2013 SEASON PREVIEW: Saints Looking Forward to New Season with Young Team For the University of North Georgia baseball team and head coach Tom Cantrell, the first of February can not get here soon enough as the Saints are ready to put 2012 behind them and focus on a new season. The 2012 team went 24-28 with a 13-17 mark in the Peach Belt Conference en route to a fourth-place finish in the West Division. After a 10-5 start through the first 15 games of the season, the team struggled with consistency as they entered their league slate. They advanced to the conference tournament, but back to back losses to Armstrong Atlantic State University and the University of South Carolina Aiken ended the Saints’ season. “I am really looking forward to rebounding after a disappointing

season in 2012,” said Cantrell. “It is time for us to get back to where we need to be and I feel that this group can help us get there.” For Cantrell, that means winning. In his 17-year career as a head coach, Cantrell has posted a 676-336 record, including a 499284 mark in 13 years at the helm of North Georgia’s baseball program, and has claimed six conference championships. Last season ended with Cantrell on the cusp of claiming his 500th win at North Georgia, and while it is certain he wants to claim that next win, he is not focusing on it in terms of his career; rather, he is thinking of it in terms of the team and program being successful. He has already passed the 500 and 600 career marks and that allows him to focus more on mak-

ing the 2013 squad competitive in every game. Cantrell and staff will have plenty of talent to work on that goal this season even though they will be the youngest squad in the PBC and one of the youngest in the country. Heading into the season, the Saints boast 13 freshmen and 11 sophomores taking on the bulk of the load but several of the underclassmen saw plenty of action last season. The team will also have five juniors – mostly transfers – and just three seniors filling in to help with the leadership. “We don’t care whether a player is a freshmen or a fifthyear senior,” Cantrell stated. “We are looking to place the best nine guys on the field that give us the greatest opportunity to win. If that means fielding all freshmen and sophomores, then that is what we will do. I am counting on every man working hard out there to help us be competitive.” Infield On the current roster of 32, 12 of those are listed as infielders. Of those 12, only Derek Hooper and Eason Spivey have played extensively at the college level and those are the two that Cantrell will rely on to keep the team together. Hooper, who is in his third year in the program after beginning his career at LaGrange College, started 51 of 52 games last season mostly at second base. Of the returners who saw significant action, Hooper brings the secondmost consistent bat to the plate as he batted .314 last season off 65 hits. He also accounted for 132

putouts and 161 assists. As a redshirt freshman, Spivey was handed the keys to the defense last year as the starting catcher in 51 games. With that first year under his belt, Spivey will look to lead the 2013 defense and provide the Saints with a solid backstop. Behind those two, the next most experienced player is Travis Naraine who served mostly as the designated hitter in 41 games a season ago with a batting average of .279. The other three positions will surely be an open competition as the beginning of the season draws near. Outfield In the outfield, North Georgia will have eight players competing for the three positions, but two of those should already be locked up

by returners Kenny Bellavance and Andrew Gordon who have played 202 combined collegiate games. Bellavance is the most senior member of the squad as he is the only player to have three years at North Georgia under his belt. Last season, he played mostly in center field where he recorded 111 putouts and he was also one of North Georgia’s leaders at the plate as he batted .333 in 200 at-bats. Cantrell and staff will continue to look to the Stone Mountain, Ga. native this season for that same leadership. As a redshirt freshman last year, Gordon started 45 games in right field for the Saints where he recorded 107 putouts and seven assists. At the plate, he batted .265 and is second amongst the returners with 26 runs batted in. Pitchers On the mound, North Georgia will return a core group of five that, along with three junior transfers, will lead the pitching corps in 2013. Returning starters Jacob Beauchamp and Taylor Keinat saw the most significant innings of work a season ago. Beauchamp returns with the best earned run average of the group with a 3.96 in 72.2 innings of work. Last season, he went 5-2 with one save and fanned 45 batters while Keinat went 4-5 with two saves in 68.2 innings, including one complete game. As for relievers, sophomores Phillip Taylor, Chip Fleming and Nick Bader will provide the backup. Taylor struck out 22 batters a season ago and recorded one save in 36.1 innings. Cantrell also brought in juniors Christian Turnipseed, Clint Spratlin and Trace McDaniel to help add experience to his pitching staff. McDaniel and Spratlin played

together at Chattahoochee Valley Community College the past two years while Turnipseed comes over from Georgia Perimeter College. “We are looking for competitors,” Cantrell said of his entire team. “We are looking for guys that will, day and day out, give us a chance to win and leave it all out on the field.” The young squad will need to bring its “A Game” each and every week in 2013 as the Saints will embark on a grueling 50-game schedule that includes six ranked opponents according to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll. The Saints start things off against No. 28 Lynn University in the Valdosta State Tournament on Friday, Feb. 1 and will continue on with a full slate of Peach Belt Conference games along with a tough out of conference slate.

