Axis Full Metal Jacket ™

Easton’s Axis Full Metal Jacket™ Turns Bowhunting Inside Out Salt Lake City, Utah, November 2005 Easton introduces the next technological advancement in carbon arrows—the all-new Axis Full Metal JacketTMwith Hidden Insert Technology—HIT®. The new and revolutionary Carbon Core™Axis Full Metal Jacket™is so new, so different it will turn the bowhunting world inside out. Easton engineers have taken A/C technology—the most advanced arrows ever made—and turned them inside out, by pushing the envelope of innovation to create patent-pending Carbon Core™construction. Axis FMJ features a small diameter, thick-wall carbon arrow armed in a bonepiercing full metal jacket, giving serious bowhunters just what they need—magnum big game stopping power. The new Axis FMJ provides even more durability and awesome penetration, yet delivers tight broadhead groups due to the accurate design of HIT®. The unique, patent-pending metal jacket helps Axis FMJ pull easier from high-density 3D targets, and fully encapsulates the carbon arrow to prevent carbon splinters when shot into game animals. Easton Bowhunting TV host Fred Eichler has been hunting with Axis FMJ™prototype arrows the entire 2006 hunting season with fantastic results. “Just when I thought my Axis arrows couldn’t be improved, Easton engineers design the ‘Full Metal Jacket.’ It’s like an Axis arrow on steroids, and it performs like one!” said Eichler. “From Alaskan brown bear, to mountain caribou, to big whitetail bucks, the kinetic energy and penetration I’ve experienced with the FMJ’s are absolutely incredible. FMJ’s knockdown power turns marginal hits into devastating, lethal shots.” Fellow Easton Prostaff hunter, Phil Phillips had this to say about the revolutionary FMJ. “My reoccurring shoulder problems made it difficult to shoot because of the pain in pulling my Axis carbon arrows out of 3D targets. But the ‘Easy Out’ target removal feature of the Axis Full Metal 6 Archery Magazine February/March 2006
Jacket makes shooting painless and fun again.” Axis Full Metal Jacket™is the best of all worlds— the straightness and consistency of an aerospace metal jacket, the durability and speed of carbon, and the ultra-small diameter benefits of Hidden Insert Technology. Check out the Axis Full Metal Jacket™ carbon arrow revolution today at your local archery pro shop, and feel the difference of a metal-jacketed Axis carbon arrow. Beman 9.3—The Affordable, All-Carbon Line-Cutter Salt Lake City, Utah, November 2005— Beman, first in carbon arrows, expands their target line with the addition of the new, large-diameter Beman 9.3™. Beman 9.3 is the affordable, big-bore target arrow designed to catch the 10-ring and pick up a few extra points on the 3D and target range. So you better check it out before the competition does—it’s stronger, more accurate and a great value. The Beman 9.3 has a large, 9.3-millimeter diameter that is FITA legal and provides target & 3D shooters the advantage of a fast, carbon line-cutter equipped with the accurate Super UNI Nock System to protect the nock of the shaft. Whether you are a serious target archer, or just like spending time shooting 3D targets at your local archery range, the Beman 9.3 can improve your score without breaking the bank. Beman 9.3—Big diameter, big performance and only from Beman. For more information on Beman’s 2006 line-up of carbon arrows, check out your local archery pro shop. The 2006 VEGAS SHOOT
Another Record Turnout at the Vegas Shoot. Seven Advance to Second Step of Million Dollar Jackpot! by Paul Davison
B
! s r e h c r A w o l l e F s g n i t e Gre new article here Sincerely, Bruce Cull
y the size of the mob waiting to pick up registration material Thursday afternoon, you knew that this was going to be a record turnout for the Vegas Shoot. Since practice space was at a premium last year, twenty more practice butts were added to the Riviera venue — outside the Convention Center, ten each in the two tennis courts. The weather was beautiful all weekend, and, except for the sun in one’s eyes in the afternoon, there was little difference between practice inside or outside. On the other hand, the Marked 3-D venue was relocated from the dark and windy parking garage to the front side of the Casino, above the Arcade in the “Bingo Room.” Although a little cramped for the spectators, and a longer walk from the Convention Center, the lighting and environmental conditions were superb. With ESPN suspending the Great Outdoor Games in 2006, the Archery Eliminator Qualifier was not held this year...resulting in about 100 fewer registrations. Nevertheless, total registration approached 1700 — bettering last year’s record by nearly 10%. Considering that were very few hitches with this many shooters, a hearty WELL DONE goes to Tournament Secretary, Marihelen Rogers, Tournament Director, Brian Sheffler, and their volunteer work crews and tournament officials. Thursday, February 9th In addition to being the primary practice day for nearly all
shooters, the showcase event of the day was the 7th Annual Indoor Marked 3-D Championship. Twenty-two, top-rated, professional shooters were entered in the 20-target, 20-end event. As usual, the was little difference in skill level among those entered. After the 4th end, Eric Griggs, Duane Price and Richard Leftwich were tied with 46’s ... two points off perfect. After the 8th end, there were two new leaders, Derry Null and Nathan Brooks, both with 92’s ... four points of perfect. Just two points behind were Mike Slinkard, Duane Price and Michael Anderson. After the 12th end, Nathan Brooks was alone in first with a 140, followed by Michael Anderson with a 138, and Tipton Cook and Derry Null, each with a 134. In the 14th end, Nathan Brooks shot the wrong animal for a zero! After the 16th end, the new leader was Mike Anderson with a 184, a mere eight points off perfect. Derry Null captured second with a 180, followed by four others at 176, including Tim Gillingham, Eric Griggs, Tipton Cook, and a rallying Nathan Brooks. Finally, after all twenty ends, Michael Anderson, with a 228 and fourteen 12’s, emerged as the $1500 winner of the first leg of the 2006 Indoor Marked 3-D Championship. Derry Null finished second with a 226 and fourteen 12’s worth $700. Nathan Brooks, Mike Slinkard and Richard Leftwich all finished with 220’s, but Nathan claimed “official” third place with an event-high, sixteen, perfect “12” ends (the remaining four were two 10’s, one 8, and one big fat 0!).

