THE CALDERA

ANTHROPO MORPHIC

The Caldera is a remodel project in Hayes Valley, San Francisco that turns an old school into an elegant and sophisticated hotel. They secure the balance between raw and polished, natural and refined and defined and delicate. Furthermore, they include a three meal French Japanese fusion restaurant; Metanoia.

Inspired by the way a human body works, this textile line looks at the patterns introduced by internal organs. Each piece is either individually silk screened or heat transferred.

Our inspiration came from a major problem that we’re facing globally: climate change. It’s affecting our ecosystems, our weather patterns, and it’s damaging our agriculture. We’re not the only one as a species to experience such dramatic change in temperature, our crops also have a hard time adapting to this rapid change. Many of them are dying and becoming extinct as a result. Without diversity in agriculture, our society is on the verge of mass starvation. Unlike other seedbanks, it does not only aim to preserve a variety of plant species from the region, but from all around the world. It is an archetypal vault with architectural significance that was build to last. Even if the world is destroyed by a comet or a nuclear war, Svalbard will survive. And when the world has become a catastrophic wasteland, we will use the seeds in Svalbard as a foundation to rebuild our agriculture, our society, our species. Svalbard isn’t just preserving the species of plants, it ensures the survival of our own. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is the final attempt to save agriculture

D’Vault is situated in close proximities and in the same neighborhood are multiple facilities to accommodate the needs of the families that make up the community. The neighborhood in general is quite accessible, which makes it extremely convenient for people to commute to and from this housing structure. There is a muni stop right down the street named after the street nearby, ‘Mission Rock’, and a Caltrain station right around the corner after passing the bridge towards the AT&T stadium. Another form of transport that would suit this neighborhood are bicycles as this is a nice neighborhood for people to ride around and it is after all a very active community.

This community is made up of around 5,390 people, 3, 373 being males and 2,017 being females. The average age for males in the neighborhood is

35 years old while the female average is 33 years old. Of the 5,390 people that live in this neighborhood, 28% are married couples, whilst 33.6% are married with children.

EXPERIENCE W H AT ’ S I N S I D E D’Vult is an ode to the importance of agriculture and the significance of Svalbard in our society. We depend on them, we live for them. For without them, there would be no food, no market, no culture. We saw our marketplace as a product of the seed vault; it is a warehouse of diversity and a fusion of cultural influences from around the world. The vault is not what we want; we want what’s inside. Often, it is the value of the things inside thats worth preserving.

The counter bar at the restaurant leads customers into the market.

A nutritionist will be available to provide recipes from individuals who are interested.

Walking into the market from the restaurant, the prepared foots and cold cuts are displayed on the left and an array of packaged foods are displayed on the right.

The view of the wine cellar from the grab and go, which is a major focal poiint of the space.

The lounge area was designed for customers who intend to enjoy their purchases from the opposite counters including the coffee bar, the juice bar and the deli.

D’Cellar Bar Elevation

The design of the bar in the wine cellar mixes two contrasting elements of the seed vault (the vault itself and the seeds within). The more delicate geometry found in the seed being sheltered within the harder and more prominent geometry. The bar’s main function is to give customers a taste of some of the products (wine, cheese, seasonal delicacies) in the store. We elliminated seatings around the bar to encourage the clients to explore other areas of the market, rather than being grounded to just one.

Space Planning Ideally, it would be best for a school to have a floor plan that is clear and straightforward. Therefore, the adjacency planning that relates to each space in Next University is calculated based on efficiency for the students, the convenience as well as functional reasons. Upon walking in, the students and faculty are greeted by a concierge or security staff who sits amongst an

envelope of laser cut copper panels. The entrance itself provides a first glance into the rest of the space. Beyond that is the student work cafe, a space where students can gather to enjoy a meal in-between classes. To the left and righ are in between learning spaces which are designed differently but both to the benefit of the students in their process of learning.

Towards the back are all the private learning spaces which include the faculty connection hub, the large classroom and the active distance learning classroom. By dividing the entire space between public and private, there is a clear understanding of the space and its functions.

THE SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE With the future of students in mind, the concept of Mammatus was developed with the idea of helping individuals progress by taking steps toward a bright future. Just like the cloud formation that indicates a positive time ahead, Next University intend to apply these strong principles in shaping and molding their talented students. In addition, Next University is designed to encourage students to learn and continuously advance toward an innovative future. Embracing a warm color palette and harder and harsher finishes, the aesthetics supports the importance of discipline without forgetting the significance of amiability and overall warmth. The atmosphere throughout the space corresponds to the design concept in a way that it has a dramatic impression but still maintains a gentle experience for its users.