LINDSAY REEVES

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Lindsay Reeves is in her 12th year with North Georgia College & State University and third year as the Director of Athletics for the Saints. She spent three years as Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Administrator before being named Athletic Director when Randy Dunn retired after 28 years with the university. Reeves graduated from Ithaca College with a BS in Physical Education and received her Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Exercise Physiology. After completing her education, she worked as the Director of Testing at Sports Training Institute in N.Y., before taking over as Assistant Director of Health & Fitness at General Electric World Headquarters in CT. From 1990-1999 she was the Director of Employee Wellness and faculty member at UNC-Chapel Hill. Lindsay is married to Dave Reeves and they have a son Tim who is 24, and a daughter Kelley who is 22.

Derek Suranie has spent the last 13 years with North Georgia, having served in a variety of roles including head athletic trainer for eight years. He is currently in his third year as Associate Athletics Director. As the Associate Athletics Director, he oversees the day-today operations of the department. Prior to his current role, Suranie was the Head Athletic Trainer, and also served as the Athletic Training Coordinator and Clinical Coordinator. Suranie is from Woonsocket, RI where he graduated from Woonsocket High School. He attended Marietta College in Marietta, OH and graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine. He went on to work in Nashua, NH at the Center for Physical Therapy and Exercise. Suranie coordinated Athletic Training services for Souhegan High School as well as maintaining a full patient load in the clinic. Suranie attended the All Academy Physical Education Symposium at the United States Military Academy at West Point and also participated in the inaugural Summer Transition Program at NGCSU. Suranie and his wife Jill moved to the North Georgia region in 1998 and began his employment in NGCSU in 1999. He received his Masters of Education from NGCSU in 2001.

The Peach Belt Conference Entering its 23rd year of existence in 2012-13, the Peach Belt Conference has cemented its status as one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 32 national championships and 28 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 15 championship sports with the addition of men’s and women’s track and field in the spring of 2013. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06. The PBC in in the midst of another dynasty as the Armstrong men’s and women’s tennis teams captured the 31st and 32nd national championships for the conference last year. The Pirates have won four women’s and three men’s national championships since 2008. Armstrong’s achievement was the highlight to one of the most successful seasons in league history. Peach Belt teams advanced to the national championship round of competition in 10 of our 13 sports. The Armstrong women’s soccer team reached the final four while the Flagler volleyball team went to the Elite Eight. The Montevallo men’s basketball team played in the national championship game while the Lander women’s team reached the Elite Eight. The Flagler softball team reached the world series while the Georgia College and USC Aiken men’s golf teams reached the final eight match play at the national championships. In all, 59 Peach Belt teams made appearances in the NCAA postseason, including seven men’s tennis teams and six each in the sports of men’s golf and women’s tennis. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt added Montevallo and Flagler. For the 2012-13 season, the league is expanding once again with the addition of Young Harris College, giving the Peach Belt 14 members for the first time in its history. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Fred Carter, president of Francis Marion University, begins his two-year term as president of the Peach Belt this year. The conference currently holds championships in 15 sports, seven for men and eight for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s track and field.

MEDIA GUIDE - The 2013 North Georgia Baseball Media Guide has been specifically designed to aid members of the media covering the Saints. We appreciate your coverage and if there is anything we can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to contact the sports communications office. The Department of Athletics has certain policies and procedures that we ask for you to abide by while covering the Saints. SPORTS COMMUNICATIONS OFFICE - The North Georgia sports communications office is located on the bottom floor of Memorial Hall Gymnasium in Room 002. Enter through the front doors of the gymnasium and take the glass door to the bottom floor. The sports communications office is the first door on your left as you exit the stairwell. PRESS CREDENTIALS - Press and photograph credentials are issued to members of the working media only. These credentials may be obtained by contacting the sports communications office. Requests should be made 24 hours before the event to be guaranteed consideration. In most cases, credentials will be left at will call, but can be mailed upon request. Working members of the media who plan to cover North Georgia softball on the road should make credential requests through the sports communications office of the host institution. INTERVIEWS - All interviews with players and coaches must be arranged through the sports communications office. Head coach Tom Cantrell is generally accessible to members of the media. The best time to reach him is from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in his office which is located in Memorial Hall. Milledge Austin is in his first year with the University of North Georgia as the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Communication. He most recently served as the Director of Operations and Media Relations at Montana State University Billings where he oversaw the media aspects for the athletic department’s 17 varsity teams with emphasis on volleyball, cross country, men’s basketball, softball, baseball, track & field and golf. He was the primary media contact for coverage of the Yellowjackets’ men’s basketball and softball teams which both won conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Division II regionals. Prior to joining the MSUB staff, Austin served as the Assistant Sports Information Director at fellow Peach Belt Conference member the University of South Carolina Aiken for two years covering the volleyball and softball programs while also assisting with the Pacers’ other eight varsity sports including multiple conference champions and NCAA tournament participants. He helped maintain the Pacers’ social media network and served as the director/producer for home webcasts while helping with game-day and day-to-day operations. A native of Aiken, S.C., Austin earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications (2009) from USCA.