2006 VEGAS SHOOT—CONTINUED Friday, February 10th No less than fifty-one archers in four divisions shot perfect 300’s on Friday — led by Michael Anderson and Shane Wills with near-perfect 29 X’s in the Championship Freestyle Male Division. Dan Quintana, Jeff Ward, and England’s Chris White followed with 28 X’s. Rick Peters shot the sole 300 in the Championship Bowhunter Freestyle Division, with no less than thirteen tied for second with 299’s. Linda Owen (19 X’s), Georgiana Witt (18 X’s) and Doris Jones (16 X’s) all shot 299 in the Championship Freestyle Female Division. Ken Dunning and Gary Munson both shot 300 with 22 X’s in the Championship Senior Freestyle Division. Steve Boylan, David Bengston and Timothy Smith followed with 299’s. Randy Brabec and Jeff Fabry were tied with 295’s in Championship FSL (Compound), while Jay Lyon (297), Butch Johnson (294) and Vic Wunderle (293) were the top three in the Championship FSL Recurve Male Division. In Championship FSL Recurve Female, the top three were Jennifer Nichols (289), Khatuna Lorig (283) and Amanda Nichols (282). Finally, in the eighth Championship Division, “Anything-Without-Sights-and-Releases,” also known Barebow, Rick Stark led with a 285, followed by Gil Wilson and Teddy Kibel, with 284 and 282, respectively. This was a particularly fun group since it included IFAA Longbow, NFAA Traditional, IFAA Recurve Barebow, NFAA Barebow and NFAA Bowhunter; for both men and women and all adult ages. You may have already noticed that there is new style nomenclature for the Vegas Shoot this year. Style words such as “Unlimited,” “Compound” and “Classic” have been essentially eliminated in favor of NFAA style nomenclature. Saturday, February 11th This second of three days is when all adults get to shoot with their competition, as well as the final day for all Cubs, Youth and Young Adults. It’s certainly not intentional that we’re leaving out the kids, as well as the Crossbow shooters, and all other non-Championship shooters, from this write-up, it’s that there is just not enough space in the magazine. All day-by-day scores, however, are shown in the accompanying tallies. Those remaining perfect through the second day of competition was reduced from 51 to 17 — 13 in the Championship Freestyle Male Division and four in the Freestyle Flight 1. Chris White was the best of the bunch with 600 and 58 X’s. Michael Anderson, Jesse Broadwater and Dave Cousins followed with 55 X’s. Evan Baize (599-45 X’s) moved into the lead in Championship Bowhunter Freestyle, followed by Perry Harping (59944 X’s) and Rick Peters (599-39 X’s). Doris Jones, Tiffany Reeves and Ginger Morehead all shot 300 today in the Championship Freestyle Female Division. Doris’s 599 total led Tiffany and Ginger by one point. In Championship Senior Freestyle, both Steve Boylan and Ken Denning totaled 599, but Steve led by one “X,” 44 to 43. Ed Horn, Gary Munson and David Bengston were tied for third place with 597’s. Jeff Fabry moved ahead of Randy Brabec by three points, 593 to 588, in the Championship FSL Division, while Chris Stauffer remained close with a 588. In the Championship FSL Recurve Male Division, Friday’s leader Joe Lyon dropped an additional 14 points to 580 and a tie for fourth. Vic Wunderle moved into the lead with a 588, followed by Butch Johnson (587) and Shawn Rice (582). Jennifer Nichols (577) and Khatuna Lorig (572) remained 1-2 in the Championship FSL Recurve Female Division. In Barebow, Teddy Kibel moved from third to first with a 561, followed very closely by Rick Stark and Tom Daley with 560 and 559, respectively. Just as every sport has their crowd-pleasing way of breaking ties at the championship level, the Vegas Shoot is rather unique. While X-count is used to determine the order of finish in the non-championship divisions and flights, all Vegas Championship shooters tied (without regard to X-count) for first place after ninety arrows must face an end-by-end shoot-off in front of a very boisterous audience. The Vegas shoot-off rules are as follows: After two ends of sudden death using standard Vegas scoring, the third and subsequent ends are scored with the X-ring as a “10.” All other “gold” hits are scored as “9’s.” With ten in 2004 and six last year, just five Championship Freestyle men were tied with 900’s after Sunday’s final round: Dave Cousins, Chris White (a 2005 finalist), Jesse Broadwater, Shane Wills and Lee Ford. The shoot-off moved surprisingly quickly. After two ends of “normal” scoring, Lee Ford was the first to drop out with a 29. Then in the third end, with the Xring only as a “10,” Cousins, Wills and White all hit 29, while Jesse Broadwater scored a perfect 30. As 2006 Champion, Jesse was awarded $15,000 from the WAF, plus a $2,500 bonus for being an NFAA Pro, plus more than $16,000 in contingency money from his sponsors. Broadwater, Cousins, Ford, White, Wills, Annen and Morgan, all with scores of 900 for the Vegas Shoot, are automatically in the running to win the WAF 3-Star Tour’s One Million Dollars. To win the million, they must now shoot 600 with 120 X’s at the Louisville Indoor Nationals, as well as a perfect 1200 at the Stanislawski Open in Pittsburgh. As always, NFAA membership is required to shoot the Indoor Nationals. In the seven remaining Championship Divisions, Evan Baize held on to win the Championship Bowhunter Freestyle Division with a 899. With 898-73 X’s, Grant Schleusner nudged out Perry Harping (898-65 X’s) for second. Canadian Doris Jones won the Championship Freestyle Female Division with a superb 899. Christie Colin (2nd), Tiffany Reeves (3rd), Ginger Morehead (4th) all shot 897’s, but Christie moved from fifth to second based on a best-of-the-group 63 X-count. There wasn’t much movement in the Championship Senior Freestyle Division. Steve Boylan (898) was a meager one point better than Ken Denning and two points better than Ed Horn. Defending champion Jeff Fabry repeated in the Championship FSL (Compound) Division. His 889 was two points better than Randy Brabec’s 887. Chris Stauffer finished third with 884. After domination by Butch Johnson for several years, the 2006 Championship FSL Male Recurve Division winner is Vic Wunderle. Butch matched his last year’s winning score of 879, but it was six points less than Vic’s outstanding 885. First day leader, Canadian Jay Lyon, finished third with a 872. In the Championship FSL Female Recurve Division, defending champion Jennifer Nichols’ 867 was 12 points better than Khatuna Lorig’s 855. Andrea Garner remained in third place with a 847. Last, but don’t tell them “least,” the Championship Barebow Division medalists are Teddy Kibel (839), Leonard Loftus (838) and Rick Stark (837) — a very closely-contested finish. With six of eight NFAA 2006 Shooter of the Year events remaining, it’s much too early to make predictions. However, with Michael Anderson’s Marked 3-D championship and sixth place in the Vegas Shoot, he certainly is a “contenda” for Male Shooter of the Year. All 2006 Vegas Shoot results are tabulated in the accompanying lists. Can’t find the person you’re seeking? Sallie Robie won the top female money division taking home the $1,000.00 first prize plus contingency money from the sponsors. Bob Eyler won the top male money division receiving $2,000.00 plus sponsor contingency money. Stephen Boylan won the top senior male money division receiving $425.00 plus contingency money. Perry Harpring won the top money division in bow hunter freestyle receiving $490.00 plus contingency and Robert Besanceney won the male freestyle limited receiving $278.00 plus contingency. The popular venue of the 360 round on Saturday and the 330 round on Sunday gives archery a new look by giving the average archer a second chance to win. This tournament being the first one of the year is held in Mason City, Iowa surrounded by plenty of hotels and an ample supply of fantastic places to eat. Being a central location close to Minneapolis and Des Moines with a Northwest Airlines regional right in Mason City makes this tournament easy
to get to. The tournament has been sold out the last two years, so they are figuring out how to add more shooting lines to make room for everyone to shoot. The unique part of this tournament is the trade show giving the average shooter exposure to the archery manufacturers. This is held in the same building while the tournament is going on. This year’s tournament was only possible because of the generosity of the industry sponsors that have supplied the guaranteed money and the contingency for all of the winners. (PLATINUM SPONSORSHIP) MATHEWS, INC.; (SILVER SPONSORS) HOYT, BOWTECH, COPPER JOHN CORP, SPECIALTY ARCHERY, L.L.C., EASTON TECHNICAL PRODUCTS, DELTA INDUSTRIES AND GOLD TIP. Please support these sponsors with your purchases. The 2007 schedule is January 6th and 7th. Make your plans now! Check the web site for details:www.isaaproam.com

