage learners to ask and answer enquiry questions, investigate real-world examples and gain a deep understanding of world issues. We encompass a range of subjects, including History, Geography, Global Perspectives, Business, Economics and Psychology.

080

ADMIN STAFF

SECURITY TEAM 081

Even though most learners don’t recognize them, the Admin staff work dedicatedly behind the scenes to preserve and maintain the disbursement of the school. The day to day movement at school wouldn’t be without the hard work of the Admin Team.

People come and go everyday, but with the stability of the guards our safety, as members of the Nexus community, is always a guarantee.

SPRING BASH On April 5th, Learners from Years 7-9 had a fun filled evening at the Spring Bash despite the notorious Malaysian weather that threatened to upend the event. From board games to cup pong and dancing to requested tunes, the learners ended the evening with colorful satisfied faces from the holi powder and bubbles!

PROM Nexus’ Prom 2019 : Night of a Thousand Lights was hosted at the Hilton KL on the 15th of June. Learners from Year 10 and above celebrated the completion of another academic year with the annual prom. Taking inspiration from Tangled, the ballroom was decorated with essences of a disney fairytale from greenery to a plethora of fairy lights. Styled in dashing suits and extravagant dresses, everyone began to dance the night away to music by the dj and performances from a few learners after their meal by the chefs at the Hilton KL. How else to commemorate the annual event, if not a photo booth! which had learners lining up to capture the memories made that night.