Tom Cantrell enters his 14th season as head coach of the North Georgia baseball program. Since helping bring the program back to Dahlonega, Cantrell has led the Saints to 12 seasons with at least 30 wins and three-straight appearances in the Peach Belt Conference tournament. The North Georgia baseball program continues to send players to the next level, as three players have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft over the last three years. In 2010, Daniel Petitti and Chris Rearick became the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first duo to be drafted in the same year, when they were selected in the 37th and 41st rounds respectively by the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays. Troy Snitker followed and made his own headlines in 2011, when he became the highest draft pick in North Georgia history, going in the 19th round to the Atlanta Braves. In their first year eligible for postseason play since entering the NCAA, Cantrell led his team to a tie for third place in the Peach Belt Conference regular season and ran through the PBC Tournament with four straight wins to claim the championship. The

Saints finished the regular season winning 19 of 22 games and competed in their first NCAA South Atlantic Regional. Cantrell reached a career coaching milestone during the 2010 season, picking up his 600th victory as a head coach with a 17-2 victory over Carson-Newman College on March 16, 2010. He enters the season just one victory shy from earning his 500th victory at North Georgia. His 2007 team finished their second season of competition at the NCAA Division II level and in the Peach Belt Conference, by finishing 34-22 (17-13 PBC). Cantrell reached a pair of milestones in the 2007 season, winning his 300th game at North Georgia and his 500th game overall. He was also awarded the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year Award, and also coached the 2007 Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in Craig Brisson. In their inaugural year, 2006, in the NCAA Division II and the Peach Belt Conference, the Saints finished with an overall record of 32-29 and a PBC record of 9-18. named PBC Player of the Year, SouthAtlantic Player of the Year, third team NCAA Division II All-American, and signed a free-agent contract with the San Diego Padres. In his 13 years at North Georgia, Cantrell has amassed a 499-284 (.637) record and has posted a winning record at North Georgia in each of those 13 seasons. Over his 15-year career at Georgia Perimeter College (DeKalb College) and North Georgia, he has a 652-308 (.679) overall record. Cantrell also has a sharp eye for spotting major league talent, 23 of his former players have signed professional contracts. Five of those 20 are currently in the majors: Nick Green with the Texas Rangers, Marlon Byrd with the Chicago Cubs, and formerly Robby Hammock with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Cantrell also coached Adam Everett formerly of the Cleveland Indians, and Michael Barrett during summer ball at East Cobb, formerly of the Toronto Blue Jays. Cantrell came to North Georgia from Georgia Perimeter College (DeKalb College) where he spent nine years, four as head coach with a record of 177-52 (.773). While at GPC, Cantrell’s teams produced two NJCAA All- Americans, five NJCAA Academic All-Americans, 21 GJCAA All-Region, and two GJCAA Players of the Year. In 1998, Cantrell guided DeKalb to its first state championship since 1987. They also won the East Central District Championship, and made an appearance at the JUCO World Series, DeKalb’s first appearance since 1977. Coach Cantrell’s squads were consistently ranked nationally in the top twenty. For his efforts in 1998, Cantrell, was named GJCAA Coachof-the-Year, as well as the East Central District Coach of the Year. In 1991, Cantrell returned to DeKalb as an assistant coach responsible for recruiting. In his five seasons as an assistant coach DeKalb compiled an impressive 204-94 record. In 1995 Cantrell was named GJCAA Assistant Coach-of-the Year. Born on November 10, 1965, in Habersham, Georgia34-2-, Cantrell was a two-time Georgia All-State shortstop at North Clayton High School. ing his senior season, Cantrell began his collegiate career at DeKalb College. At DeKalb, he hit .332 and was an All-Region shortstop his freshman year with the Patriots. Following an outstanding sophomore campaign, in which he hit .362, he was once again named to the All-Region. At the conclusion of his second year at DeKalb, the Atlanta Braves drafted him in the seventh round. In the summer of 1985, Cantrell reported to the Braves rookie camp in Bradenton, Florida. After batting .214 in Bradenton, Cantrell was sent to Pulaski, Virginia for his second season. At Pulaski, Cantrell had a

spectacular season, hitting .301 and making the Appalachian League AllStar team. That year, he helped lead the team to the Appalachian League World Series. While with Pulaski, he was coached by former Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers manager Grady Little. Cantrell credits Little and college coach Doug Casey as the main catalyst that led him into the coaching profession. Cantrell retired from professional baseball in 1987 and began coaching American Legion baseball in College Park, Georgia. A highly successful amateur coach, Cantrell finished third in the nation three times.