TED NUGENT APPOINTED AMBASSADOR FOR BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS AND PASS IT ON MENTOR PROGRAM Big Brothers Big Sisters, in partnership with the Pass It On Texas Outdoor Mentors Program, is proud to appoint American sporting legend Ted Nugent as Ambassador and Director of Youth Hunting. In his role as Ambassador, Mr. Nugent will help promote the highl y successful programs, which match children with qualified adult mentors. Within Pass It On, mentors and kids alike share a particular interest in our outdoor heritage, with an emphasis on the understanding, protection and restoration of our natural ecosystems. “Speaking from personal experience, the mesmerizing, stimulating natural relationship with God’s mystical creatures, and nature overall, will always guide a young person on the True North compass setting,” stated Nugent. “The tooth, fang and claw dynamic provides the ultimate attention-getter, challenge and quest for personal excellence that a youngster could ever dream of. The discipline I’ve learned in the hunting and shooting sports lifestyle will provide the utmost quality of life for any child, as it does for me.”
Pass It On, Big Brothers Big Sisters’ outdoor mentoring program, was launched in 2000, when Steve Williams, then secretary of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and now director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas to promote outdoor mentoring. Children involved in the program who engage in shooting and hunting activities receive hands-on training in safety as required by BBBS and state wildlife agency regulations. The majority of those introduced to traditional outdoor sports by a mentor continue to participate in those sports. Founded in 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters is the preeminent youth mentoring program in the United States Enriching, encouraging and empowering youngsters to reach their highest potential through safe, positive mentoring relationships is the agency’s mission. BBBS fulfills this mission through a professional staff that works with both volunteers and children to ensure a dynamic, fulfilling, memorable and fun experience.

