The Last Meeting: North Greenville and Livingstone College will meet for the first time on a non-traditional college football night as the Crusaders and Blue Bears plan to strap up on Friday night in Younts Stadium. North Greenville added Livingstone in an attempt to claim eligibility for the Division-II playoffs, dropping previously scheduled Virginia Lynchburg. The Crusaders were originally scheduled to take on Clark Atlanta, but scheduling conflicts prevented the second meeting between NGU and the Panthers. The Crusaders and Blue Bears will be complete strangers as they head into Friday’s matchup, as there are no common opponents shared by the two squads. Livingstone is a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Other CIAA members include Winston Salem State, Shaw University, and Chowan University. Friday night will be full of extra curricular activities as well. NGU football will recognize 17 seniors before the game. It is also Military Appreciation Day. The North Greenville baseball team will also have its moment as the tem receives its 2015 Conference Carolinas Championship rings.

NORTH GREENVILLE VS. LIVINGSTONE COLLEGE[PREVIEW] An unfamiliar team on an unfamiliar night is the task for the North Greenville football team this week as the Crusaders gear up for the first ever matchup with Livingstone College. The Crusaders entered this week game planning for a game with Clark Atlanta, but learned Tuesday evening that the opponent had been changed to Livingstone College due to scheduling conflicts with the Panthers and their conference office. North Greenville picked up the Blue Bears on Tuesday night to fill a void in the schedule, giving NGU one more NCAA Division-II game, keeping the Crusaders in contention for one of seven Super Region II playoff spots. NGU comes off of its first loss in six games this week after suffering a 48-45 defeat at the hands of Carson Newman. The Livingstone Blue Bears enter this week with new life after believing their season was over following a 35-12 win over Johnson C. Smith, last Saturday. They enter Friday’s game with a 5-3 mark overall and a 2-2 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference. NGU’s defense has seen its share of rushing attacks this season, facing three option teams in Lenoir-Rhyne, Carson Newman, and Charleston Southern, but the Crusaders are bracing for more of the same. The Blue Bears average 191.1 yards on the ground per contest, led by quarterback Drew Powell who has 714 on 139 carries. Powell also leads the team with eight touchdowns. Tailback Jarius Richardson is next in line with 596 yards and five touchdowns. Powell is just as dangerous through the air, throwing for 1786 yards this season and 14 touchdowns. The senior signal caller has thrown eight interceptions on the season and hovers around 59 percent in completion percentage, hooking up 149 times on 253 attempts. The Bears have three receivers with at least 200 yards, led by Jalen Hendricks. Hendricks has powered the receiving corps with 58 catches for 730-yards this season, connecting with Powell for eight touchdowns. Hendrick’s catches also go for big yardage as he is averaging 12.6 yards per reception. NGU defenders are doing their part this season to keep opponents in check. The “Black Swarm” is allowing 336-yards per game, compared to just 24.7 points. Sam Houston is just 18 tackles away from 100 for the season, and nine tackles away from breaking the career tackles record. Taylor Anderson is also doing his part, collecting 61 tackles on the season. Anderson is also a key contributor in NGU’s pass defense as he leads the team with five break-ups and six deflections. He also has one NGU’s 11 team interceptions. KJ McDonald leads with three interceptions while Nigel Gay and Jeremy Massey both have two picks. The Crusaders have 17 sacks on the season led by Anthony Blair and Darius Custard who have 2.5 each. Blair leads North Greenville with three fumble recoveries.

@Crusader_Sports

NGU’s offense also has a tough task on its hands as it gears up for a stingy Livingstone College defense. The Crusaders are averaging just over 400 yards per contest this year, using a balanced attack to get the job done, rushing for 207 yards per contest while throwing for 217. On the flipside, the Blue Bears are holding opponents to 287 yards of total offense, limiting opponents both on the ground and through the air. Teams are averaging just 113 yards in rushing and 174 yards passing. NGU has exposed several defenses this season using a strong running game paired with one of the better passing games in all of NCAA Division II Football, and the Crusaders will look to do it again on Friday. NGU’s offense has had several big time contributors this season, especially in the running game. Ashton Heard continues to lead the Crusaders in his breakout season. Heard eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark last week, rushing for 131-yards against the Eagles. He now has 1,093 yards rushing this year. In the passing game, Nelson Hughes looks to bounce back after a tough week. Hughes so far this season has 1,860 yards and 20 touchdowns. He is completing 64 percent of his passes and has eight interceptions on the season. Mason Sanders has stepped up as Hughes’s favorite target this season, catching 34 balls for 479 yards and 11 touchdowns. Sanders is tied with six other players for 15th in the country in that category, and has a chance to inch closer to the top with a big game Friday night. While NGU’s offense and defense have put together a solid 2015 campaign, the Crusader Special Teams units have also been solid. Place kicker Ben Kramm has come on as of late and has made four of his five field goal attempts while punter Bobby Foos is averaging 41-yards a punt with a long of 74.The Crusaders have two kicks returned for a touchdown this season including a punt return from Roderick McCray and a kickoff return from Demajiay Rooks. NGU returners will look to have a big night on Friday. The Blue Bears are giving up 19.9 yards per punt return and 27 yards per kickoff return. On the flip side, The Crusaders have done a solid job keeping opponent return games in check. Opposing returners have found little room t o run, picking up just 15.5 extra yards on kickoff and an even smaller 10-yards on punt returns. Looking for extra: The North Greenville football team still has an outside shot of making the NCAA Division II playoffs, ranking 9th in last week’s Super Regional Poll. The Crusaders will need some help from other teams, but the first order of business will be winning on Friday night. NGU will find out its fate on Sunday night during the NCAA Division II selection show. NGU is still poised for a second straight trip to the NCCAA Victtory bowl.