MICHAEL HOLDER ASSISTANT COACH (FIRST SEASON) Michael Holder is in his first year as an assistant head coach under Tom Cantrell at the University of North Georgia. Holder makes his way to North Georgia after spending eight seasons as an assistant coach for Peach Belt Conference foe USC Aiken. The Evans, Ga., native has over 10 years working at the NCAA Division I and II level and will bring a wealth of experience to the Saints in 2013. Holder completed his eighth season as an assistant coach for the USC Aiken baseball program in 2012, and also finished his second year as the pitching coach for the Pacers. Under his direction, the pitching staff at USC Aiken posted a 3.57 earned run average in 2012 and led the Pacers to a 38-win season and a top-20 ranking in the final Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II National Poll. As a hitting instructor in his early seasons at USC Aiken, Holder helped the Pacers to a school-record 47 wins in 2008 and the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship in 2009. The Pacers broke numerous school hitting records in 2009 with Southeast Region Player of the Year and consensus All-American Travis Howard leading the nation in RBIs with 103, which also tied an NCAA DII national record. Prior to his stint at USC Aiken, Holder spent three seasons as a volunteer assistant at Vanderbilt University. During his tenure in Nashville, Tennessee, Holder mentored the Commodore catchers and oversaw field preparations at Hawkins Field. In the summer of 2003, Holder served as an assistant coach for the Cotuit Kettleers of the prestigious Cape Cod League. Prior to his arrival at Vanderbilt, Holder spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Greenbrier High School summer league followed by a one-year stay as an assistant at Middle Georgia College. Holder graduated from Augusta State University in May 2001 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education. As a player, he was a four-year letterwinner as a catcher at Georgia Southern University from 1995-1999. Holder and his wife Stephanie have one daughter (Lily).

NICK PALMER ASSISTANT COACH (FOURTH SEASON) Nick Palmer is in his fourth year as an assistant coach under Tom Cantrell at the University of North Georgia in 2012-13. Nick assists in the everyday operations of the baseball program while helping run the team’s strength and conditioning program and working with the catchers on a day-to-day basis. Palmer spent five years as a member of the North Georgia baseball program and was a member of the 2005 NAIA Conference Tournament Championship team, and the 2008 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship team. He was also apart of the program’s first-ever trip to the NCAA National Tournament in 2008. Palmer graduated in 2009 with a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science from North Georgia and holds a Masters of Art in Teaching. He can be reached at 706878-6010.

CODY CLICKNER GRAADUATE ASSISTANT (FIRST SEASON) Cody Clickner begins his first year as an assistant coach under Tom Cantrell at the University of North Georgia in 2012-2013. Cody will assist in the everyday operations of the baseball program. His duties include working with the pitchers, field maintenance, and camp operations. Cody played the last four seasons at North Georgia. He logged 26.2 innings in 11 appearances, while striking out 16 batters. Cody is working on obtaining his Master’s degree in Physical Education at North Georgia.

ZACH ADAMS TRAINER (SECOND SEASON) Zach Adams is in his second year as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of North Georgia. Originally from Vinemont, Ala., Adams works primarily with the baseball team as well as coordinating the insurance for all sports. Adams graduated from the University of Alabama in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training. He then received a Masters of Science in Sport Management from Florida State University in the spring of 2011.

BLAKE PODSON STRENGTH & CONDITIONING (FOURTH SEASON) Blake Podsen is in his fourth year at the University of North Georgia as the Strength and Conditioning coordinator for the department of athletics. He assists North Georgia athletes with strength training as well as conditioning for all 12 collegiate sports competing at the NCAA Division II level. He also serves as an instructor for classes in the Health and Physical Education department. Podsen received his Associate degree in Criminal Justice from Gainesville State College in 2005. He then completed his Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education at North Georgia College and State University in 2009. Podsen obtained his Master’s degree in Education from North Georgia and is also a certified K-12 Physical Educator. He is currently working towards his doctorate degree in Higher Education Leadership.