www.tnkfk.comwww.tnkfk.comwww.tnkfk.comwww.tnkfk.comwIn 1989, we created our beloved TED NUGENT KAMP FOR KIDS as a nonprofit 501C3 charity to attract American children into that higher level of awareness that is the discipline of the shooting sports and an outdoor lifestyle that I, and so many families, celebrate and cherish daily. With my xploding and xpanding responsibilities increasing over the years, The TNKFK Board of Directors is reviewing how best to move the TNKFK dream forward for maximum upgrade. We are excited and look forward to continuing our hard work and efforts in 2007, as we forge ahead with our success of getting kids away from drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gangs, crime, and the zombie world of
videogame disconnect that has been such a negative force on their lives. We have seen how genuinely moved the kids and their families are following each session of our Kamps for the last 17 years now. The growth and prognosis is clearly a win win for the kids, their families and friends, and ultimately for the future of conservation and constitutional rights in America. We sincerely thank all the generous volunteers and donators to TNKFK. WeâTMll see ya next year! God bless America and Godspeed the kids.

by Ted Nugent simple recipe health food Based on the continued deluge of correspondence that Shemane and I receive from readers of our “KILL IT & GRILL IT” cookbook, there is apparently a wonderful wave of diet upgrade taking place across America and beyond. Whew! Now that’s good news for anybody paying attention to the deathmarch of self-inflicted junkfood goofiness that is killing Americans at record numbers out there. Between the insanity of obesity, unprecedented numbers of diabetes-2, and untold heart disease and assorted stupid-food health problems, I’d say it’s about time people started showing some responsible choices out there. I mean after all, the universal, longrunning evidence proving the pandemic of life threatening conditions due to the gluttony of chemicalladen processed foods has brought America to her once strong knees. Bad diet is the nation’s leading cause of death today. Alert!! PopTarts aint food! Yikes! Upgrade is good. I seek it constantly and find it often. In fact, the prime impetus for overall quality of life upgrade certainly must begin with the choice of fuel we feed our sacred temple. From quality food comes quality of life, which enhances our capability to pursue more progressive ideas in every aspect of life. It’s like a huge positively charged runaway snowball of higher awareness. I’m a big

fan. Enter protein on the hoof. The perfect food. Venison. Wildgame. Purity. Perfection. God’s gift of ultimate renewable sustenance. I’m telling you, you cannot go wrong with this stuff. The higher level of awareness that must go into each hunt awakens us to many other needs for thoughtful clarity. For if we stumble in the woods, we will be forced to buy some feathered salmonella bombs, and that aint good for anybody. My idea of a freerange chicken would have to include some free range. Hold the chicken, unless of course he came here from China and explodes all gaudy out of a sea of wild weeds and prairie grasses and cattails. Sacred flesh fit for a king, and seeing as how I’m king of my castle, pheasant is served fresh on the BBQ grill often at camp Nuge. Now take that pheasant, or quail, grouse, squirrel, woodcock, rabbit, moose, deer, bear, turkey, elk, caribou, cougar, antelope, kudu, warthog or any other splendid game critter you so happen to fortunately bring to bag, and let’s get it on, shall we? It really doesn’t matter one twither what kind of creature we use for this basic preparation, for as long as you have fun in the pursuit, kill it with spirit and keep the flesh clean and cold, the foundation for this recipe is gonna be A1, I assure you. Though aging is good for all but the bear and porcine haunches, it isn’t all that necessary anyway. But clean and cold always is. Over a good bed of natural wood or charcoal coals, on a clean grill place your meat a few inches above the heat. Basting lightly with a garlic butter and seasoning goop made up of garlic pepper, garlic salt, cilantro, parsley flakes and some Cajun gris gris thrown in, let the slabs singe till golden brown with
a hint of blackened grill tattoos. In a handmade trough of double heavy duty aluminum foil, melt a stick of butter, diced onions, garlic, tomatoes, more garlic salt and pepper, more cilantro and parsley, and stir around a wad of sliced potatoes and red and green and orange peppers till all these veggies are coated nicely with the aromatic, flaky goo. Keep it sizzling over the coals sealed best you can. Take the singed meat and slice it into bite sized morsels and add it to the simmering cocktail of sensual delight within the smoldering aluminum package. Go ahead and add another stick of butter and a splash of your favorite white wine if you dare, reseal and let it bubble and throttle for another thirty to forty-five minutes. Be sure you’re surrounded by people you love and enjoy being with. This is just too good not to share with special people. The way I’ve got it down, from firestart to chowtime is only about one hour. And what a grand one hour around the life giving firepit it is, my friends. However, no matter how much fun the hunt itself may have certainly been, and no matter how salivating the cooking pleasure, it is indeed this next hour with family and friends that is truly the payoff. And don’t serve this stewy, goulashy thing on a regular old plate. Be sure it is served in a deep dish or even a large shallow bowl, because though each bite is an orgy for the palate, it’s the soupy glop that you will die for. And I know, I know, I know, all that butter scares most people, but I’m here to tell you, at 56 years of age, my heart and cholesterol is much like that of a young, angry tiger. As long as we don’t poison ourselves with tobacco, drugs or other poisonous chemicals, get a reasonable amount of decent exercise, these kinds of meals will fuel your mind, body and soul with nothing but positive forces. And your taste buds will never settle for prefab garbage again. Go wild and go often. Order Ted and Shemane’s “KILL IT & GRILL IT” autographed for everyone in your life you think could use some upgrade at tednugent.com or 800-3434868. Archery Magazine February/March 2006 27