Students and faculty walk in to be greeted by a concierge or security staff that sits behind a clear desk lit up by an LED box and enveloped by laser cut copper panels. Since the design utilizes the benefits of being transparent, the logo of the university is proudly displayed within its construction. within its construction.

The faculty connection hub is divided into two areas. one being the big presentation spaces while the other being smaller presentation cubes. The big presentation space utilizes steelcase’s media: scape which is a meeting table with a media set attached. the use of glass and plexiglass throughout the space is both to increase a sense of privacy as well as to increase the amount of daylight that enters the space.

This technologically dependent space embraces the need for technology in this modern era. Computers adorn single tables, giving generous space for students to work on projects if need be. A printing and copy station stands freely and openly by the entrance wall where there is plenty of space. The layout of this classroom is simple and coherent yet easy to understand.

The Caldera

A transformation of what used to be an old school into an elegant and sophisticated hotel in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. CONCEPT: caldera

3

CONCEPT DE VELOPMENT

THE CALDERA

The Caldera is a natural structure that is a result of a natural phenomenon known as the volcanic eruption. Through this process, volcanoes collapse due to the lack of magma within, hence creating a caldera which by structure is incredibly powerful and magnificent. Like the caldera, this hotel is in the process of transforming into a dynamic structure that embraces a completely different aesthetic in comparison to that of the old and rundown school that it used to be.

WITNESS THE TRANSFORMATION Watch the old school turn into a luxurious hotel in the midst of San Francisco’s finest architecture including the Symphony, the Ballet, the Opera and the City Hall. This rich and textural hotel invites a wide target audience to enjoy their facilities including an upscale restaurant known as Metanoia. With different fascinating room types that is designed tastefully, guests will appreciate and savor the unique experience throughout the entire structure.

The obsidian wall that adorn one side of the lobby is adorned by a modern table that takes on a unique form.

The check-in and the lobby itself is kept simple and hollow to create a quiet and serene atmosphere for guests. It is meant to reflect the nature of being in an emptied volcano. This concept is emphasized by the atrium that lets in a generous amount of daylight from the center of the lobby.

The hallway represents the balance between raw and refined, and natural and polished through the use of materials for the opposing walls. At the end of long hall, there is a convexed brass mirror that acts as a focal point to pull people in.

The Presidential Suite embraces the idea of having guests feel as though they are standing within a structure, namely a volcano. This type of suitesare equipped with a living room, a dining table, a study, a powder room and a bedroom with curvilinear walls.

The bathrooms in the suites boasts a free standing tub, an overhead waterfall shower and double sinks. Keeping a clean aesthetic, the number of materials used are kept to a minimum with an added touch of a painted mural by the tub to encourage tranquility.

To add that sense of prestige, the Presidential Suite includes a dining room that is designed in a semi enclosed space, giving it some privacy and just the right amount of seclusion from the rest of the suite.

The typical guest room would be enveloped in a curvilinear wooden structure that stretches from one end across the other. Furnishings are kept to a bare minimum to emphasize the idea of a void as to carry the concept further.

A high-end, three meal restaurant within the perimeters of the hotel, Metanoia specializes in French and Japanese fusion delicacies. The elegant and chic dining atmosphere is achived by the tasteful design elements alongside the structural built of the space.

Metanoia utilizes different types of seatings to maximize comfort, function and efficiency. Furthremore, the restaurant is divided into different spaces while maintaining an open floor plan.

Anthropomorphic

A textile line that takes a closer look into the elements that makes up the human body. CONCEPT: human body

4

KNOW THE HUMAN BODY The human body is not just what it seems from the outside. Human’s capability to function rely on so many different parts and most often than not, these elements are overlooked. As an homage, the Anthropomorphic line is inspired by these elements within the body that keeps humans going and alive.

Elemental Inspiration: Muscles This textile piece takes the textural movement in the muscle tissue and applies it in a more dramatic manner.

Elemental Inspiration: Brain Taken from the view of a brain scan, this repetitive pattern vaguely shows what it looks like inside the human head.

Elemental Inspiration: Artery A simpler representation of the artery, this textile piece is aimed to show the texture of this element and ultimately its shape through the use of different colored dyes.

Elemental Inspiration: Veins The repetitive pattern in this particular textile piece visualizes the veins within the lungs. The veins are branched out to two different sides to accurately represent these elements.

Elemental Inspiration: Capillary This piece is particularly interesting as the pattern is silk screened on two fabrics that are then overlapped on top of each other. This dramatic textile is aimed to visualize the actual pattern of a capillary.
