NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED
TONIGHT
By Brian Hurlburt
Congressional Medal of Honor Citation (partial)
Robert Ingram
Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Robert Ronald Ingram will receive yet another honor for his bravery during the Vietnam War. But he wants everyone to understand one important item as he accepts the NFR Military Honors presented by Boot Barn.
“This honor is not about me, it's about the team that I was with, and all recognition goes to them,” Ingram says. “I accept this in their honor and the memories of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”
Ingram accepted his Congressional Medal of Honor July 10, 1998, three decades after his action date. His team lobbied for him to receive the award so many years later, proving they believed he was more than deserving.
Ingram was with the Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Quang Ngai Province, Republic of Vietnam when he went above and beyond. He was injured multiple times, but continued to rescue his fallen teammates.
“I was a Navy Hospital corpsman attached to the Marine Corps, and I became part of that team,” Ingram says. “It was an excellent team chosen by their leaders and by the generals. The jobs they gave them were the most difficult jobs, and we performed them well. We lost a lot of men, but probably less so because we were such a good team. We got in a bad situation, but when you are as tight as we were, everybody is for everybody. The fighting spirit came out in everybody.”
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as Corpsman with Company C, First Battalion, Seventh Marines against elements of a North Vietnam Aggressor (NVA) battalion in Quang Ngai Province Republic of Vietnam on 28 March 1966. Petty Officer Ingram accompanied the point platoon as it aggressively dispatched an outpost of an NVA battalion. The momentum of the attack rolled off a ridge line down a tree covered slope to a small paddy and a village beyond. Suddenly, the village tree line exploded with an intense hail of automatic rifle fire from approximately 100 North Vietnamese regulars. In mere moments, the platoon ranks were decimated. Oblivious to the danger, Petty Officer Ingram crawled across the bullet spattered terrain to reach a downed Marine. As he administered aid, a bullet went through the palm of his hand. Calls for "CORPSMAN" echoed across the ridge. Bleeding, he edged across the fire swept landscape, collecting ammunition from the dead and administering aid to the wounded.
EACH NIGHT, WE SPOTLIGHT HONOREES WHO HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND THE
Dec. 5
NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY BOOT BARN – Gene Humphrey
Vietnam War veteran and helicopter pilot Gene Humphrey is the one honored by the NFR and Boot Barn, but he wants us to remember his fellow soldiers, nurses, and others in the line of duty who laid it all on the line, saving lives and defending freedom.
Dec. 6
VEGAS NFR ICONS –Speed Williams, Rich Skelton LET ‘ER BUCK BUCKING STOCK OF THE YEAR
Team Ropers Speed Williams and Rich Skelton, who won eight Gold Buckles in a row, go to the rafters with banners and as true icons, while the rankest stock in rodeo is also honored. The NFR stock and contractors are the best in the world.
Dec. 7
VEGAS NFR ICON – Joe Beaver
NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY BOOT BARN – Robert Ingram
Joe Beaver won eight PRCA World Titles and qualified for the NFR 22 times between 1985 and 2006. Ingram, a hospital corpsman 3rd Class in the U.S. Marines, is a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, the nation’s highest honor.
Dec. 8
MEMORIAL NIGHT
We pause to remember our fellow cowboys and cowgirls who have passed away. Their memories will forever live in our hearts and minds, and include legends on and off the dirt. They each will be missed and we honor them with a final tip of the Resistol in addition to a moment of their own here at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Dec. 9
NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY BOOT BARN – Eva Scofield EMPLOYEE SERVICE AWARDS
Scofield was a U.S. Navy Captain and also a top rodeo photographer for decades. Plus, a strong team is the reason why the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is so successful.
WE HONOR CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT ROBERT INGRAM AND VEGAS NFR ICON JOE BEAVER
Joe Beaver
Joe Beaver and the historic Thomas & Mack Center pretty much grew up together. Beaver won his first PRCA Tie-Down World Championship in 1985, the year the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo® moved to Las Vegas from Oklahoma City. Beaver went on to win four more tie-down titles and added three all-around titles. He qualified for the NFR 22 times. Now, his banner takes its rightful spot in the rafters as a Vegas NFR Icon. In 2024, he joins Team Ropers Rich Skelton and Speed Williams, and previous honorees Trevor Brazile, Charmayne James, Ty Murray, Cody Ohl, and Billy Etbauer.
“I thought I was due, I'm not gonna lie, because the Thomas & Mack Center and I kind of made each other there at first when everybody questioned whether the Thomas & Mack Center and Las Vegas were the right places for the NFR,” Beaver said. “Also, I was new on the scene, so people probably questioned if I could win a world title. I was gung-ho for Las Vegas as the new home of the NFR. I thought it sounded great and like a lot of fun. It was more money than we had ever roped for, so how could you question it?
“When they called me and told me about the Vegas NFR Icon award, I thought that this was the icing on the cake. I made a lot of money, a lot of friends, a lot of fans here at the Thomas & Mack Center. Now to be a part of it forever … that's pretty cool.”
Tonight, Beaver will be thinking about his family and those who made him mentally and physically tough, including David Nyegard and Stephen Perry.
“I have been so lucky to stay a part of Las Vegas and the NFR by doing TV for about 17 years,” Beaver says. “When I walk down on the dirt and get my spot by the box on the first night each year, I think back to my time competing and the many who helped me get here. It's a feeling of success and accomplishment because I know what it's like to ride in there and compete. And there was no greater feeling.”
CALL OF DUTY IN DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES AND ARENAS.

VEGAS AND WRANGLER
NFR CONTINUE PARTNERSHIP
Since 1985, Las Vegas and the Thomas & Mack Center have been the home to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. That will remain the case through at least 2035 as the PRCA and Las Vegas have agreed to a new and meaningful partnership to reward competitors, fans, sponsors, and contractors.
Dec. 11
MILITARY NIGHT

These are the true heroes and it is with deep appreciation we honor them. Tonight, World War II veterans Vernon Kuhlmann, Daniel Chevez, Onofrio Zicari, and Thomas Pearson are spotlighted.