BIG SKY OPEN The coordinators of the Big Sky Open proudly announces plans for two, yes two, Big Sky Open tournaments for 2006! The first, is the 25th annual Big Sky Open to be held in Grand Junction, Colorado on June 9, 10 and 11 at the DoubleTree Hotel. Actually, it is the same place it has been held since taking the tournament to Grand Junction in 1984, it’s just the hotel keeps changing its name.
Major sponsor s are Sportsmans Warehouse, Mathews, Inc., Martin Archey, while Hoyt, Rocky Mountain Bowstrings, Specialty Archery Products, Easton Technology, Gold Tip, Jake’s Archery, the DoubleTree Hotel, the Oasis, Virgin River and CasaBlanca Hotels, and The US Archer magazine are helping to Co-Sponsor the tournaments. Our thanks to all who are helping to make these fine tournaments possible for all the participating archers and spectators.
The second is what we hope will be a long running tournament, the first annual Big Sky Open tournament in Mesquite, Nevada slated for November 3, 4 and 5 and hosted by the Oasis, Virgin River and CasaBlanca Hotels.
Both weekends are going to be fun as we are planning some really cool things for the enjoyment of everyone. So make you plans, pack your bags, and come to Grand Junction and Mesquite for two very great weekends!
Both tournaments will have the “GoForIt” clay pigeon team events plus regular competition on the colored targets for prize money. The “best of the best” will receive an added bonus check if he or she wins both tournaments, concluding, of course in Mesquite. Both tournaments are NFAA Pro-Sanctioned.
For more information, call 970-243-1319 or check the Colorado State Archery Association website, the Sportsmans Warehouse website, the NFAA Archery magazine or the US Archer magazine for registration forms and more details.

Add second paragraph to “2002.” Entire item now reads: 2002: Outdoor National Tournament The preferred format for the Outdoor National Tournament shall be five days, Monday through Friday, with flights determined after the second day. Effective 2008: The Outdoor National Tournament will be a 3/5 day format, Wednesday through Sunday. Rounds will be Field, Hunter, Animal, Field, Hunter, in that order. Five-day shooters will shoot all five days, and count only their better Field and better Hunter Round scores. Three-day shooters may register for first three, middle three, or last three days. Archers must register for the days they will shoot. Page 86. Under 2003: The Certified Instructor Program ...., “Requirements for Master Coach Level course:” (on Page 87) change fifth sentence to read: “Students must be Advanced Certified Instructors.” Page 89. Course approval, Paragraph 10: Distance on either side of a target to be free from archers shall range from 15 to 30 degrees from the shooting position (depending upon conditions and length of the shot). Page 92. 2006: At National and Sectional Outdoor Tournaments, spectators may be allowed with a shooting group at the pleasure and permission of the entire group. Page 92. 2006: It should be understood that effective 2006, it will be the NFAA’s policy that at any NFAA hosted Championship Tournament, NFAA rules and only NFAA rules and styles will be recognized. This means no separate score cards or targets for other countries or organizations, or scoring methods will be allowed or recognized. Page 97, Appendix 4. In the third column of table (ANIMAL ROUND MAX-MIN YARDS), change “60-45” to “65-40” four places. Page 98, Appendix 5. Delete Male and Female Master Senior Pro (last two rows) from table.
Director. RIC 2005-2 Decision overturned by Directors A Manufactures query was submitted to the RIC concerning the S T S Shock Terminator suppressor. There is a rubber mount on the end of what looks like a cable guard, which stops the string from vibrating after the shot. Committee Decision: It is the consensus of the RIC that it is legal in all the styles of the NFAA competition. RIC 2005-3 Decision upheld by Directors At the Midwest Sectional Tournament, an archer requested a free membership in the Pro Division as per the new rules for new applicants to the Pro Division. The Tournament protest committee ruled that since the rules state than an invitation to an applicant for a free membership in the Pro Division is needed, and none had been sent, that the applicant had to pay the Pro Dues to compete in that division. Committee Decision: RIC agrees with the protest committee that the applicant must pay the Pro dues until receiving an invitation from the Pro Division for one year’s free Pro membership.
RIC 2006-1 Decision overturned by Directors The California Director was asked to rule on the legality of an archer shooting a tournament while sitting in a chair. Citing RIC 2004-3, it was ruled that it would be legal for an archer to shoot while sitting. However, on page 56, under Indoor shooting rules, 4.1, an archer shall stand so that he has one foot on either side of the shooting line. Since it says “stand”, the CA Director ruled that an archer must stand while shooting. Committee Decision: It is the consensus of the RIC that the reference cited by the CA Director is for the shooting positions, ie: straddling the line vs. toeing the line. Therefore, the RIC does not agree with the California Director. RIC 2006-2 Decision overturned by Directors The New York NFAA Director was asked for the definition of the term “chew strap”. DIRECTOR’S RULING/INTERPRETATION: Nowhere in the NFAA Constitution & By-Laws is the term “chew strap” defined. The New York Director ruled that the definition of a chew strap is: “A releasing device, used by a competitor in place of their fingers, in order to shoot an arrow”. RIC Ruling : A chew strap is a mouth release that is used in lieu of using ones fingers to shoot an arrow. By definition, a release.
RIC 2005-1 decision upheld by directors The California Director was asked if a hand held clicker would be legal in competitive bowhunter. The archer draws the bow, then squeezes the clicker till it sounds, then releases the arrow. The Director ruled that it is not legal to use a clicker in Competitive Bowhunter. Committee Decision: RIC agrees with the California Archery Magazine February/March 2006 35

