Game Preview: NGU vs. AVE MARIA North Greenville did something it’s only done one other time in school history, defeating Mars Hill 38-14. NGU’s only other win over the Lions came in 2011 during the programs only playoff appearance. The Crusaders dominated the game with 568 yards of total offense while holding the normally lethal MHU offense to just 290 yards of offense. NGU’s defense, which had given up 230 yards rushing in each of the first four games allowed just 83 yards on the ground, the second time in two weeks the Crusaders held a team under 100-yards rushing. The Lions passed for 207 yards but the NGU defense did a good job keeping the Lions out of the end zone. The NGU defensive backs will have their hands full again this week as the Gyrenes average 233-yards passing per game and two touchdowns. Ave Maria is also decent on the ground, averaging 136.6 yards rushing per game. North Greenville’s defense has three interceptions so far this season, but will look to be opportunistic, as the Gyrenes have thrown seven this season. NGU’s defense has also given the offense five extra possessions this season, forcing five fumbles and recovering six, led by Darius Custard who has picked up two loose balls. Sam Houston continues to lead the North Grenville defense with 43-tackles followed by Taylor Anderson who has 36. The Gyrenes are also susceptible up front, allowing 19 sacks in five games this season. NGU has 10 sacks on the season, a stat that is also led by Darius Custard. Custard has 1.5 sacks on the season while eight other players have at least one. North Greenville’s offense seems to have finally found a rhythm, after a shaky start. The Crusaders averaged just 315 yards in the first three games of the season (105 yards under the 2014 season average), but have racked-up over 500-yards in the last two contest. The Crusaders put up 514 against UNC Pembroke before its biggest output of the year against Mars Hill last week. Nelson Hughes has passed for more than 300 yards passing in each of the last two wins with six touchdowns. Hughes’s favorite target remains Robbie Brown who is putting together a solid junior campaign. Brown has collected 30 catches for 306-yards. Brown was scoreless in the first three games of the season but has caught fire in the last two contests finding the end zone three times. Mason Sanders continues to be a solid second option for Hughes with 17 catches for 240 yards and three touchdowns. North Greenville’s running game has been equally as dangerous for opponents. Ashton Heard leads the NGU ground attack that averages 175 yards per game, including the past two games in which NGU put up over 200 yards. Heard has 466 yards this season on 90 attempts while also catching 11 passes for 198-yards and one score. Simeon Byrd is next on the list with 215 yards on 32 attempts. NGU’s front five will be presented with a challenge as the Gyrenes have allowed opponents just 80 yards rushing per game. The Gyrenes have been a little more susceptible through the air allowing just over 200 yards a game through the air.

2015 Last Time Out

North Greenville vs. Mars Hill College

S at u r d ay, O c t o b e r 3 , 2 0 1 5

Mars Hill, S.C.—The North Greenville Football Team beat Mars Hill for only the second time in NGU history on Saturday in a 38-14 romp, earning the Crusaders their first road win of the 2015 season. North Greenville totaled 568 yards of total offense while the defense held the Lions to 290-yards. Simeon Byrd had 112-yards on 12 carriers for the Crusaders while Ashton Heard totaled 26 carries for 99 yards. Byrd led the NGU rushing attack with two touchdowns followed by Trey Walker who finished with one touchdown and 18 yards. The NGU ground game accumulated 290-yards and three touchdowns, the second largest total against Mars Hill in program history. The Crusaders were equally as dominant through the air. Nelson Hughes threw for a season high 331 yards and two scores, connecting with Ashton Heard who led all NGU receivers with 95-yards and a touchdown out of the backfield. Robbie Brown had 89-yards on six receptions, finding pay dirt once. Heard finished the game with a season high 180 all-purpose yards. The two teams traded scoreless possessions until North Greenville finally broke through with 1:51 left in the first quarter when Nelson Hughes found Robbie Brown for a 17-yard hookup. NGU’s defense would thwart a Mars Hill fourth down conversion attempt on the Lion’s ensuing drive to give the ball back to the North Greenville offense. The Crusaders would capitalize on the extra possession marching 89-yards on seven plays, capped off by a Trey Walker touchdown from seven yards out, extending the lead to 14-0. North Greenville would tack on a 24-yard field goal before the buzzer to extend the lead to 17-0. A 15 play, 79-yard touchdown by Mars Hill would cut the North Greenville lead to ten points. NGU’s offense amassed 274-yards in the first half while Mars Hill was held to just 151-yards overall. The Lions struck first in the second half after NGU failed to convert its first two drives into points. The Lions connected for a 30-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 17-14, a score, which still favored the Crusaders. The two squads then traded scoreless possessions before Hughes and company found second half pay dirt for the first time. Simeon Byrd’s third rushing touchdown of the season from seven yards out would give the Crusaders a 24-14 advantage, heading into the fourth quarter. North Greenville would use the big play in the fourth quarter to create some separation. Hughes would connect with heard for a 33-yard score before a fumble recovery by Darius Custard (forced by Sam Houston) would lead to a 51-yard touchdown from Simeon Byrd on the ground, making the score 38-14, which would stand as the final. NGU’s defense turned in one of its best performances of the season, forcing and recovering two fumbles while sacking the quarterback 3 times. Sam Houston led the charge from his middle linebacker spot with 11 total tackles (9 solo 2 assisted) while Nigel Gay finished with eight. Darius Custard and Anthony Blair both recovered fumbles while Blair, Martez Abrams, and Logan Terrell had one sack apiece.