If you are into this sport at all, by now you surely know that ALL bows are considered primitive weapons because their projectile is so dramatically SLOW that it makes “knowing the exact distance to the target” extremely important. If you accurately aim your high powered deer rifle while using a 100 yard sight setting that is 200 yards in error for a 300 yard target, we expect to impact a few inches low but probably still so close it will still be relatively effective. But as archers if you were to try shooting at a 30 yard target with an accurate 10 yard sight setting we know that being 20 yards in error is more than enough to result in a hit so extremely low it can miss the entire target or animal. Typically the comparison between a rifle and an arrow in this situation is approximately10 times greater meaning a 2 inch low rifle miss equates to a totally unacceptable 20 inch miss without the slightest chance of an effective hit for score or harvest. Disadvantages such as this define the rationale for safer archery only seasons to give them safer opportunities to pursue better concealment while seeking closer proximities. THE PURPOSE OF ALL SHOOTING SPORTS IS TO HIT WHAT YOU AIM AT. I submit that it not always necessary to hit your target, but that while hunting our wildlife is the best possible time. However, on the target range it is not actually necessary to excel so there is really no need to drive yourself and everyone around you crazy as some do. For those of us who donʼt feel the need of working that hard it is just fine, there is nothing wrong with enjoying your recreational time and calling it a successful outing by merely finding all of our arrows at the end of the day. So the thoughts contained herein are more for those working toward near-perfect target scores or those trying to be the best they can possibly be when hunting wildlife. AIMING IS THE REAL NAME OF THE GAME. Robertʼs Rule of Archery #2 states, “Always work with the attitude that there is no such thing as ʻclose enoughʼ and every shot is either a hit or a miss and there is nothing in-between.” Learning to hold still on precisely what you want to hit and then shooting only under that condition is hard enough to
accomplish, but when your sight settings are not correct for that specific situation you will still produce a miss even though you personally performed everything else flawlessly! Drats! I believe that making and maintaining a perfect set of sight markings as long as you possibly can will prevent wasting time that would be better spent practicing and becoming a better shooter, not a better mechanic. A good set of sight marks is hard to come by and should be understood and then cherished. It is extremely wasteful, frustrating, silly and actually pretty dumb to make a new scale from scratch every time you “tweak” something or make a minor change. For starters, I suggest you never try to make a scale at all until you are “through playing mechanic.” Donʼt worry about sight setting accuracy until you are ready to knuckle down and become a “shooter” and not a “whiner” always looking for someone else to blame after every missed shot. PERFECT SIGHT SCALES ARE CONSISTENTLY SPACED AND DO NOT VARY. But, only when you have both a solid front and solid rear sight reference point. This means that as the distance increases the spacing between the references will gradually increase as well. That is, the space between the 70 to 80 must be slightly wider than the 60 to 70, which is wider than the 50 to 60, which is wider than the 40 to 50, which is wider than the 30 to 40, which is wider than the 30 to 20. NOTE: Based on the speed of the arrow the settings for less than 20 yards or so are very circumstantial due to distance at which your arrow will rise up to and cross through your line of sight. See the Jan-Feb 02 Archery issue for more details. So let this clarify the reason it may be true when you hear someone say, “sometime I have to use odd spacing between certain distances on my scale.” But, “since I donʼt have a solid rear sight reference I have to use some odd spacing between certain distances on my scale.” would be more accurate in my mind. You already know that a front sight can be essentially

WITH A PEEP, ACCEPT NO ODD SPACING EVER. If you are aiming and shooting with a peepsight and can prove to your own absolute satisfaction that you must indeed have an odd spaced reference mark or two in a certain area of your scale then you have no choice but to use it as you see it. Even if you are a peep user it may still be that you are not using the same sight picture in those areas due to not pivoting the entire bow on the center of the peephole. If you are “centering in the bottom half” of the hole on your 50 but the “top half of the hole” on your 60 for example, your

SETTING UP WITH A PEEPSIGHT. Now, if you suspect you are not centering up identically in your peep sight opening for every shot here are a few things that you may be able to improve on. Many hunters for example, tend to want larger peepholes thinking they need the extra lightning for the times they get into low light conditions. I canʼt tell you how many times while using a larger peephole for better lighting I sat there late hoping to get a deer shot just at dark. Then, after slowly getting accustomed to the darkness and still thinking I had plenty of light I drew back to aim at one but found I couldnʼt “see a thing” and had to let down anyway. My point is, Iʼd rather be more accurate all day on all my shooting by having a peep easier to center-up in than to sacrifice some centering up accuracy on the slim chance that I might, someday, get a shot 5 minutes later into the evening that Iʼd otherwise have to pass up with a smaller peephole. It may also be that your basic peep location is causing you to be “floating around” back there more than you have to. And the easier it is to float around, the easier it is to not be well aligned. Since we all shoot more arrows from around 20 yards I suggest that this is the best place to become as solid as possible. So, come to full draw aiming at 20 and then close your eyes and hold it and get all settled in as comfortably as you can possibly be. Then open you eyes and if the peep is too high or too low then move it until it is perfect. Then, when you change to a 10 yard target setting you should be a little “crowded” as you scrunch up to get into that position but as the distance increases youʼll find you will have more and more room and feel more and more sloppy. As I said earlier, as your bow arm raises higher and higher for a higher trajectory the entire bow is “pivoting on the peep hole” and you will
find your release aid and your arrow nock will pivot “farther and farther down and away from your eye.” So you can now see how an accurately made sight scale made for pivoting on the peep hole would not have the same spread rate as one continually pivoting on a cheekbone which is always the same distance from the eye. This should help you understand how interior sight marks may seem to “roam around” for finger shooters without a peep and not duplicating their anchor precisely on every shot. Another thing that may help is to setup so you can centerup the peep on the entire scope housing. On a target scope front sight with a small aiming, you canʼt expect to be very accurate trying to center that small aiming speck in the peephole, so you can be more precise by obtaining a larger peep hole and center the entire housing and then put that aiming speck on the point you wish to hit. A size that will barely reveal light all around the housing makes it so much easier to accurately center-up as you allow the same amount of daylight around the entire housing. Itʼs more difficult when using pin sights, you have a choice of making odd marks to match if you center up the entire front sight somehow and then put the pin or blank gap in the spacing being placed on the point you wish to hit. Odd yardage distances are not easy with pins and there are several techniques in use. TO KEEP YOUR EXISTING GOOD SIGHT REFERENCES. 1. The same arrows in every detail are usually a prerequisite. 2. Keep the peep sight height the same distance above your nocking point. 3. In my mind, the only reason there is to ever measure your arrow velocity is so you can adjust it back to that exact figure and use your original sight scale. Be sure to use the same chronograph device when trying to set the speed back exactly where it was. 4. Keep your sight bar and sight scale the same distance from your eye. If you move the scale to a different distance from your eye you will need a completely new scale with a different overall spread. So after certain
The spacing on these typical 20, 30, 40, 50 & 60 “shot-generated” settings look pretty good to the naked eye, but look at all the lows hits that are doomed to happen between 20 and 60. The accurate computer generated scale by Archer’s Advantage (www. archersadvantage.com) reveals all of the misses just waiting to happen even when this archer does everything else perfectly.
repairs are made, the same arrows can be set back to the exact same speed and you can accurately calibrate back on to the original scale with the pointer needle provided on all target sights. DON’T BEAT YOURSELF, MAKE THEM OUTSHOOT YOU. So it is really dumb to keep changing things and spend your life making completely new sighting scales. It means you will spend most of your time as a mechanic “setting up” and never really working to become a “shooter.” Do you realize how many archers are doomed to failure after being a “mechanic” for days and days and days and then try to generate a sight scale just before dark the day the last day and never practiced or checked them for accuracy under combat conditions? If you panic and start making new marks every time you decide to tweak your nocking point or have to set your sight at 49 1/2 yards to hit 50 dead center you are doing nothing more than making your job even harder than it already is. There can be any number of reasons why you needed to set your sight “short” for that 50 yard field target so donʼt feel your scale is all wrong every time you have to fudge it a little to be happy. The idea is to “do what it takes as soon as possible” not to solve a riddle. Keep your bow consistent and make it work using what you have. Pay attention and know what you feel you have to do to put every shot as close to dead center as possible. Always stay alert to the variations you have had to make on the same course since all courses do not play the same for several reasons. Also, I advise never walking up to some strange practice area with what you are certain is a perfect setup and then start making “corrections” when it appears suspicious. I suggest intentionally using an incorrect sight setting and just shooting for groups to warm up since this is not the time and definitely not the place to evaluate any more than your form.

worthless without a rear sight to align it with. In archery a peepsight is the best rear “reference point” but it is not automatically a “solid anchor point” as most presume. It is only a “solid” anchor point when the archer holds the nock of the arrow at the exact same distance below his aiming eye. In order to do that the eye must be centered the same place in the peep opening. Just putting the front sight reference anyplace in the peephole is not keeping the nock the exact same distance from your eye. Yes, you are right, we are “splitting hairs” here but it is the difference between making a hit and making a miss. As your bow arm is raised higher and higher to generate a higher trajectory the entire bow must “pivot on the center of the peep hole” to be totally effective. Notice that as you set your sight to increasing distances your arrow nock and release aid will pivot “farther and farther down and away from your eye.”
marks will have to moved to make them match your error. So your scale will look strange as you avoid being low on the 50 by placing it where 52 (or so) should be and the 60 where 58 (or so) should be to avoid high hits there. The reason I suggest you NEVER accept odd spaced marks is that if you accept and try to use odd spaced settings as described above you will at least subconsciously worry about that area and on a Field Round for example, never know for sure if it was the conditions on that course or the variations of your odd marks that cost you the misses you experienced. For example, if you happened to be on a slightly uphill 50 yard face those shots you missed “high” were probably a result of the raised bow arm causing you to no longer center up “low” in the peep as you usually do but more correctly near the center which means your “odd” 50 mark became the 52 it should have been. If you do not use a peep there is nothing to do but try to always use the same anchor point at each distance that you used when you made that particular setting. If you understand that with an under the chin anchor for example, something as simple as not clenching your teeth the same on each shot will change the distance between the tail of the arrow and your aiming eye so it is no different than when someone moves their peep to a new location for that shot. This situation might also explain why some of your marks appear to be wrong on some occasions but apparently seem okay on others.

A sliding sight with a scale in 1 yard increments isn’t very effective either when it is marked with MISSES JUST WAITING TO HAPPEN. Fix them and your score comes up instantly with the same amount of effort on your part. Archery Magazine February/March 2006 45

hen I was at a field tournament, I met a young man on the practice range who approached me and asked, “Could you please help me?” “What’s the problem?” I inquired. He replied, “I have been shooting great and thought I might win this tournament, but I can’t hit anything this morning.”

It’s reminiscing time once again. Although I was home-based in Ohio, where I was Ohio Archers president, my employer, Rockwell International, had me working in Orange County, California, about 75% of the time from June 1975 through June 1976. I maintained an efficiency apartment, had access to a leased car, and even managed to find some archery action on weekends. I practiced quite a bit at Long Beach’s El Dorado Park, future venue for 1984 Olympics archery competition. Although it took me some time to find their range (then in Irvine), I also shot a 28-Field practice round with the Oranco Bowmen, and even attended one of their monthly club meetings. I was impressed with both the friendliness and organizational efficiency of this big California NFAA club. We had nothing like it in Ohio. Fortuitously, California was the hosting the 1976 NFAA Board of Directors meeting in early February at the Queensway Hilton in nearby Long Beach ... just a few hundred yards from the Queen Mary. The Ohio Director, Bob Brenneman, invited me to attend the meeting as his guest. I didn’t know it at the time, but Bob was grooming me as his replacement, and had managed to get me
Alternate Director credentials. I was even seated at the Great Lakes table. I was in awe. Back in Ohio, we rarely had an archery business meeting without a lot screaming arguments and even downright chaos. Here, the meeting was conducted in strict accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order. Even the influential and friendly adversaries John Slack of California and Bill Boyle of New York, both with the maximum five votes, were held in check. Erv Kreischer, the NFAA President and Chairman of the meeting, was not only an outstanding leader and no-nonsense manager, but also an expert in parliamentary procedure. The Sergeant of Arms was never needed. This meeting was also my first exposure to the “legislative committee” approach for acting on proposed rule changes. Just as with the U.S. Congress and Senate, all “bills” first get a recommendation for either “adoption” or “no action” at the committee level before being presented to the full body. This filtering process probably saves a full day of the Directors’ time. Erv Kreischer later congratulated the Directors for the “best meeting ever.” Even without this endorsement, I knew that I wanted to be a part of this NFAA management team. I was just a journeyman archer, but after this meeting, I felt that I could make a better contribution to our sport as an administrator rather than a shooter. This exercise is relaxing and is a definite confidence booster. When preparing for the next tournament, set your goals where they should be directed. Avoid Tournament Anxiety After watching him shoot, I suggested that we go off to the side and talk for a while. He had built up so much anxiety that his muscles were too tense to execute a good shot. When we redirected his thinking and I showed him how to relax his muscles, he was able to shoot groups that made me envious. Most archers handicap themselves before they shoot their first arrow. Their pre-tournament thought process builds anxiety to the point that it creates nervousness and muscle tension. Their thinking is directed at winning the tournament, impressing their friends, or beating a buddy. Do not forget that the main reason we shoot is because we enjoy it. Our main goal should be to shoot the best possible tournament that we are capable of shooting. Realistically, this will not be good enough for most archers to take home a trophy. The capability of the top archer is higher than the average archers because they have worked very hard to raise their shooting to that level. Concentration, good form, a strong mental attitude, and lots of practice have raised the top level of archers to a new high.
best form that you can accomplish. If you achieve this goal, you will have had the best tournament that you are capable of shooting. If this is not good enough to satisfy your expectations, then seek help from a professional coach. He or she should be able to assist you in reaching the level you wish to achieve.
All archers should set their goals to shoot the best that they are capable of shooting at each tournament. If you can do that, you are a winner. If you want to shoot better, then you will have to raise your capability by working harder. The pretournament focus should be directed at a positive mental image of yourself executing a shot with perfect form. This will enhance a positive attitude and will help relax your mind and muscles. If you’re thinking process goes back to winning, quickly replace those thoughts with the image of you shooting a specific target such as a 50-yard target or Archery Magazine February/March 2006 47
